In this study, Raman spectroscopy was utilized to investigate the evolution of char structure in pulverized coal (PC) during microwave irradiation. The results indicated that though microwave treatment was carried out at low powers of 132W or 264W, significant variation in char structure was still observed. Char structure turned out to be more irregular firstly under microwave irradiation. However, char structure of superior regularity was obtained with the extension of irradiation time. It can be conclude that short time microwave treatment may facilitate the chemical activity of coal, while long time microwave irradiation on PC may deteriorate its combustion or pyrolysis property.

"This paper will discuss the recent situation and future of the zinc industry from the technical point of view. It includes recent problems faced by the zinc industry and technological developments. One of the biggest problems of the zinc industry is raw materials. Traditional zinc concentrate becomes much complicated with respect to its chemical and physical properties. Thus, each process faced various problems. Also, secondary resources, generating so called recycling processes, become much more important. Recycling is, of course, a very important aspect for sustainable development of society. Secondary raw material also includes a great variety of impurities not included or very low levels in traditional zinc concentrate. Some problems are caused by these impurities. To overcome these problems some technological challenges have been taking place. Details will be discussed in the symposium.IntroductionZinc is a very useful metal based on its elechtro-chemical, chemical and physical properties. The most important usage is galvernizing of steel which is used for automobile, construction and a very wide range of other indutries. Also, zinc is used for dicasting and other alloys such as brass. Smelting of zinc is different from other metal because of its electro-chemical properties. Many parameters should be controled compared with other metals such as iron and copper. Typical zinc smelting processes are the Imperial Smelting Process (ISP) and the electlolytic process. The ISP process is a pyro-metallurgical process using a blast furnace. The electrolytic process is a hydrometallurgical process. Both processes are energy intensive, and the smelting process cost is increasing because of higher energy costs. The situation of the ISP is very severe because of higher coke prices. Recently, many ISP plants have been shut down because of economic reasons"

The entrainment of copper matte in the slag during the slag skimming stage of a Peirce-Smith converter was studied with a dam break model. Experiments were carried out with a range of fluid pairs where the lighter fluid was allowed to overflow a weir and the amount of entrained heavier fluid measured. The resulting entrainment is measured as the ratio of the heavy to light fluid withdrawn. The fluids include oil-water, water- glycerol and salt solutions-water pairs to cover a wide range of densities and viscosities. It was found that the Richardson number, Ri, correlates the entrainment well. For the case of the liquid-liquid interface initially at the same height as the weir, the entrainment was found to vary with Ri-1/3. The transient flow was simulated with a volume of fluid (VOF) code written in-house and used a stairstep approach to represent flow obstacles. The code was validated against the experimental results with good agreement for the variation of the heights of the two fluid with time. The simulation showed that the prevailing mechanism for entrainment is due to a pressure differential created across the liquid in the converter during pouring resulting in the heavier liquid being rotated upwards and over the weir.

The volume of low-level contaminated soil at the. Department of Energy's Nuclear Weapon Sites are in the order of several million tons. Most of the contaminants are uranium, plutonium, other heavy metals and organic compounds. Selected Physical separation processes have shown demonstrated potential in COD Centratingthe radio nuclides in a small fraction of the soil. Depending upon the size, nature of bonding and distributions of radio nuclides, more than 90 percent of the radio nuclide activity can be concentrated in a small volume of fraction of the soil. The physico-chemical separation processes such as flotation in a mechanical and microbubble tall column cell have shown, promising applications in cleaning up the high volume contaminated soil.

"IntroductionThe utilization of silver in the electronic industry has been increasing in recent years. It is desirable that valuable metals are recovered from the used scraps of these industrial goods. Condensor chips, for example, contain silver, palladium, and Ag-Pd alloy. The dissolution behavior of silver was studied assuming that scraps such as used condensor chips in which Ag-Pd paste is used are subjected to wet treatment.ExperimentalIn this study the powder, granules, and flakes of silver were used in these nitric acid leaching experiments. The nitric acid solution was agitated in a glass reactor with a magnetic stirrer and heated to the required temperature. The experiment was started by putting the silver sample in the solution. After the leaching, the solution was filtered and the concentration of silver in the filtrate was analyzed by ICP.ResultsIn dilute nitric acid of less than 5 N, silver powder dissolved easily with increase in the concentration of nitric acid and temperature. However, the more intensive the stirring of the solution was, the lower the dissolution quantity became. Fig. 1"

All projects that are implemented, have been given corporate go-ahead on the basis of a set of clearly defined targets. These are typically a production goal at a capital cost, operating cost and production schedule, that will yield an acceptable return on investment by the companies internal criteria. The challenge for the implementation team is two-fold, firstly to properly define the project criteria prior to board approval and secondly to deliver an operating facility that meets these objectives, in particular the ROI. The paper addresses the issues a project team and the company management must address for a successful project. Key questions that will be explored are: ? What is the status of key technologies? Are they well proven in commercial practice, completely novel or in between? ? Is the project schedule driven by market constraints or cash flow constraints? ? Are the risks of fast tracking worth the potential rewards? ? For a retrofit project, are all the technical and production interfaces and issues known at the time of approval to proceed? ? How much should be invested in technological development and engineering and at which phase? ? For an owner-operator, how much responsibility is it wise or appropriate to push down to vendors? The answers to these questions for a specific project will define how you go about a project, the resources required, the contracting strategies, the phasing and the appropriate level of investment in the definition and procurement phases, prior to starting major capital commitments and construction.

"A computational fluid dynamic (CFD) model of a conventional tuyere blown slag fuming furnace has been developed in Eulerian multiphase flow approach. The model was developed by coupling CFD with kinetics equations developed by Richards et al. for zinc fuming furnaces. The model integrates submerged coal combustion and chemical reactions with the heat, mass and momentum interfacial interaction between the phases in the system. The model predicts the velocity, temperature field of the molten slag bath, generated turbulence, vortex and coal utilization behavior from the slag bath. The highest coal penetration distance was found to be at l/L = 0.2, where / is the distance from the tuyere tip and L is the total length (2.44m) of the modeled furnace. The model also predicts that 10% of the injected coal bypasses the tuyere gas stream un-combusted and carried to the free surface, which contributes to ZnO reduction near the free surface.IntroductionSignificant metal values are often discarded with slag in the form of metal oxide produced by the smelting industries. These metal values can be recovered from the slag by proper treatment. Zinc slag fuming is such a process, where a reductant source (usually coal) is injected in the molten slag bath to reduce dissolved ZnO from the bath into metallic zinc vapour. The process can be carried out in either conventional tuyere blown furnace or top submerged lance (TSL) smelting furnace. Conventional slag fuming processes are carried out on batch basis in a rectangular tuyere blown furnace. Approximately 50 tonnes of charge (either molten slag or solid slag) is fed to the furnace at the beginning of each fuming cycle. Two opposing sets of submerged tuyeres are employed to inject air and pulverized coal into the molten slag bath to carry out combustion and reducing reactions."

"In this study, the utilization capability of the solid wastes taken from a commercial roof tile and brick factory in Eskisehir of Turkiye has been investigated in the production of stoneware bodies which can be formed by slip casting. At the first stage, X-ray fluorescent (XRF) and X-ray difractometer (XRD) analyses of the wastes were performed. Depending upon the results, a body recipe with an optimum casting concentration was adjusted. The bodies obtained from prepared slips were fired at 1160 oC as glazed and unglazed forms. Then, they were undergone certain tests in order to determine their firing shrinkage values, water absorption levels and optical parameters. To establish what kind of phase formations occurred after firing as a result of waste incorporations into bodies XRD analysis was conducted. Additionally, effects of such a compositional modification on the microstructure of the bodies were examined by a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Consequently, it was concluded that fired roof tile and brick wastes could be evaluated in both glazed and unglazed stoneware bodies. Introduction Stoneware is the general name applied to many wares fired between 1150 and 1300 °C. It has a different and denser structure than those of ceramics produced at lower temperatures. Fired stoneware possesses a lower water absorption value. When matured at a high temperature, it gives a possibility for the use of feldspar as a main ingredient [1-2]. Colors of stoneware can be brown, red, white and most of the times beige. Firing usually takes place in oxidation atmosphere but also reduction can be rarely used. This naturally has an effect on the body colors [3]. Earth, which contains clay minerals, becomes plastic mud when mixed with water, has a capability to be easily shaped and can be hardened without cracking if fired at 900-1000 °C, is referred as one of the brick and tile raw materials [4]. Natural and aesthetic appearances of buildings obtained with brick and tile products, which make them preferable especially for construction sector, are of importance. Because clays being main raw material of that type of productions generally do not exist as pure materials in nature, their usability depends on their mineralogy and impurities they contain [5]."

"The present study evaluated the feasibility of using iron species generated by electrocoagulation (EC) as an adsorbent for removal As(III/As(V) from aqueous media. The full potential of EC was evident in that more than 99 percent of arsenic was removed without addition of chemical reagents. The adsorbent iron-species generated by EC was characterized by Chemical Analyses, X-Ray Diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscopy. The experimental data were correlated by employing a Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Thermodynamic parameters such as ?H o , ?S o and ?Go were calculated. The adsorption process was found to be exothermic and spontaneous.1. IntroductionArsenic contamination in potable water supplies is a serious health problem in many countries around the world. Groundwater arsenic contamination in La Comarca Lagunera Mexico was first reported 30 years ago [1]. Arsenic concentration has been found in well water from several communities ranging from 0.25 to 1.0 ppm. The elevated concentration of arsenic in water, above that originating from natural sources, has been attributed to the use of organoarsenical pesticides in the cotton fields and also to the millions of tons of waste slag generated at a local lead smelter [1]. The main arsenic species present in natural waters are arsenate ions 3- 4 AsO (oxidation state V) and arsenic ions H3AsO3, - 2 3 H AsO and 2- 3 HAsO oxidation state III). However, As(V) ions are most prevalent in oxygenated water while As(III) is found for anaerobic conditions, such as in well water or in groundwater. Conventional methods of arsenic removal rely on chemical-based treatment with lime, alum coagulation, iron coagulation and chemical oxidation. Other processes used with varying degrees of success include adsorption onto activated carbon, reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, manganese dioxide, magnetite and ionexchange resins [1-3]. These conventional processes generate a considerable quantity of secondary hazardous waste such as solid sludge, which also pose serious environmental problems. These drawbacks have forced various industries to search for effective, alternative treatment technologies for arsenic with a preference for electrochemical methods."

Bath smelting options for recovering valuable metals from jarositic residues containing 22-28% lead and 16-30% sulphur obtained from pressure leaching zinc-lead-copper bulk concentrates were investigated using thermochemical computations and crucible-scale experiments. Direct fuming of lead and zinc from a slaglmatte bath at 1250-300°C was demonstrated successfully. Up to 93% of the lead was recovered in the fume and steady-state recoveries of zinc were predicted in the range 82-95% under these conditions. The energy required for the fuming reactions was supplied by partial combustion of the fuel, added as char, with air. An important feature of the process is that the recoveries to the fume are not significantly affected by changing: the fuel:air ratio over a wide range. Thermodynamic computations, confirmed by experimental results also showed that the presence of a matte phase is not essential for high recovery of lead and zinc to the fume. Operating conditions which produced a matte ensured that about 70% of the silver and 80-90% of the copper were recovered into that phase. Approximately 98% of the arsenic in the residue was fumed. In the absence of matte the slags contained high arsenic levels (260-330 ppm) but low arsenic (20-60 ppm) levels were achieved when matte was produced.

The recovery of copper from chalcopyrite concentrates by leaching is difficult due to the slow dissolution kinetics of this mineral in most leaching media. However, recovery of copper from sulfidized chalcopyrite (a mixture of CuS and FeS2) by leaching is faster and could be selective depending on the leaching media. In this paper, the result of an investigation on the H2SO4-O2 pressure leaching of sulfidized chalcopyrite is presented. The variables considered in the study were stirring speed, concentration of sulfuric acid, temperature, and partial pressure of oxygen. The experimental data indicated that stirring speed over 500 rpm and sulfuric acid concentration over 0.1 M had very little effect on the leaching rate. An increase in temperature from 90 to 100 ºC increased both copper and iron dissolution; however, further increase to 120 ºC affected negatively the copper dissolution. Oxygen partial pressure was found to be the main variable that controls the copper/iron selectivity of the leaching. An increase in oxygen partial pressure increased significantly the rate of copper dissolution but deteriorated the copper/iron selectivity. The analysis for sulfur of the leaching solid residues indicated that most of the copper sulfide sulfur in the sulfidized concentrate oxidized to elemental sulfur.

"Atlantic Copper is one of the largest copper producers in Europe. Its production facilities, including a primary copper smelter and an electrolytic refinery, are located in Huelva, on the southwest coast of Spain. These installations enable the smelting of over 1 million tpy concentrates to produce up to 260,000 tons per year of cathodes and 900 ktpy of sulphuric acid.Since 1970, several improvements have been made at the Converters Area such as modifications of primary hoods, operations with an OPC system, installation of scrap chargers, the recent installation of the secondary hoods and other environmental projects. All these modifications have been aimed at increasing the capacity of our smelter while keeping our continuous environmental commitment.This paper describes the modifications and improvements carried out at the converters area and our proposals for future developments."

Slag foaming proves to be both blessing and curse for the process productivity, depending on where in the process it occurs. In pyrometallurgical processes, slag foaming is often a result of chemical reactions taking place in the slag. As the slag composition and reaction rates are changing, foaming occurs under dynamic conditions. In the present work, slag foaming was studied with XRF. The foam displayed a fluctuating behaviour, unaccountable by existing models. The concept of foaming index was found not to be satisfactory in describing the foam, resulting in the need for alternative theories. The rate of fluctuations was seen to be related to the difference between rate of gas generation and rate of gas escape from the system (Ug-Ue) as well as the bubble sizes. Thus, model development of dynamic foaming phenomenon has to take the effective chemical reaction rate as well as the bubble sizes into consideration. The first step in obtaining foam is to form bubbles. In the present work, gas bubbles were generated through chemical reaction at interface between two immiscible liquids and the bubble formation was studied optically. The gas bubble size was seen to be uninfluenced by the reaction rate. However, bubble formation was seen to take place in one of the phases and since the bubbles consequently traversed the interface under the influence of buoyancy, the viscosity of the first phase was found to influence the final bubble size where increased viscosity would yield a larger bubble size.

Sustainability requires more from engineering than the development of technology. Engineering must also take into account the effects of that technology on the integrated social, economic, and environmental processes that constitute our society. Schumacher introduced the powerful concept of an appropriate technology, by which he meant a technology that is appropriate to the environmental, educational, cultural, and economic situation for which it is intended. While the principles of appropriate technology have been most commonly applied in the developing world, they are equally valid in the developed world as well. In this paper we will review appropriate technology and discuss its role in helping to define a way to think about this broad view of sustainable engineering. We will end by presenting one strategy for introducing the concepts and applications of appropriate technology in an engineering curriculum.

This paper is to discuss the removal of non-metallic inclusions from molten steel using a high frequency magnetic field. In experiments, a certain amount of aluminum was added to the molten steel in a crucible to generate aluminum inclusions. A layer of aluminum clusters were observed close to the wall of the crucible after the electromagnetic (EM) field was imposed. Three dimensional EM field and fluid flow simulation were performed and showed that over 91% inclusions transported to the skin depth (2.31 mm) of the molten steel. The calculation of inclusion removal agreed well with the experimental observation. The separation mechanisms of inclusions from the molten steel by the high frequency EM field were discussed.

A research-scale fluidization and magnetization roasting device was developed to evaluate a processing option that might offset the complexity and high cost of the conventional magnetization roasting process on siderite. In this study, the operating parameters of the fluidization and magnetization roasting device for siderite were evaluated through cold-flow tests and magnetization roasting tests. The reaction mechanism functions of the fluidized roasting process are revealed with kinetic studies.

Silver has the highest electrical conductivity of all metals and consequently this property is an attractive feature which makes it a leading candidate for use in electronic devices. The research conducted was focused primarily on the development of a process for obtaining a deposited silver-coating onto alumina, for applications related to electrical-conducting devices and, ancillarily, catalysts. Alumina balls and plane substrates were utilized for the investigation. The coating process employed an aqueous arnmoniacal silver-nitrate electrolytes with a formaldehyde solution as the reductant. Modifying additives - an activator which would be expected to promote good deposition-characteristics onto the (dielectric) substrate and an inhibitor which would obviate homogeneous reduction (precipitation) of silver was observed when the activator-containing silver-electrolyte reductant constituents were combined. However, the silver-electrolyte/reductant system with inhibitor could be employed (at 80°C) to achieve a viable (subject to future research optimization) coating on alumina. The influence of the processing temperature on the deposition process was delineated during the course of the research. The morphology of the deposited-silver on the alumina balls was assessed by SEM imaging. A tape-peel test was employed, with the plane substrates, to semi-quantitatively characterize the adhesion to the alumina.

"One of the most essential problems associated with the treatment of EAF dust is its high content of halogens. For most thermal processes for zinc recovery, such as the plasma processes with a zinc condenser, the halides in the gas stream will form a dross phase that results in a low zinc yield. For those with zinc oxide as main product, such as Waelz oxides, the high halogen content in the product implies a great degradation of the product quality and the product can only be sold at a low price. Further processing of zinc oxide with high halogen content either by pyrometallurgical or hydrometallurgical processes will also result in process problems.This paper will review the pre- and post-treatment alternatives for halogen removal based on the comprehensive characterization work that has been carried out at MEFOS and the preliminary experimental results.The experimental results show that chlorine and fluorine content could be reduced to 450 ppm and 50 ppm respectively by selective sulfation, and to about 200 ppm by soda leaching. Selective sulfation of zinc oxide in the EAF dust will also be discussed."

The Mike deposit is a large, low grade, oxide, gold-copper system found at the intersection of two major faults that bound the Carlin Window, Eureka County, Nevada. Disseminated gold occurs within metamorphosed and hydrothermally altered silty limestone (Silurian-Devonian Roberts Mountains Formation), beneath 182 m (600 feet) of barren Tertiary sediments and tuffs. A supergene copper oxide blanket occurs beneath and locally overlaps the lower portion of the gold zone. Decalcification argillization, silicification, and brecciation are superimposed on earlier calcsilicate hornfels and marbles. Altered dikes and sills intrude the gold zone and are locally auriferous.

Plastics recycling has become an established national industry in Korea. However, it is still in its infant stage and experiences growing pains. In Korea, mixed plastic wastes generated from households after hand picking and/or mechanical sorting processes amount to 1,700,000 ton per year in 2005, and most of these waste are finally end up with landfill and/or incineration due to lacks of separation technologies and economical reasons. These plastic wastes can not be used as raw materials for chemical and/or thermal recycling because of their high content of PVC (upto 4.0 wt.%). In the present work, gravity separation system has been developed to remove PVC from the mixed plastic waste and recover the individual plastics. The separation system mainly consists of air classification, crushing, feeding system at fixed rate and wet-type gravity separation system. The gravity system based on centrifugal separation also consists of mixing, precleaning, separation, dewatering, recovery system, wastewater treatment system, etc. The main objective of this process to be developed is to achieve high separation efficiency of polyolefins (PE, PP, PS) with less than 0.3 wt.% PVC content and less than 10% moisture content in the final products. The system with a capacity of 0.5 ton per hour is developed and operational results are presented.
