A windowed-cell phase equilibrium apparatus was used to obtain equilibrium vapor- liquid data for a helium-bearing natural gas (Hogback) at temperatures from -100 to -250° F and pressures to 500 psia. Anomalous phase behavior resulting in the formation of two stable liquid phases occurred at tmperatures below -200° F and pressures above 200 psia. A review of the published literature on the occurrence of multiple-liquid phases included in the report indicates that the experimental results with Hogback gas are the first substantiated evidence of a vapor-liquid-liquid equilibria in a helium-containing natural gas.

Data obtained by the Federal Bureau of Mines on the dust explosion hazard in air are presented for 220 samples of agricultural products. Information is given on ignition temperature of dust clouds and layers, minimum explosive concentration, minimum electrical energy for ignition, explosion pressure and rates of pressure rise, amount of inert dust required to prevent flame propagation, and, in a few instances, the permissible oxygen concentration in an atmosphere to prevent ignition by spark and by heated surface. The effects of particle size and source of sample on explosibility are shown. The relative ignition sensitivity, severity of explosion, and overall explosibility of the materials are characterized by empirical indexes. This report contains Ma obtained by the Bureau in laboratory studies on the explosion hazards of agricultural dusts. Recognition of the dangers will encourage adoption of adequate measures to prevent ignition and explosion during preparation, processing, and utilization of the materials. Hard rock mining has grown in importance in the Yukon Territory during the last 10 years while Alaskan hard rock mining has declined. One asbestos deposit in Alaska is dormant, but an asbestos deposit 55 miles to the east in the Yukon Territory is being mined by the Clinton Mine Div., Cassiar Asbestos Corp., Ltd. In this Bureau of Mines report, the economics of mining in the two locations were derived using the Clinton mine as a model. Both deposits were assumed to be of equal size and mined by similar methods. Conventional open pit mining and processing methods were assumed, and capital and operating costs were derived using flowsheets and standard costing methods. The estimated cost for the mine, mill, and support facilities in Alaska was about 30 percent more expensive than that in the Yukon Territory. The higher labor rates in Alaska were the primary contributor to the higher construction costs; freight rates added only slightly to the total costs. Approximately two-thirds of the additional annual costs of operating in Alaska were for wages and fringe benefits. The price required for the Alaskan asbestos fiber was $356.65 per ton compared with $287.44 for Yukon fiber, plus or minus 20 percent. A 12 percent discounted cash flow rate of return, 100 percent equity financing, and a rapid writeoff of assets were assumed.

This information circular is one of a series the Bureau of Mines plans to publish describing the methods and costs of mining uranium on the Colorado Plateau. The Temple Mountain mining district is unique among the uranium-producing areas on the plateau. This relatively isolated mining district is in Emery County, Utah, on the eastern flank of the San Rafael Swell, about 35 miles southwest of the town of Green River. The district lies just within the eastern escarpment of the San Rafel Reef - a rampart of rugged and tilted sandstone cliffs that encircles the highly eroded core known as the Sinbad Country. The presence of petroleum matter found associated with the ore deposits, the occurrence of uranium in various formations, and the structural deformation caused by collapsed features have aroused a great deal of geologic interest. Mine development on Calyx Flat is distinctive, in that the ore deposits are worked through 36-inch calyx-drill holes.

Subsidence and ground movement are phenomena common to and attendant upon practically all large-scale mining operations, and under certain conditions may occur in all workings, large and small. The interpretation of the cause of failure in rock masses involves a study of the nature of plants of weakness common to all rocks. The dominating planes of weakness can readily be determined by observation in any given locality, and in order of importance in the study of subsidence are (1) faulting planes, (2) bedding planes, (3) joint planes, and (4) other prominent planes of weakness such as thrust and shear planes and contacts. This report has mainly to do with the third item, joint planes, and is a preliminary statement which t to be followed by a more complete report in bulletin form.

Three-axis ultrasonic anemometers are used to study airflow in the NIOSH ventilation gallery where ventilation in an underground mine is simulated. In this study, performance characteristics of this anemometer are evaluated and the effects of sensor orientation and sampler location on flow readings are examined. The study results provide guidelines for more effective use of the ultrasonic anemometers in the ventilation gallery.

Ten composite samples of Mesabi Range nonmagnetic taconite from the Hibbing, Minn., area were evaluated by flotation and by reduction roasting-magnetic separation to determine their potential as a future source of iron are. Only one of the composites yielded concentrates that could be considered marketable, using as a criterion a 10-to-1 iron-to-silica ratio. Cursory petrographic examinations of all 10 composited samples and a detailed mineralogical study on 1 sample suggest that unfavorable mineralogical associations between iron and gangue minerals are responsible for their poor beneficiation characteristics.

This report presents pertinent data on all active water-flooding projects in Washington County, Okla., and describes in detail the operation and production history of five representative floods. The flooding of partly depleted oil-bearing sands to produce petroleum that would not be recovered by other methods is becoming increasingly important to the oil industry. In 1942, two water-flooding projects in Washington County produced 35 barrels of oil daily from 90 developed acres. In March 1951, 4,000 barrels of oil was being produced daily by the injection of 58,000 barrels of water on 19 active projects covering 1,645 acres. Several projects are being extended, and new operations are being initiated. Figure 1 shows the location of the active water-flooding projects in Washington County. The yearly oil production from Washington County increased from 1,076,000 barrels in 1948 to 1,720,000 barrels in 1950, owing principally to the effects of water flooding. To March 1951, permits to flood more than 8,000 acres in Washington County had been granted by the Oklahoma Corporation Commission.

Physiol. 256 (Cell Physiol. 25): C405-C412, 1989.-A kinetic model was developed to describe the production of superoxide (02) by single pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM). Model predictions were compared with experimental results obtained from single rat PAM. The 02 was quantified by measuring the reduction of nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT) to a diformazan precipitate (NBTH,) from video-recorded images of individual cells. The kinetic model considered three reactions: 1 ) the production of extracellular 02 from the reduction of oxygen by NADPH oxidase using intracellular NADPH as the substrate, 2) the subsequent dismutation of 02 to form H,O,, and 3) the reaction of 02 and NBT to form diformazan. NBT specificity for 02 was analyzed by comparing results in the presence and absence of superoxide dismutase (SOD) that catalyzes the dismutation of 02 to H,O,. Measured PAM heterogeneity was accounted for by varying the concentration of intracellular NADPH, its rate of depletion, and the concentration of intracellular NADPH oxidase in the kinetic model. Model predictions compared favorably with experimental results except when SOD was present. This discrepancy may be due to diffusional limitations because NBT is a relatively small molecule (818 mo! wt) compared with SOD (34,000 mol wt). In addition, the cell surface is both ruffled and negatively charged, which may introduce steric hindrances and/ or electrostatic effects, since SOD is also negatively charged, whereas NBT is positively charged.PULMONARY ALVEOLAR MACROPHAGES (PAM) protect the lungs by phagocytizing foreign debris and bacteria. This process is accompanied by the production of superoxide anion (02) at the surface of the plasma membrane (3, 31). Driving long development raises probably is one of the most hazardous and expensive operations in underground mining. The safe handling of men and materials becomes more difficult and more time consuming in the higher sections of the raise. The efficient ventilation of these sections often is a major problem. This information circular describes a unique method by which Resurrection Mining Co, safely and efficiently completed a 622-foot vertical raise at its Irene shaft near Leadville, Colo. The method used by the company involved driving a raw, 6-foot-diameter ventilation raise and emergency escapeway, using a work cage that was suspended on a hoisting rope extended down a small-diameter drill hole. Although the method was new and experimental, the raise was completed in record time. Overall costs were less than they would have been with conventional methods. The company's initial experience suggested improvements both in design and operating technique that should prove of value to others who contemplate using the cage method of raising

This Country Documentation Report presents the development of economic indices for Zambia for the period from 1970 through 1981. The work done through the Bureau of' Mines, Minerals Availability Program, under Contract number J0225001. This contract calls for the development of twelve index time series describing factor input costs in the mining sector of 95 countries. The twelve index time series describe the costs of: 1) mining wages, 2) construction wages, 3) equipment and repair parts, 4) bits and related steel, 5) timber and lumber, 6) fuel, 7) powder and blasting agents, 8) tires, 9) construction materials, 10) industrial materials, 11) transportation, and 12) electrical power. These indices combined with weight factors being developed by the personnel of the Minerals Availability Field Office (MAFO) of the Bureau of Mines in Denver, Colorado, will be used to perform instantaneous updates of all costs relating to the mining industry. The indices were developed primarily for use in the Bureau's Minerals Availability Program in assessing the worldwide availability of nonfuel minerals.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report presents an overview of ground control considerations associated with floor heave. Factors affecting heave, such as in situ stress, floor characteristics, and mine geometry, are described. Floor-displacement monitoring and data analysis methods are outlined. Finally, floor heave remediation is discussed. The remedial techniques are divided into four categories: mine maintenance, supplemental support, mine structure, and techniques for multiple-seam operations. Other subjects covered in the report include laboratory and in-place testing of floor rocks, U.S. and international case studies, effects of mine layout, determination of excess horizontal pressure, and types of heave failure. The emphasis of this report is on practical considerations; theoretical discussions are kept to a minimum.

An important activity of the Bureau of Mines is the promotion of safety in mining and industry. As a part of this program, the Bureau determines the explosion hazards of combustible gases, vapors, and solids and investigates means of controlling and preventing explosions. The limits of inflammability (explosive limits) of combustibles are not only of theoretical but also of practical importance, because many industries at one time or another contend with explosive mixtures of combustible gases or vapors in their manufacturing processes. At present many new organic compounds are being manufactured, transported, and used in huge quantities which a few years a ago were only laboratory curiosities.

According to reports received by the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, as of Jamary 1, 1930, there were 1,035 natural-gasoline plants in the United States, with a total daily capacity of 10,516,000 gallons. (These data do not include one small plant in Alaska.) The last similar survey, that of Jamary 1, 1928, showed a total of 1,155 plants of 8,048,000 gallons daily capa- city. This in two years time the number of plants has decreased by 120, but the total capacity has increased 2,468,000 gallons or 31 per cent. This is roughly equivalent to the gain in production over the same periodi Over half of the increase in total capacity was registered in California, where the development of flush oil production having a comparatively high gas-oil ratio in such fields as Santa Fe Springs led to construction of some new plants and material enlargement of others. Of the total plants, 999 were operating on Jamary 1, 1930, and 36 were shut down. This compares with 1,060 operating and 95 shut down two years ago, which indicates a tendency to dismantle plants as soon as they become obsolete or umrofitable. The total daily capacity of the plants operating on Jamiary 1, 1930, amounted to 10,278,000 gallons, or 98 per cent of the total, leaving only 238,000 gallons, or 2 per cent, for the shut-down plants. This contrasts with the refining industry, which usually has 5 per cent of its total capacity idle; the difference is due to the relative ease with which a refiner can secure a crude supply as against the difficulty the natural gasoline manufacturer has in reestablishing his gas connections. During 1929 the average total daily capacity of the operating plants was 9,899,000 gallons, while the average daily production amounted to 6,015,000 gallons. This indicates that the plants operated during 1929 at 61 per cent of their capacity. Although over 60 plants were dismantled in Oklahoma during 1929 the State continued to rank first in total mumber. California was second in mumber of plants with 165, and was one of the few States that showed a gain since the

The Bureau of Mines investigated the extraction of alumina from calcined kaolin by leaching with boiling RCI in a train of three 50-gal continuous, stirred reactors. Slurry discharged from the reactors con-tained an excessive amount of fines, which impeded solid-liquid separation. Autogenous grinding of coarse solids that accumulated in the reactors was the source of the fines. This report describes modifications to the reactors and to the operations that led to decreased fines generation and improved solid-liquid separation. Modifications to the reactors included custom-made impellers, the addition of a baffle system, a subsurface slurry discharge system, and slower rotation of the impellers. Concurrent testing of a continuous horizontal belt filter showed that the form filtration rates were increased from 350 to almost 1,000 Ib/h+ ft-2 when the modified reactors were used.

As part of the Bureau of Mines program to develop substitutes for critical and strategic materials for metallurgical applications, the Tuscaloosa Research Center has evaluated the effect of additives and starting materials on the sintering and strength properties of sialon (silicon-aluminum-oxynitride) compositions fabricated by conventional pressing and sintering techniques. Sintering and MOR (modulus of rupture) data were developed for sialon compositions produced from three components, Si3N4, A1203, and AIN. When doped with Y203 to aid in sintering, the highest MOR values were obtained with compositions containing between 20 and 30 mole-pet (A1203 + AIN). The effect of the crystalline phase of the Si3N4 and Al203 used in the three-component system on MOR also was investigated. Alpha-Si3N4 and ?-A1203 were found to be the best starting materials. A sialon composed of 67.4 mole-pct a-Si3N4 plus 32.6 mole-pct (?-AI203 + AIN), doped with 5 wt pct Y203, had MOR values at 25°, 1,200°, and 1,400° C of 40,300, 40,300, and 31,100 psi, respectively. Samples of this composition doped with Gd203, MgO, Zr02, and ZrSi04 also were evaluated. The ZrSi04-doped sialon had higher MOR values than Gd203-, MgO-, and Zr02-doped materials but lower MOR values than the Y203-doped sialon. The MOR values of ZrSi04-doped sialons were 25,000 and 25,900 psi, respectively, at 25° and 1,400° C.

The rapid depletion of known high-grade ore deposits of the Tri-State district and the recognized need for development of additional reserves, together with increased interest in open-pit mining of low-grade zinc-lead ores led to Bureau of Mines examination of several abandoned mining areas for possible deposits adapted to strip mining. Examination of the North Empire tract in Cherokee County, suggested that mineralized zones contiguous to previously mined 2e deposits presented probabilities of meeting the requirements for an open-pit mine - hence the tract was selected for further investigation by churn drilling. The zinc-lead deposit on the property is in a sink-hole structure that has been subjected to intense deformation and silicification. Numerous shafts, mine dumps, and surface caves are evidences of exploitation of an extensive area. The reported active mining period was 1895 to 1905. No production records are available, but it is generally stated locally that the value of the mill products exceeded $2,000,000 which represents considerable production, considering the low metal prices of that epoch.
