Discovered in 1991 by combined plume detection and bottom-tow photography (Binns and Scott, 1993) and for some years thereafter the highest tenor mineral occurrence known on the ocean floor, the PACMANUS hydrothermal field has since been surveyed and sampled in great detail by CSIRO and international research agencies (Binns et al, 1995; Auzende, Urabe and Scientific Party, 1996; Binns et al, 2002; Tivey et al, 2006). Since 2005 commercial surveys employing deep-tow geophysical packages and remotely-operated vehicles (ROVs) have been conducted by Nautilus Minerals Inc and partners within Papua New Guinea-granted offshore exploration licenses (Nautilus Minerals Inc, 2008). Two academic drilling programs have been conducted, one under the international Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) directed at deep structure (Shipboard Scientific Party, 2002; Binns, Barriga and Miller, 2007), and one using a 5 m capable seafloor diamond drill to investigate the immediate subsurface at one site (Petersen et al, 2005). Investigation of a water inflow into Wongawilli Mine in the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales included algal analysis. The determination of algae in the water suggested an external water source. An alternative hypothesis proposed that algae are inherent in a coal mine environment. Investigations to determine the validity of these hypotheses and provide information on the viability and longevity of algae under adverse conditions were conducted in the mine and the laboratory. Results indicated that a mine environment is not natural to algae and is not conducive to their growth. These findings support the hypothesis of introduction of surface water to the mine workings. They indicate that, in the absence of other available techniques, algae can be an effective tracer for use in the determination of a water source.

Developing and operating mines in developing countries is never dull, but continuously challenging in terms of geology and terrain, geography and location, culture and land tenure, environmental and social issues, fiscal regimes and in some cases political risk. In addition, the rapidly changing nature of the communities with little understanding of the nature of mining at the community level requires us to continually manage issues affecting project development and mine operations with greater sensitivity. In frontier regions, people skills can become more essential than technical skills, particularly in dealing with indigenous people. Hence, managing a mining project requires a huge relationship effort.Effective communication with communities of different cultural background and proactive management of issues influencing community aspirations and desires requires not only new skills but also creativity with new concepts on how to deal with social issues under a different cultural context. The involvement of government agencies and NGOs is an important ingredient to creating understanding and collaborative approaches to common social issues. Maintaining stakeholder relationships pays in the long-run and is a useful exercise in getting information feedback from the wider community.

Owing to the 'creeps' and consequent movements in the mines, followed by the recent fire in the southern workings, the whole of the orebody above the 800 ft. level is now very much crushed and broken. The same applies to the hanging wall or overwall coutrny, which has subsided towards the workings, so that for some years past all development work within the lode has had to be carried out with extreme care.The continual but slow subsidence of the overburden into the stopes necessitates a periodical renewal of all gangways in the lode, and, as the subsidence amounts to as much as 60 ft. in places, these new gangways must necessarily pass through the mullock-filling of old stopes in addition to broken ore. They at times pass into the broken ground of the hanging-wall for some distance, where the orebody has widened underneath by the original folding and puckering.

Simple quotation of quantities of coal reserves neglects the relationship between qualities of coals and their efficient use. If exploitation of a deposit is contemplated, its life expectancy can be deduced only if its reserves are estimated according to the coal user's technological standards. A wide range in properties will satisfy a steaming coal, whereas a high vitrinite high rank coal would be preferred for coking and a low inertinite low rank coal for conversion. In competitive trading the buyer's commercial specification may require weighing against the producer's practical ideals, especially when beneficiation is critical. Differentiation of grades in quality of a deposit provides an intelligent understanding of the economic importance of the deposit. The Wongawilli seam of the New South Wales Southern Coalfield exemplifies the effect of quality criteria upon the extent of in situ, recoverable and marketable classes of economic reserves. Effective management of a deposit will result from simultaneous quotation of coal qualities and quantities in a statement of its reserves.

Design of the new cemented hydraulic fill plant was based mainly on experience with a succession of previous fill plants. Two stage cycloning of combined concentrator tailings was introduced. Design of the two stage cyclone configuration was assisted by computer simulation of cyclone performance. Cementing additives, namely Portland cement and ground copper reverberatory furnace slag, drawn from bulk storage, are pre-slurried prior to mixing with hydraulic fill. Quality control of fill being sent under- ground is achieved by a series of automatic control loops. Plant instrumentation was given prime consideration during the design phase. Inventory checks of all mass flow metering equipment are made at regular intervals. Fill is pumped to boreholes at several locations. Details of the equipment and operating procedures for the plant are Discussed.

On 13 October 1993, a shallow earthquake registering 7.1 on the Richter Scale occurred near Tauta in the Finisterre Range of Papua New Guinea (PNG) killing 37 people. The aftershock series lasted three months and resulted in considerable landslide damage that destroyed villages, food gardens and airstrips, and blocked rivers causing catastrophic flooding. These effects have irrevocably altered the form of many of the valleys and rivers draining into the Markham and Ramu valleys.The earthquake occurred in a pilot study area for a landslide hazard mapping project being carried out by the PNG Geological Survey that commen-ced in April 1993. Comparisons made between areas identified as unstable during the study with those damaged by the earthquakes show good correlation.It is concluded that aerial photograph and Landsat TM imagery interpretation can be used with a high degree of confidence to identify potential landslide hazards in mount-ainous terrain. Landslide hazard maps are promoted as a tool for use in the route planning of roads and powerline corridors, as well as for identifying vulnerable communities.

Resin encapsulated rock bolting practices have been adopted by Mount Isa Mines since the early-1980s. Fully encapsulated rock bolt systems meet designated requirements for long-term ground support in the mines. A variety of rock bolts, resins and installation methods have been utilised over this period in underground mining. As a parallel to this evolving application, Mount Isa Mines have tested various resin encapsulated rock bolt systems. Testing has included routine underground pull testing and the development and implementation of the push test for the entire encapsulated bolt length. The latter test enables a greater understanding and representation to be had of the overall mixing, level of encapsulation and capacity of the system. Rock mechanics at Mount Isa Mines undertake evaluation of new bolt systems that become available, in addition to the maintenance of compliance with quality control measures for the existing systems. Improved methods of installation and systems are also investigated to further the cost-effective nature and minimise risks associated with resin rock bolt practices.

The highland region of Papua-New Guinea is relatively rugged terrain where stream gradients are steep. In areas where porphyry copper deposits outcrop the streams commonly expose primary sulphide mineralization in unoxidized rocks. Stream sediment geochemistry combined with float examination and broad geological mapping proved to be an effective tool for detection of outcropping bodies of mineralization. After discovery, detailed stream sediment sampling, soil sampling and rock chip sampling, together with detailed geological mapping proved adequate to delineate drilling targets. Reconnaissance stream sediment sample density was dictated by geology and access and a density of one sample per 25 Km2, or less, was desirable to ensure a high degree of confidence in the programme. Research indicated that the base metals occur in sulphide form in stream sediment and that the -80 mesh size fraction gave the most reliable results. To improve the understanding of the reactions and mechanisms occurring during the leaching of sulfide ores at high temperatures a range of advanced characterisation and sensing tools have been combined to provide a sophisticated and powerful methodology to examine sulfide leaching systems. These include advanced electrochemical methods, surface chemistry and materials characterisation techniques such as synchrotron X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS), X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy (SECM), and in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), together with new robust solid state chemical sensors for in situ real time monitoring of key aqueous chemical parameters. The methodology was employed to investigate various sulfide mineral leaching processes. For example, oxidation of arsenopyrite at elevated temperature involves complicated multiple reactions and the process is strongly influenced by the solution conditions, component speciation and mineralogy. The methodology was used to study this system both ex situ and in situ to gain a detailed understanding of the complex chemical reaction mechanisms operating. These mechanisms are discussed in terms of the observed leaching efficiency. The application of this methodology enables complex sulfide leaching systems to be understood more fully such that process efficiency can be improved.

The Junction Reefs gold bearing deposit is situated on the Lyndhurst Mining Field in mid-west New South Wales. It is located within a triangle of three country towns namely, Blayney, Cowra and Canowindra, all three townships are approximately 25 km from the current operational mining leases. The district is well developed, having been settled for more than a cen- tury. However, being close to the Cities of Orange and Bathurst it is real- lised, instantly, that mining leases have been pegged, in this area, almost boundary to boundary. The lease patterns are, with few exceptions, those which had been estab- lished more than seventy-five years ago. These types of lease patterns may not assist the proper exploitation of a large district where there have been many discoveries of gold, copper and other metals.

This paper presents a case study to reduce the operational cost on the secondary ball mill circuit in the Lead/Zinc Concentrator at Mount Isa Mines. The circuit includes two five-metre diameter ball mills each closed with a cluster of ten 15-inch cyclones. The operating cost for both ball mills is about six million Australian dollars per annum.The concentrator achieves 75 per cent of the plant design capacity with one ball mill operating, but will have to use two ball mills when 100 per cent plant capacity is required. The optimisation study on the circuit identified a new flowsheet that enabled the concentrator to reach 100 per cent of the capacity by using one of the two secondary ball mills. The success of the project utilised the existing equipment rationally and saved the operational cost for one ball mill at full concentrator capacity. A further simplified secondary circuit is proposed using the IsaMill for the secondary grinding duty. Performance of the IsaMill circuit and the potential cost savings are predicted.

BioLix is the term for a new class of biologically-derived lixiviants for precious metals (gold and silver) recovery. BioLix can be used as an alternative to cyanide on virgin and spent ores. The BioLix process is based on inducing microbial enzymatic reactions that generate organo-lixiviant chemicals. The bioprocess involves a two-stage culture strategy. First, specialty microorganisms are cultured to generate a high biomass. Then, a food-grade quality amendment is introduced that forces the microorganisms to produce the organo-lixiviant. The second-stage culture is applied to the ore where the microbial/lixiviant system acts on mineral surfaces to extract precious metals. The process operates at ambient temperatures and near neutral pH. This paper will examine the BioLix process through an extensive laboratory development and demonstration project. Laboratory development consisted of identifying and isolating specialty microorganisms and inducing agents for the production of the organo-lixiviant solutions. A demonstration was performed on low-grade and high-grade oxidised ore from the Buffalo Valley mine in Nevada, USA. Results indicate that the BioLix process was comparable to cyanide in terms of gold recovery and operated at near neutral pH and ambient temperatures. Applications for the BioLix process will be discussed including spent-ore re-leaching, cyanide replacement for virgin ore, and in situ mining.

The past decade has seen a great increase in activity in deep seismic reflection profiling of the continental crust. Some 20 countries have conducted field experiments and the total length of deep seismic profiles surveyed to date is approximately 25,000 km. This total is very large compared to the quantity of such data that existed previously, but very small compared to the total length of seis- mic profiles of the shallow crust carried out for petroleum exploration, which some- times has exceeded 600,000 km on land in one year alone and 1,600,000 km/yr on land and sea. Furthermore, 25,000 km of seismic pro- filing corresponds to exploration of only a tiny fraction of the total volume of the entire continental crust. Thus at this stage of development of the subject, one must be wary of generalizations that are based on these limited data and then ex- tended in scope to include the crust everywhere. The state of the subject is such that virtually every new seismic line reveals totally unexpected seismic fea- tures, a sign that the subject is in its major discovery phase and a warning to the generalizers. Nevertheless, in addition to much new information on deep crustal structure in specific locations, some broad consequences of application of this powerful geophysical technique to a region of the earth not pre- viously explored in this manner are be- coming clear. One is that, as seismic data on the deep continental crust become more abundant and more revealing of complexi- ties, the deep crust can be far better re- lated to rocks at the surface. Conse- quently, the geological style of reason- ing is now being extended from its normal domain of the near-surface to include the deepest crust in a comprehensive story of the evolution of the continents. This change is a subtle but important one and is evident, for example, in some cross sec- tions of the North American Transect Pro- gram, which show surface geology extended in a consistent, though speculative, manner to the top of the mantle. The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) has been successfully using mini computers in its open cut strip and pit coal planning for the past six years. A recent development within the computerised Seam deposit User oriented Mine Planning System (SUMPS) provides the facility for the generation, evaluation, and simulation of colliery workings.Existing computer programs for collieries were studied, but none met the requirements of BHP's underground mine planners.Consequently, it was decided to develop programs, based on those existing within BHP for open cut strip and open cut pit mine planning. The new planning facility was designed to enable any number of proposed colliery developments and operating plans to be evaluated against optimistic, most likely and pessimistic geological lease area interpretations.In mine planning, sensitivity studies should be conducted to determine the likely effects on production, development costs and colliery economics of changes in mine design and budgeted equipment productivity. By automating the manual calculations involved, the computer programs provide the ability to conduct numerous and extensive sensitivity studies. Hence an optimum mine design for budgeting purposes can be derived quickly with an improved degree of confidence in the long term viability of the proposed development.

"Mining is an inherently risky business: from the technical, environmental, social and economic uncertainties associated with advancing an exploration concept to a viable project; to the risks associated with the operating, market, and safety risks and uncertainties attached to a developed mine; and the final mine closure process.Investors and other stakeholders assessing the risk, opportunity and relative value associated with a resource project need to appreciate the project in its correct context. Errors, omissions, biased reporting or conflicting information in reporting may result in a misinterpretation of technical and financial results, leading to biased estimates or assumptions on project value (Noppé, 2016).Simplistically, a project can be assessed on three key areas for positioning the project in its correct relative context, namely: the project development stage the confidence in the estimated quantities and qualities of the resource, reserve and/or product the level of accuracy, precision and confidence in the technical and economic studies supporting the project.In the latter case, the ‘technical and economic’ information includes assessing the necessary social, environmental and commercial/legal/governmental approvals for the project.Responsible management of a resource project through its full life cycle relies on competent and dependable control and direction being effectively provided by the technical, business and board leadership of the organisation. The mining industry is facing tremendous economic challenges. Fluctuating and depressed commodity prices, the ever-increasing pressure from environmental legislation and the competing global opportunities for capital investment are placing enormous strains on every aspect of the mining business. At the same time, mines are generally becoming older and deeper with all the logistical and rock mechanics difficulties that this entails. In the face of these new challenges the industry looks to technological advances to make operations more efficient and profitable. One approach is to develop and implement highly automated and computerised equipment as part of a trend towards major reductions in the underground workforce. This approach requires more capital investment rather than less and requires a more sophisticated and well-educated workforce with skills which are generally in high demand in society as a whole. It is difficult to see how the benefit that can be gained from such technology can justify the expenditures necessary to make it operate reliably underground on a daily basis. Nor is it easy to foresee how the mining industry, based as it is often in very remote areas, will be able to hire and retain sufficient numbers of people to maintain such fleets of equipment. Another approach, and the one which I favour, is the implementation of much greater control over the whole of the mining process. Mining is essentially a very simple process - we break rock and move it. The most cost-effective means of moving and processing the mining product depends entirely on the way it is broken - it depends on primary fragmentation by blasting. I propose that the way forward for the industry in the face of our present difficulties, is not new technology but is to utilise the level of technology which currently exists in ways which have traditionally been regarded as too difficult or too inflexible - improved fragmentation and the use of conveyors. The technical success of this approach depends on the complete re-design of the ore handling system from the face or stope drawpoint to surface. The fundamental issue which determines the success of this approach is designed fragmentation.

Relocation into the Lichtenberg open pit mine of about 110 million m3 of sulfide-bearing and ARD-generating waste rock piled up on the surface is the most important and cost-intensive single surface restoration project conducted by WISMUT GmbH at the former Ronneburg uranium mining site. The waste rock comprises for the most part Palaeozoic shales, limestones and diabases with pyrite contents of up to seven per cent. Waste pile relocation began in 1992 and is scheduled to be completed by 2007. The approach used for relocation has been extensively described elsewhere (Jakubick et al, 1997; Hockley et al, 1997; Chapman et al, 1998; Paul, 2003). Following completion of the backfill that will be up to 60 m above the initial ground level, a dry cover will be placed on top of the backfilled mine wastes. The area to be covered amounts to about 220 ha. Design planning for the final cover placement of which is to begin in 2004 had to be based on a comprehensive cost-benefit analysis over and above compliance with legal requirements. The crucial question to be answered in this respect was to determine û in addition to the expenditure required to ensure reuse, radiation protection and soil protection û the extent to which additional time, effort and money were justified in order to minimise contaminant release from the unsaturated portion of the backfilled pit contributing to total releases into the ground water and possibly achieve savings in long-term operating costs for the on-site water treatment plant. Optimisation was based on contaminant balance modelling for the entire site reproducing dominant physical and geochemical processes. Among the specifics underlying the cover design is that contaminant release from the backfilled open pit must not be considered independently of that from the adjacent flooded underground mine and that a major part of the backfilled open pit will also be submerged. Following weighing of cover-related short- and long-term costs it was found that higher construction costs for the various cover options will not be offset by cost savings in the long-term water treatment. As a consequence of pit flooding, even a costly multiple cover including an impermeable layer will only insignificantly impact on concentrations and loads at ground water spill over points. As a result of comprehensive studies and investigations, a combined cover of cohesive soil material from on-site excavation overlain by a 0.4 m thick storage layer to restore natural soil functions for revegetation was derived and submitted for approval. Together with hydraulic measures, this approach is to meet any requirement in terms of radiology, water protection, stability, erosion protection, and reuse.

The drilling and evaluation of bore cores provides the best available statistical basis for characterizing a coal prospect. Important, long-term decisions by management frequently must be based on the results. The majority of coal mined presently is used for steam raising or the production of metallurgical coke. Common bore core tests and analyses appropriate to this usage can be cate- gorized as non-destructive, chemical, physical, petrographic, caking/plastometric and propert- ies of non-coal material. The major tests within each category are described. Certain specific information from the bore cores is required by the coal geologist, mining engineer, coal preparation engineer and the user, either individually or as a group. The optimal bore core evaluation test pro- gramme is the one which satisfies the needs of all the professional disciplines with the grtatest speed and at minimal cost. The principal steps in such a programme are listed. There is an urgent need for a bold new Australian standard to provide the necessary guidelines to an industry which at present lacks uniformity in its approach to the task.

A Seam deposit User oriented Mine Planning System (SUMPS) was developed by The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) at its head office in Melbourne. It is one of the computer mine planning systems developed by the Corporate Data Processing (CDP) section of BHP. To date it has been employed in the feasibility study of four coal prospects for the BHP Group, including Gregory in central Queensland - Ham and Van Hoorn (1978). It was also used in detailed short term mine planning for Gregory. A recent application was in the feasibility study of Saxonvale, a multi seam coal deposit in New South Wales with seams up to 20 m thick. The other two applications of SUMPS were also on thick multi seam coal deposits. Development of programs for the underground sub-section of SUMPS is continuing. SUMPS was developed and implemented on mini computers with graphics and plotting peripherals. The company's philosophy towards computing is one of centralized development and project planning, with transfer of hardware and software to site once the mine becomes Operational.
