The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of flake and high-crystalline natural graphite from 4 domestic and 25 foreign mines and deposits in 11 market economy countries (MEC's). Demonstrated resources were estimated to be 95 million metric tons (Mmt) containing 5.61 Mmt of recoverable flake and high-crystalline graphite products. Fifty-five percent (3.17 Mmt) of the total recovered product is estimated to comprise plus 100-mesh (150-µm) flake pro-ducts and "lump" and "chip" high-crystalline products, designated as "graphite A" in this study; 45 pct (2.44 Mmt) of the total is minus 100-mesh (150-µm) flake products and "dust" high-crystalline products, designated as "graphite B." Total production costs, including all costs needed over the life of each operation, were determined at a 0-and 15-pct discounted-cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR) for both graphite A and graphite B products. For a 15-pct DCFROR, 1.74 Mmt (54.9 pct) of the graphite A products is available at $600/mt or less and 2.13 Mmt (67.2 pct) is available for $800/mt or less. For the same DCFROR, 1.08 Mmt (44.3 pct) of the graphite B is available at $200/mt or less, and 1.71 Mmt (70 pct) is available at $325/mt or less. No domestic resources were determined to be economic at present prices. A sensitivity analysis of the relative economics of the Alabama graphite deposits under various operational parameters is presented in an appendix. All evaluations are in January 1984 dollars.

Wildcat strikes in the Appalachian coal fields, primarily in West Virginia, have resulted in an estimated 4.5 million ton loss in coal production during July and through the first week in August. Since then, the strike intensified further, and on August 9, nearly all of West Virginia's 60,000 miners were off the job with another 10,000 miners on strike in eastern Kentucky. The Bureau of Mines estimates that West Virginia's coal output is currently (8/9) eight million tons below last year when the state produced 108 million tons. West Virginia, the Nation's second largest coal producer of coal behind Kentucky, has not failed to mine over 100 million tons a year since 1938. At the end of the second week in August, nearly all coal miners in West Virginia remained out. The strike is a protest against a cutback in union health and retirement benefits. An announcement June 23 about the United Mine Worker's health and retirement fund precipitated the strike, Fund directors said that because of inflation and production losses caused by earlier wildcat strikes and the severe winter, miners would have to pay the first $250 of hospital costs and 40 percent of doctor bills, up to $500 a year. Previously, the funds paid all hospital and doctor bills. According to the West Virginia Coal Association each day of the strike in West Virginia results in a loss of coal production of 500,000 tons, a loss of $3.8 million in miners wages and $1 million in contributions to the UMWA's health and retirement fund.

The Bureau of Mines has evaluated the potential availability of silver from 436 mines and deposits in 41 market economy countries (MEC?s) comprising five major economic categories of deposits: predominantly silver deposits and predominantly zinc, lead, copper, and gold deposits. This study evaluated the long-term cost and availability of primary silver production from 53 producing and 13 nonproducing predominantly silver properties in 11 MEC's and estimated the total recoverable silver from 370 properties as a coproduct or byproduct of zinc, lead, copper, or gold production. This study resulted in estimates of a demonstrated resource of 5.99 billion tr oz of recoverable silver as of January 1984. Of this total, 23.5 pet is in the 66 mines and deposits classified as predominantly silver properties. The largest quantity of recoverable silver, 43.9 pct, lies in the 121 properties classified as predominantly zinc, with 26.5 pct in 120 properties classified as predominantly copper, 4.1 pet in 21 predominantly lead properties, and 2.0 pct in 108 predominantly gold properties. At current silver prices, the economics of silver production favor silver that is a byproduct or coproduct of zinc, lead, copper, or gold, and much of the silver production in the United States from the predominantly silver mines is at an economic disadvantage in comparison with silver production in other countries.

Crucible-smelting tests at the Northwest. Electrodevelopment Laboratory and a pilot-plant test on electric smelting of western phosphate rock for the Westvaco Chlorine Products by the Tennessee Valley Authority indicated that the small vanadium content of the rock is concentrated in the ferrophosphorus by-product of Phosphorus smelting. This research is concerned' mainly with recovering vanadium and phosphorus froth the ferrophosphorus produced from western phosphate rock. Exploratory tests were made of several methods of treating vanadiferous ferrophosphorus. Attempts to separate vanadium as a carbide dross by saturating molten ferrophosphorus with carbon were unsuccessful. Volatilization of phosphorus from ferrophosphorus was accomplished to some extent, both with and without addition of sulfur in several forms, but elimination of phosphorus was not complete. Brief testing in a small experimental converter on oxidation of vanadium and phosphorus; into a slag by blowing with air showed promise. A method that comprised fusing vanadiferous ferrophosphorus mixed with soda ash under oxidizing conditions gave encouraging results and was tested beyond the preliminary stage. A slag product of the fusion contained most of the phosphorus and vanadium as water-soluble sodium phosphate and. virtually water-insoluble sodium vanadate. After leaching the sodium phosphate froth the slag, the leach residue was reroasted with soda ash and salt. This roasted product was leached again with water to extract the vanadium.

The Cuyuna iron range in Crow Wing County, Minn., is the principal producer of manganiferous iron ore in the United States. The ore is mined from a manganiferous iron formation in the bedrock of the Cuyuna district. This iron formation is divided into two general lithologic types-thin-bedded and thick-bedded. The unoxidized, thin-bedded iron formation is composed of iron silicate with associated fine-grained carbonates of iron and manganese. The thick-bedded iron formation carries iron and manganese oxides with intimately associated silica. Oxidation and leaching of the original iron formation have been the most influential factors in producing manganiferous iron-ore concentrations in quantities large enough to exploit on a commercial basis. The unoxidized and the partly oxidized and enriched iron-formation materials are suitable as a source of ferrograde manganese ore. These materials have been classified according to their amenability to mineral dressing and degree of oxidation and leaching.

The Bureau of Mines is establishing design criteria for effective roof support systems and is developing technology to improve mine planning and design. Geologic studies, surface and underground mine monitoring, and laboratory evaluations were conducted. The seven papers in this proceedings Information Circular present results of several investigations. Addressed are problems existing in both longwall and multiple-seam mines. Discussions include the effect of dewatering at a longwall mine site in the Pittsburgh coal seam and the effect of chain pillars on subsidence. Other results are measurement and characterization of longwall rock mass movement and an integrated design for stability in multiple-seam mining.

This circular outlines salient facts regarding the sulphur industry of the United States and the world. It is founded chiefly upon published information available in the literature of the subject. The Bureau of Mines has in its files additional, more detailed data upon many of the topics presented very briefly here, and will endeavor to assist the mineral industries and the public by giving further information in response to individual inquiries. It will welcome comments, criticisms, and contributions of data that may assist in making later editions of this circular more accurate, or in developing more fully the bureau's mineral files pertaining to sulphur. Throughout this paper sulphur is used to designate crude sulphur or brimstone, not sulphur produced from pyrites or' smelter gases.

The investment involved in any communication system represents a considerable sum. Even though it is desirable that the system work properly each and every time it is called into use, some failures are bound to occur. Most failures, however, and especially those that occur most frequently, are due to poor installation techniques. An extra hour spent at an installation site can save many maintenance trips and many frustrating hours of system troubleshooting. Typical faults likely to cause communication outrage are Pager phone systems Poor splices aggravated by corrosion. Strain relief not provided. Drip loop not provided. Incorrect branch connections. Overloading the circuit. Poor battery connections. Improper wire size or type. Lightning strikes. Improper placement of wire runs. Carrier phones Mounting transceiver near load resistors or other sources of heat. Tracks not electrically bonded. Cable abrasion due to poor mounting location. Disconnected battery. Poor mechanical installation. Each installation should be well planned. After an installation is completed, the technician should ask the question, "What can go wrong with this unit or line?" Remember the adage, "Whatever can go wrong, will." Preventive measures taken during installation will pay off in the long run. 6.2 Pager Phone Installation The pager phones used in many underground coal mines are battery-operated, party-line telephones with provisions for loudspeaker paging. The system is usually two-wire, nonpolarized, and operated by self-contained batteries. Many of the individual units are certified as permissible. 6.2.1 Mounting Pager phones are designed to be mounted on an upright support at the desired location. For convenience, the phone should be mounted 5 feet above the floor where there is no obstruction to using the handset or removing the cabinet front cover for servicing or battery replacement. In low-coal situations, a suitable height for installation should be selected convenient to the normal operator's position at the site selected. About 12 inches of free space on each side of the phone should be provided for cabinet access. The phone should be protected against direct exposure to dripping water and should not be allowed to rest in a puddle of water. The mounting location should be convenient to a work location and have a safe, unobstructed area for a worker to stand and use the phone. The phone must be in a location where the worker will not be in the path of moving vehicles or falling debris. Each telephone is normally well insulated, but it is still good practice to provide an insulating mat or dry planking for the user to stand on.

World investment 10 all mineral and mining industry sectors is not available. However, partial information available provides some information useful for analysis. Information available in this section covers limited geographic information on investment in the steel industry, limited information for petroleum industry capital spending, and total U.S. foreign investment in comparison to the mineral-related sectors (tables 13, 14, and 15). Annual steel industry investment is available for the European Community, almost all countries within the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), Latin America, and other countries with significant mineral industries, such as Canada, Japan, and the United States. Although information was not available for 1992, data for 1991 indicate that for those countries aforementioned, total investment increased by 8 %. However, investment patterns were very different within the different groups of countries. While the European Community had a net increase of 12 %, dominated by an almost °40 % increase in Germany, EFTA member countries had a 26 % decrease in investment for the same period. Investment in EC countries was almost seven times that of EFT A countries. Japan's investment in the iron and steel industry, by far the largest of those available, almost twice that of the EC and almost four times that of the United States, increased by more than 20 %. In North America, investment in Canada and the United States decreased. Almost all of Latin America decreased investment in the sector. The notable exception was Mexico, with a 60 % increase. Changes in Mexico's investment policies of the recent past, its economic growth, and privatization of its iron and steel industry are some of the reasons for such an increase. The other country covered individually in Latin America, where investment in the iron and steel industry increased, although slightly, was Argentina. This limited information does not allow a comprehensive analysis of global industry trend, which in turn impacts many other mineral commodities, and with the transition in many countries within Europe and Central Eurasia that are now effecting the steel industries of the countries that were members of the U.S.S.R. and its CMEA partners, it is most regrettable that comprehensive and comparable data, both current and historic, on investment in this area are not available.

Previous studies of magnetic separation of pyrite from coals have been reviewed critically. Magnetic susceptibilities of United States coals of differing rank have been measured. The effects of crushing, magnetic mixing, drying, weathering, and heat treatment on the enhancement of the magnetism of pyrite have been analyzed. The importance of size distribution of pyrite in the coal and the necessity of crushing to liberate the pyrite has been discussed. It has been found that the inherent susceptibilities of the carbonaceous, mineral-free portions of coals (? -0.5 X 10-6 in cgs units) and of relatively pure pyrite isolated from coals (? -0.3 X 10-6) do not permit efficient separation of pyrite from coal; the average susceptibility of the magnetic fraction of coal must be raised to 3 X 10-6. Friction forces encountered in crushing sedimentary pyrite embedded in coal do not increase its susceptibility. Subsequent weathering or heat treatment below 400° C leads to the formation of iron sulfate and hence increases the effective paramagnetism of pyrite. Ferromagnetic compounds of iron are not formed in significant quantities at temperatures below 400° C. The degree of liberation and apparent susceptibility of pyrite are the most important parameters in its separation. It is concluded that effective beneficiation of coals can be achieved by magnetic separation. A sufficient increase in the susceptibility can be achieved by converting less than 0.1 percent of pyrite into ferromagnetic compounds of iron. Such conversions occur only at temperatures >500° C. An investigation of the dielectric properties of coals and pyrite in the frequency range 0.1 to 60 Mhz indicates that the imaginary dielectric constant of the pyrite is about 100 times larger than that of coal. Exploratory experiments indicate that pyrite can be selectively heated to temperatures above 500° C without appreciable rise in the temperature of coal. It appears that dielectric heating of coals in the Ghz frequency range is the most feasible method of enhancing the paramagnetism of pyrite.

"INTRODUCTION In the course of the investigation the Bureau of Mines is carrying on to determine the causes, behavior, a. control of mine fires, the detection of incipient heating underground in the mines and above ground in refuse banks has received consideration.Many of the anthracite fires have been active for years and have progressed considerable distances free their original source.Some of the fires are in inaccessible territory, and it is often impossible to determine with any degree of accuracy their exact location or even the veins of coal that are afire, especially when the fire is in the upper strata and when it is impossible to go underground because of flooded conditions or the presence of an irrespirable atmosphere.In such cases, the only means by which the trend of a fire may be ascertained (as a result of any fire-fighting methods that may have been employed) are the sampling, exanination, and interpretation of the gaseous products coming from the fire area. The most important information desired is to know whether the temperature in the heated area is increasing or decreasing and to determine whether a fire that has been sealed is cooling down to normal mine temperatures or is maintaining its heat or is increasing in intensity due to infiltration of outside air.Interpretation of the analyses of gaseous products from refuse banks on the surface also should be of value in combating such fires. Refuse bank fires, with the additional danger of starting an underground fire through ignition of the outcrop, are by no means unknown in the anthracite coal region, and the causes of such fires are not always apparent. In a few cases the causes have been strongly suggestive of spontaneous origin."

Highwall mining continues to grow in importance as a coal production method from U.S. surface mines. It may account for as much as 4% of the total U.S. coal production, according to one recent estimate. Analysis of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident and injury statistics shows that, overall, highwall mining has maintained an admirable safety record. Its fatality and injury rates are comparable to those for other surface mining methods, and are significantly lower than those for underground mining. No mining method is risk free, however. Highwall mining injuries have been associated with handling materials, slips and falls, machinery, powered haulage, and other types of incidents. But perhaps the greatest risk, to both personnel and equipment, is from ground control. The two most significant ground control hazards are rock falls from the highwall and equipment entrapment underground. Highwall Stability Ensuring highwall stability through proper ground control engineering is of paramount importance to safe highwall mining operations. The only fatality to occur during the last five years at a highwall mining operation was due to highwall collapse. There have also been numerous near-misses, several of which have involved extensive damage to equipment. In the central Appalachians, where the majority of highwall mining occurs in the U.S., hillseams are the most prominent geologic structures that affect highwall stability. Hillseams (or mountain cracks) are near vertical fractures in the rock that are formed in response to natural weathering and erosion of hillsides. They extend hundreds of feet down from the surface. They typically run parallel to the hillside, but they can also extend across narrow points or ridge lines. The hazard arises when rock slabs that form along the hillseams detach and fall away from the highwall face (See Figure 1). [ ] Unfortunately, it is impossible to control the location of hillseams or reliably detect their presence within a highwall. There are, however, a number of measures that can be taken to minimize the risk of failure associated with hillseams: Planning-Most operators choose to skip those areas of the highwall where a prominent hillseam daylights (See Figure 2). Existence of such areas is known for several weeks in advance of highwall mining; therefore, planning engineers can adjust the layout of highwall mining panels to locate barrier pillars within areas of questionable highwall stability. [ ] Inspection and monitoring-Daily inspection of the benches above the active highwall mining area is a prudent precautionary measure. A crack in a bench immediately above a highwall miner is shown in Figure 3. Simple displacement monitors may be useful for detecting movement along cracks that may precede a significant life-threatening failure. New tools, such as slope monitoring radar, may also prove useful in detecting motion of the rock slopes above active highwall mining operations. Good blasting practice-Most surface coal miners in the central Appalachians use pre-splitting and the familiar halfbarrels are routinely seen throughout the pits. Shorter delays along the face and longer delays between rows can direct more of the blast force parallel to the face, potentially doing less damage to the wall rock. In addition to pre-splitting, decreasing the burden, spacing and charge weight in drill holes close to the highwall will also decrease damage to the wall rock. Decreasing the highwall slope angle-Decreasing the highwall slope angle from 90° (vertical) to 70°-80°, especially in areas of known hillseam concentration, could eliminate the hillseam hazard (See Figure 4). Comprehensive world mineral industry investment data do not exist, but limited material published on aggregates of in vestment in some elements of the world mineral industry suggest a continued up-turn in the investment level, at least in market economy countries in 1989. Steel industry investments in Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries are not yet available for 1989 but, as shown in table 6, increased by 22.1% in 1988, after showing a decrease of 5.2% (revised) in 1987. The pattern of investment ups and downs varied during 1988 within country blocs and economic alliances showing no particular trends. Investment in the steel industry by the United States increased by 58.3% between 1987 and 1988 and was 1 1.9% higher than the previous highest amount invested during the 1984-88 period but was still 41.5% less than the amount invested in 1983. Investment in the steel industries of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) dropped again in 1988 from the revised amount for 1987, which became the first drop after several years of steady growth in what became the expanded ECSC in 1986. This drop in 1988 was the result of lower investments by Denmark, France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Nether- lands, and Spain, investments grew or remained level in Belgium, Portugal, and the United Kingdom in 1987 and 1988. A decrease in investment in the Canadian (-26.6%) steel industry was offset by in- creases registered by the members of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) of 31.7%, by Japan of 19.8% by Turkey of 22.4%, and a slight increase by the nations of Latin America. If data for the world steel industry as a whole, including those of the centrally planned economy countries, were available, the same pattern presumably would be shown as that reported; that is, it would remain fairly stable, with increases in some countries being offset by decreases in others. However, the lack of comprehensive information on the centrally planned economy countries makes it impossible to determine whether the overall trend was up or down despite recorded increases or decreases in production of the materials involved. The concept of limit burning velocities is being used to formulate a quantitative theory of flammability limits. Competing and complicating processes dissipate power from a combustion wave and quench propagation at some characteristically low limit velocity. Two earlier reports dealt with process (a), natural convection (RI 8127); and with process (b), conductive-convective wall losses (RI 8469). This report considers process (c), radiative losses, and process (d), selective diffusional demixing. The limit burning velocity for radiative losses is [(SU)c ~ e cp] It is normally not a significant process for premixed gas flames; however, for laminar flame propagation in a gravity-free environment, it is the only loss process present. Accordingly, limit velocities at zero gravity should be much lower than on earth, and premixed gases should be flammable over wider composition ranges. For highly emissive dusts, soot, or ash-forming flames, radiative losses are significant even under normal gravity conditions. Selective diffusional demixing is a complication that manifests itself in the form of cellular flame structures and wide gaps in composition between upward and downward propagation limits. It induces a burning velocity shift (?Su)d, causing the flame to behave as though it were richer or leaner than its initial composition, depending on whether the fuel or the oxidizer mole¬cule has the higher diffusivity. A simple pertubation analysis shows that the process generates stable cellular flames whenever [dsu] > 0, where ci is the concentration of the reactant with the higher diffusivity. The same analysis indicates that at the opposite stoichiometry, where [dcu] < 0, laminar structures are stabilized. A simple formula for the diameter of cellular flames is derived, which predicts that dcell should vary inversely with the product of the diffusivity difference Di -DJ, and the burning velocity slope [dc ]. Those predictions are in good agreement with the available data. Buoyancy forces for upward propagation induce flame front curvature, and hence buoyancy and selective diffusion are mutually supportive in upward propagation. Thus large gaps in composition between upward and downward limits are present in those composition domains where cellular flames are stable.

Mine waste and mine reclamation are topics of major interest to the mining industry, the government and the general public. This publication and its companion volume are the proceedings of a conference held in Pittsburgh, April 19-21, 1988. There were nine sessions (50 papers) that dealt with the geochemistry, hydrology and problems of mine waste and mine water, especially acid mine drainage. These comprise Volume 1. The nine sessions (43 papers) that dealt with reclamation and restoration of disturbed lands, as well as related policy issues, are included in volume 2. Volume 2 also contains the ten papers that pertained to control of subsidence and mine fires at abandoned mines. Poster session presentations are, in general, represented by abstracts; these have been placed in the back of both volumes.

This report covers the activities of a feasibility study of fiber optics technology fur use in mines. The objective of the study was to evaluate, both technically and cost-wise, the possible use of fiber optic technology for underground mine communication and monitoring systems. The first phase of the study was devoted to the collection of information on the present underground mine communication systems and monitoring techniques, and the status of applicable fiber optic technology. In the second ph se of the study, a communication and monitoring system for a hypothetical underground coal mine was designed and the costs estimated. The significant findings and conclusions are presented.

A critical study of the wet Thiogen process for extracting sulphur from the smoke of smelters is one of several investigations related to the general smelter-smoke problem that are being conducted under the direction of the Bureau of Mines. Part of the work done in the pyrometallurgical section of the cooperative metallurgical exhibit of the Bureau of Mines at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition during 1915 related to this investigation, and at the expiration of the exposition, the work was continued in the labora- tories of the Bureau of Mines in the Hearst Memorial Mining Building of the University of California, Berkeley, Cal., where a mining experiment station of the bureau has been established under the cooperative agreement with the University of California. Early in the spring of 1915, when plans were being made to co- operate with several metallurgical interests, the Thiogen Co. proposed to the Bureau of Mines that, along with the studies of various pro- posed methods for eliminating sulphur dioxide from smelter smoke, there should be included a study of the wet Thiogen process. In the study as outlined it was proposed to determine whether it would be technically and commercially feasible to use the, process for the recovery of elemental sulphur from the sulphur dioxide in waste smelter gases. Although there had been no large-scale work with the process, either in the laboratory or at a smelter, representatives of the metallur- gical and mining industry had shown considerable interest in the proposed method, and the desire had been expressed that a better knowledge of the possibilities of the process should be obtained. Thus, cooperation with the Thiogen Co. seemed justified by the in- terests of the metallurgical industry, and by the conservation promised by the recovery of a product of market value from what is otherwise a waste, and in some instances a serious nuisance. In accepting the responsibility for directing this investigation, the officials of the Bureau of Mines were necessarily free to conduct the work in the manner they considered necessary to determine the facts. It was also understood that any information obtained was to be made available to all who might be interested and might be printed in a Bureau of Mines report. To cover the cost of laboratory equipment and supplies, and the payment of salaries of assistants, other than Bureau of Mines employees, the Thiogen Co. in May, 1915, deposited with the cooperative metallurgical exhibit fund a sum considered sufficient to warrant starting the laboratory investi- gation. The origin and organization of this fund has been described by Clevenger and the author." In outlining the program for this investigation it was hoped that ultimately a small complete plant would be erected and the investi- gation center around the operation of the plant. However, pre- liminary to the erection of the plant, a laboratory study of the proc- ess was considered necessary, as the technical features of the process could be determined, it was believed, as satisfactorily on a smaller scale as on the scale first proposed. However, it was realized at the time that it would not be possible to determine so satisfactorily or definitely the commercial possibilities of the process on the scale of work adopted as in the larger operating plant. With this fact in mind it was planned that, if the study of the technical features on a laboratory scale gave sufficient promise of the process being commer- cially feasible, an operating unit should, if possible, be constructed later, and that more definite information concerning the commercial prospects should be determined. The investigations were started in June, 1915. In June and July work was confined entirely to small-scale laboratory tests, in which a careful study of the chemical reactions involved was made. In August, tests on a larger scale were started, and these were con- tinued until December, small-scale tests being made at the same time. On December 1, 1915, all work on the Thiogen process was discon- tinued temporarily, as the close of the exposition necessitated moving the laboratories. Work on the Thiogen process was started again in January, 1916, in the laboratories of the new mining experiment sta- tion at Berkeley, Cal., and was continued during the spring of 1916 until a point was reached where it was felt that the essential parts of the process had been carefully covered, and that some definite state- ments concerning the technical features and possibilities of the process, as given in this report, were warranted.

"INTRODUCTION In the State of Alabama few mines produce coal clean enough to be marketed directly without being washed. This is particularly true where the coal is to be used for the production of metallurgical coke. In washing plants where single-compartment jigs alone are used to treat a large range of sizes, it has been found that the washed coal finer than 1/4-inch contains a large proportion of free impurities and is much higher in ash content than are the coarser sizes. To reduce the ash content of this fine material with jigs usually entails a greet reduction in capacity and a loss of coarse coal in the refuse. This investigation, conducted by the Southern Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the Alabama By-Products Corporation, was undertaken to determine whether the fine washed coal from jigs could be economically re-treated on coal washing tables.COALS TESTEDThrough,the cooperation of the Alabama By-Products Corporation, samples of fine-sized washed coal were obtained from their washeries at Bradford and Gamma.The Bradford mine, on the Black Creek bed, yields a low-ash, medium-volatile coal with fairly good coking properties. This coal is blended with coal from the Mary Lee bed for coking purposes and compensates for the high ash content of the latter. The Black Creek bed is about 30 inches thick and seam analyses show an ash content of from 2.0 to 4.0 per cent. In the Bradford mine the undercut is about 6 inches high, so that a large proportion of fines is produced."

"Necessary Qualities There mines are located in out of the way places, where timber is scarce and its price high, the problem of protecting it from fire risk is of considerable practical importance. Scarcity of timber for mining purposes is commonly met with in the more arid parts of the country, where, also, mine timbers are most likely to become dry, and inflammable, and where, therefore, the risk from fire is accentuated. Any effective and cheap method of securing adequate protection of such timber at the lowest possible cost is worthy of careful investigation. The use of magnesite cement has been suggested in this connection.The necessary qualities for any substance for the use suggested above may be summarized as follows: It should be resistant to abrasion, and to impact and structural stresses. It should be durable when subjected to the action of the ele¬ments, and stable to any minor derangements of the base on which it is placed. It must be relatively unaffected by changes in temperature, by the action of water, and should adhere to the material on which it is placed, and it should also be free from shrinkage cracks due to setting up the material, Magnesite cement appears to fulfill the various conditions outlined above.The elasticity of such cement is the outstanding quality which makes it desirable for exterior work. It also possesses the ability to adhere to all materials in a marked degree. Its freedom from expansion and contraction after setting is one of the principal reasons for its adhesive quality. It may be applied to old brick or stone walls, even tho they have been repeatedly covered with paint, and the quality of ad-hearing to wood makes it possible to secure a weather-proof protection to the wooden casings and trim of exterior openings. The quality of adhesion and elasticity is easily proved by applying a 1/2"" layer to a 1"" board which has been first covered with metal lath. Such a board, about 8 feet long, may be repeatedly deflected about 3"" in the center without breaking the bond to the board, or causing any cracks to appear in the magnesia cement. The ability to resist fire as well as the possession of insulating qualities are also desirable characteristics of magnesia cement stucco."
