The Torpedo copper mine in the Organ Mining, District, Dona Ana County, N. Mex., was discovered in 1899, and production of copper from oxidized-ore deposits was begun in 1900. Production continued through 1907, but operations were only intermittent frown 1907 through 1921. The production of copper during these periods amounted to about 3,500,000 pounds. Reserves primary sulfide copper ore were believed to occur below the old workings, and after a detailed examination of accessible workings and a study of drilling records of several private companies by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, a development program of diamond core drilling was initiated. This investigation was started October 3, 1949; and completed April 30, 1950. Four holes totaling 2,122.3 feet wore diamond-drilled, and 70 samples were analyzed. All drilling was done with a Government-owned hydraulic-feet drill having special rods and core barrels to increase the recovery of core in critical zones. This report describes the location, history, ore deposits, and factual data obtained by the Bureau of Mines from the drilling.

"Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy has been employed to· examine the role of tetraperoxochromate( V) ions (Cro:-) and other Cr(V) species in the generation of hydroxyl (OH) radicals in the reaction of Cr(VI) with H2O 2 in biological media. In contrast to earlier suggestions, the present ESR studies using crystalline K3CrO8 as a source of Cro:- show that decomposition of Cro:- in water or in H2O 2 does not generate significant amounts of OH radicals. Addition of NADH to a solution containing Cro:- yields a Cr(V)-NADH complex, which readily reacts with H2O 2 to generate OH radicals. Similar results obtained from several other biological reductants, including vitamin B2 , indicate that a vacant coordination site on a Cr(V) complex facilitates its reaction with H2O 2 to generate ""OH radicals. We thus suggest that in biological media, reaction [3] instead of [1] or [2] is the major pathway for the OH radical generation: While the carcinogenic potential of Cr(Vl)-based compounds has been well established via epidemiologic and animal studies (1), the underlying biochemical mechanism is still not well understood (2). In a recent development, however, Kawanishi et al. (3) have reported that hydroxyl (OH)2 radicals might be the key species in the mechanism of Cr(VI) toxicity. As to the mechanism of the ""OH radical formation they suggest that Cr(VI) reacts with cellular hydrogen peroxide (H2O 2) to form the tetraperoxochromate(V) (Crog-) ions, which decompose to produce hydroxyl radicals. It was also suggested (3) that the ""OH radicals thus produced cause genotoxicity via DNA base modification and deoxyribose phosphate backbone alterations. More recently Aiyar et al. (4) reported the detection of OH radicals in the reaction of Cr(VI) with H2O 2 in biological media, including the reaction of ""OH radicals with deoxyguanosine to generate 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine adducts, confirming that ""OH radicals could indeed play a significant role in the mechanism of Cr(VI) toxicity. However, the mechanism for the ""OH generation was not clarified, although the role of Crog- ions as possible precursors was mentioned, somewhat along the lines suggested by Kawanishi et al. (3). The possibility of the participation of Crog- in the ""OH generation has also been indicated by Sugiyama et al. (5), since they mention that vitamin B2 enhances the formation of""OH radicals in the reaction of Cr(VI) with H2O 2 because of the generation of Crog- in the reaction."

Alaska contains many critical and strategic minerals that are scarce in the conterminous United States. Among these are tin, tantalum, and columbium. This Bureau of Mines report summarizes available data on the production, reserves, and occurrences of these minerals in Alaska. Alaska produces about 200,000 lb of tin per year, with historical production since 1901 estimated to have totaled 5,830,600 lb. Measured, indicated, and inferred tin reserves total over 140,000,000 Ib. Much of the tin production has been from the placer mines of the western Seward Peninsula; however, most of the reserves are in that area's lode deposits. Alaskan tin occurrences are part of a belt of tin mineralization that extends along the western coast of North and South America. The Alaskan portion of this "tin belt" comprises placer occurrences and lode occurrences of five major types: greisen, vein, skarn, pegmatite, and volcanogenic massive sulfide. Greisen and vein occurrences are the most abundant, but skarn deposits have historically been the most economically important. Columbium and tantalum have not been produced in Alaska; however, they may be recoverable as byproducts of tin, tungsten, gold, or uranium mining. Approximately 135,000 Ib of columbium oxide (Cb205) are inferred within the Tofty placer deposits in the Manley Hot Springs district.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a portable meter for measuring the component concentrations in binary dust mixtures whose constituents have different optical reflectivities. The meter has been successfully tested with coal dust-rock dust mixtures taken from coal mines in Europe and the United States and fluorinated-carbon mixtures that change from carbon black to pure white during fluorination. Additional study has also substantiated the theoretical expressions used in the design of the meter.

"In the course of another investigation4 during 1926 and 1927, samples of water collected from a few abandoned coal mines indicated that their drainage was usually lower in acidity than water from active mines in the same locality. In order to determine whether this condition might have a bearing on the advisability of sealing abandoned mines, a number of such mines were visited, samples of drainage were collected, and as much information- as possible was obtained from officials of the mining companies and older residents of the district. The results of this work are the basis of the present report.The authors are indebted to E. W. Robertson, F. F. Spowart, J. H. Nagle, and W. D. Adams of the Northwest Mining & Exchange Co.; E. M. Sayers of the Bureau of Mines, under whose direction the work was conducted.The Lower Kittanning is the most important bed in the locality studied. A great many of the abandoned mines examined are in this bed, and nearly all of the present active ones are. The Upper Freeport bed is also mined to some extent, and a number of the abandoned mines formerly worked this bed. As only three active mines are now (1927) working the Upper Freeport, the comparison of acidities is necessarily limited. Of these three, one had been idle since 1922 until shortly before it was sampled.The location of most of the mines was already known from previous work, but some of them had to be located by following up streams known to contain acid waters. A sample of the- outflow was collected in self-sealing bottles known as ""citrate bottles"" for the determination of dissolved oxygen by the Winkler method.5 Another sample was taken for the determination of acidity according to standard methods of water analysis.6 Ferrous iron was determined at the mine or very soon after taking the sample by titrating with a standard solution of potassium permanganate in acid solution. The hydrogen-ion value was determined by a standard double-wedge comparator.7From the total acidity values in each sample, which are the most important values, the total iron was calculated on the assumption that acidity as sulphuric acid was due to dissolved ferrous sulphate. This assumption is commonly made for mine waters, but is inaccurate to the extent that free acid is already present, and some of the iron is present as ferric, rather than ferrous, sulphate. The amount of ferrous sulphate may be a rough measure of the extent to which oxygen is lacking within the mine. The permanganate titrations just mentioned showed what part of this total iron was in combination as ferrous sulphate, and the difference .was assumed to be that in combination as ferric sulphate, after correcting for the amount of free acid already formed as shown by the titration values."

Composite samples of nonmagnetic taconite from the western Mesabi range were evaluated by reductive roasting, fine grinding, and magnetic separation to determine potential sources of concentratable material. Although large tonnages of nonmagnetic taconite are known to occur in the western Mesabi district, these materials are not as yet a commercial source of iron ore. The technique employed permits the evaluation of individual composites and blocks of composites in terms of responsiveness to a process of potential commercial significance. The 159 composites, from open-pit mines located between Grand Rapids and Chisholm, Minn., were evaluated in the following sequence: 1. Minus 8-mesh material was roasted at 500° C. in hydrogen. 2. The roasted are was ground to one or more sizes in the minus 100-to minus 400-mesh range. 3. The roasted ground ore was magnetically separated in a Davis tube. 4. Composites were classified according to degree of grinding required to produce minimal concentrates. (Minimal concentrates are herein defined as those containing less than 10 percent silica, and responsive composites as those yielding minimal concentrates.)

"5.1 IntroductionTraditional impactors do not offer much size resolution for submicrometer particles; typically their finest size cut is around 0.4 µ.m. Yet for many aerosol applications it is useful to be able to size segregate aerosols in the size range below 0.4 µ.m. Diesel emissions, welding fumes, cigarette smokes and photochemically generated smog aerosols typically exhibit mass median diameters between 0.1 and 0.6 µ.m. When sampling these aerosols with a traditional impactor, fifty percent or more of the aerosol mass can penetrate the final impactor stage. Allhough the material can still be collected on a backup filter, the filter gives no size resolution. As a result, the investigator has no size information on a substantial portion of the sample. One needs a sampler that size-segregates the majority of the aerosol mass. A lower size cut of 0.1 µ.m or less is required for most combustion smokes and smog aerosol s.To obtain smaller cutpoints two types of impactors have been developed, namely low-pressure impactors and micro-orifice impactors. Both instruments can provide cutpoints as small as 0.05 µ.m. Low-pressure impactors were introduced more than twenty years ago (Stem et al., 1962), and a variety of these samplers are in use today. Micro-orifice impactors have been developed at the University of Minnesota within the last five years (Marple et al., 1981 ). To date theirs are the only examples of these instruments in use.5.2 Operating PrinciplesThe low-pressure and micro-orifice impactors use two different approaches to achieve their very small particle-size cuts. Low pressure impactors resemble ordinary impactors, but are operated at reduced pressures of 5-40 kPa (0.05 - 0.4 atm). They take advantage of the decreased aerodynamic drag on particles that occurs when the mean free path in the air is as large or larger than the particle diameter. Micro-orifice impactors operate at near atmospheric pressure, but employ very small orifices, 40 µ.m to 200 µ.m in diameter. The streamlines of the air impinging upon the impaction plate have correspondingly smaller radii of curvature; the air is accelerated more quickly, making it more difficult for the particles to follow. The report gives a review of the methods of predicting mine subsidence; these methods are used particularly in European coalfields. The methods are subdivided into two groups, based on mathematical expressions either for the trough profile or for the influence of infinitesimal extraction elements. The fundamental relationships common to all methods described herein are the principles of superposition and of equivalent extraction areas. The involved parameters are derived from field observations. For calculating horizontal displacements, their relation to the slope of the subsidence profile is applied. The time-dependent development of the subsidence process is characterized by the empirical "time factor." Modifications for the case of inclined strata are considered. A brief review of experimental and theoretical model investigations is given.

A superintendent is one who has the oversight and charge of some organiza- tion or enterprise, with porer of direction. The superintendent of a coal mine is the official who is in general charge of conducting the operation of the nine for the purpose of producing coal; he is accountable to his superiors for all matters that relate to the cost of production and safety in operation, ed under him are all the underground officials and other personnel making up the mine organization. The responsibility of the superintendent covers all the principal phases of mining, purchases of materials, issuance of supplies, accounting, and upkeep of the property and equipriont. In a broad sense, the superintendent must view his job as embraced under four gneral heads: (1) Construction, (2) instruction, (3) supervision; and (4) discipline. The degree of efficiency with which each of these phases of his work is conducted is a measure of the safety factor which the superintendent injects into his job. Injury to workmen and damage to property may be due to neglect of one of these general headings; as for example in the collapse of a scaffold there has been faulty construction which may be found upon investigation to have been the result of faulty instruction or lack of instruction. It may be that the condition of the scaffold was not ascertained in advance of its collapse through faulty supervision, or the discipline of the workmen had been neglected.

"The recovery or partial recovery of the oil remaining in oil sands after the usual methods of production have become unprofitable is perhaps the greatest problem in the petroleum industry today. The amount of this oil remaining in the sand is variously estimated by those familiar with the subject to be 25 to 90 per cent of the original content.2Lewis3 states, ""The estimate of 80 to 90 per cent of the oil left underground does not seem incredible.""It is estimated by the writer that approximately 91 per cent of the oil originally held in the Elliott pool, was still in the formation on January 1, 1924, and that it would take at least 12 years, at the 1923 rate of production, to further reduce this quantity by one per cent of the original content.The progress made in the oil industry during the past few years relative to the prevention of evaporation losses; to improvement in cracking processes, whereby the gasoline yield from many crudes has been doubled and trebled; to the increased recovery of gasoline from natural gas; and many other developments, remarkable as they are, can be applied only to that comparatively small portion of petroleum products which are raised to the surface. A device or process which would cut development costs to one-half would probably result in a much smaller profit to the oil industry, than the profit derived from an additional 10 per cent recovery of the total amount of oil in a pool. Various methods have been used and many others proposed, for the increase of oil recovery from normally depleted sands.In France, oil sands are being mined by means of shafts and galleries. In other places, notably the Bradford, Pennsylvania field, the yield has been increased by means of water flooding, wherein water is introduced into the sand to displace oil, and drive it to producing wells."

To develop a method for predicting the stability of a fuel during long-term storage from rapid aging tests at 200° F, the Bureau of Mines determined the stabilities of three gasoline base stocks and an alkylate blending stock in both sealed storage and aerated storage at 110° F for periods extending to 32 weeks. Stabilities of samples containing gasoline-additive compounds were compared by aging, using two methods--rapid aging in a bomb at 200° F for intervals up to 16 hours and storage at 110° F. The additives used were an uninhibited tetraethyllead motor mix, N,N'-di-sec-buty1-p-phenylenediamine and 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylpheno1. Results were related by graphs that enable predictions of gum and sediment formation during storage from data obtained in bomb tests. A premium-gasoline base stock and the alkylate proved to be stable, but the two regular-grade gasoline base stocks were found to be unstable. Addition of the diamine antioxidant improved the stability of both of the regular gasoline base stocks, while the phenol antioxidant improved only one of them. The presence of the tetraethyllead decreased the storage stability of all four fuels, both with respect to formation of gum and precipitation of inorganic sediment. The rapid test at 200° F appears to offer promise as a basis for a method of predicting gasoline stability in long-term 110° F storage.

"INTRODUCTION The Copper Flat area of the Central mining district, Grant County, N. Mex., has been visited by numerous engineers 4/ of the Bureau of Mines and geologists 5/ of the Federal Geological Survey. In December 1944 the Bureau. 6/ proposed that geophysical work be done in that area in order to locate favorable sites for future company exploratory and development work. This geo-physical work was begun early in 1945 but never fully completed because of insufficient funds. The engineers who made the survey recommended that more work be done, especially to locate the bottom of the Copper Flat laccolith by resistivity-depth surveys. All known minable zinc-lead ore bodies had been found above this laccolith in the Copper Flat mine, but it was thought that other minable ore deposits should occur in favorable limestones beneath it. The geophysicists also recommended core drilling beneath the laccolith.In the summer of 1946, following some mapping by S. G. Lasky of the Federal Geological Survey, funds were appropriated for a Bureau of Mines project in the Copper Flat area. The project was completed in June 1947. 8/"

The Bureau of Mines began its investigation of the use of Diesel engines underground to provide technical information necessary to assist this development in the United States. It was considered desirable to furnish such assistance because successful European developments/ in this. field had indicated that Diesel mine locomotives might be safer than electric trolley locomotives. The Bureau has recognized for some time the importance of eliminating the hazards associated with underground haulage systems using bare trolley wires. For example, each year 30 to 40 fatalities occur as a result of electrocution by contact with bare trolley wires. In 1943 and 1944, 101 men were killed and extensive property damage occurred as a result of mine fires started by falls of roof grounding the bare trolley wires.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines performed batch equilibrium contact experiments to examine the ability of activated coconut-shell carbon to adsorb various metal cyanide complexes. Tests were also conducted to determine the effect these cyanide complex impurities might have on the adsorption of gold by the activated carbon. Metal cyanide species included in the investigation were antimony, arsenic, cadmium, calcium, cobalt, gold, iron, mercury, nickel, silver, thallium, and zinc. Tests were made over a pH range of 6.4 to 12.5. The carbon exhibited a preference for gold adsorption over other metals present in solution. In the absence of gold, the metal cyanide complexes were adsorbed; adsorption generally decreased with increasing pH. However, calcium and thallium adsorptions increased with increasing pH, while arsenic and iron were not adsorbed at any pH.

The oil fields of Arkansas, all situated in the southern part of the State, have played an important part in the development of petroleum production in the northern coastal plain region of the Mid-Continent area. From the first discovery of oil in southwest Ouachita County in 1920 to December 31, 1930, a total of 480,167,5604/ barrels of crude petroleum has been produced from' this region. Development of the Arkansas fields proceeded rapidly after 1920. The El Dorado field was discovered in Union County in 1921. Drilling in Ouachita County resulted in the discovery of the Smackover field in 1922 and subsequently in the development of the whole southern area. To November 31, 1938, 6,4595/ producing wells had been drilled in 25 fields, aggregating 53,7356/ acres of proved territory in 6 counties. Peak annual production for the State was reached in 1925, when 80,823,7007/ barrels was produced, resulting largely from flush production from the Smackover field, which rose td an average of 444,9508/ barrel daily during that year. "The use of diesel equipment in underground coal mines is controversial because ""whole diesel exhaust"" is regarded as ""a potential occupational carcinogen"" by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Threshold limit values (TLVs) are recommended for the gaseous pollutants; CO, CO2, NO, NO2, SO2, and some hydrocarbons emitted in diesel exhaust. There is, however, no TLV recommended for diesel exhaust aerosols (DEA) nor is there a standard method for sampling these aerosols.The University of Minnesota and the Bureau of Mines have collaborated to develop a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler (PDEAS) which utilizes size selective, inertial impaction and gravimetric analysis. During the field tests of this sampler, numerous air quality measurements were conducted in underground coal mines using diesel equipment. The objective of this report is to present these data and to assess the impact of diesel face haulage equipment on mine air quality.Air quality data were collected in four underground coal mines using continuous mining methods with diesel haulage equipment. Daily samples were collected at the section intake, haulageway, and on haulage vehicles. Both full-and partial-shift samples were collected using a variety of aerosol instruments, including the PDEAS and the micro-orifice, uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI) which sample the mine aerosol diesel exhaust fraction. Two of the mines were also monitored for the major gaseous constituents found in diesel exhaust CO, CO2, NO, NO2, and SO2. These measurements were made by either collecting bag samples for subsequent gas analysis or by Palmes dosimeters.The concentrations of CO, CO2, NO, NO2, and SO2, were well below regulated levels. The mine average DEA concentration determined by the PDEAS in the haulageway for the three mines surveyed using this instrument was 0.79 mg/m3, with a standard deviation of 0.19 mg/m3. DEA contributed 65% of the respirable aerosol, at this location. These results were the same as the mean DEA concentrations calculated from size distribution measurements obtained using the MOUDI. This was 0.78 mg/m3, with a standard deviation of 0.22 mg/m3."

Australia is tightening its rules governing mineral processing and the purchase of rural land by foreign investors" Rural land purchasers in the future will have to demonstrate to the Foreign Investment Review Board, the applicable governing body, that they will introduce new techniques or developments that will benefit Australia. In mineral processing, the criterion will be the availability of maximum opportunities for Australian equity capital. The changes are designed to discourage absentee landlords and speculators from abroad. A diamond field discovered several years ago in the northern section of Western Australia, known as the Kimberley region, is now thought to be one of the largest in the world, according to Conzinc Riotinto of Australia Ltd. (CRA). Figures released late in 1981 by CRA indicate that the main orebody of at least 100 million metric tons contains possibly 500 million carats of diamonds with a conservative market value of $8 billion. The diamond stones in the 100-acre deposit are about 10% gem-quality, 30% near gem, and 60% industrial. Initial production is expected to be about 17 million carats annually, which could be expanded to 25 million carats annually. World production of natural diamonds has been about 40 million carats per year from a reserve base of about 700 million carats.

The Bureau of Mines developed equations to determine the relationship of yields and products obtained from BM-AGA carbonization in 13-and l8-inch-diameter retorts. The developed equations indicate that results of carbonization in l8-inch-diameter retorts can be predicted from results obtained with l3-inch-diameter retorts.

The Bureau of Mines was created in 1910 largely to determine methods of preventing coal-mine explosions; the Bureau's studies have proved that coal dust, except possibly that of some grates of anthracite, can initiate an explosion in the absence of gas and that its ability to extend or propagate an explosion of either gas or dust has been responsible for nearly all of the widespread explosions that have taken place in bituminous and other nonanthracite mines in the United States in the present century. It is believed by many persons that all atmospheric dusts may be harmful if breathed in large enough quantities for long enough time; bituminous coal dust is generally considered to be essentially harmless physiologically, yet there is abundant evidence of definite damage from inhalation of bituminous dust mixed or unmixed with the dust of other materials. Attention un¬questionably should be given to allaying dust in bituminous mines, especially at principal dust-producing sources. This publication enumerates some of the sources of dust and describes practical methods of employing water as one of the most effective of the known methods to allay dust in bituminous mines.
