This report describes the preparation characteristics of the signifi¬cant coalbeds in Preston County, W. Va. It is one in a series of reports planned to determine coals suitable for the production of metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. Over 2 million tons of coal was produced in Preston County, W. Va. in 190, none of which was cleaned mechanically. Estimates as of January 1, 1959, indicate that more than 3 billion tons of coal remained in the county in beds 12 inches or more thick. The Bakerstown, Mahoning, Upper Freeport, and Upper Kittanning beds were selected by the Bureau of Mines for study based on current production and estimated minable reserves. Sample locations were selected after study of the literature, conferences with mining engineers and mining company offi¬cials in the field, and examination of available sites. Four samples were collected from the Bakerstown and Upper Freeport beds and one each from the Mahoning and Upper Kittanning beds.

The Bureau of Mines equipped a longwall shearer with a water-jet-assisted mechanical cutting system to determine the effect of the high-pressure sprays on machine performance, airborne dust levels generated, and size of particles formed. Testing was conducted on a simu-lated coal block (coalcrete) while cutting at a water pressure of 190 psi and at water-jet-assisted pressures ranging from 1,000 to 6,000 psi. The shearer motor energy used by the shearer while cutting coalcrete was determined for each cutting condition. Results indicate that the motor energy required by the shearer for each ton of material cut did not vary significantly as the water pressure was increased. Results of dust measurements recorded near the cutting drum indicate that at water pressures above 3,000 psi, dust reductions up to 85 pct were achieved com-pared with cutting with conventional sprays. Analysis of the particle size distribution during cutting showed that increasing the water pres-sure resulted in increased median particle size. In light of these results, various mechanisms for water-jet-assisted cutting are discussed.

This paper summarizes precent knowledge of the ignition qualities of pure hydrocarbons likely to be present in modern Diesel engine fuels, as shown by an extensive search of the technical literature. The report also discusses the possible significance of cetane number and hydrocarbon struc- ture. Cetane or cetene numbers, and other physical properties, are tabu- lated for about 100 hydrocarbons, and a bibliography is appended. In recent years the Diesel engine has enjoyed increasing popularity due to its dependability, inherent characteristics of fuel economy, and the fact that it operates on a fuel that hitherto has been available in comparatively large quantities at a low price. These qualities have en- abled the compression-ignition engine to compete very favorably with other types of prime movers in many fields and have led to predictions of fur- ther rapid expansion in the application of Diesel power. In a survey of the field of all petroleum fuels for combustion engines, Holaday et al (9) have predicted that by 1948 railroads will be using 10 times as much Diesel fuel as was used in 1939 and that over-all consumption will have doubled that of 1939. Other estimates of the yearly demand for Diesel fuels five years hence vary from 2,6 to 5 times the amount used in 1944. Into this picture has come the question of whether the greatly in- creased production to meet this estimated demand is compatible with the maintenance and possible improvement in quality of fuels necessary to satisfy future engines. Unfortunately perhaps for the Diesel engine, factors other than those of simple arithmetical multiplication must be considered. For example, the consumption of oil in central heating plants doubled from 1935 to 1943, and a further increase of 57 percent of the 1943 demand is expected by 1950. Jet propulsion has been developed to the stage where it is entirely practical for military aircraft. Catalytic cracking plants, many of which were constructed to meet the war- time accelerated demand for high-octane gasoline, are taking their place in the refining industry. All these developments, as well as the Diesel engine, require material of approximately the same boiling range. Virgin gas oils make excellent burner fuels, perform most satisfactorily in the gas-turbine units for aircraft according to present information, and are at a premium as catalytic cracking stock.

Thirty-seven blasts have been monitored using either three or four seismographs, at four coal strip mines and at a limestone quarry. Statistical analysis of the data shows that square-root, cube-root, and site-specific scaling methods predict peak particle velocities with about the same (low) degree of reliability. Some mines have peak particle velocities that are significantly lower or higher than the U.S. Bureau of Mines averages (Siskind et al., 1980). This suggests that the option provided by the proposed regulations (Office of Surface Mining, 1983), to adjust blast designs based on site-specific measurements could be highly beneficial both to operators and to the public. The frequency spectra reveal that the predominant frequencies were generally less than 50 Hz but several blasts had a significant amount of energy up to 125 Hz. In some cases the vibration energy was concentrated at frequencies corresponding to the delay intervals.

An ever-increasing demand for beryllium and beryllium alloys has directed attention to the milling of low-grade domestic deposits as a possible means of supplying part of the Nation's ore requirements. The United States generally produces less than 10 percent of its annual supply. For example, new supply in 1953 was estimated at about 9,250 tons, of which the United States imported 8,500 tons. Domestic production was only 750 tons.2/ Since record high prices for beryl in 1952 and 1953 did not greatly increase domestic product ion, the United States must develop mechanical beneficiation processes to use low-grade deposits and reduce dependence on foreign sources

Chromite has been produced commercially for slightly more than a century. Developed, at one time, chiefly as a chemical pigment raw material, it has subsequently found extensive application in other chemical industries - as a refractory material for furnace linings and as the sole source of the metal chromium. For some years prior to 1914, its use as a refractory predominated; but post-war development in alloy steels, principally stainless steels, enhanced the metallurgical demand in the form of ferrochrome with a consequent increase in the demand for chromite. More recently direct reduction of chromite in alloy-steel manufacture has been applied to a limited extent. Alloy steels containing varying amounts of chromium, with or without other alloying elements, now find extensive use in a ride variety of ways - in structural material, machines, industrial equipment transportation by land, sea, and air, sanitary equipment, food preservation, and a multitude of other uses. "SUMMARYFor making a comparison of magnetic surveys measured from the ground and from the air, Worcester County, Maryland, was chosen as a proving ground. Vertical magnetic intensities were observed on the ground, and total magnetic intensities were observed from the air. A comparison of the two magnetic maps reveals similar large magnetic features, but these are displaced in some instances by distances greater than a mile. Magnetic terrane in the two charts is of the same type but often differs greatly in respective characteristic features.The sacrifices in accuracy that may be expected from the use of different systems of diurnal magnetic corrections on ground observations constitute a part of this report.INTRODUCTIONThe value of magnetic surveys for gaining information concerning the crystalline basement is recognized increasingly. That this topography is often reflected to a major degree in the overlying sediments with certain offsetting is well understood. Even where such sediments are deep, the surface topography of upper formations often reflects this bedrock topography to a certain degree."

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYThe Guymard mine in Orange County, N. Y., is reported to have been discovered in 1862 and mined until 1876, producing 10,000 tons of lead and zinc ore. 2/The property was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines 3/ in 1948. Development work was done by the Bureau in April and May 1949 and March 1950. During these two periods four drill holes totaling 2,090 feet were completed. Seals are barriers constructed in underground coal mines throughout the United States to isolate abandoned mining panels or groups of panels from the active workings. Historically, mining regulations required seals to withstand a 140-kPa (20-psig) explosion pressure. However, the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (“MINER Act”) requires the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to increase this design standard by the end of 2007. This report provides a sound scientific and engineering justification to recommend a three-tiered explosion pressure design criterion for new seals in coal mines in response to the MINER Act. Much of the information contained in this report also applies to existing seals. Engineers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) examined seal design criteria and practices used in the United States, Europe, and Australia and then classified seals into their various applications. Next, the engineers considered various kinds of explosive atmospheres that can accumulate within sealed areas and used thermodynamic calculations and simple gas explosion models to estimate worst-case explosion pressures that could impact seals. Three design pressure-time curves were developed for the dynamic structural analysis of new seals under the conditions in which those seals may be used: unmonitored seals where there is a possibility of methane-air detonation or high-pressure nonreactive shock waves and their reflections behind the seal; unmonitored seals with little likelihood of detonation or high-pressure nonreactive shock waves and their reflections; and monitored seals where the amount of potentially explosive methane-air is strictly limited and controlled. Figure 1 is a simple flowchart that illustrates the key decisions in choosing between the monitored or unmonitored seal design approaches and the three design pressure-time curves. For the first condition, an unmonitored seal with an explosion run-up length of more than 50 m (165 ft), the possibility of detonation or high-pressure nonreactive shock waves and their reflections exists. The recommended design pressure-time curve rises to 4.4 MPa (640 psig) and then falls to the 800-kPa (120-psig) constant volume (CV) explosion overpressure. For unmonitored seals with an explosion run-up length of less than 50 m (165 ft), the possibility of detonation or high-pressure nonreactive shock waves and their reflections is less likely. A less severe design pressure-time curve that simply rises to the 800-kPa (120-psig) CV explosion overpressure may be employed. For monitored seals, engineers can use a 345-kPa (50-psig) design pressure-time curve if monitoring can ensure that (1) the maximum length of explosive mix behind a seal does not exceed 5 m (16 ft) and (2) the volume of explosive mix does not exceed 40% of the total sealed volume. Use of this 345-kPa (50-psig) design pressure-time curve requires monitoring and active management of the sealed area atmosphere. These design pressure-time curves apply to new seal design and construction.

Methane emission from two surface gob-degasification boreholes was measured by the Bureau of Mines. The investigation took place during mining of a 3,200-foot longwall panel in the Lower Kittanning coalbed in central Pennsylvania. The first hole was 500 feet from the start of mining, and the second hole was 2,200 feet. The first hole went on natural draft as soon as the longwall face passed it. This caused the methane flow in the return entries to drop 75 pct. In the 6 months required to complete the panel, the two holes emitted 69 MMcf of methane in varying percentages of concentration in air. In 3 years, the holes emitted a total of 150 MMcf of methane.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory studies to determine the feasibility of chlorine-oxygen leaching for treating low-grade zinc sul-fide flotation concentrates. Recovery of zinc sulfides by flotation from complex fine-grained sulfide ores is substantially higher in low-grade bulk sulfide concentrates than in the high-grade cleaned concen-trates required for smelter feed. However, there is no commercial process in the United States for the treatment of low-grade bulk zinc sul-fide concentrates. Leaching experiments using reactors of 500-mL and I-gal capacity were conducted on a bulk concentrate containing 19.3 pct Zn, 35.6 pct Fe, and 39.4 pct S. The effects of pressure, temperature, and percent solids on extraction were investigated. The chlorine-oxygen leaching procedure showed promise for treating the concentrates. Zinc extractions of 95 pct or more were obtained by leaching at 50 pct solids in the temperature range of 1000 to 1200 C. Zinc extractions by leaching with chlorine followed by oxygen at reactor pressures of 50 to 100 psig were independent of pressure.

As part of its overall program of coal-carbonization research, the Bureau of Mines is studying the coking properties of coals from various fields of this country. Few of the coals included in this survey are used for the manufacture of metallurgical coke, although some well-known coking coals necessarily are tested to provide comparative data, particularly on blending properties. The overall objectives of the study were given in detail in a previous report.3/ The inherent suitability of coal for metallurgical purposes, as distinguished from economic considerations, depends primarily on (1) the available reserves, (2) chemical composition, (3) preparation characteristics, and (4) carbonization behavior. These items are considered in selecting coal for carbonization tests.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated a teleoperated continuous mining machine for deep mining in thin-seam applications as low as 1 m. Teleoperation increases the safety of mining machine operators because it removes the operator from the face, an area of immediate hazards to safer outby locations. By using teleoperation, the miner can avoid many including unexpected roof falls that can maim or kill miners instantly, methane and coal dust explosions that can be ignited with just a small spark or flame, adverse health effects from miners breathing coal and silica dust, adverse long-term inner ear damage from loud noise pollution, and other hazards related to heavy mining equipment moving about in confined underground roadways. This report presents the surface evaluation results of a teleoperated control system.

The production and processing of crude petroleum and natural gas are the dominant economic sectors of the Middle East. Development of downstream petrochemical and fertilizer industries continues as a major investment area. In 1993, the 15 countries that constituted the region accounted for 29 % of world crude petroleum output, 19 % of world natural gas plant liquid production, and 6 % of world dry natural gas production. Only Cyprus and Lebanon were not crude petroleum producers. Regional output was up for most major mineral commodities. A major exception was phosphate rock, which declined sharply owing to reduced worldwide demand. Total crude petroleum output declined by over 100 Mbbls, again owing to slack demand in the major industrial countries.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, cooperated with Tecrete Industries Pty. Ltd. and BHP Australia Coal in a research program to evaluate the strength characteristics and air leakage of four seal and two stopping designs for use in underground coal mines. A fundamental safety research area for NIOSH is to eliminate the occurrence of coal mine explosions or to mitigate their effects. One approach to achieve this goal is to develop new and innovative seal designs that provide increased explosion isolation protection for the mining personnel against ignitions that originate from within the gob or. other worked-out areas of the mine Full-scale seals and stoppings were constructed in the Experimental Mine at Lake Lynn Laboratory near Fairchance, Fayette County, PA. They were ail--leakage tested, then subjected to a series of explosions with average pressure pulses ranging from 25 to 500 kPa (3.5 to 72 psi). Instrumentation measured seal displacement and acceleration as a function of time, providing data to assist in the development of numerical models 1'01- future seal design. All three seals designed with Meshblock wire forlnwo~-k ant1 a lnonolithic shotcrete core withstood the first explosion test, which generated an avcr-age rnaximu~n pressure of - 140 kPa (-20 psi) while maintaining acceptable air leakage rates. These seals I-anged from 175 to 325 mm thick. They included a 2.7-m-high by 325-mm-thick seal that was tesled 27 hr after completion against this - 140-kPa explosion pressure, a special requirement of the test program. This seal survived explosions with pressure pulses up to 300 kPa (43 psi). The 2.3-m-high by 325-mm-thick Meshblock seal survived three explosion tests with overpressures up to 455 kPa (66 psi) and satisfied the air leakage criteria. A I ,200-mm-thick plug seal was constructed of two Gunmesh formwork walls in-filled with shotcrete and a 3,450-kPa (500-psi) strength Aquablend core. This plug seal survived three explosions with pressure pulses ranging 11-om 150 lo 430 kPa (-22 to 62.5 psi) with no measurable postexplosion air leakage. Two Gunmesh stoppings with thicknesses 01' 40 and 75 inln withstood explosion overpressures of 23 and 115 kPa, respectively. Anchoring all seal and stopping designs into the roof, ribs, and floor with steel "rootbolts" provided very effective boundary constraint that is critical to the performanceofstructures subject to explosion overpressures.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the mineralogy, tonnage, and beneficiating characteristics of oxidized (nonmagnetic) taconite iron resources of the Western Mesabi Range as part of its program to insure adequate future domestic mineral supplies. Magnetic taconite currently provides about 95 pct of Mesabi production, but the large tonnages of oxidized taconite between the magnetic deposits will be needed to help meet future domestic demand for iron ore. Three bulk samples that represent large tonnages from the Western Mesabi Range were selected to determine their mineral composition and liberation by light optical microscopy and to test their beneficiating response. This report describes the mineralogy and liberation characteristics of the three samples of the Biwabik Iron-Formation for 26.5 mi (42.7 kID) from Keewatin to Grand Rapids, MN. (Details of response to beneficia-tion were reported previously.) The samples represent mostly material from the Lower Cherty Member of the Biwabik-Iron Formation, although one sample included some Upper Cherty Member. Minerals of all three samples were quartz (chert), hematite, goethite, and minor to trace amounts of magnetite, iron carbonate, and iron silicates. It was concluded that the oxidized taconites of the Western Mesabi Range represent a subeconomic indicated resource that can be selectively mined and beneficiated as a future large source of iron feed for steelmaking.

Columbium metal was electrorefined in a fused - salt electrolyte . Excellent results were obtained in lowering the impurity content in a 94 - percent columbium anode feed material to produce a 99.8- percent - pure metal . The reductions of the major impurities follow : Oxygen from 19,800 to 500 ppm , carbon from 9,700 to 25 ppm , iron from 9,200 to 630 ppm , nitrogen from 2,100 to 90 ppm , and silicon from 750 ppm to not detected . Columbium with a purity of 99.9 percent was produced from 99.5- and 99.8 - percent grades of columbium. The investigation was devoted to the evaluation of a fused - fluoride - salt electrolyte ( KF - NaF- K₂ CbF, ) for electrorefining columbium. The effects of the columbium concentration and the voltage upon the product's purity were investigated . The effect on the cathode current efficiency of ampere - hours of deposition and the formation of a dual valence state of the columbium was also investigated .

This report on the properties of burner-fuel oils produced during 1956 was issued under a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, at the request of the Oil-Heat Institute of America and the petroleum industry. This survey is the second for this type of fuel, the first being made in 1955. 2/ The surveys are conducted to provide information on the characteristics of burner-fuel oils now manufactured for sale. They are similar in pattern to the diesel-fuel surveys, conducted since 1950, 3/ and are not intended to conflict with but rather to supplement them. The importance of fuel oil has resulted in the need for more information by the petroleum industry, manufacturers of heating appliances, and consumers regarding the types and qualities of the fuels currently being marketed. Samples of burner-fuel oil typical of their manufacture during the early part of 1956 were analyzed by the refiners in accordance with instructions from the subcommittee on fuel surveys of the Automotive Research Committee of the American Petroleum Institute, Results of the analyses were transmitted to the Bureau of Mines where the data were studied and compiled as shown in the tables of this report.
