To conserve fresh water resources and comply with environmental regulations, DRDGOLD, a South African gold producer re-treating surface tailings, has transitioned to a fully closed water circulation system. Consequently, the accumulation of contaminants, as well as addition of reagents, has led to changes in water composition that have compromised leach performance and overall gold recovery. A two-sample t-test confirmed a significant difference in gold recoveries between the use of Rand Water, which was used as a benchmark, and untreated process water. Atomic absorption analysis of ERGO’s process water, confirmed the presence of iron, nickel, zinc, and manganese. A study of the effect of the identified contaminants on gold recovery showed that iron, nickel, and zinc have the largest negative effect on gold recovery, with iron and nickel being more detrimental than zinc. Sulphates were shown to have a possible passivation effect, which also influenced gold recoveries, although to a lesser extent than the heavy metals. Calcium, when present in excess, had a positive influence on gold recovery indicating the possible formation of a calcium aurocyanide complex. Lime softening successfully reduced the heavy metal and sulphate concentrations, and the gold recoveries obtained with the treated process water were similar to those as achieved with Rand Water.

"Prior to operating a non-recovery coke pilot plant oven, it was essential to ascertain coal cake stability during the loading of a 1 m3 (1 m × 1 m × 1 m) coal cake into the cold pilot-plant oven by a pusher mechanism. Previously established laboratory-scale compaction parameters, to obtain coal cakes with sufficient stability, were employed during the loading tests of the coal cakes. Two different coals were evaluated, namely Waterberg semi-soft coking coal (sscc) and Oaky North hard coking coal.It was demonstrated that lower applied compaction forces (14%) can be utilized during 1 m3 compaction, in comparison to laboratory-scale tests, to obtain similar wet cake densities, owing to differences in the effect of frictional forces. Wet cake densities for Waterberg sscc improved slightly (3%) to 1.13 t/m3 when utilizing 79 t/m2 applied force for a 1 m3 coal cake, in comparison to laboratory-scale tests. Similar results were obtained for Oaky North hard coking coal, with a 6% density increase to 1.27 t/m3 at a similar applied force. Porosities decreased by 13% and 32% for Waterberg sscc and Oaky North coal, respectively, when 1 m3 compaction was compared to laboratory-scale tests. An opportunity exists to further decrease the porosities of Waterberg sscc during compaction, whereas acceptable compaction parameters were achieved for Oaky North hard coking coal. Most major vertical cracks and the partial collapse of coal cakes were mitigated, and high-stability coal cakes were obtained that could be successfully loaded into the pilot-plant coke oven by a pusher mechanism.Factors contributing to the instability of the coal cake during loading into the oven, such as vertical cracks, are (i) the cubic geometry (1 m3) of the coal cake, (ii) friction exerted by the oven floor, and (iii) mechanical problems, such as a misalignment between the pusher machine feeder plate and the oven floor. IntroductionOperation of the stamp-charging horizontal 1 t electrically heated coke pilot-plant oven at Exxaro Resources requires coal cake stability during the loading of a 1 m3 compacted coal cake into the oven. In this case, a pusher plate is utilized to push the coal cake into the oven over the oven floor. This is in contrast to a ‘spoon’ or bottom plate feeding mechanism as found in industrial horizontal coke ovens. The pusher plate loading mechanism dictates that the coal cake should possess high stability and inherent strength owing to frictional forces exerted by the oven floor. In order to obtain a coal cake of acceptable stability for the 1 t coke oven, various compaction parameters need to be verified and established."

Float-and-sink analysis is widely used in the coal industry to obtain washability data, yielding important information about beneficiation potential and performance. This method is associated with health and environmental problems, and research into alternative densimetric methods is important. The RhoVol is a new technology developed by De Beers Group Technology South Africa (DebTech) for the image-based generation of densimetric data from ores. The analysis is done on a per-particle basis, within a size range of +3 mm –8 mm. In this paper we compare the established methods used for the float-and-sink analysis of coal with a new method using RhoVol. The aim of the study was to determine the validity of the information obtained from the RhoVol analyser by performing comparative densimetric analysis on three different coal samples. The results showed that the RhoVol method was more rapid, safe, and precise, but tended to consistently underestimate the density of the coal sample, probably due to varying coal porosity.

It is widely accepted that the type of grinding media has an impact on the grinding chemistry and subsequent flotation behaviour of the sulphide minerals being separated. There are countless laboratory investigations demonstrating that inert grinding media produces more oxidizing pulp potentials, reduced levels of grinding media corrosion products, and superior concentrate grades and valuable metal recoveries. However, taking these results to industrial scale has proved difficult. This paper provides details of the protocol developed and used during a high-chrome grinding media plant trial. It describes the test regime employed to measure changes in pulp chemistry as well as concentrate grades and recoveries to produce a statistically meaningful result. The work also highlighted the need for close cooperation between the metallurgists on site and the researchers conducting the trial. To demonstrate the protocol, data gathered during a plant trail in a PGM concentrate will be presented describing the changes in pulp chemistry and metallurgical response observed.

Attachment of collectors containing thioamide groups to sulfide minerals is interpreted as interaction between NH-acids and sulfides acting as solid bases with the formation of a donor–acceptor reagent–mineral bond. As the acid function of the reagents increases, their sorption optimum is observed to shift to a less alkaline region. The developed concept has enabled us to propose a method for calculating optimal pH values for the sorption of reagents on mineral surfaces depending on the acidity of the reagents and the pH value of the medium. Our estimates correlate well with the experimental data. We studied the spectra of the reagents containing thioamide groups and the spectra of copper salts and their surface compounds on an oxidised copper film, chalcopyrite, and pyrite using the infrared (IR) spectroscopy. Some effective applications are described of reagents containing thioamide groups in the flotation of copper, copper-molybdenum, and gold ores, both separately and in combination with other collectors. It is shown that the flotation performance is maximised by adding two- and three-component collector combinations, including collectors containing thioamide groups. In this case, the increase in the recovery of copper, molybdenum, and gold is up to 2-5% compared to conventional process conditions. A new, high-performing reagent containing a thioamide group is proposed. A commercial pilot batch of the reagent was produced and sent for flotation tests in gold ore applications. "The objective of any mining company is to sustainably maximize the net present value (NPV) throughout the life-of-mine (LOM). The expected NPV over the LOM is calculated based on a mine plan, yet the actual value realized by the mining company depends greatly on the level of intertemporal execution against the mine plan. Consequently, a major key performance indicator (KPI) that is often overlooked in open pit mining, due to a greater focus on temporal KPIs, is the degree of spatial compliance to the mine plan. Such focus sometimes leads to short-term actions being detrimental to long-term plans. In this paper we describe the development and implementation of a spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation approach for an open pit mine. Application to a case study open pit iron ore mine in South Africa indicated a significant improvement in the spatial mine-to-plan compliance, from 69% to 94% over a three-year period from 2014 to 2016. These results indicate that implementation of the proposed spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation approach can contribute positively to improving the level of spatial execution and assists in improving the alignment between short-term, medium-term, and LOM plans.IntroductionThe objective of any mining company is to maximize the net present value (NPV) throughout the life of mine (LOM). Investing in a mining venture can be risky and stakeholders need transparent, unbiased reports to understand the Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves a mining company holds. Readability and textual choice can be used consciously to manipulate perceptions, or it can be done unconsciously. This exploratory study investigates the readability and textual choice of supplementary Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Reports of companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. The results indicate that narrative manipulation occurs in these reports through word choices that make the reports difficult to read, as well as specific narrative selections. This reduces the informational value of the reports. The results of the study will be useful to various stakeholders, such as mining company management, investors, investment specialists, financial analysts, and even employees and the general community, who all use these reports to make important decisions. It is also useful for the preparers of the Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Reports, Competent Persons, and other technical specialists to be aware of readability and that certain textual choices can affect the interpretation of these reports. It is recommended that bodies such as the JSE and the SAMREC and SAMVAL Code committees consider adding a plain language requirement to regulations, guidelines, and codes to ensure transparent, unbiased, and objective reports.

Hydrocyclones are the most commonly used classifiers in the mining industry. The reason for this is their low operating cost and a small footprint. Data from plant trials where screens replaced hydrocyclones indicated that lower bypass of fines and sharper separation could improve breakage rates, with a positive effect on flotation circuit performance throughput. Despite the importance of classification, hydrocyclones have not received as much attention as more expensive comminution units, and their technological progress has been incremental. Noticeable water split (Rf) reductions of a semi-inverted hydrocyclone have been reported in the past. According to theory, the hydrocyclone with reduced Rf will improve classification of fines. A classification study using semi-inverted hydrocyclones was conducted to determine if a hydrocyclone could be operated in a way that would minimise misclassified fines. The classification performance of a semi-inverted hydrocyclone will be presented in this paper and other potential applications will be discussed. Compositing or regularization of drillhole data is common practice in mineral resource estimation and is deemed a necessary step in producing unbiased estimates of mineral resources and reserves. Commonly, data are collected over irregular distances due to the varying relative thicknesses of lithologies drilled or sampling/assaying strategies. This necessitates data transformation to regular lengths of equal size to ensure that all data have the same sample support. However, there have been few detailed publications on the effect of this process on the composited data that are subsequently taken forward for the estimation process. In this paper, three currently available compositing methods are reviewed and the effects of inappropriate compositing methodologies presented. It is shown through a case study that compositing samples to different lengths leads to changes in the average and variance of the grades in the drillcores in the dataset, which will impact the final estimated value. These differences are exacerbated by breaks or gaps in data where, for a variety of reasons, there has been no data collection or data have been lost. The importance of appropriately treating blank and zero data is also presented. Globally, these differences might be minimal, but locally may be substantial, affecting the efficiency of the estimation and subsequent use of the results in, for example, mine planning and reconciliation. Further detailed investigation of compositing practices is required if the full implications of compositing are to be understood and any induced bias effectively defined.

Bubbles play a vital role in flotation, and their properties directly affect the flotation performance. Xanthates are one of the major collectors used in sulphide mineral flotation. It is often believed that their main function is to render the desired mineral surface hydrophobic, which is essential for the mineral particles to attach to air bubbles. This paper takes a systematic approach to assess the influence of potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) at the air–liquid phase and its interaction with the frother in the concentration of range 10–5×104 ppm. Bubble size was measured in a laboratory flotation cell using a photographic technique and the stability of bubbles was quantified in terms of coalescence time -, the time required for a bubble pair produced at adjacent capillaries to merge into a single bubble. Bubble size reduction of up to 26% was observed with increasing PAX concentration in the cell. The bubble coalescence experiments using PAX only showed that the bubbles coalesced quickly at lower concentrations (10–50 ppm), but they stayed extremely stable at higher concentrations (1×102–1×104 ppm). Further experiments were carried out where the concentration of PAX was fixed at 1 ppm and 4- Methyl-2-pentanol (MIBC) concentration was varied. The synergetic action of PAX and MIBC significantly improved the stability of bubbles in the mixed system, and is even compatible with a stronger frother. The results strongly suggest that the role of PAX at the air–liquid phase should be considered in the practice of sulphide flotation. Keywords: Bubble size, bubble coalescence, PAX, bubble stability

Boring of tunnels and shafts in hard rock under high stress conditions is becoming more common as mines and tunnels are developed at greater depths. Under the high stress conditions, fracturing of the often-brittle rock occurs in the walls, backs, and ahead of advancing faces of excavations. Fracturing can have a significant impact on boring activities: sidewall spalling, which affects machine gripper capacity, and fractures can also develop in the rock ahead of the face, leading to blocky rock conditions, which may have a significant effect on machine excavation. Fracturing may develop dynamically, leading to rock bursts manifesting in the form of strain bursts, which can be hazardous and destructive. In brittle rock, fracturing is commonly extensional in nature. The focus of this paper is on fracturing in the face of the excavation. Examples of such fracturing behaviour are described briefly in the paper. Numerical analyses were carried out to predict the initiation of extension fractures and their orientations ahead of excavation surfaces, and the resulting formation of rock slabs/plates, and the stability of these plates. The results should be beneficial for the evaluation of the conditions prior to, and during boring operations.

Some 24 papers will be presented by metallurgists from many important companies around the world. VISIT TO THE COUNCIL FOR SCIENTIFIC AND INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH On 23rd June, 1970, members of the Institute visited the C.S.I.R. in Pretoria. More members had booked for this tour but the current flu epidemic caused cancellations which was unfortunate. The visit was organised with military precision, which prevented detailed discussion of any particular subject, but provided a bird's eye view of a large number of interesting projects. The visit was packed with interest for all and those requiring further information were invited to contact the relevant divisions afterwards. Or Denkhaus welcomed the delegates and stressed the importance of integrating research efforts with industry's requirements. An excellent colour and sound film was shown which depicted the work of the Rock Mechanics division. This showed very clearly methods used for preparing rock samples and demonstrated the machines and instruments for the various tests. It made one realise the extent to which this research has been integrated with the actual mining situation. The fullscale experiments underground showed the failure of pillars under applied loads and were very interesting. This is undoubtedly a film which all mining people should see. After the film the rock mechanics laboratories were visited where the actual machines were seen and described. We then visited the metal and strength mechanics sections where the metallurgists were able to see some interesting experiments and tests. We also visited the Aeronautics Research group where a large 1 000 hp wind tunnel was inspected. We were told enough about this to realise something of the complexities involved in the design and operation of a closed circuit tunnel of this type. The tunnel is used for tests on models which are necessary for the design and modification of aircraft. After a very excellent lunch at the C.S.I.R. recreation centre, the delegates attended two lectures-one by Mr. Mandersloot of the Chemical Engineering group, who outlined the varied functions of this group and told us something of their work. Of particular interest was the research into the suitability of various South African manganese ores for dry cell batteries. Work on the thickener settlement studies interested the metallurgists. The second lecture was given by Mr Donaldson of the National Building Research Institute. This Institute has about ten divisions each of which covers a particular aspect of building research. The work of the soil mechanics division was described in detail and illustrated by coloured slides. This was particularly interesting and demonstrated clearly how building failures result from lack of attention to detail of construction where unstable soil conditions exist. Cracks in walls of compound blocks brought the subject home forcibly to the mining delegates. This division has also caried out important work on sinkholes and sUmes dams and produced some positive results. Altogether the visit was most interesting and enjoyable. It was made more worthwhile because the emphasis was on the work being carried out and not on just seeing the laboratories. The Institute is greatly indebted to the C.S.I.R. and its staff for the very excellent arrangements made.

Poor phase separation and fine dissemination of the desired components within congruous slag phases are key challenges limiting the recoverability of values from slags by conventional beneficiation methods. Slag microstructure conditioning is a pragmatic approach to increasing themvalue-in-use of discard slags, especially when integrated with the broader smelter infrastructure. Although not yet tested on oxide slag systems, this paper explores the potential application of magnetohydrodynamic principles to the crystallization behaviour of bulk slags. Integrating the slag microstructure conditioning infrastructure to the existing smelter infrastructure is key to unlocking the economic value of slags because it is most economic to condition the properties of molten slag directly after tapping. A new business model that integrates smelting units to transversalmeconomic activities, such as cement production and suppliers of construction aggregates, canmsignificantly increase the circularity of metallurgical slags.

Pt-based alloys for high-temperature applications in aggressive environments have been under development for over 10 years, and are targeted to be used as either as bulk, or as coatings. The alloys comprise Pt, Al, Cr, and Ru, and the microstructure has been improved by composition to a best possible analogue of the nickel-based superalloys, which these alloys could partially replace. This was necessary because the previous best alloy had a strengthening precipitate volume proportion of only approximately 40 vol.%, whereas the nickel-based superalloys have around 70 per cent, and a lower volume would mean that the strength would not be the best that could be obtained. The microstructures were assessed using electron microscopy, and have been related to the alloys? hardness values. The current microstructures are much more like those of NBSAs, with a high proportion of the strengthening ~Pt3Al precipitates. Since the samples have to be small (platinum is expensive), hardness has been used as an indication of strength. Nano-indentation studies showed that the hardness and Young?s modulus were higher for ~Pt3Al than the (Pt) matrix. More extensive oxidation studies have been undertaken on the previous optimum sample, and the effect of cooling rate after heat treatment has also been ascertained. In addition, the samples were studied after different heat treatment times, and cross-sections were made in order to characterize the alumina scale that formed. The oxide scales of Pt-11Al-3Cr-2Ru (at.%) up to 100 h exposure did not spall, and were at least as good as those of the ternary alloys. There was no discernable Al depletion zone in the substrate, although it could have been at a greater depth than thickness of the samples studied. Further additions to the Pt-Al-Cr-Ru alloys have been studied, to increase the melting temperature as well as to reduce the platinum content without compromising the properties. Reduced platinum content would have the benefits of reduced density and cost. The target elements include vanadium and niobium, of which vanadium is of special interest, since it is a South African product. Before these additions could be made, phase equilibria studies were undertaken so that the maximum addition could be ascertained, and also to check any possible ternary phases, which could be deleterious. Work on the Pt-Al-V system revealed a ternary phase, ~V27Pt54Al19 (at.%), which has a eutectic reaction with (Pt). The maximum V addition is likely to be around 15 at.%, otherwise ~Pt3V or the ternary phase will form, and not the required (Pt)/~Pt3Al phases.

Manganese ores are the major source of manganese for the production of manganese ferroalloys. There is a gap in the knowledge of the decrepitation behaviour of manganese ores, which presents a problem in the operation of smelters. Decrepitation, which is the breakage of the ore particles upon heating, is an important quality parameter for these ores. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the extent to which South African manganese ores decrepitate during preheating in a rotary kiln. The effects of temperature, rotational speed, and particle size decrepitation were investigated. Manganese ores were heated in a laboratory-scale rotary kiln at temperatures of 600, 800, and 1000°C, and rotational speeds of 3, 6, and 12 r/min. The size ranges were +6-20, +20-40, and +40-75 mm and the residence time was constant at 30 minutes. The decrepitation index (DI) is quantified as the ratio of the mass of <6 mm particles after pre-heating to the total mass of the sample. It was found that the DIs for all ores used were proportional to the temperature and the rotational speed and inversely proportional to the particle size range with temperature being the most important parameter. Ore A was the most susceptible to decrepitation followed by ore C and ore B; this was mainly to the decomposition of kutnohorite, the content of which was the highest in ore A and the lowest in ore B.

In response to the enormous amounts of coal discard generated during coal mining and preparation, the development of an efficient and sustainable strategic use of this resource is essential. Furthermore, the rising urban population over the next decades is confronted with the depletion of quality raw materials for building components. To this end, this study reports new information on the morphology, water absorption, and flexural strength properties of ceramic composites produced from three different coal discards and polysiloxane pre-ceramic polymer (PCP) resin. In addition, test results relating to the continuous operating temperature, chemical resistance, and efflorescence potential of the composites are presented. The results show that the water absorption and flexural strength of the coal composites, up to 1.94% and 36.46 MPa respectively, exceed the requirements for ceramic and clay roof tiles. The continuous operating temperature of composites is found to be more thermally stable than conventional roofing tiles (concrete and ceramic) between ambient temperature and 600°C. In addition, the excellent chemical resistance of the composites (94.43%−99.98%) compared to conventional roofing tiles (67.82%−99.97%) eliminates the need for additional external coatings. The interesting results documented so far suggest that this technique could be used to produce low-temperature application building products such as bricks, panels, roofing tiles, etc. This new recycling technique offers an excellent opportunity to eliminate enormous volumes of coal discard and to advance the circular economy in the coal industry.

The diamond industry is no newcomer to High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) as it has used the technology for more than 20 years, predominantly in secondary crushing and recrushing roles. In fact it could be argued that the diamond industry has led the way for the wider minerals industry to consider its application. In existing conventional secondary cone crushing applications, large valuable diamonds are" won" through meticulously managing the recovery process within defined particle size ranges. Conventional crushers operate with relatively large closed side settings, but have the potential to damage diamonds by making direct contact with the sides of the crusher. Cone crushers also result in steep product size distributions that run a high risk of losing many of the smaller, unliberated but more abundant diamonds from the rock. This current comminution paradigm of particle size reduction management results in recrushing processing applications or plants where HPGRs are often used.

"Investment in diamond exploration has been declining over the past decade, in spite of positive long-term industry fundamentals and a growing interest in diamonds as an investment category. The lack of new significant discoveries in recent years has eroded investor confidence, yet no new discoveries are possible without investment in exploration. Junior ‘mine finders’ have been the hardest hit. Their agility, tenacity, and appetite for risk are not sufficient to attract the funding required, even at the greenfield stage. Developing new discoveries into mineral resources can be crippling without solid financial support. Junior incubators could play a crucial role, especially at the project evaluation stage – but where are they? Alternatives to traditional funding mechanisms have become available, many still untested in the junior diamond exploration space. Valuable lessons can be drawn from the past and used to inform emerging new strategies. IntroductionDiamonds are the ultimate expression of love. Their ancient and timeless allure continues to influence consumer emotions and behaviours across continents, cultures and age groups. Analysts are predicting a sustained supplydemand shortfall in the years ahead which will trend diamond prices generally upwards. With positive long-term industry fundamentals, one cannot help but wonder why funding for diamond exploration and development projects is so scarce.Investment in exploration across commodities – including diamonds – has been declining for a number of years, reaching a historic eleven-year low early in 2017. The lack of major diamond discoveries in recent years has done little to strengthen the case for investing in diamond projects, yet no new discoveries can be made without investment in exploration.Global estimates of known carats in the ground stand currently at 2.5 billion carats, which equates to around 18 years of production at current levels of 140 million carats (mct) per annum. Sustainable replenishment of depleting diamond resources is possible only through the development of new discoveries. As a result of the depletion of high-grade manganese reserves, it has become necessary to consider the exploitation of low-grade manganese ores. The main problem of low-grade manganese ore is the low Mn/Fe ratio, which makes it unfit for the production of manganese ferroalloys. In this work, a selective reduction technique was used for smelting low-manganese ore in the presence of coke and fluxing material in an electric submerged arc furnace to obtain a rich manganese slag and low-manganese pig iron. The product slag was blended with medium-manganese ore and smelted in an electric submerged arc furnace, in the presence of coke and the fluxing agent, to produce silicomanganese alloy. The influence of reducing agent ratio, charge basicity, and charge Mn/Si ratio on the smelting process was investigated. The optimum conditions were found to be a coke ratio of, 1.35, Mn/Si ratio of 2.0, and charge basicity of 2.5. The silicomanganese alloy produced under these conditions satisfies the specifications for Si16Mn63 and Si17Mn65. The experimental results were applied on a pilot scale, producing a silicomanganese alloy with a chemical composition close to that of the standard specifications.
