The collection and correlation of thermodynamic data concerning substances of metallurgical interest have constituted one of the major activities of the Pacific Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, at Berkeley, Calif., for the past several years. Earlier bulletins (32, 33, 34, 36, 36, 37, 38) s in this series are entitled: (1) Contributions to the Data on Theoretical Metallurgy. I. The Entropies of Inorganic Substances; (2) Contributions to the Data on Theoretical Metallurgy. II. High-Temperature Specific-Heat Equations for Inorganic Substances; (3) Contributions to the Data on Theoretical Metallurgy. III. Heats of Fusion of Inorganic Substances; (6) Contributions to the Data on Theoretical Metallurgy. VI. A Revision of the Entropies of Inorganic Substances-1935; and (7) Contributions to the Data on Theoretical Metallurgy. VII. The Thermodynamic Properties of Sulphur and its Inorganic Compounds. The present paper collects and discusses thermodynamic data relating to metal carbides and nitrides, with the view of obtaining usable heat and free energy of formation relationships. Pertinent data on both classes of substances are difficult to obtain experimentally and consequently are extremely rare; it is therefore necessary in many cases, if equations are to be derived, to introduce certain approximations and assumptions. Lack of adequate means of checking results by utilizing data of different types, such as was done frequently in the bulletins dealing with carbonates and sulphates, are readily apparent to anyone who has made even a cursory examination of the available information. Consequently, some of the relationships derived undoubtedly will be found to be inaccurate when more or better data become available. The carbonizing properties of No. 2-bed coal from the Bartoy mine and No. 5- or Miller-bed coal from the Wilkeson-Miller mine, both at Wilkeson, Pierce County, Wash., were determined by the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) method. Tests were made in the 13-inch retort at 500°, 600°, and 700° C. and in the 18¬inch retort at 800°, 900°, and 1,000° C. Fischer low-temperature and United States Steel Corporation high-temperature assays were made and the results compared with those of the BM-AGA tests at corresponding temperatures. Agglutinating and plastic properties were determined, and chemical and petrographic analyses were made. The No. 2 bed is 58.5 to 88.0 inches thick at three points sampled in the Bartoy mine. The coal is 98 percent bright and contains only a trace of fusain. A composite of three mine samples contained 13.8 percent ash. The washed sample, which was used in the tests described herein, contained 11.4 percent ash, 2.2 percent moisture, and 0.6 percent sulfur upon the as-carbonized basis and 68.4 percent fixed carbon upon the dry, mineral-matter-free basis. The heating value was 15,183 B. t.u. per pound upon the moist, mineral-matter-free basis. No. 2 therefore ranks as a high-volatile A coal and is very high in that, rank. The ash softens at 2,910° F. Except for its ash content, which is higher than the limit of 9.0 percent specified by the American Society for Testing Materials, No. 2 coal fulfills the requirements of a coking coal. It also is classed as extremely friable, the friability being 88.0 percent. The agglutinating index (7.6 for the 15 : 1 ratio of silicon carbide to coal) is high, and the plasticity as indicated by the Gieseler test (60 divisions per minute) is low for a high-volatile A coal.

Alveolar macrophages (AM) exposed to cytokines or bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) produce the free radical nitric oxide (NO·) by an inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). They also release reactive oxygen free radicals following exposure to silica dust. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether NO· is produced by rat AM and/or recruited leukocytes following the intratracheal (IT) instillation of silica. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (175 to 225 g) were IT instilled with either silica dust (10 mg/100 g body wt) or LPS (0.25 mg/100 g body wt). After 24 h, bronchoalveolar lavage cells (BALC) and lavaged lung tissue were assayed for iNOS mRNA. Cell counts of BALC and iNOS-dependent (Nw-nitro-Larginine methyl ester [L-NAME]-inhibitable) chemiluminescence generated by AM were also determined. Northern blot analysis demonstrated that the steady-state levels of BALC iNOS mRNA were significantly increased by 3-fold following IT silica and by 7-fold following IT LPS. Partially enriched fractions of either AM or leukocytes from silica-treated rats both exhibited significantly elevated iNOS mRNA in Northern analysis. iNOS-dependent chemiluminescence was significantly increased in AM by 36-fold following IT silica and by 89-fold following IT LPS. Differential counts of BALC showed that AM numbers did not change in any of the treatments; however, red blood cells increased by 30-fold following IT silica and by 23-fold following IT LPS. Total leukocytes (polymorphonuclear leukocytes plus lymphocytes) increased by 58-fold following IT silica and by 274-fold following IT LPS. The results demonstrate that AM and neutrophils iNOS steady-state mRNA levels, AM iNOS-dependent chemiluminescence, and lavagable red blood cells and leukocytes all increased following IT silica. These findings suggest that NO· production in rat AM and neutrophils is increased in response to silica. NO· has the ability to then combine with superoxide and form a highly reactive toxic species, peroxynitrite, which may be responsible in part for silica-induced lung damage.

"This paper presents results of an experimental investigation of the sampling efficiency of a blunt cylindrical sampler oriented with respect to the oncoming flow. The number of particles sampled by the cylindrical blunt sampler and an isokinetic sampler is measured using the TSI Aerodynamic Particle Sizer. A technique is described to conven the ratio of the particles sampled into the sampling efficiency. The experimental data thus obtained is then compared with the impaction model of Vincent and Mark (1982) with the empirical constant determined from our experiment.. The comparison shows excellent agreement for 0° and 90° orientation.1.0 IntroductionCylindrical dust samplers are widely used in practice to determine the concentration of the airborne particulate matter. The sampler is simply a means to collect particles from the ambient, whose concentration is subsequently measured by some size selective techniques. Gravimetric and optical techniques are the two most commonly used methods to measure the particle sizes. While impactors are used in gravimetric analysis, Aerodynamic Particle Sizer, Aerosizer. Electron microscope, Coulter Counter etc. use the optical method to measure the particle sizes. The Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS) and the Aerosizer are the new generation devices which employ the time of flight of particles within intersecting laser beams to determine the particle size.The introduction of the sampler in the free stream disturbs the flow pattern due to two distinct actions of the sampler on the fluid stream: one of them results due to the conformity of the flow to the geometry of the circular cylinder and the second one is caused by the flow into the suction orifice. If the sampler performance is determined by the number of particles entering into the sampler inlet relative to the number of particles present in the free stream, then the particle trajectory outside the sampler and into the inlet is the deterministic factor for the sampling efficiency. The particle trajectory inside the sampler is not important in this case."

"The Bureau of Mines has studied blasting practices in metal mines of the Southwest. The investigation of blasting drift rounds showed among other results, that cut-holes in ground difficult to break could be chambered to advantage under some conditions.In open--cut mines, chambering nearly all holes before blasting is the common practice. Two or more free faces are generally maintained in this type of work, and the amount of explosive necessary to break any bench or bank can usually be estimated from the yardage to be moved. However, in blasting drift or tunnel rounds only one free face is available before the cut-holes are shot, and the quantity of explosive required is generally ascertained best by trial.In addition to being the most difficult to break, the cut-holes are the most important of a drift round. When the cut-holes ""break bottom"" less work is required of the other holes, and a full break of the round is generally obtained. In ground difficult to blast, extra care and expense are justified to insure that the cut-holes ""break bottom.""At many mines the work is so organized that all blasting is done at the end of the shift, and a decided advantage would have to be gained to make chambering of the cut-holes economical. Also, in many mines blasting during the shift would not be practical. One or two holes could probably be drilled during the time necessary to do the chambering. However, under certain special conditions, such as in small operations or those where ""leasers"" or contractors are working, drill holes could be chambered should there be an advantage in doing so. Moreover, in some mines it might be practical to chamber the cut-holes at the lunch hour. In ordinary rounds the cut-holes are generally drilled by noon. It would not be necessary to tear down the drill or remove tools from the face to do this work of chambering."

Fourteen coal samples representing the Flag , Fire Clay , Whitesburg , Amburgy , Upper Elkhorn No. 3 , Upper Elkhorn No. 2 , Upper Elkhorn No. 1 , and Lower Elkhorn beds in Letcher County , Ky . , were carbonized by the Bureau of Mines - American Gas Association ( BM- AGA ) method , and yields of products and physical properties of cokes were determined . The samples tested were high- volatile A bituminous in rank , with dry , mineral - matter- free fixed - carbon contents ranging from 55.3 to 62.2 percent . Five of the samples , as received , were chemically unsuitable for metallurgical use because of excessive ash and/ or sulfur content . Generally , strength indexes of the cokes were low and all of the coals would require blending with higher rank coal to obtain satisfactory blast furnace fuel .

Experimental determinations were made of the heats of formation at 298.15 ° K of cuprous ferrite and cupric ferrite ; the heat capacity of cuprous ferrite was measured over the temperature range from 50 ° to 298 ° K and the entropy at 298.15 ° K was evaluated ; the heat contents of cuprous ferrite and cupric ferrite above 298.15 ° K were measured to 1,500 ° K and 1,100 ° K , respectively . These thermodynamic values were combined with other pertinent data to obtain heat and free energy of formation values at high temperatures . The stability of the two ferrites with respect to their constituent oxides is discussed . Thermodynamic values are included for the decomposition of cupric ferrite to form cuprous ferrite , magnetite , and oxygen .

This report presents results of a series of tests on grindability of lignites and factors that influence grindability determination. All grindability tests in this investigation were made in the standard Hardgrove test apparatus. In addition to tests on standard samples of equilibrium moisture content, grindability determinations were made on air-and oven-dried samples of lignite representing the complete range of moisture content from normal bed moisture to nearly moisture-free conditions. Grindability index for all tests was calculated both by standard method and by an alternate or "corrected" method of calculation based on directly measured weight of fine-particle material produced in the grindability test. The second method of calculation allows more satisfactorily for loss of moisture during testing of high-moisture samples.

NO MORE important question has come before the coal-mining industry in many places, especially in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania, than prevention of stream pollution by mine drainage. Available information on acid mine drainage in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania indicates that a pollution problem must be solved in any program of anthracite mine drainage. The major problem concerns satisfactory disposal of the daily average mine-water discharge of 327,000 gallons per minute (g. p. m.), or 472 million gallons per day (g. p. d.), containing a free-acid load of 431 tons or a total acid load of 934 tons a clay as H2S04. This report indicates the scope of the problem and gives some suggestions concerning its solution.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated leaching automobile catalysts with sodium cyanide (NaCN) solutions at high temperatures to recover platinum-group metals (PGM). The feed was virgin monolith rejects, used monolith, and used pellet catalysts. Leaching with a 5-pct NaCN solution for 1 h at 160° C dissolved over 97 pct of the PGM in the virgin monolith, over 85 pct of the PGM in the used monolith, and over 90 pct of the PGM in the used pellet catalyst. Over 99.8 pct of the dissolved PGM was recovered as a precipitate by heating the solution to 250° C for 1 h in an autoclave. The cyanide complexes were decomposed, and free cyanide was destroyed.

This report describes in detail a unique occurrence of fersmite, (Ca, Ce, Na) (Cb, Ti, Fe, Al)2 (0, OH, F)6, which occurs as small anhedral inclusions and intergrowths with a tantalum-free columbite found in the metamorphic complexes of Ravalli County, Mont. Chemical and crystallographic data along with the physical and optical properties agree in general with those given in the original description of fersmite from the Ural Mountains of Russia. X-ray diffraction data not given in the original description and more specific optical data have been determined. The Montana fersmite, now established as the second occurrence of this rare calcium-columbate mineral, was discovered during a routine Bureau of Mines mineralogical examination of a prospector's sample.

To determine the feasibility of removing nonferrous metal impurities from automobile scrap by thermal treatment in a rotary kiln, the Bureau of Mines conducted four series of tests with synthetic scrap mixtures heated at various temperatures under oxidizing and reducing conditions. The treated scrap mixtures were melted in an electric-arc furnace and cast into small ingots for impurity evaluation. Analyses showed that the ingots were essentially free of residual metal impurities except for copper. Test data indicated that in an oxidizing atmosphere the percentage of copper removed increased with treatment temperature. Percent of copper removed in a reducing atmosphere was found not to be temperature dependent. A significant finding was that copper was embrittled under some of the operating conditions and was mechanically removed by fragmentation.

Objective Develop field measurement and computer modeling methods to predict the potential for hang-ups and structural failures in underground mine ore paws. Background Analysis of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident statistics has identified ore pass hazards as a significant safety problem in underground metal mines in the United Stales. Recent ore pass failures have underlined the lack or ore pass design methods ant1 standards available to both MSHA and mine engineers. Injury and fatality data for the 20-ycar period between 1975 and 1095 show that nearly 75% of the injuries were directly or indirectly related to pulling or freeing ore pass chutes, the use of hand tools, falls or broken rock, and structural failures or chutes or gates and ore pass walls.

Urban refuse, cellulosic wastes, and sewage sludge have been converted to heavy oil by heating under pressure with carbon monoxide and steam. Conversions of the organic matter to oil, water, and gas have averaged near 90 percent at temperatures of 250° to 400° C and pressures of 1,500 to 5,000 psi. The yield of oil, based on the dry organic matter of the waste materials, is usually near 40 percent. This is the equivalent of more than 2 barrels of oil per ton of dry, ash-free waste material. The oil from urban refuse and cellulosic wastes has a sulfur content near 0.1 percent. This low sulfur content makes the oil from refuse a desirable source of fuel oil.

The Bureau of Mines performed laboratory experiments to evaluate the triboelectric effect of particulate-laden gas streams on polyethylene pipe at various velocity, humidity, dust-size, and dust-load conditions. Charges in excess of 10 kV were produced on the outside and inside surfaces of laboratory pipe samples, when exposed to 40 pct relative humidity (RH) gas stream containing coal dust. However, no charges were produced in laboratory tests that duplicated the over 75 pct RH and dust-free gas streams found in working underground pipelines. Bare cop- per wire, which is wound around the polyethylene pipe in a 1-ft (31-cm) spacing and grounded, eliminated the charge on the outside surface of the pipe, but not on the inside of the pipe surface,

A total of 17 mine gallery fire tests (23 including sub-tests) were completed during this report period (10/1/76 - 11/30/77), directed at identifying a hazardous timber-set fuel-loading in a mine passageway that is otherwise free of combustibles. Results of these initial tests show that the capability of a particular fuel loading for propagating a fire is dependent upon the imposed ventilation air velocity and the ignition intensity, although this dependency needs to be better defined. It is also apparent that care must be taken when relating gallery test fire behavior to actual mine fire behavior, because of the restrictive length of the gallery. Present data indicate that some modification to the instrumentation scheme may be advantageous before proceeding with future tests.

In 1939, the author made a survey of relative gravity in the Mediterranean-basin, 41° 35,5' to 41° 56.3' northern latitude and 0° 10,3' to 0° 28' longitude, referred to Mt. Mario. Ten stations were covered; 25 other stations had been occupied in the vicinity of Rome and in Albanian mountains during previous years. The new measurements revealed gravity anomalies ranging within the following limits: (1) With a free-air reduction, between + 29 and + 120 mgl., average + 60 mgl.; and (2) with a Bouguer reduction, between + 22 and + 87 mgl., average + 41.5 mgl. - V. This work is a continuation of a program of study of the measurement and correlation of fundamental thermodynamic data inaugurated several years ago by the United States Bureau of Mines. Previous bulletins in this series were concerned with (1) The Entropies of Inorganic Substances (66),3 (2) High-Temperature Specific-Heat Equations for Inorganic Substances (67), (3) The Free Energies of Vaporization and Vapor Pressures of Inorganic Substances (68), (4) Metal Carbonates-Correlations and Applications of Thermodynamic Properties (71), (5) Heats of Fusion of Inorganic Substances (69), and (6) A Revision of the Entropies of Inorganic Substances-1935 (70). The present bulletin has as its primary purpose the correlation of the thermodynamic properties of elementary sulphur and its inorganic compounds and the presentation, after careful consideration of all available information, of a self-consistent system of thermodynamic relationships for these substances. It is believed that such a set of relationships, concerning substances of such great metallurgical importance as sulphur, sulphur oxides, hydrogen sulphide, metal sulphides, and metal sulphates, is of considerable value in indicating directions of possibly profitable experimental work and in clarifying subjects of technical interest upon which direct experimental information is difficult and expensive to obtain. It cannot be doubted that many problems of technical importance that at the outset appear almost hopelessly complex or obscure either may be solved, if enough information is available, or the specific lacking information clearly indicated by the adoption of the thermodynamic viewpoint. This has been demonstrated many times in the work of the Metallurgical Division, Pacific Experiment Station, Berkeley, Calif. Even when only crude basic information is available, a semiquantitative picture often may be developed by thermodynamic means in which general trends and approximate limits of a proposed process or modification of practice may be clearly portrayed and thus used as guides in further considerations and experimentation.

"One of the most important wartime activities of the Bureau of Mines was the search for new sources of mineral necessary to the prosecution of the war. Part of that effort was in the form of metallurgical service extended to other government agencies engaged in purchasing and stock piling some of the more critical and strategic materials.Fluorite was one of the materials stock piled by the Metals Reserve Company. The fluorite was usually in the form of coarse metallurgical con¬centrate purchased in the United States and abroad. The material was stock¬piled to insure an adequate reserve of fluorite for the metallurgical industries. The domestic production of metallurgical fluorite containing a minimum effective calcium fluoride content of 55 percent,4/ however, gradually increased until production was at least equal to consumption. The stock-piled metallurgical fluorite, therefore, soon became a surplus commodity.On the other hand, the supply of acid-grade fluorite, containing a minimum of 97.5 percent calcium fluoride and n maximum of 1.5 percent silica,5/ was never entirely adequate. Increased consumption of acid-grade material in the aluminum, petroleum, and chemical industries kept that material on the critical list during the war.Under the circumstances, it was felt that a study of the possibility of producing acid-grade fluorite from the metallurgical stock piles would be of some benefit to the war effort. Consequently, samples of fluorite from several of the Metals Reserve Company stock piles were tested by the Bureau of Mines at the request of the War Production Board.Two groups of samples were submitted for testing. One consisted of metallurgical fluorite purchased from Mexico and stock-piled in the El Paso and Laredo, Texas, stock piles of the Metals Reserve Company. The second group of samples was from the stock piles at Gila, N. Mex.The sample submitted from the El Paso stock pile consisted of about 5,000 pounds of minus 4-inch material. Mineralogically, the sample consisted of fluorite contaminated by calcite, chert, quartz, and small amounts of iron and alumina. Although some of the fluorite was reasonably free from gangue at minus 1-inch, much of it remained locked in sizes as fine as 65-mesh.The Laredo sample was about 5,000 pounds of material from five different piles. The samples from each stock pile, A to E, inclusive, were analyzed separately to determine whether the grade of the material in the piles varied markedly. As there was little difference in the analyses, the samples were combined in proportion to the tonnage represented to make a composite sample for testing. The composite sample consisted of fluorite with small amounts of quartz, calcite, and barite. Most of the fluorite was the dark-colored, opaque variety. A small amount of iron-oxide staining was present, and traces of muscovite, clay, pyrite, and tourmaline were noted. The quartz was present as crystals in vugs, and as finely disseminated grains in the fluorite. The druzy quartz and the calcite were free at minus 10-mesh, but the disseminated grains, some of which were 1 to 15 microns in size, were not entirely free at minus 270-mesh. A petrographic estimate indicated that 65 percent of the silica was locked in the 150- to 200-mesh."
