"The Crandall Canyon Mine (CCM) is located in the Wasatch coal field in central Utah. Extensive longwall mining at CCM preceded a decision to recover coal left in barrier pillars on each side of a set of main entries extending far into the mine. During mining in March 2007, a major bump occurred that led to cessation of mining in the barrier pillar on the north side of the mains and to the start of mining in the south barrier pillar. Subsequent loss of ground control in August 2007, through coal pillar bursts had tragic consequences with loss of six miners and shortly afterward three rescue team members. A U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)report describes the events in detail (MSHA, 2008).An important lesson to be learned from CCM is the need to select a computer program suitable for pillar design. Computer programs are engineering tools and selecting the right tool for the job is essential. In this regard, minimum program requirements include capability for computing stress distribution within a pillar and adjacent roof and floor strata. The reason is simple: strength of rock is stress dependent; both vary from point to point in pillars and adjacent strata. Preferably, one should follow the evolution of stress as the mining plan is executed from start to finish to assure safety or to warn of a potentially hazardous situation developing as mining progresses.The approach to the problem posed by barrier pillar mining at CCM is conventional in the sense of applying well known finite element modeling techniques to analysis of a proposed mining plan. The engineering purpose is to evaluate the mining plan with respect to ground control questions including roof, floor and pillar safety. Results of previous two-dimensional finite element analysis indicated pillar safety was by no means assured (MSHA, 2008; Pariseau, 2008; Pariseau, 2011). Geometry of barrier pillar mining is limited in two dimensions for example, crosscuts are not seen in vertical cross sections. While three-dimensional analyses are preferred, even moderately sized regions often lead to very large problem sizes that exceed computer capabilities. However, a recent development in finite element modeling of tabular deposits allows for whole mine analysis in three dimensions. This technique involves a dual node - dual mesh concept. Both have been used separately in much earlier work, but are only now used in combination. It is possible to have an estimation of subsidence at a kilometer scale and details of stress, strain and displacement about barrier pillars, main entries and pillars, and so on at a meter scale (Pariseau, 2014). No compromise involving empirical formulas or similar guess work is required. Indeed, all calculations are based on first principles: physical laws, kinematics, and material laws. Effects of joints and in situ variability or uncertainty in strata properties, elastic moduli and strengths, may be included for greater realism. An important objective of the present study is to assess the role of three-dimensional pillar geometry in arriving at conclusions regarding barrier pillar mining versus two-dimensional results."

From the standpoint of tonnage and dollar value copper is the most important nonferrous metal mined in North America. The opening of copper mines has had an important bearing on the development and settlement of many sections of the continent. The prosperity of many of the mining States or provinces depends directly upon the copper-mining industry. Normally, about 35,000 men are employed in the copper mines, mills, and smelters of the United States. The United States is the most important producer of copper among the nations; more copper is mined in North America than in any other continent, and for many years the United States alone produced about half of the copper of the world. During the last 10 years increasing production in South America and Africa has reduced the relative importance of North America and the United States.

There are no known published methods of estimating the degradation of coal measure rocks by water that are simple and efficient, yet still provide a quantitative, meaningful value for assessing the stability of coal mine floor, roof, and rib. The slake durability test, the standard index method for estimating the durability of rock subject to wetting, can provide misleading results for floor stability assessment. Additionally, slake durability testing is time consuming and requires specialty equipment. Methods based on humidity cycling have been demonstrated to be very effective for assessing coal mine roof, but require specialty equipment and do not address floor stability concerns. Visual observation techniques, such as that developed for the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) method, adequately qualify rock degradation, but lack quantitative rigor. This paper will describe an alternative method, coined the water sensitivity test, originally developed for floor stability analyses, but also found applicable for roof and rib stability assessment. The test was developed by CONSOL in the early 1990's, and in its current form, has been in use for approximately twelve years. The method is based on the basic slake durability principle of measuring the mass of the rock retained on a screen after submersion in water. The new test employs two screens of different sizes, and also uses modified submersion, drying, and data processing procedures. The method is relatively efficient and can be geared toward batched testing. As with the slake durability test, the resulting index value provides a quantitative measure of the susceptibility of rock to water degradation. In addition to discussing the test method and its development, this paper provides a comparison of results with those fiom standard slake durability tests, and tabulated results for various types of coal measure rocks. Examples of the technique's utility are provided, including assessment of longwall and development floor conditions, roof and rib rock weathering and stability, and drum-bit cutability.

THE following paper has been prepared with the object of placing on record in the Transactions some facts concerning the present condition and future prospects of the coal industry of Illinois. In presenting it, the writer wishes to say that a considerable amount of the material contained is taken from the publications and records of the Illinois Coal Mining Investigations, the annual Coal Report of the State Mining Board, and the work of the State Geological Survey. Coal Beds and Mining Methods According to the latest maps of the State Geological Survey, there are only 19 of the 102 counties of the State some portion of whose territory is not within the borders of the coal measures. If outlying areas in Calhoun and Whiteside Counties are considered, the number is reduced to 17. This does not mean that all of the 85 counties that are partly or wholly underlain by coal measures will become producers, as there are some portions of the State in which the coal does not occur in beds of such thickness as to warrant the hope that it can be mined. The mining of coal is widespread, however, for in 1916 there was production from 51 of the 102 counties of the State. There seem to be no cases in which operations will be limited by depth, as none of the coal measures lie at depths much greater than those at which it has been proved that coal may be profitably mined in this field. In fact, the deepest shaft reaching a bed of bituminous coal in the United States is located in this State at Assumption, where coal only 3 ½ ft. (1.07 m.) thick is worked at a depth of 1004 ft.. (306 m.) The coal beds occur in the form of a basin which is deepest along a line extending through the central part of the State and bearing a, little west of north. The northern, western and southern borders of this basin lie within the boundaries of the State, but on the eastern side the Illinois field is continuous with the Indiana field. The Bureau of Mines experimental blast furnace was blown with oxygen-enriched blast in combination with natural gas injected at the tuyeres. The air blast was augmented with oxygen to form an enriched blast containing 24,8 pct oxygen, and tests were run at natural gas injection rates of 4.5, 6.0, and 8.3 pct of the air blast. Similar enrichment to 26.8 pct oxygen was tested at natural gas rates of 7.2, 9.1, and 11,0 pct of the air blast. At intermediate proportions of natural gas to oxygen, (1) the fuel rate and the replacement ratio of coke by natural gas were unaffected by oxygen injections and (2) the productivity increased about 4 pct for each I pct oxygen added to the blast. The higher proportions of natural gas to oxygen were less efficient; in return for a lower coke rate, the fuel rate increased and productivity declined. A deficiency in reducing gas imposed a limit upon lower than normal proportions of natural gas to oxygen. Beyond this limit the formation of reducing gas was insufficient to support the rate of metal production. When this condition was encountered, the coke rate requirement for specification iron was abnormally high and production fell off badly. Adiabatic flame temperature is discussed as a means for proportioning oxygen and natural gas additions.

"Smelting of copper-gold ore from nearby Rossland mines started at Trail in the 1890s. As ore from the Rossland mines became exhausted, lead smelting of hand-sorted galena ore from other British Columbia mines was initiated. With the development of flotation technology for the separation of lead, zinc, and iron sulphides in the first two decades of this century, the large Sullivan orebody at Kimberley, British Columbia, became the f oundation for the growth of a major zinc and lead smelter at Trail. Lead smelting began in 1901, electrolytic zinc in 1916, and by 1984, the Trail metallurgical complex had produced 10 million tons of each metal. Its present capacity is 270000 tonnes per year of zinc and 110 000 tonnes/year of lead.This paper reviews the history of technological changes in the Trail production plants, emphasizing the zinc plant modernization program started in the 1970s, and also the planned introduction of the QSL oxygen lead smelting process in the late 1980s. Lead modernization will increase production capacity to a maximum of 160000 tonnes per year.IntroductionCopper-gold ore was discovered at Rossland, British Columbia, in the year 1890, starting a mining industry that was to last over three decade s. Selected ore was at first transported at high cost to distant U.S. smelters, so there naturally followed a decision to construct a small copper smelter to process the local ore to matte. It was built in 1896 at the mouth of Trail Creek on the Columbia River, about 10 km from Rossland. This little smelter was to develop and diversify in the next 90 years into the world 's largest lead-zinc producer).The mining boom that occurred in the northwestern United States and southeastern British Columbia in the period of 1890 to 1910 saw the brief operation of many small local smelters. The only one to survive was the smelter at Trail. The circumstances that permitted its continued life and subsequent growth, form a fascinating history of business deals, litigation, andsteady technical progress.Early investment in local railway transportation and options by F.A. Heinze, the smelter' s founder, attracted the attention of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, which purchased Heinze' s assets in 1898. This provided the capital base for survival and growth of the smelter, which remained and prospered under the Canadian Pacific umbrella for almost ninety years. It was registered as the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited in 1906; in 1966, this name wasshortened to Cominco Ltd.The Rossland mines continued to supply copper ore for the smelter until the late 1920s, but lead-silver ore also became available from the contemporary mining boom in the Slocan area, about 80 km away. In 1901, the Trail smelter diversified into lead; and when the CM&S Co. acquired the St. Eugene Mine at Moyie and the Sullivan Mine at Kimberley, the smelter was guaranteed a firm supply of lead ore. The company also purchased the West Kootenay Power and Light Company, which even before the turn of the century had constructed the first of four hydroelectric generating plants on the Kootenay River near Trail. This acquisition assured the CM&S smelter and its local mines of a stable power supply and the opportunity to diversify into power intensive technology."

One of the first matters to receive attention from the Bureau of Mines when it was authorized to undertake investigations relating to wastes in the mineral industries was the smoke problem at smelting and ore-roasting plants. This bulletin is published by the bureau primarily for persons who seek information on the subject of metallurgical smoke but are unacqllainted with the technical language of metallurgy. It is, of course, not possible to free a techniCal subject entirely from teclmicalities, but, 80 far as possible, statements are made in plain and simple English. Metallurgical smoke causes considerable friction between the metallurgical industry and agriculture in certain parts of the country. Owners of smelting plants are making every effort to devise ways and means to do away with possible damage and annoyance from smoke and are meeting with success. The problem is peculiarly difficult in this country because of the large tonnages of material that must be handled. The solution of the problem is not yet at hand and much work still remains to be done. As the mineral industry is one of the great basic industries of the country and of necessity is entitled to full consideration, it should be accorded freedom to work out the smoke problem to the benefit of all concerned. The effort is made in this paper to present the problem of metallurgical smoke as it actually exists, without bias of any kind. The writer takes this opportunity to express his indebtedness to the sources of information on which he drew, many of which are enumerated in the selected bibliography at the end of this paper. In connection with the author's use of the present tense in describing plants and methods, the reader should note that none of the references in that bibliography is of later date than 1913. Much information was obtained by personal visits and by correspondence, and thanks are hereby tendered to all persons who kindly furnished data. The writer desires to thank particularly F. G. THE 125th meeting of the Institute was held in New York, Feb. 20-23, 1922, inclusive, and was the most successful annual meeting of the Institute ever held; there was a larger registration, there were more sessions of importance, and a greater number of sessions, than in any previous year. The total registration was 1331, comprising 351 New York members, 393 visiting members and 587 guests. At the annual business meeting of the Institute, held on Tuesday, Feb. 21, with President Ludlow presiding, there was a much larger attendance than usual. "INTRODUCTION The technical studies conducted by the Explosives Division of the Bureau of Mines have been summarized in a series of publications issued annually for the past 10 years. 3/ The following account covers studies undertaken from July 1, 1944 to June 30, 1945. The work is set forth under a number of main headings to correspond to the organizational structure of the division, the various activities being under the immediate direction of unit chiefs, who report to the author. Specific credit it due to the unit leader and his assistants.Determination of Ignition TemperaturesThe ignition temperature of mixtures of isobutane and air were determined by the static method using a 131-cc. quartz bull. 5/ The results obtained follow: Prevention of Benzene-Air Explosions by Addition of Nitrogen and Carbon Dioxide The elimination or mitigation of the explosion hazards of combustible gases is a part of the work undertaken by the Bureau of Mines in promoting safety. Explosions can be prevented by the maintenance of concentrations that lie outside the inflammable limits. A procedure has been developed whereby the inflammable limits of many complex gaseous mixtures may be calculated in a rather simple manner without requiring toilsome laboratory experiments. This procedure has been outlined in a number of previous publications. 6./ During the fiscal year under review, essential data required for the calculations of complex combustible gas mixtures containing varying percentages of benzene were obtained. Benzene vapor is a normal constituent of many manufactured gases and is widely used in the solvent industry and in the manufacture of high explosives."

This paper, describing the various mining methods and practices at Britannia mines, Britannia Beach, British Columbia, is one of a series covering mining practices, methods, and costs in the mining districts of the United States and Canada. The Britannia property has been operated continuously for 30 years, and in that time many diverse methods have been used in exploiting the various types of orebodies worked. Under normal conditions mining methods include surface gloryholes, shrinkage stoping, shrinkage with powder drifts for primary breaking, horizontal cut-and-fill, horizontal and inclined square-setting, and timbered and open rills, the three latter systems being combined with close filling. The Britannia method of mining, a large-scale retreating shrinkage system usually combined with powder drifts for primary breaking, has been developed and applied here very successfully. Each block of ground as developed is studied as a separate problem, and the mining method, or combination of methods best adapted to the work in hand is applied thereto. Operating at, capacity, the series of mines produces 7,000 tons of ore per day.

Surface coal operations in which mining activities are conducted above old underground workings experience hot holes after drilling. In a coal mine, hot holes are defined as shot holes, which after being drilled have an in-hole ambient temperature of 40°C or above or show a temperature increase of 3°C or more during monitoring. Hot holes and other cavities, such as cracks, pose health and safety risks to workers, such as exposure to hot air and high concentrations of noxious gases released from these holes. In addition, workers may be exposed to premature detonation of explosives caused by in-hole temperature increases and chemical reactions. To this end, Coaltech Research Association commissioned a project to develop a Best Practice Guideline for the management of hot holes. This paper is a compilation of the activities conducted in the development of the Best Practice Guideline between 2021 and 2022. The activities included a review of standard operating procedures and hot-hole temperature-measuring and -monitoring devices, and the assessment of current hot-hole procedures at selected mines. The results indicated that management of hot holes requires a focus on pre-emptive risk assessment of mining blocks, identification of hot holes using the correct temperature-measuring devices, and continuous monitoring of hot holes from the time of drilling until just before blasting. Hot-hole management accessories, such as polyvinyl chloride sleeves, were found to be effective in insulating the hot-hole emulsion from the rock mass temperature, thus preventing the potential for premature detonation.

Toward the end of 1920 , the average grades of ground feldspar offered to the pottery industry were so poor and so generally unsatisfactory that many of the largest consumers decided to take active steps for their own protection . A few of the potters made arrangements to grind their own feldspar , while others asked the Bureau of Mines to make a detailed study of the problem and to suggest methods of improvement . Accordingly such a study was undertaken, the partial results of which are outlined in this preliminary report . The outstanding features of the present feldspar industry which are of interest in this connection are stated below. (1 ) Many grinding companies do not own or control all or even a major part of their sources of crude material , but buy in job lots from many sources . (2 ) There is great need of more adequate engineering and chemical control over mines and mills . ( 3) ~ Out of date , inefficient methods and equipment for mining and grinding are in common use . (4) Little or no cooperation exists between feldspar producers , but on the contrary many feldspar companies are exceedingly secretive . This tends towards (a) preservation of obsolete methods ; ( b ) want of knowledge of the essential features of production , market requirements , and the relation between total milling and consuming capacities of the country; ( c ) inefficient and often mistaken trade practices ; ( d) unprofitable and even ruinous competition in dull periods . (5) The small size of many feldspar deposits precludes maintenance of an efficient organization at each individual mine . ( 6 ) Many of the best deposits of feldspar situated close to railroads are becoming depleted , which results in gradual lowering of grades , and increase in cost for better grades . (7) There is a lack of exact mowledge of the ceramic properties and behaviour of feldspar by some consumers , which results in ( a) purchase of feldspar on the basis of price alone , thus encouraging low production costs at the expense of quality , and ( b) inefficient and expensive cross- hauling of both crude and ground feldspar .

This report concerns types, quantities, specifications, and uses of non-metallic minerals as a basis for improving their supply, conservation, and utilization. Supply-demand details concerning mineral fillers, roofing granules, and roofing rock used in asphalt are incorporated in this report, along with highlights on production and sales of roofing, floor tile, and other related asphalt products of California. Comparable data for the United States are included. Although large quantities of commercially prepared mineral fillers are used in asphalt for paving and related applications in other States, addition of commercial fillers for these uses rarely is required in California because of the natural fines available. On the other hand, California manufacturers of asphalt products other than paving utilize about 300,000 tons of asbestos, diatomite, limestone, mica, soapstone, slate, and other nonmetallic minerals as filler, mainly for roofing and flooring. Also, about 500,000 tons of roofing granules is produced in California, most of which goes into roofing manufacture in California. In addition, a significantly large and growing tonnage of relatively coarse mineral aggregates are used on low-angle, built-up, asphalt roofs to produce an attractive surface and offer protection against the elements. Nearly all minerals used in asphalt products manufactured in California come from local sources, except asbestos and mica--and there are indications that local deposits of these commodities could be utilized in some use categories.

When the Organic Act of 1910 established the Bureau of Mines within the Department of the Interior, the Bureau's programs involved only health and safety research and, education, and fuels testing. As the Federal Government's primary agency for research in minerals, the Bureau has expanded its scientific and technological investigations to mining, processing mineral substances, eliminating occupational health and safety hazards in the mineral industries, economic development, and resource conservation. Today, Bureau activities cover a broad spectrum of programs for meeting the diverse (and sometimes conflicting) needs of mineral industries, government, and the public. In the 1960's, the Bureau initiated programs to resolve environmental problems associated with past mining and mineral processing. In the 1970's, the energy crisis raised the national consciousness concerning our limited supplies of domestic mineral and fuel resources. Dependence on foreign sources of raw materials critical to our national economy and competition from other countries for these world supplies stimulated the need to conserve and use with intelligence the Nation's minerals, metals, and fuels.1

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program again forged ahead during 1952, and important technical advances led the way to improved methods of converting coal and oil shale into liquid fuels. Marking the eighth year of activities under this program, the pact 32 months brought a new domestic industry nearer realization.The increasing demand for gasoline and oil and the rising cost of finding new petroleum, coupled with America's growing dependence on imports and the unsettled international situation, have continued to emphasize the importance of the Bureau's Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program. Oil, the indispensable material of wartime, likewise has critical importance in peacetime, touching as it does the life of every individual. Supplementing petroleum with synthetic liquid fuels will not only conserve this Nation's petroleum reserves but also will bring into greater use its tremendous reserves of coal, as well as the vast deposits of oil shale for which no other practical use has yet been found.The Bureau of Mines Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program is one of the most important and far-reaching of the Government's research projects. Through development of commercial synthetic liquid fuels, the United States can obtain oil products from its great inland reserves of coal and oil shale to supplement petroleum in any quantity that may be necessary, consistent with economic and other requirements, such as national defense. The use of raw materials from such deposits would be of highest importance in wartime, when shipping lanes are menaced by the enemy. The Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program of the Bureau of Mines and research efforts of industry have advanced. American technology to the point where it is now possible to begin the design and construction of prototype plants. Certainly, significant improvements will be made as the program continues, but this prospect in no way alters the fact that the start of prototype plants should be encouraged. These plants, as the first step in the development of a synthetic fuels industry, would serve a threefold purpose:"

"Emission of industrial wastewater containing harmful oxoanions is one of the serious problems on account of its toxicity and the environmental pollution, especially caused by boric, phosphinic, arsenic and antimonic species. In this study, we developed a novel treatment technique of such polluted-water by hydrothermal mineralization. The treatment is “Geomimetic” method for precipitating oxoanions in aqueous media as natural ore resources by using hydrothermal treatment with calcium salts mineralizer. The treatment made it possible not only to detoxify the polluted-water, but also to recover the calcium minerals such as Ca2B2O5·H2O, Ca5(AsO4)3(OH), etc. Concentration of each ion in treated-water was lower than that of effluent standard in Japan. Moreover, the residual concentration of each ion was independent of the initial concentration, but it depends only on the solubility of the formed mineral under hydrothermal condition. Therefore, the hydrothermal treatment could be recommended as one of the treatment techniques of polluted-water.IntroductionVarious oxoanions such as boron and arsenic oxo-anions have high toxicity against human health and the environment. They are important resources, however, for plating or advanced material manufacturing industries[1-3], from which the wastewater containing these oxoanions is generated every day. An appropriate treatment is often required for industrial wastewaters to attain national effluent standards of Japan (NESJ, B: 10 mg/dm3, As: 0.1 mg/dm3). On the other hand, there is no production of arsenic and boric resources in Japan, and they are expected to be recycled. Therefore, the establishment of a system for the removal and recycling of arsenic and boron from wastewaters is of global significance.Several methods to remove them from aqueous media have been already reported by using adsorption[4], electro-coagulation[5], membrane separation[6-8] and biological techniques[9]. However, these methods have the following problems because of their stability in water. (1) Removal yield is low, especially for tri-valent arsenite ion (AsIIIO3 3-) and borate ion. (2) The applicable concentration range is narrow. In addition, the used adsorbents or collected residues after treatments are sill hazardous wastes, so that they must be treated by a proper method. But, it is very difficult to convert them to recyclable resources at most industrial plants. These problems are caused by the difficulty to recover these oxoanions as stable solid precipitates with low solubility in water. The establishment of recycling system of these hazardous compounds will be one of the world-important issues, especially, in Japan, which is poor in natural resources. On the other hand, compounds that contain high arsenic concentrations and are insoluble in water, are often found in natural minerals, for example, as haidinglite (Ca(AsO3OH)·(H2O) or Johnbaumite (Ca5(AsO4)3(OH)). This fact suggests that nature has an ability to produce insoluble As-bearing minerals. Similar phenomena can be found in case of boron, antimony, etc."

A methodology has been developed and demonstrated to be effective in reclaiming surface-mined land for a forestry post-mining land use. The forestry reclamation approach (FRA) has been applied, almost exclusively, to flat or gently rolling surfaces. One of the primary steps in the FRA is to loosely grade the top 1.22 m (4 ft) of soil or substitute root growth medium to avoid excessive compaction. Concern has been expressed by regulators and the public that loose grading on steep slopes (i.e., greater than 23°) could lead to slope failures, which is one of the issues that the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA) sought to correct. A field investigation was conducted at a steep-slope contour operation in eastern Kentucky to test the applicability of FRA in this setting. Final grading was performed according to FRA standards. The surface consisted of two distinct substitute rooting media. One was unweathered gray sandstone and the other was a combination of gray sandstone, brown sandstone, and topsoil. A variety of native hardwoods was planted following the FRA guidelines. The slope was instrumented with 70 survey monuments to monitor for mass movement. The reclaimed spoil was also characterized using bulk density and penetrometer resistance methods. The characteristics of both spoils are similar to those observed on flat to rolling surfaces where the FRA has been used and, after one year, approximately 70% of the trees had survived. During this first phase of investigation, there has been no major mass movement of the slope and slope stability analysis indicates that the application of the FRA has little impact on the overall stability of the slope. "Since 2005, longwall coal mine operators in Pennsylvania (US) have been required to collect extensive hydrologic and biological data to document pre- and post-mining conditions of aquatic resources (streams and wetlands) overlying the subsidence control plan areas. Continued operation of the longwall mine is dependent upon empirical data demonstrating that the undermined aquatic resources have either been maintained or restored to an accepted range of pre-mining conditions. This study used quantitative hydrologic methods and comparative biological metrics to examine response of aquatic resources to longwall subsidence at the Bailey Mine located in Greene County, Pennsylvania. This study analyzed data from over 25 miles of streams and over 8 acres of wetlands that traverse the 4,779-acre study area. Hydrologic analysis of flow intermittency suggested that there are variable degrees of change to headwater streams immediately following mining; however, the majority of the effects are reversible through streamflow mitigation measures. Furthermore, the post-mining discharge from streams can be restored to within the range of pre-mining conditions the majority of the time. Biological assessments showed that greater than 95% of assessed stream length has maintained its ability to support benthic macroinvertebrate communities following mining and intervention (i.e., mitigation). Comparative metrics of the benthic macroinvertebrate communities showed that the biological community in 48 of the 50 sample sites is being maintained or restored across both high- and low-gradient streams. The effectiveness of intervention was further substantiated by the similarity in recovery times between streams having no intervention (median = 2.1 years, 95th percentile = 4.9 years) and streams with intervention, when recovery times were measured from the date of the intervention (median = 1.7 years, 95th percentile = 4.7 years). Changes to individual wetlands were observed between the pre- and post-mining assessments, but cumulatively a net gain of 7% in wetland acreage was realized. Hydrologic assessments were used to infer whether there was a potential that streams had been affected by mining; however, the ultimate test of stream recovery is based on biological metrics that establish the relative quality of the biological communities following mining. Overall, the hydrologic balance is being protected and the aquatic life use of streams is being maintained within the Bailey Mine’s subsidence control plan areas."

His first product, introduced in 1949, was the TK10, a mobile crane that, at the time, was a groundbreaking innovation to the heavy construction industry. From there, the company began its growth into a world-leading heavy equipment manufacturer that always relied on innovation.In October, Liebherr gathered a group of mining and construction magazine editors in Leoben, Austria to take a look at the company’s latest addition to the global mining and construction markets. On the mining side, Liebherr provided a demonstration of its T-236 100-t (110-st) haul truck and the PR- 766 50-st (55-st) crawler tractor. The one-day demonstration took place at the Erzberg iron mine near Leoben, where both machines are being proven.The Erzberg Mine, operated by VA Ersberg, has been in operation for about 1,300 years and is said to be Europe’s largest surface mine. It employs about 230 people and mines about 12 Mt/a (13,200 million stpy) of ore, producing about 3 Mt/a (3.3 million stpy) of fine-grained iron ore.T-236 rigid-frame truckThe new T-236 rigid-frame dump truck, with a diesel electric drive system, is Liebherr’s entry into the 100-t (110-st) class and is the first in this class with a four-corner, oilimmersed braking system. The haul truck was first introduced during the 2016 MinExpo in Las Vegas, NV. The unit has since successfully completed its testing phase and is currently in its first field operation trials at the Erzberg iron mine in Austria."
