INTRODUCTION Today, conventional raise boring is an accepted method of development in underground mines and on major construction projects. Over the years that this technique, and its associated machines and tools, have been under development, many articles have been written on the subject. To a great extent, these papers have reported operating results of one or more specific projects or have been generalized reviews of state-of-the-art machines and tools. This paper is intended as a review of the technique from an operational standpoint. Conventional raise boring, as opposed to the related variants box hole drilling and underground blast hole drilling, is a two step process consisting of the pilot hole drilling and reaming cycles. This author has covered the subject of pilot hole drilling in another article (1) . A good review of the current machines and equipment has been presented by Monroe (2) and an overall review of this entire technology was published by E&MJ (3) and Mining Journal, April, 1983 (4) . The subject of the reaming cycle is presented here together with some of the technical aspects of how the drilling tools are intended to be used. The concept of disposing of liquid industrial wastes by deep-well injection is not a new one. Brines associated with crude oil long have been disposed of in this manner, with the additional benefit of aiding secondary oil recovery. More recently, with the expansion of nuclear energy, the lethal, highly radioactive wastes which are by-products of the fission process have created severe disposal problems. During the past ten years, a variety of industries have resorted to subsurface disposal, some of the details of which are given elsewhere (1,2). The list reveals wide variations in injection rate, pumping pressure, cost, and waste disposition. Included are successful installations in Western Pennsylvania.

This paper is directed at interested parties outside the Beach Sand Industry : the scope is quite broad. The geomorphology described is a successful working hypothesis which guided the author during prospecting and pegging campaigns : the author is not an expert in this field. The test data used in the text, for illustrative purposes, is original and may constitute a contribution to the state of the art. The operation- al and design philosophy embodied in the text is personal and describes the author's methods : all practising exponents would differ in some degree amongst themselves on these subjects. In this paper, no criticism of any existing operation or brand of equipment is intended and names are used to maintain a real contact with the subject matter. The author believes that the operational and design techniques evolved in the Beach Sand Industry under continual duress, have a wider application in the mining industry. This glimpse of the Industry is intended to enhance the respect for the present and past members. Space does not permit individual acknowledgements.

The annual ICGCM China was initiated in 2014. Up to 2023, ICGCM China has been held 9 times. In the 9 conferences during the past 10 years, about 559 papers in 17 topical areas were presented and attendance ranged from 200+ to 400+ each conference. The 42nd ICGCM China was held in Xiangtan, Hunan, China, 10/20–10/22/2023. There were 86 papers presented in 26 topical areas. In addition, an MS and PhD Research Forum was held concurrently with 36 papers presented by MS and PhD candidates in mining engineering from 8 schools. The conference plays an important role in cultivating advanced degree student talents. In this paper, all 559 papers reviewed previously were summarized. In addition, the 42nd ICGCM China is used to illustrate the current and future development trends of coal mine ground control in China. It summarizes the 122 papers (including 36 MS and PhD forum papers) grouping into, and in terms of, 26 topical areas. In addition, its unique and innovative subject areas, short summary of developments as well as conference strengths and shortcomings will also be presented.

At the heart of the mining process are a number of basic and fundamental tasks whose regular and repeated performance constitute the mining cycle. As will be discussed presently, these tasks are the basic components of the mining system. Section 9, Production Operations, provides the mine designer and engineer with an understanding of these tasks and with sufficient design principles to allow this person to create an efficient mine system. This section is meant to be an introduction and adjunct to subsequent sections that describe specific mining systems. However, sufficient design information is included here for the independent design of mine systems that may not be described elsewhere or for subsequent verification of existing designs. For the purposes of this section, mining subsumes excavation; thus this material applies to any excavation process. Accordingly, this section is written in general enough terms to include both surface and underground mining. It may be used also for civil engineering excavations that often involve the same steps. Obviously, the actual procedures undertaken in any specific mining system will appear to be very different from those taken in any other system. This is certainly true when comparing surface with underground methods. Yet the fundamental principles are often the same. This segment is written to explicate the basics. Wherever appropriate, the section will suggest the differences between the application process to surface or to underground mining.

Since its formation in 2004, the Task Group for the Extension of the Continental Shelf (EMEPC) has been collecting hydrographic, geological and geophysical data to support the extension of the continental shelf beyond 200 NM. In 2008, the EMEPC acquired a 6,000 m rated ROV named "Luso" and has been cooperating with several national and international institutions to increase and improve its operational capabilities to conduct research on deep-sea minerals. The Portuguese continental shelf corresponds to a broad area of the seafloor encompassing different physiographic domains: the mid-Atlantic ridge system, abyssal plains and numerous seamounts. From 2008 to the present, the mid- Atlantic ridge and seamounts have been the most visited sites with the ROV "Luso". Several hydrothermal vent sites are known to occur along the mid-Atlantic ridge to the south of the Azores archipelago and mostly within the Portuguese EEZ. Vent fields were also discovered in the extended continental shelf, namely the Rainbow and the Moytirra sites located to south and to the north of the Azores archipelago, respectively. The most studied seamounts correspond to those forming the Great Meteor chain and the Madeira- Tore rise. All these visited sites are related either with the occurrence of polymetallic sulphides or cobalt rich Fe-Mn crusts and the opportunities to further pursue their exploration will be discussed.

Shaft 26B of New York City’s Third Water Tunnel was constructed by Frontier-Kemper Constructors, Inc. of Evansville, Indiana. The 176.8 m (580 ft) deep shaft will serve as the construction shaft for the Manhattan spur of Water Tunnel No. 3. Twelve m (40 ft) of over-burden was supported by a rectangular cofferdam. This shaft was excavated in 13 months, through 164.6 m (540 ft) of rock, using 24,040 kg (26.5 tons) of explosives. Concrete lining cycles included the installation of stainless steel pipes embedded in the lining as the shaft advanced. A total of 635 m (2,084 linear feet) of stainless steel pipe was installed.

A study(1) on the sulfuric acid extraction of alumina from some Pennsylvania ferruginous clays indicated that the published electrolytic method(2)(3) seems to be more efficient than the known chemical methods (4-9) for removing iron from the leach liquor. The main disadvantages of the chemical methods are the consumption of excessive amounts of reagents and/or the precipitation of prohibitive amounts of aluminum. In the electrolytic method, iron is deposited on the mercury cathode, while aluminum is not and remains in solution. This method, however, had been handicapped by the lack of an effective and economical way to purify the contaminated mercury cathode.(7)(l0). Described herein is a scheme for cleaning the mercury cathode, and for recycling the clean mercury back into the electrolytic cell. Armed with such an apparatus, the effects of applied potential, temperature, and operation time on the electrolytic separation of iron from aluminum sulfate solutions were determined. For the sake of comparing results, a term, removability, was coined to represent the percentage of iron amalgamated per unit height of electrolyte (cm.), per unit surface area of cathode (cm.2), per unit of operation time (second).

With the advent of the environmental "green" movement of the 1960s, eventually leading to Earth Day 1970, Congress responded by passage of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), 1970. NEPA gave impetus to a flood of federal acts and laws in the subsequent three decades. Many of those protecting man's environment, health, and well-being also affect mining. For purposes of this chapter, a current mineral law summarization lends itself to a division into two parts: viz., Part I, General Mining Law, and Part II, Enviromining Law. The word enviromining has been coined by the author and is defined and used herein as those federal and state statutes and regulations that were created to provide protection and preservation of man's environment, health, safety, and welfare, and they have particular application to and affect on mining activities. They are listed and treated under Enviromining Laws in Part II. Mining, as a basic industry to provide the essential minerals for mankind's necessities and well-being, truly reflects the mining industry's slogan, "If it can't be grown, it must be mined." Without the basic minerals and rocks won from the earth by mining and mineral processing for their valuable physical properties or chemical constituents, man would soon be forced to revert to the cave-dwelling age. Unfortunately, for man to survive in the "manner of life to which he has become accustomed," he is caught between the demands of cleaning up his deteriorating environment and a continued supply of his basic requirements and amenities for daily living supplied by mining of the earth's minerals. He must have "clean living" at the same time with "good living;" neither is expendable. A very high pricetag accompanies this essential and critical choice which must be paid by society. The United States is internationally recognized as the world leader in environmental matters. Many countries are following suit, principally the other Anglo nations. Because US law is founded and based on English law, on occasion, Anglo-American law is referred to and cited as authority in litigation anywhere in the Anglo-American world of jurisprudence. For this reason, and because mining and the industry is international in nature and operations, some British Commonwealth cases will appear in various topics. If the case is of interest to the reader, further inquiry at a law library may be made through use of the case's style and citation given. "Style" refers to the name of the litigating parties. "Citation" refers to the law publication in which the case and decision may be found, as well as the jurisdiction and court of decision. Citation of cases from the United States and British Commonwealth nations is explained under Case Citation Explanation. Space and time limit exhaustive treatment of subjects and covering all geographic and jurisdictional areas. This chapter is intended as a broad outline and is based on the author's master's thesis at the University of Missouri-Rolla, 1992. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential health risk associated with exposure of dozer operators to whole-body vibration. Measurements were made on 31 dozers used in different surface mines in Turkey. Predictions of adverse health effects of vibration were based on the standards BS 6841:1987, ISO 2631–1:1997, ISO 2631–5:2004, and the EU Vibration Directive:2002. Operators experienced high and comparable levels of vibration acceleration and dose during all dozer tasks: pushing the material (DOZE), moving forward (FORWARD), moving backward (REVERSE), and ripping (RIP). Specifically, DOZE, FORWARD, REVERSE, and RIP showed high potential of adverse health effects in terms of vibration dose according to the worst-case axis and vector sum criteria and a moderate adverse health effect for acceleration according to the worst-case axis criterion. Operators of large dozers were exposed to lower levels of vibration. However, no statistically significant relationship between vibration exposure levels and the propelling mechanism and the service time of dozers, operator experience, operator age, and ground type was found.

Staying competitive in the highly aggressive Powder River Basin is a challenge facing all operators. Any advantage that a mine utilizes to improve productivity and reduce costs could mean the difference in the tight spot coal market. Technological advances in mining equipment and data acquisition at the Eagle Butte Mine in Gillette, Wyoming result in productivity gains and increased maintenance awareness. A new overburden haulage truck fleet with an onboard payload and fault monitoring system interacts via telemetry with the loading shovel and PC's located in production and maintenance offices, enabling staff to monitor production and maintenance on a real-time basis. This paper will describe the system and highlight the benefits realized as a result of its implementation.

The collection zone residence time distribution (RTD) of mechanical self-aerated flotation cells was characterized for liquid and solid per size class (-45 mm, +45-150 mm and +150 mm). It was found that a single large industrial cell with a volume of 130 to 250 m3, now used in plant operations, can be well represented by an LTST (large and small tank-in-series) model plus dead time. From a scale-up point of view, results showed a similar mixing behavior for industrial cells ranging from 130 to 250 m3. Also, single mechanical cells showed a similar mixing pattern (RTD) when compared to large pneumatic flotation columns. It was confirmed that for practical purposes, the mixing condition in a flotation bank of three or more cells in series can be well described by the classical N tanks-in-series model.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is beginning to provide compliance assistance visits to various industries, including mining, for Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA) compliance. The EPA inspectors may consist of a multi-media team deployed to review systems and procedures for EPCRA Sections 302, 304, 311, and 312. The Team’s focus may include emergency response plans, training programs, qualifications of personnel, and release notification protocols. This presentation takes a look at the EPCRA compliance challenges faced by Arizona copper mining and processing facilities.

The economics of precious metals -- depending upon who is involved --could be the economics of hope, of fear, indeed of profit and perhaps survival. For those investors seeking capital gains in a puzzling economy, precious metals involve the economics of hope. Those who are convinced that currency soon won't be worth the paper it's printed on turn to precious metals because of the economics of fear. Gold and silver have been a storehouse of wealth since biblical times. The economics of fear during the past 500 years on the Continent has caused almost every European family to make sure a private stockpile or hoard of gold, silver or coins is at hand in case the paper currency of their country undergoes the kind of disaster that came to the German Mark after World War I. Understandably, for mining companies involved in the production of precious metals, the elements of operations and management are directly concerned with the economics of profit -- and perhaps survival. To the American miner the price of precious metals in the marketplace is a matter of daily concern. After decades of selling silver to the US Government at 64.64 cents an ounce, producing silver mines suddenly became faced with prices breaking $5, $10 and $20 per ounce, and approaching $50 an ounce during the period 1978-1981. What should the miner expect one year in the future? Five years?

The understanding of coal mine roof lithology is a critical component in the determination of engineering solutions for roof control. Coreholes were the first technology available to determine lithology of the roof in reserve areas, but coreholes are typically drilled 500–2,500 ft apart due to their cost and sometimes reach more than $125,000 dollars per hole, depending on mine conditions. The next method developed to bridge this gap was the fiber-optic scope which is utilized in the roof at the faces of underground development. High-end fiber-optic scopes can also be costly (20,000–40,000 dollars) but are more affordable than drilling a corehole, and the information can be processed immediately to make quick roof support determinations. The fiberscope can be operated wherever a roof bolter can drill a hole, and there are no restrictions related to property owners, proximity to streams, elevation changes, etc. The latest borescoping method utilized by mining companies is the use of videoscopes. Videoscopes and all borescopes in general are limited by the lengths of the scope and the length of the borehole drilled in the mine. Videoscopes have the advantage of being able to record video while examining the roof lithology. The information can be recorded quickly underground and then be examined on the surface which allows anyone to capture the video so that a geologist can make lithology descriptions without ever going underground. In the past, videoscopes had limited resolution, a short battery life, were fragile and were relatively costly. As technology progresses, videoscopes have become more affordable, have increased battery life, and offer enhanced 1080p resolution. With the broader availability of affordable videoscopes, videoscopes can be more readily used in various mine environments at every active section underground. This paper will discuss the types of videoscopes available, the features that will aid in lithology description/identification, the deployment methods pertaining to supplemental roof support recommendations, and an advanced methodology to enhance accuracy in understanding roof lithology.

P.T. Freeport Indonesia's latest expansion has increased total mill throughput to 125,000 dry metric tonnes per day. The most recent expansion included the installation of a Semi Autogenous Mill designed to treat more ore than any other single SAG mill currently operating in the world. Also included in the expansion were two large ball mills, rougher and cleaner flotation including conventional and column cells and a regrind circuit. All equipment is supported by a modem distributed control system. This paper describes the design considerations, construction, commissioning and start-up of the SAG concentrator and support facilities and includes an overview of the oreflow and milling facilities.

"Use of the Bond Work Index to size industrial grinding equipment was widely known. Bond also described its application for measuring grinding circuit efficiency. Bond Work Index efficiency has been widely used by industry, but until now without concise standard methods, or a formal guideline, for doing so. The Bond Efficiency Sub-Committee of the Industrial Comminution Efficiency work group of GMSG has produced such a guideline, which follows. It covers the methods and provides examples of how to calculate the Bond Work Index Efficiency of most industrial grinding circuits. Bond Work Index testing equipment and methods are also provided. The next steps are: (1) to establish standard reference testing materials and one or more laboratories to serve as bases for reference testing; (2) to establish the accuracy of relative circuit Work Index Efficiency determinations; and (3), to develop and provide a public data base of industrial comminution circuit Bond Work Index Efficiencies. Conventional Atmospheric Monitoring System (AMS) installations for monitoring CO, CH4, O2 and air-velocity throughout underground mines are usually relegated to a modest 3-5 mile extent and with data communication speeds confined to a ponderous 1-5K baud range. New US-MSHA and state regulations require fast reporting of unsafe conditions, and the old 20-30 minute updates are no longer acceptable. To communicate farther and faster has always been a problem, because data reliability degenerates with excessive distances and high speeds. Because of this, very large mines often resort to costly optical-fiber media, using expensive OF cables and repeaters to obtain the necessary coverage. This entails high initial cost, as well as high maintenance and downtime costs to repair or replace broken optical fibers. Rel-Tek has pioneered with its DX-Bus communication data highway, which uses inexpensive twisted-pair telemetry cables, which can now communicate well into the 20-mile extent of the largest mines -- normally a brick wall for low-tech AMS systems. This extended range, enables the use of twisted-pair cables and provides a low cost alternative to OF systems. This paper discusses the DX-Bus, and its latest accomplishment, the ?B-LINK,? a unique high-speed communication repeater that maintains the 19.2K-Baud data rate. On-going innovations to our workhorse Millennia-DX computer software have kept pace with this extra speed/distance phenomenon, resulting in a dually-optimized AMS package: both hardware and software. Cost savings are substantial, and at no sacrifice of reliability ? nearly always at 100%. Sensor updates are measured in seconds, not minutes and hours. Twisted pair copper cable is cheap to purchase and install and a breeze to maintain. Rel-Tek uses the B-LINK's wide branching capabilities to enable the AMS to extend 20-miles both far and wide. Actual experience in large US coal mines -- both longwall and continuous mining operations -- confirms the large mine performance. The ventilation and safety benefits to the mining industry are immeasurable.

The Cal-Sag Relief Sewer is a 2.6 m (8 ft 6 in.) diameter 9.1 km (5.7 mile) rock tunnel bored in dolomite for the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago. Included in the project are 18 shafts varying in depth free 70 m (230 ft) to 41 m (135 ft). This paper discusses how Healy/Vanessa reduced costs by eliminating conventional hand excavation by hoisting muck from a high production Robbins TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) through small diameter drilled shafts and using a trailing rail-utility backup system.

Mine safety and quality of life of miner working in underground mines depend to a large extent on mine illumination and communication. The provisioning of reliable, safe, and cost-effective illumination is critical, particularly in underground gassy coal mines. To prevent firedamp explosion by electrical switching operation in coal mining industry requires implementing intrinsically safe illumination circuit. The luminaire design also needs to be certified and installed properly. The current illumination systems installed inside mines require a lot of energy which is obtained from nonrenewable resources. In this work, the design and implementation of solar-powered optical fiber-based illumination are studied and implemented in the Jhanjra underground coal mine, Eastern Coalfield Limited, and a Li-Fi-based communication system for underground coal mines is proposed. Silicate optical fibers of various core diameters and numerical apertures are characterized for illumination applications and their efficiencies are reported. The possibility of achieving optical fiber-based solar, laser, and hybrid illuminations in underground mines is discussed. The design and fabrication of a Fresnel lens-based solar tracker for solar illumination are also presented. The optical fiber-based illumination system is installed in an underground coal mine and the illumination of over 70 lux is achieved at the work plane. Finally, optical fiber-based illumination and simultaneous basic Li-Fi communication are demonstrated and will be beneficial to the underground coal mining industry.
