NEW ZEALAND is dependent on the outside world for its ferro goods, yet it can boast of at least two well-defined iron-ore deposits; namely, Para Para limonite, 3 Fe203 + 21120 also found as lower hydrated oxides, and Taranaki iron-sand, a combined magnetite and ilmenite, 2FeO + 2Fe203 + FeO + Ti02. This latter deposit forms the greater portion of the beach sands of the west coast of the North Island of New Zealand. It is so fine that the whole of a sample passed through a sieve of 40 meshes to the inch. The ilmenite cannot be detected by the microscope, as in the titaniferous ores of the Adirondacks, nor can it be magnetically separated, as in the titaniferous ore of Natashkwan, Canada. To all appearances it is a chemical compound of the double oxides of iron and titanium and not a mechanical mixture, as is the ore of the Adirondack deposits.

The function of gas in the development and production of oil has far-reaching consequences that should be emphasized. The technical aspects of the subject have recently had a great deal of attention but less thought has been given to fundamental concepts underlying oil and gas law and the many customs and practices that have grown up in the industry. I shall review briefly the advance in knowledge of the subject and attempt to relate these concepts to legislative, judicial and operating problems. Early writers on oil and gas in Pennsylvania noted their close association in oil pools and their contemporaneous decline in output; also, that as gas pressure decreases so does production, that new offset wells reduce the output of existing wells, and even that tubing a well lengthens its flowing life. Expanding gas was deduced as the principal expulsive force. These fundamental observations had been made at least as early as 1880.1 They were treated, however, as academic considerations and did not greatly influence law or practice for many years except to instill into all operators an urgent desire to hasten offset drilling in order to obtain as much of the flush as possible. The most noteworthy later advance in knowledge came in 1926 when Beecher and Parkhurst published their paper on Effects of Dissolved Gas upon the Viscosity and Surface Tension of OiL.² This paper added to the old idea of an expelling force the concept of a modifying agent that actually changes the physical characteristics of the oil and facilitates its movement through the pore spaces of the reservoir rock. Largely since the publication of this paper, intensive study and concerted effort have been given to means of using to a maximum, in producing oil, these combined properties of gas. This is shown clearly by the number of papers dealing with the subject, and the new and revived terms now widely used to express thought, such as the expressions gas energy, reservoir pressure, reservoir energy, gas-oil ratio, bottom-hole pressure, beaning, tapered tubing and back-pressure. There have been no publications of the deformation and recrystallization orientations of the metal beryllium, yet pronounced textures would certainly be anticipated since it is close-packed hexagonal in structure. Having an axial ratio approximately that of magnesium, beryllium probably deforms by nearly the same slip and twinning mechanisms that operate in magnesium, and the textures are likely to be similar or but slightly different from the magnesium textures. In the tests reported below this is found to be the case; the textures are found to differ from those of magnesium only in the details of the scatter from the average orientation. This report covers not only samples rolled at room temperature, but some rolled at elevated temperatures. Since magnesium has been suspected by some investigators of altering its crystallo-graphic deformation mechanism at elevated temperatures, it was considered possible that beryllium might do so and alter its textures accordingly. No pronounced alterations were found, however. Unfortunately, the theory of deformation textures is not in a state of development that permits one to deduce the deformation mechanism from a knowledge of the textures, which means that the similarity of textures at different rolling temperatures, reported here, cannot be taken as definite evidence that the deformation mechanism is actually the same at all temperatures. The general similarity of the deformation textures of magnesium and beryllium also extend to the recrystallization textures of the two metals, judging by the pole figures for recrystallized sheet presented in this report. Samples were prepared in the form of composite sheets made up of small pieces stacked in a pile. Each piece was trimmed with scissors so that an edge was parallel to the rolling direction, dipped in paraffin, and assembled into the pack by aligning it under the cross hair of a microscope. As the desired orientation was obtained on each piece it was secured in place by touching with a hot wire to melt the paraffin. A stack of ten or fifteen pieces was built up in this way, then trimmed to the shape of a T; the portion to be X rayed was then etched to the shape of a wire about 0.045 in. diam with 6N HCl. This method of shaping the sample is a modification of that used by Bakarian on magnesium.' The absorption of the rays in the sample was so slight that it caused no difficulty in interpreting the films. Exposures were made with a 0.030 in. diam pinhole, using molybdenum radiation (40 kv, 25 ma, Type A film at 5 cm, 2 to 3 hr exposures). With the recrystallized specimens it was found necessary to oscillate the specimen so as to reduce the spottiness of the lines. A range of oscillation of 5" was SUB- cient to produce reasonably satisfactory patterns, though the quality was somewhat inferior to that of the deformation texture patterns, and only two degrees of intensity were read from the arcs on the films. Typical photo-grams for each of the deformation textures and the recrystallization texture are assembled in Fig 1. The pole figures were plotted in the usual way with the intensity of the various portions of the diffraction rings estimated by eye. Seven to nine films were made of each sample and each was carefully read in plotting the pole figures. Typical series included exposures with the beam normal to the rolling direction and at 11, 26, 41, 56 and 71" to the cross direction, plus two exposures with the beam normal to the cross direction, and at 11 and 79" respectively to the rolling direction. The rolling was in each case considered sufficient to develop the final texture: the reduction by cold rolling was 84 pct (from 0.0045 to 0.0007 in. thickness), following prior hot rolling in longitudinal and transverse directions and recrystallization; the reduction by hot rolling at 800°C was 90 pct (0.010 to 0.001 in.), following similar prior treatment; the reduction by rolling at 350°C was 88 pct (from 0.005 to 0.0006 in.) after similar prior treatment. The recrystallization texture was determined on a sample rolled at 350" to a reduction of 88 pct (0.0165 to 0.002 in.) after similar prior treatment, then mounted between steel strips to keep it flat and annealed at 700" in an atmosphere of argon. Mr. Wells very adequately presents the case and point that there are a great number of variables which must be analyzed during an economic evaluation of an FUND RESOURCE, such as copper or uranium.

THE name for this new method of mining is derived from a composition of Horizontal, Radial, Diamond, and the drilling is from raises. This method, worked out at Copper Mountain, B.C., is believed to be distinct in many features from other known methods. GEOLOGY The ore deposits of Copper Mountain are related to the Copper Mountain stock, which is an ideal example of the magmatic differentiation in that it grades from a basic gabbro at the border to an almost pure orthoclase-pegmatite core. The "contact" ore bodies lie along the contact of the gabbro and an older complex of volcanics and sediment termed the "Wolfe Creek" formation. These older rocks, collectively referred to as greenstone, had been fractured prior to the intrusion of the stock and were highly metamorphosed during the intrusion. The "outlying" ore bodies are somewhat different in character, though a similar structural pattern prevails. It is believed that a deep-seated magma of which the Copper Mountain stock is a part has given off solutions that caused a partial granitization of some of the volcanics. Mining problems are caused further by the presence of a series of soft barren dikes intersecting a great many of the ore bodies, which are about 30 ft. wide, strike north-south, and dip at a high angle to the east; and are further increased by the presence of four major faults, with a great many minor faults running at acute angles from them. Fault zones average 8 ft. in width, and consist of gouge and breccia. They strike northeast and dip steeply to the northwest. The faults cut through the ore zones and the dikes, and continue on into the gabbro. The general mine structure with two types of ore bodies, bounded by weak walls and intersected by several series of soft barren dikes and major faults, indicated that a method of mining should be devised that would remove the ore at low cost with the least disturbance of the waste walls and dikes. THEORETICAL ESTIMATE OF STOPING WITH THE DIAMOND DRILL After consideration of various methods, the most suitable one appeared to be horizontal drilling to break the ore in a manner similar to shrinkage stoping. Drilling vertical holes or rings from a bench and breaking to an open slot was eliminated because the weak walls of ore, dike or waste would not permit this type of opening. It was then decided to drill either horizontal radial holes from a raise or parallel holes from a slot cut across the ore body. The process of plastic extension of face-centered cubic single crystalline rods is so well understood, since the notable studies of Taylor and Elam,1 that the change in orientation of any crystal by slip and rotation may be predicted from the measured elongation. It is customary to assume a very homogeneous deformation, wherein gliding lamellar arc free to rotate so that their slip direction continually approaches the axis of the rod, until a second slip system comes into operation; whereupon conjugate slip proceeds quantitatively to an end adjustment with the [121] direction in the axis of the rod. This process has been checked in malty face.-centered cubie materialsand and readily permits the preparation of specimens that have been subjtvted to various determinable amounts of shearing action. It is elearly of interest to study in such measurably strained speeimens the, development of a recrystallized structure on annealing and if possilble detect the source of nuclei from which the new crystals grow. Strain-:~nneali~ig experiments of this charactcr have been performed by others but not in detail sufficient to permit a study, for example, of the number of recrystallized grains vs. the amount of shear. In the experiments now reported, this was done with a wide variety of orientations covering nearly the entire range of slip on a single system and corresponding to amounts of shear (ratio of shearing distance to distance between lamellae at the conclusion of a test of from 0.08 to 0.57. A particular point wa-made of determining the crystallite rotation, or small angular range. assumed by the octahedral slip plane after these various amounts of shear. The, mechanism of reerystallization and the magnitude and effeet of recovery on the recrystallization process was investigated.

IN recent years the Homestake mine has been served by three shafts, the B. &. M., the B. & M. No; 2 and the Ellison, supplemented by an inside shaft, the Milliken, extending from the 2000-ft. level to the 3200-ft. level. In 1932, when a new operating shaft was under consideration, the bottom of the mine was at the 3200-ft. level. The B: & M. and the B. & M. No. 2 shafts were down to the 1550-ft. level and the Ellison was being deepened from the 2600 to the 3200-ft. level. All ore was hoisted at the B. & M. and-Ellison shafts. Levels below the 2600 level, which were under development only, were served by the Milliken shaft. Below the 1550-ft. level, the mine was served only by the Ellison shaft from the surface. Within a few years, when ore reserves above the 1550-ft. level would be depleted, operation would be limited to the Ellison shaft and the auxiliary underground shaft. The Ellison shaft alone was not adequate for hoisting the entire output from the deeper levels and also handling all men and supplies. Further-more, assurance of safety and uninterrupted operation required- two fully equipped shafts to the deeper levels. Therefore a new operating shaft was authorized in November, 1932, and was named for A. J. M. Ross, the mine superintendent.

The trend initiated in January 1936, of stabilized gasoline prices, increased demand and extraordinary drilling activity, continued in California during the year 1937. Crude prices were maintained during the year at the highest level since September 1930. Wildcat activity with resultant new discoveries and development of proven acreage were greater than in any year since 1928. Many fields in California in former years have been produced at full capacity, with consequent loss of reservoir energy, but at the present time continued activity is maintained to develop adequate reserves, so that production in these fields can be taken at a rate to correspond with good operating practice. Naturally, this good operating practice will be influenced to some degree by gas outlets and, in certain instances perhaps, by oil outlets. In any event, these last two controlling features will result in favorable rather than detrimental operation. In fields producing from great depths, ultimate production will be practically limited to the flowing and compressor life of the well, since there is as yet no economical method for pumping wells below depths of approximately 7000 ft. Experience has shown, however, that such pumping difficulties will be overcome and that production secured by pumping will add some to reserves established on the flowing life of the wells. California continued to operate under voluntary curtailment, but with unlimited transfers of allowable between various fields. Even though there was at all times considerable production above the Umpire's established quota, a constantly increasing demand reduced storage during the year. This increasing demand was due mainly to the rapid rise in Pacific foreign shipments from May to September. It is questionable, however, whether this favorable condition will be maintained over a prolonged period. (See Fig. 1.) As already announced, the Arizona Meeting of the Institute is to be held from the 18th to the "25th of September. There will be a special train from New York City to Arizona and return, to take members and guests of the Institute to the meeting., The Committee in charge consists of Walter Douglas, Chairman, Cleveland E. Dodge, John C. Greenway, Arthur S. Dwight and Julius Kruttschnitt, Jr., and while the plans of this Committee are not complete, it may he announced that 'the train will be run with the requisite number of Pullman, dining and baggage cars to accommodate those who desire to go, which will accompany the party during the entire week of the Arizona Meeting as per the following program, including, of course, the visit to the Grand Canyon. It is especially desirable that the Committee should know, at as early a date as possible, the number of those who desire to make the trip; and those who desire special accommodations such as drawing rooms, state rooms, etc., are especially requested to communicate as soon as possible with the Secretary of the Institute, stating the number in their party.

IT will hardly be worth while to spend time over the discovery of this mine, how lumps of galena, were picked up and brought to town, and how legends were told of an old mine from which Revolutionary bullets were made. This is an entirely new mine, with no evidences of former or ancient workings in its immediate vicinity to guide or attract the prospector. The first pit was opened in May, 1874. In August I made a visit to this pit, which was 6 feet wide in the northwest direction, 12 feet long north 80° east, and 6 feet deep. About 4 tons of a galena carrying gray copper, siderite, and quartz, had been taken fron this pit. The lumps were all of them evidently float specimens, and varied from 8 to 12 inches thick, and showed very distinct indica- * An abstract of this paper was kindly presented by Dr. T. A RESUME. of some important points regarding the life of drill steel, which have so far been learned from investigations carried out in the SKF Hofors' mines, Sweden, by L. Nordenfelt, is given below. By examining all fatigue breakages which occurred in the test it has bees conclusively proved that when a rock drill of the self-rotating type is used all break-ages of this kind start from the surface of the hole in the steel. It has further been proved that the rough hole surfaces (i.e., the marks left by the indentations of the sand core), are the starting points for the fatigue cracks and that the corrosive action of the water has .a very detrimental influence on the life of the steel. It is now a well known fact that this corrosive action concentrates at the bottom of the indentations left by the sand. The corrosive action of water has been well described by U. R. Evans in his paper, "Some Recent Work on the Corrosion of Metals," delivered on March 31, 1926, before the Liverpool Engineering Society, which is quoted in part below: "It is well known that, under ordinary conditions, most metals do not corrode in water unless dissolved oxygen is present. The strange feature of corrosion in submerged metals, however, is that the attack does not proceed mainly over those portions of the surface which could be reached readily by oxygen; deterioration takes place at certain points which are relatively, inaccessible to oxygen. When. a metal becomes pitted by corrosion, further attack usually deepens the pits, and in many cases it could be proved that there was no free oxygen at the bottom of the pits. None of the older theories of corrosion explain the fact that, although oxygen is necessary for rapid corrosion to take place, the attack actually occurs at the very points which could not be reached directly by oxygen.

As already said Pattin's map and the later one of Evans' showed coal in several places in Ohio as early as 1750, and possibly 1748; the reference on the latter map was' to an exposure near Bolivar, in Tuscarawas County, as well as along the Hocking River. So far. as now known, it 'was not mined in either place until 1810. George Croghan, in descending the Ohio with his party in 1765, mentions an "Alum Hill" which they saw near the present site of Pomeroy, probably an exposure of saline deposits, but does not mention coal. As settlement north of the Ohio River was prohibited until 1787, no coal was mined until long after that date. In 1785 a survey of seven ranges in the Ohio country was made, the line running west from a point on the north bank of 'the Ohio River, due north of the western termination of the southern boundary of Pennsylvania. The surveyors noted, "from hence to Stoney Brook between two very steep and high Ridges; it is eight yards wide, its bottom is of Slate and Sand Stone, and in many parts of it are large pieces of excellent Coal washed by, the Rains from the Neighboring Hills."' This was the present Yellow Creek, and the coal was from some of the lower measures. The Scioto Company published a pamphlet in French in 1787, to promote the sale of their lands and emigration to them, in which was said,

For the past several years the policy of a large section of our mining industry in relation to our present bureaucratic form of government has become increasingly amusing, if not a little disgusting. In the past, mining men have always featured themselves the self-announced champions of free enterprise, and, generally, this conviction, was substantiated by their deeds. In recent years, however, a large group of the industry, while still expounding, from the front porch, the principles of free enterprise and a sound economy based upon the law of supply and demand, have gone around to the back door with palm extended, to join labor, farmers, bureaucrats, and other pressure groups to get their share of the take. The procurement of subsidies, bonuses, increased metal prices, and government assistance in a multitude of forms seems to have obscured from their thinking the welfare of the country as a whole and the sounder economic principles of a balanced budget and lower taxes. At the recent Colorado Mining Association convention in Denver, I. was alarmed to see just how far this specialinterest type of thinking has progressed within the mining industry. Government assistance to mining. was generally considered inadequate, and a flat bonus for any new mineral discovery was proposed. It was disquieting, too, to learn how far the federal alphabet agencies have entered into the mining industry and of the thousands of highly paid technical. men on the federal payroll required to man these numerous overlapping agencies and bureaus. Now all this is very fine, and some aspects of the federal give-away program can be very appealing to the unsuspecting in the mining industry as they have been to those in other groups. Some of these expensive programs may bring about a few dividends or even several new mines. But to this whole line of pump-priming reasoning there is one big disastrous fallacy.

The plight of the Japanese mining business is pitiful. Coal mines were given the highest priority for all materials they needed, yet between the end of the war and June 1948, the government was obliged to subsidize them to the extent of 22 billion yen, this being the difference between the consumer's price and the producer's price. Most of the metal mining companies have been operating at only one fifth to one third of war-time production rates, and financial losses have been terrific. The chief difficulties have been a plethora of office workers and a dearth of equipment, supplies, and miners. The principal material needs at metal mines are steel rails. cars, plates, nails, rubber hoses, and belting, to say nothing of modern core drills which are totally lacking. Until recently the great shortage was in coal; for lack of fuel the smelters and factories failed to produce the very metals and equipment now needed to operate the mines. Nation-wide shortages have created a monstrous inflation of prices throughout all the economy, currently amounting to 200 times the prewar figures. For example, the price of copper ranged from 500 to 900 yen per metric ton for many years until 1937, but in mid-1948 producers were

Recent literature shows that pronounced increases in oil recovery can result from the use of miscible systems in recovery operations. This literature also points out certain problems associated with maintaining miscibility, e.g., compositional changes resulting from alterations in pressure and temperature or from zone dilution. The purpose of the work described in this paper was to study miscible zones for possible use in waterflooding operations and examine the manner in which these zones break down. The fluid system selected for study was oil—terNary-butyl alcohol—water, which, because of its narrow range of miscibility, is ideally suited for investigation in short, linear systems. The laboratory-observed effects on oil recovery and zone stability of a number of variables are reported. Among the variables investigated were miscible zone size, viscosity ratio, length of travel, and interstitial water saturation. Results obtained with this system show that interstitial water adversely affects recoveries because of premature phase break. Salinity of the water further aggravates Ais situation. This effect, although pronounced for this system, would probably occur in any fluid system containing an alcohol. As expected, viscosity ratio has a decided influence on recovery efficiency and zone stability. The results also show that use of a suficieno zone size, even though the system has poor phase characteristics, yields higher oil recoveries than are obtained from straight water floods. Length-of-travel studies showed a square root relationship between zone growth and path length for favorable viscosity ratios. No such clear-cut dependence was observed under unfavorable viscosity conditions. INTRODUCTION As new oil reserves have become increasingly more difficult and expensive to find and develop, the oil industry has devoted more and more time and money to finding more efficient methods for exploiting known reserves. The increasing number of water floods is one manifestation of this attempt to improve oil recoveries from existing fields. Since considerable quantities of oil are by-passed by the waterflood process, it is only a partial answer to the problem. The search continues. Of late, several proposed processes have received the critical attention of investigators. Among them are gas drives, in situ thermal reactions and miscible displacements. The present paper is concerned with miscible displacements in conjunction with water floods. Recent literature1- reports that, under proper conditions, oil recoveries from LPG floods, propane sweeps, condensing gas drives, etc., approach 100 per cent of the oil in place in the region contacted by the flood. This literature also points out some of the problems associated with these processes, one of the main ones being the maintaining of miscibility. Compositional changes resulting from pressure and temperature variations or from zone dilution give rise to phase breaks and loss of miscibility, the conclusion being that, after loss of miscibility, much of the beneficial influence of the zone is lost.' The results of the subject work show that, if sufficient zone material exists ahead of a phase interface, considerable improvement in oil recovery can be obtained. In order to increase our understanding of the behavior of miscible systems as they degenerate into immiscible processes, a laboratory system having rapid deterioration characteristics was needed. The fluid system oil—ter tiary-butyl alcohol (TBA)—water possesses these properties and was the system investigated. Although these fluids are different from those generally employed in miscible studies, an understanding of their behavior can be applied to other miscible slug processes. However, under conditions where mass transfer maintains a miscible system through multiple contacts, e.g., enriched gas drive or high pressure gas drive, the observed behavior of alcohol zones would not be applicable. The variables of interest were zone size, viscosity ratio, length of travel, initial water saturation, rate and core characteristics. Of these, only the effects of the following on zone breakdown and oil recovery are reported in detail: (1) zone size, (2) path length, and (3) initial water saturation. The effects of viscosity ratio and core characteristics are discussed in conjunction with other variables. Although initial water saturation is not envisioned as important to the phase behavior of hydrocarbon systems, e.g., LPG, it is important in alcohol systems. The titanium-rich end of the Ti-AI phase diagram has been determined to the compound TiAI3 (62.7 pct Al), thus joining the aluminum-rich portion previously investigated by others and completing the diagram. Micrographic analysis and X-ray diffraction were the chief methods used to determine the phase relationships. THE Ti-Al phase diagram has been investigated as part of a program on titanium phase diagrams for the Wright Air Development Center. Included in the available information concerning the phase relationships in titanium-rich Ti-A1 alloys is a brief statement by Brown' that: "aluminum raises the transformation temperature to 1000°C (183Z°F)." This observation is interesting in that it is the first example of a metallic alloying component raising the transformation temperature of titanium, and consequently widening the field of the a solid solution. Busch and Freyer' presented resistivity data which indicated the formation of titanium-rich solid solutions of 1 and 3 pct A1 alloys prepared by powder metallurgy methods. Duweza found that there is only one other intermediate phase other than the known compound TiA1, (62.7 pct Al). This phase, designated as y, is of variable composition; its crystal structure is of the AuCu type and is therefore based on the composition TiAl (36.02 pct Al). Earlier work on the constitution of the aluminum-rich alloys has been reviewed by Hansen, and need not be discussed here. The tetragonal crystal lattice of TiAl,, as found by Fink, Van Horn, and Budge," was confirmed by Brauer." Recently, Schubert7 has reported that TiA1, is homogeneous within a limited composition range; however, the solubility limits were not given. The Ti-A1 phase diagram as presented in. this paper was determined by micrographic analysis of alloys containing from 1 to 62 pct Al, annealed at and quenched from temperatures between 700" and 1400°C. The phases and phase ranges investigated extend to the compound TiA1, (62.7 pct Al) to join the aluminum-rich end of the system determined by other investigators, thus completing the diagram. Methods of Investigation Preparation of Alloys: Iodide titanium, 99.9+ pct pure, obtained from the New Jersey Zinc Co., and high-purity (99.99+ pct) aluminum sheet from the Aluminum Co. of America were used to make up alloy ingots weighing 10 to 20 g. Detailed descriptions of melting techniques have been presented previously for work on the Ti-Mo and Ti-Cb> nd Ti-Si" phase diagrams. Briefly, the melting practice consisted of arc melting an accurately weighed charge in a copper block crucible insert in a non-consumable tungsten electrode furnace, under helium at atmospheric pressure. All ingots were carefully weighed after melting to detect possible losses. Comparison of weight before and after melting showed no appreciable weight changes. Also, chemical analyses were in close agreement with nominal compositions, Table I. The diagram as presented is, therefore, based on nominal compositions. Alloys were prepared having the following nominal aluminum contents: 1 ... 36 (1 pct increments), 38, 40, 41, 42.5, 44, 45, 46, 47.5, 49 . . . 64 (1 pct increments), 67, 70, 80, and 90. Ingots with up to 14 pct A1 were cold-pressed various amounts in order to increase the rate of attaining equilibrium structures on heat treatment. The amount of cold deformation that could be applied decreased with increasing aluminum content, until alloys containing 12 pct A1 or more cracked after only a few percent deformation. PERHAPS the most extraordinary thing about business, the trade and production of the country as a whole, is its amazing continuity and growth, its momentum and energy. It goes on year after year, growing steadily, almost without breaks, in spite of every kind of disturbance. We have been grossly deceived into the idea that business is highly variable. We have taken a few things like pig iron, and the like, constructional activity broadly, and imagined that these are a trustworthy measure of trade. Actually they are the worst that we could find. They do not apply to more than 10 per cent or, at the most, possibly 15 per cent of the total of the country's industrial activity. The other 85 or 90 per cent, or even more, goes on growing surely and steadily just like the growth of population and the steady advance in technique, invention, discovery, and improved methods of production Let me give you what seems to me one of the most remarkable examples of this amazing momentum and regularity. You know that 90 per cent or more of the business of the country is done 'by means of checks. About seven-eighths of the total of all checks drawn are reported regularly every week in the newspapers. Let us follow these reports from week to week, just as they come, and plot them up against the correspond- ing weeks of last year, and the year before, and the gear before that, as far back as you would like to go. Take especially the figures for 140 selected cities out- side of New York.

IN 1947 the author became interested in the fundamental aspects of the desilverizing of lead by zinc, conducted some experimental work, and searched the technical literature for all available fundamental data. Since then a revival of interest in the subject in Europe resulted in the appearance of quite a number of papers. It became evident that it would be more profitable to collect together and examine thoroughly the results of various workers, than to attempt to duplicate the experimental determinations. There are many inconsistencies in the various publications, and it is opportune to review at this time the present status of knowledge on the Ag-Pb-Zn system. There is also a need for a clear description, in fundamental terms, of the various desilverizing procedures. This paper is presented in four sections: 1—There is an historical review of the origins of the Parkes process, of the results of many attempts to find a satisfactory fundamental explanation for the phenomena, and of the modifications proposed to date. 2—A diagram of the Ag-Pb-Zn system is presented. This is believed to be free of obvious inconsistencies or theoretical impossibilities, although thermodynamic analysis subsequently may reveal errors. 3—The fundamental bases of the various desilverizing procedures, which have been used up to the present day, are described; and a new method is suggested for desilverizing a continuous flow of softened bullion in which the bullion is stirred at a low temperature in two stages producing desilverized lead at least as low in silver as that from the Williams continuous process and a crust which, on liquation, yields a very high-silver Ag-Zn alloy. 4—A suggestion is made for the revival of de-golding practice, following a recently published account which does not seem to have attracted the attention it deserves. The terms "eutectic trough" and "peritectic fold" as used in this paper are synonymous with "line of binary eutectic crystallization" and "line of binary peritectic crystallization" as used by Masing.' The German literature on ternary and higher systems is rather extensive and a fairly general system of nomenclature has arisen, whereas in English usage the corresponding terms are not as well established. For this reason the meanings of terms used in this paper, together with the equivalent German terms, are given as follows: 1—Eutectic trough—eutektische rinne: line at which a liquid precipitates two solids S1 and S2 simultaneously. If the composition of a liquid which is cooling reaches this line, it then follows the course of this line until a eutectic point is reached, or until all the liquid is exhausted. The tangent to the eutec-tic trough cuts the line joining S1S2. 2—Peritectic fold—peritektische rinne: line at which a solid S1 and a liquid L transform into another solid S2. If the composition of a liquid which is precipitating S1 reaches the line, on further cooling only S2 is precipitated. The liquid composition moves from one phase region (L + S1) into the other (L + S2), and does not follow the course of the boundary. The tangent to the peritectic fold cuts the line S1S2 produced nearer S,. 3—Liquid miscibility gap, or conjugate solution region—mischungslucke: the region within which two liquid phases coexist in equilibrium over a certain range of temperature. A system whose composition is represented by a point in this region comprises one liquid at high temperature; then as the temperature is progressively reduced, two liquids, one liquid and one solid, one liquid and two solids, and finally three solids. 4—Liquid miscibility gap boundary—begrenzung der flussigen mischungsliicke: the line along which the surface of the miscibility gap dome, considered as a solid model, intersects the surrounding liquidus surfaces. 5—Tie lines—konoden: lines joining points representing the compositions of two liquids, a liquid and a solid, or two solids, in equilibrium. In binary systems the only tie lines customarily drawn are those through invariant points, e.g., through the eutectics of the Pb-Zn and Ag-Pb systems, or the various peritectics of the Ag-Zn system, as in Figs. 1 to 3. In ternary systems it is desirable to draw sufficient tie lines to indicate the slopes of all possible tie lines. 6—Ternary eutectic point—ternares eutektikum: point at which liquid transforms isothermally to three solids, S1, S2, and S Such a point can lie only within the triangle 7—Invariant peritectic (transformation) point— nonvariante peritektische umsetzungspunkt: (a) — On the miscibility gap boundary, the point at which two liquids and two solids react isothermally so that L, + S, + L, + S2. (b)—On the eutectic trough, the point at which a liquid and three solids react iso-thermally so that L + S, + S2 + S3. Such a point must lie on that side of the line joining S,S which is further from S,. To note that environmental considerations had a major im¬pact on the minerals processing industry in 1971 would be something less than a profound observation. The degree of its importance was demonstrated by MBD when it established the Environmental Committee as a new unit committee within the Division to achieve greater participation in exchange of information relating to the technologies and problems involved. It is appropriate and necessary to devote special attention to this timely aspect of minerals processing, as its influence penetrates the research, engineering and operations of almost all unit technologies that comprise minerals processing. The pollution abatement aspect of this industry has been such a dominant factor in recent years there is reason to wonder whether progress in unrelated technologies has been curtailed. Perhaps so, to some degree, but unit committee reviews presented in this article suggest rather that it would appear to have served as a catalyst for accelerated progress in development of new methods and improvement in more conventional ones. Present concepts regarding primary metal or mineral recovery and by-product potential may change considerably as a result of improved technology in waste product treatment.
