Tuyere coke samples have been taken through the tuyere openings of B.H.P. International Blast Furnaces since 1978 with Whyalla No. 2 Blast Furnace taking samples on a regular basis since 1982. The degradation of coke during it's passage through the Blast Furnace can be measured and the relationships between these data, feed coke data and blast furnace operating data demonstrated. Tuyere coke sampling has been useful in revealing misleading external coke testing results and is still the method to monitor directly the performance of coke within the Blast Furnace.

The process of flash smelting of nickel sulphide ores, as practised at the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter, is described. The critical variables in the operation of this process are identified. The design of a pilot-scale, turbulent-jet flash reactor which models the essential features of the industrial smelter is described. A report of its operation and application to an investigation of the ignition of particles of sulphide species is given.

Victoria has an extensive brown coal resource, 202,000 Mt, of which 43,300 Mt is regarded as readily recoverable. This brown coal is located principally in the Latrobe Valley as thick seams and is being extracted at low cost primarily to support base-load electrical power generation. The high moisture content of the coal is partially off-set in many applications by the high reactivity of the coal and the generally low levels of potential pollutants such as ash, sulphur and nitrogen in the coal. Large scale development of this brown coal resource began in the 1920's. In addition to electricity generation, it is used for briquette production, carbonisation of briquettes to char and was gasified for town gas supply to Melbourne (1956 - 1969). The BCLV coal to oil pilot plant at Morwell is a major new initiative in the use of Victorian brown coal. Many other new developments are in place and emerging in the utilization of low rank coals. Examples of these developments are, the large-scale gasification of lignites in the USA, and value-added products such as bulk chars, solid fuels, activated carbons and coal-water mixtures. The Government of Victoria has created the Coal Corporation of Victoria to promote current sales of briquettes and to encourage further new industrial developments based on the State's brown coal resources, in particular the Loy Yang coalfield. The Coal Corporation also has a vigorous product and process oriented research and development Programme.

The Australian mining industry can expect to be working internationally competitive high quality coal mines during the twenty-first century. Cost efficient mining methods such as high productivity longwall units with heavy reliance on remote control will be standard and worked by well paid and intensively trained operators. Major changes in mine ventilation engineering can be expected in the use of computers and mine telemetry, the understanding of the mine environment and the frequency of mine disasters, the utilization of mine air contaminants for profitable purposes and the provision of a pleasant and comfortable work environment. New approaches to mine ventilation such as air recirculation will have been considered. There will be an increased need for highly trained ventilation engineers. With the present pace of technological change, quite revolutionary new approaches to mining and ventilation can be expected by the end of the twenty-first century.

It's my privilege to welcome you here this afternoon on behalf of the Sydney Branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. This is a most important gathering. You, the delegates, represent what is probably the most influential cross-section of the mining investment community and the oil and gas investment community to meet as a group during the last decade. We are meeting today and tomorrow to review two related issues that will have far reaching implications for the effective use of capital by the natural resources sector in the 1990's. The views which will emerge over the two days will almost certainly 'influence the availability of new capital to the companies in the natural resources sector for the decade ahead. The two principal themes of Minval '89 are, first, the valuation of mining and oil and gas assets and securities, and second, disclosure and reporting requirements in the capital markets which relate specifically to natural resources companies. This conference is taking place at a time when further consolidation and rationalisation appears likely within the mining industry. Although the base metals and other sectors of the industry are enjoying profitability not seen since the early 1980's there is caution about committing to new capacity which could bring about a return to the low prices and excess supply which prevailed during much of the last ten years. These conditions have led to increased takeover activity within the mining industry overseas, and similar trends are as evident here in Australia as they are elsewhere. Recognition of value is therefore likely to become more important than ever before in preserving shareholder wealth, for creating new wealth and for preserving the financial health of the resources industry in the future. Valuation therefore is the first theme of the conference.

Coal mining in the Illawarra commenced in 1848. By the early twentieth century mining operations were spread over quite a distance along the coast centred on Wollongong. By this time there were already numerous tunnel mines and one shaft mine. Coal was first reported in Illawarra by Lieutenant Flinders on a voyage of exploration, southerly along the coast from Sydney in 1796. Because of the topography, particularly the escarpment and the narrowness of the coastal plain, access from Sydney was not easy by land and the normal access was by sea. It was not until some coastal areas had been developed for agricultural purposes that the mining of the seams on the South Coast commenced for the supp- ly of fuel. The most important mines in the early nineteenth century were Bulli and Osborne Wallsend. In general, coal was won from the tunnel mines and was transported directly, usually by tramway, to the nearest shipping point. Considerable hardship attended the earliest attempts at mining coal in regard to materials for mining and the way of life of the miners in the vicinity of the mines. With the growth of production and the installation of coke ovens at some mines the area, hitherto virgin bush- land, began to take on a more industrialised appearance. Estimation of productivity is a key factor in the design of hydraulic mines and in assessing their economic feasibility. A published Russian formula for hydraulic mining monitor cutting rates overstated productivity by up to 2 tonnes per minute (251%) when applied to Solid EnergyÆs hydraulic mines. A new formula, taking into account additional productivity factors, was derived by Solid Energy and produced an acceptable correlation between predicted and actual cutting rates inNew Zealand and overseas hydraulic mines, with an average error of approximately 0.1 tonnes per minute.   Another key factor in hydraulic mine design is the transport of coal slurry via flumes. Solid Energy carried out a series of 80 full scale tests in a surface flume installation, varying the gradient and coal:water ratio. Both steel flumes and plastic-lined flumes were evaluated. A modification of the Chezy Open Channel Flow formula, including a factor for slurry density, gave a reasonable correlation between actual and predicted flows. It is believed that this Solid Energy formula is suitable for the design of flume installations for hydraulic mining.

Dispersed gem corundum is mined from placers, commonly from basalt fields, as occurs along eastern Australian and Asian continental margins. New laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analysis (LA-ICP-MS) of Australian corundum allows genetic distinctions among these suites and gives clues to their primary lithospheric sources prior to basaltic delivery. Bimodal corundum suites at Barrington Tops, Cudgegong-Gulgong-Macquarie River and Yarrowitch, New South Wales (NSW), include lower Ga, higher Mg æmetamorphicÆ and higher Ga, lower Mg æmagmaticÆ groups. The Barrington Tops æmetamorphicÆ corundum is more Fe-rich (av 4500 - 7100 ppm) than Cudgegong- Macquarie River equivalents (av Fe 1800 - 2100 ppm). Yarrowitch corundum is relatively low in Fe, Ti and Cr. Along with other eastern Australian data (north-east Tasmania; New England, NSW) and from gem fields elsewhere, the combined trace element and O isotope data, reveal considerable geographic and genetic variations within the corundum suites. A few corundum groups contain noticeable Be, Sn, Ta, Nb, a particular genetic message that also precludes easy distinction of treated corundum in the gem trade. Expanding geochemical, inclusion and geochronological data on gem corundum hold promise for characterising derivative gem corundum on both geographic and genetic features.

If the record of maj or proj ects in Australia is taken into account, it is apparent, the proper planning of an industrial relations strategy for many such projects has been ill considered by project developers. The recognition of the need to develop a plan from the initial feasibility study has been forced on those promoting new projects by the publicity given to the Australian industrial relations record. The delays in delivery caused by factors supposedly out of the project's control are often given for non-performance of contract and used as an excuse for limiting further development. Many of the problems experienced in project development can be overcome with sound industrial relations planning. The promises given in the euphoria of the early stages of a project relating to price and delivery often become a burden for the future because the complexities of the Australian Industrial Relations Systems are not understood or considered. The recognition by senior executives of their responsibilities in this area will contribute greatly to a new era of project development.

The Australian underground contract mining industry has grown from almost nothing 25 years ago to the point today where half the countryÆs underground mines are using contractors to produce their ore and do their development. This growth was driven by the need to change poor industrial relations and work practices in sectors of the industry, along with the needs of many small gold mine owners to preserve their capital by using contractors to do their mining. The industry is dominated by two major privately owned contractors with a number of other publicly and privately owned contractors making up the balance of the market. This paper discusses the important trends in the contract mining industry and the directions it may take in the next few years.

Ventilation, air leakage, and various cutting, loading and support movement operations all have a role in dust distribution on longwall faces as shown by the results of a large number of dust measurements on different longwall operations in the Bulli seam on the South Coast. It is concluded that leakage of air on the face has demonstrable mfluence on the exposure of the shearer operator to dust level. It is possible to calculate dust generated by various elements of a rrurung operation on the face from a single point measurement. In the examination of dust deposition from the source of generation as a function of particle size, it is found that respirable dust can remain airborne over long distances without any significant drop in concentration, if unobstructed.

Before proceeding to the main portion of the above subject, a few remarks as to the general question of our mill slimes seem called for, and, with this in view, it is intended to briefly refer to the salient, points connected with their production, treatment and disposal at the mills.It is well known that, owing to the inticate mixture of the constituents of our sulphide ore, 'a very great deal of crushing and grinding is required to detach the particles of galena from the zinc blende and gangue of the ore, and it will be readily understood that, in this operation, a considerable amount of the material is converted into a slime which consists of minute, but ,(as can be see~ under a glass) well definied particles of all the constituents· 6f the ore arid combinations thereof, the relative proportions of which depend on the dual characteristics of hardness and abundance of the different constituents. Gold mineralisation at the Macraes Gold Project is hosted in the Hyde-Macraes shear zone and can be traced for ~30km along strike, although economic resources are confined to a 7 km section in the vicinity of the Macraes township. The shear zone, which typically dips at a low angle (~20 o ) to the NE, is bounded by an upper hanging wall shear and a lower footwall fault. Mineralisation occurs along the hangingwall of the shear zone as well as in low angle concordant shears and stockworks. Ore types include graphitic cataclasites with variable amounts of quartz veining, ælode schistsÆ and quartz-vein stockworks. Rehabilitation at the mine has focused on creating an environmentally benign site dominated by pasture to allow continuation of the traditional pre-mine farming economy. Changing regional economics, continued urbanisation and a reduction in traditional employment opportunities has seen a rethink in the long-term rehabilitation outcomes. The community has recognised that the rehabilitated site will provide the basis of a viable tourism venture and the creation of a Heritage and Art Park (working title æGolden Point ParkÆ) is the culmination of that process.

The design and installation of a major on-line stores and purchasing system, with built-in maintenance reporting and plant register capabilities, needs more than just close attention to computer design details. When the system must be available almost 24 hours a day to a number of mine stores sites, and is used by a variety of mining staff including engineers and stores clerks, as well as by remote purchasing and office staff, then simplicity of use, availability, fast response times, and other human factors become vital. Critical aspects include easy to use screen design, involving a change from the traditional hierarchical menu system, and fallback and recovery to the last transaction. Business, people and systems objectives need to be established at the preliminary design stage, so that results can be measured and corrective action taken. The amount and type of user involvement and training, at all stages from initial design to systems tuning, has a major effect on people wanting to use the system. Active user participation in systems design, data definition and collection, and use of relevant training material is needed. Project management and design problems can arise in working with database oriented computer staff, and certain design features are found useful in ensuring a responsive, robust overall system.

The Burragorang Valley lies approx. 95 km by road south west of Sydney and some 35 km west of Camden. It is over 80 km in length and varies in width from 3 km to over 16 km. Geologically, the history of the Burragorang Valley is of interest. It was referred to by early geographers and N.R.M.A. booklets as the largest sunken valley in Australia. This description is incorrect as it is a water worn valley formed by the dissection of an uplift in the south western portion of the large Sydney Sedimentary Basin. Ages2 ago there extended right across the Blue Mountains, a continuous tableland into which the Nattai, Wollondilly and Cox's Rivers have carved out the formation of the Burragorang. This dissection together with other valleys such as the Megalong, Jamieson and Grose, formed part of the eastward drainage pattern of the uplifting tableland into the Pacific ocean. HISTORY Up until the late 1880's the mining industry acquired a considerable proportion of its capital needs from domestic sources. Exchanges were established wherever major new fields were opened and Ballarat, Bendigo, Charters Towers, Coolgardie, Kalgoorlie and Silverton all boasted active trading in mining shares. For much of the first half of this century there was only modest developments in the mining industry and its capital require- ments were correspondingly lower. RECENT EXPERIENCE The new mines of the sixties were, in many cases, characterised by their remote situation and their output of bulk commodities such as iron ore., coal and bauxite. Infra- structure costs were particularly high and the level of capital expenditure was of previously unheard of proportions.

We have considered the following characteristics of the crust and upper mantle of the Pacific Belt: seismic wave velocit> anomalies, mechanical stress and shear deformation rate fields, heat flow and the pattern of metallogenic provinces of the Belt. It has been noted that there exist certain regularities in distribution of the above mentioned geophysical characteristics and metallogenic zones within the Belt, displayed by prevalence of the lithophile elements in the Asia-Australian part of the Belt, and of the chalcophile ones within the American part.

The properties along Ida Avenue in Mosman stand 10 m above the road on an outcrop of Sydney sandstone. Access to the houses is generally via a long steep staircase. The owner of 22 Ida Avenue identified an opportunity to use the natural strength of the rock beneath his property to excavate an underground garage and to provide access to the basement of his property via a 10 m elevator shaft from the back of the garage. This paper will describe the design and construction of this unique and innovative urban development.

The Hartley layered mafic igneous complex within the Great Dyke of Zimbabwe contains economically-recoverable quantities of platinum group metals and gold, nickel, copper and cobalt. The recoverable metals are concentrated in a thin gently-dipping stratigraphic unit - the Main Sulphide Zone. The Hartley Platinum mine, jointly owned by BHP and Delta Gold NL, is scheduled to come on stream at the end of 1996 at an initial mining rate of 2.16 million tonnes per annum and will produce approximately 150 000 oz of platinum and 3300 tonnes per annum of nickel, as well as saleable amounts of palladium (110 000 oz), rhodium (11 500 oz) and copper (2232 tonnes).
