The excursions - Symposium on Ancient Mining and Metallurgy in Southern Africa by BERT WOODHOUSE Excursions add much to any symposium. They enable the participants to see something of the subject matter, and provide an opportunity for informal discussion and for the creation or renewal of friendships. In this respect the Ancient Mining Symposium was well provided for. There were two excursions and both were repeated to cope with the large number of participants.

This paper describes in broad outline the development of a computer programme for determining the effects of changes in various factors in the condenser water circuit on the operation of a cooling plant. The programme is used to obtain design figures which result in minimum total power consumption. This was done for a range of different upcast air quantities, and the implications of low air quantities for heat rejection are discussed.

The report describes the Amuran project in the Welkom area, which is being conducted by six members of the Anglo American Group. The project comprises three plants for the flotation of pyrite, a twin-stream uranium plant in which 'high-grade' slimes and pyrite can be leached separately, a pyriteburning sulphuric acid plant, and a plant for the recovery of gold from calcines. Details of these plants including capital costs and estimated production are given. Mention is made of the adsorption of gold onto activated charcoal and wet high-intensity magnetic separation as possible suitable processes for these residues.

This paper summarizes work carried out on the treatment of fine coal, nominally classified as minus 0,5 mm (wedge-wire screen), which is removed from the raw coal prior to the treatment of the plus 0,5 mm sizes. The minus 0,5 mm coal divides, for treatment purposes, into fines, nominally between 500 and 150 !tm, and ultrafines, nominally minus 150 !tm. Studies on processes for the treatment of minus 0,5 mm coal are discussed, and the lower size limit beneficiated is indicated for each process. The installation and operational results from a pilot froth-flotation plant treating minus 150!tm coal are described.

The hydraulic transportation of relatively dense slurries for backfill purposes is typically carried through vertical and horizontal pipelines under gravity. Wear in backfill pipelines has become such a major problem that it is now one of the main reasons for the relatively slow build-up of placed backfill in spite of encouraging performance results in the gold-mining industry. This paper describes tests on pipeline wear that were carried out on classified tailings from the backfill plant at Vaal Reefs East. The testwork was carried out under various conditions of slurry relative density, slurry velocity, and pipeline diameter. Empirical relationships are presented for each transportation and pipeline parameter evaluated and, finally, overall relationships between pipeline conditions and transportation parameters are proposed.

This paper deals with procedures used for designing pillar systems in hard-rock tabular mines operating at shallow depths, typically less than 1000 m. A comprehensive review if current practice identifies four types if pillars, namely non-yield, yield, crush and barrier pillars, and the main principles for designing these pillars are outlined. It is shown that the current design methods for pillar systems in South Africa are mainly empirical, each mine developing its pillar-design methods based largely on practical experience. This results in varying pillar layouts, even between neighbouring mines, despite similarities in geology, and depth if mining. It is suggested that some current layouts may fall short if being the best as regards safety, the maximum safe extraction percentages, or flexibility in accommodating future mining scenarios in deeper or otherwise different geological conditions.

Slimes-dam construction in the gold mines of the Anglo American Group by w. T. RUHMER. Pr.Eng.. B.Sc. Eng. (Met.) (Fellow) Current practices generally in accordance with the principles of design and operation of slimes dams within the Gold Mining Division of the Anglo American Corporation are described. Although many of the details given are either obvious or have been amply dealt with elsewhere, these have been included for the sake of completeness. The selection of suitable ground for the deposition of slimes, the initial design and construction of a slimes dam, and its consequent operation are presented in logical sequence. Emphasis is placed on the code of practice for the construction of slimes dams issued by the Chamber of Mines of South Africa, and draft regulations (Water Act of 1956) dealing with pollution. Operating costs are included, and possible future trends are discussed.

The professions are subject to a wide range of changing conditions, and are as a result forced to become more competitive. Although there is a need for specialization under these circumstances, no formal recognition, definition, or control of specialists exists. Some of the professions have attempted, over extensive periods of time, to resolve the issues involved, and have met with varying degrees of success. It appeared from the replies to a questionnaire sent to over one-hundred-and- .fifty professionals, that both advanced education and experiential training, are considered to be necessary qualifications for specialization. The opinion as to whether it should be lift to the individual to cal himself a specialist, or whether recognition should be based on peer review, was divided The majority did not want the number of specialists to be controlled The response to the reservation of work for specialists was ambivalent.

Some basic considerations in the application of geostatistics to the valuation of ore in South African gold mines by D. G. KRIGE, Pr. Eng., D.Se. (Eng.) Rand (Fellow) There is much room for improvement in the statistical procedures that have been used by gold mines over the past decade in the valuation of their ore reserves. Improvement depends on the establishment of the extent to which the patterns of frequency distributions and the directional variograms for the gold values vary from area to area within each section of a mine. The application of the lognormal distribution and of the De Wijsian variogram model for routine ore-reserve valuations requires detailed study before some of the reservations still held by mathematical statisticians can be met. This paper provides some preliminary evidence of the extent to which these models can be used with confidence, as well as suggesting how they can be applied to their full potential.

On 23rd November, 1982, a party of 80 members of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy left the Wanderers Club grounds at 07hOO, and were driven in two luxury coaches to the stainless-steel mill of Southern Cross at Middelburg. Southern Cross is a trade name adopted by MS & A (Middelburg Steel and Alloys), who operate two Alloy Divisions (at Middelburg and Krugersdorp) and one Steel Division (at Middelburg). METAL '83 The International Precious Metals Institute has scheduled a seminar on the platinum -group metals for Williamsburg, DB.A., on 10th to 13th April, 1983, and has announced its keynote speakers for each of the seminar's five sessions. Metee '83 METEC - the International Exhibition for Metallurgical Technology and Equipment with Congress - which was to have been held in Dusseldorf from 14th to 20th May, 1983, has been cancelled, and will probably take place in June 1984. Sampling Sampling and sample preparation are crucial activities in many areas of chemical engineering, in the energy and food industries, in metallurgical processes, and in mining and mineral engineering.

(Visitor) Picklers and galvanizers in and around Johannesburg are encountering an ever-increasing problem in disposing of spent liquors from their hydrochloric acid pickling baths. Particularly troublesome is the zinc-contaminated liquor that is produced as a result of the clean-up of rejects from the galvanizing operation. Because of the volatility of zinc chloride. this liquor presents difficulties when processed in a conventional pyrohydrolysis acid-recovery unit. The paper describes the Metsep Process. developed by the National Institute for Metallurgy and Woodall-Duckham S.A. (Pty) Ltd. which involves the use of continuous ion exchange for the separation of the zinc from the pickle liquor. and the use of liquid-liquid extraction for the conversion of zinc chloride eluate to salable zinc sulphate. A description of laboratory and pilot-plant tests is given. and the approach used in the design of a full-scale continuous- ionexchange plant is outlined.

An elevated location of a paste thickener on a ridge close to the disposal area is considered at a Swedish iron ore mine. About 0.7 M tonnes of thickened tailings are planned to be layered as paste in the vicinity of the thickener over several years with pipeline lengths of up to 900 m after about 20 years. In order to clarify the pipeline pumping characteristics of the tailings product for volumetric solids concentration from 40 to 50%, experiments in loop systems with pipeline inner diameters from 0.063 to 0.152 m have been carried out with various types of pumps. The results and comparisons carried out here showed that the performance of centrifugal pumps cannot simply be related to the rheology, but factors related to pump design and build-up tendencies of material within the pump and other particle properties may be of equal importance. During the first years of operation only one thickener underflow pump is required. The reliability and performance for various pump configurations are planned to be investigated systematically in order to meet the most effective long-term solution for paste thickener operation, pipeline distribution and placement in the disposal area as the discharge point advances over the life of the project.

Growing use of deionised water in surface coating techniques by w. F. LORCH Production engineers in the metal plating, paint, plastics-coating and printed circuit industries are increasingly aware of the cost of sub-standard or blemished items which have been poorly processed. An area where quality control can quickly produce higher efficiencies is in the choice of suitably purified water for making up solutions, for rinse baths and 'drag-out' baths, for cleansing lines and electrophoresis tasks, for maintaining electrolyte density and hence consistency, and for facilitating the recovery of valuable minerals. The author of this article examines the general problems of using nonpurified water, and shows how purified water has become accepted by the principal surface coating industries to improve processes and effect economies.

It is commonly accepted that three types of aquifers exist in the Bushveld Complex: (a) alluvial aquifers in areas of river courses, (b) weathered bedrock aquifer formed by the in-situ weathering of the bedrocks, (c) fractured aquifers underlying the weathered aquifers controlled by the regional and local fracturing of the crystalline rocks. Hydrogeological studies conducted in the Critical Zone of the Bushveld Complex in the western limb show that the UG2 pyroxenite layer is of a particular interest and has a unique aquifer property. It yields much of the groundwater inflow into some mines and can be classified as the most important aquifer in the vicinity of the mining zone. The UG2 pyroxenite aquifer is restricted to the dipping UG2 pyroxenite unit. The unit weathers more intensely than the surrounding norites and anorthosites and is characterized by deeper weathering horizons (two to three times deeper than the surrounding rocks). For much of the UG2 mining area between depths of 35 ? 80 m, stoping of the UG2 takes place approximately 5 ? 7 m below the UG2 pyroxenite aquifer, and usually there is no groundwater inflow into the mine workings. However, unsealed deep exploration boreholes intersecting the UG2 pyroxenite and reaching underground mine workings, or mine roofbolts penetrating the weathered pyroxenite aquifer from underneath, can result in significant groundwater inflows into the underground workings. The reason as to why the UG2 pyroxenite weathers more than the norites and anorthosites has not been fully studied but is suspected to be due to the bedding planes of the unit and mineralogical composition of the particular pyroxenes forming the unit, which result in preferential physical and chemical weathering under atmospheric conditions. The weathered pyroxenes form sand-sized, rounded grains with improved effective porosity and permeability suitable for the storage and passage of groundwater. The orientation of the pyroxenite aquifer can easily be determined as it dips with the Bushveld layered strata. No-flow boundaries can be assumed on the hanging- and footwall of the pyroxenite aquifer and the flow rates can be estimated using 2-dimentional analytical equations. However, this must be confirmed with strong conceptual models since the existence of a fracture network connecting the pyroxenite aquifer with the overlying weathered and/or underling fractured aquifers can complicate the system, lowering the accuracy of analytical models and necessitating the utilization of numerical models.

Froth flotation is the primary mineral processing separation step employed in the beneficiation of PGM ore bodies. Anglo Platinum operates a significant portion of the total installed flotation capacity in the PGM industry, which is installed at 20 operating plants across the Bushveld. PGM flotation has undergone a considerable evolution in both the capacity of flotation cells employed as well as in the circuit design configuration over the past thirty years. Certain of Anglo Platinum?s flotation circuits have been in operation for a relatively long period of time, (in some operations installed equipment dates from the 1960?s) and this allows comparative operating performance between various equipment types and circuits to be evaluated. This paper summarizes some aspects of this experience. Research trends in flotation are continuously monitored to incorporate appropriate findings into existing and future circuit designs. Continuous evaluation and monitoring of flotation performance is undertaken to identify opportunities for increasing flotation efficiencies. Mineralogical and fractional analyses of plant composites and survey samples are analysed to interrogate speciation and association data. This analysis has enabled a better understanding of priorities and opportunities for improved metallurgical performance. These opportunities are divided into three improvement areas: stability, liberation, and fines flotation. The paper discusses these, as well as the circuit design improvements required to take full advantage of the opportunities identified.

Handling materials in underground mines continues to be a major safety problem. To help reduce materials-handling injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at the Spokane Research Laboratory is developing, modifying, and testing equipment to replace the necessity of doing lifting tasks manually. To reduce single-event lift injuries, equipment having mechanical automatic weight sensing and balancing control was investigated. The Coleman manipulator was selected for testing. Modifications to the Coleman manipulator to make it more suitable for underground mine use included mobilization, self-containment, all-purpose gripper attachment, and support jacks. To reduce or eliminate the need to clean off manually the materials that commonly plug grizzly openings (timbers, wire mesh, roof bolts, and other debris), a track-guided pincher arm device was developed. The TGPA attaches to an impact hammer head, and the pincher arms are controlled by the operator of the hammer. Oversized rock can be broken with the pincher arms in the up position; the arms can then be lowered to grab and remove debris. Sweeping action to remove cohesive fines bridging grizzly openings is also greatly improved. This device is especially useful in recessed grizzlies. An industrial gun was tested to evaluate its effectiveness in breaking oversized rock. Boulders up to 76 cm in diameter were successfully broken to minus 33 cm. Although methods to control flyrock need to be developed, an industrial gun may be a safe and inexpensive alternative to breaking oversized rock in certain underground mining situations. Nuclear waste should be disposed with the best warranty for the national health and welfare. Among the several repository systems, the deep underground disposal is considered to be a most suitable system in Korean peninsula. However it demands basically the comprehensive stability analysis such as the behaviour of discontinuities in rock mass, the behaviour of ground water, and the reaction of rock stress according to the heat from the nuclear waste. For these purposes, the underground nuclear waste disposal repository was simulated in two- and three- dimensions. It shows that emphasis will be given to the thermal conductivity of discontinuities and the thermal convection of ground water as well as the thermal stress generated by the nuclear waste for design and construction of repository system, and they should be obtained from the field measurements. Déchets nucléaires devront tre déposés avec la meilleure garantie pour la santé et le bien public. Parmi les plusieurs systèmes de dépôt, la disposition en souterrin profond est considérée au système le plus approprié en Corée. Pourtant ce système demande essentiellement l’analyse éten-due de stabilité comme le comportement des discontinues en masse rocheuse, le comportement de l’eau souterrin et la réaction des contraintes de roche selon la chaleur depuis les déchets nucléaires. Pour ce but, le dépôt des déchets nucléaires en sous-sol a étè simulé en deux et trois dimensions. Il montre que l’accent sera donné à la conductivité thermale des discontinues et la convection thermale de l’eau souterrin aussi bien que la contrainte thermale générée par les déchets nucléaires pour le plan et la construction du systèmes de dépôt, et ils devront tre obtenus depuis les mesures sur place. The expected curtailment of activities within the gold-mining industry by the closure of the more marginal mines, and the shortening of the life of the industry as a whole as a result of rising costs and/or an uncertain gold price, are factors that are bound to harm the South African economy in a number of ways. The industry has no option but to regard the gold price, which is determined on the world market, as a given quantity. The remaining ore reserves al tend to be of a lower grade and/or to be found at greater depth. Therefore tighter control of working costs would seem to be almost the only option open to the industry. Working costs can be divided into two broad categories: costs emanating from the environmental characteristics of the orebody, and costs emanating from the general inflationary environment in which the industry has to purchase its inputs. Working costs stemming from the physical environment also fall into two categories: those relating to the grade of the orebody, and those resulting from working at increasing depth and temperature, together with the need to pump increasing quantities of water. The industry is both capital- and labour-intensive in absolute terms, since it requires large inputs of labour as well as of capital. It is limited in its scope to adjust its production function by becoming more labour- or more capital intensive, and is dependent on a large labour force, which cannot easily be replaced by capital inputs. On the other hand, large amounts of capital are required for investment in shafts, development, machinery, and equipment. Since the early seventies, the working costs of the South African gold-mining industry have increased at an annual rate that was significantly higher than the general rate of inflation. This rapid rise in working costs has caused some mines to find themselves in a difficult profit position. At times, the gold-mining industry has even been compelled to restructure its cost/revenue relationship rather fundamentally by revising the grade of ore worked sharply upwards or downwards, as the case may be. The rise in the gold price since 1972 has made it possible for the industry to introduce significant changes in its Black wage policy. The main aim was to increase the permanency of the Black labour force and to encourage local Black workers to join the industry. At the same time, significant increases were also experienced in the cost of machinery and stores, as well as of capital, mainly as a result of inflation. In the study on which this paper is based, the author attempted to measure the influence of environmental factors on working costs, using the physical consumption of electricity as a criterion for measurement. He found that the usefulness of this criterion in relation to factors such as depth, temperature, and water quantities pumped was invariably more than neutralized by the effects of greater productivity and economies of scale. The effects of these environmental factors on the working costs of the industry could therefore not be determined to any degree of accuracy. It seems that good progress is being made with the development of capital-intensive forms of technology aimed at coping with rapidly rising working costs and other effects of increasing depth. Techniques are also being developed to improve rock-cutting procedures and to eliminate the use of explosives in order to introduce a continuous mining process. On the whole, the gold-mining industry seems to be more sensitive to general inflationary pressures than to the cost effects that are associated with depth, temperature, and water quantities pumped. Greater control is possible over physical environmental factors such as the grade of ore mined, temperature, rate and nature of development of a mine, and adaptation of the daily working cycle to a continuous mining process. Wolfe and others hold the view that the industry will lose control over labour costs as a result of the 'sharp increase in wages and the growth of Black trade unions. However, the use of more capital-intensive technology will allow the industry to reduce its labour force, and a smaller, better-trained, and more permanent labour force will enable the industry to cope with the increasingly difficult physical environment and higher wages.

"Government’s equity role in the minerals sector is one of the nationalist measures implemented in order to ensure greater control and management of a country’s mineral resources. This paper evaluates the Tanzanian government’s equity participation in the minerals sector from 1996 to 2015. The research methodology included determination of the number of mineral rights, minimum allowable exploration expenditures in prospecting licences (PLs), and forms of equity role of the government. Data was collected and analysed for PLs, mining licences (MLs), and special mining licences (SMLs).The study revealed a number of challenges faced by the Tanzanian government as regards its equity strategy in the mineral sector. One of the major challenges was the secrecy surrounding agreements and contracts entered into between the government and private sector investors, which were concluded via various business ownership and mineral development projects. This secrecy resulted in non-transparency and lack ofaccountability in the mining industry.The financial benefits accruing to the government were inadequately realized, evident through inconsistent payments of corporate income tax and mining royalties by the mining companies. Furthermore, the government does not have solid mechanisms and frameworks for assessing non-financial benefits, thus it is difficult to measure the impact of these factors.It is recommended that the Tanzanian government review the Mining Act and Regulations of 2010 to include the provision of solid mechanisms and frameworks for all forms of government equity role.This paper is based on an MSc research study undertaken at the University of the Witwatersrand.IntroductionGovernments can grant private companies mining rights to extract mineral resources, or take a stake in the companies as well as establish state companies to oversee their interests in the minerals sector. The establishment of a state company to oversee government interests in the mining sector implies the direct participation of government by way of equity participation. Equity participation or role is defined as the holding of shares in an enterprise, company, or asset by individuals or a body corporate (Otto, n.d.; Brown, 2013; Natural Resource Governance Institute, 2015)."
