The minerals industry has been given an opportunity to grow and continue to advance again in an environment where there is the potential to reap big rewards for efficiency improvements due to buoyant metal prices and the growing demand of markets in Asia. Improving efficiency may also provide a better return compared to risks of expansions and bringing new projects online due to limited human and financial capital.An opportunity for improvement presents itself in the area of mine-mill reconciliation, which entails the quantification of the variance between measurement points along the mining value chain. Reconciliation factors are calculated from the variance between respective sections within the mining sequence. These factors are commonly used as key performance indicators to provide a check on the performance of the operations. Over parts of the mining value chain, there is a fair understanding of the reconciliation between the Resource and Reserve estimates and the measured metallurgical plant inputs and product outputs through understanding of the mine-mill interface. The quality of reconciliation data gathered across the mine and plant is generally not well established due to practices employed in generating the data. The reconciliation variances are often a function of data accuracy and quality used in the comparison. In general, the sources and magnitude of measurement and sampling errors and their impact on reconciliation are not that well understood. Examples of the current practices of mass measurement, sampling, sample preparation, chemical analysis and quality assurance for broken ore and across the metallurgical process stream are considered. Guidelines are given for those reconciliation elements that are identified as requiring a high degree of confidence for Mineral Resource/Reserve and metal accounting reporting. In recent years there has been a great deal of interest in ways to optimise the performance of mineral processing plants. This paper describes a methodology developed for optimisation of autogenous and semiautogenous mills. The methodology involves plant sampling, batch testing, modelling, computer simulation, control strategy evaluation and implementation. The models have been tested in plant operations to verify the research findings and predictions. Two example applications of this approach to plant optimisation are presented. Benefits reported in these two examples are in the range of four - eight per cent increase in size reduction efficiency.

As we strive for a sustainable and resilient future, repurposing assets has become a top priority. In Australia alone, we have a significant number of mineral projects in the pipeline, extensive existing operations, and over 50 000 legacy sites. Collectively, this presents a unique opportunity to be a world leader in mine rehabilitation. Complex stakeholder landscapes, inflexible policies, aged regulatory frameworks, technical uncertainties and increasing liabilities are all barriers hindering effective transition of legacy assets. The impetus for change is further catalysed by shifting consumer preferences, workforces in flux and regional Australians questioning what the transition means for their local community. We need innovative approaches to take a leading role in the industry and support global efforts more broadly. Co-designing an ambitious, shared vision spanning projects, operations and legacy assets with all key parties is a fundamental step to unlock and realise maximum societal, environmental, economic and reputational value. Serious play and gamification can further enhance this visioning process.

Mr. Gillie and Mr. Harris have given us a wealth of information and food for thought on the vital subject of information and food fo rthought on the vital subject of reducing costs and mention considerable saving in some of the larger items. There are a number of points on which I would like further information, but I will confine my remarks to a relatively small saving which is of particular interest in view of another paper to be presented this afternoon.Mention is made of a 50 per cent reduction in the amount of zinc used in the precipitation of gold slime from the pregnant solution. Would Mr. Harris enlarge on the methods by which they obtained this reduction; and could he give an actual figure of zinc consumption either by ton of ore treated or per ounce of bullion recovered.AuthorsWe consider the reduction of zinc is due to improved clarification of the pregnant solutions. The sand clarifiers used prior to the installation of the 50 ft. -thickener were not satisfactory due mainly to the blending of the hessian and matting under the sand. Under these conditions the leaf clarifiers were fed with overflow solution from the clarifiers and were overloaded in consequence. The addition of Calgon has also been beneficial.The present consumption of zinc per ton of solution treated is 088 lb. per ton.A. L. Mr. P. F. THOMPSON said this matter was one of very great importance to producers of lead. His association with the matter was that he happened to be the Institute representative on the Committee of the Standards Association of Australia charged with formulating a standard for chemical lead, that is, lead used in technical chemistry for acid chambers and the like. The British standard had this test incorporated in it, but those on the committee felt that it should not be included in the specification. The main objection was that in an accelerated corrosion test one was endeavouring to do in a few seconds what in natural conditions would take years; and it was now being recognised that such tests were of little value in assessing the corrosive properties of a metal.The flash point test was carried out with boiling hot strong sulphuric acid; but no chemical manufacturer would be likely to use such in contact with lead. There were many factors such as the formation of steam, the chemical reduction of sulphuric acid, the evolution of hydrogen, the catalytic effect of the surface lead, affecting this test, other than the presence of the segregated impurities upon which this test throws the onus of the whole imperfection of the lead. Mr. Russell had shown that lead which had stood the test of time often gave a low flash point. They were endeavouring to find rapid methods of estimating minute amounts of the more important impurities, which would eliminate the labour and expense of a full analysis.Mr. H. St. J. The emergence of affordable, portable and versatile wireless devices has enabled a new frontier in mine safety equipment. Existing solutions provide methods for tracking personnel and assets in underground mines but are not designed to optimally integrate into existing and emerging systems. Mine management are often required to coordinate primarily independent emergency, personal protective equipment (PPE), tracking and collision avoidance systems from multiple vendors. These systems involve a variety of wireless technologies that require separate integration projects that discourage adopting new services and policies.

About 3km2 of the central Luise Caldera, in which the Lihir orebody is located, is geothermally active wit.lj gas seeps and fumaroles, and in some areas, a water table at boiling point.The proposed mine, adjacent to Luise Harbor, will be excavated to more than 200m below sea level and will extend into the geothermal system to depths at which current rock temperatures are 170¦C.

The grinding circuit at PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT) – Batu Hijau mine consists of two SABC (semi-autogenous milling, ball milling, pebble crushing) trains, including four 20'?×?33'6? ball mills that have been lined with steel liners since the commissioning of the plant in 1999. During 2011 and 2012 an industrial trial was conducted to evaluate Poly-Met liners (a combination of rubber and steel liners). These new liners were installed in two of the ball mills (ball mills 1 and 2) and operated in parallel with ball mills 3 and 4 with steel liners.The objective of the trial was to compare the plant performance with the Poly-Met and steel ball?mill liners with regards to wear life, mill throughput, grind size and total unit costs. The trial was conducted over the entire life of the liners. The evaluation methodology implemented consisted of frequent spot sampling around the ball mill circuits, complete surveys/audits in both ball mills, and detailed analysis of process data. "BHP Billiton West Australian Iron Ore (WAIO) conducts an extensive geometallurgy program for its iron ore deposits in the Pilbara with the focus on determining the lump yield (the mass percentage of >6.3 mm rocks) and the lump and fines grade for iron ore products. The geometallurgy program provides accurate information to design engineers and technical marketing teams on the performance of different iron ore mineralogies for future deposits. Additionally geometallurgy results are being used to guide short-term production planning with their introduction into short-term geology models and grade control models. The data that underpins this knowledge is from dedicated geometallurgical programs, drilled using PQ (~83 mm) holes. These holes are crushed by intervals that are based on geological definition which provides an indicative lump yield and lump and fines grade. The lump is then subjected to standard dropping and tumbling test stages to produce a simulated lump and fines product. In the past, quality assurance, quality control holes were drilled using HQ (~64 mm) holes for geochemistry purposes. These holes were crushed to provide an indicative lump yield and lump and fines grade and then 100 per cent is sent for assay (with no dropping and tumbling). Utilising data from HQ holes can significantly increase the indicative geometallurgical data available. This paper compares the geometallurgical results from both PQ and HQ holes from a range of bedded iron deposits (Brockman and Marra Mamba). Planning for a circular economy allows for previously untapped market opportunities to be explored, resulting in new, innovative revenue generating opportunities, while also reducing environmental impacts. In particular, rare earth elements (REE) are in rising demand as they are key components of over 200 products across a wide range of applications (Xie et al, 2023) including renewable energy technologies. There is a geographical disparity in deposits, with China being the top producer, generating 70 per cent of global production in 2022 (Laboure, 2023). This single dominating source has created supply chain concentration and hence supply risks for other nations, providing a driver for finding alternative sources, such as mine-influenced water (MIW) and tailings. In this study, Isle presents a robust due diligence methodology for undertaking a global horizon scan into REE recovery technology, for a large mining company, from tailings decant water on a specific site. Previous studies of the tailings decant water at this site had shown potentially significant concentrations of both heavy and light REE, but challenges such as high flow, very low pH and high concentrations of iron had previously made recovery unfeasible. Due to these challenges, the horizon scan focused on technologies that had the potential for selective recovery, despite the challenges with water quality, and considered a range of Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs). This included an adsorption-based process that has the potential to selectively separate individual REE, and a polymer based selective flocculation technology.

With the increasing rate of tailing production worldwide there is a growing concern about the hazards of tailings storage facilities (TSF). Past and current mining, processing and waste disposal strategies that focus on the extraction of the valuable minerals, and an economic assessment only, are no longer suitable. Social implications and environmental legacies must be included for effective evaluation. This is possible by using an integrated assessment framework to evaluate more alternatives, including the production of additional saleable and benign streams, alternative tailings treatment and disposal as well as options for reuse, recycling and preprocessing of existing tailings. Tailings are not viewed as a final waste product but as part of the resource. From the sustainability perspective the models developed in integrated research programs will contribute to more effective methods for assessing different scenarios and potential processes and lead to better environmental management, increased production of benign tailings and improved efficiency of water and energy use and thus more responsible resource stewardship of the ore resource.This paper presents preliminary results from a multiyear research program on integrated tailings management at the Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI), The University of Queensland, called ‘Designer Tailings’. The project involves the gathering of experimental and observational information on tailings biogeochemical processes to design and modify the range of activities within mineral processing plants, upstream characterisation ore and gangue, and downstream tailings management for desired tailings properties and outcomes. Every diesel engine emits approximately 100 million nano diesel particles (nDP) per cubic centimetre of raw exhaust. Each nDP has a diameter of between 50 and 70 nano metres or 1/100th the size of red blood cells (diameter of between 6 and 8 microns). When inhaled, some nDP pass through the lungs and penetrate all body tissue [1]. Europe and North America have recognised and are addressing the long term health problems posed by nano diesel particulate matter (nDPM) across their societies [2.3]. Australia has been slow to recognise the issue, at both a societal and mining industry level. There are chronic health effects for every underground miner and serious legal issues for mining companies with increasingly stringent Occupational Health and Safety legislation being implemented at a state level across Australia. This paper will review progress within Australian society and more particularly the underground hard rock mining industry, particularly in Western Australia (WA).

This paper describes the ventilation analyses performed for the access tunnels at the New Level Mine project (NLMP) at CodelcoÆs El Teniente operation outside of Rancagua, Chile. This new mine is anticipated to reach a final production of between 137 and 180 kt/d. Production from the NLMP is scheduled to start in the year 2017. The main access tunnels (MAT) are approximately 9 km in length, with one for personnel and supply access and the second one for ore extraction through a conveyor system. These two tunnels are a critical component of the initial stage 1 development and will be constructed independently of the existing mine workings. The tunnels were originally designed to be constructed with two tunnel boring machines. However, later analyses changed the construction approach to a conventional drill and blast technique. Because the design included two mid-tunnel ramp-to-surface connections, conventional mining methods would allow for development of the tunnels with multiple working faces to achieve a more rapid schedule. This paper presents the initial baseline considered for the ventilation design and the optimisation methodology applied by Codelco to minimise the airflow and pressure requirements of the ventilation system. This paper deals with the current situation in the mining industry in Poland. An overview of typical transport systems working in the different branches of mining is provided. The transport systems currently used in lignite mining, particularly in the Belchat=w mine û the largest brown coal mine in Poland, and those operating in copper mines are described in detail. New designs of belt conveyors used in underground hard coal and copper mining are presented.

In mid-1998 Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB introduced the first member of a new family of drill rigs. This new family, Rocket Boomer L1C/L2C/L3C, is based on modern computer technology and also on what is characterised as information technology. The design of the drill rigs are modularised both in hardware as in the software. This means that the functionality of the drill rigs is upgradable step by step. Added upon the basic drill rig functions are the new options as ABC Regular (known also as Contour Control), ABC Total, drillplan generator and communication products. The main objectives of these functions are to facilitate real quality drilling.

In both the U.S.A. and Canada regulations concerning the reporting on mineral resources and especially ore reserves have been established. The regulations are virtually identical for the two countries with the main exceptions being who is franchised to write the report and how the various reserve categories may be used in reports to the public. Both countries divide ore reserves into "proven", "probable" and "inferred" categories. "Proven" reserves are those for material for which tonnage is computed from dimensions revealed in outcrops, trenches, underground workings or drill holes and for which the grade is composed from the results of adequate sampling. "Probable" reserves are those which are less well defined than "proven" while "inferred" reserves are generally those which may exist through geological and geophysical interpretation. The AusIMM/AMIC draft guidelines as proposed for use in Australia define more rigidly the ore reserve categories into "proved" and "probable" terms, which can only be applied following a full and favourable analysis of economic, mining, metallurgical, marketing and sociopolitical factors. If the ore reserves are not supported by this analysis they are placed into a "resource" category. Proper application of this proposed Australian model could prove useful when dealing with grass-root prospects or mining properties in the pre-feasibility stage. Combined with competent reporting, use of the proposed guidelines should ensure standardised and more verifiable analysis/valuation of a company's mineral assets.

The Iluka Resources Ltd Jacinth-Ambrosia heavy mineral sand mine (South Australia) is located in an undisturbed semi-arid landscape consisting of sparse trees, shrubs and grasses. The soil interspaces are covered with biocrusts, a living soil cover also found worldwide in arid regions. Biocrusts are composed of lichens, cyanobacteria, algae, mosses, liverworts, fungi and bacteria, and live on and within the first few millimetres of the soil surface. Biocrust organisms bind soil particles, sequester carbon and many fix atmospheric nitrogen making them important structural and functional components of ecosystems. Despite their important role in ecological processes, biocrusts are susceptible to disturbance; nevertheless they can recover provided sufficient inoculum is present. Cyanobacteria are the early colonisers and they capture atmospheric and landscape resources and establish conditions that subsequent successional seres can capitalise on. Research conducted in countries including China, Spain and South Africa has been focused on methods to either encourage rapid regeneration of cyanobacterial remnants or to introduce new material from cultured cyanobacteria. We have been investigating the extent and diversity of biocrusts across the 4500 ha mine lease and their potential to improve mining rehabilitation outcomes. Approximately 46 per cent of the soil surfaces are colonised with biocrusts and 33 taxa have been identified. Laboratory experiments were designed to mimic massive soil disturbance and treated with a range of water qualities. Within 22 days, treatments irrigated with fresh water were colonised by new cyanobacterial filaments with a mean surface coverage of 65 per cent. Secondary tests revealed that differences in the photosynthetic yield of the crust were dependent on the salinity levels of the irrigation water used. In 2011 this program is expanding from the laboratory into field scale trials designed to assess both the potential and practicalities of up scaling these techniques to provide crushed biocrusts and cyanobacterial bio-inoculum for use in mine rehabilitation.

Unprecedented political, economic, and social change throughout the world will have an increasingly profound effect on the dynamics of the world's mining industry. Analysis of the early financial trends in this development (statistics on exploration expenditure, and investment flows) gives some insight into the magnitude of structural change and its implications for established mining economics and companies.Increasing confidence in the stability of many third world and developing countries is attracting exploration and investment capital that had previously been largely directed to established mining economies in North America, Australia, Europe and Southern Africa. Some of the projects requiring capital and technology in the CIS, Africa and Latin America are technically very attractive. The end of the 'cold war' and the influence of the IMF is gradually changing their risk profile for mining investment.

"Brazil is the sixth worldwide producer of aluminum and Votorantim (Metals) has been operating three bauxite open pit mines in a particular way of working. In those the deposits occur on the top of hills, under forest, coffee, eucalyptus plantation or pasture area.The deposits are not large and normally mining takes an average of two months to be completed before starting the rehabilitation process, which demands a good strategy in mining planning to achieve the production goals.The benefit function developed to select feasible areas uses, beyond production costs, fees from the owner by using their area and rehabilitation cost. Both are based on land use and occupation field survey data. In this process each area with different land use receives a specific rehabilitation cost as input into a block model.Once the selection is made the mining schedule begins, taking into consideration the following premise: the orebody needs to be mined in a short period of time because during this time, the surface owners receive from Votorantim a compensation based on the expected profits from their plantation or pasture, plus royalties related to the ore amount existing in their area.Not all operations have waste dumps. Waste is pushed down by bulldozers to the lower part of the ore border. After loading and transporting ore, the waste is handled back to the mined area to fit the topography. With this step concluded, the mined area is directed to the environmental team who, alongside university partners, develop land reclamation to return them to their owners, eg in 2011, 110 ha were rehabilitated of which 29 per cent is native forest.Votorantim closes many mined areas a year and currently the entire mine planning considers this particular way of operation, making profit with minimum interference with the community and the environment.CITATION:Artioli, P, Kato, M S, Romanel, A and Piermatei, M P, 2012. In designing climate exposed soil structures such as caps and covers over mine waste it is necessary to include the wetting and drying influences of the local climate in order to accurately predict the net water, vapour and oxygen fluxes across the ground surface and through the base of the covers. The most advanced evaporative flux modelling tools currently available to practitioners have been limited to rigorous one-dimensional models (ie SoilCover) or semi-empirical two-dimensional models (ie Hydrus-2D). It is common practice to use the rigorous one-dimensional evaporative flux model results to develop a surface boundary function that can then be applied within a saturated/unsaturated two-dimensional model. However, this is not an ideal situation and results in a further approximation of the real system being modelled. This paper will highlight the use of a new modelling tool, VADOSE/W, which brings existing, rigorously formulated evaporative flux theory into the familiar setting of a two-dimensional model. The model is enhanced for simultaneous two-dimensional oxygen gas transport analysis, which has direct application in the mine waste industry. A key focus of the paper will be addressing the limitations of one-dimensional analysis for cover systems on sloping and hummocky terrain.
