THE most concentrated industry of major character in the United States is that of the Ford Motor CO., which is to say Henry Ford. Its sole function is to supply the public with a cheap motor car which it does to the extent of two million or so per annum. In doing this, a relatively small profit per unit is multi- plied to an enormous aggregate per annum and has resulted in the creation of one of the greatest industrial fortunes of the world. The industrial and sociological consequences of .this are bound to be immense. On the physical side the production of two million automobiles means the consumption of two or three million tons of materials, chiefly metals, in the 'direct form of the finished product', and a huge additional tonnage of coal and other things that ,are consumed en route, and also the labor of many thousands of men. In the development of a business on this scale it was but natural that the Ford Motor ,Co. should seek to supply itself with the raw 'materials it needs, and they being so largely coal and metals the company is brought into close contact with the mining and metallurgical industries. It is a huge consumer of - steel. It is the fourth largest consumer of copper. It is a large consumer of lead, tin, aluminum and zinc. The mining and metallurgical industries have, therefore, good reason to learn to know Henry Ford, his personality, his thoughts and his policies.

PART I SUMMARY CERTAIN relations between the formation of ore deposits and other geological processes are pretty generally accepted, namely: that many ore deposits are closely associated with igneous activity; that ore deposits accompany certain types of intrusive bodies, notably batholiths and stocks, and that they are concentrated near the tops of such bodies; that igneous activity occurs in belts of strong folding and faulting; that folding and faulting are greatest in basins of extensive sedimentation and least in areas of erosion or slight sedimentation; that areas of erosion or slight sedimentation and of heavy sedimentation persist over long periods and exert a major control over structure, igneous activity, and ore deposition; that cycles of erosion, deposition, folding and faulting, igneous activity, and ore deposition, have been repeated through geologic time resulting in rather definite periods in which metal deposits have formed. In short, ore deposition is but one phase of a series of closely related geological events. It is attempted in this chapter to point out the relations of these interreacting geologic processes to the distribution of ore deposits in the western United States. Three great periods of mineralization are recognized; pre-Cambrian, post-Jurassic, and late Cretaceous-Tertiary. In distribution the deposits of the three periods, with certain exceptions, show a concentration about two large positive areas, the Colorado plateau and the Columbia plateau, which suggests a causal relation. The most general age divisions of the rocks of the Cordilleran region of the United States are (1) pre-Cambrian, and (2) Cambrian and later rocks. The pre-Cambrian rocks are exposed mainly through the Rocky Mountain belt from the Canadian boundary southward to Arizona and westward through Arizona to southern California. They have commonly

INASMUCH as galena and sphalerite flotation concentrates are being produced that contain over 95 per cent galena or sphalerite, it is not unreasonable to believe that a flotation concentrate assaying at least 80 per cent of native gold can he secured provided the gold is free. As yet, little if any fundamental information has been published concerning the flotation of free gold either alone or in the presence of sulfides. So far, we are unable to make as complete a separation of gold from sulfide minerals by flotation as is possible in, the separation of one sulfide from another by this method. An introductory study of the flotation of several free gold ores has been made in our Utah laboratories. For this study three general types of gold ores were chosen, namely: (1) Quartzite containing 0.26 oz. gold per ton in which no base metals are present; (2) sulfide ore (2.04 oz. Au; 1.31 oz. AO containing pyrite as the only sulfide present and the gold free; and (3) oxidized ore (1.10 oz. Au; 0.70 oz. Ag) from an oxidized zone of the vein from which sulfide ore (No. 2) was taken; little sulfide iron was present.

1. INTRODUCTION. THE general impression regarding the preparation of merchantable anthracite is that it is confined to a colossal, grimy structure, called a "coal-breaker." This name is misnomer; for the desired result is not to break the coal, but to prevent its being broken. Preparation may be said to begin at the face of the chamber, with the mining and loading of the coal. Local conditions vary, not only in the same field or basin, but also in the same mine, so that there is no fixed empirical rule governing the method of blasting or cutting coal. Tests should be made, when possible, to determine the explosive, or the mechanical coal-cutter, which will produce the largest percentage of what are locally known as " lump " and " prepared sizes " of anthracite. The prepared sizes are those mostly consumed for domestic purposes. All other sizes might be called by-products of the anthracite industry; for they are not especially desirable, being the degradation resulting from the mining and handling of a brittle or laminated material. Being low in volatile combustible matter, anthracite burns most successfully when nearly of a uniform size, permitting the easy passage of air through the voids. This accounts for the large number of sizes into which the coal is separated. Table I. gives the various sizes, the diameter of ring over and through which each size is made, and the usual purpose for which it is employed.

I. INTRODUCTION The new slime-concentrating plant at the Washoe Reduction Works, Anaconda, was put into operation during March, 1914. This plant, which has a capacity of 26,000,000 gal. of slime pulp carrying 2,500 tons. of solid matter per day, consists of Dorr thickeners and Anaconda multiple-deck slime concentrators.' This plant is the culmination of a great deal of experimental work extending over a considerable period of time, which work will be described briefly in the following pages.

An analysis of the semiconductor injection laser is presented which is based on a phenomenological model using device and material parameters. The intent of the laser threshold analysis is not to predict from theory the actual threshold current density but rather to provide a logical means of interpreting experimental results. The device and material parameters have been selected such that they describe both the threshold conditions and quantum efficiency of the lasev. A technique is proposed whereby the current required to obtain a population inversion is predicted from device 1-V characteristics. Experimental data are presented which support the analysis. THIS investigation is concerned with the characteristics of GaAs lasers fabricated in this laboratory. However, the assumptions used in these calculations should not limit their application to GaAs alone. It is felt that the analysis is sufficiently general to be useful in describing the operation of other semiconductor-laser materials. ANALYSIS heavily doped semiconductors to be considered. The absorption and/or generation of optical radiation may be completely specified in terms of q(E) and the probability functions f,,(E) and f,(E) which define the occupancy of the valence-band and conduction-band levels, respectively. The symbols used in this analysis are listed at the end. Under forward-bias conditions the function f, is determined by the electron quasi Fermi level in P-type material. For sufficiently large forward bias the second term in Eq. [3] will become dominant and net gain will result; i.e., g will become positive. Grindability or resistance to fine comminution is the fundamental issue involved in the application and sizing of grinding mills. Over the years, many theories for determining the amount of energy required for size reduction to a specified fineness have been proposed. The first published theory, introduced by P. R. von Rittinger in 1867, stated that the energy required for crushing or grinding is proportional to the increase in surface area produced. The surface area of a ton of particles of diameter (d) is proportional to (1/d), therefore the work input per ton for particles of diameter (d) would be proportional to (1/d). The second significant theory is that of F. Kick published in 1885. Kick said that the work required is proportional to the reduction in volume of the particles concerned. If (f) is the diameter of the feed particles and (p) is the diameter of the product particles, the work input relationship would be: [W =Ioq(f/p) 9] The "Third Theory" of F.C. Bond, introduced in 1951, states that the work required is proportional to the length of the new crack tips produced in particle breakage during crushing or grinding and equals work represented by the product minus that represented by the feed.
