In recent years a number of explosive blends including ANFO, emulsion and watergel products have been used in a variety of ground types and applications. These `standard' explosives' technologies are not new, but out of the uses and applications, have sprung a new generation of tailored explosives that match the ground type and the operating environment. This is in stark contrast to the norm, where various patterns and loading configurations have traditionally been designed to accommodate the explosive. This paper discusses these tailored explosives and the explosives' technology behind why they work. Active tailoring of explosive formulations can save mining dollars while essentially leaving the explosive price unchanged. Tailoring explosives may lead to increased rock breakage, heave, digging rates; lower digging maintenance costs and in some cases replacing earth moving machinery altogether. Tailored explosives may have other benefits such as reduced over pressure compared with standard alternatives. The tailoring of explosive performance generally involves three major methods (other than changing the bulk density and sensitivity): (i) replacing fast burning reactants with slower burning reactants or vice versa; or (ii) leaving the explosive intact and diluting the entire explosive with slow burning or `inert' material; or (iii) changing the concentration of the fuel/oxidiser mix. When tailoring explosives for particular applications, authorising, testing, costing, manufacturing, and delivery systems must also be taken into account.

The mill area of PT Freeport Indonesia is located in a valley surrounded by steep natural slope, characterised by extreme topography with mountains rising to above 4500 m within 100 km from the seashore. The valleys are deeply embedded into the mountainous terrain and bordered by steep natural slopes. Vertical or overhanging lime walls are interrupted by steep vegetated screen sections containing accumulated loose material from weathering processes and ancient rock falls and/or debris flows/avalanches. The climate can be best described as alpine subtropical with an accumulated rainfall of more than 5000 mm per year. Occasional snowfalls and superficial freezing above 4000 m elevation leads to heavy weathering of the superficial rock layers and along open joints and fractures. The mill area is a crucial and strategic infrastructure for the entire mining operation which is best characterised as a high density industrial area with facilities including water tanks, power generators, crusher, and concentrating facilities including office buildings and workshops as well as access tracks to the underground mining blocks. Considering the local topography, the restricted space conditions and the number of technical installations, the facilities are likely to be affected and highly vulnerable to rock fall from the surrounding slopes. In order to minimise the rock fall hazard three rock fence barriers area were constructed at the mill area. The 7.5 rock fence barriers were designed with the maximum capacity of 5000 kJ. These are the largest capacity of rock fall barriers ever constructed in Indonesia. The total length of the barriers for the three locations was 126 m. The biggest challenge of this project was the construction of the barrier at West Gulley, which was constructed at 300 m above ground level. For this site, construction access was undertaken using helicopter. This presentation discusses the design of the mitigation structures as well as the construction approach and stages of the barriers. Please note: This paper is abstract only.

This paper presents the ventilation problem faced by Jaduguda uranium mine, operated up to a depth of 905 m. The first two stages of the mine workings are up to 555 m, which are nearly exhausted. The third stage of the mine is from 555 m to 905 m and presently most of the stopping and development activities of the mine are carried out in the third stage. The total available intake quantity in the third stage was only 21 m3/s. As a result, the mine was facing a radiation hazard. The different instruments and the methods used for monitoring of radiation levels are also presented in the paper. It was observed that the average individual effective dose (external + internal) of radiation workers in Jaduguda mine increased from 6.93 mSv/y in 1995 to 9.5 mSv/y in 2001 and during this period the average individual effective dose of mine workers of the world was less than 5 mSv/y. Keeping this problem in view, a detailed ventilation investigation has been carried out in this mine. Initially the requirements of intake air quantity have been assessed by carrying out field investigation in different stopes and it was found that the third stage workings require nearly 100 m3/s. A detailed ventilation survey has been carried out in the total ventilation network and a basic ventilation model of the mine has been prepared. Different alternative schemes for effectively ventilating the third stage workings of the mine were simulated and a set of recommendations were made for implementation. The recommendations were partially implemented in 2002. As a result the total intake quantity to third stage workings increased to nearly 70 m3/s and the average individual effective dose (internal + external) of mine workers came down from 9.5 mSv/y in 2001 to 6.65 mSv/y and 6.60 mSv/y in 2002 and 2003 respectively. The implementation of remaining recommendations is in progress. Finally, a mathematical model has been formulated from the first principle for predicting air quantity requirements in cut and fill stopes in uranium mines and this model is being validated for further use.

Contour banks and waterways are standard soil conservation measures to assist farmers reduce the impact of gully erosion on sloping cropping land by reducing the slope length to the interval between the banks. The Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) developed by the USA Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service in 1930s predicts the long-term average annual soil loss (A).The equation is the product of the rainfall erosivity factor (R), the soil erodibility factor (K), the topographic factors of slope length and angle (L and S) and the cropping management factors (C and P). Contour banks reduce the slope length (L) only.Contour banks are a constructed earth embankment, incorporating a channel on the upslope side, typically traversing a slope on or close to the contour to control and/or prevent the erosion of that slope. The banks are also referred to as graded banks, terraces, or bunds (DSITI 2015). Contour banks are either broad based or narrow based. Broad based banks allow the passage of the machinery over the banks whilst narrow based bank batters are too steep preventing the passage of machinery. Waterways are a stable, longitudinally sloping water disposal area of sufficient capacity used to discharge surplus runoff from the contour bank and to allow it to flow to a lower level without causing erosion (DSITI 2015).The mining industry must decide what the role for contour banks and waterways is in each operation’s rehabilitation and closure plan.CITATION:Merritt, J L, 2018. In the Illawarra District of New South Wales, Mines were traditionally developed from the seabord. The advantages were close access to the working faces and a minimal depth of cover. Travelling times to the working faces have become prohibitive in many cases due to progressive westward development of the mines. As a result, additional vent- ilation shafts were sunk to service existing mines and new mines were established west of the Illawarra escarpment. Mining operations west of the escarpment are now being conducted at an increasing depth of cover and can be effected by gas related problems such as high seam gas emission rates and gas outbursts.

A key parameter affecting the performance of gravity thickeners in hydrometallurgical processing operations is the aggregation state of the feed after the addition of a flocculant. New procedures which measure the settling ratelsize relationship and the size distribution of aggregates in their process liquors have been used to quantify the aggregation state of the feedwell, overflow and underflow streams in a tailings thickener. The data obtained have been related to the thickener's operation and to a change in the flocculant dosage. A comparison is also made between the settling rate/size relationships determined with these new procedures and the mud-line settling rates from cylinder tests.

Brown and Chitombo (2007) indicated that during the last two decades, the international mining industry has been using mainly mass mining methods to extract safely and economically some of the important commodities such as copper, diamonds, gold, iron and nickel. Mass mining may be implemented either on the surface through large open pits or underground using mining methods such as sublevel, block and panel caving. Developments in the last ten years have demonstrated that caving methods can be applied successfully in strong orebodies at greater depths and in increasingly challenging geotechnical environments for which more traditional mining methods would be unsuitable, unsafe and/or uneconomic. These underground mass mining challenges require æfront endÆ investigation and analysis, robust engineering design and disciplined implementation and operation. Newcrest Mining Limited has focused its efforts on the development of gold/copper projects of substantial scale and margin. To help achieve this, the company is applying and further developing mass mining methods. These include large-scale open pits (OP) and underground mining methods such as sublevel (SLC), block (BC) and panel caving (PC). Block and panel caving now offer economies of scale opportunities for Newcrest to achieve high production rates at lower production costs; thus enabling the exploitation of mineral endowments at higher margins. This paper discusses the practical aspects of caving technologies that Newcrest continues to develop through its expertise at Telfer and Ridgeway SLC operations, Ridgeway Deeps BC and Cadia East PC projects.

At present the source of virgin iron for steel produced in New Zealand is titanomagne- tite extracted from titaniferous beachsands. Some of these beachsand deposits contain extractable quantities of ilmenite as well as titanomagnetite and both minerals represent challenging sources of vanadium and titanium products in addition to iron. This study looks at some theoretical aspects of smelting these ores directly with coal rather than with electric power, and takes into consideration the properties of the raw materials, the thermodynamics of possible process routes and the background of the economics involved.

This paper presents a research project referring to the stability of submerged walls of open pit mines and the actual state of development. Obviously the slope stability analysis is always a rather complex problem, because it is difficult to reduce the problem to a design scheme and to define the available in situ soil strength. Especially the design of submerged slopes represents a problem. The state-of-the-art slope stability analysis is based on a simplified modelling of slope failure and soil behaviour and with this predicted stable slope inclinations of sand slopes below water-table are less then half the angle of internal friction. Slope angles calculated like that canÆt satisfy the mining companies. One of the problems that have to be solved is the reliable determination of the long-term stability of non-cohesive, submerged slopes, which is not only dependant on geotechnical and hydrogeological parameters of the subsoil, but is also significantly influenced by how the slopes are made. The research project points at the relations between mining and geotechnical engineering with the main aim to find a more suitable stability analysis which takes both soil behaviour and mining influences into account.

Oxy-ACETYLENE system of welding and cutting is at present practised in two forms, which may be described as the high and lowpressure systems. In the high-pressure system the two gases, oxygen and acetylene, are delivered. to the blow-pipe under pressure from properly constructed trade cylinders. Oxygen cylinders are in two sizes, each containing 100 and 200 cub. ft. of gas respectively. These cylinders are charged to a pressure of 120 atmospheres, or 1800 lb. per sq. in. approximately. The acetylene cylinders are made in one size as far as the writer knows, and contain 200 cub. ft. of acetylene gas at a pressure of 10 atmospheres. Each cylinder is provided with a valve and connection for attaching a regulator to "break down" the high pressure in the cylinders to the necessary low working pressure of the blow-pipes, and to deliver the two gases at a constant pressure irrespective of the variable pressures in the cylinders. These regulators can be adjusted down to as low as 1 lb. and are provided with two pressure gaugesone reading the contents of the cylinder in atmospheres, and the other the working pressure in lb. per sq. in. The high-pressure, or "two cylinder" system is compact and can readily be transported from place to place in the works. For this purpose the two cylinders are mounted on an easy-running 4-wheeled truck, which the operator and assistant find no difficulty in manipulating. In the low-pressure system the two gases are delivered to the blow-pipe, one from the oxygen cylinder and the other from the acetylene gas generating plant, which consists of the following:Generating cylinder, half filled with water, into which the cathoide is plunged. This paper provides an overview of the future for underground thick seam coal mining in Australia. It reviews the available and anticipated mining systems and technologies which may be adopted to mine coal seams of greater than 4.5 m thickness, together with an assessment of the likely technological and operational risks and challenges involved. This overview of mining systems is presented in the context of both current and recently completed research projects funded through the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP). The projects have been joint investigations between The University of New South Wales Mining Research Centre (UMRC) and the Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE). Outcomes from the projects have included an appraisal and classification of underground thick seam reserves in Australia and their suitability for each mining method.

edicted increase in, Aluminium production and the possibility of a diminishing supply of petroleum coke for anode electrodes in alumina reduction cells makes it desirable to find alternative electrode materials. Brown coal char, with a lower ash content and with an elemental purity similar to petroleum coke, has been produced by leaching in hydrochloric acid, washing with water and charring at 115000. The cost of processing is estimated to be competitive with petroleum coke. Without further processing the bulk density and real density were undesirably low, but. by briquetting the coal before charring and crushing, the bulk density was improved to 92 per cent of the petroleum coke value and the Particle density was improved to 92 per cent of the density of petroleum coke by water-displacement or 75 per cent by mercury displacement. Pre-baked electrodes were prepared from the char alone, mixtures of petroleum coke and char and from petroleum coke alone, all bonded with coal tar pitch. The electrodes were tested for the usual physical properties and were, evaluated for performance in a laboratory size alumina reduction cell. Electrodes based on brown coal char alone were found to be inferior in physical properties, and performance, but mixtures of the char and petroleum coke, despite poorer density, electrical resistivity and carbon consumption on a theoretical basis, in performance tests gave up to 17 per cent better carbon consumption per weight of aluminium produced and 21 percent better electrical current efficiency than the electrodes based on petroleum coke alone. It is suggested that larger scale tests are warranted.

Several styles of copper (Cu) mineralisation are present at Sepon. Large tonnage, low grade skarn and carbonate replacement massive sulfide mineralisation occur within the metamorphic aureole of Permian-aged rhyodacite porphyry intrusions (RDPs). During exhumation and supergene weathering, this primary mineralisation has been upgraded to form high-grade chalcocite enriched zones up to 50 m thick, which comprises the bulk of Cu resources currently being mined at Sepon. Groundwaters remobilise Cu to form exotic accumulations of malachite that are locally hosted in irregular karsts in carbonate rocks, found up to 1000 m from source mineralisation. Khanong is the largest Cu deposit and recent discoveries have been made at Thengkham South, Thengkham North and Phabing. All deposits have formed by similar processes of mineralisation. However, all differ due to local variations in host rock lithology, structural setting, and hydrological conditions. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A portable surface impedance meter has been tested extensively over a wide variety of geological formations both in Australia and elsewhere. It has proved a useful geophysical too] for relatively shallow mapping (i.e less than 100 metres depth) of faults, intrusions, dykes and conductive ore veins and can be used as a depth probe for overburden and glacial ice. Case studies involving coal seam mapping at Collide (Qld. Australia), galena ore vein location at Zeehan (Tas. Australia) and glacial ice probing on the Brewster Glacier (South Island, New Zealand) are detailed. The first results of a similar unit using a lower frequency with consequential increase in depth of penetration will be presented. The application of VLF measurements to monitor blasting in mines and in the location of earthquake epicentres will also he introduced.

Following a summary of the development of a BF model using aerodynamic relationship and bulk fines index a blast furnace policy model is presented complete with the development of nomograms and featuring production rate, oil rate and total fuel rate. Application of the blast furnace model is then illustrated using No. 5 Port Talbot as an example. It is also shown how the policy model assists in ore allocation in the British Steel Corporation. Further developments which have recently occurred in the correlation between the bulk fines index and the permeability coefficient are detailed and a comparison made with a number of furnaces operated elsewhere. The implications of the comparisons made are that high driving rates are possible with burden containing a high proportion of sinter only if the burden behaviour in the lower parts of the furnace permits high driving rates with a steady gas distribution and low pressure drop. It is concluded that the value of a simple set of equations resulting from the model assisted furnace operators to pin-point likely causes of failure to reach or sustain target production rates.

During a programme of explosive performance evaluation at Hamersley Iron, Mount Tom Price Mining Operations, the relative performances of a range of heavy ANFO explosives were compared during normal production blasting operations. In addition, a number of heavily instrumented single hole blasting trials were conducted with each product type. The blasts were monitored in terms of blasthole velocity of detonation (VOD), measured using multi-point plasma conductivity probes with up to 16 measurements per blasthole. Up to 16 blastholes were monitored in each production blast. The results of measurements show a marked difference in performance of all heavy ANFO products between single blastholes and full production blasts, indicating a significant degree of interaction between blastholes in production blasting. The interaction is shown to result in a loss of detonation pressure of explosive, and considered to lead to a loss of fragmentation. The degree of interaction is seen to increase with increasing emulsion content in the products, and is more pronounced in some explosive types than others. The paper presents the methods of measurement and analysis, and the results of monitoring, together with implications on blast design and application of heavy ANFO products.

A novel system has been developed using computer imaging techniques to make on-line measurements of material on a moving conveyor. Meas- urements of the mass or volume of conveyor materials are important in large open pit mining operations such as those operated by the State Elec- tricity Commission of Victoria (SECV). Such on-line measurements can be used for monitoring and controlling the production and transport of coal or overburden, and to assist in maintaining production levels. This paper describes a conveyor burden volume measurement system which is currently under development at the Research and Development Department of the SECV and although targeted initially for use in the Commission's open cut mines, the system is suitable for use on any open conveyor system. A basic developmental system has been built to demon- strate the viability of the technique used and further work on the system is planned. The measurement technique and the major components which have been developed as part of the system are described, some comparisons are drawn with other existing measurement systems and potential errors and future development are discussed.
