Ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) explosives are unstable in hot, reactive sulphide-rich ground at Mount Isa. Under certain conditions associated with background heat, moisture, and chemical impurities from natural oxidation, ANFO composites in contact with hot ground disproportionate and the ammonium nitrate can undergo rapid exothermic reactions with sulphide.Reactions can occur in confined charges from prolonged contact with reactive sulphides, or by contamination with sulphide in loading. Partial interaction can result in misfires or premature detonation. Spilt, scattered and unpropagated explosive will undergo further reaction in sulphide-rich environments. ANFO-sulphide interaction is invariably exothermic and causes an irreversible chemical transformation of the ore.The heat generated during reaction may be dissipated, heating the environment, or rapidly accumulated to yield hot spots or areas in excess of 400°C. These can result in forced ignition of bulk sulphide and sustained combustion.Thermal analysis was used to define the critical conditions for ANFO-sulphide interaction and sulphide combustion.The occurrence of incandescent ore is attributed to the thermal interaction between exothermic hydrolysis oxidation, ANFO-sulphide, and combustion processes.Chemical agents and control methods have been developed to prevent ANFO-induced oxidation and combustion.

The stability of a raise bore is often assessed using the rock mass classification system published by McCracken and Stacey as a modification of the Q system. Often the assessment is done using a spreadsheet to manipulate geotechnical log(s) of boreholes. This paper discusses the inherent difficulties with this approach. Recent work by others to provide guidelines to the classification system is discussed. A recent example of the design and raise bore performance at Macraes Gold Mine, New Zealand is presented. A key issue is that a visual assessment of the drill core and/or core photographs is necessary to æground-truthÆ the classification.

In previous papers (1, 2), the influence on the creep resistance of elements normally found in commercial lead has been recorded. The results in the present paper refer to the influence of calcium, an element which is not found naturally in lead, but which has been used commercially in the form of alloys. It was realised that calcium would act as a deoxidising agent for lead-and in fact it was with this feature in view that both calcium and magnesium were used as additions. Subsequent work (including the results given in the present paper) has tended to diminish the importance which at first seemed to be associated with the presence of oxygen in lead. The structure of the dilute calcium lead alloys has been worked out in detail (S) and the phase diagram shows the existence of limited solid solubility and a compound CaPbs.

An on-stream shale detector has been developed that is suitable for use on conveyor belts carrying iron ore of up to 200 mm particle size. The shale is distinguished from high-grade iron ore by means of the substantially greater total natural gamma-ray activity (400-3000 keV) of the shale, which is due to the presence of uranium (214Bi), thorium (208TI) and potassium (40K). Other gangue materials, sueh as highly siliceous cherts and jaspilites, escape detection because of their low activity. A dynamic trial of the shale detector at Mt Whaleback, using a large-volume (100 × 100 400 mm long) "Polyscin" Nal(TI) gamma-ray detector, demonstrated that as little as 20 tonne of ore on a conveyor belt (equivalent to partial truckloads of ore) can readily be monitored for shale content.

With gold first discovered at Carrick in 1864, exploration and mining on the Carrick Goldfield in Central Otago, New Zealand, has now been ongoing for more than 130 years. Recorded historical hard rock production from up to 52 different mining claims from 1864 to about 1921 is 24,047 ounces (oz) of gold.   Since 1980 Amoco Minerals New Zealand Limited, CRA Exploration Pty. Limited, Amax Gold Mines New Zealand Limited and Summit Gold (New Zealand) Limited have conducted modem systematic exploration campaigns targeted at locating shear controlled gold bearing quartz lodes and stockwork deposits. More than NZ $1million has been spent by these companies on aerial photography, geological mapping, stream sediment surveys, soil and rock chip geochemistry as well as reverse circulation (RC) percussion and diamond drilling.   RC drilling by Summit Resources in 1997 has identified a 1,500 m long zone of low-grade gold mineralisation at Lower Carrick, with an average grade of 1.00 g/t Au over a 14 m average thickness. This gold mineralisation, hosted within a low angle shear zone, has analogies with the Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone in eastern Otago. Recent exploration and drilling at Carrick has revealed the potential to discover large (>0.5 million ounce (Moz)) low-grade bulk shear controlled quartz vein and stockwork gold deposits similar to those now being mined at Macraes.

Background information, formulae and a systematic set of procedures for estimating capital and operating costs for open pit mining equipment are presented in this paper. Firstly, equipment capital costs are required. These can be obtained from either suppliers, contractors or from first principles. The equipment is then divided into cost elements. Typically these are fuel and power requirements, spare parts consumption, wear items such as tyres, teeth and drill bits and finally repair and operating labour requirements. By consideration of the cost and life of each element a base cost can be derived. The base cost is then adjusted to suit specific site conditions such as the proximity to spare parts suppliers, the duty or ground conditions and the management and operator skills specific to the site. Hence, the same item of equipment can be costed to reflect different operations. Included are tables and data for typical plant items. Several examples are also given to illustrate the methodology being presented. The intention is to provide a set of procedures to allow costs to be built up from base level in a systematic and repeatable way. Applications for these costs include feasibility studies, budgetting and data for economic analyses.

Laboratory flotation tests on sized fractions of a certain number of selected minerals with homologous fatty acid derivatives (i.e. sodium salts and amine acetates) confirm that the higher homologues are more efficient collectors than the lower. Tests were carried out on sized material and finer size fractions floated at lower collector concentrations.It is suggested that selective flotation is best achieved with the reagent which most readily floats the most friable mineral in the ore, and that grade of product will be improved with the lowest usable homologue.INTRODUCTIONFlotation of non-sulphide minerals with fatty acids as collectors is usually less selective than the flotation of sulphide minerals with xanthate collectors. Variations in delay timing can have a marked influence on blasting effectiveness and, hence, on total production costs. In single-row bench blasts, delay firing is invariably more effective than simultaneous initiation. In single-row delayed blasts, there is an optimum inter-hole delay above and below which inferior blasting results are obtained. This optimum delay is equal to the time required for each charge to just effectively detach its quota of the burden. The inter-hole delay should seldom be less than 4 ms.m-l of burden.In multi-row blasts in which holes in a given effective row are fired on the same delay, the entire burden on any effective row should be detached from the rock mass just before charges in the next effeotive row detonate. Delays shorter than this give inferior blasting results and an increased likelihood of environmental and slope stability problems. If the inter-row delay is too long, cut-offs can occur, especially where the delay unit is located outside the blasthole. For a surface delay system, the optimum inter-row delay usually varies between 4 ms.m-l and 8 ms.m-l of effective burden. The number of rows that can be fired effectively with surface delay systems (in a single blast) is limited by the threat of cut-offs. Greater interrow delays and a larger number of rows per blast can be fired to advantage with down-the-hole delay systems.There are practical limits to the timing accuracy of all available delay systems. The existence of delay time variability should be recognized and duly considered in the design of blasts.The relationship between delay timing and blasting vibrations is not discussed.

Some of the, techniques of tunnelling have been adopted in horizontal headings, and in main vertical shafts, mechanical plant has displaced hand labour with notable success. However, in the field of small rises and winzes, improvements have largely been effected by attention to details of procedure. The most promising avenues for' substantial reductions in cost relate to:(a) Long-hole drilling(b) The borehole method(c) Calyx drilling.Whilst each of these methods has its peculiar advantages, the borehole rising method is probably most useful, and capable of wide application.In brief, the borehole method of rising requires a, drill hole parallel to the axis of the rise. A hoisting rope is passed through the borehole, and is attached to a platform on which the rising crew are raised with their equipment to the drilling position in the rise.When properly planned, the method is particularly safe, and has generally received the approval of mine inspectors and safety authorities. Fire suppression systems are now recognised by both NFPA 502 and PIARC as legitimate tools for both life protection and asset protection. The effectiveness of these tools for life protection demands extremely rapid and accurate incident detection coupled with rapid response. This rapid response must be integrated with other emergency systems such as emergency ventilation. The March 2007 fatal Burnley Tunnel incident in Australia graphically illustrates the potential of effectively integrated fixed suppression systems to protect people from harm and save infrastructure from damage. Despite the raft of technology available in that instance to the operator it was the human operatorÆs ability to effectively control the emergency equipment and not the equipment itself which so positively influenced the threat to life and property.

Flinders Mines is an iron ore explorer and developer with a tenement package located in the Hamersley Ranges region of Western Australia, approximately 70 km north of Tom Price. Exploration over the past five years has identified a Global Resource in excess of 900 Mt at a grade of 55.2 per cent Fe (+50 per cent Fe cut-off). This resource is spread across multiple deposits and has been divided into a number of mineralisation type domains. These domains are comprised of transported hematite rich detrital iron deposits (DID) and goethite dominant channel iron deposits (CID) as well as in situ bedded iron deposits (BID). The BID at PIOP is low in alumina and silica with a high calcined iron content making it an attractive exploration target. BID exploration techniques include a combination of mapping, structural analysis, downhole gamma logging and 3D geological modelling. Relationships identified between existing BID mineralisation, geology and structure has aided in targeting additional mineralisation across the tenement and highlighted other previously untested areas that warrant further investigation.CITATION:Tylkowski, L N, Corlis, N J, McDonald, G D, Petts, A E, Jennings, M F and Thomas, B J, 2013. Long-hole directional drilling for in-seam exploration was introduced to New Zealand at Huntly West Mine in 1989. Following the success of this initial drilling program the Coal Corporation of New Zealand (CoaICorp) purchased its own drilling equipment and proceeded to adopt the technique with in-housetraining. From July 1991 to September 1992 a total of 15 455 metres was drilled at Huntly West Mine. During this period several modifications were made to the drilling technology to suit the ground conditions. The resulting interpretations of the drill information enabled reliable seam definition to be incorporated in mine planning. Since January 1993, the technique has been transferred to the Huntly East Mine to assist with seam definition for the planned development westwards under the Waikato River. The benefits of this drilling technique to coal mine planning are now well documented in Australia and New Zealand as well as other overseas countries. The possibilities of adapting the long-hole drilling technique to hard rock applications has been illustrated recently with successful cross-measure drilling at Huntly East Mine.

UNDER a contract relating to the sale of a Broken Hill concentrate, the differentiation between granular and slime concentrate is determined by the proportion of the material which will pass a 200-mesh (I.M.M. standard) screen, and this has led to considerable attention being devoted to the question of laboratory sizing tests with screens of this order.It was found that many of the screens turned out by the makers during the war, and also since its termination, did not conform with the I.M.M. specifications as closely as some supplied in pre-war days. A perfect screen is hardly to be expected, but when the above contract was framed the parties anticipated that, by special care being taken during manufacture, a screen at least as good as the best pre-war screens would be available. This, however, has not proved to be the case, and the large irregularities in screens recently supplied render them useless for sizing determinations under the contract. With the rapid expansion of our industrialised society in recent years the demand for minerals has grown to such an extent that uncertainties about availability and cost have arisen, especially in the case of energy minerals.Minerals have acquired a new dimension for governments as the availability of these resources is interwoven with the ability of governments to achieve their developmental goals on national and international levels. Accordingly, the supply of minerals will increasingly be affected by social and political factors.

In addressing the need for non-degree tertiary training, let us examine some recent reviews of engineering and geoscience education. The Finniston Report (1) criticised the formation of engineers in the UK and stated that this was largely due to the narrow British conception of engineering as a branch of applied science which militates against an effective marriage between theory and application. It also criticised the system for not giving students sufficient grounding in the synthesis of technical, human and financial considerations within their undergraduate courses. As we all know, this report has led to the restructuring of engineering education in the UK. More recently, a Review of the Discipline of Engineering was carried out in Australia by a committee chaired by Professor Sir Bruce Williams (2). The report stated that: Australia has a fairly good system of engineering education that should be made better. more should be done to develop the communication skills of both staff and students. more attention should be paid to changes in engineering practice and the human element in technology. there is a serious shortage of state of the art equipment in most engineering schools. female enrolments in engineering courses should be increased from the current level of about 7% to 20% by 1997. employers should develop a better understanding of the need for continuing education. staff in engineering schools should develop closer relations with employers of engineers. higher education institutions with engineering schools should give financial and other inducements to staff to increase the proportion of study leave or professional development leave spent working as engineers in the business sector. there is considerable room for improvements in the teaching process and in the development of evaluation schemes for assessing the teaching contributions of staff. In its recent report to the Council of the Institution of Engineers, Australia, the Task Force on Engineering Education(3) makes the following points: managerial, entrepreneurial, professional and interpersonal skills should be introduced and integrated into the undergraduate courses but studied in depth as part of continuing education. the continuing education policy of the Institution should be promoted and strengthened with all engineers required to pursue continuing education. the Institution should develop a comprehensive guide to continuing education available from universities, colleges and other public and private sector organisations.

THE Phillips River gold and 'copper field is situated on the south coast of Western Australia, about 200 miles east of Albany, 180 miles west of Esperance, and: 250 miles south of Southern Cross, forming the southern extremity of what Mr. H. P. Woodward classes as the fourth belt of Pre-Cambrian rocks, and the first auriferous belt, whicf extends northward through Southern Cross, Mount Magnet, and Cue. The field may be considered the premier copper producer of the State. The first mineral discoveries were made about 1892; when gold, copper, and iron pyrites were found; but, owing to the isolation of the district and the scarcity of water, both in the locality and on the route thereto, little work was done for some years. A study of the swelling behaviour of a single batch of high-grade iron ore pellets during hydrogen reduction in a fixed bed showed that the extent of swelling is governed by the nucleation and growth of crystalline iron protuberances from the wüstite grains. Over the reduction temperature range 650 to 1000°C, it was found that substantial degrees of swelling can occur at temperatures in excess of 850°C, and significant variations in the swelling behaviour of individual pellets from different bed levels are observed under these conditions.The results are discussed in terms of a recent swelling theory and shown to be in general agreement.
