Ecologically acceptable techniques are described for the handling of waste materials from the fabrication industry. New production methods and the recycling of sludges from grinding and other waste materials are suggested.

The thermodynamic activity of MnO was measured in MnO-CaO-MgO-SiO2 slags that are typically encountered in the production of manganese-containing stainless steels. A gas equilibration-quenching technique was employed in measuring the activities. Activities of Mn in Pt-Mn alloys were redetermined at 1600ºC, which reconfirmed earlier results of strong negative deviations. MnO activities were then measured by equilibrating slags of various compositions based on a statistical experimental design procedure with Pt-Mn alloys under controlled partial pressure of oxygen in MnO saturated platinum crucibles at 1600ºC. Activities of MnO were found to increase with increasing concentration of MnO, basicity and CaO to MgO ratio. Two multi-coefficient regression models were developed to predict the activities and activity coefficients of MnO in slags at 1600ºC. Keywords: activity, MnO, slag

He holds the degrees of B Ing (Chem), M Ing (Chem), and D Ing (Metal). President's Award Professor Jannie van Deventer, Head of the Department of Metalurgical Engineering at the University of Stelenbosch, has been honoured with one of the five President's Awards for 1990. These awards are made by the CSIR's Foundation for Research Development. ?Longhole blast hole drilling? techniques are not new to the mining industry. Appropriate mechanization and improvement of the techniques and application has evolved from the industry requirements. Today safety and economics play a larger role in the excavation of ore passes, ventilation passes, and relatively small inclined excavations in the conventional gold and platinum industry. The application of dropraise drilling from the top or from the bottom is discussed investigating the current techniques available, DTH application, advantages and disadvantages, limiting factors, typical layouts and proposals, the drop raising technique and future applications. Similarly, the application of longhole blast hole drilling in tabular and massive orebodies is discussed with emphasis on the DTH application, advantages and disadvantages, limiting factors, typical layouts, the long hole stoping techniques and future applications.

In the context of the construction of an Underground Research Laboratory devoted to the feasibility studies of radioactive waste deposits, it appears of the utmost importance to study the long-term behaviour of rock, over a long time period. In this paper, some results of tests performed on the argillite from the Meuse-Haute-Marne site test in Eastern France are presented. Then a numerical simulation of one of this test using the viscoplastic damaging constitutive law proposed by Lemaitre is presented. Finally, this law is used to simulate numerically the behaviour of the rock at the wall of a circular tunnel in order to determine the extension and the change along the time of the Excavated Damaged Zone (EDZ). Advantages and limitations of the model are discussed. Dans le cadre de la réalisation d’un laboratoire de recherche souterrain conçu pour étudier la faisabilité d’installations de stockage de déchets radioactifs, il apparaît fondamental de caractériser non seulement le comportement viscoplastique à très long terme des matériaux mais aussi les phénomènes d’endommagement consécutif à la redistribution de contraintes provoquées par l’excavation des cavités. On présente ici les résultats d’essais réalisés sur les argilites du site de Meuse/Haute-Marne et destinés à caractériser leur comportement visco-endommageable. Il est ensuite procédé à une application de la loi viscoplastique endommageable de Lemaitre pour simuler l'un de ces tests. Les apports et les limites d'un tel modèle sont mis en évidence par des simulations numériques du comportement de la roche au pourtour d'une galerie circulaire permettant de suivre l’évolution au cours du temps de la zone endommagée (EDZ) à la paroi . Im Rahmen des Baus eines unterirdischen Forschungslabors für die Untersuchung der Machbarkeit von Deponien für radioaktive Abfälle erweist es sich als äußerst wichtig, das langfristige Verhalten von Gestein über einen langen Zeitraum zu untersuchen. Im vorliegenden Artikel werden einige Ergebnisse von Untersuchungen vorgestellt, die mit Tonschiefer aus der Meuse-Haute-Marne in Frankreich durchgeführt wurden. Anschließend wird eine numerische Simulation der Untersuchungen unter Verwendung des von Lemaitre vorgeschlagenen viskoplastischen Verformungsgesetzes vorgestellt. Schließlich wird dieses Gesetz auf die numerische Simulation eines Kreistunnels angewandt, um die Ausdehnung und die zeitliche Entwicklung der Auflockerungszone (EDZ) zu bestimmen. Es werden die Vorteile und Grenzen des Modells diskutiert.

Remediation of the environmental (and social) disturbances caused by opencast brown coal mining in the past in north-west Bohemia isa priority for state environmental policy. In order to provide a concept for full restoration of land following disturbance by opencast mining, a special interdisciplinary project supported by a grant from the Czech Ministry of Environment was started in 2000. The initial stage of the project was intended to summarize and evaluate the findings and the works carried out in connection with various reclamation activities in the afflicted area over a period of more than 50 years. The main aims of the three-year project are to make use of the best available landscape environmental management knowledge in order to harmonize the ecological, aesthetic, productive and social functions of new valuable landscape, including the recovery of historical continuity and an understanding of ?landscape memory?. The basic landscape functions were assessed on two different scale levels. On a large scale, the relevant attributes were investigated over the whole area of the Sokolov brown coal basin (220 km2). The data and experience acquired were used to define large-scale guiding principles for the rehabilitation of a post-mining landscape. On a small scale, the basic characteristics and functions of the landscape were analysed in the Litov-Chlum model area (2 km2). The information derived from this analysis was used to formulate a small-scale approach for the rehabilitation of the model area and also to define general methodological principles. The Faculty of Engineering at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) offers a core first-year engineering design and innovation course, ENGG1000, undertaken during the first and second semesters. This course is highly regarded in the sense that it provides an introduction to many concepts and activities that students will experience over the four-year minimum for which they are undergraduates at UNSW. Approximately 1400 students enrol in the semester 1 course across the Faculty, typically 80 of which undertake the Mining Engineering stream. Students in teams of between six and eight design and construct a physical model to represent an aspect of their chosen discipline. For example, in 2013 the mining engineers designed and built a model dragline. This paper concentrates a major aspect of the course ? the involvement of team members in group activities and the development of the associated skills of peer assessment and peer review as the course progresses over a period of 12 weeks. The term ?peer assessment? in this paper refers to the requirement for students to assess the design components of their peers. This course has a structured requirement in terms of how a successful design is a result of a sound design process rather than a ?try and see? approach. Each student must describe in detail the process they undertook to achieve their final design ? hence the approach is independent of the discipline and/or project selected. Peer review is a process whereby students review the contribution of their team members to the overall design. This activity encourages team involvement and interaction. The final assessment mark can be moderated by the outcome of this peer review, although it is run twice during the semester. The first ?run? is for feedback only during week six and hence no moderation is undertaken. It was found through consultation with students and from questionnaires that both processes are well accepted and highly regarded by students, as they give them a degree of ownership of the assessment process. In addition, the processes provide rapid and relevant feedback on the progress of individual students. Peer review and peer assessment are also considered to be very valuable tools for use in courses in succeeding years. For instance, many of the courses in mining engineering rely heavily on group assessment tasks.

The Konkola Deep Mining Project (KDMP) seeks to exploit the deep level potential of the Konkola Deeps orebody, producing high grade copper concentrates for treatment at the Nkana Smelter and Refinery. As an alternative to smelting, Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) has examined a processing route involving pressure leaching of the Konkola concentrates at Nchanga, with the leach liquor being treated by solvent extraction and electrowinning to produce high purity copper cathode. The solvent extraction circuit would be operated to achieve a high ?delta? copper, thereby providing a strong acid raffinate which can be used in the existing Tailings Leach Plant (TLP) to treat Nchanga oxide copper materials. The main focus of the hydrometallurgical option is to capitalize upon the synergy that exists between the treatment of sulphide copper concentrates (acid producing) and oxide copper ores (acid consuming). The paper discusses the key features of a comprehensive piloting campaign carried out at Anglo American Research Laboratories, which involved the co-treatment of Konkola copper concentrates and Chingola refractory ore in a fully integrated pilot plant circuit.

The AMIRA Code of Practice and Guidelines for Metal Accounting was developed in response to demand from a number of sponsor companies, including one major platinum producer. Since its publication in 2007, the Code has become widely accepted in the mining industry world-wide as a guide for best practice in metal accounting. With the changes in the structure of the platinum mining industry in South Africa over the last 10?15 years, in particular, the starting up of a number of small platinum producers who must have their concentrate smelted and the contained valuable metals refined by third parties, the need for metal accounting systems that are accurate and have an acceptable level of precision has become even more critical to the success of a platinum-producing operation. The current state of metal accounting in the industry is discussed, and possible areas for improved accounting and associated metallurgical efficiencies are identified.

The principles of microwave heating are discussed with reference to dielectric properties, heating phenomena and microwave equipment. Microwave regeneration of granular activated carbon for the carbon-in-pulp process is examined on a laboratory scale, with special attention being given to highlight the problem areas and specific considerations related to microwave heating. Results indicate that microwave regeneration of carbon with 40% moisture on a wet basis by heating to 650°C with steam addition regenerates the carbon to virgin carbon activity levels but with a higher abrasion resistance. A preliminary economic assessment showed that the capital cost for 120 kg/h microwave unit would be R540 000 with an annual operating cost of R 320/t carbon. These figures yield a return on investment of 12%. The aim of this paper is to provide an introduction to microwave heating and to illustrate its application to the microwave regeneration of granular activated carbon for the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) process.

LHD (load haul dumper) is now used as a loading machine for intermediate mechanization in underground coal mining. For survival in the intense competition in the global business environment in recent years it is essential that LHD machine should be reliable and maintained effectively and efficiently. This paper seeks to study the reliability, availability and maintainability (RAM)of an LHD machine with failure and repair data by Markov modelling. The constraints and reasons for machine unavailability are outlined. The reliability and maintainability of an LHD and its subsystems are evaluated. Possible modification or design alternatives are highlighted. Reliability and maintainability of an LHD system are disappointing. In the mining industry abrasion caused by both sliding and impact have over the years resulted in costly damage to installations such as ore passes and silos. Good geotechnical practices combined with the use of a high quality abrasion resistant concrete can prolong the life of such an installation and minimize problems associated with abrasion. In order to maximize the life of an abrasion resistant concrete, the choice and combination of the correct raw materials (cement, aggregate and fibre) and overall mix design needed to make up such a concrete are important. This paper presents technical data and practical experience showing that concrete formulated with calcium aluminate cement resists severe abrasion conditions better than similar OPC-based concretes.

The modern theory of sampling of particulate minerals essentially consists of a recent generalization of the procedures for applying and calibrating the formula usually known as ?Gy?s Formula? for sampling variance control, in which the central concept is a parameter called the liberation factor l. A model which can be experimentally adjusted was proposed by one of the authors several years ago, based on geostatistical considerations. This new model, which relates the liberation factor to the sizes of the fragments and mineral grains, solves the usual difficulties faced in the past, and permits predictions that are well verified in practice. Unfortunately, an older, arbitrary and less general formula is still widely used. The vast majority of today?s misapplications of Sampling Theory of Particulate Materials can be traced back to the use of this antiquated and generally incorrect model. Following a brief history of the models used for the liberation factor and a description of its main variable, the liberation size, and to illustrate the importance of proper modelling of l, this paper presents demonstrative calculations of the absurdity of the incorrect model using the particular case of gold mineralization as an example, followed by some more positive examples of application.

The large proportion of gangue minerals present in platinum bearing ores in South Africa provides challenges to the flotation and downstream processes. In order to take effective measures to reduce their recovery in flotation, an understanding of the mechanisms and factors influencing their behaviour is needed. Typical gangue minerals are pyroxene, feldspar, quartz, chromite and talc. Of these, talc is a naturally hydrophobic mineral and although it is present in relatively small quantities, it has a disproportionate effect as it has a strong froth stabilizing effect, increasing the recovery of other gangue minerals by entrainment. Talc recovery is effectively reduced with the addition of polymeric depressants. Although the other gangue minerals are assumed to be hydrophilic and their recovery by entrainment is expected to follow the water recovery, there is some evidence that they may be activated by the typical reagent suites used. Reagents such as copper sulphate, added as an activator, and collectors are used to selectively induce hydrophobicity on the sulphides. It has been shown that some of these gangue minerals can be activated. This research work investigates whether inadvertent copper activation is mineral specific and evaluates the mechanisms and factors affecting the reversal of activation with the addition of the depressants using electrokinetic measurements, adsorption and microflotation tests. Results are presented that show that the selected minerals do respond differently and that the reversal of activation is dependent on mineral type, depressant type, dosage and ionic strength of the electrolyte.

In exploiting the ultra-deep, narrow reef ore bodies of the Witwatersrand, the ventilation and cooling systems within the stopes play a critical role because of high concentrations of active workers. This paper examines the heat, ventilation and cooling effects of a number of different stoping layouts for narrow reef mining in ultra-deep operations in very hot rock. The stope ventilation and cooling needs are driven primarily by the difference between the air temperature and that of the rock front being excavated. These needs depend on the face utilization, geometry, face advance (rate and direction), layout, backfill, use of water and machinery1,2,3. Detailed studies of different stoping configurations have been undertaken for mining operations extending to depths of 5000m below surface, where virgin rock temperatures approach 70°C. Extensive work has been completed with regard to evaluating ventilation and cooling requirements to maintain air reject temperatures of 28°C wet-bulb and better. This knowledge is being used to determine overall cooling requirements, reduce operational costs and maximize the efficiency of cooling systems. These issues are important when considering both the local and regional air conditioning systems and the most effective application of in-stope chilled water.

The waste-heat boiler is used within the Sulphide flash smelting process as the main dust and energy recovery unit. The large volume of off-gas discharged from the flash smelter is at a very high temperature (1350°C) and contains a significant dust load that subjects the downstream waste-heat boiler to tough and demanding conditions. The boiler cavity is especially prone to dust accretions, fouling, and corrosion caused by accumulation of molten particles and precipitation of sulphuric acid. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is applied within a qualitative study to model the flow and heat transfer distribution throughout the waste-heat boiler. The commercial CFD package, Fluent 6.2.16, was applied to a modified waste-heat boiler (23 m ×11 m ×5.4 m) within the Outokumpu flash smelting process. This investigation focuses on the geometric modifications to the typical boiler design, which includes elevation of the ceiling, placement of flow-obstructing baffles and radiation plates parallel within the flow path. Also investigated were various boiler operating conditions such as the circulation of process off-gas, air leakage from the dust discharging hoppers and variation in inlet gas composition. The geometric modifications had the desired effect of increasing the volumetric utilization and therefore enhancing heat transfer between the boiler surface and the gas stream and dust segregation. Introducing circulated off-gas at a rate of 20 m/s and at a 45° angle to the front of the waste boiler further enhanced cooling while reducing the high impact of the furnace-uptake gas-stream on the boiler ceiling. The placement of radiation plates was found to be very effective in enhancing the heat transfer surface and distributing gas flow within the boiler. Inauguration of the new political dispensation in South Africa in 1994 initiated a dynamic shift in the ownership, management and development of the country’s affluent mineral heritage. The process of substituting the old South African regime with a new equitable system, started soon after the 1994 election of the African National Congress (ANC) to parliament. The Congress’ Freedom Charter revealed the intent of the new dispensation when it called for radical transformation of mineral development. However, since 1955 there have been important changes affecting the rules of mineral development. These are: •Firstly, a drastic change in politics ushered in by negotiation, a spirit of reconciliation and a desire to settle disputes peacefully •Secondly, the globalization of the South African mining industry in tandem with the opening of domestic mineral resources to foreign capitalists; and •Thirdly, the introduction of sustainable development as a holistic approach to mineral development in order to replace traditional narrow-minded environmental management. Each of these significantly shaped the new mineral investment environment of South Africa. This paper represents a summary of the historical developments leading to the current Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act No. 28 of 2002, its Regulations, the much-publicised Broad-Based Socio-Economic Empowerment Charter and its associated Scorecard.

Block model estimates are commonly calculated by the well-established technique of kriging. The mathematics are well established, but implementation details require site-specific considerations. Checking and measuring the performance of the estimates is important to ensure the block model is suitable for its intended purpose. There are different criteria for long-term planning and short-term planning. The implementation of kriging should be checked with cross-validation and assessed for conditional bias and departure from theoretical optimality with the calculation of kriging efficiency. A new expression of kriging efficiency, which compares the kriging variance with the theoretically optimal kriging variance, is developed to aid in this assessment. The assessment tools presented here can be applied in a number of situations; however, ordinary kriging with a reasonably large search performs well in most cases.
