BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance, or BMA, is AustraliaÆs largest coal miner and exporter, and is currently responsible for around a quarter of AustraliaÆs total annual coal exports. BMA and its predecessors have been part of the Queensland mining scene for around 40 years, developing world-class mines, a port, overseas markets, and an international reputation for quality and reliability. From its production base in QueenslandÆs Bowen Basin, BMA produces a broad suite of coals which are supplied to 73 customers in 24 countries. BMA was formed in June 2001 as a partnership between BHP Billiton and Mitsubishi Development Pty Ltd, under which the two companies share equal ownership and management of eight Central Queensland coal mines û Goonyella Riverside, Broadmeadow, Peak Downs, Saraji, Norwich Park, Gregory, Crinum and Blackwater û and the Hay Point coal export terminal near Mackay. This case study focuses on Peak Downs Mine, which was the second largest open cut mining operation to be developed in the northern Bowen Basin for the original CQCA Joint Venture. The first coal was mined in April 1972 and today, Peak Downs has a production capacity of over nine million tonnes of coking coal per annum. The mine is located 30 km south of Moranbah and 195 km south west of the Hay Point port facilities. Coal is mined by open cut mining methods using six draglines and two truck/shovel stripping fleets for overburden removal. Coal seams are mined using excavators and front-end loaders and 210 tonne capacity coal haulers.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Magmatic arcs are prime targets for porphyry- and epithermal-style mineral deposits, although settings within continental arcs and/or tectonically-thickened crust generally tend to be more prospective than intra-oceanic arcs in extensional settings. In this paper, we report new geochemical and geochronological data on igneous rocks of the Western Belt of the Vanuatu intra-oceanic arc. Dating of igneous hornblende (Ar-Ar) and zircon (U-Pb) from the igneous rocks place their formation in the late Eocene to Miocene. In most respects, these are typical arc igneous rocks. However, they contain inherited zircon grains with significant age populations at ca 2.8–2.5 Ga, 2.0–1.8 Ga, 1.75–1.5 Ga, 850–700 Ma, 530–430 Ma and 330–220 Ma. This inheritance signature is unlike anything recognised from the oceanic realm of the south-west Pacific, but, in general, does match the age of the major crustal blocks of the Australian continent. An exception is the significant proportion (~20 per cent) of zircons of Rodinia breakup age (~800 Ma), which previously has not been found in eastern Australia or the south-west Pacific.We propose that part of the Vanuatu arc basement comprises a ribbon of continental material rifted from northern Australia prior to, or during, the Cretaceous. The presence of ancient continental material within the Vanuatu island arc may help reconcile the relatively large thickness and low density of the crust of Vanuatu, and may enhance the prospects for significant porphyry and epithermal ore deposits in the region.CITATION:Spandler, C, Buys, J, Holm, R J and Richards, S W, 2015. In recent years substantial advances have been made in the field of geomechanics. Staff at the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) are keen to see that such advances continue and that the mining industry in Australia can take full advantage of such developments in a timely manner. WASM views mining geomechanics in its broadest sense, as being concerned with the characterisation of the physical properties and the behaviour of earth materials (soil, rock and water) and openings as mining proceeds. Aspects such as, soil and rock improvement techniques for difficult site conditions and the rock breaking processes, are also considered to be an integral part of mining geomechanics. This paper indicates the inter-relationships between the various areas within the field of geomechanics and the strong reliance of all of these areas on site specific engineering geology.

Record iron ore prices and a renaissance of infrastructure in the Pilbara have Flinders Mines poised to move from explorer/developer to an iron ore producer. The potential of the company’s Pilbara Iron Ore Project was first highlighted by the announcement of Rio Tinto’s Caliwingina North deposit to the north and the Fortescue Metals group’s Serenity deposit in the southeast. The success of Flinders Mines’ exploration has been based on incorporating landscape studies into an existing geological framework, and using this to understand the iron-rich materials that were emplaced during the Tertiary. The development of the Delta and Eagle deposit resource models highlights this process. There are three main mineralisation styles at the project; detrital iron, channel iron and bedded iron deposits. They have textural and mineralogical similarities with comparative deposits in the region. Gaining an insight into the geological processes unique to detrital iron deposits and more distal channel iron deposits has been important to understanding the geometallurgy of the mineralisation. The model sits comfortably with other regional oregenesis models and allows a contextual framework to be developed around the timing of deposition of the Fe-rich detritus and pisolitic nodules that dominate the deposits. The exploration model also allows Flinders to explore more effectively for bedded iron mineralisation developed prior to, and since the development of the Tertiary weathering landscape.

The following is a brief summary of the Bulli Colliery and its method of operation when Australian Iron and Steel Ltd. took control.Bulli Colliery is situated about a mile west of the village of Bulli and is some 10 mUes north of the Australian Iron and Steel Company's Steelworks at Port Kembla.The mine is owned by Australian Iron and Steel Limited, who purchased it in 1936 from the liquidators of Bulli Colliery and Coke Works.It is one of the oldest working coal mines in Australia, having been opened about 1858 and has worked more or less continuously since that date.The seam worked is the No. 1, or Bulli, Seam, which outcrops along the escarpment of the Illawarra Range and is generally operated by tunnels, the portal at Bulli being some 440ft. above sea level.The colliery holding is fairly extensive, but the coal seam over a large portion of the area within two miles of the outcrop has been more or less destroyed by an intrusion of basalt.At present there is no coal being worked within a distance of about 21 miles from the surface, the farthest workings being about four miles from the tunnel mouth.The existing main haulage road, for the first two miles from the portal, is not straight; it is very narrow over fairly long stretches and has many changes of grade varying from 3% in favour of the load to 13% against the load.The dumping station and screens are situated close to the portal of the haulage tunnel, and at this point the coal is loaded into railway hopper waggons, which are then hauled by rope to the top of a self-acting incline. The waggons are lowered down the incline, a distance of approximately! mile, the ruling grade being about 18 %.From the bottom of the incline, waggons are hauled by Company's steam locomotive to exchange sidings from whence they are taken by New South Wales Government Railway engine to the Company's Steelworks at Port Kembla.

It would be a good thing when reviewing the challenges to be faced by the Australian gold industry to set the backdrop and scene for them, by briefly examining the history of this vital and dynamic industry in the Australian context. Gold mining in Australia had its official beginnings in 1851 when John Lister and William Tom discovered gold at YorkyÆs Corner, later renamed Ophir by Edward Hargraves. From that first tentative beginning, the ensuing rush of prospectors into New South Wales and Victoria meant that the annual gold production in those early years surpassed that of the next 40 years. This early rate of production was only eclipsed when AustraliaÆs production was once again lifted by the discovery of gold on the other side of the continent, in Western Australia. (Figure 1). The years leading up to the First World War saw Australian production peaking once again at over 115 tonnes of gold, a production rate that would not be surpassed until 1988. This renaissance in production at the beginning of the 1980s was achieved by the application of technology. The advent of bigger trucks and shovels meant that earth-moving costs dropped dramatically. This, coupled with the highly effective and efficient carbon-in-pulp processing route, stimulated the Australian gold mining industry into a state of frenetic activity. These two innovations were the principal factors that enabled the economic exploitation of the lower grade haloes left by the æold-timersÆ around the deposits exploited at the beginning of the last century-no high finding costs here. AustraliaÆs production through the 1980s and the early part of the 1990s was largely supported by the exploitation of these haloes. As these were depleted, the aggressive exploration effort stimulated by the strong cashflows of these early oxide deposits resulted in new æblindÆ discoveries which are now emerging as the backbone of the Australian industry (Figure 2). Gold production is a major contributor to the Australian economy. In 1998/99 the Australian gold industry accounted for approximately 16 per cent of the value of all mineral exports, which in turn accounted for over 35 per cent of AustraliaÆs total exports. As such, the Australian gold industry, by itself, accounts for just under six per cent of AustraliaÆs total exports (Figure 3). Consequently, the industry is responsible for over one per cent of AustraliaÆs gross domestic product. These statistics are all the more compelling when we consider that, at the beginning of the 1980s, goldÆs contribution to exports and GDP was insignificant (Figure 4). Within the Australian resources industry, gold mines and associated infrastructure account for ten per cent of all capital expenditure (Figure 5). From an employment point of view, in 1997/1998 the industry directly employed (excluding contractors) about 7700 people, approximately 15 per cent of all those employed in the minerals industry. Just under nine per cent of the workforce in the minerals industry are female, whereas in the gold industry over 16 per cent are female.

Answers to the questions "which rocks contain diamonds?" and "which indicator minerals should diamond explorers look for?" are no longer so easily obtained, now that diamonds are known to occur in lamproites and various types of lamprophyres, as well as their traditional source of kimberlites. One way of isolating those factors (host-rock"geochemistry, geographical or tectonic location, xenolith minerals, etc.) which are most critical in determining the diamond potential of a given pipe, is a detailed and critical re-examination of the huge volumes of accumulated data on kimberlites, lamproites and related rocks. A large analytical database to this end has been set up on an Apple Macintosh II microcomputer using the quasi-relational database management system 4th Dimension. Currently, it contains data for up to 90 major and trace elements, isotopic ratios and contained mineral compositions for some 4,000 rock specimens from all over the world. Many experiences in setting up this database are probably relevant to other geologists setting up their own systems: they include determining the relationships between data items; the advantages of codes over free text in representing categorical variables such as rock types; the need for rigorous error trapping and data validation; and the problem of missing data values and ambiguities thereof. The working system is now being used in a rigorous statistical assessment of the criteria which distinguish diamondiferous from non-diamondiferous rocks.

Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd is currently developing the 'Super Pit' gold mine in the mining area known as the Golden Mile adjacent to the city of KalgoorlieBoulder, Western Australia. The presence of numerous abandoned mine workings and complex structural geology has required considerable geotechnical input into the determination of the optimum pit slope geometries for both interim and ultimate pit slopes. Slope design is based on detailed site investigation and stability analysis which is balanced with historical operational experience. This paper discusses the process of determining the optimum pit slope angles for each of the stages of the west wall of the 'Super Pit'. The risks associated with slope instability are discussed for each stage.

The Phase I electrowinning system at KCGM's Fimiston Operation utilised the well proven technology of electrowinning precious metal values onto steel wool followed by calcining and direct smelting to bullion. The above process, while reliable and successful, was to some extent labour intensive. The Williams Mine in Ontario, Canada had published conditions under which precious metal values are electrowon onto woven stainless steel and directly removed using high pressure sprays. The current paper describes the testwork which was carried out to check the applicability of the Williams criteria to KCGM eluates arising from the elution of highly loaded carbon from the calcine circuit and lowly loaded carbon from the float tails circuit. Information is also given on the commissioning and operational experience which occurred.

At the mining industry, there are several uncertainties that may affect the mobile mining equipment fleet sizing and usage, such as commodity supply and demand, which impacts the mineral price, environmental licenses to allow operations and strategic decisions made by the own mining company. Due to that, it may happen to acquire a mobile mining equipment for a specific site and before it finishes the entire forecasted life cycle, the machine gets idle on that operation and a decision must be made regarding this matter. On large mining companies with several sites, equipment transfer provides a good solution to solve this issue and at the same time it provides operational flexibility and allows to use the equipment until the initially planned working hours. This article presents a method to compare technically and financially whether it’s more feasible to transfer a used equipment or to buy a new one. In other words, we will compare a brand-new machine versus a used one in terms of safety, net present value (NPV) considering both capital expenditures (CAPEX) and operational expenditures (OPEX), technological obsolescence, risks, equipment maintenance reliability and lead times. Although it’s not the main purpose of the paper, it will also be briefly discussed the importance of having a considerable amount of backup equipment to handle low likelihood and high consequence risks that may materialise. This backup equipment portfolio is particularly important to avoid loss of sales and profits in case the production plan changes and it demands further equipment than initially planned to cope with the forecasted production.

This paper studies the grinding behaviour of vanadium-titanium magnetite concentrate in a ball mill. The grinding kinetics, surface morphology, lattice distortion, wettability and moisture capacity were analysed. Grinding kinetics equation was established based on population balances model with the size distribution data from a laser diffraction technique. The SEM photos of the ground concentrate showed that the surface gets rough with increasing grind time. Agglomeration of fine particles was enhanced when the grinding time reached 30 minutes. X-ray diffraction results showed that a loss in crystalline occurred with increasing the grinding time. The peaks of the X-ray diffraction patterns are significantly broadened with increasing grinding time. Wettability, characterised by contact angle between the material and water, improved due to the fact that the surface roughness increased with increasing grinding time. Moisture capacity of concentrate ascends abruptly in the first three minutes and then changed slowly with increasing grinding time. The water transfer coefficient in the particles increased rapidly in the first six minutes and then decreased quickly until grinding time reached 12 minutes.CITATION:Zhang, R, Lv, X, Bai, C, Xu, J and Zhang, S, 2013. Electro slag remelting (ESR) is one of the methods used to produce high-cleanliness steel. In the ESR method, the product steel electrode is immersed in flux, and the electrode is melted by the Joule heat of the flux generated by high current. CaF2-based melts are mainly used as fluxes, but the electrical conductivity of CaF2-based melts varies widely among researchers and measurement methods. Therefore, this experiment aims to measure the electrical conductivity of CaF2-based melts based on the van der Pauw-Ohta method, which does not require the cell constant that is a fundamental error factor in electrical conductivity measurement at high temperatures. The measurement temperature was set at 1450–1600°C, and dehydrated Ar flowed through the furnace at 200 mL/min. Electrodes were fabricated by Pt-30mass per cent Rh alloy, and the electrodes were connected to an impedance analyser using a four-terminal probe. The electrodes were immersed in the melt, and the impedance and phase angle were measured by AC frequency sweep (50 Hz to 200 kHz). The electrical conductivity was then calculated by utilising the impedance’s real part values when the impedance’s imaginary component was zero. The electrical conductivity showed a positive temperature dependence. The electrical conductivity of 60(CaO⋅Al2O3)-40CaF2 melt increased with increasing temperature but was found to be roughly one-third of those of the previous studies. In the conductivity measurement of 60(CaO⋅Al2O3)-40CaF2 melt, the AC frequency with a phase angle of 0° was found to be different depending on the temperature and immersion depth. By sweeping the frequency, the impedance at the phase angle of 0° can be obtained, which enables us to measure the electrical conductivity more accurately.

A ground support system is a combination of individual reinforcement and surface support elements that work together to retain and contain the rock mass. The various elements are subjected to external loads and to interactive loading between individual ground support system components. This paper focuses on the challenges in determining the capacity and behaviour of mesh, recognizing that installed mesh can be subjected to several loading mechanisms. Field observations from underground hard rock mines demonstrate that there are multiple types of damage and modes of failure of mesh. However, these are difficult to reproduce in a laboratory environment. A critical review has shown that existing mesh laboratory testing rigs reproduce very limited loading conditions that may not be representative of underground conditions. This has significant implications in quantifying and extrapolating the performance of mesh to ground conditions. CITATION:Hadjigeorgiou, J and Stacey, T R, 2018. Roadheaders were introduced to mining and tunnelling in the early-1960s. Since this period their main field of application has been for roadway drivages in coal mines and for mineral production, for instance in coal, rocksalt, potash and gypsum mines. Their main field of application in tunnelling is in softer and partly friable rock formations, a suitable area for non-blasting excavation. However, in longer tunnel sections excavators with high ripping forces have replaced roadheaders in many situations. The main arguments against roadheaders have been and still are:a sharp increase in excavation cost with increasing rock strength and increasing abrasivity; and greater risks in conditions which have not been, or could not be, investigated to a sufficient extent. These arguments have, to a great extent, restricted practical roadheader application in production mining and in a lot of æstandardÆ tunnel projects. To address these limitations, factors which could make roadheaders attractive for such conditions and could overcome existing technological difficulties have been investigated. Extension of the economic field of application in hard rock was found to be the most important and the most effective step forward.

In a previous study, various pyrite depressants were examined to improve the flotation performance of a copper-sulfide ore. Optimal results from this study were used to examine the effect of elevation on recovery and grade. Tests were conducted at elevations of 3350, 1735, 610 and -760 metres, consisted of five repetitive experiments for statistical analysis, and were performed both with and without airflow control. Tests were also performed in a glove box at Montana Tech to mimic the pressure conditions. Results indicate that both recovery and grade are dependent on pressure via bubble size and airflow suggesting that pressurised flotation cells should be considered for operations, particularly those at high elevation. Economics are extremely favourable for implementation because ensuing capital expenses are inconsequential with minimal time for return-on-investment.

A resource estimate uses data obtained by sampling an orebody. An example is described in which a random drilling pattern did not provide a representative set of assays, and the estimated resource was significantly less than the mine production. It is believed that a better estimate would have been made if the exploration holes had been drilled on a regular grid.

Zinc-bearing materials containing chlorides and fluorides of alkali metals, such as electric arc furnace dusts, Waelz oxides, galvanising ashes, brass foundry and converter fumes are marginally attractive, both technically and economically, for processing by the Imperial Smelting Process or in a conventional zinc sulphate electrolytic plant. The EZINEX« Process allows the recovery of high purity zinc in cathode form from these materials, together with regeneration of the leach liquor. The process is based on a new electrochemical system which depolarises the anode reaction with reduction of the cell voltage, compared with the traditional sulphate electrolysis method. The electrolyte, based on a chloroammino complex, permits the recovery of other valuable metals present in the zinc bearing materials such as lead, copper and silver. These are recovered as a metallic cement, consequently improving the economics of the process.

The importance of using disc cutters for rock excavation is reflected by their wide application in hard rock cutting machines such as tunnel boring machines and raise borers. The forces involved in the cutting process are those due mainly to thrust and rolling forces and are greater than that required by cutting picks. An interesting feature of cutting with discs is the formation of surface crushing, surface and sub-surface chipping and primary crack formation. Experimental, as well as analytical, work has been carried out to determine the optimum spacing between the disc cutters to control primary crack orientation. Wedge bit indenters were used to simulate disc cutters. The paper concludes by proposing a new approach to rock excavation by hybrid cutting based on controlling the primary crack Orientation.

Factors influencing Cost, systems available for transporting minerals, particularly on land, and methods used for comparing costs are reviewed. A case study presents comparative costs graphically for coal haulage, assumed in Queensland, by 31-6" gauge rail, belt conveyor, 120 ton road train, slurry pipeline, and transmission of electrical energy by transmission line. The effect on comparative results of alternative methods of including initial capital and capital replacement costs is considered and approximate break-even points between systems, bearing in mind the assumptions taken, are discussed.

Recent tailings dam failures have heightened public awareness of the hazard posed by storage facilities for mining waste, illustrating the need for a more critical examination of tailings dam breach mechanisms and the potential mobility of liquefied tailings. Knowledge from tailings dam breach studies will help improve safety and risk management through more accurate inundation maps, dam consequence classifications and emergency preparedness plans. Tailings dams differ from conventional water retaining dams, although dam breach relationships used in practice rely heavily on relationships derived for breach processes from the latter. Physical modelling offers a controlled environment to advance the understanding of tailings dam breach processes, thereby allowing for modelling of simple geometry and boundary conditions to test hypotheses. The performed experiments investigate prototypical tailings dam configurations and material behaviour, with the objective of validating numerical models that will enable practitioners to better assess and mitigate tailings flows resulting from tailings dam failures. Research conducted in the Queen’s University Landslide Flume at the Coastal Engineering Laboratory has investigated the breaching of 1 m high dams with tailings geometry by overtopping initiated by a v-notch incised in the dam crest. This paper presents the initial results of the next stage of this research comparing the outflow hydrograph following loss of containment caused by shear failure to overtopping initiated by notch flow. The two dam experiments presented are constructed with similar dam and reservoir geometries allowing for a direct comparison of the effect on the outflow hydrograph of each failure event. Preliminary outcomes suggest that although both dam failure events are triggered from separate mechanisms their geometries allow for similar values of Q_peak to be reached. Future work is currently planned to expand the shear test series to explore the influence of failure mechanism on the outflow hydrograph.
