The nickel ores mined in New Caledonia for one century are mainly silicate ores. These ores are nickel enriched saprolites, formed by partial weathering of peridotites (predominantly harzburgites and some dunites), serpentinised to varying degrees. Saprolites constitute the lower horizon of lateritic soils, sometimes up to 100 metres thick, developed on peneplains now greatly modified by erosion. Saprolites are generally overlain by laterites, a more weathered horizon, where the main components are iron oxy-hydroxides with a low nickel grade. The structure of saprolites depends essentially on the serpentine content of peridotites and, on the other hand, serpentine minerals may have a high nickel content and, so, represent important nickel bearing minerals in silicate ores. Two types of serpentines can be found in nickel ores from New Caledonia: ò primary serpentines, formed by hydration of olivine at temperatures below 400¦C, during overthrusting of peridotites in late-Eocene (Paris, Andreieff and Coudray, 1979), are generally very abundant; ò secondary nickeliferous serpentines, associated with other sheet silicates in garnierites, are now relatively scarce but garnierites were selectively mined one century ago, because of their high nickel grade.

While objective selection and assessments are an accepted part of employing managers and other staff, they have had only a limited place when selecting mineworkers in Australia. Wambo Mining Corporation has used occupational testing as part of its recruitment process since 1994. For managers and staff in particular, it is considered this has contributed significantly to a 95 % fit of those appointees. In 1997 when Wambo undertook development of a new "on site" subsidiary underground mine called Wollemi Services, they wanted to select the most appropriate people in terms of skill and on the job performance. To achieve this they reviewed and improved their recruitment processes to facilitate selection and transfer of an initial intake of almost 50 staff and mineworkers.One of the issues for Human Resource Management was to provide an environment where employees could let go of previously held (but not necessarily individually believed) entrenched views about individual performance and assessment. It needed to be emphasised that performance could be objectively and fairly assessed. More importantly, the performance being assessed was the application of skills and that new skills could be learnt and individuals could choose to change Behaviour.

A critical step in open cut coal mining is clean removal of the overburden. This is usually achieved by drilling, blasting and digging. A key part of this process being successful is to stop drilling at the correct blast ‘stand-off distance’. The stand-off distance is the distance between the base of the drilled blasthole and the top of the coal horizon to be mined. Having this correct provides a protective cap of rock above the coal horizon so that the blast will fracture all the overburden without damaging the coal horizon or mixing it with the overburden. Drilling beyond the correct stand-off distance causes the blast to continue into the coal horizon, damaging it and mixing it with the overburden, leading to significant losses of coal product. Conversely, drilling short of the correct stand-off distance results in additional work to remove the intact overburden.

It is anticipated that many future uranium mines in Australia will be using the in situ leaching mining process. It is fair to say that close to one third of uranium production will be generated by this method, whilst the other two thirds will fall on the uranium generated from hard rock mining and other mining methods, such as traditional open cut mining. For other types of deposits the in situ leaching mining method will remain the best technological, commercial and environmental alternative. It is important to identify and prevent all risks involved in uranium mining. The expertise in this subject is limited. Over the years there was only one mine using the in situ leaching process for uranium extraction in Australia. Computer simulation of propagation of leachate during and after the uranium in situ leaching is a crucial factor, not only for addressing the environmental concerns, but also for the most efficient recovery of the deposit. The decontamination can be modelled for a period of up to 100 years, with the acid neutralisation forecast for a period of up to 400 years. The results of the modelling are paramount for definition of the reserves, efficiency of the mining method and the environmental impact statement. The accuracy of the hydrogeological modelling and carefully selected environmental management program enables a mining company to quantify and minimise the impact of the mining activities on the regional aquifer and to prevent environmental disasters. In the study, the completed hydrogeological model allowed the client, the authorities and the community to make an informed decision about the environmental impact of the in situ leaching of uranium. In particular, the model proved that neither during the mining, nor during the neutralisation the toxic elements would interact with the local catchment area.

During the last decades, maintenance has changed from an ordinary repair activity to a complex function that plays an essential role contributing for the companyÆs results. The increasing level of complexity of modern equipment motivates maintenance personnel to improve both techniques, and management systems, in order to face the new challenges. Managing properly those modern means of production requires knowledge of methods and planning systems, controlling and performing maintenance tasks, in such a way that two objectives are achieved at the same time: system efficiency and cost-effectiveness. This paper shows CVRDÆs experience on evolving and implementing a model to plan and manage maintenance activities in order to achieve a higher level of performance on its operations.

Metallurgists frequently use a small number of large samples to characterise expected mill performance, with the a priori assumption that these few samples are representative of the entire deposit. Geometallurgical sampling is becoming more prevalent as a way to use many smaller samples to indicate the expected recovery as part of the Mineral Resource or Ore Reserve estimation.The evaluation of magnetite deposits involves specialised approaches to sample preparation, sample analysis and resource estimation. The sampling protocol for magnetite deposits will typically include the use of Davis Tube analysis. The Davis Tube is a mini-pilot plant that is used for determining the mass magnetic recovery from a small amount of sample ground to a specific size. The magnetic concentrate may then be analysed and together with the mass magnetic recovery, may be used to simulate the expected mill recovery. The magnetite sampling protocol is specific to each deposit, and is typically designed around a specific metallurgical flow sheet.During resource modelling, the mass magnetic recoveries and concentrate grades may be estimated directly or assigned to a block model using regressions with other chemical constituents. For estimation, the concentrate grades are weighted to account for the different mass magnetic recoveries of each sample and the impact of these differences on the concentrate estimates.

One of the major impacts of using modern mechanised systems of mining is the production of large amounts of extraneous dirt intermixed with the Run of Mine output. The paper out- lines a proposed system of utilizing liquid tailings from coal mines to replace imported cementitious materials used in ground control and various other safety measures. A geotech- nical and cost assessment of the proposed system are also included. The paper concludes that it is possible to utilize processed tailings to cost effectively replace imported packing material for ground control.

In the past many coal mining projects commenced without any consideration being given to eventual site rehabilitation. Now that site rehabilitation is assuming greater importance with changing community expectations, and standards are becoming less negotiable, it cannot be ignored in either the development of mine working plans or economic models. The "unspecified" rehabilitation measures associated with many existing projects will be the subject of debate for some time to come yet. It would be wise to plan for the future. Once an agreeed standard of rehabilitation is accepted, good management involves considering practices which will facilitate eventual rehabilitation at least cost. Without planning for rehabilitation, many mines have adopted practices which are likely to result in very expensive rehabilitation measures and impact significantly on the overall profitability of the ventures. With adequate planning, procedures can be developed which achieve the same short term goals without significantly effecting cash flow but with very significant impacts on the final rehabilitation cost. This paper looks at the disposal of tailings and overburden in the coal mining process. The industry has in the past had an obvious preference for the "perceived" cheaper procedures for waste management such as wet disposal of tailings and high dumping of overburden. There are alternatives. The paper discusses the principles which should be incorporated into tailings and overburden disposal systems and identifies viable alternatives.

A new plant for grinding limestone was built at the Risdon Works of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited to meet increasing process demands expected to reach 150 tonne/day of ground limestone. Plant specifications included open- circuit wet grinding, a single ball mill, a feed sizing of minus 6 Tyler mesh, a product sizing of 100 per cent minus 200 and 95 per cent minus 325 Tyler mesh and for the plant to be unmanned during normal running. Main features of plant and equipment are described; grinding performances given, as well as operating experience since commission- ing of the plant in March, 1976.

The definition of the working sections that will be used in a mine is usually initially made in the field by the geologist supervising the drilling program. These initial definitions are often made on the basis of rules of thumb such as æcoal less than 30 cm thick cannot be mined separatelyÆ; æpartings more than 30 cm thick will be mined separatelyÆ; and æif a coal seam is less than 50 cm thick and the parting above or below is thicker than the coal, the coal will be wastedÆ. These decisions are also often made based on the requirement for a minimum sample mass for analysis, and the desire to collect data at the minimum resolution to conserve the exploration budget.In many cases the geological models based on this data are produced at a resolution that is inadequate to allow the mining engineer to produce a mine plan that will maximise project value. This problem is generally unrecognised.Where data is collected to a higher level of resolution the subsequent processes employed in the production of geological models and mine plans often discards the inherent value that is hidden in this data. Again this problem is generally unrecognised.This paper highlights this problem and then presents a methodology that ensures that the optimal working section is selected and compares the outcomes of applying this methodology versus adherence to the usual rules of thumb.

Diamond drilling is a relatively new commodity in terms of drilling. The first known diamond drilling activities were carried out in the Swiss Alps around 1863 when the Swiss engineer M Leschot designed and made a tube with a diamond set face which was used in probing ahead drilling for the Mont Cenis tunnel (Figure 1). Craelius AB which today is a part of the Atlas Copco Group was formed in 1886. The name Craelius is a family name and the founder of the company was Per Anton Craelius (Figure 2). He went to the United States to study this new technology using diamonds to extract core samples and when he returned to Sweden designed his first diamond drilling machine. It was a man-powered drill needing a crew of six men, two to crank the unit, one to feed, two to power the flush pump and a foreman (Figure 3). As time passed through research and development, the original design was improved and manpower was substituted for steam engines and later combustion engines or electric motors (Figure 4). During the 1930s the drills radically changed designs and took the form of the short stroke drills which to a certain extent are still in use today. The original design of these drills have been refined during the years, hydraulic chucks, gear boxes and other improvements have been added.

"Investors and other stakeholders assessing the risk, opportunity and relative value associated with a resource project need to appreciate the project in its correct context. Errors, omissions, biased reporting or conflicting information in project reporting may lead to a misinterpretation of technical and financial results, resulting in biased estimates or assumptions on project value.This paper provides a simple ‘Resource Project Framework’ for presenting a project’s status that may be readily benchmarked against other similar projects and to illustrate the stages required to advance the project outcomes to higher levels of certainty. The framework draws on definitions and guidelines readily available in various resource industry reporting codes and public company reporting requirements.The framework assesses three key areas for placing a resource project in its correct relative context, namely:the project development stagethe confidence in the Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and/or Ore Reservesthe level of accuracy, precision and confidence in the technical and economic studies supporting the reported results or options for the project.The application of the Resource Project Framework is illustrated using two project examples, one from publicly reported company project releases and the other for two development projects.CITATION:Noppé, M A, 2016. Of the energy resources present in Australia, coal and uranium are by far the largest. These two resources ap- pear sufficient to satisfy Australia's energy needs beyond the immediately foreseeable future and long after the natural petroleum resources are exhausted or have ceased to play a significant role. By that time, coal could be converted in plants of very large size to synthetic liquid and gaseous fuels which will be used as substitutes for pet- roleum fuels, particularly for transport. The basic role of uranium will be to supply electricity from nuclear power stations for heat and power requirements, thereby freeing non-coking coal largely for conversion purposes. The establishment of these enterprises will require a massive national effort and a high degree of co-ordination at the planning stage.

The CSIRO has pioneered the development and use of certain classes of magnetic resonance (MR) for mining applications. The MR technique is a radio frequency-based spectroscopy that provides highly quantitative measurement of selected ore minerals. MR has many inherent advantages for bulk sensing in mining applications, including deep sensing penetration into most bulk ores with the use of non-contact sensors that are robust and tolerant of demanding mine conditions. The highly discriminating nature of the technique also provides the very desirable attribute of robust and simple calibration, that can often be performed prior to sensor installation. Rapid sensing (within seconds) at very low grade (few hundred ppm Cu) has been demonstrated, as well as sensing at high tonnage rate. Besides sorting applications, MR may also be applied to preconcentration applications involving very large volume sensing including: (i) haul truck sensing using portal arrangements, where truck destination assignment may be dynamically determined based on the truck grade, (ii) in-pit gantries used for loading trucks that may similarly be equipped with sensors for truck assignment and (iii) deep mine bench sensing, recently progressed through a CRC ORE project, where local bench grade is determined at the few-metre lateral scale and at depth prior to blasting, to aid selective blasting and ore extraction. MR sensor prototypes have been developed for each of these applications and have been tested in laboratory or limited field conditions. To inform the value proposition for truck or bench sensing, initial analysis of truck assignment improvement based on an analysis of in-situ mine bench grade has been performed for a porphyry style deposit. The prototype sensors, preliminary results and future technology development and objectives will be described.

The theory of constraints (TOC) is a business improvement method that focuses on exploiting a business’s bottleneck to deliver the highest possible profit. Early applications were mostly in the manufacturing industry; however, the theory in itself is completely generic and has now been applied widely in other industries such as services, retail, software and distribution, amongst others. The intent of the approach is attractive – it focuses on the ‘silver bullet’ rather than ‘death by a hundred projects’, and it focuses on growth rather than cost cutting. Application within the mining industry has been limited to date, although there are a few applications emerging. This paper discusses how TOC can be applied to maximise value during the project planning phase and how to maximise profits when the mine is operational. The paper uses two case studies to illustrate the approach. Case study 1 uses the approach to improve tactical mine planning, which delivers an increase in revenue of 58 per cent. The second case study is a strategic mine planning example that delivers an increase in value of 77 per cent.CITATION:Finch, A and Elkington, T, 2014. Tracking plant and personnel in mining operations provides multiple potential benefits for a mine including improved safety, better monitoring of production, traffic control and, in the future, monitoring and control of autonomous vehicles. The main techniques currently proposed and used for wireless tracking are radio frequency identification (RFID), signal strength based techniques and time of arrival (TOA) based techniques. RFID provide poor accuracy in the complex radio propagation environment present in mines and does not provide continuous tracking and signal strength techniques. TOA based techniques are potentially the most accurate, however, most current equipment has not realised the potential of the technique. CSIRO has been developing the Wireless Ad hoc System for Positioning (WASP) system for wireless tracking in a range of challenging environments including underground mines and surface operations, where GPS reception is compromised by depth. The system utilises a number of ‘anchor nodes’ that are placed at fixed and known locations within the mine and tags attached to the plant or personnel to be tracked. The system provides an ad hoc data communication network, thus, wired data connections are not required to the anchor nodes. WASP uses transmissions in the 5.8 GHz ISM (instrumentation, scientific and medical) frequency spectrum to perform highly accurate ranging between nodes, hence tracking of tags. The localisation performance of the system depends upon the radio propagation environment, ranging down to 0.1 m in low multipath conditions. In this paper we describe the WASP system and provide results of testing in underground and surface operations showing the system achieving high ranging, hence localisation, accuracy.

Pipe umbrella systems have effectively been used as an additional support system in the working area in weak ground conditions during the last decades. Thus, a considerable number of applications accounts in urban tunnelling with shallow overburden. However, this support system is also successfully used when a tunnel alignment crosses fault zones, sediments, moraines or talus with overburdens from shallow to deep. The pipe umbrella support system itself is termed differently worldwide – synonyms are canopy tube umbrella method, umbrella arch method, or long fore-poling method.One main reason for the increase in application is that this support system closes cost-effectively the gap between reasonable, normal supported tunnels and tunnels supported with more expensive special techniques like horizontal jet-grouting or ground freezing. By using this system, many projects can be built more cost effective without decreasing the common level of safety.The pipe umbrella construction method is pretty young, so the knowledge about this system has been intensely researched in the last decade. This led to an enormous increase in understanding the interaction between support system and surrounding ground, the mode of action, and the important details for construction.Pipe umbrella support systems are applied in difficult ground conditions, so a special developed measurement arrangement was used to observe deformations ahead of the working face during tunnelling. The evaluation of collected data sets identifi ed that cased-drilling systems have clear advantages compared to predrilling systems during the installation process in weak ground conditions. This may become important depending on project requirements, so this difference must be considered in design as well as in the tender document specifications.

Since the introduction of the Neil George Five Point Safety System, to the underground sections of The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited mines in March, 1969, the Disabling Injury Frequency Rate has been halved and shows signs of contin- uing to fall. The total accident frequency rate has also fallen, although the decrease has not been as significant. Before the introduction of the Neil George Safety System, analyses of the direct causes of accidents showed that approx- imately 25 per cent were caused by "unsafe conditions", while 75 per cent were attribu- table to "unsafe acts". Within twelve months of introducing the system, these percentages had significantly changed to 7 per cent unsafe conditions and 93 per cent unsafe acts. Today, the figures are 3 per cent and 97 per cent respectively, and these figures clearly show that the main emphasis in the current programme must be directed towards making the operating men safety conscious. The effort must be focused on changing the minds of men.

The Lochiel Deposit is a large occurrence of soft brown coal about 130 km north of Adelaide. The deposit is undergoing continued evalua- tion of which an integral part was the excavation of a Trial Pit. The Trial Pit was deemed necessary to demonstrate that the deposit may be mined efficiently by draglines and the particular emphasis was on the geotech- nical and hydrogeological aspects of what may be termed difficult mining conditions. The dewatering of the Trial Pit was commenced in September 1986. After considerable planning and excavation was successfully completed in May 1987. The project is unique in terms of its size and technical com- plexity. It entailed excavation of over 230,000 m3 of overburden to an overall depth of 36 metres. The excavated material was utilised for experimentation in a Trial Dump. Included in the Trial Pit design were several novel techniques includ- ing depressurisation drains to improve mining conditions in soil strength materials and the use of vacuum to aid dewatering.
