The question, of the pathogenesis of pneumokoniosis is very important not only from the social and economic points of view but also from the purely biological. The study of the pathogenesis of the disease leads to fascinating problems of cytology and cytochemistry. Two problems present themselves for examination from an analytical and critical point of view: 1. The first reactions of the alveolar walls to inhaled dusts. 2. The precise nature of the action of mineral dusts.

The advent of new methods of roasting, “flash roasting and fluidisation”, which are now under development, combined with the use of oxygen-enriched air, may markedly increase the SO2 content of roaster smokes. Skogmo suggests that the production of smokes containing as much as 50 per cent SO2 should be feasible. The use of flash smelting processes may well enable a similar increase in the SO2 content of smelter smokes to be made. In this event the recovery of sulphur would be greatly cheapened and the process might well be much more economic, even if allowance is made for the cost of generating the oxygen

The object of the paper is to describe the standards of quality that should be specified in ordering material ordinarily required for colliery use, and also the qualities most suitable for particular purposes. Tables are presented of British Standard tests for wrought iron grades A, B and C, Admiralty tests for iron in chain, the quality of material for wheels and axles, and the composition and mechanical properties of wrought iron, Armco (ingot) iron and drawbar-gear steel. "The absence of homogeneity, in dust-clouds underground indicates the use of a method in which the volume of air sampled is an appreciable proportion of the total volume under consideration. Of the available methods, only the impinger and gravimetric techniques seem to comply with this requirement. In practice, greater efficiency of collection of the smaller particles is possible by the use of a gravimetric filter than with the impinger. For this reason if, as seems desirable, a standard method of sampling be sought, the adoption of a gravimetric technique is to be recommended.Provided that the amount of dust collected is reasonably large, the paper filter would seem to be preferable to the solid crystal type of filter on account of its greater convenience in use.Alternative methods of sampling are desirable to cover the wide range of practical conditions."

Redox front processes in rocks are important in the context of both radioactive waste disposal and the development of orebodies. Results are presented from a study of the distribution of uranium and thorium and the natural decay series equilibrium about redox fronts in a granite at the Criffel pluton and Craignair quarry, Dalbeattie in southwest Scotland. The results are considered in the context of large scale uranium aqueous transport in the region and compared with those from a previous study of highly developed redox fronts at Pocos de Caldas, Brazil. Results show that the Criffel pluton has experienced a recent and rapid removal of uranium from the uppermost section of the granite whereas thorium has remained relatively immobile. The radium and uranium distributions indicate that diffusion processes probably control the distribution of radionuclides about the front. These processes are similar to those observed at Pocos de Caldas. The trends of concentration and activity ratio about the Dalbeattie redox front are less pronounced than those at Pocos de Caldas owing to the shorter time available for the process and the lower intensity of weathering at Dalbeattie.

The purpose of the cut is to provide a free face to which the remainder of a development or breasting round can break. The results of field testing in drifts and at a quarry face were used as a basis for a description of the rock breakage and flushing mechanism in the cut. It was concluded that the important features of a cut design are proper hole spacing, sufficient relief volume, drilling accuracy and relief holes slightly longer than the planned length of the round. The void space provided by the relief holes should be about 15% of the cut volume, with more required in weak, highly fissured rocks. The importance of drilling accuracy increases with round length, an error being magnified by the small blasthole spacing. The first hole pulls only about 20% of the round length, 4-6 holes having to be fired before the cut is pulled close to its design depth. The first four blastholes should be fired with a minimum inter-hole delay of 100 ms to provide progressive relief of burden and avoid the superimposition of ground vibrations. The earliest-firing charge should be closest to the relief area and act laterally, while the first of the vertically-fired charges to be detonated should be the uppermost. Problems during cut-pulling include sympathetic detonation, dynamic pressure desensitisation, charge disruption and freezing of the cut

The South Nottinghamshire Area has not been greatly troubled by spontaneous combustion until the last few years, during which the Blackshale Seam has been developed and exploited. The problem was first encountered at a colliery which was heavily preoccupied with a major reconstruction scheme, and with the sudden appearance of a completely new hazard both men and management had to adapt themselves very quickly to meet the situation. The paper contributed to the Symposium by the South Nottinghamshire Area illustrates the problems by reference to actual incidents, and shows how the lessons learned from them have been applied to the shaping of future policy on the avoidance and treatment of spontaneous combustion.

Diesel powered equipment is currently used extensively in mining and tunnelling operations around the world due to its mobility, flexibility and through selective application to enhance productivity. However, the increased use of diesel equipment has exacerbated the pollutant load (including heat, humidity, exhaust gases and particulates) placed upon the environmental systems of many underground operations. This expansion in the use of diesel equipment has prom pted researchers to evaluate m easure ment and control technology. This paper reviews the recent research conducted in various countries.

The paper investigates the historical information relating to spontaneous heatings which have occurred within the area from 1955 to date. From this information the seams most liable are identified and the location within the workings is enumerated, together with the possible reason for the occurrence of the heatings. Details are given of the precautions taken during development, working and withdrawal. Sampling procedures are outlined and the interpretation of the results is discussed. Reference is made to the various types of material and techniques employed in both preventing and combating heatings and examples are given of their relative cost and the operational experience obtained. Special observations are made on the changes in mining techniques and their influence on spontaneous combustion.

The calcine consists principally of ZnO and ZnFe2O4, which occur as banded and porous grains, together with lesser amounts of Zn2SiO4, Zn-Fe-Pb silicate, sphalerite, quartz, PbSO4 and Fe2O3. Al is present in solid solution in most of the Fe-bearing phases and also as residual aluminosilicate minerals from the original concentrate. Si occurs mostly as Zn2SiO4, Zn-Fe-Pb silicate and as residual silicate minerals. As is commonly found in the ZnFe2O4, Fe2O3 and Zn-Fe-Pb silicate phases. The major As carrier may be calcium arsenate particles less than 1 micrometre in size which are dispersed throughout the calcine. The neutral leach residue consists mainly of ZnFe2O4 and precipitated masses of iron gel-silica gel. Lesser amounts of ZnO, Zn2SiO4, Zn-Fe-Pb silicate, PbSO4, sphalerite, Pb-K-jarosite and basic zinc sulphate are also present. Al occurs in minor concentrations in most of the Fe-bearing phases and in the Zn-Fe-Pb silicate. The residual aluminosilicates are also an important Al carrier. The major As carrier is the precipitated iron gel-silica gel phase, but some As is also present in the Zn-Fe-Pb silicate, ZnFe2O4 and Fe2O3 phases. Silicon is divided about equally between the iron gel-silica gel, Zn2SiO4, Zn-Fe-Pb silicate and residual silicate minerals. The weak acid leach residue is generally similar to the neutral leach residue except for its reduced content of ZnO and basic zinc sulphate.

Agre, John Newman, Gossart and Roberts, Francis Ellis, John Dillon and Mr. Wood (refrigerating lamp); 1836-1843 developments, notably of Mueseler lamps; 1844-1866, including lamps of the Davy, Clanny, Boty, Eloin and other types; 1867-1879, including the Gray lamp; 1880-1887, including the Marsaut lamp; and 1888-1913. Detailed reference is made to the findings of various relevant Royal Commissions and appendices include a list of the safety-lamps described in an appendix to the 1886 report and a publications list. The paper was prepared for the International congress of mining, metallurgy, applied mechanics and economic geology to have been held in London in July 1915. The paper notes that the extraction of 22% of the remaining workable reserves in the north western area involves a risk of spontaneous combustion higher than is normal in Britain. Mining systems have been tailor made in order to minimize the risk of spontaneous heatings, and these systems are described. Well-proved methods of combating spontaneous combustion are referred to, as well as the limitations which now apply to them as the result of the introduction of modern mining techniques. A substantial part of the paper is devoted to the circumstances in which spontaneous combustion occurs underground in the north western area. Several actual incidents which have occurred in the last few years, along with the practical application of the lessons learned, are described. Of particular note are: a) the procedure adopted in the north western area to equalize pressure differences across stoppings using pressure chambers, and b) a retreat mining system, primarily designed to deal with high methane emission and steep gradients, which also affords some protection against spontaneous combustion.

A wide variety of mining conditions exists within the South Midlands Area and across this range of conditions more than one half of the mines are highly susceptible to spontaneous combustion. Two thick seams in which the greatest risk exists are described and illustrated. The different heatings which take place are categorized by the locations at which they occur in the mines: additional special cases not easily categorized by location are discussed separately. The discussion for each category of heating follows the pattern of: (i) the reasons why it occurs; (ii) when it arises the means by which it is fought, and (iii) the preventive measures taken in an attempt to avoid its occurrence. Relatively new factors which may affect the incidence of heatings are highlighted and suggestions are made which may assist in reducing the number of incidents in the Area. A new method of continuous sampling, analysis and recording is described and mention made of an original method of interpreting carbon monoxide results with the aid of the computer. The first results from this work show that an early warning is given of an adverse change in trend several weeks earlier than with the present methods. Lastly, suggestions are made about the direction in which research might proceed to assist in reducing the special hazards created by several features inherent in the present methods of mining.

The connexion between the Kent and the Continental coalfields on the one hand and the western British coalfields on the other has been for many years a controversial subject between geologists. These coalfields were once considered as detached portions of a former extensive sheet of Carboniferous deposits, but some geologists seem now to incline to the view that they were never connected. The writer hopes to show that the problem is one of the most difficult of geological investigations; that we are still far from a perfect solution; and that both of the extreme theories must be set aside. The physiography of NW Europe during the Carboniferous, with its various generations of earlier folds, is outlined and the features of the Lower and Upper Carboniferous anticlines and synclines discussed, followed by consideration of the denudation of the coalfields and local descriptions of the Malvernian range and Usk anticline, the Pennine chain, the Shropshire coalfield and the Kent coalfield. An attempt is made to trace the transverse Midland anticlines southwards and to deal with the intervening syncline: for example, if the dissymmetrical profile of the Pennine Chain holds good at its southern end then the syncline west of the chain must be deeper than the syncline east of it (the Kent syncline), and in this syncline the deepest part must be at its south-eastern corner, and therefore south of the diagonal ridge. T here is some actual evidence of the existence of Coal-Measures in this syncline, as the results of the Batsford and Burford borings prove. The hypothetical character of most of the conclusions will prove, beyond any doubt, how fa r geologists still are from a perfect settlement of this problem, and how much this settlement is dependent on the more or less advanced state of knowledge regarding all the geological features of these coalfields and of the surrounding country

Respect for mining in Botswana is long-standing. This article looks at Africa's most transparent mining regime and some of its ambitious plans. Botswana's mining industry value is forecast to average 5.2% growth from 2014-2018 with solid growth for the diamond sector and acceleration of coal production. Respect for the country's mining regime is maintained in the Fraser Institute 2014 annual survey where Botswana occupies the 26th position of 122 administrations. A negative correlation exists between sphalerite composition and gold content when gold is transported as Au(HS)2(-); however, there are spatial and temporal differences within a single deposit. A previous model for the formation of volcanogenic massive-sulphide deposits within thermally intensifying and waning hydrothermal sytems in much the same way as is observed around modern sea-floor vents is supported. The results also emphasise that recognition of the mechanisms of gold transport in ancient deposits depends critically on an understanding of their mineralogy and stratigraphy
