"Air overpressure monitoring procedures and instrumentation guidelines which apply to production blasting in underground limestone mining are not readily available. The industry also lacks an applicable source for air overpressure levels that are produced by blasting operations in underground limestone mines. As such, there was no available background data from which the expected overpressure levels from production blasting in a new underground limestone mine could be predicted. During the development phase of the mine, it was imperative that newly constructed underground structures be capable of withstanding the overpressure produced by blasting in nearby production headings. To ensure the structures could withstand the blast-induced overpressure, a study was conducted to record empirical overpressure data and develop a model which could be used to control air overpressure levels by the production crews. This document describes the procedures used to develop the model, the development of the model, and the applicability of the model for predicting underground blast overpressures. INTRODUCTION A developing underground limestone mining operation required that a ventilation wall be built to house the permanent mine fans. At the time of the study, the mine was a single-level room and pillar operation with a 7.9 meter (26 ft) high roof, 13.7 meter (45 ft) wide entries, and 13.7 meter by 13.7 meter (45 ft by 45 ft) pillar dimensions. The mine is accessed via a 396 meter (1300 ft) long decline and 100 meter (330 ft) deep ventilation shaft. The ventilation wall was to be partially constructed of autoclaved aerated concrete blocks, for which dynamic strength data from explosives loading were unavailable. The company ownership feared that airblast may affect the wall due to the close proximity of the working faces. Therefore, the company management asked that the overpressure levels be estimated and compared with the designed wall strength. Few studies that apply to explosively-driven air overpressure levels in underground production blasting were found through a literature review. Therefore, the logical approach to assess the overpressure levels was to monitor the blast pressures at the site and conduct a thorough evaluation of the data. As a result of this study, the equipment setup and monitoring procedure used to record the airblast data is described. Finally, the experimental data gathered during the monitoring program is presented, trends and findings from the data are discussed, and recommendations for further study are presented."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated germanium and gallium extraction from an ore containing 0.089% Ge and 0.036% Ga. While previous researchers concluded that a reducing agent such as 502 is needed to extract germanium and gallium from such ore, this research showed that high extractions (87% Ge, 97% Ga) were possible using sulfuric acid alone, if the acid concentration were properly controlled. This control was achieved using a two-stage counter-current leach circuit. Microprobe analyses revealed that the non-extracted germanium is in solid solution with quartz, and therefore cannot be leached with 502 or sulfuric acid.

Since 1993, Newmont has been actively growing through the development of three major foreign mining operations with a fourth under construction. The first project, Yanacocha in Peru began operating in October 1993 at a time when political and business risk in that country was considered high. In 1995, Newmont began operating the Muruntau Joint Venture in Uzbekistan, the first of its kind in the CIS. In early 1996, Newmont started operating the Minahasa mine in Indonesia. Now, in early 1997, Newmont is undertaking the construction of a $1.9 billion project in Indonesia and is completing a feasibility study with our partner for the development of a gold operation in Mexico. All of these projects have been considered "risky" by most standards, and Newmont has been very successful in all of them through risk mitigation programs including utilizing strong and successful in-country partners, concentrating on developing a strong national workforce with minimal expatriate employees, utilizing World Bank, EBRD and IFC financing and building and maintaining strong ties with host governments. This paper describes in more detail, some of the risk mitigation programs that Newmont has used to successfully grow the company through development of major foreign mining operations.

Characterizing exploration prospect potential has aspects that differ from those encountered during ore reserve estimation. One problem is determination of the ore reserve potential prior to acquisition of significant volumes of hard data. The evaluation is subjective and data are usually sparse and of uncertain quality. However, estimations of the ore reserve potential are commonly demanded by management before project funding will be approved. The estimations from several prospects, along with the uncertainties inherent to the estimation, are then used to compare and contrast the potential of several prospects, often with widely varying geologic models.

For the past ten years Paques has been engaged in the development and installation of treatment systems based on biotechnological processes to remove sulfur compounds from water, air and gaseous streams. Metal and sulfate can be removed from mine waters using two biological steps: 1. Sulfate reducing bacteria convert sulfate to hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The H2S reacts with the dissolved metals to form insoluble metal sulfide precipitates. 2. Sulfide oxidizing bacteria convert excess H2S to elemental sulfur. Paques has designed and installed a groundwater treatment system for the Budelco zinc refinery in the Netherlands to remove metals and sulfate as described above. The system has been operating since May 1992 treating a flow of 5000 m /d. A pilot plant started operation in November 1995 at Kennecott's Bingham Canyon Utah copper mine to develop the processes for metal and sulfate removal from groundwater and selective copper recovery from leach water. The principle of the biotechnological methods, full scale experience, and an overview of the test program at the copper mine are presented.

An investigation of several trace elements distributed among sulfide minerals from deposits located in the southeastern United States was conducted. The deposits investigated are distributed within both the Blue Ridge Province and the Piedmont Province, which are contiguous geographic provinces. Twenty five deposits were examined;' eleven in the Blue Ridge Province and fourteen in the Piedmont Province. Figure 1 shows the locations of deposits investigated. In the deposits investigated, the mineral phases examined were pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite. These phases were chosen because of their relatively widespread occurrence, although no pyrrhotite was seen in the Piedmont Province. A total of 116 polished surfaces of ores were prepared, and mineral phases were collected from these surfaces for analysis. Samples were analyzed for cobalt, nickel, manganese, lead, tin, chromium, molybdenum, and gold. A total of 372 analyses were made. Trace elements were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry following standard procedures. In this study, trace elements are defined as those elements which are present in the mineral but which do not affect the chemical formula for that mineral. Lead is considered as a trace element only in ores where little or no lead sulfide could be identified as a distinct mineral phase.

Laboratory data and field tests indicate that substantial losses of valuable coal can be caused by wind erosion. Wind tunnel tests show the effects of wind velocity and particle sizing on the amount of coal lost while in transit. Different coals were evaluated to determine the variables associated with wind erosion. The erosion losses can be substantially reduced by using a binder, or crusting agent, to consolidate the surfaces of the coal into a solid mass which resists erosion. This not only reduces economic loss but minimizes pollution.

The discovery of the Prudhoe Bay field temporarily reduced interest in the development of coal conversion processes, but interest is being re¬newed by the current energy crisis. According to M.A. Wright, Chairman of the Board of Humble Oil and Refining Company(l), the reserve in the Prudhoe Bay bield has been confirmed to be about 10 billion barrels. At first glance this appears to be an extremely large reserve which will eliminate supply problems for the United States for some time. This feeling of security is lost when one realizes that by 1980 the world will consume the reserves of a Prudhoe Bay or a Libya, or Venezuela in less than a year, based on the recent predictions of U.S. and world reserves made by Eastman-Dillon, Union Securities Company(2). Recent forecasts of U.S. demand and source of supply made by Kenneth E. Hill of Eastman-Dillon are shown in Figure 1. This forecast shows a decline in domestic supplies (excluding Alaska) after 1973, with the total domestic supply leveling off in 1975 at about 13 million barrels per day. Since the predicted demand increases from about 14 million barrels per day in 1970 to about 20 million barrels per day in 1980, about 35% of domestic consumption must come from imports or non-conventional sources by 1980. More imminent is the shortage of low sulfur fuel oil which has been created by the new, tough air pollution regulations that are basically legis¬lating eastern coals out of the market. As an alternate to importing large quantities of low sulfur fuel oil or importing and desulfurizing regular fuel oil, one of two domestic solutions is possible: stack gas clean-up or solids fuel pretreatment. Stack gas clean-up may be the cheapest approach for old installations, but fuel pretreatment has real advantages for new installations. This paper is a brief review of the recent history, and the present status of, of the program designed to develop practical new processes for producing pipeline quality gas from coal. Clean synthetic pipeline-quality gas from coal became a major objective during 1971. Agreement was reached with the American Gas Association, Inc., to cosponsor a $120 million, 4-year program to be funded $80 million by Government and $40 million by American Gas Association. The program was first announced by President Nixon in his Energy Message on June 4, 1971, and a portion of the additional funds needed for the program was approved by the Congress in the December 1971 supplemental budget action. A natural gas shortage has developed in the United States and every indication is that it will worsen. Many transmission and distribution companies have already been forced to curtail sales because of the shortage. Large sums are being committed to systems needed to bring liquefied natural gas from abroad and to plants to manufacture synthetic natural gas from petroleum--also largely imported. On the other hand, there is sufficient domestic coal to supply all of the needed gas through the next century. This accelerated program is designed to provide processes for making gas from coal at costs, including security costs, below the imported alternates. As outlined in the President's Energy Message, OCR and A.G.A. have accelerated the coal gasification program to make it possible to construct and operate a "demonstration plant" (semicommercial size) after 1975. Several processes, in various stages of development as will be described later, are being supported. Concurrently, the overall program will be constantly monitored and evaluated with the assistance of an independent, unbiased contractor. C F Braun of Alhambra, California, was selected for this task and has been actively engaged in it for the last several months. Power plants that utilize conventional wet flue-gas desulfurization methods produce enormous amounts of flue-gas scrubber sludge. A typical 400 MW power station that burns a high sulfur coal produces 170,000 tons of wet flue-gas scrubber sludge per year. This scrubber sludge is currently landfilled at an enormous cost to utility companies. This material could be used as a raw material for industries that use gypsum, such as the wallboard and plaster industries. However, before it can be used as feedstock for these industries, some of the impurities such as unreacted limestone and silicates must be removed from the scrubber sludge. Froth flotation has tremendous potential for separating these impurities from scrubber sludge. In order to select an optimum flotation process, it is necessary to characterize the surface properties of the major components in the scrubber sludge, which consist of calcium sulfite, calcium sulfate, calcium carbonate (limestone), and silica. In this study zeta potential measurements were used to determine the surface charge of the components in scrubber sludge, with the goal of optimizing a froth flotation process to produce a marketable gypsum product for the wallboard and plaster industries.

The markets and applications of Wyoming bentonite deposits are primarily determined by the functional properties of a bentonite ore which results from the unique mineralogy and chemistry of each deposit. Commercial bentonite products contain sodium montmorillonite as the major mineral component, with minor concentrations of accessory minerals such as quartz, opal (silica hydrate), mica, feldspar, gypsum and zeolites. The chemical composition of the sodium montmorillonite influences the functional properties of the bentonite in significant ways. The type and concentration of various accessory minerals also influence the acceptability of the bentonite in each market.

The Refugio Project is located in the Andes mountains of northern Chile, in the Maricunga Hineral Belt. The Verde, Pancho and Guanaco Au ore bodies have been recognized and are Early Miocene in age. Mineralization consists of fine-grained disseminated gold hosted by dacitic to dioritic subvolcanic porphyries. Alteration comprises massive to veinlet-controlled silicification overprinted on earlier potassic and propylitic alteration and surrounded by later argillic alteration. Geologic relationships suggest that the Refugio ore bodies occur within an Early Tertiary volcano overlying Paleozoic and Mesozoic basement rocks. Geologic reserves at Refugio are approximately 300 million grams (9.7 million ounces) of gold. The Verde deposit contains 185 million tonnes of mineable and leachable ore with an average grade of 0.90 glt Au and is currently in the pre-construction stage after a positive feasibility study. Proven and probable mining reserves at Verde deposit are 101 million tonnes at an average grade of 1.02 glt gold. Additional potential exists at to other deposits within the Refugio property (Pancho and Guanaco) but no reserves have yet been defined due to the limited drilling to date.

Very few mineral properties spend their entire lifespans from discovery to depletion in the hands of one owner. More likely, properties will have several owners, and partial interests may change quite often. Similarly, mineral companies are bought and sold with frequency, in recent years at what appears to be an accelerating rate. The reasons for selling a property can be manifold -need for additional capital in other parts of the business, need for development capital, realization of a large gain at a perceived high point in the market, pessimistic commodity outlook, retirement of principals, or resolution of estate problems. Regardless of the reasons for a sale, there are specific steps that logically follow. Spruce up the business, package the information, market the property, negotiate the terms, close the sale, and make sure it stays sold. Adherence to certain very basic ground rules in property sales can maximize the profits and minimize the effort.

The challenge of mining coal seams having a pitch of 30 degrees is one not frequently found in the United States, due primarily to the scarcity of such deposits. However, in the Thompson Creek District in Pitkin, Colorado, such a challenge exists to produce high quality medium volatile coking coal, and development of a longwall system is underway. The deposits under consideration are those of the Anschutz Corporation Inc. of Denver, Colorado, which are not in a virgin state. The properties were originally mined by the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation from 1894-1907, and by the Thompson Creek Coal and Coke Corp. from 1953-1966. Approximately five and one half million tons of coal have been mined by the above companies, attesting to its quality. The cessation of operations in both instances was occasioned by economics. Both companies employed a room and pillar system of mining, but being denied the use of high capacity mining and loading machinery because of the excessive pitch of the coal seam. This resulted in an unfavorable productivity expressed as output per man-shift, and thus the high cost of production occasioned by hand loading and semi-mechanization dictated cessation of operations. Most wet mines face unquantified water costs as well as the obvious wing costs. Both kinds of cost are multiplied by work at greater depth and by higher unit prices. This intensified challenge merits renewed or perhaps altogether new response. Any practicable way to reduce inflow tackles both obvious and unquantified costs. Ten groups of possible ways to do it are cited. Most have been demonstrated. Two are known from work other than mining. Surely new means can be found. Here are opportunities for operators of wet mines!

"Mine water generated from underground coal mining operations contains both dissolved and particulate solids. Dissolved solids primarily consist of sodium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, chlorides and sulfates. When discharged to a receiving stream without treatment, these constituents create a potentially toxic environment for aquatic life.A case study is presented to discuss how a centralized treatment plant treats mine water from six locations to meet discharge limitations for chlorides. Located in West Virginia, this facility consistently achieves less than the National Pollutant Discharge Elemenation System (NPDES) permit limitation of 218 mg/L chlorides in the discharge while generating almost zero liquid waste. The dissolved solids concentration in the influent ranges between 5,000 and 10,000 mg/L, with chloride concentrations of 1,000 to 2,000 mg/L and sulfate concentrations of 2,000 to 6,000 mg/L.The mine water is treated using advanced treatment technology to produce clean water for discharge or reuse. The treatment process comprises aeration, softening, filtration, reverse osmosis (RO) reject softening, evaporation, crystallization, final effluent remineralization and sludge dewatering. The solid waste generated in the treatment process is landfilled on site. The leachate is sent back to the facility’s thermal treatment process. Because no liquid waste leaves the property, this plant is termed a zero liquid waste (ZLW) facility.The advanced water treatment system was built to meet a new 218 mg/L regulatory limitation imposed by the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection for chlorides discharged to surface waters. The system is designed to treat a maximum flow of approximately 795 m3/h (5 million gpd) of mine water. The treatment process utilizes RO membrane treatment to achieve the effluent criteria, and evaporation and crystallization technology to manage the RO concentrate from the water treatment process. As a result, the system produces clean water for discharge while generating zero liquid waste. The effluent water can be used for industrial purposes or discharged to a receiving stream. A water impact index (WIIx) study indicated that discharge of this high-quality water into the Monongahela River watershed may improve the water quality for downstream water users. The waste produced in the treatment process, including softening sludge and salt, is disposed of in an onsite landfill. Currently, the plant is treating at an average flow of 490 m3/h (3.1 million gpd) of mine water with an average influent chloride concentration of 1,530 mg/L and an average effluent chloride concentration of 11 mg/L."

"Signs in underground mines are subject to variable airflow, which carries dust and moisture. Dust buildup reduces their visibility, hampering production efficiency and safety. Underground workers commonly must stop to clean signs in order to gauge their location, or find critical supplies or services. There are currently a variety of coating products, including dust and water repellants, available on the market that have the potential to reduce dust accumulation on sign surfaces. This paper describes a preliminary study to determine their effectiveness. The study involved a practical testing protocol using a trickle rock duster and samples cut from a clean, used road sign. Product effectiveness, under both dry and wet conditions, was evaluated based on photographic evidence by comparing changes in sign luminosity after a period of rock dust application. By analyzing the frequency of different pixel luminosities on the dust-covered samples, both uniformity of dust coverage and the total amount of accumulation was assessed. Results indicate that at least one product may reduce the amount of dust buildup on sign surfaces and increase visibility. INTRODUCTION In all underground mines, visibility of signage is critical. Signs inform miners of their location, direction toward escape routes, and location of supplies. Over time, sign surfaces can collect dust and can eventually become unreadable. The rate of dust accumulation on surfaces is often particularly high in coal mines, where both mining (e.g., cutting and drilling) and rock dusting activities can contribute significant amounts of dust to the airways. Several factors may contribute to dust buildup on sign surfaces. First, basic principles of fluid and particle flow are at play. When a fluid travels past a stationary surface, the velocity of the fluid at the surface boundary is zero. If a very small dust particle moving with air collides with a surface, it does not immediately fall off since the air velocity is zero at the sign surface. (This is the same reason that dust can collect on a rotating ceiling fan.) Further, once the collision occurs, other mechanisms may help keep the particle there – including friction that resists particle falling due to gravity, and adhesive forces due to humidity and/or static charges the particle and others already on the surface. Currently, the most common way to deal with reduced sign visibility due to dust buildup is for mine personnel (e.g., a compliance foreman, supply worker) to periodically clean sign surfaces – usually just by wiping them with a cloth. As a regular activity, this solution is inefficient; in cases of emergencies, it can also pose unnecessary risks. Application of an off-the-shelf coating to sign surfaces may represent a simple yet effective way to reduce the rate of dust accumulation. There are currently a variety of products on the market that may be suitable for this purpose, including dust and water repellants."

Coal producers and utilities depend on automated coal blending systems to reduce costs and meet stringent environmental regulations. Over 30 systems installed in the United States since 1987 use on-line PGNAA (Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis) analyzers to accurately control the blending process. Experience and detailed engineering are required to integrate real-time data produced by the coal analyzer with a control system to meet demanding performance specifications. This article reviews successful installations and lists important features including interfacing analyzers with plant control systems, specifying feeders and weigh scales, and managing data.

"INTRODUCTION The Liantang / Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point (BCP) project, located in the north-east New Territories of Hong Kong, will form the seventh land crossing between the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HK) and Shenzhen in China (Figure 1). The BCP project comprises an 11km long dual two-lane trunk road linking the border crossing facility to the existing road infrastructure in HK and when completed it will facilitate future regional development and alleviate frequent traffic congestion at the existing Boarder control points.In December 2013 Dragages Hong Kong (a member of the Bouygues Construction Group) was awarded the 5.4km long Contract 2 section of the project, including the 4.8km long Lung Shan Tunnels, by the Civil Engineering and Development Department of the Government of the HK SAR. To overcome the difficult ground conditions anticipated along the Contract 2 section of the project the tunnels will be constructed using mechanical and drill and blast (D&B) excavation techniques together with a 14.1m diameter multi-mode Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). Land constraints imposed on the project alignment require that the final 500m section at the northern end of the Lung Shan tunnels, under Princess Hill (Figure 2), takes an almost 90 degree turn towards the north. The resulting 354m radius curve restricts the sight-line of road users to below the minimum 110m at 80km/hr hence, the internal span of the tunnels needs to be increased from 12.6m, in the standard straight section, to 15.4m in this curved section to accommodate a widened shoulder which will provide the required sight-line distance."

In 1986, a cooperative effort by the Homestake Mining company, the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Utah was initiated to determine shaft stability while recovering high grade ore in a nearby pillar. Premining finite element simulations indicated the shaft would remain in elastic ground. Six years have elapsed and, despite some initial concern during the first lifts, it appears that the bulk of the original reserve will be safely and profitably recovered. An integrated application of rock mechanics tools from laboratory testing through numerical modelling to mine measurements and observations contributed substantially to the operational success of the project.
