During the summer of 1916, while on a visit to the United States Agricultural Experiment Station at Mayaguez, Porto Rico, the writers were told by D. W. May, the director, that an occurrence of manganese ore had been reported from the mesa southeast of Mayaguez. A visit to the locality showed that the mesa is covered by a mantle of bright red soil resting upon serpentine. Here and there over its surface concretionary masses of limonite have been mashed out of this soil. These were apparently mistaken for manganese ore. On account of the similarity of this occurrence to the extensive iron deposits of northeastern Cuba, it was thought that a brief description based upon a two days'reconnaissance survey of the area mould be of scientific interest. Mayaguez is on the west coast of Porto Rico, at Mayaguez Bay, which is the third in importance of the harbors of the island. INTRODUCTION The magnitude of the thermal expansion of silica brick, and its inability to withstand rapid temperature changes, present problems of considerable importance in the manufacture of siliceous refractories. In the study represented by the experimental data herein described, these problems are considered from the point of view afforded by the results of recent investigators: Fenner and his associates of the "Geophysical Laboratory, Washington, D. C., who have established the stability relations of the silica minerals, and Endell and co-workers in Berlin, who have studied the changes brought about in the constitution of siliceous refractory materials upon the application of heat. In the process of manufacture, the quartzite from which the brick is made changes in part into cristobalite and tridymite. The attempt is herein made to determine by microscopic methods the degree of transformation in various specimens of test bricks manufactured at slightly varying temperatures of burning, with varying coarseness of grain, and to determine the effect of repeated burning. S ULFURIC acid made in the United States during the last four years has averaged approximately 7,000,000 tons of 50" B6 acid a year. This is double the production of the year 1913. About 66 per cent of the acid is made from sulfur, 16 per cent from pyrite, 13 per cent at copper, lead, and zinc smelters, and the remainder from miscellaneous sources it her the chamber process or the contact process, (at some plants both) is used. In 1923, the contact process accounted for nearly 30 per cent of all the sulfuric acid made in this country and since then it has been increasingly employed. It was first introduced here in 1898, and has always .proved less expensive than the chamber process for the manufacture of .acid of high concentration and purity, but the latter produces acid of low strength suitable for many industries.

PRODUCTS made from the ores of the sillimanite group, and synthetic substitutes for them, have unique properties, and service tests prove that they are playing, and will continue to play, a major part in improvements in metallurgical processes. Also, they are examples of how comparatively useless, rare, or "museum" minerals have been made available in commercial quantities. Until research developed uses for them, the minerals had been observed only in small, scattered masses, or crystals. Improvements in ceramic processes and compositions have come about very gradually. In the last 10 or 15 years, several outstanding developments have been made. Of greatest interest to the mining and metallurgical engineers are those affecting the composition, necessitating the mining of new minerals, and improvements in ceramic products used in metallurgical processes.

IN the broad survey of the nonferrous' metallic elements contained in this book, the reader may well be impressed by the wide range of property combinations offered by the many metals and alloys the metallurgist has prepared since before Kubla Khan. The diversity is great and the overlap is considerable. It is particularly surprising, then, to find the latest structural metal new- comer designated by such extravagant terms as "Cinderella Metal," "Wonder Metal," "Miracle Metal," "The Metal of Tomorrow," "Dream Metal or Nightmare?" and "The Middleweight Champion of the Structural Metals." Of these and others, the most appropriate designation for the metal involved, titanium, appears to be that of The Middleweight Champion. Its intermediate density of 4.5 and elastic modulus of 16 million is a unique combination between the lower density and modulus of magnesium and aluminum and the higher density and modulus of copper, nickel, and iron. It is light, strong, ductile, and corrosion resistant. A chemical neighbor in group IV of the Periodic Table, zirconium, is similar to titanium in many respects but is appreciably denser, 6.5 instead of 4.5, less stiff and relatively much less abundant. On the other hand, the resistance of zirconium to acids and alkalies is better than that of titanium. Also, compensating for its higher density, lower stiffness, and somewhat lower strength level compared with titanium, zirconium has much better permeability to slow neutrons and is much more suitable as a material of construction for nuclear reactors.

The First Conference of the Powder Metallurgy Committee convened in the East Foyer of the Hotel Waldorf-Astoria, New York City, at 9:45 a.m., on Feb. 21, 1944, Mr. John Wulff, General Chairman, presiding. THE CHAIRMAN.-In behalf of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers I welcome all members and guests to this conference on Powder Metallurgy. We hope that this meeting will give expert and novice in the field a chance for discussion. Unfortunately, the subject has been overemphasized by some, and, of late, severely criticized by others. We have here today powder producers, fabricators, and engineers of different viewpoints, who can make the meeting a success. Such success depends not only on the caliber of the papers presented but more so on the discussion. To give you time for a free exchange of views, the papers have been shortened purposely. Roof bolting in coal mines has progressed very rapidly in the last decade, and today this method of support is in general use. There are many theories concerning the functions of roof bolts, but the importance of beam building is indisputable. Proper tension in the bolts minimizes shearing along bedding planes and creates a thick, competent beam from individually weak layers. Bolting must be accomplished immediately upon exposure of the roof, and bolt tension must be maintained if roof failure is to be prevented. Seams are being mined today with roof bolt support where conventional timbering was not effective1. The widespread use of continuous mining equipment was made possible by roof bolts which permit long supported spans free of obstructions.2 Since adequate anchorage is the key to successful bolting, better methods for determining the efficiency of anchorage are continually being sought. Attempts have been made to measure bolt loads, thus assessing anchorage efficiency by employing sensing devices between the bolt head and roof. 3,4,5 None of the techniques appears to be very accurate, and all have at least one serious deficiency.

ABOUT three miles west of Fontana San Bernardino County, California, and fifty miles east of Los Angeles, the Kaiser Co., Inc., has built an integrated steel plant. By integrated, I mean that from its wholly owned iron ore and coal supply, the Kaiser Co. is producing in its own mills iron and steel products. Pig iron to meet the West Coast needs has been produced at Fontana since Jan. 1, 1943; steel ingots were first poured there May 14, 1943; and steel plate for ships was first rolled Aug. 15, just sixteen months after ground was broken. Briefly, the plant consists of: (I) Two batteries of by-product coke ovens, totalling ninety ovens, carbonizing about 1740 tons of coal per day at capacity; with by-product facilities for the production of tar, ammonia, and ammonium suIphate, light oil distillates, and tar distillates. STOPING methods in which shoveling plays an important part are gradually being replaced by other and cheaper methods. But there will always be considerable shoveling done underground in stopes as well as in drifts, tunnels, urinzes, and shafts. At the mines of the PhelpsDodge Corporation at Tyrone, N. M., the cost of shoveling in all stopes in 1917 amounted to 24c. per T. In the top-slice stopes for the same period, it cost 27 c. per T. or 16 per cent, of the total cost of these stopes. The tonnage for shovelers from all stoping was 9.3 T. per man, and for topslicing 8.2 T. per man. These stopes were not unduly hot, and there was not more than the usual amount of timber to interfere with the work of the men. The tonnages obtained per shoveler were considered low; first, because of a poor grade of Mexican labor, many of the men having come in from railroad grading camps; and second, because of a poor spacing of raises, especially in the top-slice stopes, where, in general, they were spaced 25 ft. by 66 ft. (7.6 by 20.1 m.) centers. The average wage per laborer shift was $2.67 during the year. It was thought, however, that even under these conditions the men were not producing the tonnage that they should, so, with the consent of the management, the writer undertook to determine how the general efficiency of the underground shoveling could be improved. No predetermined plan for conducting these experiments was arranged because we had no definite ideas as to the scope of the work or the number of elements into which the investigation would resolve itself, before all of its phases could be determined. We were sure, however, that any work that would thoroughly cover the ground would have to be in the nature of a systematic time study, combined with a course of instruction in correct shoveling methods and adequate and intelligent supervision of the work. Two or three companies in the Southwest have done some work to determine the proper shovel to be used undcrground, but so far as is known the work has been limited to equipping certain parts of their mines with a particular type and size of shovel and thereafter watching the cost and efficiency records. In each case it seems to have been the shovel that held the 21-lb. (9.5-kg.) load that gave the bcst results. Excepting personal communications from these companies, the only data available on scientific shoveling are contained in F. W. Taylor's book, "The Principles of Scientific Management," and D. J. Haucr's article, in The Contractor for March 29, 1918, "A Hundred Hints for Shovelers." This paper discusses and draws conclusions from several thousand time-study readings, taken both on the surface and in the mines for nearly a year. A sufficient number of readings were taken on each factor in the problem for the plotting of curves of the performances and to obtain accurate indices of the work to be expected from this class of labor. The work is not as complete in all of its details as we would like to havc it, because we were forced to stop the work temporarily, owing to the numbcr of men going into the National service and our inability to get others who could make time studies. The results obtained so far, however, have been of such a startling nature that we have decided to submit them at this time, subject to future modification. It is hoped, also, that a free discussion of this paper will lead to a disclosure of any errors that may have becn embodied and offer some valuable suggestions for the conduct of future work.

It is not often that a mining district is discovered, opened up, exploited and developed into a rich producer within the space of three or four years. Not until the year 1903 was the existence of the rich cobalt-nickel arsenides and silver of Northern Ontario even suspected by the mining public. But it is worthy of record that Dr. W. G. Miller, the man who has done so much to develop sanely and honestly the mineral resources of Ontario, pointed out [ ] the possibilities of this region at least two years before the first discovery was made. . Dr. Miller, then Professor of Geology at the School of Mining, Kingston, Ont., referred in these words to the district: "It will be seen from what has been stated on preceding pages that the district examined contains as great a variety of rocks as probably any part of the Province of equal area . . . Over the last 80 years the conveyor belt has advanced from the troughed rubber belt to those with standard steel cable cores and those which can navigate curves or climb steep inclines. Now the latest generation of belt conveyors can claim hitherto unheard of capacities of 20,000 tph and single flight lengths well exceeding 16,000 feet. The stranded steel cable core belt is principally responsible for the spectacular improvement in load carrying ability of belt conveyors. The allowable working tension of these belts ranges from 2,500 lb per in. of belt width for 1/4 in. diam cable to 4,000 lb per in, for 3/8 in. diam cable. These ratings far exceed the 240 lb per in. per ply for rayon or nylon construction, and 30 lb per in. per ply for a lowcost cotton fabric.

It has been known for sometime that in an ionic lattice, such as that of Ag,S or FeO, the migration velocity of the anion may differ markedly from that of the cation, the cation being usually the more mobile. It has been shown, for example, that during the formation of silver sulphide tarnish on silver, the tarnish layer grows principally by the motion of silver cations through an essentially stationary silver sulphide lattice. Similarly, the growth of wüstite scale on iron proceeds principally by motion of iron ions, this being accomplished with the aid of vacant iron lattice sites into which the iron may readily move. Likewise investigations of solid solutions of various salts show that there is usually considerable difference in the mobility of the different cations. Measurements of the mobility of various metals in liquid mercury indicate that the various metals move at different rates relative to the mercury. In view of the foregoing it seems reasonable to suppose that when any single phase solution is acted upon by a field, the atoms of different elements respond in different ways; in particular, that the force arising from a particular concentration gradient in a binary alloy would cause the atoms of one component to move with a drift velocity which is in general different from that of the atoms of the other component. The recent experiments of Smigelskas and Kirkendall' support this viewpoint, since they found, in essence, that during diffusion in alpha brass zinc moves appreciably faster than copper. This was evidenced by the relative motion of inert molybdenum wires. Such a phenomenon is incompatible with the place interchange theory of diffdsion proposed by several authors, most recently by Bir-chenall and Mehl.2 This theory has, however, also been questioned3v4 for other reasons, principally because of the high energy required for direct atomic interchange. The rather large difference between self-diffusivity, as determined by tracer technique, and mutual diffusivity, as determined with the aid of another element at low concentration, might also be interpreted as favoring the above idea; however. Birchenall and Mehl have pointed out that there is another possible interpretation of this difference; this is discussed later. A rather interesting and pertinent observation was made by Schwartz, who noticed that tungsten lamp filaments, heated by direct current, commonly fail by necking down in the region at the temperature gradient near the positive end, with a concomitant swelling at the corresponding position near the negative end. He introduces considerable auxiliary evidence to show that this phenomenon is occasioned by the motion of tungsten cations which migrate in the high temperature region from the positive end toward the negative end. The mechanism of this migration is not clearly understood. If, however, this experimental evidence be accepted, we are forced to conclude that alloying elements in the tungsten may migrate by the same or a Similar mechanism, whatever it may be, at a greater Or lesser rate, thus giving rise

THE controlled amounts of phosphorus, arsenic, sulphur or selenium found in commercial coppers perform a variety of highly useful functions. Indeed, a large segment of modem copper technology is essentially dependent upon the presence of one or more of these elements. Consequently, the literature contains many references to their effects but the scope is broad and has been only partly covered. New data are presented herewith directed toward a better understanding of the basic behavior of these elements in copper, with particular emphasis on the composition range 0 to 0.05 per cent. These data are a part of a general program of research on the effects of impurities on the properties of oxygen-bearing and oxygen-free copper, other portions of which have been reported previously.1-2-3 Schematically, the behavior of individual elements is determined from measurements of conductivity and softening temperature,1, 2 and the binary alloys employed are synthesized from high-purity copper in order to eliminate interference from the effects of extraneous impurities. Alloys of selected composition were first prepared in the oxygen-free form by continuously casting the melts in the form of 3/8-in. diameter rod. Oxygen was added subsequently to portions of the alloys, either by remelting or by diffusion at 850°C. from a surface scale. Test wires were drawn one B. and S. number per pass, using four 30-min. 600°C. anneals at o.3125, 0.257, o.204 and o.162 in., and a final cold reduction of 95 per cent t0 0.081 in. Oxygen-bearing slugs made by remelting were hot-rolled to 5/16 in., drawn to 0.162 in., annealed for 30 min. at 600°C. and cold-drawn 95 per cent to 0.081inch. The alloys containing phosphorus, having been compounded very early in the program, were prepared in the form of 5/16-in. rod, and processed to wire with only the last three intermediate anneals listed above, all of these having been conducted in commercial nitrogen. In addition, the conductivity anneals on these alloys were also performed in the same atmosphere, and the small amount of oxygen present as an impurity in the gas resulted in some loss of accuracy at temperatures of 700° to 800°C., as will be shown later. Subsequently, the anneals for all oxygen-free alloys were conducted in hydrogen to prevent oxidation, and purified nitrogen was employed only for oxygen-bearing samples. All conductivity anneals were of one hour duration followed by a rapid quench in 10 per cent H2SO4. The classification and preparation of non-ferrous scrap mctals is a subject of interest to every individual and corporation that employs in its processes of manufacture non-ferrous metals and alloys and accurnulates in such manufacture scrap from these materials for disposition in the form of turnings, borings, short ends, punchings, clippings, grindings, washings, etc. All too frequently the disposition of such scrap is left to indivitluals who have no knowledge of the subject either from a metallurgical or a commercial standpoint, or both. Much money is thus lost whicli with a little more intelligent effort might be saved, and in this day of fierce competition and small profits such an opportunity cannot be ignored. The Mineral Resources of the United States for the year 1925, the latest issue available (Part 1, page 221), gives the secondary non-ferrous metals of certain classes recovered in the United States for the year 1924 to 1925 as shown in Table 1. The figures are tabulated simply to give the reader some idea of the scope of the secondary non-ferrous metal industry. Approximately 900,000 tons of an annual value of $244,000,000 were recovered in the year cited. In 1916 (again using thc Mineral Resources of the United States as authority) the tonnage reclaimed was approximately 632,000 tons and the value, because of the high prices for metals prevailing at that time, amounted to $265,000,000. It is not the purpose of this paper to discuss smelting and refining operations or the feasibility of an organization, primarily engaged in some other activity, conducting smelting and refining operations to convert its own non-ferrous scrap metals and alloys. The classification and preparation of these non-ferrous materials is a preliminary step, regardless of what subsequent operations the material may pass through or where these operations may be conducted. For that reason the subject can he readily discussed without any reference to subsequent activities. Space must be provided, with suitable handling facilities, scales and the necessary storage bins where the material may be accumulated. The scope of the activity, the nature of the industry and the tonnage handled will determine, in a large measure, what preparation, if any, it rrlay he desirable to give these scrap materials to put them in the best niarketable condition. ON behalf of the Regents and the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the National Museum; but it is to your own museum, since it belongs to you in common with all the people of the country. Still young in a life which has been beset with many difficulties, it has gathered strength and attained a growth quite unprecedented. In fact, it is this very growth which has been the chief cause of trouble, always leading far and away beyond the capacity for storage ; and to-day there is nearly as much material contained in outside buildings as is displayed in this one. You will, accordingly, find the collections crowded, the cases so close together that their contents are often difficult to view, and the arrangement generally lacking symmetry. You may, therefore, be inclined to regard us as poor custodians of the collections of a great nation, but I beg you to withhold your judgment for a while. From the beginning there has been abundant zeal and activity and a proper direction of affairs, but space and money have been lacking. There is now a prospect of better times. All about you here is a beautiful park, but without. a covering it is not adapted to museum purposes. Upon it, however, a new large building is going up, so extensive in its dimensions that technology can soon be given a fitting home, thus realizing one of the earliest aspirations of the Regents. Some sixty-five years ago the extensive returns of specimens from the famous Wilkes Exploring Expedition around the world began to reach Washington, where they were deposited in the Patent Office Building, and formed practically the first of the National Collections. In the death of Major A. B. desaulles at South Bethlehem, Pa., on Dec. 24, 1917, the Institute lost a valued and esteemed member, one of the last few of those who, in May, 1871, at Wilkes-Barre, attended the first meeting of the Institute, in response to a call that had been issued by R. P. Rothwell, Eckley B. Coxe, and Martin Coryell. Major desaulles was born Jan. 8, 1840, at New Orleans, and was the son of Louis and Armidc Longer desaulles, each of French descent. As a boy he was privately tutored in the South, and then schooled in New England to enter the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he was graduated with honors in the class of '59. Following his graduation he studied in France and Germany for two years, returning to New Orleans in 1861 to enter the Confederate Army, in which he served with distinction as an engineer throughout the Civil War, rising to the rank of Major and the command of his Corps. After the close of the war he pursued his studies abroad for another year, returning to New York in April, 1866, when he became engineer for the New York & Schuylkill Coal Company, and remained at its plant near Wilkes-Barre until October, 1871, when it was sold to the Philadelphia & Reading Coal and Iron Company. He then returned to New York where for several years he was engaged in the practice of his profession. In 1869, he married Catharine M. Heckscher, daughter of Charles Heckscher of New York City. Mrs. desaulles survives him. In 1876, Major desaulles became superintendent of the Dunbar Furnace Company in Fayette County, Pa., with which company he remained until 1883. As a feature of the Pittsburgh meeting in May, 1879, Major and Mrs. desaulles entertained the members of the Institute at dinner at Dunbar on the occasion of the Institute's visit to Dun-bar furnace. In 1883, he took up the formation of the Oliphant Furnace Company in that county, of which he became and remained the head for five years. He was then called to the superintendency of the New Jersey Zinc Company at South Bethlehem, Pa., in which position he remained until his retirement,from active service in 1911, maintaining, however, hi.; keen interest in the metallurgy and smelting of zinc, in collaboration with his son Charles, a member of the Institute and a Director of the American Smelting and Refining Company. From 1888, until his death, he resided in South Bethlehem, a prominent and highly respected citizen of that progressive and stirring community. Major desaulles was a member of the Protestant Espicopal Church, and at the time of his death was a vestryman of the Church of the Nativity at South Bethlehem. He was president of the Men's Club of the Church of the Nativity. His kindly nature led him to take an active interest in the promotion of healthful sports among young men. He was ever active in all things pertaining to the general welfare and uplift of his fellowmen. In his death the profession has lost a distinguished engineer and mctallurgist and our country a patriotic able citi-zen and man of affairs—one greatly beloved by those whom he honored with his friendship, and respected and looked up to by all who were privileged to know him.

Lime has become a general and loosely used term to denote almost any kind of calcareous material or finely divided form of limestone or dolomite, as well as burned forms of lime. However, according to Webster, lime is only calcined limestone (known as quicklime, unslaked lime, or calcium oxide). It also embraces the secondary product of quicklime, i.e., hydrated lime or slaked lime (calcium hydroxide). There are two basic types of limestone used for lime manufacture-high calcium and high magnesium (dolomitic). The dolomitic quicklimes and hydrated limes correspond to their "high calcium" counterparts. The only difference is that the dolomitic types are a combination of the elements calcium and magnesium, in varying percents, whereas high calicum limes contain less than 5% MgO down to 1/2%. In either case a pure form of limestone of at least 97% combined carbonate content is needed to make salable lime, barring a few exceptions. The calcination of both types is diagrammed chemically as follows: [ ] In the foregoing reversible reactions the limestone is burned (calcined) in lime kilns, with the carbon dioxide content of the stone expelled as a gas. The weight loss during calcination of pure high calcium limestone is 44%; with equimolecular dolomitic limestone, the weight loss is 48%. Since lime has a strong affinity for CO_, particularly if moisture is present, it will readily revert to its original carbonate form. This occurs when quicklime "air-slakes" and adsorbs CO.. from the air. Thus, quicklime is perishable and should be stored in dry, water-tight areas. Depending upon the type of kiln used and the physical structure of the stone, the size of the quicklime may range from sandlike granules to 8 in. lumps. However, pebble sizes ranging from 1/4 in. to 2 in. are the most common. Screened quicklime fines are also com¬pressed (pelletized) into 1 in. pellets. For some purposes ground or pulverized forms of quicklime are used, ranging from No. 10 mesh to dust. Generally a pebble of quicklime is about the same size as the pebble of limestone before calcination (perhaps shrinking slightly). A more stable form of lime is hydrated lime. This is obtained by adding water to quicklime, slaking it into a dry, fine, subsieve size white powder. Because its affinity for moisture has been satisfied, it is not vulnerable to further moisture like quicklime. However, it has the same strong affinity for CO_. The following reversible chemical reactions illustrate how hydrated lime when heated (or dehydrated) can revert to the original oxide form:

With the inauguration of Petroleum Technology this year, and approval by the Board to add an Assistant Secretary to the New York staff to serve the Petroleum and Coal Divisions, the Petroleum Division looks forward to greater opportunities and responsibilities. An improved medium of publication offers further incentive to engineers and investigators in the oil industry to make contributions. The authorization by the Board of Directors of a new Assistant Secretary is an appreciation of the splendid contributions made to the industry by the open forum of the Petroleum Division. It is also a recognition of the possibilities of greater service to the membership along the lines established ten to fifteen years ago by DeGolyer, Fohs, Ambrose and Lovejoy, to mention a few leaders. It isexpected that the new officer will spend a substantial part of his time in the field, visiting the student sections, the respective Divisions, helping in the arrangement of papers and Section meetings and intensifying interest in the Institute. The Petroleum Division will hold three meetings this year. The Fall Meetings will be held on Oct. 6 and 7 in San Antonio and on Oct. 20 and 21 in Los Angeles. The programs for these meetings will deal chiefly with engineering research and production engineering problems. Papers on production statistics and general economics of the industry are reserved for the Annual Meeting in New York. The annual production symposium and statistics are accepted as standard for the industry. With continuously deeper penetration into the earth in search for and exploitation of petroleum, it is necessary to have a better understanding of reservoir conditions and to place more phases of the operation under engineering control. Among the subjects relating to reservoir conditions tha thave been proposed for the fall meeting programs are phase equilibria at high pressures, interfacial tension between oil and water, the flow of oil and water through sands, the chemistry of films and underground temperatures. Investigations relating to control of operations include methods of continuously logging while drilling both visually and electrically, methods of studying drilling samples, properties of drilling fluids, improved cementing practices for isolating thin sands under high-temperature conditions and gas conservation, particularly production from high-pressure reservoirs. Additional suggestions of general themes or individual subjects will be welcomed, since it is desirable to build a backlog of material for Petroleum Technology. 9
