The storage capacity of any given tailings storage facility (TSF) is a function of the volume available for the tailings, for which the geometry of the final upper surface of the tailings is most important. One of the advantages that can be obtained from thickening tailings prior to discharge is that the tailings can be stacked at a steeper beach angle than is obtainable with conventional low-density slurries. However, there is at present no universally accepted method available for the accurate prediction of tailings beach slopes. This paper examines the current situation with the objective of putting the quest for a method for the accurate prediction of beach slopes into perspective. The paper references published reviews of the best-known beach slope prediction methods. However, there do not appear to be any independently verified projects or published references to projects on which a Class A prediction has been validated for any of these approaches, and in those instances where projects have been implemented correlation of actual with predicted slopes has been poor - often due to differences between the properties of the tailings assumed in the design and those actually achieved in the field. The author also concludes that flume-scale testing cannot be taken as a reliable indicator of full-scale performance, and suggests that the outcome of any current predictive method should be used by experienced practitioners as only one of a range of indicators in order to suggest a range of slope angles likely to result for any given operation. Practice has shown that it is possible to manipulate beach slopes by changes to the disposal technique, such as limiting the rate of discharge per discharge point and by increasing or decreasing yield stress, but the impact of these changes cannot readily be predicted. There are also newly emerging technologies, such as the injection of a polymer into the tailings at discharge, that will enhance the dewatering of tailings and hence expedite the consolidation of the tailings, that could well facilitate the development of steeper beach slopes. The overall conclusion is that with the current state of knowledge, the accurate prediction of beach slopes is not possible. Furthermore, in view of the inherent variability of the tailings parameters from any operation, it may well be of more value to concentrate on developing an understanding of the means by which the tailings parameters may be manipulated by the operators to achieve a given beach slope than to concentrate wholly on developing a generic beach slope prediction model.

Over the last decade significant development and use has been made of a simulation model that describes the HCFeMn smelting operations in Assmang Ltd. This spreadsheet based, semi-empirical, predictive model is derived from data from the submerged arc furnaces at Assmang?s Cato Ridge, KwaZulu-Natal smelter site. Departures from the empirical base case mass balance due to changes in the ores, reductant feeds and operating parameters are accounted for by use of fundamental relationships and heuristic type ratios which are applied in an iterative manner in the model. The model performs a sequential set of calculations to iteratively converge on a fully consistent mass and energy balance solution, which predicts Mn alloy and slag output masses and compositions for a given set of feeds. 440 MWh per operating day is used as the basis of energy input. The paper describes the key model components, assumptions made and calculation approach. Added to the mass and energy balance is a cost and revenue balance, which allows prediction of the economic performance for each simulation. Substantial use of the model has been made in simulating the performance of the current Assmang HCFeMn furnaces for both smelter investigations and future production planning. The model has also been a valuable tool in the strategic analysis of the use of future Mn ores and has formed the vital link between mine ore grades (metal and slag elements) and the expected alloy output, grade and profitability. Additionally, the model has been used in benchmarking exercises to predict other Mn smelting operations with remarkable accuracy. The paper highlights some aspects of the approaches taken in using the model to benchmark Assmang?s own furnace performance and cost competitiveness with other producers. For Assmang the development and application of this modelling technology has led to transformation in understanding of the Assmang HCFeMn furnace operations and increased awareness of the potential of its Mn ore bodies.

Ferro-alloys are sold according to the size grading specifications of users. Fines are produced during crushing and the amount produced depends on the crushing process and the physical characteristics of the ferro-alloy. The market value of fines has declined. Market demand is very weak and in some extreme cases is nonexistent. An induction furnace melt process has been developed to solve this problem. The process feasibility has been demonstrated on a small scale with charges of approximately 2.5 kg. The piloting was carried out using a 100 kW furnace with a metal liquid capacity of 140 kg. The operating parameters were determined during the pilot process. The procedures were defined and the equipment required for melting fines produced at the client's site was sized. With the production of ingots, the client can now recover the full value of ferro-alloy fines.

The split-lining structure was newly developed for the air-tight lining of the underground compressed air storage cavern. This structure consists of separated reinforced concrete (RC) segments and air-tight membrane. It is most important for the Compressed Air Energy Storage Gas Turbine (CAES-G/T) system to develop the economical lining. In order to verify the applicability of split-lining structure, CAES-G/T pilot plant was constructed and operated for 6 months. We confirmed the practical usefulness and safety of this system through the operation. This paper presents the mechanical behaviour of surrounding rock mass and the lining structure observed through the operation of CAES-G/T pilot plant. Nous avons mis au point une structure de revêtement modulaire pour le revêtement des cavernes souterraines hermétiques à pression. Ce revêtement est composé de segments de béton armé et de membranes hermétiques. Il était très important, pour le CAES-G/T (Compressed Air Energy Storage Gas Turbine), de développer un revêtement économique. Afin de vérifier l’aptitude d’application de notre revêtement modulaire, nous avons construit un système pilote CAES-G/T et nous avons effectué des essais de fonctionnement pendant six mois. Ces essais nous ont permis de confirmer l’utilité et la sécurité du système. A travers le présent rapport, nous rendons compte de la structure de ce nouveau type de revêtement et du comportement mécanique de la masse rocheuse environnante que nous avons pu observer au cours desdits essais. Als luftdichter Druckbehälter wurde eine gegliederte Belagsstruktur für tief unterirdisch liegende Felshöhlungen entwickelt. Diese Struktur ist aus Stahlbetonabdeckung und luftdichter Plane aufgebaut. Bei der Entwicklung des Pressluftgasturbinen – Stromerzeugungssystems (CAES-G/T) war es die wichtigste Aufgabe, einen wirtschaftlichen Belag zu entwickeln. Deswegen wurde zum Nachweis der Effektivität der gegliederten Belagsstruktur eine Pilotanlage errichtet und 6 Monate lang betrieben. Durch den Betrieb konnten wir die Praktikabilität und Sicherheit des Systems bestätigen. Dieser Aufsatz ist ein Bericht über das Verhalten der durch Betrieb der CAES-G/T Pilotanlage beobachteten Belagsstruktur und umliegenden Felsmasse.

"Coal mining is a thriving industry and 53% of the coal mined in South Africa is used for electricity generation. Mechanization has made coal mining more efficient, but fines generation has subsequently increased. Up to 6% of the run of mine material can report to the -200 µm fraction. Common problems associated with fines handling include dust formation, storage problems, and high moisture levels. A method to turn this material into a saleable product instead of stockpiling it can add value to a company.Briquetting is a pressure agglomeration method where loose material is compacted into a dense mass (FEECO International, 2014). The briquettes must be able to withstand rigorous handling and transport operations without disintegrating. This study aims to investigate the optimum binder and moisture conditions required to produce a mechanically strong briquette using two different binders - a PVA powder (binder A) and a starch powder (binder B).It was found that for binder A the optimum moisture level was 12% to 14%. At this moisture level the greatest compression strength gains were observed, and low amounts of fines produced in impact and abrasion tests. The minimum amount of binder added while still obtaining a strong briquette was 0.5% binder A. For binder B the optimum moisture level was also 12% and the minimum amount of Binder B to be added was found to be 1%. Briquettes that were dried outside reached their peak strength after about four days, whereas the briquettes that dried inside took about 20 days to reach their strength plateau. Hardly any degradation took place on the surface of the binder A film after exposure of 300 hours of artificial weathering. Thermogravimetric analysis confirmed that neither binder A nor binder B will add to the ash content of the coal fines, as both binders totally decompose above 530°C.Binder B yielded stronger briquettes after 15 days and also generated less fines. "As demand for copper and precious metals continues to grow, the need to develop new supplies increases. In the imminent future, the new large global ore bodies are more complex, with enargite, tennantite and tetrahedrite as the abundant contained mineralogy. These resources also contain considerable gold and silver. As such, direct treatment by conventional smelting is prohibitive due to the potential environmental impacts and copper quality issues. This paper outlines the effective application and associated economics of industrially proven Alkaline Sulfide Leaching (ASL) hydrometallurgical technology to an enargite concentrate for selective removal and recovery of arsenic, antimony, gold and silver, leaving a clean high-grade copper concentrate. The fundamentals behind the technology are described, along with those of hydrometallurgical arsenic fixation and stabilization. Flowsheets and unit operations are elucidated, along with an in-depth economic analysis. INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgical methods can be employed for treatment of gold-, arsenic-, antimony-, tin- and mercury-containing materials, concentrates and ores, as well as complex ones containing any number of metals (Conner & Anderson, 2013). The alkaline sulfide leaching (ASL) system is one of these. It is essentially a mixture of sodium sulfide and sodium hydroxide with other meta-stable alkaline species as required. This is a unique hydrometallurgical system beause it is a very selective lixiviant for the distinct leaching of tin, gold, antimony, arsenic, tellurium, silver and mercury (Anderson, 2000, 2001a, 2001b, 2002, 2003, 2012, 2014; Anderson & Twidwell, 2008a, 2008b, 2010; Anderson et al., 2004, 2005; Glazkov & Tseft, 1961; Gnatyshenko & Polyvyanni, 1961; Nadkarni et al., 1975; Nadkarni & Kusik, 1988; Polyvyanni, 1963). Worldwide, ASL technology has been employed industrially in the former CIS, China and the United States for the production of antimony (Anderson et al., 1992, 1994; Anderson & Krys, 1993; Holmes, 1944; Kaloc, 1967; Nordwick & Anderson, 1993; van Stein, 1971)."

This paper describes developments in ferro-nickel furnace technology, specifically improvements to cooling methods, furnace controls, and high voltage furnace operating regime. The evolution of these technologies is briefly presented, as context for describing the current state of the art that has enabled ferro-nickel furnace operation at over 75 MW and specific energy consumption of less than 400 kWh/t dry ore. Examples from existing operations are used to illustrate present best practices, and potential future trends are discussed. The paper begins with an overview of the fundamental aspects of pyrometallurgical treatment of lateritic ores that drive ferro-nickel furnace design. Furnace wall cooling methods are related to the requirements resulting from specific furnace process conditions, including slag and metal compositions, as well as arc and bath power. The benefits of high productivity and low specific energy consumption resulting from high voltage (shielded-arc) operating practice are discussed, along with the furnace controls and electrical power train that enable such operation even with captive power generation.

In this study, reduction behaviours of Turkish chromite concentrate (48 % Cr2O3, 13.30 % FeO, 18.33 % MgO, 12.37 % Al2O3, 5.76 % SiO2) and nickel oxide by Fe-C alloy in graphite crucible were investigated. In the first stage of experiments, steel scraps were melted in graphite crucibles and were saturated with carbon at 1600 °C and 30 min. In the second stage, mixtures of different amount of chromite concentrate, nickel oxide and flux additives (CaO,SiO2 and CaF2) were charged into the graphite crucible containing the Fe-C alloy and heated to 1600 °C for different reduction times (0-180 min) under argon gas. The highest Cr and Ni con-tents in alloys were found as 11.41 and 14.37 % and the highest Cr and Ni recoveries were found as 88 and94 %, respectively at 180 min.

In its most basic form, the process of sintering is very simple, and has been in use since the turn of the previous century. However, while the basic process is simple, control of the process relies on a number of extremely complex interdependent process parameters and requires a thorough understanding of the effect of these parameters on production capacity and product quality. Further, as with many other processes, the process parameters and hence design details of visually similar installations are highly dependant on the specific feed materials. While the industry trend has been towards an increase of capacity in order to lower unit production cost, typically in Iron ore sintering plants, this approach is not always possible for other commodities because of the scale of operation. This paper seeks firstly to describe some design considerations of sinter plants; secondly, to report on results from testwork performed with a specific series Manganese ore blends; and last, to relate these results to the design of new small-scale Manganese ore sinter plants.

Cost analysis of chrome ore reduction is one of the important issues facing ferrochrome producers in today?s competitive environment. Much of this depends on quality and various ratios in the actual ore. The latter can have a direct bearing on electricity consumption and optimum efficiency of the furnaces. While the industry has been successful in reducing costs by designing larger and more efficient furnaces, the role of the optimum blend of ore has perhaps been given less emphasis. This paper will discuss the general specification and metallurgical characteristics of various chrome ores for producing high carbon ferrochromium on industrial scale. By analysing the results obtained from smelting, including chromium recovery and energy consumption, the determining parameters in total cost of ferrochromium i.e. chrome ore; reductant and energy consumption can be optimized. Our study is based on actual experiences obtained from Faryab Ferroalloy Plant over a period of approximately three years.

The shaft-type ferromanganese smelting furnace (SF) at Mizushima Ferroalloy Co., Ltd. has been in operation since startup in 1985 and is continuing to perform smoothly. Production has been increased from the original design capacity of 270t/d to 350t/d by various operational improvements. As a productivity index of the shaft-type furnace, production of 350t/d is equivalent to productivity of 0.9t/m3/d (daily production/cubic capacity of furnace). Recently, various operational improvements were implemented to achieve productivity of 1.0t/m3/d or higher, including oxygen enrichment operation, increased tapping frequency, maintenance of the throat profile, and operation with small lump coke. The target productivity of 1.0 t/m3/d was achieved in January 2005. This report describes the improvements introduced as part of this high productivity technology.

Two Rivers Platinum Mine (TRP) is a 55:45 joint venture between African Rainbow Minerals and Impala Platinum, respectively. TRP is situated on the farm Dwarsrivier 372KT, in the southern sector of the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex. Dwarsrivier is underlain by rock formations of the Critical Zone (Winterveld norite-anorthosite) and the Main Zone (Winnarshoek norite- anorthosite). Two economically significant PGE-bearing layers namely the Merensky Reef and the UG2 chromitite are found within the upper Critical Zone. These are approximately 140 m vertically apart, separated by a series of barren norites and anorthosites. At Two Rivers Platinum, only the UG2 chromitite layer is currently being mined for PGEs. The UG2 sub-outcrops north/south along the Klein Dwarsrivier river valley with a very gentle dip to the west of 7º?10º. At Two Rivers the UG2 averages about 120 cm in thickness, overlain by a waste pyroxenite parting about 20 cm thick, above which is a leader seam about 20 cm in thickness. The mineable cut consists of the leader seam, the waste pyroxenite parting, the UG2 chromitite layer including 25 cm of pegmatoidal pyroxenite footwall, below the UG2 reef to a minimum of 185 cm trackless mining cut. The mining method is a mechanized bord and pillar layout, which will yield a total of 185 000 tons at full run of mine production from the underground UG2 mine.

Artificial neural networks (ANNs) have found their applications in the modelling of unit operations of mineral processing plants. In this research, laboratory-scale tests were conducted, using a three-inch diameter Mozley hydrocyclone. Main parameters included pressure drop at inlet, solid per cent, vortex and apex diameter were adjusted. The corrected cut size (d50c) and the flow rates of underflow and overflow were determined. Multi layers perceptron (MLP) feed forward network architectures were designed to predict the responses. The results showed a good correlation between experimental and network output, for corrected cut size and flow rates. Electron microbeam analysis of metallurgical samples covers abroad field and has applications in the areas of minerals processing, hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, physical metallurgy and corrosion. Some idea of the possibilities of microbeam techniques can be illustrated by examining the following example of a run of mine gold ore sample. Milling and bulk chemical analysis of the ore will provide major and minor element analysis as well as the gold grade. More detailed chemistry can also reveal the presence of trace elements that may be advantageous or deleterious to downstream processing. Electron microbeam analysis can provide additional information in the form of size, liberation, association and composition of the gold, the percentage of refractory gold, the size, liberation, association and composition of enclosing sulphide or arsenide phases and the levels and association of the trace elements that may affect processing. In most cases electron microbeam analysis complements bulk chemistry, and does not replace it. Both techniques should be used in parallel for maximum effect. This paper touches on the origin and history of electron microbeam techniques, as well as the theory behind microbeam analysis and processing. The more common types of instruments and their applications will also be dealt with briefly.

This work analyses a new approach to estimates bubble size distribution of froth surfaces using artificial neural networks (ANN).Also, the robustness of ANN to interpret images with illumination perturbations, produced by light problems or dirt attached to the window of the video camera is evaluated. The experimental work was carried out in a laboratory flotation column, instrumented with an image acquisition system. The images were processed making use of a perceptron model with a hidden layer, sigmoidal transfer function and unitary bias, and the ANN trained with a back propagation algorithm. The results of validation show that ANN are reliable for learning and producing generalized predictions of the froth mean bubble diameter and bubble size distribution, when the model is trained using a database that contains information on the illumination intensity. Longwall shearers usually suffer from excessive pick and pickholder consumptions and severe wear of the back plate of the clearance ring section of shearer drums. In practice, most of the drums were seen to be withdrawn from the face due to the abovementioned problems, while vane picks and their holders were intact due to the improper lacing design of the clearance ring picks. However, few underground investigations and their results on the effect of lacing arrangement of clearance picks on the service life of shearer drums have been published. Nevertheless, the pick consumption characteristics of shearer drums were not investigated in detail, since these are fewer pick consumptions with shearers when compared to roadheaders. This paper is concerned with the comprehensive in situ trials on the effect of lacing of clearance ring picks on the lifespan of shearer drums, and the pick consumption characteristics of longwall shearers at Cayirhan Coal Mine in Turkey. The lifespan of shearer drums employed with shearers in this mine increased 70 per cent, while the consumption rate of clearance ring picks decreased threefold through using an alternative lacing for clearance picks, indicating the significance of utilizing proper design techniques for clearance ring picks for the service life of shearer drums. Statistical analyses carried out, using the raw pick consumption data, implied that the clearance ring picks experienced much higher loads than vane picks, revealing that special attention must be paid to designing clearance ring picks. An average maximum consumption value of 41 was determined for clearance ring picks, with corner-cutting picks having the most replacements, while it was 35 for vane picks, on three-day based pick replacements.

Early research showed that the separation of particles based upon their density was not possible in steadily rising air streams. The terminal velocities of moving spheres are determined by their aerodynamic characteristics. This prevents particle separation by density in standard air classifiers. Passive pulsing air classifiers have accelerated airflow in certain regions, which achieves density-dominant separation. Numerical simulation of airflow within passive pulsing air classifiers was done to estimate airflow patterns near a damper. Analysis of those results shows the significant acceleration of the airflow above the damper. Laboratory trial separations have shown that passive pulsing classifiers are superior to standard air classifiers. The approximately 2800 Ma old Ventersdorp Contact Reef is a unique Witwatersrand orebody, from which about 6% of the world?s gold production is derived. A major portion of this production is mined at depths exceeding 2500 m and deepest levels of mining are at about 3600 m. The orebody?s hangingwall consists of volcanic rocks. This differs from the older Witwatersrand orebodies, which have quartzitic hangingwalls. The thickness of the Ventersdorp Contact Reef is generally about 1.20 m, but is highly variable, at an average dip of about 18°. A pronounced unconformity beneath this orebody is also expressed by varying footwall rock type characteristics and frequent rolling of the reef plane. These rolls follow topographic variations of the palaeo-surface. More geological than rock mechanics studies were performed on the Ventersdorp Contact Reef prior to 1992. Recently, however, a multidisciplinary team comprising various rock engineering and geological disciplines has delineated geotechnical areas by a novel technique. Geotechnical areas are defined by distinct footwall/hangingwall rock assemblages. The presence of three footwall and two hangingwall rock types results in the definition of six geotechnical areas across a distance exceeding 60 km, including about 10 gold mines. Distinct rock mass behaviour has been documented in three of the six geotechnically defined areas. Different rock mass behaviour is expressed by features such as mining-induced fracturing, closure rates, fall of ground characteristics and seismic character. Some geological features override the rock mass behaviour as defined for the individual geotechnical areas. These are undulations of the orebody or the frequency, characteristics and attitude of major discontinuities. It is concluded that the concept of geotechnically subdividing orebodies is not only important for facies delineation and the associated grade, but also needs to be considered for safety aspects, in determining factors such as the appropriate support to be employed.

"*Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B.Eng(Mining Engineering) degreeAfriTin Mining Limited plans to reopen the Uis tin mine in Namibia and establish a pilot processing plant for phase 1 of the Uis tin project, which is scheduled to commence in the last quarter of 2018 . A mining plan is required for phase 1 to supply the new pilot processing plant with 500 kt of run-of-mine ore per annum, for a period of 5 years. New geological mapping and three-dimensional modelling of the mining area were utilized to identify the most optimal mining locations that require low initial waste stripping. An open-pit mining method was selected to target the surface outcrops of the pegmatite orebodies. The mine design criteria were determined and used as input to generate the mine design by utilizing professional engineering software. The mine design was optimized and an overall stripping ratio of 0.81 was achieved. A 5-year production schedule was developed for the mine design according to quarterly periods of three months. A fixed production target of 125 kt of ore was assigned to the quarterly periods, and a ramp-up production target of 65 kt of ore was assigned for the first period. The mobile mining equipment requirements were calculated, and recommendations were made for implementing the 5-year mining plan. IntroductionAfriTin Mining Limited is the owner of the Uis tin project in Namibia and plans to reopen the Uis tin mine, which is located near the town of Uis, approximately 164 km north of Swakopmund. The Uis tin mine was owned and operated by Imkor Tin, a subsidiary of Iscor South Africa. Mining commenced in 1958, and the operation was closed in 1991. Steffen Robertson & Kirsten (SRK) defined the life of mine (LOM) plan for the historical Uis mine in 1989. The SRK report estimated the historical resources and reserves, which consisted of sixteen cassiterite-bearing pegmatite orebodies. SRK developed the most economical pit designs to provide the highest average tin grade at the lowest practical waste stripping ratio. Exploration data from the SRK report of 1989 was used extensively throughout this study, since no new exploration drilling has been conducted. The pegmatites are present as large, subvertical and outcropping veins up to 100 m in thickness. Once phase 1 is operational, mining will be conducted using conventional open pit mining methods. Initial production will be from exposed pegmatite veins in the old mine workings. AfriTin plans to establish a pilot processing plant by the end of 2018 to beneficiate run-of-mine ore at a rate of 500 kt per annum."
