"INTRODUCTION In the usual volumetric determination of uranium, the solution containing uranium is reduced in a Jones reductor, yielding a mixture of trivalent and tetravalent uranium; the trivalent uranium is oxidized to the tetravalent state by bubbling a stream of air through the solution. The resulting solution of tetravalent uranium is titrated with a standard oxidant, generally sulfatoceric acid, dichromate, or permanganate. It seemed likely that the same general procedure could be used in determining semimicro quantities pf uranium if the conditions affecting the variables involved were understood more clearly than at present. In the method described below, the use of ferric sulfate to oxidize tetravalent uranium allows the titration to be made at room temperature in an essentially colorless solution with sulfatoceric acid. The latter oxidant in turn permits the use of the very stable indicator, ferroin; with its sharp color change and exactly reproducible blanks.Solutions of uranyl sulfate were prepared by diluting a stock solution that had been standardized gravimetrically according to the method of Lundell and Knowles (8).3/ Solutions of sulfatoceric acid were prepared according to the directions of G. F. Smith (12) and were standardized against arsenic trioxide in the presence of osmic acid according to the directions of Glen (5). The cerium solutions were stored in 18-liter carboys fitted with siphon arrangements so that the bottles did not need to be opened and protected from light in a dark cupboard. Under these conditions, even the 0.01 N solution changed by less than 1 part per thousand over a period of about 6 months."

ARCHEOLOGISTS, by use of the terms Bronze Age and Iron Age, indicate that metals have in the past determined the character of civilization. The relatively simple discovery by a primitive metallurgist that the addition of tin to copper both facilitated the production of castings and increased the durability of the product enabled hunter, warrior, and housewife alike to do things never dreamed of before. Similarly, the smelting of iron and the discovery of hardening methods greatly changed the arts of peace and war. Discoveries of low-melting-point alloys for joining and for making household utensils, and perhaps the adornment of a feminine form by sparkling precious-metal jewelry, have at times changed the destiny of a country. Bronze cannon, the cast and wrought iron Watt engine, copper transmission lines, and aluminum alloy aircraft, are cases of particular metals making possible the realization of an improved engineering design. Perhaps of the greatest influence of all upon civilization was the development of type metal. The rapid increase in the rate of dissemination of knowledge dates from the day that the technique of the pewterer was utilized in making rapidly reproducible and accurately sized letters for printing. It was not movable type, but metal type that was important, for metal castings could be made of identically the same shape and size at an enormous rate, and possessed excellent inking and wearing characteristics.

The prevention of coal-mine explosions has been one of the chief purposes of the Bureau of Mines. In facti the first Federal appropriation relating to mining methods, in 1908, authorized the investigation of the causes of mine explosions and the possible methods of preventing them. When that investigation started the mining industry had not determined the real causes of a succession of terrible coal-mine explosions in various countries, culminating in the great disasters at CoulTièl'es, France, and Monongah, W. Va. Coal dust as an agent of widespread explosions had been under suspicion, and watering to allay the dust was recommended by some mining engineers but the watering of coal-mine dust was adopted in comparatively few mines of the United States and Great Britain, and had not been introduced widely in any country except Germany. Rock dusting, another method of preventing explosions of coal dust, was early tested with success by the Bureau of Mines in its fist gallery at Pittsburgh and, beginnig in 1911, at the experimental mine, Bruceton, Pa. Several of the fist publications i of the bureau suggested that rock dust be used in gaseous or dusty bituminous mines, and in 1915 Technical Paper 842 strongly recommended it. Since that time additional tests in the experimental mine have fully confied this :ft judgment.

ONE LAW cannot he evaded, the economic law of supply and demand. Silver, like any other commodity, is subject to this law; and its price in the long run is determined by existing conditions. I say "in the lone run because at times silver has appeared to mope contra to basic coalitions. Such movements, however, are, occasioned by the market's attempt to anticipate changes in these governing conditions. If the expected changes materialize then the new market level is justified, but if they do not then the market will revert to its previous status, A striking example of such a move occurred in November when the price advanced over 70, in ten days and then in the next two weeks lost more than it had gained. The reasons for this advance were that the speculative element interpreted certain events as favorable to silver namely, England suspension of the gold standard, higher shat prices, and the Chinese-Japanese crisis. When these expectations proved unjustified the inevitably, elapse followed became the governing conditions had not channel.

There is strong evidence that many major oil and gas (O&G) projects are plagued by large cost and schedule overruns, or significant underperformance in productivity. Similar evidence exists for large mining projects. This paper claims that uncertainty is the underlying reason why projects fail to deliver the metrics used to justify their investment, or to deliver the economic value possible if alternative decisions had been made.Most technical and economic analyses are performed to reduce uncertainty to help make decisions. Decision-making is about ranking alternatives and choosing the best; rarely are precise predictions required, if this is even possible. Better uncertainty assessment is one of the keys to better decisions, thus better business outcomes. To get better decisions it is suggested that the focus or reward/penalty incentives be shifted away from the quality of outcomes to the quality of decisions. High-quality decisions are those that are generated from the skilled use of the tools, methodologies and processes from the discipline of decision analysis.Uncertainty is quantified by probability, which is a degree of belief in the truth/falsity of some proposition about a quantity relevant to a decision, such as volume of in-place resource, future price or action of a competitor. The probability a person ascribes to a proposition depends upon their information set; hence probability is subjective – it is not an inherent attribute of the quantity of interest or the physical system.The above simple observations have profound implications for modelling approaches, how they deal with uncertainty, the use of data to help assess uncertainty and the reliability of information provided by subject-matter experts. The limited circumstances under which frequency data (from spatial or temporal variables) can be used to assign probabilities is also reviewed.People, in general, are subject to a range of biases and cognitive errors. Research with O&G subject-matter experts shows that their expertise offers little or no protection from making errors in probability assessments and other judgements.CITATION:Begg, S H, 2016. From March 1944 to July 1945 the Division of Geophysical Exploration of the Federal Bureau of Mines made magnetometer surveys of some of the principal iron ore deposits of the Iron Springs district, Iron County, Utah. The district comprises a belt about 23 miles long and 3 miles wide. Most of the large ore bodies are found as pods of replacement ore within a favorable limestone bed lying at the margins of three separate igneous intrusions in the district The magnetic surveys were confined chiefly to this geologically favorable zone at the margins. The iron ore is a mixture of magnetite and hematite. The magnetite content of the ore ranges from 14 to 58 percent. Magnetic anomalies of 1,250 gammas or more were usually found over the near-surface ore bodies. About 62,000 magnetometer stations were taken over a total traverse distance of about 300 miles. Outcropping ore bodies were surveyed to determine, insofar as was possible from the magnetic data, their probable length, width, depth, extent, strike, dip, and tonnage. Geologically favorable areas where no ore is exposed were explored in an endeavor to find new ore bodies. Favorable locations were determined for exploratory diamond drilling, both in areas of exposed ore bodies and in areas of newly discovered magnetic anomalies. Forty-five separate magnetic anomalies that indicate the possible existence of ore bodies were observed. Of these, 13 anomalies are caused by outcropping ore bodies of proved commercial size. Five are caused by non-outcropping ore bodies of proved commercial size which were discovered, in whole or in part, as a result of the geophysical surveys. Of the remaining anomalies, which lie in virtually un-tested areas where few or no ore bodies are exposed, six probably are caused by large, unexposed replacement ore bodies, nine are possibly caused by large, unexposed replacement ore bodies, and six are probably caused by unexposed magnetite veins of some small commercial importance,

INTERNATIONAL conferences on safety in mines originated in 1912 when, in response to an invitation issued by the United States, representatives of Austria-Hungary, Belgium, France, and Germany participated in a conference held in Pittsburgh, Pa The record shows that a permanent organization was proposed to be developed through. diplomatic channels. However, the advent of war 2 years later prevented this proposal from coming to fruition. No further cooperation between the Bureau of Mines and a group having: similar interests in a foreign country took place until 1924, when formal cooperation with the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain was established. Interchange of personnel and results of research under that arrangement have resulted in a number of publications in both countries and more rapid advance in knowledge than could have been obtained through the same efforts exerted independently.

"Silicosis was first reported by the ancient Greeks and is apparently as old as human history. The prevalence of this illness peaked in the last half of the 19th century and the early part of this century, when mechanized industry was developing and the relationship between dust exposure and disease was less well understood. Yet, even today in devel-oped countries, sporadic outbreaks of silicosis occur when workers are consistently exposed to silica particles of respir-able size (0.5 to 5.0 µm in diameter) at levels exceeding those recognized to be safe.Silicon dioxide or silica. is the earth's most abundant mineral. Silica is considered to be either free (i.e.. unbound to other minerals) or combined. Minerals with high amounts of free silica include quartz (including granite) flint. Chert, opal, chalcedony, and diatomite. Combined forms of silica are called silicates and include, among others, asbestos talc and kaolin.In the crystalline form, silica exists as quartz, cristobalite, and tridymite (Fig. 28). Of these quartz is ubiquitous in the environment and occurs as sand and as a part of many rocks. Cristobalite and tridymite occur naturally in lava and can be formed by the heating of quartz or amorphous silica. Cristo-balite is more tibrogenic than quartz. Amorphous silica is noncrystalline and, therefore, is relatively nontoxic and does not cause silicosis. It occurs as diatomite (skeletons of pre-historic marine organisms) or as vitreous silica (glass), the result of carefully melting and then quickly cooling free crystalline silica. Heating diatomite with or without alkali (a process known as calcining), forms cristobalite and adds the respiratory toxicity of free crystalline silica.There are many opportunities for occupational exposure to respirable crystalline free silica. Some of the commonly en-countered occupations in which the risk of silicosis exists are reported in Table 20.Silicosis. the pulmonary disease caused by the inhalation of silica particles of respirable size, is most commonly cate-gorized by findings on the chest radiograph. The most typical presentations simple silicosis and progressive massive fibrosis appear different radiologically but are grouped under the category of classic silicosis because they are a part of the radiographic spectrum of this illness. Radiographically, simple silicosis appears as small (less than 10 mm in diameter), rounded opacities, typically predominant in the upper lung zones. Progressive massive fibrosis is the result of the coalescence of these small nodular opacities and appears as larger opacities (more than 10 mm in diameter), again typicallydistributed in the upper lung zones."

This paper is a revision of Information Circular 7380, by D. Harrington and J. H. East, Jr., published in 1946, entitled ?Safe Storage, Handling, and Use of Commercial Explosives in Metal Mines, Nonmetallic Mines, and Quarries.? Issued soon after the close of World War II, this earlier circular described the unprecedented increase in the production and use of commercial explosives during the war as a result of expanded industry and the tremendous demand f or metals and minerals. In the years following World War II, the production and use of commercial explosives in the United States have continued to rise. Hence, the Bureau of Mines presents these revised figures through 1952. In rewriting this Wormation circular, most of the text prepared by Harrington and East has been retained, with newer statistical information compiled by Seth T. Reese, Accident Analysis Branch, and V. E. Wrenn, of the same branch.

According to reports received by the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, as of January 1, 1929 there were 413 completed refineries in the United States, with a total daily crude-oil capacity of 3,509,540 barrels. In addition, 14 refineries, with a potential capacity of 99,000 barrels, were being constructed. Of the completed refineries, 341, with a capacity of 3,325,890 barrels, or 95 per cent of the total capacity, were in operation; and 72, with a capacity of 183,650 barrels, or 5 per cent of the total, were shut down. The improved condition of the refining industry in 1928 was indicated in several ways; namely, in an increase in the total capacity of the completed plants, in the opening up of a few plants which were shut down during 1927, in a decrease in the number of plants dismantled, and in an increase in the number of plants under construction. The majority of the refiners have followed a steady expansion program commensurate in most cases with the increase in demand for petroleum products. Obsolete equipment has been dismantled and modern equipment has been installed, with the net result that the total capacity of the completed refineries in the United States has shown a steady increase since January 1, 1918, the date of the first Bureau of Mines survey. Between January 1, 1928, and January 1, 1929, the number of completed plants fell from 423 to 413, but their total capacity increase 259,160 barrels, or 8 per cent. This compares with an increase in runs to stills of domestic and foreign crude petroleum of 10 per cent, and of domestic crude alone of 7 per cent.

1. Domestic Production and Use: Twelve companies operated 31 primary aluminum reduction plants, three firms accounting for 66% of production. Washington, Oregon, and Montana accounted for 32% of the total production; Gulf Coast States, 25%; Northern States, 29%; and other Southern States, 14%. Output of primary metal in 1973 was valued at $2.2 billion. About 80% of the secondary recovery was from new aluminum base scrap and 20% was from old scrap. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the East Central United States. Of aluminum consuming industries in 1972, building accounted for 28%; transportation 19%; electrical, 13%; packaging, 16%; and consumer durab1es, 10%.

Patents issued to Bureau personnel are also listed, and instructions are given on how to apply for permission to use them. One of the outstanding features of this Special Publication is an exhausive subject and author index. IntroductionThe Bureau of Mines was established in the public interest to conduct inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining and the preparation, treatment and utilization of mineral substances; to promote health and safety in the mineral industries; to conserve material resources and present their waste; to further economic development; to increase efficiency in the mining, metallurgical, quarrying, and other mineral industries; and to inquire into the economic conditions affecting those industries, The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and approved February 25, 1913, made it the province and duty of the Bureau to ""disseminate information concerning these subjects in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.""In accordance with this directive, the Bureau reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in proceedings of conventions and seminar's; in reference books; and in other non-Bureau publications. The number of these reports, the wide range of subjects they cover, and the variety of mediums in which they appear make the kind of list and index presented in this special publication both necessary and valuable. This issue describes reports and articles published during the period January 1, 1970, to December 31, 1974. The presence in the Cripple Creek district, Colo., of irrespirable gas or gases, generally known to consist mainly of nitrogen and carbon dioxide, has been recognized by members of the mining industry in that region almost since underground mining was begun there; the occurrence, origin, and possible control of these gases have been discussed in several articles cited at various places in this report. Similar gases have also been studied in other metal-mining districts, as later discussed. In March, 1925, there were two fatalities from rock-strata gases in the shaft of the Index mine, near Cripple Creek. Two men repairing the bell or signal line preparatory to reopening the shaft were lowered into irrespirable gases and died. Their bodies were recovered by rescue crews from the United States Bureau of Mines and .the Portland mine, Victor, Colo. These crews found it necessary to use oxygen breathing apparatus. In October of the same year a miner was trapped on the 6 level of the Midget mine by an influx of gases that filled the shaft to a point above that where he was working. Oxygen breathing apparatus was again used by Bureau of Mines employees, who were in the vicinity, and the man was brought out in time to save his life. These two fatalities and one near fatality seemed to show that additional investigation of the gases and methods of control might be warranted. Accordingly, field and laboratory studies were begun by the authors of this report after a visit to the district by M. van Siclen, then engineer in charge, mining research division, Bureau of Mines, and after conferences with the Mine Owners' Association of Cripple Creek and with J. T. Joyce, metal-mine commissioner of the State of Colorado. The mine operators of the Cripple Creek district and the State mine commissioner's office gave whole-hearted cooperation in this work.

Neste contexto este trabalho desenvolveu uma metodologia para avaliar de forma individual a resistência mecânica a compressão do coque nas granulometrias típicas do coque metalúrgico e como os principais defeitos, poros e trincas governam a resistência do material. Foram realizados testes de compressão, análise de microestrutura, microtextura, inspeção visual de trincas, MEV. Os resultados das análises realizadas no coque mostraram que a tensão média de ruptura aumenta com o aumento da granulometria.

A joint federal-provincial approach in gathering basic information from industry on mine production, concentrator operations and ore reserves, initiated during 1978, is a major step toward the goal of achieving better government-industry communication through a common data base. Information from questionnaires sent out by provincial governments is shared with the federal government; correct interpretation is ensured by mine visits conducted jointly by provincial and federal representatives. Initial focus is on nonferrous metal mines. The federal Department of Energy, Mines and Resources (EMR) is responsible for a national analysis that is aimed at the early detection of worrisome developments-and their reasons-in the flow from resources to reserves and from reserves to supply of these metals. The heart of the national analysis is the annual construction of a "monitoring curve", showing each metal's aggregated mine production as it would decrease over time if no new reserves and production capacity were to be added from the year of analysis. For a given metal, a comparison of monitoring curves from year to year can reveal early signs of supply stagnation. In anyone year, a monitoring curve in conjunction with foreseen needs for Canadian mine output will show the production gap that would have to be filled from reserves and production capacity yet to be developed. The production gaps for copper, nickel, zinc and lead, the four leading base metals mined in Canada, are shown for the 20-year period ahead, in the context of production achieved during the past 20 years. It is shown that reserve levels commensurate with likely future production levels would require that average annual reserve additions during 1978-98 exceed the average annual additions during the preceding 20 years. Reserve levels of all four metals have declined in recent years. A review of significant discoveries in the last five years suggests that this fall in reserves is not the result of a lack of exploration successes, but of stagnation in development for various economic reasons.

T HE 133rd meeting of the A. I. M. E., opening in New York on Feb. 15, promises to be as successful technically and socially as any in the past. The papers submitted for the various technical sessions are unusually excellent and insure something of interest to every group. Tentative programs have already been issued, and a concise resume of the various sessions, arranged chronologically, appears on page 48. Among the many interesting technical sessions arranged, attention is directed to those of the Petroleum Division, embracing the Symposium on Production that has come to be an annual feature, and new ones on refining practice, transportation and economics. The Institute of Metals program is similarly comprehensive. It includes 15 papers, 8 on copper, 4 on aluminum and its alloys, and one each on magnesium, lead, and fatigue of metals. The Coal Committee offers as a leading contribution its report, prepared under the direction of H. N. Eavenson, giving a new analysis of the capacity of the mines and a comparison of coal with other industries. This will be supplemented by a number of other papers of especial interest to operating men, among which are "Data on Use of Loading Machines in Bituminous Mines," by Graham Bright; "Evaluation of Coal," by R. H. Sweetser; "Selection of Coals for the Manufacture of Coke," by H. J. Rose; and "Relation of Origin and State of Carbonization of Coal to Problems of Low Temperature Carbonization," by S. W. Parr. The Iron and Steel Committee has scheduled seven papers, and there will be a special session on open-hearth practice, in which will be presented the first results of the two conferences, held by the sub- committee at Pittsburgh and Cleveland. A symposium on molding sands will be a special feature of the session on non-metallics.

"A number of silver producers have identified a need for a system to recover silver and gold from base metal flotation concentrates on site rather than sending the concentrate to third party smelters to improve mine economics. Historically intensive cyanidation has only been used for coarse gold gravity concentrates in batch machines but Gekko have applied the InLine Leach Reactor (ILR) to these difficult to leach concentrates.The ILR’s unique ability to operate at various solid to solution ratios, high mass capacity, the ability to handle fines, the use of peroxide to aid silver leach kinetics and simple operation has resulted in significant economic benefits to Hochschild PLC’s Selene and Arcata operations. This paper describes the commissioning phase of the ILR5000BA intensive cyanidation reactors on concentrates from the Selene mine at the Ares Concentrator.INTRODUCTIONIntensive leaching of high grade concentrates in gold ore treatment is now commonplace and is considered an essential feature of most gold circuits (Lane, Fountain and LeBrooy, 2008). The devices commonly used for intensive leaching (InLine Leach Reactor, Acacia Reactor, etc) are specifically designed for the typical coarse nature of the concentrate.In some of these intensive leach applications, significant amounts of silver are co-recovered with the gold. In fact, the intensive leaching conditions of 1 to 2% NaCN in solution and high dissolved oxygen levels, overcome the issue with silver’s slow dissolution rate in traditional CIL/CIP circuits and avoids the formation of insoluble silver sulphide minerals on the surface of the gold (Marsden, 2006).There are a significant number of mine operators producing silver in the form of mixed base metal sulphides flotation concentrates. Typically the mine operators are paid for the silver after processing of the concentrate by the base metal smelter whom recovers the silver during the refining process."

A cooperative project between the Bureau of Mines, Department of the Interior, and the Montana School of Mines, investigating results of hydraulic systems for transporting sand slurries for emplacement, was begun in August 1955. In such circumstances, the Bureau provides funds for a fellowship leading to a Master of Science degree as well as available instruments, tools, supplies and equipment. The School provides the ore-beneficiating laboratory with its equipment for use as a pilot plant. The success of a hydraulic backfilling method employing mill tailings depends largely upon the physical characteristics of the tailings. One of these characteristics is size distribution, especially in the finer size ranges. When being emplaced underground, almost impervious layers of slimes separate from some types of mill tailings containing a high percentage of slimes and settle on the top of the sand fill. These coatings may be so dense that the water in the slurry cannot percolate through them for proper drainage. Successive layers of fill in a stope, each with an impervious coating on top, sometimes build up a hydrostatic head, creating pressure on the bulkheads. This may cause breaks in the lining material, inducing sand runs and flooding the level and sumps below. Deleterious slimes flocculated and disseminated throughout the sands should help prevent the formation of impervious slime layers, increasing percolation and settling rates.
