NATURAL petroleum gas occurring in the oil-bearing reservoirs is found to exist either as free gas associated with the oil and/or in solution in the oil. In some virgin fields practically no free gas is encountered under the reservoir conditions of pressure and temperature, although in other fields a considerable section of the ``pay" horizon is occupied by free gas. In other words, a given oil field may or may not have a gas cap before the exploitation takes place. However, when the reservoir pressure is reduced to a point below the critical saturation pressure by withdrawals of fluids from the producing formation, the gas dissolved in the oil inevitably begins to come out of solution and becomes free gas. Under the con-trolled methods of production and drilling, a portion of this gas is pro-duced with the oil to the surface and a portion of it remains within the reservoir to accumulate at higher structural levels toward which it migrates by virtue of its low specific gravity. The rate of growth of a gas cap in a-given structure depends primarily upon the rate of decline in the reservoir pressure. If the rate of pressure decline is rapid, the gas cap likewise will grog rapidly. On the other hand, shrinkage in the gas-cap area was noted in some fields in which reservoir pressures were increasing.

SOME days ago a visiting member from Pittsburgh who is an ardent supporter of the Institute remarked: "There are a lot of men who would be members of the Institute if it weren't so expensive. It is not so much the $15 dues as the $20 initiation fee. This makes quite a hurdle, especially for the younger fellows." A little further conversation developed the fact that the member had never learned of the changes in the By-laws regarding initiation fees and dues made by unanimous vote of the Board of Directors last November. As a great many others doubtless are unaware of these changes, the substance of two of the amendments is here repeated. They provide: (1) That the initiation fee for Junior Members (heretofore ten dollars) he abolished. (2) That the age limit for entrance as a Junior Member be increased from 27 years to 33; provided further, that the period during which the dues of a Junior Member are ten dollars shall be a maximum of six years but in no event shall extend beyond his thirty-third birthday. The Junior Member gets the identical privileges enjoyed by his seniors and he likewise assumes the same obligations with the sole exception of the financial payments. This one exception is justified by the fact that the engineers of more mature years, who are established in the profession, - are able and willing to assume a slightly greater financial burden. In effect, it is a small subsidy for the younger men; but these in turn will later enter the group of those that give instead of receive assistance. The practical result is that an engineer under 27 can obtain every privilege and benefit of membership for six years on the payment of only $10 per year without any initiation fee. A man of thirty can do the same for a period of three years. Incidentally, a candidate applying for membership (either as senior or junior) in the next few months need pay dues for the second half of 1935 only. A Junior Member -can be enrolled with an immediate outlay of only $5. The Institute does not seek-members indiscriminately merely to swell the number. These facts are not presented as a "bargain" offer in any sense. The standards for admission are high and are watched zealously. But it frankly-wants to give qualified men who can benefit from membership every encouragement to apply. Naturally, the Institute does not want lack of accurate information regarding initiation fees and -dues to be a stumbling block to any that are eligible and desirous of enrolling. Members are urged to take it upon themselves to clear up misapprehensions on this point, particularly among younger engineers.-Editorial reprinted from MINING AND METALLURGY, May, 1935.

This paper considers, from an engineering viewpoint, several factors involved in creating, designing and locating horizontal barriers for controlling water coning. This is an effort to consolidate new concepts with previous information so that a reasonable selection of barrier materials, dimensions and vertical position can be made. Coning theories previously developed are briefly reviewed and an effort i,s made to reduce the results of coning-theory calculations to a point where routine calculations can be made with a desk calculator. It is expected that these simplified calculations will give usable predictions of the amounts of improvement attainable with barriers of various dimensions. Apparatus and procedures used for testing the suitability of commercial cements are described and test results are presented. INTRODUCTION Just about as soon as the phenomenon of water coning was recognized as an oilfield problem, there were suggestions that the production of water coning could be controlled or completely suppressed by means of horizontal barriers. It was also suggested that natural barriers such as shale streaks were helpful in restricting bottom-water production. The implication was that wells not having the benefit of continuous shale streaks to suppress bottom waters should, in some way, be supplied with an artificial barrier. With regard to the selection of barrier materials, there are many references which give the merits of liquid barriers.',' These liquids include surface-active agents," recipitates' and emu1sions. There is no real need to review the merits of these materials again. This paper deals with the use of solid barriers which could be made from various cements. The two major restrictions placed on these barrier cements are that (1) they must be commercially available in large quantities, and (2) they must be applicable by means of standard tools and equipment with techniques that have been fully developed and are in general use at the present time. A schematic drawing of a horizontal barrier in a reservoir is shown in Fig. 1. Two maximum stable water cones are illustrated-—-one for the wellbore diameter and the other for a barrier. A maximum stable cone is one that has attained its maximum volume at the critical production rate and is on the threshold of producing water. The volume displaced by each water cone and the rise in water table are indications of the amount of water-free oil produced. Corrections for porosity, connate water and residual oil, of course, must be applied. The water-oil interface which defines a maximum stable cone is called a free surface. It is a surface over which the pressure is constant. This free surface has the shape of a limiting streamline at and below which there is no movement or transport. The shape of the water cone describes the pressure drop in the reservoir. The effect of a completely impermeable barrier on the cone shape is essentially the same as extending the wellbore out to the barrier radius. The placement of a horizontal barrier requires that a horizontal fracture be created using a single-point entry technique. Two methods may be employed for filling this fracture. One method consists of propping the fracture before filling with cement. The other consists of fracturing with fracture fluid, then immediately following with cement

Axial tensile, ring tensile, closed end burst, and free end burst tests were done at room tempe.vature and 300°C on three batches of Zircaloy-2 sheathing zuith different textures. Knoop hardness tests were also done on all batches. The mechanical properties of the tubes were largely dependent on the percentages of cold work, but were also markedly affected by the textures, particularly with respect to deformation behavio'r. The deformation behavior observed confirmed Picklesimer's predictions, zuhereas Knoop hardness results could be correlated with texture and yield strength anisotropy after the ,method of Wheeler and Ireland. From the mechanical properties, and from efjectiue strain values deterrlzined at the fractures using a photoqid technique, it zuas concluded that tubing witlz a single preferred orientation of radial basal poles best combines strength and ductility for any given deqee of cold work. THE mechanical properties required in collapsible Zircaloy-2 fuel sheathing for water-cooled power reactors are strength to resist wrinkling deformation by coolant pressure and ductility to accommodate a small amount of deformation in service without rupturing. Zircaloy-2 tubing during fabrication develops pre- ferred orientations of the a Zr grains due to aniso-tropic deformation behavior, and these textures markedly affect mechanical properties. Picklesimer' had predicted the deformation behavior of tubes with various textures, but the texture required to provide the optimum strength and ductility for a given degree of cold work has not been reported. To investigate this problem, tests at three transverse to axial stress ratios were done at room temperature and 300°C on three batches of Zircaloy-2 tubing covering a wide range of textures and percentages of residual cold work. Knoop hardness values were also measured to correlate with preferred orientation and yield strength anisotropy after the method of Wheeler and relland.' 1) MATERIAL For this investigation, three batches of tube-reduced tubing were chosen from the Zircaloy-2 sheathing produced for the Douglas Point Reactor. Individual tubes were 191/2 in. long, 0.600 in. OD, and 0.0165 in. nominal wall thickness. The identities of the batches, together with their textures, are shown in Table I. The tubes had the normal Zircaloy-2 composition3 of 1.5 wt pct Sn, 0.3 wt pct Fe, Ni, Cr combined with the following oxygen concentrations: Batch VII 1140 to 1390 ppm 0 Batch VIII 1400 to 1750 ppm 0 Batch IX 880 to 1320 ppm 0

A comparative study has been made of the ex-tractability of several of the transitim metals from thiocyanate sohtions using methyl isobutyl ketone as the organic solvent. Extractions were made of scandium (III), chromium (III), manganese (II), iron (III), and cobalt (II), of which only the scandium , iron, and cobalt were readily extracted. All extractions were made at pH 2 and at 25.5 °C. A series of extraction experiments was made on scandium, iron, and cobalt to determine the effect of thiocyanate cmcentration added as the ammonium and also as the calcium salt. Also determined was the effect of metal ion concentratim and ionic strength on the distribution ratio. Analyses of the organic extracts indicated the scandium and iron were extracted principally in the uncharged trithiocyanate form, while the extractable form of the cobalt contained the cobaltotetrathiocyanate anion. THE chemical separation of metal complexes in solution by solvent extraction has in recent years been developed for large scale separation as well as bench scale work in the laboratory. It has also found increased application in analytical chemistry. Its extension to extractive metallurgy as a unit operation is best illustrated in the recovery of uranium and vanadium from their leached liquor.5-8 The extractability of some thiocyanate systems have been extensively investigated. The rate earths have been separated from one another using butanol as a olvent. Scandium was effectively extracted in ethyl ether using ammonium thiocyanate as the com-plexing agent.'' Similarly, the separation of hafnium from zirconium has been reported using ether""' or hexone13 as the organic solvent. The extractability of various metal thiocyanates in ethyl ether is given by 0ck.l Sharp and Wilkinson15 prepared nickel-free cobalt slats by thiocyanate extraction. The mechanism of extraction of titanium (IV) thiocyanate with methyl isobutyl ketone was determined by elafosse.''" The characterization of cobalt (TI) thiocyanate complex using methyl isobutyl ketone as the solvent at near neutral aqueous solution and the spectrometric studies of the ex-tractable cobalt complex has been made by Hard." It is noteworthy to mention at this point that the fundamental characteristic of ketone (oxonium) solvent extraction is that the extractable species are uncharged ion pairs solvated by the ketone molecules, but probably still partially hydrated.

IDO not want to omit anything in which fire or its operation has a part, if I know or can tell it, and have already told you so many other useful, powerful, and ingenious effects (finally of powder and other' fire deadly and very injurious to all living things, indeed, composed for the destruction of those who possess it as well as those who do not) but I do not want the end of my writing to be in tragedy. Therefore I wished to tell you how, from these fires composed of forceful and horrible mate¬rials bringing harm and terror to men, a happy and pleasing effect is also produced and, instead of fleeing from it, the people willingly go to see it. Among others I remember that it was once customary to use these in Florence and in Siena, more than elsewhere. The chief feast day celebrated. by one of these cities is the day of the birth of Saint John, and the other is the Assumption of Our Lady, on the fifteenth of the month of August. In the morning they visit the shrines with great devotion and solemnity, displaying their pomp as much as possible, and later they hunt lions, wild bulls, untamed horses, and many other animals. In the same public squares there was also erected as a decoration an edifice fixed in the ground in the middle of this space, or hanging from a heavy rope crossing between the loftiest points of equal height that could be found in that place. This they have done and still do, and perhaps in time to come will continue to do when opportune. This structure was usually of wood; indeed it is necessary that the latticework of its construction be made only of this. It was covered and en¬larged by tying and fastening hay on top to bring it almost to completion and then papier-mâché was applied. [165v] The figures were first appropriately painted and made of a combination of vessels one above the other, developing various decorative figures in relief which should represent some fable or history and should not appear haphazardly made or without understanding. TANTALUM metal has a number of unique properties which give it widespread application in modern technology and in research. In electronic apparatus involving high temperatures in vacuo some of the refractory metals become brittle. Tantalum retains its ductility at elevated temperatures, and this property, together with its low vapor pressure and its ability to absorb gases, make it important in this field. Its chemical inertness in the presence of acids, halogens, and other corrosive media, makes it useful in chemical apparatus and in neuro and orthopedic surgical applications. As an addition to tungsten carbide in steel-cutting grades of cemented-carbide tools, the carbides of tantalum and of its sister element columbium have found considerable use. The present-day method1 of manufacturing tantalum is to sinter a powder compact of the metal in vacuo. Because tantalum- columbium alloys are difficult to work and since tantalum ores almost always contain columbium, the two metals must be separated chemically, the products of the separation being generally in the form of potassium tantalum fluoride and potassium columbium oxyfluoride. These salts are used in fused-salt electrolytic baths from which coarse metallic powder is deposited as a sponge at the cathode. Finer powder can be made from the coarse product or from tantalum scrap by first submitting it to an embrittling heat treatment in hydrogen and then crushing it. The fine hydrogen- containing powder may subsequently be degassed in vacuo at a high temperature. Prompted by the success of others2,3 in the magnesium reduction of titanium and zirconium halides, one of the authors under- took4 an investigation of the thermo- chemistry of the reaction between solid magnesium and gaseous tantalum penta-chloride, a subject which had not previously been studied. He found that the heat of formation of tantalum pentachloride is approximately 364,250 cal per mol at temperatures lower than the melting point of magnesium. A value of 83 units was found for the standard entropy at these temperatures. With these values, it was shown that magnesium and tantalum pentachloride are capable of reacting exothermically at temperatures less than the melting point of magnesium, and that no great violence is to be expected when these substances are heated together. The exothermic nature of the reaction indicated that the process should be efficient and should not require much externally applied energy. Tantalum pentachloride is not commonlv made commercially, and any process using it therefore involves the subsidiary problem of producing and handling this substance. Phase equilibria of the zinc-rich portion of the Zn-Fe-A1 system containing up to 20.0 wt pct Fe and Al have been investigated at 600°C (1112°F), 450°C (842°F), and room temperature by metallographic and X-ray diffraction techniques. The phase relationships were found to involve only those phases present in the three binary systems. THE presence of small quantities of aluminum (approx. 0.2 wt pct*) in zinc galvanizing baths is known to suppress the formation of Zn-Fe alloy layers within the coating.' As part of an extended investigation of this suppression effect and the alloy reactions involved, the zinc-rich corner of the Zn-Fe-A1 equilibrium system containing up to 20.0 pct Fe and Al was determined at 600°C (1112°F), 450° F (842° F), and room temperature. The present paper reports the findings of this study. The constitution of the Zn-Fe system has been reported by Raynor2 based mainly on the work of Schramm3-3 and Truesdale et a1.6 The solid solubility of iron in zinc is extremely small and lies between 0.0009 and 0.0028 pct in the range 150° to 400°C (302°to752°F). Within the temperature and composition range of interest, a eutectic reaction involving nearly pure zinc, liquid = Zn+FeZn13, is observed at about 419°C (786° F) and 0.018 pct Fe along with a peritectic reaction, FeZn7+ liquid e FeZn13, at 530°C (986° F) and 6.2 pct Fe. The latter reaction is sluggish due to the large proportipn of solid phase involved in the transformation. Halla et al.,7 identified the compound FeZn13 as monoclinic with a = 13.68, b = 7.63, c = 5.07, and B = 128°44'. The structure of FeZn7 was reported by Bablik, et al.,8 to be of hexagonal symmetry, belonging to either the C6v = C6/m mc or D46h = C6/mc space group. Divensions of the unit cell are a = 12.81A and c = 57.6a. The Zn-A1 diagram as composed by Raynor9 and later Gebhardt10 is characterized by a eutectic decomposition, liquid 382°C (720°F) and 95.0 pct Zn and a eutectoid decomposition, at 275° (527°F) and 78.0 pct Zn. The eutectoid reaction cannot be suppressed permanently by quenching. Above 275° (527° F), a and a' co-exist in a closed miscibility gap between 31.6 and 78.0 pct Zn. Both phases are fcc and have nearly the same lattice parameter. The maximum solubility of aluminum in zinc (B) is approximately 1.0 pct at the eutectic temperature. PROCEDURE Materials. The experimental alloys were prepared from both massive and powdered material. Cast alloys were composed from three zinc-base master alloys containing 8.0 pct Fe, 16.0 pct Fe, and 50.0 pct Al which were made from C.P. zinc, Armco iron, and

The self-diffusion coefficient of pure lead has been measured at five pressures between atmospheric and 40 kb. over a temperature range of about 150°C near the melting point at each pressure. Measurements were made using a radiotracer technique, samples being sectioned electrochemically after the diffusion anneal to determine the diffusion penetration curve. Pressure was applied in a "belt" type pressure device similar to that used by Hall et al., in the diamond synthesis. The self-diffusion coefficient, D, can be represented by an equation of the form at constant pressure, and an equation of the format constant temperature. An apparent correlation between the effects of pressure on self-diffusion and on the melting point of the material observed by Nachtrieb et al., at pressures below 10 kb. was found to be only approximate as measurements are carried to higher pressures. OVER the course of the past 30 years a large number of studies1-' of the rate of atom movements in solid metals have been carried out. These studies have in general been aimed at increasing the understanding of the detailed atomic process by which atom movements in metals can take place. The largest portion of these studies consisted of measurements of the self-diffusion coefficient, D, as a function of temperature. From such studies con- siderable information regarding the energetics of the motive process has been deduced. Recently such measurements have been extended to the pressure dimension. However, the existing work in this area is scanty and has in the past been limited to the pressures attainable in oil or gas bombs—i.e., up to about 10 kilobars (kb). In the present work, the self-diffusion behavior of pure lead has been investigated using the "belt" type high-pressure apparatus designed by Hall7 over a pressure range from atmospheric to 40 kb at temperatures extending over about a 150°C range close to the melting point at each pressure.

A tentative plan for the Colorado Meeting has been formulated as follows: One day will be spent at Denver, one day at Colorado Springs, one day at Cripple Creek, a trip by automobile to the top of Pike's Peak, one day at Pueblo, one day at Leadville. All the principal mines and mills of the districts mentioned will be visited, including the gold mines in Cripple Creek, the lead, zinc, and steel works. of Pueblo, the production of ferro-molybdenum by electric furnace at Leadville, etc. Special arrangements are being made for the social entertainment of ladies at all points; one evening at Colorado Springs will be devoted to a reception and dance, and the usual dinner will he given on another evening. AN isopachous map is one on which lines connect points of equal thickness of a given unit. This type of map is used by the Florida Phosphate Project of the U. S. Geological Survey to represent the economic phosphate deposits known as matrix and the waste material, or overburden, that overlies the matrix. The top of the bed on which the phosphate was deposited is known as the basement and a subsurface contour map of this old buried erosion surface is known as a basement map. Recent experiments have been made in preparing maps that show tonnages and grades of the phosphate content of the matrix. Few of the operating companies in the Florida phosphate district have applied isopachous (Greek isos, equal and pachys, thick) to mapping. The writer believes there is a need for the techniques discussed herein and that they can be applied to mapping other geologically similar areas in either economic or scientific investigations. The land-pebble phosphate district of Florida occupies a compact area in the west-central part of the state. It includes mainly the following land survey divisions: Ts. 27 S. through 32 S. and Rs. 20 E. through 26 E. The town of Mulberry, Fla., is in the approximate center of the district. The strata of the area, which is part of the Gulf Coastal Plain, occur in thin formations with broad outcrop belts, and low dips. The topography is subdued and gently rolling with three marine terraces, which are found at 30, 100, and 150 ft above sea level,' accounting for most of the relief. Occasional small sinkhole lakes are present, most of them above the 150-ft shoreline. The phosphate deposits occur in unconsolidated sediments such as clays, sands, and sandy clays. They are overlain by a heterogeneous assemblage of sands, clays, muck, and iron-cemented sand, easily penetrated, in most cases, by a hand auger or drill. Limestone, locally called bedrock, or a calcareous bedclay, thought to be a residue of the limestone, directly underlies the phosphate deposits. General Requirements Most companies and independent prospectors operating in the district have furnished prospecting data to the U. S. Geological Survey. The information is recorded on either field logs or prospecting maps and includes the following information for each hole drilled: location of the hole, thickness of the overburden, thickness of the matrix, phosphate content in long tons per acre, grade of the phosphate content expressed as the percentage of bone phosphate of lime (P2O5 x 2.18) or BPL, and the per- centages of iron-aluminum oxides and insolubles. The phosphate is classified according to size as either pebble or flotation material. The milling processes of the companies vary, and the size classification is necessarily different in many cases. However, pebble may be considered as larger than 14 mesh and flotation material as smaller than 14, but larger than 150 mesh. Some prospecting data include the exact depth at which bedrock or bedclay was reached, and these figures greatly increase the reliability of the data both for isopachous mapping and for mapping the basement. A drilling density of four holes per 40 acres of land furnishes a minimum amount of data for isopachous and related mapping. From the minimum of four, densities up to 32 holes per 40 acres are used. The various drilling densities may influence the choice of the proper scale. Selection of the proper scale is dependent upon the known drilling densities, the subsurface variations to be shown, the extent of the area to be mapped, and the detail desired in the completed map. Scales of 1:24,000, 1:4800, and 1:2400 are used in isopachous and related mapping by the Florida Phosphate Project. The 1:24,000 scale is used most effectively with drilling densities not exceeding eight holes per 40 acres. The subsurface variations should be relatively low and uniform, permitting the use of smaller intervals without undue crowding of the lines. Comparatively large areas can be mapped on this scale, but minute detail is necessarily sacrificed, because the information is drawn from a maximum drilling density of only eight holes per 40 acres. Isopachous and related maps of the 1:4800 scale are made of areas on which the drilling information covers from 4 to 16 holes per 40 acres. Moderate subsurface variations with relatively sharp gradations can be shown accurately. The area represented by the maps is reduced considerably in favor of detail. The 1:2400 scale is most frequently used by the Florida Phosphate Project. It lends itself particularly well to isopachous and related mapping, being easily adapted to the multiform drilling data available. The variation of point of zero charge (PZC) of both simple and complex oxide minerals was studied as a function of aging time in water. In most cases the PZC's of the simple oxides moved toward more basic pH values with aging time. Evidence to date suggests that this phenomenon relates to dissolution of disturbed layers on the mineral's surface accompanied by later readsorption of metal hydroxy species back onto these surfaces. The readsorption takes place after the solution becomes supersaturated with respect to some crystalline phase. The variation of PZC's of complex oxides as a function of aging time in water is apparently related to several different mechanisms. In a few cases PZC shifted toward more basic values with time. This shift could be attributed to much the same mechanism as for simple oxides. In most cases, however, PZC of complex oxides shifted toward more acid values with aging time, probably because of loss to solution of soluble cations whose oxides possess basic PZC's.

INTRODUCTION. NOTWITHSTANDING the growing importance of this subject, no work specially devoted to it has hitherto been published. Having had to inspect during the last twenty years nearly a million tons of iron and steel rails for various countries, I have obtained experience of what rail manufacturers can practically execute, as well as of what railway engineers practically require. Bearing these two points in mind, I have from time to time published observations with a view to unite both interests, -that of the producer and that of the consumer,-and to reduce the specifications and the forms of sections to standards, or types, in order to facilitate the execution of the works and to improve the construction of permanent way. The Swedish government railways, as well as private companies owning railways in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark, have during the time above mentioned consulted with me and intrusted to me their rail inspection. I therefore owe to these countries much of the opportunity which I have enjoyed of gaining experience and position. Next to Sweden, America is the country which has most liberally favored me with its confidence in placing these matters in my hands. Through circumstances not under my control there has been little exportation to, and less work done by Europe for, America during the last six years ; but the recent revival of the rail trade has been the more gratifying to me, seeing that almost all the importers of American rails are still specifying for the Sandberg rail sections and inspection. A discussion of the various factors affecting the accuracy of volume fraction determination by the direct comparison X-ray diffraction method is presented. To minimize errors introduced by nonrandomization effects such as preferred orientation and large grain size, as well as errors introduced by statistical effects, an iterative mathematical analysis is introduced. This analysis is applied to all observable diffractio~ spectra from a given specimen by means of computer techniques and is statistically superior to the standard direct comparison technique which utilizes only one or tm sets of intensity spectra. The computer program also presents a graphical interpretation of- the results which enables the investigator to visualize and readily assess the scatter in volume fraction estimates caused by deviations from randomness. Finally, the iterative analysis is applied to experimental data collected from a series of plain carbon steels in both the as-received and spheroidized conditions to determine the volume fraction of cemen-tite present in each case. The results show markedly good agreement with chemical analyses for all spheroidized specimens. In theory, quantitative X-ray diffraction is a power-ful analytical technique for precise determination of the volume fractions of various phases present in a multiphase poly crystalline aggregate. There are two generally used methods; both utilize the fact that the intensity of a diffraction line of a particular phase is a function of volume fraction of that phase present in the aggregate. The more common method is the so-called internal standard technique where a known amount of standard substance is mixed with the aggregate containing the unknown. The resulting ratio of the intensity of a particular diffraction line of the unknown to the intensity of a diffraction line from the standard is used to find the weight fraction of unknown material by reference to the intensity data obtained from a previously prepared set of standards containing the same amount of standard material. The details of this technique are outlined in standard works on X-ray diffraction.' The disadvantages of the technique are that it requires the use of powder specimens and that the powder mixture must be homogeneous near the surface to the maximum effective beam depth. The alternative technique is the direct comparison method in which the ratio of the intensity of a diffraction line of a phase in the aggregate to the intensity of a second-phase diffraction line yields the ratio of the volume fractions of each phase present. This method has been applied most extensively to the determination of the percentage of retained austenite in martensitic steels and to determining the amounts of hcp and fcc allotropic modifications in pure cobalt5 and the amounts of hexagonal and rhombohedra1 modifications in graphite.8 This method is applicable to bulk as well as powder aggregates and is the technique which will be considered in the following text. It is the purpose of the present communication to show that by combining the results of X-ray diffrac-tometry with the use of high-speed digital computers the results of the direct comparison quantitative X-ray analysis technique can be optimized by using all of the data available on a diffraction pattern. THEORETICAL DISCUSSION In optimizing any quantitative X-ray diffraction experiment, the problem of accuracy vs time to collect and analyze the experimental data arises. For any method to be practical, it is required that both experimental and analytical procedures are reasonably short. In most of the previous work performed by the direct comparison method, intensity data from only one or two sets of peaks were used to calculate the volume fraction of phases present in the aggregate. Consequently, rather long-time experimental measurements are required to assure that the intensity data are sufficiently accurate to justify the use of one or two sets of data. By using computer techniques to analyze the experimental data it becomes feasible to use all of the available data on a diffraction pattern. By so doing, the time spent in measuring any one diffraction maxima can be appreciably reduced. Although this results in poor counting statistics for any one maxima, the number of data points available for analysis is greatly increased. Based on the above discussion, it will be assumed that a continuous scanning counter-diffractometer technique will be used to collect intensity data from a two-phase mixture. The integrated intensity of the ith diffraction line from the a phase in the aggregate is given by:'" where is the volume fraction of the a phase, The various quantities in Eq. [la] are angular independent while those in [lb] depend on the hkl spectrum of a particular phase. The meaning of the individual quantities in Eqs. [la] and [lb] are given in Appendix 1. It is convenient at this point to outline briefly the factors which will affect the measured intensity of any one hkl spectrum. a) Extinction effects arise from two independent experimental conditions. An equation is derived relating AF a", the difference in free energy between austenite and martensite, to temperature and composition in the iron-chrmnium and iron-chromium -nickel systems. This equation is used to calculate at M,for low-carbon stainless steels. A method for utilizing the energetic equations to calculate M, in stainless steels is suggested. In addition, an explanation is given for the anomalous effect of chromium in forming a y loop concurrent with the lowering of M, in iron-base alloys. It has been demonstrated that the effect of alloying elements on the Ms temperature is strongly dependent upon the influence of the alloying element on the thermodynamic properties of the y and a phases. Notwithstanding the fact that alloying elements affect the Ms temperature by changing the lattice parameters, elastic constants, and inter-facial energies of the a and y phases, their primary role is a thermodynamic one. Thermodynamic analyses have been presented for the iron-carbon'-4 and iron-nickele systems in which equations are derived for Fa and FY, the free energies of the b.c.c. (or b.c.t.) and f.c.c. phases. These equations, which can be obtained with the aid of the equilibrium diagrams, can be used to help predict the Ms vs composition curves. This paper deals with a calculation of the thermodynamic properties necessary to compute AFffLY for iron-chromium alloys. In view of the lack of direct information concerning the activity of chromium in the a and y phases of iron, the regular solution approximationa,g was utilized to bridge the gap. After the necessary equations were derived for the iron-chromium system they were used to calculate AFff— Y for stainless steels by combining them with the previous results obtained for iron-nickel alloys. The results of these calculations offer a means of rationalizing the anomalous behavior of chromium in iron-base alloys. The latter depends on the regular solution approximation in contrast to the explanation offered by zener , which is based upon the "magnetic specific heat effect." THERMODYNAMICS OF THE IRON-CHROMIUM SYSTEM If y represents the atomic fraction of chromium in an iron-chromium alloy, then the free energy of the b.c.c. phase Fa, the f.c.c. phase FY, and the difference in free energy between the f.c.c. and b.c.c. phases of the same composition are given through [3] and Fmy represent the free energies of mixing of the a and y phases; while @era -' and uFea 4Y represent the difference in free energy between f.c.c. and b.c.c. chromium and iron respectively. During the past year (1967-68), there have been many instances of either partial or complete failure of a tunnel-support system. It looks like the art is in a pretty sad state, but as long as we permit the field of tunnel design to remain basically an art, that's about what we can expect. The application of scientific principles to tunnel design involves much more than assigning values to a series of factors in an equation. I am reminded of the case where the engineer calculated that steel ribs with struts were required to support a horseshoe-shaped tunnel in firm ground. The contractor had driven several hundred feet without installing the struts when the engineer visited the job. When he was informed that the struts had been left out, he fled the tunnel in alarm. As one authority has so aptly put it, "There is far too much calculating and too little observing." Initially, one might think of a tunnel support as a structural member, such as a strut or arch which is installed in order to support some definite load. Similarly, a tunnel lining might be considered as a treatment of the interior surface of the tunnel in order to produce desired aesthetic, hydraulic, or architectural results, or to serve a protective function. Actually, many linings, such as a concrete lining, serve a dual purpose and support a load as well as satisfy other requirements. Not too many years ago a tunnel, during the driving or excavating stage, was considered to be either supported or unsupported. In recent years, however, several techniques have been developed, which by helping the tunnel to support itself, permit the elimination of separate structural support. Since these techniques in many cases actually become a substitute for the conventional types of supports and linings, a state-of-the-art review would hardly be complete without including them for consideration. Thus, for the purpose of this discussion, we shall define tunnel supports as any system or technique which effectively maintains the integrity of the tunnel opening. The writer has long been interested in seeking an explanation of the upper heat effect in the copper-tin alloys over the a + b range, first described in 1913. These notes are offered, not at all as the final explanation 'of this heat effect, but rather to indicate certain progress which has been made toward establishing what happens over this temperature interval. While working on the thermal analysis of the copper-rich kalchoids (copper-tin-zinc alloys), it was noted that those alloys containing major portions of tin and minor portions of zinc exhibited two marked heat effects, one at about 520' C. and the other at about 600" C., instead of the single effect which is generally observed in either of the two binary series. This matter was discussed with Dr. Guertler, who suggested that a heat effect at about 600" C. in the pure copper-tin alloys might be expected. This led to a more searching examination of the thermal critical points in the pure copper-tin alloys, with the result that a marked, although somewhat weak, heat effect was located at about 600. Somewhat later, this upper heat effect was discussed with Dr. Burgess, and it was requested that the Bureau of Standards make heating and cooling curves of one of these alloys for the purpose of removing any possible doubt as to the actual presence of the heat effect. Results obtained by the Bureau are given in Plate I. In an earlier paper1 differential curves were published showing that the heat effect occurred at constant temperature over the a + B range and increased in magnitude with the amount of B up to a point somewhat above 20 per cent. tin. No heat effect was noticed at this temperature in the eutectoid alloy. The existence of this heat effect seems to require a modification of the present copper-tin diagram in the a + B field, and it has been the object of the work here presented to secure the evidence upon which such a change should be based.

FOUR mines at Wabana, on Bell Island in Concep-tion Bay, Newfoundland, produced 1,209,777 tons of ore in 1927, and it is expected that the produc-tion will be larger in 1928. The ore is a stratified oolitic hematite of sedimentary origin. Three workable beds and many thin beds occur in a thickness of 400 ft. of interbedded sandstones and shales. It is not profitable under present conditions to mine extensively in ore beds less than 4 ft. thick. The iron ore beds outcrop on the small island and are inclined northward more steeply, than the slope of the ocean bottom. The mine work-ings follow the bedded ore below the sea bottom, No. 3 Mine extending about 2 miles north of the island. At this point there is a cover of 1500 ft. of rock and 600 ft. of ocean water. It is impracticable to operate drills in the ocean to prove the extent of the submarine orebody in advance, and diamond drilling from the mine workings is the only method of exploration. Bell Island has been settled for a long time and a monument at Cupids, near Brigus at the head of Conception Bay, commemor-ates the tercentenary of a settlement there in 1611 by Captain Guy of England. was one of the chief ports of Newfoundland for deep sea fishing and doubtless many a captain wondered about the red rocks as he sailed past. The famous geologist, J. B. Jukes, records seeing a bright red sandstone 8 ft. thick on the northwest side of Bell Island during a visit in 1842, but he evident ly did not try to land on that rocky coast to get a sample. The iron ore is plainly visible in the high cliffs along the coast of the island, as bright brown layers interbedded with gray and white sandstones and dark shales. The heavy red rock was used by the fisher-men as anchor weights for fish nets and small boats, but its real value, so the story goes, was discovered by a merchant in Saint John,
