This publication comprises tables listing friction loss for a flexible, spiral-reinforced circular ventilation tubing system. The tables were constructed with the following parameters: a friction factor of 62 X 10-10, 10-foot sections of tubing ranging in total length from 100 to 550 feet, air quantities ranging from 1,000 to 15,000 cfm, and one to four 90° bends in the tubing. The aim of this publication is to improve ventilation tubing analysis and to provide a method of proper fan selection.

"Research has been conducted during the past year on a study to correlate respirable coal mine dust characteristics with worker positions and coal seams. The first characteristic of respirable coal mine dust which has been addressed in the correlation study is respirable dust mass concentration. In fulfillment of this objective, two mines operating in different coal seams have been selected for respirable dust mass sampling on both longwall panels and continuous mining sections. At present, sampling has been completed on the longwall panel operating in the first mine, and one half of the planned sampling has been accomplished on the continuous mining section.The first mine sampled is operating in the Pittsburgh coal seam. The average mining height is approximately 78"" with an average of 8"" of bottom shale being mined. The mine is primarily a longwall mine, and continuous mining machines are used to support the longwall.Figure 1 shows the layout of the longwall panel which was sampled. Intake air is coursed via the track heading up to the headgate area. The air splits at the headgate. Approximately 20,000-30,000 cubic feet of air per minute (CFM) is used to ventilate the longwall face and about 5,000-10,000 CFM is routed down the belt entry. Substantial leakage across the gob was noted during the sampling period. An average of 1800 CFM per 100 feet of face leaked through the shields into the gob from #1 shield to #112 shield. A substantial amount of leakage also occurred between the #1 shield and the solid rib of the headgate development panel. The path of the air used to ventilate the panel is shown with arrows in Figure 1. Direction of air flow was opposite to the coal moving direction on the armored face conveyor.A double-drum ranging shearer is used on the face to cut a 30-inch web of coal. Normal practice is to cut from the tailgate to headgate with the leading drum raised and the tail drum lowered for cutting bottom. After reaching the headgate, the shearer is reversed and both drums are lowered for a clean-up pass. The last 40 feet of face on the tailgate is cut on the clean-up pass.The shearer is equipped with 2 banks of 4 water sprays each and 2 large sprays on the headgate end and 1 bank of 4 sprays on the tailgate end. Additionally, sprays are located above bits on the cutting drums. Actual cutting speed was approximately 14-18 feet per minute, depending on conditions.The cross sectional area for air flow on the face was approximately 60 square feet before a pass was mined and 80 square feet after a pass was mined but before the shields were advanced. The cross sectional area at the shearer was about 35 square feet.The condition of both the tailgate and headgate of the panel was good with no signs of significant roof problems. The roof conditions along the face during the sampling period were variable. At times, as much as 3 feet of drawslate fell from the roof for a span of as much as 40 shields. Generally, however, relatively local areas of falling roof were encoun-tered, usually limited to a 10-20 shield span when appearing.Ten days were spent gathering respirable dust samples on the longwall panel. Mine Safety Appliance (MSA) sampling units equipped with 10-mm nylon cyclones, pre-weighed MSA PVC filters, and constant-flow DuPont pumps were used to obtain thesamples. The pumps were calibrated at a 2 liters-per-minute flow rate. The 10-mm cyclone was selected for classifying total dust into the desired respirable fraction in order to obtain ""legally defined"" respirable dust samples for detailed physical characterization."

"The Keely mine at Dagger, Indiana, is one of the few mines that is being operated successfully on a cooperative basis. This shaft mine is developing 133 acres of coal in the Indiana No. 6 bed, which here averages 5-1/2 feet thick and. lies about 110 feet below the surface. Thirty seven (37) miners and twenty (20) company men or day man are employed, and the daily output is around 300 tons. Practically the entire production is sold by contract for railroad use. No mining machines are used and all coal is produced by pick work.The mine was originally owned and operated by the Stockton Coal. Co. of Dugger, but about eight years ago it was leased to Mr. Roy Price. He sub-leased the property to ten miners, who formed an association known as the Dugger Mutual Coal and Mining Co., to work the mine cooperatively.At first many difficulties were encountered; the cooperative idea is an old one, but the practice was new to those interested. Some of the men were energetic, ambitious workers; others were inclined to let their associates produce the coal but wanted to share in the profits. In time, after a hard struggle and many changes in the personnel of the company, business-like methods were adopted and the mine was put on a paying basis."

Provide a more efficient method of cooling hot working environments in deep mines than is possible with single stage spray coolers or cooling coil heat exchangers. Approach Pass warm mine air through several stages of horizontally oriented water sprays fed by the chilled water supply of the mine. How It Works This concept extends the capabilities and potential applications of the coolers described in Technology News nos. 71 and 93. In this multi-stage design, hot ventilation air is cooled while passing through horizontal water sprays. Air enters the cooler through a diffuser section which slows the airflow and distributes it evenly across the cooler with a minimum of pressure drop. This ensures uniform exposure of the warm air to the cool water and consequent high thermal efficiencies. In the three-stage cooler shown, cold mine service water is sprayed from the first water stage manifold on the downwind end of the cooler. Slightly warmed water from this spray stage is collected in a sump, pumped and then resprayed through the second stage manifold. The process is repeated again for the third-stage. An overall counterflow heat exchange effect is thus achieved by exposing the hottest incoming air to the warmer, third-stage water spray first and to the coldest, first-stage water spray last. Wave plate eliminators can be employed between stages of water sprays to increase thermal efficiency or at the outlet to minimize the water discharged into the mine ventilation air. I do not regard the criticism by Rankin of my work as valid or even meaningful. I strongly reject the assertion by Rankin that my results are invalid. As stated in my paper, the equation to solve (in e. m.u. ) is: [ ] where n2 =4 ps? . This may be rewritten as three scalar equations in Cartesian coordinates, one of which is [ ] The equation to be solved is the diffusion equation, and it is not appropriate to consider waves in this context. In the method a point-wise solution to the problem is approximated. As discussed in my paper the approach taken at discontinuities in conductivity is to choose the normal component of [E] at the discontinuity as the average of the normal components on either side of the discontinuity. This is similar to the well-known assumption made in obtaining Fourier series representations for piecewise continuous functions (Pipes, 1958; p. 51). In the geophysical problem this means that the discontinuity is approximated by a transition zone, which is a very good approximation for such cases. By using this approach, both the values of the function and its derivatives give a good estimate for those associated with the physical situation. It is not apparent and Rankin has not shown that "all the field components and the derivatives are grossly distorted in the region about the boundary" for geophysically realistic situations. He has given no evidence to support his assertation that the results are "invalid". Although Rankin declares that one cannot calculate the electric components from the magnetic, in his discussion he has not stated why this is so. After once calculating the magnetic components the electric components may be calculated, but one must insure that the initial solution is accurate enough to prevent significant round-off errors.

"Coal mine dust research throughout the world has been stimulated by the recognition of its importance in the development of coal miners' diseases, particularly coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP). A historical look at the problem and the present state of knowledge in this area of importance to the worldwide coal industry is presented. A summary of progress made in this area is provided and some research ideas for the future are discussed.1. INTRODUCTIONI thank Dr. Yong Won John, President of the Korean Institute of Mineral and Mining Engineers, for his invitation to address the International Symposium on Coal Mining and Safety. This presents me with an interesting opportunity to take a broad look at the research in coal mine dust and where we are going. From this broad perspective, we can all view the progress and problems that are apparent in the present state of knowledge of coal mine dust. One important element in the review of coal mine dust research and its role in miners' diseases is that of its history. The existence of diseases attributed to the mine atmosphere is often traced back to Pliny the younger in the first century A.D. His work on natural history mentioned observed human effects attributed to mine fumes and vapors. However, the subject of the effects of dust in the mine was not mentioned in published literature until 1556 when Agricola discussed the ailments of miners in his day (Seaton 1975).For many centuries, many medical ailments of the lungs were often categorized together and distinct diseases were often not recognized until more modern times. The ability to distinguish different lung diseases was limited until the discovery of X-rays in 1986. Nonetheless, Zenker in 1866 applied the term pneumonokoniosis to any disease where dust gathers in the lymphatic depots of the lungs. This term was changed to pneumoconiosis in 1932. While pneumoconiosis was defined in the 1800s, scant attention was paid to control of miners' diseases until recent decades. The first attempt to control disease through control of the mine atmosphere has been attributed to the South Africans who instituted a silica control in 1910 (Drinker and Hatch 1954)."

To clean coal mine air by developing a low-cost scrubber suitable for belt transfer and similar applications. Approach Design a scrubber operated by water only, with no moving parts. Use conventional water spray nozzles located within a duct to both move and clean the air. Use a droplet eliminator to get the water droplets and mist back out of the airstream. How It Works Conventional scrubbers require a mechanical fan driven by either an electric or a hydraulic motor. They also require water sprays and some type of scrubbing mechanism. The water powered scrubber, however, offers higher reliability over conventional scrubbers since it utilizes the water sprays to both move the air and scrub the particulate from the air. Conventional water spray nozzles are placed near one end of a rectangular duct open at both ends. The sprays are directed towards the far end of the duct where a stationary wave blade water droplet eliminator is located. Movement of the water spray droplets coming from the nozzles generates (by momentum transfer) an air movement In the same direction as the sprays. The volume of air moved Is primarily a function of the duct cross-section size, water pressure and water

Design a high-production coal mining machine with inherent low dust generation and low frictional ignition potential. Approach Constant depth linear cutting (CDLC) provides a longterm solution to excessive dust generation from shearers and continuous mining machines through new design of the rotary drum culling system. Problems with rotary drum systems, which must be eliminated to control the dust generation at the source, include the effect of a con¬stantly varying depth of cut using fixed bit spacing, secondary fragmentation of already broken coal and, frictional heating of bits and entrainment of dust by fanning action due to high drum rotational speed, Each bit on a rotary drum enters the coal face at zero depth of cut, goes to some maximum depth at the horizontal centerline during sump, and exits at zero depth.

The mine ventilation system consists of the fan, the roadways, and the regulatory devices. Sufficient fresh air must reach each working face in the mines to render harmless noxious, toxic, and respirable pollutants and to provide for the breathing of men. This is achieved by the proper selection of fan and regulatory devices. Because a mining system is dynamic, the mine ventilation system must also be dynamic. In short, mine ventilation engineers are frequently called upon to provide answers to the following questions: 1. Given a mine or the projected plan of a mine, what fan must be selected for the quantities specified in the section? At what point in its characteristic must it be operated? Are any speed changes or changes in blade settings warranted? 2. What should be the regulation in a section to insure cer¬tain desired quantity in that section? How does it affect the overall ventilation system? 3. What are the effects of driving a new shaft? Where should it be located? What size fan should be installed in the shaft? How does this affect the overall ventilation sys¬tem? 4. How much quantity increases can be obtained by cleaning up falls and streamlining roadways and by driving addi¬tional parallel airways? These questions are in no way exhaustive, nor are answers easy. Most of the operational and planning problems discussed above are to a cer¬tain extent solved by ventilation engineers using rules of thumb from experience. Both natural conditions and regulatory requirements have changed so drastically recently that use of scientific methods in ventilation planning and of faster methods in evaluating the plans is a must. There is outlined below the essential facts brought out in an investigation into the causes for emulsion difficulties as experienced at many water gas plants . The investigation was conducted under a cooperative agreement between the University of Illinois Engineering Experiment Station , the Illinois State Geological Survey , and the U. S. Bureau of Mines . Funds of the Illinois Gas Association were used to defray a part of the costs . Active assistance was rendered by the Peoples Gas Light and Coke Company , of Chicago , who furnished a laboratory at Chicago for conducting the experiments , and loaned the services of Mr. E. A. Thiele to help with the laboratory work . A full report on the results of this work will be published by the Bureau of Mines later but it is believed desirable to bring the principal results now to the attention of the industry . In almost every gas plant where carbureted water gas is made , some difficulty is experienced , at one time or another , in separating the tar fran the water that condenses from the gas . The fact that annoyance from this source is ever present in some plants , and seldom present in others , leads to the belief that certain operating variables have considerable to do with the formation of difficulty separable tarwater emulsions . Accordingly , when samples of tar were collected for laboratory study , the operating conditions and methods were simultaneously observed and recorded.

"During the coming winter, it is probable that many householders who have habitually been users of anthracite coal will be obliged to turn to some other fuel for heating purposes, because of the limited supply of anthracite. The next best fuel, from a standpoint of cleanliness and ease of operation, is coke, but here again the supply is inadequate and the householder will have to fall back on bituminous coal. Though bituminous coal has the dis¬advantage of being dirty to handle, requiring more care in firing, and of giving off considerable smoke, it will be more generally available, costs less, and in the better grades which will naturally find their way to the domestic market, is higher in heat value, and contains less ash than anthracite.Choice of CoalThere a variety of bituminous coals are available, the householder should choose a low volatile coal, such as New River, Pocahontas, or some other ""smokeless"" coal, or the British coal now being offered in the markets along the Atlantic seaboard. Though not necessary to have the coal sized, as is the case with anthracite, it will be found cleaner to use coal from which the fine dirt has been screened. If it is found that excessive dust is caused when firing the coal, this can be reduced by slightly wetting the coal at the front of the bin, as it is being used.Method of Firingusing bituminous coal instead of anthracite in the domestic furnace, it will be necessary to use an entirely different method of fir Instead of leveling the fuel bed and putting on fresh coal in an even layer over the entire fire box, the coked and partly burned coal remaining from the previous firing should be pushed as much as possible to one side of the box, and the fresh coal thrown into the empty side so as to leave some burning coal exposed. In this way the green coal is heated slowly, the volatile gases are given off gradually, and are ignited by the burninggoing to waste up the chimney unburned."

Louisiana's coal reserves, located in the north-western part of the state, consist entirely of lignite, with estimated recoverable reserves of about a billion tons. Although lignite deposits were discovered in the early 1800s, the first documented use of lignite occurred at the federal arsenal near Shreveport during the Civil War. By the late 1800s, lignite use was common by blacksmiths, railroads, and steamboats. Lignite production ceased, however, from the early 1900s until 1985. A new lignite mine permitted September 1, 1985, produced 0.2 million tons in its first year. The operation uses a seven-mile-long conveyor to transport lignite to the associated mine-mouth power plant. The surface coal mining reclamation and enforcement program in Louisiana was approved October 10,1980. Louisiana's Abandoned Mine Reclamation Plan was approved December 10, 1986

This is an audience, I know, that shares my interest in a subject that is currently getting a lot of attention -the tendency of our Nation to draw increasingly on overseas supplies of certain mineral commodities, and proportionately less on domestic sources for these minerals. That we do obtain substantial quantities of some essential minerals from abroad is easy to demonstrate. That we will continue to do so in the foreseeable future is not in doubt. Uncertainty begins, however, when we try to interpret the significance of these facts. As with many phenomena, their meaning is open to a variety of interpretations.

"The Generic Mineral Technology Center on Respirable Dust was established in August 1983, at the request of the Bureau of Mines, to conduct research that affords ""...each miner the opportunity to work underground during the period of (his/her) adult working life without incurring any disability from pneumoconiosis or any other occupational disease"". The Center consists of the Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institutes (MRI) of The Pennsylvania State University (PSU) and West Virginia University (WVU) in association with the MRIs of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Minnesota (UMN). (FIGURE 34) Michigan Technological University (MTU) is also affiliated with the Center in the area of diesel particulates.The Center brings together experts concerned with particles causing potentially disabling or fatal diseases including pneumoconiosis (""black-lung""), silicosis, and asbestosis. The latter is of deep concern not just to workers in the mineral sector of the economy but also to the general populace. The primary goal of the Center is to reduce the incidence and severity of respirable dust disease through advancing fundamental understanding of all aspects of respirable dust associated with mining and milling, and the interaction of dust and lungs. The research program of the Generic Mineral Technology Center explores these scientific, engineering or medical concerns with the objective of refining existing strategies and developing new respirable dust control techniquesand technology that are consistent with the fundamental dust-lung interaction processes that lead to mine worker disability. The work concentrates on five areas (FIGURE 35):"

Reduce exposure of longwall face workers to respirable dust generated during the advancement of roof supports. Approach Identify and implement current water-application and improved support-movement practices used to lower support-generated dust. Defining the Problem Bureau studies have shown that on some longwall faces support dust can contribute over 30 percent of the respirable dust exposure of face workers. Conditions contributing to high levels of respirable dust generation during support movement are: depth of cover greater than 1,000 ft; immediate roof consisting of coal top or friable shales; and face-air velocities in excess of 500 fpm. Moreover, at most longwalls, supports are advanced on the intake-air side of the shearer as it travels with the airflow. This places the shearer operators, and in many cases the support movers, downwind of support advance, thus increasing their respirable dust exposures.

Light that you "see" is really radiant energy that hits the retina of the eye. Radiant energy moves out from a light source much like a series of bullets from a number of machine guns being fired at the same time in all directions.

The settlers of a new country necessarily suffer at first from the lack of accumulated stocks of metals - in-use that are possessed in older countries . Our American colonists were at first compelled to import their metals in manufactured forms , and it must have proved difficult to produce an exportable surplus of commodities with which to pay for them . These circumstances stimulated a search for domestic ore deposits . Various discoveries resulted , so that as early as 1628 , we find the colonists importing two craftsmen from England to establish iron -works in Massachusetts to beneficiate local ores . In 1648 , an iron -works at Lynn was producing metal at an annual rate of 400 tons . Later on , the colonial iron industries became of importance , some metal being actually exported to England . The people of this country thus early became convinced of the necessity for domestic mineral production . It is now little realized how persistent were their efforts to - make mineral discoveries , before the gold- rush to California ; the extraordinary success of our subsequent mineral explorations has overshadowed the earlier record . Precise and complete accounting of our mineral production , having the character of national bookkeeping , is available only for the series of years beginning with 1880 , when commences the official record that is provided by the Government publication called Mineral Resources of the United States . In the period of 52 years , from 1880 through 1932 , the value of mineral production of the United States amounted to more than 122 billion dollars . Only 12 billions of this total were produced in the 21 years , 1880-1900 , while nearly 110 billions were produced in the first 31 years of the present century . Of this 110 billions , over 53 billions were produced in the most recent decade , 1921- 1930 , the production of the previous decade , 1911-1920 , having been only 37 billions , though it included the war period ; that of the decade 1901-1910 was 16 billions . In 1931 , the total value of mineral products of the United States was $ 3,180,000,000 , compared with an average annual value of $ 5,556,000,000 during the previous five - year period , 1926-1930 . The decline in 1931 from that average was therefore 43 per cent . As to the three great groups of mineral commodities , metals fared worst , with a decline of 55 per cent in the value of their production , while the value of fuels declined 39 per cent , as did that of the nonmetals group .

Investigations have shown interesting relationships between primary-tar and light-oil yields and chemical analyses of coals. These studies have been based largely upon results published by the Bureau of Mines in connection with its survey of the gas-, coke-, and byproduct-making properties of American coals. This paper gives the results of a similar correlation in which the range in rank and type has been extended to include nearly all classes of coal, the object being to determine relationships that are significant in predicting tar and light-oil yields from chemical analyses of coals. The yields of primary tar and light oil are important in two fields of coal utilization, namely, combustion and carbonization. It is generally recognized that the principal cause of smoke produced upon burning coal is incomplete combustion of tar and light-oil vapor released during burning. The greater the tar and light-oil yields of a coal, the greater is its potential smoke-producing property. During the present war, development of new sources of fuel oil has been emphasized, especially where the supply of petroleum products is limited. One possible source of a substitute fuel is the tar and light oil that can be obtained by low-temperature carbonization of coal. In both England and Germany large quantities of low-temperature tar and oil are being processed as a source of liquid fuels. It is obvious that primary-tar and light-oil yields are of paramount importance in the selection of coals for such use.

INTRODUCTION It's a pleasure to be with you and to share in this opening session for the 27th Annual Institute on Mining Health, Safety, and Research. As we come together today, I would like to reflect for just a moment on the past Institutes. Much of the progress in Mine Health and Safety has been the subject of presentations and discussions at the previous Institutes, either by identifying the issues, proposing techniques to overcome the problems, or presenting new findings to address important issues for the mining industry. May I extend our thanks and congratulations to VPI and to the planners and organizers of all of these Institutes for their important contributions to our mutual goals of improving mine health and safety. In the time available today, I would like to accomplish two objectives: 1. Provide my assessment of the current status of the Mining Health and Safety Research Program; and 2. Share with you the continuing need and direction for the Mining Health and Safety Research. MINE HEALTH AND SAFETY RESEARCH TODAY Mine Health and Safety Research was conducted formerly at four geographical locations within the USBM, specifically: Pittsburgh, Spokane, Twin Cities, and Denver. Although the Twin Cities and Denver Centers were closed, we have been successful in relocatingfmaintaining much of the core competencies to conduct a responsive, multidisciplinary Mine Health and Safety Research Program. The current staff at Pittsburgh and Spokane directed toward Health and Safety Research totals 397. This includes Lake Lynn Laboratory, about 60 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, where large-scale mine fire and explosion research is conducted. With the closures and transition we have worked to maintain the core competencies necessary to address Health and Safety issues. In some cases we have made arrangements to provide the requisite core competencies through external organizations. An example is the reassignment of the diesel particulate instrumentation capability from Twin Cities to Pittsburgh. In the case of diesel emission control, due to the cost of relocating laboratories and the lack of the appropriate skills at Pittsburgh or Spokane, the emission control laboratory is now being operated in Minneapolis through a contractual arrangement with the University of Minnesota.

"INTRODUCTION A soluble mediator has been described which is released from activated rabbit leukocytes and induces histamine secretion from rabbit platelets (Barbaro and Zvaifler, 1966; Siraganian and Osler, 1971). This factor has been isolated, characterized and named platelet activating factor, PAF (Bcnveniste et. al., 1972). PAF has since been chemically identified as l-0-alkyl-2-acetyl-sn-glyceryl-3-phosphocholine (Benveniste et. al., 1979; Demopoulous et. al., 1979).PAF is a lipid mediator of broad biological activity. It causes smooth muscle contraction, contraction of lung tissue and decreased FEV 1; while enhancing capillary permeability thus causing edema (Pinkard, 1983). In addition, PAF is a chemoattractant and can lead to inflammation.PAF has been reported to stimulate the release of lysosomal enzymes, leukotriene B,, and lipid metabolites from neutrophils (Smith et. al., 1983; Shaw et. al., 1981; Lin et. al., 1982; O'Flaherty et. al., 1984). The objective of the present investigation was to further characterize PAP-induced stimulation of granulocytes and to develop a bioassay, i.e. chemiluminescence, for screening PAF receptor antagonists and inhibitors of PAP-induced activation of granulocytes. The possible use of the chemiluminescence assay to monitor PAF synthesis by human granulocytes is also described.METHODSBlood was drawn from healthy volunteers into a blood storage bag containing CPD anticoagulant. Granulocytes were partially purified by dextran sedimentation and further purified by centrifugal elutriation as described previously (Jones et. al., 1980). Granulocytes obtained by this procedure were approximately 95 percent pure. The number of granulocytes in this preparation was determined using an electronic cell counter (Coulter Model Z1, Coulter Instrument Co., Hialeah, FL). Isolated granulocytes were used to monitor membrane potential, hydrogen peroxide and superoxide release, oxygen consumption, calcium uptake and, in some cases, chemiluminescence. Studies of PAF receptor antagonists were conducted using neutrophils isolated by density centrifugation.
