The Yankee Gulch sodium minerals project (YGP) is a solution mining project operated by American Soda. The mine operates on a federal lease administered by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Commercial operations began in November2000. In 1964, Irv Nielsen discovered nahcolite mineralization where the YGP pilot plant is now located near the Piceance Creek in Rio Blanco County, Colorado (Nielsen, 1969).Development of the project accelerated after Williams Corp., of Tulsa, OK, joined with American Alkali in1996 to form American Soda. Pilot testing by American Soda led to commercial permitting, plant design, construction and startup. Figure 1 shows the location of the Yankee Gulch leases and the location of the upper and lower plant sites.

Modern shield TBMs allow tunnel drives through almost any type of ground. Thanks to high elaborated technical measures, significant subsidence of the ground surface can be almost entirely avoided. The tunnel lining behind the TBM must be capable of withstanding all loads without deforming, especially during ring erection and advance. Single-shell tunnel linings behind the TBM, usually reinforced concrete segmental rings, can be designed to fulfill this demand. With many projects, however, damage occurs to the lining. Repair costs may be extremely high. Reasons for damages and possibilities to avoid them are shown and explained.

Editor’s note: Mining companies doing business in Central Asia, and parts of the developing world, should look for ways to promote community development through the introduction of appropriate technology. This article should be of interest to SME members. It shows sustainable development type projects need not be massive or expensive. Smaller, utilitarian projects are equally valuable to developing communities as they seek to develop their own economic and social infrastructures. Joint Development Associates International (JDA) began humanitarian relief and community development in Central Asia in 1992, following the collapse of the former Soviet Union. Appropriate technology has played an important role in the company’s efforts to assist those segments of society that are most vulnerable to poverty and disease.

Effective solids suspension is a necessary precondition for particle collection, and solids suspension is largely dependent on the hydrodynamics of the flotation cell. This study attempted to correlate the status of the suspension of apatite particles of different sizes in a Denver laboratory flotation cell versus the impeller rotational speed (N) adopted to operate the machine. The latter variable (N) influences the impeller capacity to lift the particles from the bottom of the tank and also to disperse them throughout the volume of the vessel. Such an impeller capacity can be characterized by the critical impeller speed for the accomplishment of solids off-bottom suspension (Nz) and also by the velocity of the radial water flow discharged by the impeller (U) divided by the particle terminal settling velocity (Us). This way, the status of the suspension of apatite particles inside the flotation cell can be characterized by one of three categories: ?segregation? (N/N2 < 0.60 and Us/U > 0.08); ?suspension? (0.60 = N/N2 < 1 and 0.06 < Us/U < 0.10); and ?dragging? (N/N2 = 1 and Us/U = 0.03). The range of impeller rotational speed (N), which was able to suspend the finest particles (Dp = 90 µm), was unable to suspend the coarsest particles (Dp = 254 µm). Conversely, the high value of N (N > 1,300 rpm), which is adequate to suspend the coarsest particles, may promote the entrainment of the finest particles to the froth layer.

Since the mid-1970s, samples of airborne and waterborne fibrous particulates have been collected in the area of the Northshore Taconite Ore Processing Facility by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (PCA), and the University of Minnesota. Indirect sample preparation has consistently been used although other aspects of the sampling methods and sites have varied and analytical procedures were altered over time as more accurate and precise microscopy methods were developed (i.e., phase contrast optical microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy). In the mid-1970s, levels of airborne fibrous particulate in the Silver Bay area averaged from 0.00030 to 0.03 f/ml. This level was significantly greater than levels of similar particulates in the St. Paul, MN area, although two of the Silver Bay sampling sites, considered individually, did not indicate levels of fibrous particulate markedly different than that seen in St. Paul. More recent sampling data (i.e., 1990?2001) indicate mean concentration of airborne fibrous particulates (amphibole-like fibrous particulates) of 0.0020 f/ml with a range of values from 0.0001 to 0.0140 f/ml. Such levels are not significantly different from those seen in other non-urban environments in the US and Europe. Concentrations of fibrous particulates in water samples were higher in the mid-1970 when iron ore tailings were being deposited in Lake Superior, but since the tailings have been deposited on land waterborne levels of fibrous particulate in the Beaver River have remained relatively constant averaging in the range of 7.5 MFL. This level is only slightly in excess of the current EPA drinking water standard for fibrous particulates. Review and consideration of this data is important in determining the potential health risks associated with airborne and waterborne fibrous particulates in the areas of the Northshore Taconite Ore Processing Facility. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. "In 2008, the world quietly hit a milestone that did not receive much fanfare or publicity, but it hit one that marked a turning point in the history of mankind and the way the planet is and will be inhabited in the future. It was in 2008 that, for the first time, more than half of the world’s population, an estimated 3.3 billion people, resided in urban areas. The world’s population had moved from being a majority of agricultural and rural society to an urban society. Andrew Whalley, deputy chairman for Grimshaw Architects, said this change in where and how people live will continue to increase urban populations and, by 2050, it is estimated that more than 6.4 billion people will live in urban areas. To meet these needs, Whalley, speaking during the keynote session of the 2105 Cutting Edge conference in Denver, CO, said future cities will have to be reimagined and redesigned to be more efficient. A large part of that design will be in the infrastructure of those cities.At the Fourth Annual Cutting Edge Conference, Sept. 21-23, much of the discussion was around how the tunneling and underground construction industries improve cities in a number of ways, including societal, environmental and in overall efficiency. There was talk, not just about the improvements that society enjoys at the completion of such projects, but also about the challenges faced by the owner and contractor in the construction of such projects.The conference, titled Urban Tunneling, brought together some of the top minds in the industry to not only discuss the issues faced today, but also those that will shape the industry in the future.For his part, Whalley spoke about a number of projects around the world and how they have impacted society in ways beyond simply providing a better means for transportation of people or water. Notably, he spoke about the Crossrails project in London.London is a city of 8.6 million people and a history that dates back nearly 2,000 years. It is a great example of the challenges the industry faces in bringing modern efficiencies to an established city.Running more than 100 km (62 miles) with more than 42 km (26 miles) of tunnels passing through 40 stations, including 10 new stations, the project is the largest in Europe and will transform the way people move about the city."

Filtration is an important solid liquid separation technology employed widely in the mineral processing industries. The effectiveness of the filtration operation can be influenced by numerous variables, related to the particulate phase, the slurry rheology and the equipment. The classical approach for analysis is based on Darcy&apos;s law. Knowledge of the cake poremicro structure and its correlation to macroscopic cake properties is required to model the filtration operation from a fundamental point of view. Since cake formation seems to occur randomly, a 3D Monte Carlo method was used to simulate cake formation. The configuration for simulation was a space with width of 500 m, length of 500 m and height of 4000 m. Size distributions of five different industrial products whose particle size distributions follow the Rosin Rammler distribution function were used. The particle shape was assumed to be spherical. The simulated cake structures were described in terms of volume porosity (volume of pore space per unit volume of cake) and surface porosity (area of pore space per unit area of a cross section). The results indicate: 1) it is possible to simulate 3D packing, which mimics cake structure, using the Monte Carlo method,2) segregation phenomena occurs during simulated cake formation, 3) the values of calculated porosity for simulated samples B, C, D, and E were lower than those determined for corresponding industrial products Br, Cr, Dr, and Er, and 4)some structures of simulated samples seem to correlate with laboratory leaf test data obtained for different products from plant operations.

In fact, the language in The West Virginia Energy Act governing subsidence mirrors that written in the Federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act as well as other states&apos; statutes. Certain legal and administrative issues, how¬ever, combine to make West Virginia&apos;s regulation of surface subsidence a singular approach.

The number of extended cut mining systems has increased significantly in coal mines over the last decade, and there is a constant push to extend the face ventilation systems to even greater setback distances. The need to maintain airflow at setback distances of 12.2 m (40 ft) and beyond requires that methods for delivering intake air to the face be improved, or alternative ventilation techniques be implemented. The emphasis of this research effort was to examine various techniques to improve the distribution of available air at the mining face in order to reduce face methane levels. A study was conducted comparing the performance of a jet fan, used in conjunction with a machine mounted scrubber, with blowing curtain ventilation in a 27.5 m (90 ft) heading. In addition, a second study was performed on blowing curtain systems examining how scrubber flow, intake air velocity, and curtain setback influence face methane concentrations. Results showed that when the heading advances to a depth of 27.5 m (90 ft) blowing curtain systems were more efficient at diluting face methane levels when compared to a jet fan. Also, increases in scrubber flows and curtain velocity resulted in lower face methane concentrations for blowing curtain systems at 9.2 and 15.2 m (30 and 50 ft) setbacks.

The presentation named &apos;Dewatering of fines by Rotary Vacuum Disc Filters&apos; has an opening why the filtration process is important to the Iron Ore Industry. It goes on to describe the various types of dewatering machines which have been used in this industry in the last 30-40 years, and where the vacuum disc filters now dominates. It presents also the most important design changes which have been made during this period to enhance performance. Further are discussed the principles of filtration and the factors and parameters which influence performance and operating costs. As a closing is presented today&apos;s ideas and thoughts about what can be foreseen of design modifications and improvements in disc filter design in the coming ten years.

The annual conference is organized by the Arizona Conference Board of Directors, which represents SME sections in Arizona and adjacent areas. The conference provides an opportunity for individuals and corporations associated with mining in the region to get together once each year to discuss the status of the industry. Important topics discussed among the attendees included the price of copper, community relations and education.

In the mining industry, where some of the vehicles are larger than a one-story house, tire maintenance cannot be accomplished by the tire shop alone. It takes an army of people to maintain a fleet of 100 trucks that may be transporting gold, iron ore, oil sand, copper or coal from an openpit to a refinery and eventually delivering the product to a customer. Everyone working in and around these mammoth machines has a duty to help with the maintenance of the tires, whether they know it or not. These responsibilities comprise observation and reporting hazards up to and including changing out a tire and recording the information in a tire-tracking program such as TreadStat.

This paper presents the calibration of a real-time aerosol monitor, the TSI DustTrak?, to the NIOSH 5040 method being used by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for compliance enforcement evaluation. The standard NIOSH 5040 instrument for compliance evaluation of diesel particulate matter (DPM) has an inherent time lag of up to two weeks for laboratory processing of sample results. Therefore, providing the underground mines with a means of quantifying DPM conditions in real-time, will enable them to efficiently and effectively manage DPM levels to ensure compliance with the regulated limit.

The present work explores the reutilization of red mud, an industrial waste arising from the production of alumina, as a component of isolation technologies for hazardous substances. The work involved the study and optimisation of the geotechnical properties of red mud in conjunction with adsorption experiments of As(V) and Hg(II). The results from both types of experiments were integrated in a dispersion-diffusion model to calculate migration curves and minimum thickness of the red mud compacted layer. The geotechnical studies showed that compaction increased the stability and decreased the hydraulic conductivity of red mud barrier. Red mud sorbed high amounts of As (up to 44 mmmol kg-1) and Hg (up to 9.2 mmmol kg-1). The calculated minimum thickness of the red mud barrier was 1-10 cm for As and 2-19 cm for Hg, for an operation period of 35 years. The results obtained let to conclude that the reuse of red mud as a component of isolation systems of hazardous substances represents a viable alternative use of this residue.

Several studies have been conducted on blastability and prediction of fragmentation. The term blastability is used to refer the susceptibility of the rock to blasting and is closely related to fragmentation. Parameters that determine fragmentation by blasting may be divided into two groups. The first group consists of blasting design parameters. The blast design parameters are controllable parameters and determined by the explosive engineers. The burden, spacing between holes, bench height, drillhole diameter, stemming height and explosive density are all design parameters. The second group consists of rock mass parameters that are referred to as uncontrollable parameters. The uncontrollable parameters are physical and mechanical properties of rock and rock mass structure. The strength, modulus of elasticity, density of rock, number of joint sets, joint orientation and joint spacing are among uncontrollable parameters. The rock mass parameters and blast design parameters should be considered together to explain fragmentation process. In this study, a blast database was accumulated to use for multivariate analysis. The blast database contains the blasts performed near Istanbul region quarries and the blasts that were preformed in various mines in the world by the blasting researchers. The cluster analysis was used to separate the blast data into different similarity groups. Group memberships were analyzed and checked by the discriminant analysis. Then, the multivariate regression analysis was used to develop a prediction equation for blast fragmentation for each group. Finally, a validation of the suggested models was performed for various mines. The model comprises blast design parameters, mechanical properties of rock and rock mass structure.

Estimation of the cutter life and cost is a part of evaluating performance for a hard rock TBM in any project. Various approaches has been proposed for calculation of disc cutter life in various rock types based on machine specifications and rock strength and abrasivity. Cutter change time is a parameter that is used in some of the estimates and is defined as the average time required for changing a cutter on the cutter head and cutter life is the number of cubic meters of excavated rock per each disc cutter. Analysis of cutter life information of several tunnel projects from around the world has revealed that the published models for estimation of cutter consumption require some revisions to offer a more accurate prediction. The preliminary analysis of data shows that the average cutter change time is approximately 66 minutes for different cutter sizes and there is a minimal difference between corresponding cutter change times of the large (e.g. 19 or 20 in) versus smaller cutters (e.g. 15.5 to 17 in). This paper reviews the available and published cutter life data from various projects. It also introduces new models for estimation of cutter life and cutter change time as part of TBM down time and utilization analysis.

The use of diesel engine locomotives in South African mines can be traced to Van Dyk Consolidated Mines Ltd on the Witwatersrand gold mines in 1928 as a replacement for battery locomotives. The advantages and disadvantages were recognized in those days, and surprisingly, there are no significant additions to this list, but only refinements. In the absence of any Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL) for Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) in SA, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (USA) rule is currently being used as a benchmark for the ventilation engineering designs. This paper discusses the ongoing SA journey of measurement and limitations of exposure data for ventilation planning and regulatory purposes. The currently accepted DPM limits are based upon the belief that they are economically and technically feasible for the mines to reach and are not necessarily health based. For SA underground platinum mines, a median TC/EC ratio of 1.8 with a range of 1.2 to 5.8 was observed. For SA coal mines, a median TC/EC ratio of 1.44 with a range of 1.25 to 2.13 was observed. While it is common practice in the USA to use the ratio of TC/EC for metal mines to be 1.3, the ratio found in local platinum mines is 2.2 and for coal mines, the ratio was 1.53 which is lower than Australian studies, i.e., 1.96. It has been shown that a need for critical analysis of TC/EC ratios exists, and possible reasons for variance must be understood before stringent adoption of overseas recommended limits for DPM. It is hoped that the findings from this paper would provide input to scientific approaches in developing appropriate conversion factors, limits for DPM and also in ensuring appropriate error factors (currently 1.14 for TC and 1.2 for EC) for compliance determination.

The most common methods of processing of uranium ores is sulfuric or carbonate leaching with conversion of hexavalent uranium to uranyl carbonate or sulfate anionic complexes followed by sorption of the later by strong base anion (SBA) exchange resins. It is known that chloride anion has high affinity for SBA resins so that it depresses sorption of anionic complexes of uranyl. Application of the SBA resins becomes impractical for recovery of uranium when chloride concentration in pregnant leach solution exceeds 3-5 g/l [1-3].

The Fifth International Heavy Minerals Conference (HMC) was held Oct. 16-19, 2005, at the Marriott Sawgrass Resort in Ponte Vedra, FL. With SME as sponsor, the 2005 conference marked the first time that the HMC was held in North America. The conference is held every two years and provides an important forum for professionals in the heavy minerals and related industries to meet and discuss issues related to heavy mineral exploration, mining, processing and marketing. Previous locations included Australia and South Africa. The conference consisted of technical presentations, field trips to heavy mineral operations, a trade show and social activities. It was appropriate that Ponte Vedra was selected as the location for the conference. Ponte Vedra, located on the Atlantic Coast 17 km (10 miles) southeast of Jacksonville, FL, is the birthplace of heavy minerals mining in North America. Ponte Vedra beaches were mined from 1916 to 1929 in what was then called Mineral City. Though Ponte Vedra is now a golf and beach resort, there are still four heavy mineral mines operating within an hour’s drive. Today the Ponte Vedra Country Club and Golf Course is situated in the center of the former mining site.
