Only a limited number of mass and infrared reference spectra of high purity unsaturated hydrocarbons and oxygenates are presently available in the literature. To aid Bureau of Mines research programs requiring such references, 64 mass spectra and 70 infrared spectra were obtained and are reported. The individual compounds, acquired from commercial sources, were purified by preparatory gas chromatography. Purity determinations were made using a combination of analytical gas chromatography, microhydrogenation, and catalytic deoxygenation. These spectra will aid spectroscopists in the identification of compounds of the types reported.

The Metaline mining district was examined in 1942 by Bureau of Mines engineers with the cooperation of geologists of the Federal Geological Survey. Because the demands of war production were rapidly depleting reserves in some of the older zinc-lead producing districts of the United States, it was decided that an attempt should be made to increase the proved or indicated ore reserves of the Metaline district. With this objective, certain areas to be explored by diamond drilling were selected. The Bureau of Mines began work on this program. January 15, 1943; work terminated September 8, 1945. Forty-five holes were drilled in seven areas, The holes ranged from 154 feet to 2,050 feet in length. Their combined length was 38,150 feet. Thirty-three of the holes were drilled in. the North Pend Oreille and the West Bella May areas.

"INTRODUCTION Information on the gaseous products from the detonation of explosives has been obtained in two ways. In the first, the atmosphere in mines is analyzed after blasting, and in the second, the gases found after detonating an explosive in a testing apparatus are analyzed. The Bureau of Mines, in a cooperative research 3/ that compared data obtained in the field with those obtained in the testing station, showed that the results were not in entire agreement. The production of carbon monoxide was found to be governed chiefly by the oxygen balance of the explosive, but the production of oxides of nitrogen did not change in so simple a manner. Because of the increasing interest in correlations between the composition of the explosive and the production of toxic gases, it seemed desirable to continue the investigation.PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATIONAs field tests are both time consuming and expensive and as field results are affected by factors that are not always under control of or clearly evaluated by the operator, the purpose of this investigation is to develop a testing-station procedure that will reproduce the gaseous products quantitatively under known conditions analogous to those that may be expected in the field. In addition, the factors affecting the formation of toxic gases, particularly oxides of nitrogen, will be studied,"

Calorimetric determinations of low-temperature heat capacities and standard enthalpy of formation were made by the Federal Bureau of Mines for basic aluminum sulfite, A1203?2.0S02?5.3H20. The standard values of entropy (S°), enthalpy of formation (?Hf°), and calculated Gibbs energy of formation (?Gf°) at 298.15 K are 85.2±0.1 cal/deg-mole, -943.1±1.2 kcal/mole, and -820.7±1.2 kcal/mole, respectively.

The Bureau of Mines determined agents that are effective in foaming heavy brines and oil from gas wells in severe concentrations of sodium chloride, in severe concentrations of calcium chloride, or in moderate oil-brine mixtures. Dynamic foam tests were designed to select the more effective foaming agents. Numerous foaming agents were tested in concentrated simulated brines, in oilfield brines having varied concentrations of ions, in heavy natural brines, and in a commercial brine generally used as a reservoir pressure-balancing fluid. Several agents were detected that could perform efficiently in the field under the most severe saline conditions. Agents that promote foaming in oil-brine mixtures were also determined.

The development of metallurgical processes may be divided into periods : First , the discovery of a basic reaction which brings about the production of the desired product from the available raw material ; second , a long stage of mechanical development during which little or no attention is paid to the reaction itself ; and third , a careful study of the reaction . Most metallurgical processes are to -day approaching the end of the second period . This we may illustrate by the steel process . The reaction of carbon with iron ore to produce pig iron and the subsequent refinement of the pig iron by an oxidation reaction is very old . Development in modern times has been almost entirely mechanical , the development of the blast furnace , furnace , the Bessemer process , the Siemens process , and even the Aston process for wrought iron being mechanical improvements almost entirely . Metallurgy is now entering a phase where the reactions are being considered . The question of how far can they be made to proceed is being repeatedly asked . As mechanical processes are improved , we approach a limit to which our basic reactions can be pushed which is determined by the nature of the reactions themselves . We want to know : How far can iron be decarbonized by iron oxide ? How low can the oxygen of copper be reduced by any given reaction? How efficiently can the fuel in a zinc reduction process be used ? The demand for purer metals and lower production costs has forced these and similar questions upon us . How are we to answer them ? The determination of these equilibria or end points of metallurgical reactions by direct means is fraught with difficulty because here we must overcome mechanical difficulties which too often become the limiting factors even in the laboratory and we do nottherefore get the actual limit to which the reaction itself may be carried . Further , there are so many reactions of metallurgical materials that to survey each separately is a job to give pause to any experimenter or group of experimenters .

In recent years over 100,000 persons have been killed annually in the United. States by accidents; about one-fifth of these have been workers in some of our industries; about one-third have been killed by motor vehicles; about another third have mot death in home accidents, chiefly falls, burns, scalds, explosions, poisons, asphyxiations, suffocations, cuts, scratches, and so forth; and the rest have been killed in public accidents, excluding those caused by vehicles but including accidents on railroads or electric cars, drowning, and deaths by firearms and. other means. Definite statistics on nonfatal accidents are not readily available, but at least 10,000,000 fairly serious accidents probably occur in the United States annually. The latest industrial-accident statistics are obtainable from 1935 National Safety Council publications, in which annual industrial fatalities are divided about as follows (in round numbers): Agriculture, 4,500; trade and service, 4,500; construction, 3,100; transportation and public utilities, 2,900; manufacturing, 2,600; mining, quarrying, petroleum, etc., 1,900.

In April 1948, the Bureau of Mines was requested to evaluate the graphite deposit' known as the Benjamin Franklin and Just mines in Chester County, Pa. After preliminary investigation, it was recommended that the Bureau core-drill, trench, and sample the deposit and make beneficiation tests on the ore. During the first and second World Wars, flake graphite was in short supply, and a number of deposits in the United States were exploited. In 1942, the Defense Plant Corporation, through its lessee, the Benjamin Franklin Graphite Co., purchased 70.263 acres of graphite-bearing land and built a complete mining and milling plant with a capacity of 300 tons of crude ore per 24-hour day at a cost of $426,250 (Plancor No. 1254).

The Colorado Minerals Co. calcite properties in Archuleta and Hinsdale Counties, Colo., (fig. 1) were examined by Bureau of Mines engineers in 1943. The demand for optical calcite during the war prompted the examinations and resulting development programs on the Meadows and Seavy ranch properties near Pagosa Springs, Archuleta County. Development was begun on the Meadows property in November 1943 and continued to the Seavy ranch property. The work consisted of stripping the overburden from the calcite areas and excavating pits and trenches with a bulldozer. The pits and trenches exposing the most promising calcite veins were then deepened by hand, and one shaft was sunk to a depth of 30 feet. A total of 36 trenches and 9 pits were excavated by bulldozer and. hand methods (figs. 2, 3, and 4). The calcite deposits occur as veins and irregular bodies filling fractures in the Mancos shale of Cretaceous age. The fractures persist for considerable distances along the strike, although the calcite filling may not be continuous for more than a few feet. The widths of individual veins range from a few inches to several feet. The calcite crystals uncovered at the surface and in pits, trenches, and shafts were found to be unsuitable for optical purposes because of fracturing and color in the crystals.

"The potential health effects of quartz-bearing airborne dust in mine and mill atmospheres point to the need for the quantification of quartz content in the source material for determining the source-sink relationships and for choosing applicable control measures. While a standard method exists from a regulatory point of view for the sampling of coal mine atmospheres for determining (i) respirable dust concentrations and (ii) the amount of quartz in the samples, there is no generally accepted standard method for quartz analysis in bulk samples of coal and host rocks. Generally, the bulk sample is reduced to a powder for producing quartz analysis samples. Extensive controls arc necessary to ensure representativeness of the analysis samples when these are very minute fractions of the bulk samples. Since the amount of analysis sample is not limited, alternative methods for quartz analysis may also be tried. It is, however, necessary to adopt a procedure which will satisfy several statistical requirements to guarantee representativeness of the quartz analysis samples.In this paper, the important factors in the preparation of quartz analysis samples from the host rocks and bulk samples are discussed. The method developed to prepare the analysis samples is outlined. The results of application of the procedures are presented. The procedure developed for quartz analysis sample preparation is based on sound statistical foundations. The procedure has been validated for reproducibility and homogeneity.The current methods used for quartz analysis in powders are the P-7 infrared spectrometry and quantitative X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Both have similar restrictions concerning the sample characteristics and operational problems, which arc intrinsic to radiation beams, device geometry, mechanics and controls of the radiation behavior. Although improvements can be made in the spectrometers and diffractometers, some of the most important steps are the procedures for analysis sample preparation from bulk samples and for calibration of the instruments. The sample preparation process is often referred to as one of grinding and sizing the bulk sample to generate the powder for the scanning devices. The particle sizes are referred to and their influence emphasized but the representativeness of the sample is assumed. Assuring sample representativeness during the sample preparation procedures is critical.For the sampling of airborne respirable dust in coal mines, the collection devices, the collection procedures and the analysis procedures are defined. This is not true for bulk samples where weights must be reduced thousands of times to generate the analysis samples for the scanning devices. The specifications to be developed may include bulk sample amount, sample reduction procedures, sample particle size distribution and sample amounts. However, the common problem of insufficient sample amount which is often encountered with mine airborne dust samples need not exist for bulk samples. Further, the same bulk sample can yield analysis samples for several experiments. The latter, of course, requires sample homogeneity.Three concepts are important in the selection of any procedure for sample preparation and analysis. These arc accuracy, reproducibility and representativeness. The adopted procedure has to guarantee a homogeneous sample representative of the population, a defined level of accuracy and reproducibility. Important statistical concepts are embedded in these requirements, particularly with respect to estimation and dispersion errors. Accuracy and reproducibility are totally different though not independent concepts. Estimation is related to accuracy and the true value. Dispersion is related to reproducibility and is measured by the classical statistical standard deviation of the distribution of a series of measurements or analysis performed over the same lot or analysis sample. The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory and continuous pilot plant flotation tests to determine the feasibility of recovering commercial-grade mica from an Alabama graphitic-mica schist. Preconcentration of the ground ore on a Humphrey's spiral was employed to reject the heavy minerals and part of the quartz in a product virtually free of mica. The acid-cationic mica flotation process recovered over 89 percent of the mica in a product containing 98.7 percent mica. Grinding of the mica concentrate in a fluid energy mill produced a product with a bulk density of 12 lb per cubic foot.

This report describes the exploration work done in 1941 in connection with the search for strategic minerals as authorized by the Strategic Materials Act approved by the President on June 7, 1939. It deals with the various manganese deposits and showings in the Tombstone mining district of Cochise County, Ariz. The exploration project comprised a study of the geology, mapping of the areas, and exploration of various mines and deposits by sampling old drifts, crosscuts, and scopes, supplemented by diamond drilling from underground stations. The Federal Government's manganese-purchasing programs have revived interest in occurrences such as the scattered deposits near Tombstone. Because of this, the Bureau of Mines project report on the Tombstone district, prepared originally in 1941 but not published, has been revised and now is being made public.

The Bureau of Mines devised and constructed a modified Knudsen effusion apparatus, permitting a constant measure of the weight of effusing vapor, to determine the equilibrium vapor pressure of metal halides at temperatures up to 1,200° K and over the pressure range 10-5 to 10-2 torr. The reliability of the apparatus was established by determining the vapor pressure of potassium chloride. After correcting for partial dimerization of the vapor, data obtained on solid KCl between 750° and 950° K can be expressed by the following equation:

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is investigating hydrometallurgical processing techniques to recycle metals from semiconductors and other advanced materials. Cadmium and tellurium were recovered from mixed CdTe/CdS scrap produced in the manufacture of thin-film photovoltaic devices. Selective cadmium dissolution was achieved using oxygen-pressure leaching in dilute sulfuric acid. Leaching the scrap for 90 min at 110° C in 2.2NH2S04 under 400 psig 02 yielded 97% Cd extraction; however, cadmium content of the residue ranged between 4% and 7%. Soluble iron was added to the lixiviant to catalyze oxidation of the CdS component. Tellurium and sulfur remained in the leach residue primarily in the elemental form. The iron and tellurium were removed from the cadmium-rich leach liquor by adjusting the pH to 5.3. The cadmium was recovered as cadmium sulfate crystals by evaporating the solution. Alternative leaching and purification schemes are discussed.

This paper, describing milling practice at Mount Ira Minis, is one of a series covering milling methods and cost that is being published by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior. The Mount Isa concentrator began operations in day 1931 by treating a mixture of oxidized and sulfide ores. Since March 1935 only sulfide ores have been milled; this change involved major alterations to the flow sheet. The maximum capacity on mixed oxide and sulfide ores was 2,650 tons per day; the present capacity is approximately 1,880 tons of sulfide ore per day. The installation of additional crushing, grinding, and flotation equipment when completed early in 1939 will increase the maximum capacity of the concentrator to 2,240 tons of sulfide ore daily.

Surface resistivity techniques were used at four field sites to monitor changes in apparent resistivities with variations in soil moisture content in the vadose zone. Apparent resistivity values were correlated with gravimetric moisture contents from soil samples taken at each site. Tensiometer readings were taken at two sites and correlated with the results of gravimetric moisture contents and apparent resistivities. Moisture at two of the sites was added by extensive watering; rainfall events were monitored at the other two sites. A recharge event at a dewatering program was monitored at a fifth site. A Ghosh-Koefed multi-layer computing algorithm was used to derive true resistivities from bulk or apparent resistivities. An automated data acquisition system was developed to measure resistivity changes and to process the data in the field. These studies are the first to evaluate measurement of moisture migration in clay rich soils using surface resistivity techniques. Results indicate that surface resistivity techniques readily measure changes in moisture contents in the vadose zone in clay rich soils. Correlation of apparent and true resistivity values with gravimetric moisture contents is more complex and requires additional research.

Eighteen elements were determined spectrochemically in vanadium metal and its compounds in the general range of 1 to 1,000 ppm by means of spark-ignited unidirectional arc excitation. The samples were converted to vanadium pentoxide and combined with a mixture of graphite, lithium carbonate, and gallium oxide. For the molybdenum determination, the oxidized samples were mixed with sodium chloride and packed in copper electrodes. Average precision of the method was 15.6 percent relative standard deviation and relative error was 4.4 percent.

"INTRODUCTION During the course of research on the beneficiation of the Big Seam iron ores of Birmingham, Ala., an urgent need was felt for quick iron assays of grab samples for mill control. Since the gangue minerals in these ores - quartz, limestone, and clay - all have about the same specific gravity, the use of a specific-gravity method was anticipated as a means of measuring the iron content. The idea of estimating the composition of a mineral mixture by measuring its specific gravity is by no means new. However, the usual method of carry in out this idea proved unreliable when applied to the Big Seam ores. The usual rapid method of determining specific gravity consists of measuring the volume of a known weight of sample that has been dried at high temperature. The inadequacy of this method led to the development of the rapid, modified, specific-gravity determination described in this paper.This work- was an incidental development resulting from research on beneficiation of iron ores by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama and ore producing companies of the Birmingham district."

"Introduction In 1925 the Bureau of Mines published as Technical Paper 346 a discussion of typical crude oils of the Western Hemisphere. That paper was one of a series of surveys of typical crude oils, and was the first of these to deal with properties of crude oils from countries other than the United States. The paper contains comments, tabulated data, and individual analyses of crudes typical of the producing districts of Canada, Mexico, Trinidad, Venezuela, Argentina, Colombia, and Peru; for comparison, it also has analyses of typical crudes from the chief producing districts of the United States.The Bureau of Mines undertook a study of foreign crude oils for two reasons: First, foreign fields are potential sources of supply for the United States; in fact, considerable quantities of some foreign crudes have already been imported. Second, these oils are very similar in physical and chemical properties to oils found in the United States, and a study of these resemblances has scientific value.After the publication of Technical Paper 346, the attention of the Bureau was called to the fact that the two analyses of crude oil from Venezuela which appeared in that paper were not completely representative of the production of that country. Samples of other types of oil were procured through the cooperation of Mr. R. Ogarrio, manager of the Texas Petroleum. Co., Huston, Texas, and officials of the following companies operating in Venezuela; British Controlled Oilfields, Ltd., Venezuelan Oil Concessions, Ltd., Creole Syndicate, and Venezuelan Gulf Oil Co.. Samples were collected and dispatched by Mr. D. 3. Park, representative in Maracaibo, Venezuela, of the Texas Petroleum Co. The value of the interest and cooperation of these agencies in obtaining the samples is gratefully acknowledged."
