In the frame of this paper a holistic dynamic process model approach is presented in order to introduce operational and technical excellence in drilling and blasting. Both on a macro and micro level the single process parts of drilling and blasting are outlined and their interaction is explained. The use of this approach for closing the gap between process planning and process implementation is explained and an example of the value generated is given.

The comparatively low winter rainfall, exposure to heavy salt laden coastal winds, and the consequent high evaporation rate, are important considerations in the rehabilitation of the Maslins Beach Sand Pit. The deficit of rainfall over evaporation is assessed at 1085 mm per annum. Such a coastal environment complicates the establishment of plants. The endemic flora found on the Sand Pit environs is mainly low wind-planed shrubs and mat plants. The dunes near the coast support an association dominated by Atriplex cinerea, Spinifex hirsutus, Scirpus nodosus, and Olearia axillaris. The coastal cliffs carry a more diverse vegetation dominated by Beyeria lechenaultii and Eutaxia microphylla. Overburden is used to develop a new landscape to screen operations, batter final faces, and cover rubbish at the nearby Council dump. The early overburden dumps were built with little regard for stability, but the more recent practice of using scrapers has resulted in more stable dumps. The erosion problems created by poor compaction have been controlled by contour banks, diversion drains, bitumen lined run-off drains, and hay mulching.

Mining Engineering Degree programs have traditionally had a practical emphasis and have been highly vocational in nature. However, over the years, there has been an increasing attention to the more scientific aspects of the discipline. More recently, the professional institutions, the industry and the community at large have placed increasing emphasis on the broader aspects of the professions: management, finance, humanity, environment and social issues. Notwithstanding this, there has been a continuing emphasis on the practicalities, and most Mining Engineering programs are still strongly vocational in nature. But employers of new graduates complain about the graduatesÆ lack of practicality and readiness for employment æat the sharp endÆ on the mine site.This paper briefly describes some of the more recent developments in the Mining Engineering Degree program at the University of Queensland that attempt to address the problem. Particular attention is paid to alternative learning programs, including applications of virtual reality, practical experience at the University Experimental Mine (UQEM), and the Undergraduate Site Learning Program (USLP).

One of the most difficult places to ventil ate in any mine is the working face area of an advancing mine heading. With an ever changing configuration, continual modification and extension to the ventilation system is necess- ary to maintain an adequate supply of fresh air and to control mixing and recirculation. Methane emissions and high dust levels as coal is broken and removed from the face area can produce unhealthy and dangerous conditions if ventilat- ion is not adequately monitored. An understanding of the air flow patterns which develop through use of different face ven- tilation systems can be reached by undertaking underground measurements or through observations using physical models. Tests undertaken by the author to determine the adequacy of different system-configurations are discussed together with approaches adopted by others working in the United States. Various new methods have been proposed for improving face ventilation beyond that sustained using conventional brattice curtain or tubing systems. The adequacy of some advances adopted by mining companies to improve ventilation while maintaining output efficiency is discussed.

Some twelve months of operation at Mount Lyell, using two large diameter ball mills as a two-stage grinding circuit indicated a short- fall in the grinding capability compared with design criteria. Breakage, particularly at coarser sizes, was less efficient than with the previously used grinding circuit comprising a large number of smaller diameter mills. This paper describes both old and new equipment, puts forward the facts as they are presently known, and lists the attempts made to overcome the problem.

The use of black and white and colour infrared film in remote sensing of natural resources, is reviewed. In heavily-forested areas such as New Zealand, the main value of the method is in surveying the vegetation cover to detect the existence of plant communities characteristic of specific geological formations, By contrast, in and areas of Australia where the vegetation cover is sparse and where rocks and soils are well exposed, the method can be used in detecting different rock types or other geological differences.

During the last two decades, restrictions on access to land for mineral exploration and development in Australia have intensified. State and Federal legislation relating to Aboriginal land rights, national parks, marine parks, wilderness areas and other conservation areas, the surface rights of farmers in New South Wales and Western Australia, national, State and world heritage, urban developments and acquisition of land by governments for other purposes have all placed limits on mineral exploration and mine development activity. More than 20% of Australia's land area is now either unavailable for mineral exploration or available only under severe constraints. Access to this land is denied at a significant economic cost to the Australian community. There have been few attempts to quantify this cost. More importantly these restrictions have developed on an ad hoc basis promoted by single interest government departments often with little regard for rational land use planning. The mining industry has embraced the community's conservation ethic and accepted that conservation areas should be set aside and that within those areas mineral activity should be restricted. In some cases the restrictions on exploration near areas of outstanding scientific, historical, archeological or scenic importance may amount to an effective prohibition. The industry has vigorously opposed the exclusion of mineral activity in conservation areas on purely emotive grounds, unsupported by scientific evidence and in disregard of land use potential, consideration of multiple use potential or consultation with existing or potential land users likely to be effected.

In July 1997 Macraes Mining Company Limited deferred a 9 Mtpa expansion of the Macraes Gold Project because of the uncertainty of the future gold price and its impact on equity markets.  Additionally delays in the resource consenting process led to further uncertainty.   It has subsequently announced that a study has been commissioned to recommend a staged approach to development of its New Zealand business. The best economic development path will be determined to maximise returns to shareholders.

Exploring for deep shallow dipping orebodies can be very expensive and very difficult. Surface exploration is often not an option and obtaining the best location for underground drilling can cause production delays if drilling is carried out from development headings. The Otter/Juan mine has been in production for approximately 34 years. All of the production is now sourced from more than 1000 metres below the surface from an area known as the Edwards Lode. The orebody is shallow dipping and open at depth. Exploration drilling has been performed from decline stockpiles and from hangingwall drill drives. Drilling from footwall positions (eg decline stockpiles) into shallow dipping orebodies can often produce intersections which are unusually thick thus leading to optimistic resource figures. The decision to develop a dedicated hangingwall drilling position can vastly improve the quality of the data used to generate an orebody model. In 1997 a new extension to the Edwards Lode was discovered and named the æFÆ surface. In 1999 a resource calculation was performed using data obtained from drilling that was carried out from decline stockpiles. In 2002 a dedicated drill drive was developed into the hangingwall of the æFÆ surface to obtain better data to verify the previous resource calculation. For this case study obtaining more representative data reduced the resource estimate by 66 per cent. This information was obtained early enough to allow for alteration to the mine plan and without loss of capital.

The South Island of New Zealand comprises a collage of distinct tectonostratigraphic terranes. Some tectonic models predict that these terranes formed on or near the margin of Gondwanaland. However, geologic evidence suggests that some of these terranes may be exotic. Over 400 samples from 30 sites were collected from the Brookstreet terrane within the Takitimu Mountains. The section includes the early Permian Takitimu Group and the late Permian White Hill Intrusive Suite. Over 80% of the rocks show a partial or complete regnetization in the present field due to recent acquistion of VRM. Although some remagnetization of the Takitimu Group occurred during the emplacement of the White Hill Intrusives, both early and late Permian direction have been isolated. These directions indicate a mid-latitude origin for the Brookstreet terrane, and suggest a strong clockwise rotation between early and late Permian time. A published paleomagnetic result from the younger, but related, Murihiku terrane suggests that the Brookstreet terrane was sutured to the margin of Gondwanaland by the late Triassic, or that the Brookstreet and Murihiku are two distinct terranes.

The magnitude and orientation of the in situ stressfield has been determined as a key factor in controlling the stability of openings for both coal mine development and extraction. Monitoring of roadway and pillar behaviour in conjunction with numerical analysis has identified specific stress control measures that have been successfully applied to improve productivity in underground coal mining operations. The influence of the major horizontal stressfield on the stability of openings has been identified at a wide range of sites including mines in Australia, Britain, the USA, New Zealand and Japan. Stress mapping, stress measurement and stress monitoring techniques have been applied to define the in situ stress regime and, together with the correlation of measurements of rock deformation and rock reinforcement behaviour, has enabled appropriate stress control measures to be developed. Stress control measures for development headings have required the selection of roadway orientation, roadway sequencing, reinforcement density and pillar size. The monitoring of behaviour at a range of trial sites has confirmed significant improvements in development stability. Stress control measures for longwall extraction have required rational selection of longwall orientation and extraction direction. Where a mine layout design incorporating the optimum longwall layout design has not been possible, the use of sacrificial roadways has been successfully applied to protect key roadways from stress concentration effects. Two drill core samples of haematite/goethite from the Robe River (Western Australia) channel iron ore deposits (CID) were dated using (U-Th)/He methods in order to constrain the timing of iron oxide formation and thereby provide a temporal context for CID genesis. (U-Th)/He ages (He ages) from these samples range from the late Oligocene to Late Miocene and despite a high degree of scatter, they corroborate relationships expected from the internal ooidal stratigraphy: For individual ooids, the ages from haematitic core are older than or indistinguishable from the ages of the surrounding goethitic cortex. The goethitic cortices are, in turn, older than the ferruginised wood fragments recovered from the cementing goethitic matrix.The data suggest the following succession of ore formation phases:• Haematitic cores in ooids of both samples formed in the Early to Middle Miocene.• Goethitic cortices of both samples formed in the late Middle to early Late Miocene. This appears to be the age of goethite cortex formation regardless of depth in the core, which does not support the top-down infill model, genetic model proposed by Heim et al (2006).• Wood fragments form a prominent component of the matrix and were ferruginised during the Late Miocene. Thus the data suggest that the unique environmental conditions for the CID formation existed during the Miocene.A methodological implication of this study is that the temperature utilised for He-extraction from iron oxides has a critical impact on the mobility of parent nuclides. The typical ~1100°C laser heating used for crystalline minerals like apatite or zircon induces loss of U and Th and results in erroneously old ages.

The Department of Mineral Resources is the lead agency in mine site environment management and control in New South Wales. The Department introduced a Mining, Rehabilitation and Environmental Management Plan (MREMP) process several years ago in order to integrate the activities of other government agencies who may have a material interest at the mine site. The MREMP process has resulted in a spirit of trust and co-operation between agencies and between agencies and mining companies. The spirit of co-operation has been reflected in greater public confidence that mining is environmentally responsible.

The Hikurangi Margin of eastern North Island New Zealand represents the feather edge of the over-riding Indo-Australian Plate at its convergent boundary with the subducting Pacific Plate. Towards the south, convergence becomes slower and increasingly oblique, and sediment supply from the Southern Alps becomes increasingly rapid. In this environment a 150 km wide, imbricate thrust, accretionary prism has grown since the Miocene, uplifting slope ridges and basins and a range of coastal hills. Offscraping of thick, axially transported, trench-fill turbidites begins in a zone of proto- thrusts, which extends up to 25 km beyond the principle, slope-toe, deformation front. On the slope, landward tilted, trench-slope basins are separated by ridges. The ridges ride up on thrusts that sole out at a major decollement. The decollement dips landwards at 3 degrees to a depth of 14 km at the coast, where it coincides with an onshore zone of high seismicity. Beneath the decollement, about 1 km of consolidated, oceanic sediment is going under the margin with the underlying oceanic basement. Some of these sediments may underplate the frontal ranges to the west and geochemical evidence of subducted sediment is found in the volcanic zone beyond. A rapid decrease in the width of the accretionary prism to the north is associated with a decrease in sediment supply and perhaps with a dislocation in the downgoing plate. To the south, the accretionary prism narrows, swings westward, and merges into the zone of very oblique collision that marks the transform between mirror image subduction to north and south of New Zealand.

For nearly 100 years, the flotation plant metallurgist has often wondered what is happening æbeneath the frothÆ. To assist in unravelling this mystery, new technology has been developed as part of the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association (AMIRA) P9 project, to measure gas dispersion characteristics (such as gas hold-up, superficial gas velocity and bubble size) in industrial flotation cells. These measurements have been conducted in a large number of cells of different types and sizes by researchers from the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) and JKTech. A large database has been developed and the contents of this database are described in this paper. Typical cell characterisation measurements show a wide spread in values, even in the same cell types and sizes performing similar duties. In conventional flotation cells, the typical gas hold-up values range from 3 - 20 per cent, bubble sizes range between 1 and 2 mm, and superficial gas velocity ranges from 1 to 2.5 cm/s. The ranges of cell characterisation measurements given in this paper will enable plant personnel to compare their operation to other similar types of operations from around Australia and the rest of the world, giving opportunities for further improvement to flotation plant operations.

Recoverable copper and gold estimates for resource models and ore control routing decisions at Batu Hijau were initially based on flotation testwork from several commercial laboratories. Due to the greater number of copper and gold assay grade available, regression relationships were developed between assay grades and flotation recoveries. Other recovery controlling variables such as oxidation and lithology were included to improve the regression models. With additional drilling, more flotation work was carried out and the regression models were revised to include the new flotation data, also alteration classification and in situ pH. The regression models were replaced in favour of spatially derived models for ore control and short range mine planning. To harness local variability in the block model, blast hole flotation testing is carried out in unison with routine grade assaying. Recovery data are processed (kriged) simultaneously with grade assay data prior to ore polygon delineation. Short range mine planning utilises this model in conjunction with a spatial recovery model derived from drill core flotation data. Long range mine planning utilises the æhybridÆ recovery model whereby the globally robust regression recovery models are overprinted by a spatial (kriged) recovery estimate where flotation data density is adequate (Phase II reserve).

Aberdare North Colliery is situated on the eastern boundary of the City of Cessnock in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales. Although the area is now noted for its wines and vineyards, the district has a long history based on coal mining. The richest coal seam in the Cessnock district is the Greta Seam, a low ash, high volatile steaming or gas making coal. The seam, up to 10 metres thick, extends over a large area surrounding the city of Cessnock and neighbouring townships such as Bellbird, Aber- dare, Kearsley, Neath, Ellalong, Kurri Kurri and Stanford Merthyr. The Aberdare Colliery, leases, which extend under Aberdare and Cessnock townships, were first worked in 1905 and continued developing pillar panels until the mine closed on 11 Nov- ember, 1960. Coal mining to this time consisted mainly of developing pillars to the 2.4 metre parting and, in some areas, dropping the top coal to the 6 metre parting, thus leaving the pillars intact, the top 1.8 metr-es of coal be- ing left untouched due to the high sulphur content. This paper discusses why Argyle Diamonds adopted thickened tailings disposal in 1985 and how the system was developed over the next seven years. A wide ranging review of the thickened tailings disposal system and the tailings deposit it was producing was carried out during 1992 and 1993. The results of that review led to the abandonment of thickened tailings disposal at Argyle because of serious concerns about the stability of the resultant tailings deposit. The exposure to the risk of liquefaction and an assessment of the consequences if this happened to the thickened tailings deposit are shown. The criteria for selecting the new tailings disposal strategy are then described. The final section of the paper discusses the management strategies that have been put in place. These are designed to: ò reduce the risk posed by the thickened tailings deposit to an acceptable level; ò safely store tailings to the end of mine life; ò produce a land form that can be decommissioned to the satisfaction of Government regulatory bodies.

This paper provides a brief fundamental insight regarding the fabric media concept for liquor filtration. The subject matter will be of interest to metallurgists and engineers with professional responsibility for world class design of solid liquid separation processes and efficient lowest cost operation of existing mineral process plant. Avocet Mining commissioned the worldÆs first mineral liquor clarification process incorporating a fabric media liquor filter at their Lanut gold mine in Sulawesi, in 2004 with design consulting provided by the Australian company SLS Technology Pty Ltd. Development of the technology continues with applied research focused on selecting textile parameters to apply filtration to a wider range of particle and contaminant types, higher solids concentrations, and different process liquors. Liquor filtration with the Fabric Media technology offers an array of attractive benefits. For Avocet Mining, filtration of pregnant liquor directly from the heap leach pad has enabled removal of the sediment pond and sand filters from the traditional process flow sheet, thus providing significant cost and installation time savings. Avocet Mining has recently expressed confidence in the technology indicating selection preference of the technology for the expansion at Lanut and for a new project. The application design window for the Fabric Media concept is extremely flexible with the technology now successfully applied to many different liquor chemistries and application objectives around the world. Potential cost savings for solid liquid separation process plant, such as counter current decantation circuits, clarifier vessels and thickener tanks can be calculated from laboratory measurements or pilot plant demonstrations.

Every text book for blasting in Japan says that Hauser's law can be applied for practice. But recently it came true that there was no historical record about him and no actual datum of his own or other's to testify. According to his theory, the funnel ratio N = r/W in crater test is inversely proportional to the rock strength and proportional to the explosive amount: where r is the radius of crater and W is the burden. But experiment showed the opposite result, and revealed new information. Two kinds of experiment, crater test and boulder blasting of mortar, were carried out to investigate the effects of rock properties on blasting. The material used for test 1 and test 2 was a mortar block (60cm)3 cube, 4 vertical faces of which were used for crater test. The results from Test 1 and test 2 were summarized as follows. The funnel ratio ranges between 2.5 to 4.5 in proportion to rock strength and burden. The standard ratio of 1, reported by Hauser, was not observed in any instances. It was also noted that the funnel ratio is independent of the explosive amount. The material used for boulder blasting, test 3, was a mortar block (40cm)3 cube, in the middle of which was located a vertical borehole for the explosive charge. The results of test 3 were as follows. The necessary explosive amount for boulder blasting is in inverse proportion to the mortar strength. Fragmentation and throw are proportional to the mortar strength.
