The search for potash in western Canada during the years of the great war led to the staking of claims on many of the "alkali lakes" and sloughs which occur in numerous localities in the morainic areas of the prairies, as well as in British Columbia, in the hope that potash salts would be found in commercial quantities. While the search for potash, up to the present time, has been disappointing, the prospecting of these areas has demonstrated that Canada possesses large reserves of sodium and magnesium compounds, principally in the form of sulphates, carbonates and chlorides. he writer first became interested in these deposits in 1911 while investigating the sodium chloride springs of northern Manitoba. In the fall of that year a number of the sulphate ? deposits in Saskatchewan and Alberta were visited, but owing to the excessive rains at that period, all the deposits were under water and only a few brine samples were obtained. Owing to pressure of other work investigations of the alkali deposits in western Canada, by the Mines Branch of the Department of Mines, could not be undertaken until the field season of 1921, but since that time the work has been continuous. During the summer of 1918 a reported discovery of a large deposit of potash bearing salts was featured in western papers and in a short time practically all the lakes and sloughs of the prairie provinces, which showed the least indication of being saline, were staked for potash. This reported discovery was not substantiated on investigation and many of those who had staked claims allowed them t~ lapse without the slightest effort to determine the character of the material in the deposits which they? had leased.

The analyses reported on in this paper indicate that there are hydrometallurgical routes from sulphide concentrates to copper that are potentially competitive with smelters which are not permitted to emit sulphur oxides. The various hydrometallurgical processes, and their economics, are discussed.

ABSTRACT Electricity production by the Electricity Supply Commission of South Africa (Eskom) is the most important beneficiation process for South African coal. As one of the world’s lowest cost producers, energy-intensive industries such as ferroalloys and aluminium were introduced. However the poor were neglected. The white paper on energy policy (Department of Minerals and Energy, 1998) sought to redress this. Also, chasing economic growth to generate jobs resulted in high electricity demand and interruptions. Lifespan estimates of South African coal reserves based upon peak theory vary widely. Approaching peak, coal production in the future will be more expensive and, thus, contribute to more expensive electricity, which could inhibit industrial development unless South Africans work smarter.

PROGRESSIVE industrial organizations have recognized the importance of maintaining an adequate reference library of volumes covering all phases of their particular branch of industry, but it has been the experience of the writer that few engineers know how to use to the best advantage this store of extremely -valuable information which has been accumulated for their service. Nor does the average engineer appreciate the fact that it is only through the current technical literature that he can keep abreast of the rapidly developing fields of engineering. The present-day ramifications of the engineering field are of such wide scope that the human mind is not capable of storing away more than a small fraction of the information available on any particular topie; yet, from time ? to time, such information would prove invaluable. An engineer can know intimately only a small part of his own branch of engineering; but he cannot afford to neglect to take the fullest possible advantage of all that is already known in his own particular field. Technical information may be obtained by one or more of the following methods: (1) by enquiring of the individual who knows; (2) by performing the experimental investigations necessary to ascertain the facts; (3) by consulting the technical literature, where a record may be found of the work of others. This last method is the one we wish to examine. Our main consideration is the question of how to use the library, but first it is necessary to give some attention to the kind of enquiries one takes to the library, and to the nature of the sources of information available.

THE world's largest known oil deposit lies in northern Alberta. In fact, according to government estimates, the famous so-called 'tar sands' of the Athabaska region contain several times as much oil as all the other proved reserves of the world. S. C. Ells, of the Department of Mines and Resources, who has been the Dominion Government's authority on the oil sands since 1913, has estimated the minimum content of the deposits at 100 billion barrels(!). C. P. Bowie, of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, has published an estimate of 250 billion barrels(2). ?In comparison, the latest authoritative estimate of the proved oil-field reserves of the world is less than 35 billion barrels(3). Out of this tremendous total, perhaps 500 million barrels are commercially available at present-day costs and prices; the remainder must be considered a latent reserve to be used when development costs are materially lower and petroleum prices materially higher than they now are. Mean-while, the 500-million-barrel portion presently available contains more oil than has been found in all the rest of Canada, and constitutes one of Canada's great mineral resources. Although these deposits have been known to white men since 1788, when Peter Pond, the explorer, found the Indians stewing the oil out of the sand and mixing it with spruce pitch to caulk their canoes, they are only now coming into commercial production. The purpose of the present paper is to describe the deposits, their oil content, their present development, and the possibilities that seem to lie immediately ahead. For the sake of completeness and clarity, the writer has not hesitated to use or to paraphrase material that he has previously published elsewhere in discussing various aspects of the oil sands.

"The study of the physical properties of asbestos minerals requires a careful isolation of the fiber from the wall rock and, at a later stage, a comparison of these physical properties with those of fibers that have passed through the milling and beneficiation processes.The effects of mineral impurities, loss of fiber length and the formation of extreme fines (asbestic and/or associated minerals) often show up in the formation of special asbestos products as well as in the commercial production of asbestos papers, mill-boards, asbestos cement products, plastics and insulation materials, and in the filtration of blood plasma and wines.Numerous test methods have been developed in Canada and in England for use in the asbestos industry. Special treatments of asbestos fibers have been used to improve their physical and chemical properties and to eliminate impurities.Numerous problems connected with the use of asbestos fibers are discussed, such as the effects of asbestos on filtration, surface area, surface treatments using organic or inorganic materials, the surface charge on the fiber, the presence of magnetite and air pollution elimination. Biological studies on finely ground asbestos, when dispersed in 0.9 per cent sodium chloride solution and then sterilized and injected into hamsters, show that by reducing the dose, the tissue damage can be largely avoided. In these experiments, Arizona asbestos fibers were carefully extracted from the wall rock, finely ground, and examined chemically and micros-copically for any mineral impurities that might be present so that any effect on the hamsters would be directly due to the presence of the asbestos. The harsh Arizona fiber induced more extensive tissue response than the soft fiber when tested in hamsters."

Great advances have been made in rubber-lined pumps for the pumping of mill pulps. The Canadian Allis Chalmers alone report ov.er 300 such pumps put into service during the past four years. Pumps in which both the casing and the impeller are rubber covered have proved most economical in handling the usual run of mill pulps, effecting large savings in power, maintenance, and shutdown costs. For the handling of pulps containing comparatively large, sharper edged /articles, rubber-lined casings with hard iron impellers have been developed by the pumping departments of Hollinger and Noranda. These rubber-iron combination pumps show an appreciable reduction in overall pumping costs as compared with the all-rubber and the all-iron pumps. The power efficiency is lower in rubber-iron than in all-rubber pumps but higher than in the all-iron pumps, with lower replacement costs due to the cheap iron impellers used. Where continuous operation is essential, however, and duplication of units to take care of shutdown time for replacement of parts is not within the expenditure budget of the company, all-rubber pumps are being used t0 a greater extent. As in all items pertaining to milling operations, the economics of the situation must be studied as closely as the technical details, to arrive at the most advisable practice.

The Otjikoto Mine, owned at 90% by B2Gold Corporation, is located 300 km north of Namibia’s capital city of Windhoek. The reserves from the open pit mine, estimated at 25.9 million tons with an average grade of 1.28 g/t Au, contain gangue minerals, pyrite and pyrrhotite, and have an estimated 10 year mine life. The feasibility study included an optimisation of gold leaching using CSTR for the original design. The results of the test work were used to establish the design criteria. Gravity tails from three composites (drill cores), representing the major ore types, were used. The XR3 sample (gravity tails) contained 0.32 g/t Au, while the XR2 and XR1 gravity tails samples (used for variability) contained, respectively, 0.30 g/t Au, and 0.47 g/t Au. The optimum leaching conditions were: a pre-treatment of 7 h at pH 10.5 with 100 g/t lead nitrate, DO > 5 ppm followed by cyanidation at 300 ppm NaCN, pH 10.0, DO > 5 ppm for 48 h. The gold extraction was 91.5% (97.2% overall extraction gravity/leach) and the cyanide addition was 0.57 kg/t NaCN. Increasing the DO to 16 ppm did not show any economic benefits. No pre-treatment or a 4-h pre-treatment reduced the gold leaching kinetics. The XR2 and XR1 gravity tails samples had gold extractions of 92.9% and 92.3%, respectively. At the plant scale, an 11 h pre-treatment is used followed by 42 h cyanidation with 250 ppm NaCN and an average DO of 8 ppm and 230 g/t lead nitrate in 2016. The cyanide addition was 0.49 kg/t NaCN. The commercial operation started on February 28th, 2015. The overall gold recovery and production were 98.4% and 145,696 ounces for 2015 and 98.1% and 166,286 ounces for 2016. It was found that retention times, gold content of leach residues and cyanide addition are comparable for the lab and the plant. Details of the Otjikoto process flowsheet are discussed in this paper along with the results of the lab leach optimisation test program and the plant leach circuit performance and improvements.

"From the perspective of metallurgical processing, gold ores can be classified into free-milling and refractory ores. Their extractive metallurgy are largely driven by mineralogical factors such as: gold particle size, association with other minerals, coatings and rimmings, presence of cyanicides, oxygen consumers and preg-robbers, presence of refractory gold minerals and locking of submicroscopic gold in sulfide mineral structure etc. Gold process mineralogy helps address issues and problems related to gold ore processing. It provides useful information on process selection, flowsheet development, recovery improvement and reagent consumption optimization. By combining classic mineralogical techniques, modern instrumental analysis and diagnostic metallurgy, the mineralogist is able to balance the various types of gold occurrence in an ore. This paper will provide a broad review of gold process mineralogy and the techniques available, and use case studies to describe how they can be used together, to provide the complete picture of gold process mineralogy in an ore. Examples will be used where applicable.INTRODUCTIONSince the early 1980’s, a great deal of work has been done in the characterization of gold ores, particularly refractory ores (Gasparrini, 1983; Wang, 1984; Hausen, 1985; Haines, 1986; Henley, 1989; Chryssoulis et al., 1990; Wang et al., 1992, 1994; Kojonen, 1999; Simon et al., 1999; Hong et al., 2000; Pals et al, 2003). Process mineralogy has come into its own as a respected inter-discipline in the fields of mineralogy and metallurgy – a subject that occupies an important place in both research and industry. As the free-milling gold ores are being depleted and more refractory ores are being discovered and processed, gold process mineralogy receives more and more attention from both the mineralogist and metallurgist as it helps to solve various problems encountered during gold ore processing. Steadily rising gold prices are also stimulating the need for gold process mineralogy due to the increasing demand for and production of the yellow metal. At SGS Lakefield Research, gold process mineralogy studies are conducted routinely on all types of gold ores and mill products to assist in a wide variety of metallurgical projects. Sustainability now forms a critical part of metallurgical plant design. In addition to compliance with requirements and corporate principles, design engineers must also consider how community and societal responses to the metallurgical industry affect the way they design and build plants. Three broad areas to consider are: the design engineer’s contribution to sustainability through the design process and the relationship to the social license to operate (SLO)—the unwritten license communities give companies to safely and responsibly operate the plant and equitably share benefits; the realization of sustainability goals through methodologies emerging in the design activities; and the integration of design frameworks into a contemporary project design context and its investment objectives. This chapter explores sustainability in metallurgical plant design in the context of SLO, design tools and frameworks, and community and societal influences.

In general, many past works examine mill load, mill power, shell lifter design etc with a view to improving the mill capacity. On the contrary, only a handful of papers have addressed the transport of fine slurry through the pulp lifters. We present the flow dynamics of pulp lifters via laboratory scale experiments, high speed photography and modeling with computational fluid dynamics. Next, the flow behaviour in ArcelorMittal?s Mont-Wright autogenous mill discharge flow is examined. In an effort to improve mill throughput, a comprehensive simulation and plant scale study of the mill was taken up with a focus on the shell and pulp lifter design. The shell lifter was found to be at its optimum limit for breakage of ore particles given the constraints of wear life and occupied volume. Next, the pulp lifter study was taken up with computational fluid flow code and discrete element code. The simulations directly showed that there was considerable carry-over of slurry. This effect was traced to the area restriction in the pulp lifter channels. Further, crash-stop studies confirmed slurry pooling within the mill. Thus it was readily apparent that mill throughput can be increased if the pulp-lifter could be redesigned. Consequently, the discharger section of the pulp-lifter was redesigned. First, this paper outlines the modeling in laboratory scale studies and plant scale studies leading up to the discharger design. Next, the discharge flow in seven different published mill surveys is predicted with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methodology shown here. Finally, Mont-Wright mill circuit performance before and after the discharger redesign is described. The usefulness of fluid flow simulations in the design of pulp-lifters is emphasized.

At South Deep Gold Mine longhole stopes are backfilled using a cemented Cyclone Classified Tailings in its hydraulic state. The need to contain the hydraulic fill until cured requires a barricade. Due to the massive size of the stopes, the tailings can exert enormous forces on any such barricade. Barricades have long been in use, but recent failures in Australia and the large rate of filling required at South Deep solicited a robust design. A robust design must examine all foreseeable failures and the barricade must be able to resist all expected and, within limits, unexpected loads. The design should also be simple to construct and cost effective, limiting the impact of construction errors and unnecessary delays to production.

"More than 70% of potash is produced worldwide by froth flotation. Flotation of potash was developed in the early 1930s. Amines are widely used for flotation of sylvite (KCl) from halite (NaCl) and insoluble materials such as clays. Amine collector is also absorbed by clays. Therefore, clays are usually separated by scrubbing and de-sliming prior to flotation. Alternatively, slimes can be floated ahead of potash flotation. Flotation recoveries of sylvite are commonly in the range of 85%, while losses can occur in slimes, flotation tailings and make-up of process brine. Ores containing free coarse-grained sylvite are generally screened, whereas both fine and coarse fractions are conditioned and floated separately. The unique features of potash flotation include solubility of sylvite in water, the size of particles floated and fast kinetics. Particles up to 2.3 mm can be floated and about 50% of flotation feed can be removed in the rougher stage in few minutes. The main challenges in potash flotation are the recovery of potash from slimes, flotation efficiency in the presence of carnallite and recovery of coarse potash grains. A review of potash flotation shows that there is still room for improvement in both coarse and fine potash flotation. The present paper reviews the most significant flotation parameters including reagent type and dosage, flotation circuits, flotation equipment size and new developments in potash flotation. The latter include new reagents, flotation technologies (Hydrofloat, Jameson and column cells) larger flotation cells and slimes flotation.INTRODUCTION Potash is the common industrial term for potassium in various chemical combinations and minerals soluble in water. About 90% of potash produced worldwide is used as agricultural fertilizers. Flotation is the main treatment process of sylvinite (KCl-NaCl) ores for recovery of sylvite (KCl). Potash concentrate should contain a minimum of 95% KCl and be relatively free from 0.2 mm KCl fines. The flotation process for beneficiation of potash ores was developed in United States and Russia concurrently in the early 1930s. In 1934, Potash Corporation of America applied flotation process in a commercial scale (Tippin R.B. and Huiatt J.L). In the initial application, halite (NaCl) was selectively floated by employing lead chloride as an activator and soap as collector. The sylvite concentrate was reported in the cell underflow."

The La Ronge. Kisseynew, Glennie Lake and Flin Flon domains. the main focu for gold exploration in the southeast part of the Saskatchewan Shield, were subject to continental glacial ice advances from the northeast during the Quaternary. Based on forty-four auger hole along with surficial mapping, the general Quaternary stratigraphy in this area is observed to be composed of a lower till unit , an overlying stratified unit of glaciofluvial sand and gravel and/or a glaciolacustrine silt-clay unit. an upper till. and an upper tratified unit. The lower till is commonly found throughout the geological domains except where it has been eroded in glaciofluvial or fluvial channels. Glacial Lake Agassiz fo rmerly covered most of these prospective domains. The lacustrine deposits associated with the lake impede surficial geochemical surveys including soil. lake sediment. and biogeochemical surveys. The approximate extent of clay cover can be predicted from beach elevations. For instance. in the Waddy Lake area. clay i not known to occur above about 1,400 feet (425 m) elevation. Exploration techniques are hampered by clay in at least one third of the volcanic belt. Thi s influence is indicated by the fact that nearly all gold prospect found to date are located above 1,400 feet (425 m) while the area of clay cover is vi rtually unexplored. The upper till i related to a minor ice readvance. This till is the medium often sampled during soil surveys in the area . lts value as a geochemical ampling medium is dependent on the extent of erosional contact with bedrock highs on the lower till. Those areas which are relatively free of lacustrine and fluvial deposits are those where surface geochemical methods work best. In the Waddy Lake volcanic belt approximately 25-50% of the area may be suitable for surficial surveys. The area of the Star Lake prospect occurs above the 1,500 foot (460 m) elevation and was not covered by Lake Agas iz. The effectivene of till sampling as a surface sampling medium was tested in those areas above the clay level. Till orientat ion surveys were carried out at the Star Lake property and the Tower Lake prospect (Waddy Lake area) within the La Ronge Domain . Gold grain counts and analy es of heavy mineral concent rate from 7 kg surface ti ll samples were used to delineate dispersion trains down-ice from mineralization. In addition, the clay fraction and a 30 g (-80 mesh) subsample from the same till sample, were analyzed for gold . This paper is intended to call attention to the manifold uses of limestone in industry; to indicate the types of limestone desired by some of the large consuming industries; and to give some information on the resources of limestone in Canada, so that an idea may be obtained of the present and future possibilities for limestone production. The word limestone is used in the usual broad sense to include both high-calcium limestone and the highly magnesian variety known as dolomite, as well as all intermediate types. Lime is simply calcined limestone, and in this general paper its uses have been included with those of raw limestone. It is of interest, in dealing with this subject, to glance back over the early history of the utilization of limestone, for by so doing we see that limestone has been of importance to mankind since the beginning of civilization and has contributed in no small measure to the development of a number of the arts and sciences. One of the first uses, if not the first use, of limestone was in connection with the making of lime for plastering purposes. This use antedates civilization. In the day of the ancient Greeks and Romans, the art of plastering had been brought to a state of perfection that is not nearly approached by the modern artisan.

"After a short introduction to the history of the semi-conductor theory, the paper describes the principles of electron and hole flow in the semiconducting materials, the operation of the PN junction, and the rectification process in multi-layer devices (diodes and SCR's). The various methods of purification and zone-refining of the silicon are illustrated prior to the discussion on the most commonly used junction-forming processes (alloying, diffusing, etc.). Modern device fabrication and packaging operations are illustrated. Factory testing, evaluation, electrical parameters and guaranteed rating characteristics are listed. It is explained in this paper how the various device parameters affect the electrical performance of the finished unit and how the finished unit characteristics (turn-on, turn-off time, etc.) will influence the equipment rating. In concluding, some typical items of equipment are highlighted, and the applications of these semiconductor rectifiers in the chemical, mining, pulp and paper, and steel industries, etc., are dealt with."

"The Larder Lake-Cadillac Tectonic Zone in Rouyn-Beauchastel area (a 20 km long segment) contains distinct lithotectonic units bounded by artastomosing or sub-parallel shear zones. The gold deposits in the area are located within highly strained portions of E-W striking shear zones. The ore-zones are structurally controlled disseminated and vein-type lodes. They are spatially related either to megascopic z-shaped folds which refold E-W shears, or to areas of intersection between E-W shear zones and late NE-striking faults. Several ore bodies are enclosed within ultramafic rock units or at their contacts with adjacent units. All the lenses are elongated down dip and distributed, both loterally and vertically, ""en echelon"" . The ore zones tend to decrease in size and number away from the hinge zone of the megascopic z-shaped folds.Two main styles of mineralization are recognized at the Astoria deposit and at for most of the deposits in the Rouyn-Beauchastel segments a discontinuous ""Carbonate Ore"" and a more continuous, albitic sulphide-bearing ""Flow Ore"" (terminology used at the Kerr Addison mine).The typical ""Carbonate Ore"" zones are found within strongly arbonatized blocks bounded by conjugate late NE or NNW-striking fralls. The carbonatized blocks display features characteristic of llrittle to brittle-ductile deformation developed in shear zone system. Vein systems in the ""Carbonate Ore"" occur within shear fractures(D R)tension fractures (T), or within brecciated rocks adjacent to NS llrilcing faults. The ""Carbonate Ore"" zones are displaced by numer IU lole E-W, NNE, NW and N-S faults.The ""Flow Ore"" zones are found within predominantly ductile portions of E-W shear zones. The sulphide mineralization is finely disseminated and regularly distributed within mylonitic foliation or associated with veins and veinlets sub-parallel or oblique to the mylonitic foliation, in which case the mineralization is coarser grained. The gold mineralization is a late Archean event postdating the formation of the penetrative fabric, and synchronous with the end of the dextral oblique-slip motion."

The corrosion properties of the skin and the bulk of semi-solid processed and high pressure die cast AZ91 alloy were studied in 5% NaCI solution by (a) analysing the corrosion morphology, (b) measuring electrochemical polarization curves, (c) performing electrochemical impedance spectroscopic measurements, and (d) immersion tests at constant pH-values. Using XRD, LM, SEM and EDX to evaluate the microstructure of skin and bulk specimens, the corrosion results were related to the microstructures of the particular alloys. However, microstructure and corrosion performance were found to be similar for both production processes, and only slight but distinct differences were found. Generally, the skin corrosion properties are inferior to those of the bulk, with the exception of the high pressure die cast AZ91 alloy, where the finer microstructure of the skin layer exhibits a better performance as showed by impedance studies and confirmed in long term immersion tests.

The development of contact angles on highly polished ?uraninite surfaces, using sodium oleate and dodecyl ammonium acetate as collectors, has been studied at different collector and hydrogen ion concentrations. It was found that sodium oleate in acidic media (up to a neutral: PH) and dodecyl ammonium acetate in neutral and alkaline media give good contact angles. It appears that the combined forms of these collectors, viz., oleic acid and free amine, are more important in effecting contact. W ITH the emergence of uranium as a strategic metal in the last fifteen years, considerable effort has been directed toward the commercial recovery of uranium from its ores. This has resulted in the development of a uranium technology. It is only in recent years, However, that fundamental data regarding the floatability and surface properties of uraninite and ?pitchblende have been elucidated by different methods. Some industrially relevant applications for pyrite nano/micro-particles have been proposed in the literature, such as the catalysis of chalcopyrite leaching, the removal of As(III), As(V) and Cr(VI) from solution, as photovoltaic devices, and others. Even though pyrite can be recovered from solution by flotation, for some applications it may be beneficial to provide pyrite with magnetic properties. In this work, a methodology to synthesize magnetic shell/core composites made of pyrite as the shell and either natural or synthetic magnetite as the core is presented. The size of the magnetic composite may range from tenths to hundreds of microns. The synthesis is basically made by stoichiometrically mixing iron nano/micro-particles with sulfur microparticles with magnetite particles, and bringing the mixture in an oxygen free atmosphere from 200 to 300 °C for 4 h. The composites were characterized by optical microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy and X-Ray diffraction.
