A high-speed streak camera method for making equation of state measurements (shock and particle velocities) on samples of rock under dynamic load conditions is described. Experimental data are given for tests on 12 samples representing 5 rock types. Analysis of these data shows that the method is practical and that good reproducibility of results can be obtained. The pressure range covered in the tests was from 1 to 50 kilobars.

Two methods of recovering zinc from zinc ammonia complex solutions were investigated. One method studied was distillation of the ammonia from the solutions to recover a basic zinc sulfate, which after calcining to zinc oxide was reduced to metallic zinc using hydrogen at 900° C. The second method tested was electrolysis. The tests were made of synthetic and leach solutions analyzing about 80, 100, and 115 gpl (grams per liter) of Zn, NH3, and SO4, respectively. The leach solutions were prepared by oxidation leaching of a sphalerite flotation concentrate, assaying 55 pct zinc at elevated temperature and pressure. The distillation method recovered about 98 pct of the zinc in a product analyzing 97 pct zinc. Ammonia losses incurred during the leaching and distillation operations were about 0.1 lb per lb (pound per pound) of metallic zinc produced. Electrolysis of the solutions at a cathode current density of 25 amp per sq ft (ampere per square foot) yielded zinc deposits assaying in excess of 99.9 pct zinc. About 1.5 kwhr (kilowatt-hour) of power were consumed per pound of zinc deposited; the current efficiency was 72 pct. Other electrodeposition tests revealed that small amounts of ferric iron in the cell liquor were deleterious to electrolysis unless about 5 lb of glue per ton of zinc were present in the electrolyte. The use of glue and vigorous agitation of the electrolyte gave smooth zinc deposits from solutions containing as much as 0.1 gpl iron.

"It took only 9 years from the first appearance of roof shields on the U.S. longwall mining scene to the present predominance of shield faces. An apparent consequence is the welcome downward trend in accidents related to failures in longwall ground control. The report addresses load prediction, the effects of shield geometry on support loads, factors contributing to ground control, and related techniques. The Bureau of Mines took an active part in the evolution of longwall mining, including developing one of the first shield faces in 1975, the first lemniscatetype shields in 1976, the Mine Roof Simulator completed in 1980, the first shields in steeply pitching coalbeds in 1981, and the first multilift working of a thick coalbed in 1982. The information offered in this state-of-the-art report will assist in establishing criteria for roof support selection. INTRODUCTIONIn terms of roof support technology, the introduction of shields in the seventies and eighties was a major step forward. Table 1 indicates the predominance of shield faces on the U.S. longwall mining scene and its apparent consequence, a welcome downward trend of ground-control related accidents.The rapid progress of longwall technology began in 1975 and is highlighted by a development leading from the caliper shield to the modern lemniscate type. Shields have been gaining preference over chocks since their advent to longwall mining in 1975. Safety and productivity factors favoring shields over chocks are--1. A sheltered working space requiring minimum cleanup work.2. Structural stability that allows advancing without delay even with brushing roof contact and, by controlling all lateral loads, removing the requirement for cumbersome leg restraint and restoration devices.3. Wide hydraulic range of mining height.The development of roof shields in the Federal Republic of Germany preceded and paralleled their rapid adoption by U.S. miners. In 1983, 87 pct of the total production in Germany came from shield faces (1).2 In Great Britain, the National Coal Board introduced the first shield support system in 1977 to initiate Advanced Mining Technology (ATM) and Heavy Duty Mechanization (HDM) programs; as of mid-1982, 44 shield faces were operating, or 7.5 pct of a total of 581 faces CJ_)."

Apparatus developed by the Bureau of Mines for thermal analysis of oil shale was used to determine the thermal properties of shortite. Dissociation of shortite near 470° C occurs as an endothermic reaction that could consume significant quantities of heat in the oil-shale retorting process that produces shale oil. The shortite dissociation products undergo other thermal reactions that would not affect the retorting process. These reactions include crystal inversions near 365° C and 425° C and melting and decomposition endotherms above 500° C. Two separate reaction route for fusion and decomposition of the shortite decomposition products are dictated by the presence or absence of CO2 around the sample.

The Bureau of Mines investigated a glass containing approximately 17 percent lithia and 83 percent silica to establish a method of devitrifying cast and rolled shapes. Glass shapes with high strength were made by melting, forming, and rapid cooling of the composition, and the shapes subsequently were converted to a crystalline condition by heat treatment. The best devitrification schedule included rapid cooling of the glass to below 300° C, followed by reheating at a rate of 50° to 400° C per hour, depending on the size of the shape, followed by a of 60 to 70 hours at 500° C and another period of 15 hours at 800° C. attempts to use faster heating rates or slow cooling to accomplish devitrification in deformation of the shapes. The crystalline shapes had flexural strengths that averaged over 33,000 psi, achieved with an annealing time of 60 to 70 hours at 500° C.

A series of alloys was laboratory prepared by adding up to 4 weight-percent cobalt to the basic composition of type AM 350 (AISI 633) stainless steel. Aging curves were established for each alloy at 750° F, 850° F, and 950° F for lengths of time up to 100 hours. A series of annealed steels containing as much as 1 weight-percent cobalt was cold-rolled 50 percent and aged for 3 hours at 850° F. No improvement in hardness due to cobalt was observed in the steels transformed by heat treatment. Slight improvements in hardness were observed in the steels transformed by cold working.

Roof support systems, longwall shields in particular, have persistently grown in size and capacity for the past 25 years. Why is this? Is it a good thing or is it unnecessary? What are the consequences of this “bigger-the-better” design philosophy? Rarely do we see a “one size fits all” approach to roof support except when it comes to longwall shields, where the historical trend for new procurements is to simply purchase the highest capacity support you can buy. Does high capacity ensure failures will not occur? The answer is no! The highest capacity tailgate supports are typically the ones that fail the most often. What does this tell us? It tells us that there are fundamental aspects of support design and ground control that we still do not understand or recognize when designing a support system. This paper provides an interesting evaluation of these issues and proposes a different approach to support design that attempts to match the support performance characteristics to the ground behavior. Along the way, some of the old premises of support design will be discarded, and new “controversial” ideas developed. Thinking outside the box never hurt any industry. Mining has made it a common practice.

The productive capacity of natural gasoline and cycling plants in the United States or. January 1, 1954, was 926 thousand barrels per day, according to the Bureau of Mines biennial survey. This represented an increase of 114 thousand barrels per day during the 2-year period since the last survey. In the previous 2-year period, capacity had increased 164 thousand barrels per day. The total number of plants increased from 521 on January 1, 1952, to 535 on January 1, 1954. The number of operating plants increased from 506 to 521. The major increases in capacity took place in Texas, Illinois, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and New Mexico, with the absorption-type plant continuing to account for most of the new construction. In 1954, however, 6 plants reported using a refrigeration process whereas only 1 plant reported this in 1952. The number of operating compression-type plants continued to decline and combination plants showed a decline this year because a number of these plants were reclassified as absorption-type.

SCIENTIFIC inquiries concerning phenomena that may influence mining technology were widely publicized during the year. The deep-hole drilling project "Moho," 3 the use of nuclear explosives underground, and the recovery of minerals from the depths of the sea became subjects of scientific and general discussion. The mining industry continued to watch these developments with keen interest: but its more immediate concern was the increasing tempo of competition between mineral commodities, the domestic producers of these commodities, and foreign sources of supply. The competitive situation has intensified the industry's efforts to develop more efficient new mining methods, as well as to improve the efficiency of present practices. The attitude of the industry was well illustrated by rapidly expended use of low-cost ammonium nitrate explosives, the establishment of rigid schedules for equipment maintenance, and close attention to the detailed costs of production. The complexity of planning a new coal mine is aptly illustrated by the editors of Mechanization in the April 1959 Issue, in which they outline the cost of developing a mine and the various problems, factors, and decisions involved.4

Lignite mining in North Dakota was begun about 1884 to supply the domestic needs of settlers. Annual production has grown rather slowly but steadily, exceeding 3 million tons in 1950. The western part of the State has lignite reserves, amounting to 351 billion tons, underlying an area of 28,000 square miles. Contour strip mining has almost completely replaced underground mining as the method of production. Lignite is often found under rather shallow and easily removed overburden, and this is the primary reason for the change in mining practice. Current mining operations are conducted where the overburden is 30 to 70 feet thick. Contour strip mining results in high production rates, at present 27 to 56 tons per man-day. These high production rates result in relatively low production costs.

Unusual circumstances may require that a longwall retreat into or through a previously driven room. The operation can be completed successfully, but there have been a number of spectacular failures. To help determine what factors contribute to such failures, a comprehensive international database of 131 case histories has been compiled. The cases include six failures where major rock falls occurred in front of the shields, and seven even more serious failures involving major overburden weighting. The case studies suggest two types of room failure mechanism. The first is a roof fall type failure caused by loading of the immediate roof at the face as the fender or remnant longwall panel narrows. The second is an overburden weighting type failure caused by the inability of the roof to bridge the recovery room and face area, and affecting rockwell above the immediate roof. The data indicate that the roof fall type of failure is less likely when intensive roof reinforcement (bolts, cables and trusses) is employed together with higher-capacity shields. The overburden weighting failures, in contrast, occurred when the roof was weak and little standing support was used. Weighting failures were not greatly affected by the density of roof reinforcement. In one of the overburden weighting cases, in a Pittsburgh coal bed mine, stress cell, convergence, bolt load and extensometer data have been used to analyze the failure in detail. The washability examination of a coal establishes the quality of the product that could be prepared by mechanical cleaning, shows how much impurity would have to be eliminated to attain a particular quality of product, indicates what type of cleaning process would be suitable, and tells whether the coal could be cleaned efficiently, The coal-preparation laboratories of the Bureau of Mines make washability examinations of coal for a variety of purposes. Sometimes these examinations are made as an integral part of research conducted on coal-washing problems. Occasionally they are made on coals mined on Government-owned land or on coals destined for use in Government installations. Often they are made on coals from new fields or new beds in existing fields to help establish the characteristics of the Nation's coal reserves. Whatever the original reason for doing the work, the results often are useful later in evaluating deposits or in the design of cleaning plants. Publication of the results of such studies provides for the widest possible usefulness. This report brings together the results of washability examinations made on 1 coal each from Oregon and Idaho, 2 from Wyoming, 5 from Utah, and 11 from Washington. Material of this nature is inherently difficult to summarize. Some of the coals are so clean} despite full-scam mechanical mining, that they could not be improved materially by washing; others present some of the most difficult preparation problems found in the country.

The use of oxygen breathing apparatus during rescue and recovery operations at both coal and metal mines has become so commonplace that there is a tendency for the industry not to give such apparetus the full measure of credit that it deserves in any particular disaster , therefore , the data presented herein should give some idea of what has been done in this regard during the past 15 years that is , up to 1910 by the Technologic Branch of the U. S. Geological Survey , and thence ( to the end of 1922) by the U. S. Bureau of Mines .

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is investigating several types of low-grade uranium deposits. Projections indicate that an increased percentage of future production will be derived from such sources. One material studied was from the Coso Mountains of California; this material contained 0.04 to 0.12 percent U3O8. The deposit contains at least two distinct types of mineralization. The material representing the bulk of this deposit was amenable to acid leaching; 80 to 85 percent U308 extraction resulted from leaching with 20 to 40 pounds per ton of sulfuric acid. No oxidizing agent was required. This ore fraction could be treated by either agitation or percolation leaching. Uranium recovery and purification from the acid leach solution was accomplished using anion exchange followed by precipitation with hydrogen peroxide and ammonia. The second type of mineral was very refractory to acid leaching; a maximum extraction of only 44 percent was obtained with sulfuric acid. Nitric and hydrochloric acids were ineffective also.

ANALYTICAL PRESSURE - VOLUME COMPUTATIONS FOR THE MINE PROTOTYPE A new coal mine is projected, with entrance by slope 1,500 feet long. Nine main entries will be standard for development, five as intake and four as return. One return shaft is planned near the slope bottom, and an intake shaft and portal are planned 5,000 feet north of the slope bottom. The slope will have an area of 150 square feet and a perimeter of 55 feet. A belt and supply track will be within the slope. The return shaft will be circular with a diameter of 18 feet and will be 500 feet deep with an escapeway. Two hundred feet of the shaft and 500 feet of the slope will be concrete lined. Select the fan to operate five units per shift and drive the 5,000 feet to a proposed new portal, using the slope for an intake. Two main splits are planned with the maximum of three units on any split. The amount of air desired at each unit is 25,000 c.f.m; a shop at the slope bottom will require 10,000 c.f.m. In the solution of this or any similar problem, the first step is to determine the resistance factors. CALCULATION OF R FACTORS Slope area = 150 sq. ft.; Perimeter = 55 feet; Length = 1,500 feet. The friction factor K must be established. Five hundred feet of the slope is smooth lined, moderately obstructed by belt; K = 35. The remaining 1000 feet is in sedimentary rock and moderately obstructed; K = 85.

"INTRODUCTION During September 1944, the Bureau of Mines undertook a program of investigation and limited exploratory drilling at the Last Chance mine, near the village of Arthur in Grant County, Wisconsin, as part of a general investigation of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin when every effort was being made to increase the production of metals important to the Nation's war program.The Bureau's attention was directed, to the Last Chance mine when the operators discovered high percentages of zinc in an exploratory churn drill hole a short distance southeast of the mine. The ore was found in the Trenton Limestone, which underlies the ore horizon then being mined. To determine whether this discovery was important, and to demonstrate the possible extension of the ore the Bureau of Mines drilled five additional holes in the vicinity of the discovery.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Nines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The iron-ore ranges in the Lake Superior district are the liarquette in Michigan, Menominee and Gogebic in Michigan end Wisconsin, and the Vermilion, Mesabi, and Cuvuna in Minnesota. These ranges produce about 85 percent of the iron ore mined in the United States. Accident experience in connection with this production is better than that of the regions producing the remaining 15 percent. Production and shipments vary slightly from year to year but closely approximate each other over a period of years. During the 4-year period 1940 to 1943, inclusive, 323,667,599 long tons of iron ore was shipped from the Lake Superior district.4/ Michigan and Wisconsin shipped 65,386,608 tons, or 20.2 percent of the total, and employed approximately 15,000 men; Minnesota shipped 258,280,991 tons, or 79.8 percent of the total, and employed approximately 10,000 men. The tons produced per man employed is much, greater in Minnesota than in Michigan and Wisconsin owing to the large open-cut production in Minnesota.

Develop new technology to encourage domestic processing of automobile catalytic converters for recovering platinum -group metals. Background Automobile catalytic converters are used to convert pollutants in automobile exhaust into water vapor, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen, About 1 million troy ounces of platinum-group metals arc used each year in the. United Slates to manufacture catalytic converters. It has been estimated that about 60 pct of the used catalytic converters arc being collected. Most of these used catalytic converters were not processed in the United States but were exported to Japan or Europe for processing. In 1991, about 250,000 troy ounces of platinum-group metals were recovered from scrap catalytic converters collected in the United States. Each short ton of decanned catalyst may contain 30 troy ounces of platinum-group metals valued at over $15,000. Development of an economic process for the recovery of platinum-group metals that can be operated on a small or large scale may increase, the percentage of catalytic converters collected and encourage domestic processing to recover a platinum-group metal concentrate. This would significantly decrease the dependence of the United States on imports for these critical and strategic metals.
