A laboratory investigation was conducted to determine the applicability of the thermal oil-recovery method as a means of increasing ultimate oil recovery in the Appalachian region. The primary objective was to establish self-sustained combustion in consolidated and unconsolidated sand test assemblies saturated with various amounts of Pennsylvania Grade crude oil and synthetic brine. Tests using blocks of sandstone were unsuccessful because of sealing problems and fracturing of the rock due to thermal stresses. A combustion wave of about 700° F was propagated through the sand-oil-water packs in the linear tube tests. The high air flux used resulted in high oil consumption and rapid movement of the combustion wave through the tubes. Analytical tests on the sand pack showed that sufficient fuel was deposited during the linear tube experiments for a self-sustained combustion wave.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, has developed a novel method of flocculation dewatering of phosphatic clay wastes using polyethylene oxide as the flocculant. Research was conducted to determine whether ethylene oxide gas was present in the air in the vicinity of disposed waste materials which had been flocculated with polyethylene oxide. Samples of clay waste materials containing polyethylene oxide were prepared in stoppered glass bottles in simulated disposal environments. Gaseous samples, removed over a 75-day period using an airtight syringe, were injected into a gas chromatograph that was capable of separating ethylene oxide from air. The presence of ethylene oxide gas was not detected in any sample. To determine possible degradation products of polyethylene oxide, the properties and reactions of ethylene oxide and its polymers were reviewed. Based upon the literature survey and experimental study, it was concluded that adverse environmental effects were not likely to result from the use of polyethylene oxide for flocculating phosphatic clay waste products.

As a basis for recommendation and for instruction of bureau engineers the considered opinion of the bureau is expressed in "decisions" of its Mine Safety Board, approved by the Director. Ten of these decisions were discussed, in Information Circular 6091.3 Decision No. 11, approved by Scott Turner, Director, on February 28, 1929, is as follows: "In the interest of safety, the Bureau of Mines, Department of. Commerce, recommends that in coal mines, haulage and (or) hoisting be kept in intake air as far as possible." As in the case of previous mine-safety decisions, the subject matter covered by this decision has frequently come to the attention of the Bureau of Mines through the reports of its mining engineers on explosion disasters and in accident-hazard investigations.

This paper demonstrates that finite-element modeling can be used to predict in situ coal pillar strength, especially under non ideal conditions where interface friction and roof and floor deformation are the primary controlling factors. Despite their differences in approach, empirical, analytical, and numerical pillar design methods have apparently converged on fundamentally similar concepts of coal pillar mechanics. The finite-element model results, however, are not intended to suggest a new pillar design criterion. Rather, they illustrate the site-specific and complex nature of coal pillar design and the value of using modeling procedures to account for such complex site-specific conditions. Because of the site-specific nature of coal pillar design, no single pillar design formula or model can apply in all instances. Understanding and accounting for the site-specific parameters are very important for successful coal pillar design. More work remains before the century-old problems related to pillar design are finally solved. Future research should focus on the cross-linkage of empirical, analytical, and numerical pillar design methods.

This study examines the accuracy of area sampling for measuring the dust exposure of mining machine operators in coal mines. The specific objective of this research was to find locations where an area sampler might work better than earlier studies have indicated. The results show that fixed-location area sampling cannot accurately predict the dust exposure of a machine operator, even when the best fixed location is sought, the fixed location is quite close to the operator and the bias due to the dust concentration gradient is corrected. Industrial hygienists have known for many years that area sampling is unsuitable for measuring air contaminant exposures in the workplace. Near contaminant sources, the dilution air and the contaminants are not evenly mixed. Therefore, when workers are near contaminant sources, exposure measurements must be taken from the worker's breathing zone to be accurate

Mining companies are usually held responsible for accidents occurring to the public around their operations . Safeguards are provided by progressive mining companies to prevent the public from getting into danger from wandering unattended about the properties . At abandoned operations , where little or no supervision can be maintained , persons are often injured through the negligence of the operator in leaving the property in unsafe condition . After a mine is abandoned or a lease is given up by a mining company , the responsibility for the safety of the property rests sometimes with the State to which the property ownership reverts or with the owner of the land ; either is usually quite unwilling to spend any money to remedy unsafe conditions due to the carelessness of the mining company . The land owner or the State , or both , should see that the work of leaving safe conditions behind is done by the operator before he abandons the mine or gives up the lease . Some of the worst hazards to the public at abandoned mines are from old test pits , abandoned shafts or tunnels , open pits , caved ground , and bodies of water in abandoned open pits . Hazards exist from some of these sources during the active operation of a mining property as well . In the early stages of mining operations test shafts are often sunk from 50 to 100 feet deep through the more or less loose material overlying bed rock . When these shafts are left unprotected , they are a serious danger for many years to come . In the course of time they become largely concealed by brush and grass , and thus are a deadfall to anyone who might happen to step into them . This condition will hold true for any part of the country, but to a much less degree where it is not necessary to sink through a great amount of cover . Many progressive operating companies have adopted the practice of filling in test pits after securing the information desired . Some nonresident landowners and exploration companies , however , have left such pits open , and it is extremely difficult for the mine inspector to get into communication with the owner . A method of determining the strength of a mine roof layer in place is described in this report. The method was tested on a limestone roof layer 50 feet wide, 100 feet long, and 20 inches thick. In place measurements were accomplished by introducing air under pressure into a separation between the layer and the overlying roof, and as pressure was increased, the corresponding strain and deflection of the roof layer were measured until the roof failed. The ultimate strength of the roof agreed with the tensile strength of the roof rock (modulus of rupture) as determined in the laboratory; the modulus of elasticity as measured in place did not agree with the laboratory-determined values; the deflection and tensile strain in the layer in place showed good agreement with the theory of a body-loaded beam clamped at both ends. This procedure for determining the strength of a mine-roof layer is safer and less costly than successively widening a roof to failure. For example, it would have been necessary to mine the room to a width of 114 feet and a length of 228 feet to produce failure in this roof layer. The method is not necessarily limited to limestone; any thinly bedded rock type can be tested by this procedure when there is an open parting over the mined area.

From 1870 to the end of 1929 the coal production of Utah has been some- what less than 110,000,000 tons. During this period at least three major disasters have occurred with fatalities totaling about 380, establishing a decidedly bad record of approximately 3.5 persons killed by major mine explo- sions per million tons of coal produced. Even during the period when there have been no disasters, such as the years 1914 to 1920, inclusive, the fatalities in ordinary working were about 5.4 per million tons produced, against 3.7 per million tons for the whole United States for the same years. The 5-year period following the World War, 1918 to 1922, inclusive, had 4.7 fatalities per million tons; hence, the fatality record in the coal mines of Utah has uniformly been in excess of the average of the coal mines of the entire country. Notwithstanding this poor record, Utah has given to the coal-mining world many excellent safety methods and practices, and Utah coal mines in general take greater measures toward safe mining than do the coal mines of any other State; if practices and methods allowed and pursued in coal mines of other States were tried in Utah coal mines, there would be a succession of disasters.

The Little Castle Creek chromite deposit was examined in February and May 1941, respectively, by W. O. Vandenburg and O. H. Metzger, engineers of the Bureau of Mines. The Federal Geological Survey started a magnetometer survey of the area in November 1940 and completed its work during April and May 1941. Field work by the Bureau of Mines was conducted during May and June 1941. The purpose of the Bureau of Mines investigation was to search for a continuation of the chromite mineralization. The property at one time was the largest chromite producer in California.

"Health standards in the U.S. are among the highest in the world. Achieving these standards have often had an impact on productivity, slowing output, and raising prices to levels that make it difficult to compete with many foreign industries. The answer to many of these problems lies in the development of new and advanced control techniques. This overview has identified some of the major respirable dust technological hurdles that have been overcome, and provided some insight into current and future approaches underway to remove these obstacles and to provide the United States with the most advanced state-of-the-art mining industry in the world from a respirable dust standpoint. The necessary developmental research is costly and time-consuming. The long-term, high-risk aspects of this effort are being addressed by the Bureau and the Generic Center on Respirable Dust, with support by industry. This should be recognized as one of the principal agents through which the great mineral potential of this Nation can be realized, and our international status as a mining power be assured without compromising the health and welfare of those who ensure it.The problem of more stringent dust standards will continue to grow. To date, approximately 40 pct of the coal mining industry has been placed on more stringent dust standards due to quartz. Control techniques must be improved if mandated levels are to be met. As longwall production increases, dust levels will also increase. In light of the industry trend toward longwall mining, if no new control technology is available, the Federal dust standard will act as a constraint on future output per hour. The Bureau has recently completed a survey of 18 coal preparation plants; 50 pct of these operate at dust levels which exceed 2.0 mg/m3; future work will be directed toward solutions in this area. The 2.0 mg standard for respirable dust is for dust particles which are below 10 pm in diameter. Recent studies have shown that dust in the range between 10 and 25 pm can cause obstructive airway disease. The Bureau is currently determining the extent of exposure to dust in this size range from various mining operations."

Louisiana is one of the major oil-producing States of the country. Commercial production of crude oil in the State began in 1902 and has increased to an estimated output of 157,409,000 barrels in 1945, which is the maximum production up to this time and places the State fourth in the nation. The cumulative production for Louisiana through 1944 is 1,544,481,000 barrels, and, adding the output for 1945, the total to January 1, 1946, is 1,681,890,000 barrels. Data on annual production of crude oil in Louisiana and tentative statistics for 1945 are given in table 1. The large production of crude oil in Louisiana and the present trend to utilize petroleum in accordance with its general characteristics make it increasingly important to present analytical data for crude oils. This report is the fifth of a series presenting such data obtained on crude oils from Louisiana according to the procedure used by the Bureau of Mines. Individual analyses are given for 82 samples from 64 fields; many of the samples are from recently discovered fields, and some are from new producing formations.

The resulting values for the heats of formation of Eu203 (cubic) and EuCls (hexagonal) were -386,970 ±l,200 cal/mole and -218,740 ±650 cal/mole, respectively, measured at 298.15° K.

The occurrence of hydrogen sulfide in the gas in solution in the oil produced from the Tensleep sandstone in the Elk Basin oil field in Wyoming constitutes a serious hazard to persons working in, that field. Aware of the general conditions because of petroleum reservoir studies being conducted in that field by its engineers, the Bureau of Mine's willingly agreed to a request of the Petroleum Administration for War to publicize the hazard and the measures for overcoming it. In October 1943 and November 1944, the Bureau of Mines investigated the method's used in handling the oil and in disposing of the hydro¬gen sulfide that occurs with it. This circular reports the results of these observations. HYDROGEN SULFIDE OCCURRENCE IN THE. ELK BASIN OIL FIELD The Elk Basin oil field is in Park County, Wyo., and Carbon County, Mont. It is about 18 miles north of Powell and 12 miles west of Frannie, Wyo. The original Elk Basin oil and gas field was situated in an eroded depression surrounded by an inner rimrock about 200 feet high with a bordering higher plateau about 500 feet above the basin floor.

So many subjects are covered in State mine-safety regulations that any attempt to compare different State laws in their entirety would be futile. On the other hand, if one selects a single phase or branch of safety work, such a comparison may prove profitable. The subject selected for study in this paper is limited to legislation or regulations dealing specifically with safeguarding (electric) motored equipment used in gassy mines. T When one reads glowing accounts of the safety activities being carried on here and there it is easy to believe that everything which is right and proper is being done to safeguard the mine.workers; but, when one takes time to look into the weakness of many State regulations, it is evident that there is still room for improvement. Undoubtedly it would have been much better for the safety of mines if electrical equipment had been introduced into mines 50 years earlier. If electricity had been in general use when the first mine regulations were pre- pared, those formulating the rules would have covered this hazard along with other hazards, but as electricity came in at a later period, safe mine legisla- tion regarding it has been woefully neglected. Today the United States in general is far behind most other coal-producing nations in the provision of adequate safety rules or laws for the installation and maintenance of electrical equipment and wiring. Returning to the subject of our study, approximately 30 of the 48 States mine coal. More than 20 of these States' produce coal in large quantities. How- ever, of the 30 States only four, 3 Pennsylvania, Utah, Washington, and West Virginia, have laws which specially call for the use of explosion-proof types

Calcareous rocks, of which the principal varieties are marble and lime¬stone, are used extensively for building and ornamental purposes. Onyx and travertine, subdivisions of these groups, are sufficiently distinctive in origin and use to merit separate classification. The purpose of this paper is to define the terms "onyx" and "travertine" and to describe the occurrences and uses of the materials bearing these names. ORIGIN AND CHARACTER Confusion exists in the use of the word "onyx." True onyx is a banded chalcedony, a form of silicon dioxide related to jasper, agate, and flint. Calcium carbonate is commonly deposited from solution in successive layers of varying color closely resembling onyx, and for this reason such calcareous rock is also called "onyx." The recent determination by Eckman and Rossini of the heat of formation of sulphur dioxide appears to be of much greater accuracy than any previous measurement . The value obtained by them , 70,940 cal . , is in good agreement with that of Thomsen ( 71,080 ) , but differs by about 1,700 calories from Berthelot's result ( 69,260 ) , and by 1,940 calories from the provisional figure ( 69,000 ) adopted by Lewis and Randall in their studies of the free energies of the sulphur compounds . This large discrepancy suggested the desirability of a recalculation of the free energy of sulphur dioxide . In addition it is now possiblt to fix the specific heat of S₂ gas with greater certainty than at the time of the original calculations . These two changes are incorporated in the recalculations described below , and directly affect the values of AH , and the Ar terms in the free energy equation . In the determination of the integration constant of the latter equation , the free energies and specific heats of water vapor and the oxides of carbon are required as auxiliary data . In this work these are based , with certain exceptions , upon the equations previously deduced , which differ appreciably from the corresponding equations of Lewis and Randall . 56 · The principal equilibria employed below , and the plan of calculation , remain the same as in the calculations of Lewis and Randall . Before beginning this revision a search of the literature was made , extending to August , 1930 , for studies of additional equilibria . Only one reaction was found that gives promise of increased accuracy . This is the equilibrium of sulphur dioxide with copper , cuprous oxide , and cuprous sulphide . In this case , however , certain of the subsidiary data are lacking , and until they become available , the existing studies of the equilibrium in this system can not be successfully utilized . The changes in the numerical data mentioned above , especially in the thermochemical constants , are therefore solely responsible for the rather significant differences of the revised from the original values of the free energy .

"SummaryAs part of an effort.to understand the mechanics of fine fragment formation in coal, which is important in studies of respirable dust due to mining, fracture toughness measurements and the strain energy density (SEO) theory were applied to calculate the crush zone size under a cutting tool in coal. This · zone is the major source of fine fragments in the 1 to 10 µm size range. The model used in these calculations is a boundary element program containing a failure criterion based on the SEO theory. The boundary element program calculates linear elastic stresses at numerous points in the coal material ahead of a cutting bit. These stresses arc then input to a subroutine called critical ftaw length and orientation (CFLO) which uses the SED theory to determine the CFLO for a small crack at the boundary element stress computation point. The extent of crushing is based on earlier postulates about . the role of inherent flaws in a fragmentation process. To form 1 to 10 µm fragments requires firstly a local stress strong enough to activate flaws with a characteristic length less than 1 to 10 µm and secondly, a flaw density sufficient to provide an average spacing between flaws also on the order of 1 to 10 µm. The locus of active lO µm ftaws represents the maximum possible extent of fine fragmentation in the 10 µm or less size range assuming that a sufficient inherent flaw density exists. The approach offers a first order approximation to the extent of crushing under a tool tip. The size and shape of the crush zone volume is affected by the attack angle and geometry of the tool.IntroductionFine fragment generation in the 1 to 10 µm size range under the action of a generic coal cutting tool may be explained on the basis of fracture mechanics which suggests two major sources of fine fragments: first in a crush zone near the tool tip and second by shear fracturing. along major macrocrack surfaces (Zipf and Bieniawski, 1988a). In this paper, fracture toughness measurements and the strain energy density theory are used to calculate the crush zone size. This zone represents the major source of fine fragments in the 1 to 10 µm size range and understanding the mechanical factors controlling its size represents a first step toward using fracture mechanics to characterize the ·tendency of various coals to produce undesirable fine fragments."
