Introduction It is the purpose of this paper to discuss a number of the metallurgical improvements in the technology of copper-nickel ore treatment which have been introduced during recent years in the plants of ?the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited. In common with other ore treatment processes, the procedure for extracting nickel and copper is changing almost continuous! y. These changes are necessitated by reason of changes in ore grades and characteristics, rising material and labour charges, and the constant drive to maximize metal recovery and to minimize production costs. It is not possible to present a comprehensive list of all the changes made, and only a selected number of the improvements in the milling, smelting, and refining operations are covered. It should be clearly understood that some phases of the procedures described have been pioneered by others in kindred fields and due acknowledgment is given to their foresight and efforts. Articles have been published over the years describing the operations of the International Nickel Company plants and the reader is referred to the Engineering and Mining Journal, Vol. 130, No. 9, November 10th, 1930, and to the Canadian Mining Journal, Vol. 58, No. 11, November, 1937, and Vol. 67, No. 5, May, 1946. ABSTRACT A revised equilibrium approach to evaluate dipper-ground interactions during the dig cycle of ultra-class mining shovels operating in soft unblasted uniform ground conditions is presented. A review of previous approaches, leading to an outline of the modifications and ground condition considerations, is made in support of the reasoning and basis for the derivation presented. An analytical solution is provided to the scenario of a cable shovel dipper digging in soft ground material such as oil sands.

Over the past twenty years, steelmakers have introduced improved practices for reducing the inclusion content of steels. The success of these practice changes can be monitored in a variety of ways. Chemical analysis of the bulk sulphur and oxygen contents provides a relatively simple means to assess the impact of these changes. However, microscopical test methods are still needed to assess the nature of the inclusions present. Traditional chartbased measurement methods have wide acceptability, and their data are well understood by both purchaser and producer for heat acceptance purposes. However, these methods do have inherent weaknesses which limit their usefulness for quality control, SPC, and database applications. Image analysis-based chart measurements are an improvement over manually generated chart ratings, but the data still do not lend themselves to databases and statistical comparisons. ASTM Committee E-4 on Metallography has developed a stereologicallybased image analysis standard test method, E 1245, which provides the necessary data in a form which is easily databased and analyzed statistically. This paper describes E 1245 and shows how data from different heats and melting practices can be compared statistically to ascertain valid test differences.

"Biooxidation of gold ores or concentrates could be a very attractive alternative to pressure oxidation (POX) or roasting to liberate the gold grains from various sulfides. Crushed heap bioleaching was successful in US and many operations using tank bioleaching of gold concentrate are currently running around the world. Many parameters need to be considered during the project of sulfidic refractory gold ore process. Capital and operation costs are among the most important ones. Run-of-mine heap biooxidation could be very inexpensive and the smaller the crush size (particle size), the more expensive the capital and operating costs for biooxidation application are expected. The capital cost of biooxidation could be a fraction of the cost for building POX plant or roaster and the operating cost could be 1/3 of POX or roasting depending on the method utilized. A new biooxidation process, Sand Farming, is introduced as an alternative to POX and tank biooxidation process. A relatively coarser particle size (P80 = 650 µm) of the process benefits the low cost of grinding against the conventional grinding size (P80 = 75 µm) for other options. The cost of Sand Farming is less than 40% of that of pressure oxidation with comparable gold recovery from the downstream process. This paper will review the laboratory scale testwork for various biooxidation process of sulfidic refractory gold ores and concentrates and provide the economic evaluation showing the biooxidation could be the most economic method without much sacrificing the overall gold recovery. INTRODUCTIONThe decreased availability and lower grade of raw materials has motivated industries to consider recovering values utilizing low cost process options. The process may treat high grade concentrates or submill grade ores that cannot be processed economically by conventional milling-flotation or leaching. Sulfidic refractory gold ores/concentrates have been economically processed by roasting, pressure oxidation, and biooxidation in stirred tank reactor. The process selection is based on a series of studies including multi-year long ore characterization and metallurgical investigations."

"IntroductionLocationTHE PROPERTY of Aunor Gold Mines, Limited is in Deloro township, Ontario, about three miles southeast of the town of Timmins. It consists of a group of eleven claims located between those of Buffalo-Ankerite Gold Mines, Limited, and Delnite Gold Mines, Limited.GeologyThe ore zone at the Aunor mine consists of a narrow band of fine grained pillowed andesite, irregular bands of 'brown to green carbonated andesite, and lenticular bodies of quartz feldspar porphyry. The zone strikes N.80°E., dips 60 North, and has been traced for 5,000 feet across the property. It varies in width from 0 to 250 feet and is bounded on the north and south by masses of dark bluish-grey tale chlorite schist. These schist bands have widths up to 500 feet.The ore occurs in a series of parallel and branching veins confined to the limits of the zone. These veins tend to terminate and die out on the footwall schist contact, striking generally parallel with the ore zone. In wide sections of the zone, 150 to 250 feet, the veins range in width up •to 3.5 feet and may occur in two or three horizons across the width of the zone, each mineable independent of the other. They tend to dip a little flatter than the general dip of the zone. Where the zone is narrow, the veins are so closely spaced and numerous they can be mined together and in some places the complete zone has been mined from schist to schist."

An alumina-silica coating was deposited on a nickel substrate by sol-gel process, and the structures and composition were evaluated, The sols were made from aluminium and silicon alkoxide, and an acid catalyst including HCl, To produce adherent silica coatings on nickel, various additives such as surfactant, viscose additive and drying control chemical additives were introduced to the system, and appropriate drying and firing cycles were applied after dipping in solution. The hot corrosion and oxidation resistance of the coating at different temperatures were investigated, The structure and uniformity of the coatings were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), The results indicate that a uniform coating of alumina silica can be produced on a nickel substrate by optimizing the composition and process variables of the sol. Coatings can protect substrates from oxidation and hot corrosion at different temperature up to 1000°C, but is not very effective for hot-corrosion resistance at 1000°C.

"This paper describes, for the first time, a patented method of extracting sodium sulphate from a natural deposit in Western Canada. The method resembles, but is not, strictly speaking, solution mining. The fact that a plant based on this method has been in successful operation since late 1969 will be of added interest. The deposit in question is located near Metiskow, Alberta, and conventional surface recovery methods could not be applied because of heavy concentrations of mud. Considerable pilot work went into the separation and recovery process on which the plant operation is based. The history of the industry is covered briefly as background to this development. Today it is clear that the method has broader application within the industry and, in concept, may generate interest in many other applications."

"The copper-molybdenum property of Brenda Mines Limited is located in the Okanagan district of British Columbia, approximately 25 miles west of Kelowna. The Okanagan Valley is a resort and fruit-growing area, and therefore pollution control measures are more stringent than in some remote areas.The Brenda plant began production in April 1970 and is operated at a rate of 24,000 tons per day. The plant site is located at an elevation of 4,800 feet, which is approximately 3,600 feet above the level of Okanagan Lake. The site is in the Okanagan drainage basin.The major consideration in the design of the system was the prohibition of any downstream discharge. It was therefore necessary to redaim as much water as possible and to minimize the addition of fresh water to the system. The maintenance of a water balance is of critical importance.This paper will outline the major design criteria for the systems and the site investigations which were carried out. The design and construction of the facilities will be de-scribed and current operating experience will be outlined."

"Colloidal silica in Key Lake’s Solvent Extraction (SX) feed solutions has presented an operational problem for the mill throughout its history. The colloidal silica stabilizes aqueous continuous emulsions, resulting in elevated solvent losses and operational downtime. Through the years, many attempts have been made to solve this problem, but no viable solutions were found. By revisiting an idea dating back to the 1979 feasibility study and re-evaluating it under current operating conditions, a practical solution was achieved. This paper discusses Key Lake’s history around colloidal silica removal, starting with coagulation using a polyethylene oxide polymer (PEO), and ending with coagulation using a polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymer. The results of a mill trial using POLYSIL® RM1250 introduced at doses up to 300 ppm into the counter current decantation (CCD) circuit to clarify SX feed solutions are discussed with a focus on the benefits to SX.INTRODUCTION Colloidal silica has historically been a significant operational problem in the Key Lake mill. Silica originates from clays in the ore as well as concrete backfill intermixed with the ore resulting from the mining method used at Key Lake’s ore source, the McArthur River mine. The silica is dissolved as silicic acid into solution in the mill’s sulphuric acid leaching circuit. Once in solution, silicic acid polymerizes (Hearn, Smethurst, & Boskovic, 2016) forming a fine suspension of stable colloidal particles. These silica colloids are unaffected by flocculants and sand filtration reporting to the pregnant leach solution (PLS) as a fine turbidity in solution. Silica concentrations typically ranged from 700 to 1200 mg/L Si in the PLS fed to SX. Throughout Key Lake’s history, silica interactions in the Solvent Extraction (SX) process have made SX a mill bottleneck and a source of significant reagent costs."

"ST Equipment & Technology, LLC (STET) has developed a processing system based on tribo-electrostatic belt separation that provides the mineral processing industry a means to beneficiate fine materials with an entirely dry technology. In contrast to other electrostatic separation processes that are typically limited to particles greater than 75 µm in size, the triboelectric belt separator is ideally suited for separation of very fine (<1 µm) to moderately coarse (300 µm) particles with very high throughput. The high efficiency multi-stage separation through internal charging/recharging and recycle results in far superior separations that can be achieved with a conventional single-stage free-fall tribo-electrostatic separator. The triboelectric belt separator technology has been used to separate a wide range of materials including mixtures of glassy aluminosilicates/carbon, calcite/quartz, talc/magnesite, and barite/quartz. Separation results are presented for selected industrial mineral sources. An economic comparison of using the tribo-electrostatic belt separation versus conventional flotation for barite / quartz separation illustrates the advantages of dry processing for minerals.INTRODUCTIONThe lack of access to fresh water is becoming a major factor affecting the feasibility of mining projects around the world. According to Hubert Fleming, former global director for Hatch Water, “Of all the mining projects in the world that have either been stopped or slowed down over the past year, it has been, in almost 100% of the cases, a result of water, either directly or indirectly” (Blin et al., 2013). Dry mineral processing methods offer a solution to this looming problem."

Mechanical properties of the as-cast and heat-treated alloys have been related to constitution, determined by x-ray diffraction and microscopic methods. Start-up of a Hall-Heroult cell is a delicate task that can affect pot performance and pot life. Modem practices for high amperage cells involve preheating the lining before the molten electrolyte is poured in. Different preheating methods and heat-up schedules are used throughout the industry, and the optimum between a short start-up and damage minimization to the cell is elusive. Direct electrical coke-bed preheating is one of the most common techniques. This practice typically results in a non-uniform surface temperature distribution and can generate detrimental thermal gradients in the cathode blocks. Numerical modeling is an invaluable tool to study this complex problem and can help improve the preheating procedures. The modeling of the mechanical response of the lining is critical to detect risks of cathode block cracking or the development of gaps where liquids could leak into. Taking into account the baking of ramming paste, the quasi-brittle nature of carbon and the contact interfaces between different materials are examples of key elements to consider. A finite element slice model of a cell was built and simulations of different electrical preheating scenarios were performed using the inhouse code FESh++ to demonstrate what can be learned through thermo-chemomechanical modeling. The potential industrial application of the model is discussed.

Why A Friction Hoist? B EFORE discussing the equipment, it would be instructive to review the factors that influenced the management of Opemiska Cop-per Mines to purchase a friction hoist rather than a conventional double drum hoist. The mine required that 250 tons per hour be hoisted from a depth of 2,100 feet. They also specified that the top speed should not exceed 1800 feet per minute. A study was made to determine the effect of increasing concentrations of dissolved oxygen on the floatability of galena pyrite and chalcopyrite. Adsorption, flotation and contact-angle tests were done in deoxygenated, in air-saturated and in oxygen-saturated solutions. The results showed that the adsorption of collector increased as the concentration of oxygen increased. Adsorption followed the exponential law r = kC'/"• Discontinuities in the curves were observed after the adsorption of several monolayers of collector. Although adsorption increased with increasing oxygen concentration, the floatability of the pyrite minerals did not increase, because oxidation had adverse effects on the floatability of these minerals. The floatability of galena was maximum in oxygen-saturated solutions, pyrite was depressed and chalcopyrite was also slightly depressed. Contact-angle tests proved that a bubble could not be attached to large flat surfaces in deoxygenated solutions, because sufficient surface free energy was not available for adhesion after the deformation of the bubble. In the presene of air, all the minerals yielded the same maximum angle of 72 degrees, characteristic of isopropyl xanthate.

Abstract A brief history of the electric arc furnace process of steel-making is given. The greater relative importance of this method of steel manufacture to the Canadian steel industry, as compared with its importance in the steel industry of the United States, is shown. The scope of the process is outlined and brief mention is made of the difficulty of obtaining melting stock low in alloy content. The physical chemistry of steel-making is discussed at length in simple terms, with emphasis on oxidation, de-oxidation, and the role of hydrogen. Carbide-type and silicon-type slags are described and the particular usefulness of each is outlined. The importance of various factors in the melting practice is evaluated on the basis of practical experience. Introduction Although electric furnace steels constitute only a small portion of the total weight of steel used in industrial operations, their importance is relatively much greater than is indicated by comparative tonnage figures. Tool steels, which are vital to all industry, are made almost exclusively by the basic electric arc furnace process, as are stainless steels, valve steels, and the higher alloy types of the class usually referred to as "alloy steels&apos;. For many applications where steel other than electric furnace quality is often used, and when first cost is secondary to performance in service, the extra steel cost of electric furnace quality material is usually returned with interest by consistently longer service life. The electric furnace is pre-eminent in the quality alloy steel field because of the control that may be exercised over conditions of oxidation, de-oxidation, and temperature, the fundamental operations in steel making.

Iron ores concentration at Russia’s operations is carried out using conventional flow sheets. They comprise the two-four stage grinding followed by one-two stage magnetic separation. This results in the maximum recovery of magnetite to concentrate and the tailings generation. The final concentrate is generated only during the last stage of magnetic separation. Technologically, this flow sheet layout is not effective at recovering the liberated magnetite grains during grinding to the resulting concentrate. Advanced models of magnetic separators do not allow for the selective separation of the tailings and the portion of the resulting iron ore concentrate. Magnetic product which is the ore mixture of the liberated magnetite grains, high grade and low grade intergrowths is directed to the next grinding stage. In this case, regrinding of the liberated magnetite occurs. In addition, the performance of hydrocyclones during classification in closed grinding circuits is poor. Their classification efficiency does not provide the material separation in accordance with the size. In this case, simultaneous separation in accordance with the density occurs. The quartz particles with the size of 300 mm have similar velocity and trajectory like the particles of magnetite with the size of 60 mm. As a result, light and coarser intergrowths report to the overflow and free heavy magnetite grains report to underflow and return to regrinding (“the density effect”). This resulted in a significant increase of a mill circulating load, the decrease in the feed throughput and higher power consumption. In this connection, the development of iron ore concentrate stage recovery with the focus on gradual liberation of the intergrowths is getting much attention. Gravity concentration technique, particularly, spiral separation is effective at solving the problem of stage recovery not only the dump waste product but also high grade magnetite concentrates at the early concentration stages. This can be attributed to a significant difference in magnetite (4.9-5.2 g/cm3) and host minerals (quartz 2.7 g/cm3) densities, which is the principal during gravity concentration. The test work on concentration of various products samples from current operations (the mills discharges, concentrates from various stages of wet magnetic separation and cyclones underflows) was carried out. Spiral separators SV-500 and ShV-500 manufactured by Spirit LLC were used for the test work. High grade iron ore concentrate (69.05% Fe) was generated during primary wet magnetic separation concentrate concentration using a spiral separator. During the concentration of mills discharges the content of iron in the resulting concentrates and middlings of wet magnetic separation II stage was 64.5% and 64.6%, respectively. The recovery of iron to the concentrates of spiral separation was 33.6-42.0%. The studies presented demonstrate that by using spiral separation for iron-bearing ores concentration, you can separate magnetite liberated grains at the early concentration stages, decrease their regrinding and circulating loads in grinding circuits. This process is able to improve the overall recovery and economics of iron ores concentration process.

THE cinnabar deposits of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company&apos;s Pinchi Lake property, situated near Fort St. James, B.C., were discovered and reported on by a Dominion Government geological party in 1937. Claims were staked by a group of local prospectors and, later, the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, took an option on the property. By the fall of 1939, exploration work had indicated ore of commercial quantity and grade, and laboratory tests had shown that standard methods of reduction, namely, roasting of the ore, followed by condensation of the mercury vapour produced, would result in satisfactory recovery. In June, 1940, construction of a 50-ton unit arranged for wood firing was completed and operation commenced. The installation consisted of a 46 in. by 60 ft. rotary kiln (see Figure 1) followed by a 14-in. Sirocco cyclone, a cast-iron condenser unit, and a 1,700 c.f.m. fan, exhausting to a stack. Other equipment included a 9 in. by 18 in. Denver jaw crusher with the necessary bins and feeders. As the need for mercury was urgent, because of war requirements, construction of a duplicate unit was begun almost immediately. This first extension started operation in January, 1941, and the plant was then capable of treating about 150 tons of ore daily.

The efficient purification of soldering waste material can be achieved in a single operational step by the electrolytic refining in pure hydrochloric acid - tin-chloride media. The complex formation of the ionic species may offer a beneficial level of natural inhibition. Using the PCR (periodic current reversal) technology, is efficient in affecting the morphology of the cathodic deposit. In order to optimize the process, the investigation of the solution stability and the electrode reactions is essential. The natural tendency of the Sn(II) oxidation and precipitation can be overcome by properly controlling the concentration of the main components and the ratio of Sn(IV)/Sn(II) in the electrolyte solution. Polarization curves were obtained for different concentrations tin and hydrochloric acid. Conclusions referring to the electrode reaction were derived from the overvoltage - current plots. The morphology of the deposit can be correlated with the exchange current density, also determined from the polarization curves. The cathodic current efficiency and the morphology of deposited metal are affected by the distribution of tin species and the principal electrolysis parameters.

While this paper is directed towards the ?Bellambie? type of rope attachment, the principles can be applied to any brand of rope fitting however, it is a only a broad outline and the specific installation and maintenance procedures can be obtained from the attachment supplier. The types of attachment to be discussed are:- ?Thimble Type rope cappel ?Wedge Type cappel ?WRC Rope Clamp ? (Rope Glands) ??Hoist and Balance Rope Sockets In each case, the assembly and stripping (disassembly) plus the basic maintenance procedures is briefly described. A guide for Risk Assessment is also included but because of his familiarity with the installation, the end-user is in the best position to draft the final version.
