"This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2014 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature and specialists in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Minerals Information Center. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry.Three types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. current dollars provided by SNL Metals & Mining (SNL) of Charlottesville, VA; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2014 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events that affected exploration activities including economic, social and political conditions, which were derived from published sources and discussions with USGS and industry specialists. Commodity and regional compilations are presented in this summary. Because multiple sources are used to develop these compilations, statistics may differ depending on the source and type of data that are being reported.The SNL data summarize planned company budgets for worldwide exploration activities in 2014 for 19 nonfuel mineral commodities based on company surveys. Research focused on precious metals (gold, platinum-group metals and silver), base metals (cobalt, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tin and zinc), bulk commodities (iron ore, phosphate and potash), and specialty mineral commodities (diamond, lithium, niobium, rare-earth elements, tantalum and uranium). Information on uranium exploration activities was included for the first time in 2007. Data on lithium, niobium, phosphate, potash, rare-earth elements and tantalum were compiled for the first time in 2010 because of their increased significance. Since 1999, companies with exploration budgets of $100,000 and greater were included in the SNL compilations. SNL budget estimates exclude bauxite, coal and oil and gas. Exploration budget estimates for iron ore have been compiled since 2011 but reported separately. The 2014 SNL company survey is reported by SNL to cover an estimated 95 percent of the world’s nonferrous, nonfuel mineral exploration budgets. The 5 percent that is not covered includes companies that chose not to participate in the SNL survey, private companies that do not publish their budget data, and government-funded exploration activities"

The renaissance in extractive metallurgical practices for gold and silver recovery is far from over. This is one conclusion of a three year investigation into innovations in Cold & Silver Recovery by Randol International Ltd. (1981, 1983). The six volume reference report reviews a host of new processes and innovative applications of older metallurgical practices. Some of these were summarized by von Michaelis (1982, 1982a). There are several reasons to expect this renaissance to continue. One reason is the nature of gold and silver deposits. The list of known occurrences of These metals is very extensive. There are literally tens of thousands of prospects but over 99% of these are too low grade, too small or too refractory for a viable operation employing conventional processing.

The Bureau of Mines measured the geochemical changes as H2S04 was used for in situ uranium leaching by Rocky Mountain Energy Company near Casper, Wyoming. Cores and ground water were analyzed before leaching. Water samples were taken from observation wells located between injection and production wells as the leach solution was brought up to full strength in several steps. Measurements were made of pH, Eh, temperature, conductivity, total dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen, HC03, U, V, Na, K, Ca, Mg, SO4, C1, Mo, Mn, Fe, Al, Si, F, P, As, and Se. The data were gathered to assist in geochemical modeling of leaching and to study the potential environmental effects of acid leaching. Environmental considerations appear favorable. For example, the concentration of Se, a toxic element often found in uranium deposits, stayed below the EPA standard for drinking water.

The Colorado portion of the Rio Grande rift is clearly defined physiographically from the south in the San Luis valley northward to the latitude of Leadville where sediments of the Dry Union Formation (Tweto, 1961) accumulated within the subsiding rift zone. To the north of Leadville is a system of faults active in the late Tertiary, including the Mosquito fault that offset a portion of the Climax mineralization (Wallace et al., 1968). Tweto (197B) describes remnants of Dry Union Formation against the Mosquito fault north of Dillon in the Blue River valley, so it is apparent that the rift and associated sediments extended well to the north of Leadville. Kelley (1952, 1954, 1956) and Chapin (1971) have noted in New Mexico that the Rio Grande rift is a series of en echelon basins, offset to the east, with constrictions connecting them (Fig. 1). In Colorado the structural basins are offset to the west. The net effect of all the rift zone basins in New Mexico and Colorado is an arcuate pattern (Fig. 1) abutting the Colorado Plateau and Sari Juan Volcanic Province on the west. The width of the rift system gradually decreases northward to about Leadville where rift definition is not apparent.

Feldspar is no example of special mineralization in isolated spots: it can usually be found within a mile or so of almost anywhere. Along with silica sand, it is a major part of our world's total mineral composition. This fact imparts to it an economic status different from a sulfide ore, or potash, or phosphate. While every feldspathic "stringer" does not possess economic potential, the generous distribution does yield a high statistical frequency of good feldspar ore bodies: the adjective "good" being subject to some flexibility of interpretation. The strong chemical bonds of this alkali aluminum silicate give it certain use advantages, but under present technology its individual elements cannot practically be separated to create aluminum, potassium, sodium, silicon - or their oxides. Its present uses rely upon chemical inertness - as in fillers; and on its physical melting characteristics and their effect in glass, enamel, or ceramics.

This Paper will deal with Bucketwheel Suction Dredging and its particular relationship to mining applications. There will be comparisons with other methods of suction dredging and descriptions of two recent bucketwheel installations in the mining area. The Directory of World Dredging Fleets published in the `larch 1984 edition of World Dredging magazine shows that there are about 1.000 conventional Cutterhead Dredges listed throughout the world with 289 in the United States. There are 242 Bucketline Dredges listed throughout the world of which only 6 are in the United States. These figures are not completely accurate because several units are known to the author that are not on the list and, of course, there may be others.

Entrainment is a process by which fine and ultrafine particles are transferred to the flotation froth from the top of the flotation pulp, and eventually discharge to the concentrate product, evenwhen they are not attached to gas bubbles. Therefore, entrainment can be considered as a two-step process, one at the upper layer of the pulp to the flotation froth, and the other from froth to the concentrate. Entrainment is inevitable for both hydrophobic and hydrophilic minerals and is one of the significant factors affecting concentrate grade. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the entrainment mechanisms and entrainment models, as well as a summary of the main factors affecting entrainment and the techniques thatmay be used to lower or eliminate entrainment. Based on the review, we point out that selective aggregation of fine and ultrafine gangue minerals using appropriate process aids (polymeric depressants, inorganic salts, etc.) to increase their particle sizes appears to be a convenient and economical method. Directions of further research along this line are discussed.

Sedimentary deposits of pluvial Lake Bonneville are an important source of sand and gravel suitable for aggregate and construction in Utah. Data on Lake Bonneville basin sand and gravel deposit thickness, volume, grain size, percent of fines, and durability were statistically analyzed to detect variations associated with geologic domains, geographic location, Lake Bonneville shorelines, and sand and gravel deposit type, and to construct quantitative deposit models. Analysis showed several trends; (1) sand and gravel in younger shorelines was slightly more durable and the deposits considerably larger in volume, (2) younger shore- lines are also more likely to contain more than one genetic deposit type, (3) the volume of terrace deposits is larger than beach deposits, (4) terraces and beaches are generally thicker than spits and bars, (5) the northern part of the Bonneville Basin contains slightly more durable sand and gravel than the southern part of the basin and is more likely to contain deposits composed of more than one genetic deposit type, aid (6) the Wasatch domain deposits are composed of more than one genetic deposit type more often than deposits of the Basin and Range domain. Three additional conclusions with immediate economic significance are; (1) the median sand and gravel deposit in the Wasatch domain, 360,000 m3 (275,000 yd3), is three times larger than that of the Basin and Range domain (120,000 m3 [90,000 yd3]), (2) the median deposit thickness in the Wasatch domain, 5.8 m (19.0 ft), is nearly twice that of the Basin and Range domain (3 m [lo ft]), and (3) the Wasatch domain also contains slightly larger diameter gravel. These three conclusions are significant because the trend for sand and gravel development in the Bonneville Basin is to move from the Wasatch domain to the Basin and Range domain. Smaller, thinner deposits with smaller diameter gravel will require more surface area to mine than would have been necessary in the Wasatch domain. The result is a higher cost for sand and gravel in construction projects in the Salt Lake City area, especially since the gravel must also be hauled farther.

Although the quantity of native sulphur associated with volcanism is large, production from such deposits represents only a very small percentage of total world production, This paper describes the location of the known deposits, the typical geology of these deposits and the nature of the sulphur mineralization. Methods of treatment are discussed and some comments are offered on the economic position of these occurences in world sulphur markets.

Every mineral project or mine is based on a geologic entity-an ore (mineral) deposit. A well-defined mineral deposit and its associated geologic characteristics are the only aspects of a project that cannot be altered. Mine plans can be modified to exploit the deposit using alternative approaches and yielding similar results. A variety of processing methods also are often available producing generally comparable results. Major modifications can be made to other aspects of the project without substantially changing project economics. However, all engineering and metallurgical aspects of a mine must be accommodated to the spe¬cific location and geologic characteristics of the deposit. Geologic data and interpretations form the foundation for both mine evaluation and mine production by providing esti¬mates of reserves and essential information for mine planning and process design or control. Proper geologic work requires a keen awareness of and an ability to anticipate the technical requirements of geotechnical engineers, hydrologists, mining engineers, metallurgists, and other specialists. The Galena mine is located astride the Polaris fault in the Coeur d'Alene district of northern Idaho. The surface installations are about a mile up Lake Gulch, the mouth of which is about 2.4 km (1 112 miles) west of the old town of Wallace. The mine had its beginnings when the first claims were located in the early boom days of the district in the 1880s and when the first underground ore bodies were opened up in 1917. During the ensuing 14 years, ore was mined from which were recovered 5.4 Mkg (12 million lb) of lead and almost 14.2 Mg (112 million oz) of silver. Workings consisted principally of a vertical shaft from surface to the 800 level and an offset underground shaft to the 1600 level, together with extensive lateral openings. High-grade silver-copper ore was discovered near the Silver Standard fault in the Sunshine mine, a few miles to the west, on the 1700 level in 1930. By 1937, the Sunshine and adjacent mines were producing silver-copper ore on a regular basis. In 1943 additional ore of a similar type was found along the Chester fault, to the east of the principal Sunshine workings. The interest of American Smelting and Refining Co. (renamed ASARCO in 1975) was aroused and the company's geologists determined that the Galena mine, idle since 1931, provided a geological environment in which similar ore might be found. After negotiations were initiated with the owners of the property, Callahan Zinc-Lead Co., the property in question was deeded to Callahan's wholly owned subsidiary, Vulcan Silver-Lead.

Gravity separation techniques were used in the early years to extract native metal nuggets and flakes from placer gold deposits. This was relatively easy for visible metal grains. As the size of the grain becomes smaller traditional gravity separation techniques become inadequate to recover native gold. Cyanidation was invented as a solution to the problem. According to it, gold and other precious metals are dissolved in water by sodium cyanide. The result was a drastic increase of world gold production but at the same time environmental issues were raised. In Greece gold mining has become equivalent with the absolute destruction of the environment and is under extinction. In the last years a new type of gravity equipment have been produced which create a gravitational field up to 200 G and can separate gold from gangue minerals at sizes below 50 µm. The strong gravitational field is created by centrifugal forces and the separation occurs in a fluidized bed, formed by water flow. Accumulations of finely disseminated native gold are found in the sedimentary sequence of the Flysch of the Ionian Zone. The main gold minerals are gold and electrum present as free metal flakes and micro nuggets in the size range between 5-250 µm. Test work, using the Falcon SB40 centrifugal concentrator, at the Department of Mineral Resources Engineering at the Technical University of Crete, has shown that this particular type of gold ore can be processed by gravitational methods that require no reagents and are environmentally safe.

Carbon-in-leach (CIL) is conventionally used in gold processing operations when preg robbing components are present in the ore. The CIL process is becoming attractive even in other situations when preg robbing is not a factor. This article discusses the situations in which the CIL circuit can be applied. The results of leach-carbon-in-pulp (CIP) and CIL circuits at Newmont Gold's Mill No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 are presented for comparison: Mill No. 4 was initially designed for a throughput of 4.1 kt/d (4500 stpd). It is presently operating at an average throughput of 6.6 kt/d (7300 stpd) without significant changes to the original design. The design considerations of the Mill No. 4 CIL circuit are discussed. The design of any processing facility represents a series of decisions. The final design options should ultimately be resolved based on economic as well as technical considerations. Every design decision represents some sort of compromise. From the designer's view point, these decisions are made with the conviction that the final product represents the most prudent long-term expenditure. The design throughput rate is a decision reflecting a maximum return for the capital and operating costs that the plant will incur over the life of the mineral resource. The result is a plant that is not operator proof or maintenance free because it would be too costly to build. Many hard rock tunneling projects, where the majority of excavation can be accomplished with TBMs, will still require considerable specialized excavation which can not be done with a TBM. This secondary excavation, involving cross cuts, galleries, flattening of the invert, increases in bore diameter, et cetera, may be accomplished with conventional drill and blast, applied on a small scale and usually with fracture control techniques, or with mechanical splitters. The problems of using explosives in many of these cases and the high cost of mechanical splitting excavation make the consideration of other approaches attractive. The PCF rock excavation method, which has recently been reduced to commercial practice for mine-development excavation, offers an attractive alternative to drill and blast and mechanical splitters. With the PCF method the rock is excavated utilizing a small-charge, propellant-driven, controlled, penetrating-cone fracture process. Excavation is carried out continuously by combining the PCF hardware with integrated mucking capabilities on a carrier which remains at the excavation point. In addition to the benefit of providing for complicated excavation geometry, the PCF method also causes minimal damage to the remaining rock which will significantly reduce ground support requirements. In very bad ground, the continuous nature of PCF excavation allows ground support to be applied as limited sections are exposed thus reducing both the duration and extent that the ground would be free to move. Data on PCF excavation parameters, as measured in actual mining operations, indicate that crosscuts, galleries and the like could be excavated at considerable cost savings compared to drill and blast or mechanical splitters.

Technology development has played a crucial role in the minerals industry throughout history. The development of new technology allows mankind to produce metals and minerals at progressively lower cost of production in real terms, and therefore at progressively lower prices, improving their availability, accessibility and utilization worldwide. However, the developers of such technology are not guaranteed to reap the benefits from this effort: There is an expectation that technology developers will gain an advantage over their competitors. Is this a short-term benefit that results from a temporary cost or efficiency improvement, or is it a sustainable longer term "edge" that prevails even after metal or mineral price has been eroded by the implementation of a major step change technology? This issue is examined by reference to several case study examples in the copper industry. BACKGROUND The development and adoption of new technology has played a crucial role in the commodity minerals industry throughout history. As new, cost-efficient technologies are commercialized, the cost of production decreases, and this enables lower grade ore to be processed profitably. This in turn increases the availability and supply of the metal or mineral of interest, and ultimately (in a free market environment where the supply- demand balance determines price) inevitably decreases the metal or mineral price. This leads to the question: Why should mining companies invest in (new) technology development if the result is a decrease in the product price? Considerable movement is afoot internationally to rationalize standards and regulations relating to valuations and the qualifications for valuation professionals. In July 2000 the International Valuation Standards Committee released expanded standards, and additional important improvements are planned by 2003. Possible updates to the International Accounting Standards (IAS) and potential adoption of IAS by the United States could significantly impact minerals appraisers. Standards designed specifically for mineral asset valuation are under development in Canada and the United States, with Australia's internationally respected VALMIN Code providing the benchmark. In the United States, the all-encompassing Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) is annually modified and continues to gain deeper acceptance, while the SEC holds fast to its 1981 rule prohibiting reporting of a quantitative estimate and value for non-reserve mineralization. Some important international trade agreements are driving actions to free the trade in professional services. In July 2000, an international workshop was held to initiate discussion on minimum qualifications for appraisers to work internationally. Pressure for uniform minimum qualifications and rules for professionals internationally will continue to build. The United States is historically among the slowest countries to implement such initiatives, with its state level licensure barriers having the potential to cause some of its professionals to be stranded in an international backwater. Structural change is needed in Australia's VALMIN Code to remove conflict with the latest International Valuation Standards. The mineral valuation standards developers of Australia, Canada and the United States should work jointly on updating VALMIN for global use.

The Archean ores of Western Australia are in total the largest producers of gold in Australia. In addition to numerous small and medium sized deposits, the province also contains the giant Kalgoorlie Golden Mile deposits. A variety of different gold ore mineralogical associations has lead to the development of a number of different processing routes for both refractory and non-refractory ore types. Intense weathering and lateritization of Archean greenstones in the semi-arid Yilgarn region have resulted in the development of a deeply oxidized profile (60-100m) above most sulphide orebodies. Residual and re-deposited supergene gold within iron oxide/silica gangue of this zone responds well to CIP, CIL, heap and vat leaching techniques. Although gold is easily liberated in principal from oxidized gangue, in practice recoveries are sometimes affected by iron oxide coatings on gold grains, and by clay minerals which can interfere with plant performance. Refractory ore types in the Eastern Goldfields fall into three main categories - pyritic, arsenopyritic and telluride-bearing. Pyritic ores may be either free milling or require roasting. The difference appears to depend largely on whether gold occurs along grain boundaries or fractures, which can be liberated by grinding, or whether gold occurs as inclusions within pyrite grains and therefore cannot be satisfactorily liberated by grinding. Arsenopyrite bearing ores are not well understood and are complicated by what appears to be a variable degree of gold solid solution, in addition to included gold. Gold occurring in complex gold-silver telluride assemblages has traditionally been recovered by roasting in the Eastern Goldfields.

The search. for massive sulphide orebodies is steadily being extended to greater depths as well as expanding outward into the large portion of the earth's surface where the sulphide bodies are deeply weathered. Massive sulphide orebodies are generally not large in dimensions. They are not like disseminated type sulphide bodies that form large ground exploration targets that can be detected at greater and greater depths simply by increasing the geometrical spacing between the geophysical transmitter and receiver. In¬creasing the transmitter-receiver spacing with massive sulphide bodies eventually "waters down" the anomaly from the body until it disappears into noise. If high surface conductivity is present, as is common in areas of deep weathering, the problem is compounded by the increasing response of the surface layer, as the receiver-transmitter spacing is expanded. The search to greater depths has important implications other than just detection of the orebody. Drilling costs are increased and the probability of missing the target are increased. Missing an orebody is an expense that is difficult to evaluate in dollars per line mile of survey especially since one does not know the value of what was missed. A ground Pulse EM method has the capabilities of solving the problems of deeper exploration particularly in areas of surface weathering it can attain deep penetration without large coil spacings, it also provides information from a complete range of frequencies. The method has other operational advantages since it is free of geometrical restrictions as to coil alignments and can operate in areas of high power line noise.

The most abundant fuel resource in the U.S.A. is also the most under-utilized. Proven reserves of bituminous coal, sub-bituminous and lignite constitute from 60% to 90% of our total fossil fuel reserves -- dependent upon the parameters used by the analyst making the estimate. Despite this ample supply, bituminous coal provided only 20% of U. S. energy consumption in 1967 and 1968, this dropping to 17.57 in 1971 and 1972. By 1978, according to my projections, 16.7% of the Nation's mechanical energy will come from bituminous coal. However, our energy needs are growing at such a rate that the 20.6% provided by bituminous in 1967 equalled 480 million tons while the 16.7% of U. S. consumption visualized for 1978 will require nearly 650 million tons. In order to view coal's position with perspective in this developing energy crunch, it is necessary to examine the total energy situation. To this end, I have prepared a couple of tables which you should have before you. I chose this procedure rather than slides because I would need to utilize an entire wall to make the data visible to an audience. Therefore, I refer you to the long sheet entitled "U. S. Energy Consumption - Trillion Btu - 1967-1978." As you can see from the heading, I am confining my treatment of the problem to the intermediate term. In the long run, if we are willing to pay the cost, we can do a lot of things, including the complete conversion of coal into a sulfur-free fuel.

Phosphate mining and beneficiation in the State of Florida are presently being carried on by 12 different mining companies with a total of 21 mining and flotation plant locations. Their combined production of both washer rock and flotation concentrate was approximately 28,000,000 long tons in 1968. This accounted for 70-72% of the total U. S. production and close to 30% of the world's output of this mineral. From this extensive activity in the Florida phosphate field, one basic flow sheet for beneficiation of the ore has developed over the years as the most commonly employed. In fact, all of these plants with the exception of two beneficiate Florida pebble phosphate using a basic operation as illustrated in Figure I. The two plants which differ from this general approach are not using raw matrix as feed. In one instance, +14 mesh pebble is ground in a rod mill to release free silica which is subsequently removed in a cationic froth flotation circuit using an amine acetate blend and kerosene. This technique generally results in a 4-7 BPL unit upgrading of the feed pebble. The other exception to the standard flow sheet illustrated in Figure I is an operation which is beneficiating tailing piles. In this case, the material is first subjected to cationic froth flotation in order to upgrade the feed to a point comparable to normal matrix. Thereafter, after, the phosphate is floated in an anionic rougher circuit followed by cationic flotation of the silica in a cleaner circuit.
