Although the number of operating longwall mining systems has remained relatively consistent over the past five years, longwall production levels have increased significantly during this period. Longwall production currently accounts for approximately 50% of U.S. underground coal production. While longwalls are highly productive and offer other advantages, operations employing this method of mining continue to experience dust compliance problems. This increased longwall productivity has meant that far more dust is being produced. An improved understanding of the longwall face ventilation system and advancement of face ventilation technologies are necessary to ensure all face personnel are allowed to work in an environment that is free of excessive levels of airborne respirable coal mine dust. The Dust and Toxic Substances Control Branch of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's Pittsburgh Research Laboratory has examined several basic principles of the longwall face ventilation system, and has evaluated the effectiveness of numerous improved face ventilation techniques for longwall mining systems. These include identifying improved techniques for measuring face ventilation parameters on longwall mining sections and investigating the fundamental relationship between face air flow and the entrainment and dilution of respirable coal mine dust. Studies have been completed to determine the impact on face dust levels from using belt entry air to ventilate the longwall. Novel methods have been identified to increase the amount of face air flow and to manage face air flow to most effectively minimize face workers' dust exposure. Unique systems of auxiliary face ventilation have been developed and evaluated at full-scale, simulated longwall test facilities. The theoretical and applied aspects of each of these principles and technologies are discussed. Application of these results, throughout the longwall mining industry, as documented from surveys conducted in the early 1980's and 1990's, have reduced the health hazard associated with excessive exposure to respirable coal mine dust.

A low-grade cassiterite-magnetite ore from Sichuan province, China, is finely disseminated, assaying 0.39% Sn and 23.20% Fe, respectively. Mineralogy studies show that the fine-sized cassiterite is mainly disseminated in iron minerals and gangue. Moreover, the embedded size of cassiterite is very fine and must be ground to -0.01 mm to achieve a degree of liberation of about 90%. Therefore, fine grinding needs to be conducted to get a high quality tin concentrate and a great loss of tin cannot be avoided when treating the ore by gravity concentration. Based on the above facts, a two-stage separation, with a low intensity magnetic separator and a shaking table, was selected to test the ore. Compared with other similar plants, a relatively good separation has been achieved. Three acceptable products for smelters were obtained as following: iron concentrate assaying 61.69% Fe with a recovery of 75.09%, tin concentrate assaying 27.21% Sn with a recovery of 56.97% and a sulfur concentrate assaying 40.86% S with a recovery of 32.03%, respectively.

The Regional Connector Transit Project is a 1.9-mile-long underground light rail system that will connect LA Metro’s A (Blue), E (Expo), and L (Gold) Lines in downtown Los Angeles. This $1.75-billion design-build project is scheduled for revenue service in Spring 2023. The project consists of 21-foot diameter twin-bored tunnels, a 300-footlong crossover SEM cavern, three new underground stations (at 1st Street/Central Avenue, 2nd Street/ Broadway Avenue, and 2nd/Hope Streets), and cut-and-cover tunnels along South Flower, Alameda, and 1st Streets. This paper, which is the continuation of our previous paper presented in RETC 2019—LA Metro Regional Connector Transit Project: Successful Halfway-Through Completion, will provide insight regarding the construction of major components, and the system integration and testing work undertaken for this complex transit project.

The main constituent of the feed to the "Sulphide Section" (31 t/h), in the F. Sartori Plant (6000 tid) of the Miniere di Mon)eponi(Sardinia), is the ore of the Campo Pisano -Funtanaperda Mine (1 ? Difficulties have always been experienced in the treatment of this ore, owing to the extramely fine Pyrite-Sphalerite intergrowth and to the high Pyrite and soluble salts contents. The first mentioned difficulty was overcome with a rather complex flowsheet (see fig.1A and lB)(2); the others with a reagent combination that required a pH of 11 in a pulp loaded with soluble salts. This meant high consumption of alkalizer, and also of the other reagents; furthermore the alkalizer had to be mainly NaOH with only minor amounts of lime, because the latter tended to depress not only the pyrite but also the middlings, which were supposed to float. With dialchylditiophosphate alone as a collector, a lower pH could have been used, but a certain amount of amylxanthate was indispensable to promote flotation of the middlings. On the other hand, a bulk-flotation of sphalerite and pyrite at low pH could not be very advantageous on account of the high pyrite content in the feed(3).

Ilmenite concentrates prepared from beach and dune sands of Florida, India, Australia, and other localities deviate to varying degrees from the theoretical composition of pure ilmenite, and generally contain more Ti02 than the formula FeTiO3 would indicate, and some Fe203. This variation in composition is due to different amounts of altered ilmenite in the concentrates.(l) The alteration has been shown to take place by oxidation and leaching of the iron in ilmenite, to yield residual products consisting of amorphous or very finely crystalline titanium dioxide and ferric oxide, Other studies (2) have stressed that ilmenite may alter first to an amorphous titanium-iron oxide, or to an amorphous mixture of titanium and iron oxides, with later alteration to crystalline titanium dioxide. There has been some speculation as to whether alteration of ilmenite is usually caused by weathering or by hydrothermal processes,(3, 4, 5) Three main methods of approach were used to study the mechanism and rate of ilmenite weathering, (1) Etch tests were used to learn the relationship between crystallographic orientation and the rate of chemical attack on ilmenite. (2) Altered ilmenites in New Jersey sands were compared with ilmenite in rocks of the area from which the sands were probably derived, (3) Experiments were carried out to determine at what rate, and by what agents, originally fresh ilmenite could be altered in the laboratory under simulated weathering conditions.

In an approach to the complicated study of bauxite from Les Baux de Provence it is necessary to consider the paleogeographical context of all the bauxites in southern France. These bauxites are of Karstic type, belonging to a metallogenic area extending from the Pyrenees Mountains to the Alpine Massif. Within this area each deposit does not always correspond to the same geological period. There are differing opinions regarding the origin of Karstic-type bauxite and a discussion of these various theories is beyond the scope of this paper. Bauxite of Les Baux, in Provence, was discovered in 1821 by the chemist, Berthier, near this picturesque village located in the region of Arles. It is Les Baux from which the name of bauxite originates. For a long time this bauxite was of no interest because of high silica 'and mediocre alumina content. Besides, the calcium carbonate content is somewhat high and is one of the main characteristics of Les Baux bauxite. The problem of exploration of the Les Baux deposit has been to prospect minable zones according to traditional norms where silica and carbonate are low.

It is well known that manganiferous silver ores containing manganese intimately associated with silver are not amenable to conventional extraction methods. The segregation process has been applied primarily for recovering copper from oxidized and oxide-sulfide ores. A new alternative process combining segregation roasting followed by flotation to recover silver from refractory manganiferous silver ores, was studied using a 23 factorial experimental design. Laboratory investigations have been conducted on a manganiferous silver ore analyzing 0.02% copper, 0.09% lead, 0.33% zinc, 12.55% manganese and 187 g/ton silver to study the effects of additives salt, coke and copper oxide on silver recovery. Results indicate that 79.3% silver recovery can be attained in the absence of copper oxide and 88.4% when the copper oxide content is 1.5% at '750°C, 2% salt and 1% coke and 30 minutes of roasting time. It was concluded that doping with copper oxide improves silver recovery.

The scheduled replacement of Inland's A & B coke batteries in Plant No.3 posed some serious problems in terms of pollution control and strained sources for medium volatile coal for a conventional blend. The state-of-the-art of air pollution control during the charging step in the conventional slot-type coke oven has been less than satisfactory. In addition, the work done at the Illinois Geological Survey showed that by preheating the coal blend prior to charging a greater percentage of Illinois coal could be used to produce a high quality metallurgical coke. To assist The Management in the- decision on A & B replacement, Inland Steel conducted a full-scale test program on coal preheating and pipeline charging utilizing the Coaltek system installed on No. 2 battery of the Semet-Solvay Division of Allied Chemical Corporation. The basic objectives of the test program at Semet-Solvay were as follows: 1. Determine the feasibility of producing high grade metallurgical coke from preheated blends containing more than 60% Illinois No. 6 coal. 2. Confirm the performance characteristics in one of the Inland blast furnaces of the coke produced with 75% Illinois coal in the blend. 3. Verify several claims by Coaltek such as: a) Pipelining the hot coal presents no difficulties while essentially eliminates the air pollution problems associated with the conventional charging system. b) Preheating of the coal blend permits the use of higher percentages of high volatile, marginally coking coals (such as Illinois No. 6) in the blend as compared to wet charging.

Growing demand for valuable battery materials and environmental issues from battery disposal make the recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) essential. Specifically, the green approaches using organic reagents have garnered many attentions for battery recycling. In this study, a synergetic organic leaching system using methanesulfonic acid (MSA) of strong organic acid and citric acid (CA) with good chelating ability was investigated to extract valuable metals from LiCoO2. Hydrogen peroxide was used as a reducing agent to enhance leaching kinetics. Cobalt extraction of 98% and lithium extraction of 97 % were achieved in the optimized condition; 2.4M MSA, 1.6M CA, 1.0 vol% H2O2, S/L ratio 80 g/L, 85 °C, and 1 h. The optimal leaching condition of the MSA-CA mixed leaching system exhibited good applicability to various cathode scraps, such as LiCoO2, LiNixMnyCo1- x-yO2, and LiNixCoyO2. The dissolved Co and Li ions in the MSA-CA leachate were selectively recovered with high recovery efficiencies of 99 % and 97 % as Co3O4 and Li3PO4, respectively. The recovered Co3O4 and Li3PO4 were utilized to regenerate cathode materials. LiCoO2 and LiFePO4 were also synthesized through a solid-state reaction and hydrothermal method. The recycling process based on the MSA-CA-H2O2 synergetic leaching system was proposed, and it might be applied as a green and economical organic leaching system for the recycling of various types of spent LIBs.

"Intrepid Potash, Inc.’s Carlsbad East facility has refined sylvite and produced muriate of potash (MOP) since 1965. In addition to MOP, Intrepid Potash began recovering the mineral langbeinite from a mixed ore reserve in 2005. In 2011 a new langbeinite recovery process for the coarse (+850 micron) size fraction was constructed to enhance the overall langbeinite recovery. Based on the limited mixed ore reserve and an abundance of langbeinite ore reserves the transition of the East plant to a langbeinite only facility was targeted for 2021. Due to a decreasing grade of the mixed ore reserve, declining sales pricing, and high sylvite operating costs a strategic decision was made to accelerate this transition into 2016. To enable a successful transition, a fines recovery system needed to be developed, constructed and implemented. This paper describes the advancement of langbeinite processing at Intrepid Potash and the planning, development and successful execution of the transition to a langbeinite only operation. BACKGROUND Langbeinite (K2SO4·2MgSO4) is a double salt containing potassium sulfate (K2SO4) and magnesium sulfate (MgSO4). It is used as fertilizer and in the industry is described as Sulfate of Potash Magnesia. It is attractive as a specialty fertilizer and in addition to containing a ready source of a primary nutrient potassium, it also provides two secondary essential nutrients, magnesium and sulfur. It is especially attractive for chloride sensitive crops. Langbeinite has a specific gravity of 2.8, a Mohs hardness of 4.2, and is brittle thus very friable. It is the hardest of the saline minerals, and despite its relative softness on the Mohs scale can be very abrasive in process environments and in field applications, probably due to its conchoidal cleavage. Its solubility at 240 g/l is less than the solubility of sylvite (KCl) or halite (NaCl) and due to even slower relative dissolution kinetics washing with cold water has been a common practice for upgrading langbeinite ores. The solubilization/crystallization relationship for langbeinite is different from the majority of other evaporite minerals in that once langbeinite is solubilized it does not form langbeinite again. Instead it gives up one mole of magnesium sulfate, takes on various waters of hydration and precipitates out as either schoenite (K2SO4·MgSO4·6H2O) or leonite (K2SO4·MgSO4·4H2O) depending on temperature. Due to its partial solubility and phase transitions at its surface when exposed to moisture, there is strong cohesion between wetted particles; the resulting stickiness of the upgraded products can create significant materials handling issues unless processed in slurry form or at relatively low moisture levels. Langbeinite has been produced commercially from two locations, the Kalush and Stebnik regions in the Cartpathian Mountains of former Poland and now the Ukraine and from the Permian Basin in New Mexico (Garrett, 1996; Smith 1949). Current production is from two operators in the U.S., Mosaic and Intrepid Potash."

Deep tillage is used widely as a Means of alleviating excessive soil compaction. There has been some concern that the voids created by deep tillage may collapse before a more natural soil structure develops, resulting in recompaction subsequent to deep tillage. A laboratory investigation was conducted to determine the feasibility of pneumatically injecting organic material into the voids during deep tillage to prevent any significant recompaction from occurring. Various amendments were injected into the soil in the laboratory using a small-scale ripping and injection system. Measurements were made of selected soil properties to evaluate the feasibility of this method.

Minnesota's mineral resources are widespread and diverse (Figure 1). In addition to the nation's largest iron and manganese reserves, the state contains sizeable vanadium, copper, and nickel resources. Recently it has been determined that the proterozoic unconformities in Minnesota have a favorable potential for uranium deposits. Finally, major potential exists in Minnesota's archean greenstone belts for gold, silver, and copper-zinc massive sulfides. Many of the state's mineral resources have been found in environmentally sensitive areas. This is not surprising since the natural forces associated with the formation of mineral deposits are often the same processes that create unusual landforms. For example, much of the state's copper-nickel is found within and adjoining the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) and Lake Superior. The history of mineral development on the Mesabi Iron Range has also created culturally sensitive areas. Early iron mining development required the workers to live close to their jobs, and mine wastes were dumped as near the mine as possible. Few, if any, foresaw the time when taconite would be economic to mine. Therefore, it is not unusual to find valuable taconite resources located under towns and waste dumps on the Mesabi Iron Range.

The “Eggequerung” is an important part of the German Railway’s (Deutsche BahnAG) modernized Dortmund—Kassel line. The heart of this 13-km-long (8 miles)construction lot is the double-track Egge Tunnel with a total length of 2,880 m(9,450 ft.). The tunnel was driven using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM).The construction contract also called for a reinforced concrete secondary lining, guaranteed for a full water pressure of 30 m (100 ft.) water column. Preliminary geological study already showed that very problematic geological-hydrological conditions would have to be expected. This talk describes the chosen NATM driving concept that was adapted to the prevailing geological and hydrological conditions, the special driving method applied in geologically difficult zones as well as the water control concept used during driving. The flexibility and the limits of the NATM under exceptional hydrological conditions are illustrated. Also described are reinforced concrete lining works for the watertight secondary vault (reinforced concrete secondary lining without water-proofing membrane).

The story of America's progressing standard of living is the story of machines. The automobile, the airplane and the telephone for example have made our transportation and communication systems what they are today. Even they depend in turn on another machine -- the rock drill. By making it possible to economically mine and quarry minerals in large quantities, this versatile machine supports virtually every American industry relying on the earth for its buried raw materials. And, like all machines, the rock drill's mechanical evolution was stimulated by production demands placed upon it. All percussion drills are mechanized versions of the original drilling unit -- man, Figure - illustrates a double jack team at work before the turn of the century. The man with the sledge hammer is the impact device while the man sitting is the rotation mechanism and feed motor. The first drifter drills (Figure 2) performed the same function but with increased mechanical efficiency. A piston controlled by a valve produced impact. A built-in ratcheting mechanism provided rotation and a hand-cranked screw provided feed thrust. As the industrial revolution proceeded into the twentieth century, the demand for raw materials stimulated refinements of all recovery machinery, including rock drills. As drills became heavier and more powerful, a mounting (or carrier) had to be provided to move the drill from hole to hole. This resulted in the development of the wagon drill (Figure 3). Propelled by muscle power, the wagon drill was for years the standard tool of the surface drilling industry (Figure 4). To study the fracture evolution of overlying strata for ascending mining in a short-distance coal seam group, a two-dimensional physical simulation model was designed based on a specific geological condition. The fracture development zone was divided into the compaction zone and active zone by monitoring and analyzing the macro fracture evolution of the surrounding rock mass during the excavation of multiple coal seams. The secondary fracture development process of the overlying strata was demonstrated with a physical model. The quantity, length, and inclination of the fracture were calculated with MATLAB software, and the results were verified by geological radar. The total number of fractures between two coal seams increased with a “parabola” shape during the excavation of the lower coal seam, the crack angle was mainly vertical and horizontal, and the number of horizontal cracks first increased and subsequently decreased; the excavation of the upper coal seam caused the secondary fracture development process of the overlying strata, and the relief range and its extent increased. The mining-induced cracks from the lower and upper coal seams connected with each other, especially the permanent vertical fracture in the cutting room side and face side. Finally, the three-dimensional gas fissure was formed.

PT Freeport Indonesia’s Deep Mill Level Zone mine is one of the deepest block cave mines in the world and is in mountainous terrain in West Papua, Indonesia. The mineralization is hosted in a skarn deposit in a structural setting that is complex at the footprint, mine and regional scale. Large seismic events and significant episodes of rapid rock mass deformation are potentially critical geotechnical risks during this ramp-up stage of mining. Understanding the interaction between stress, strain, rock mass strength and geological structures is essential to minimize the hazard and engineer control measures to help ensure the safety of the employees while achieving production targets. This paper discusses how the seismicity and excavation damage have been shaped by the interactions between the mine and geological features, and how this affects strategic mining decisions. Additionally, the paper presents a summary of the mitigation measures used for mining the DMLZ in the safest and most productive way. These include improvements to geotechnical characterization of rock mass and structure, dynamic ground support designs, production scheduling for desirable cave propagation and a seismic monitoring system with re-entry protocols.

Taiwan is located in the orogenic belt of island arcs on the western rim of the Pacific Ocean. The structure of the Taiwan coal fields is much complicated as a result of active Cenozoic orogenic disturbance in Plio-Pleistocene time. The abundant faults and folds have created poor structural conditions of the coal seams and some peculiar safety problems in mining however, the domestic coal still played an important role in the economic development of Taiwan for the years before 1968. Because of increasing mining depth and a decreasing number of miners, the coal production dropped from nearly 5.1 million metric tons in 1968 to 2.45 million metric tons in 1981. There were 173 small active coal mines and about 22 thousand miners in 1981. The coal mining in Taiwan has a history of more than one century. Specific efforts have been undertaken in solving major coal mine safety problems such as gas outbursts, bad roofs and weak floors, difficulty in ventilation due to deep underground mining, spontaneous combustion etc. We have thus acquired much helpful experience which, we deem, is worth reporting at this meaningful meeting.

"In the recent past, the mining industry has witnessed a substantial increase in the numbers of fatalities occurring at metal and nonmetal mine sites, but it is unclear why this is occurring. One possible explanation is that workers struggle with identifying worksite hazards and accurately assessing the associated risk. The purpose of this research was to explore this possibility within the mining industry and to more fully understand stone, sand and gravel (SSG) mine workers’ thoughts, understandings and perceptions of worksite hazards and risks. Eight mine workers were interviewed and asked to identify common hazards they come across when doing their jobs and to then discuss their perceptions of the risks associated with those identified hazards. The results of this exploratory study indicate the importance of workers’ jobrelated experience as it applies to hazard identification and risk perception, particularly their knowledge of or familiarity with a task, whether or not they had personal control over that task, and the frequency with which they perform that task. IntroductionAccording to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA, 2015a), 37 mine workers were fatally injured in accidents at metal and nonmetal mine sites between October 2013 and January 2015, following a record low of 16 in 2012 and in 2011. In 2014 alone, 29 mine workers were fatally injured at a metal or nonmetal mine site, and 52 percent of these fatalities occurred at a surface stone, sand or gravel (SSG) mine. In January 2015, Joseph A. Main, Assistant Secretary of Labor for Mine Safety and Health wrote to stakeholders in the metal and nonmetal mining community and identified several areas where improvement was necessary to promote the health and safety of mine workers. One area identified was an increased focus on “daily and effective workplace exams to find and fix hazards” (MSHA, 2015b).Hazard detection is challenging in the mining industry, despite the existence of regulation. Mining is a major undertaking involving the use of complex heavy machinery, equipment and processes as well as numerous and diverse worker activities that take place in a dynamic, challenging environment (Scharf et al., 2001). In other industries that are similarly dynamic and unpredictable, such as the construction industry, a large proportion of hazards go undetected (Carter and Smith, 2006). It is critical that miners are able to both recognize worksite hazards and accurately assess the risk associated with the hazards, because their health and safety depend on their deciding whether and how to remove hazards and mitigate risks."

"Tests were conducted to determine properties of 4 foam agents for their potential use in longwall mining dust control. Foam has been tried in underground mining in the past for dust control and is currently being reconsidered for use in underground coal longwall operations in order to help those operations comply with MSHA’s lower coal mine respirable dust standard (1.5 mg/m3). Foams were generated using two different methods. One method used compressed air and water pressure to generate foam, while the other method used a low pressure air generated by a blower and water pressure using a NIOSH developed foam generator. Foam property tests comprising of a bottle shake test, foam expansion ratio, and water drainage were used to classify foams. The bottle shake tests determined that the lowest concentration of foam agent to be used was approximately 1.5%. Compressed air generated foams tended to have low expansion ratios (10-19) with high water drainage. Blower air generated foams had higher foam expansion ratios (30-60) with lower water drainage. Foams produced within these ranges of expansion ratios are stable and potentially suitable for dust control. The different foam agents produce foams with different material properties. Results of testing eliminated two foam agents for future testing because they had poor expansion ratios. The remaining two foam agents, while having different foam properties, seem to have properties adequate for dust control. These material property tests can be used to classify foams for their potential use in longwall mining dust control. INTRODUCTION About one-half of U.S. underground coal is produced by longwall mining. This technique allows for mining high volumes of coal, producing significant amounts of coal mine dust. This can lead to the overexposures to longwall miners and possibly occupational respiratory diseases black lung and silicosis, which have no cure and can be disabling or fatal. The only method to avoid these occupational illnesses is through elimination of exposure to respirable coal mine dust and crystalline silica (quartz). The current occupational exposure limit for respirable coal mine dust is 1.5 mg/m3 during each shift that a miner is exposed in the active workings of the mine or in mine facilities [1]. When respirable quartz is present, the mine must maintain an average concentration at or below 0.1 mg/m3. If the mine exceeds the 0.1 mg/m3 respirable quartz dust concentration, then the applicable respirable dust standard is reduced, calculated as 10 divided by the percent quartz present [2]. Respirable dust samples collected by U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration inspectors for the five-year period from 2010 to 2014 found that 5.6% (53 of 943 respirable coal mine dust samples) of the longwall operators on the tailgate side exceeded the coal mine dust standard, and 4.3% (76 of 1768 samples) of the jacksetters exceeded the standard. If silica is present, the reduced standard is implemented, meaning that 11.4% (36 of 316 respirable coal mine samples analyzed for dust) of the jacksetters exceeded the reduced standard.
