The United States Bureau of Mines has made a study of roof control in 68 mines operating in the Pittsburgh coal bed in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio. In making these studies, much information was also obtained on various exact methods of development and pillar extraction as practiced by this large group of mines. It is proposed in this paper to describe these methods, by which this group of mines in 1931, a year of reduced industrial activity, produced 28,123,000 tons of bituminous coal - 7.4 percent of the national production for the same year and an amount equal to the combined production of the coal mired in the States of Alabama, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. The results of these studies, insofar as they pertain to the prevention of injuries from falls of roof, have been published by the Bureau of Mines. In this paper only a few mines typical of each system will be described; however, should the reader be interested in other details with respect to these mines, he may refer to the following publications: T.P. 522, 1932, 43 pp. Falls of roof and coal in mines operating in the Pittsburgh coal bed in Marion and Monongalia Counties, W. The Bureau of Mines has extended its previous development of cast Mn-Cu damping alloys to powder metallurgy (P/M) consolidation of alloys containing 55 to 75 wt-pct Mn. Blends of minus 200-mesh elemental powders were compacted cold in directional and isostatic presses. With 1 pct binder, typical green densities ranged between 76 and 80 pct of theoretical when pressing at 30 or 48 tsi. Green strength increased with compacting pressure and copper content. As-sintered tensile strengths ranged to 60,000 psi fox a hydrogen, sintered 60Mn-40Cu alloy, along with 5-pct elongation. Sintered densities ranged between 90 and 96 pct of theoretical. Sintering (a as effective when holding for 1 hr at maximum temperatures of 900° to 1,040` C, dependent on composition. Strength and ductility were considerably lower than for equiva¬lent cast alloys. When aged to the damping condition, alloys containing 60 to 70 pct Mn exhibited >40 pct specific damping capacity (SDC) at 5,000-psi stress, considerably higher than values reported for equivalent cast material. Effects of 1 or 3 pct Sn or Zn additions on SDC and other properties were assessed. Trials were conducted on consolidating rings and gears of the 65Mn-35Cu alloy on industrial-type P/M equipment.

Centrifugal model embankments with varying geometries and materials were constructed of- coal waste material, accelerated From 100 to 120 times earth's gravity, and subjected to various throughflow rates until failure occurred. Complementary laboratory tests were performed on the waste materials to obtain strength and permeability parameters for analytical calculations to predict observed centrifugal model behavior. Failures in the form of deep.-seated failure, or erosion and sediment transport or a combination of both, occurred in model embankments with 1V:1-1/2H and 1V:2H slopes when the phreatic surface due to seepage exited on the downstream slope: Positive seepage control, i.e., a toe drain successfully prevented sloughing and failures. Slope stability analyses agreed well, albeit conservatively, with observed model performance. Factors of safety ranged from 0.7 to 1.02 at the instant of failure for models with retrogressing slips as compared with 1.05 to 1.7 for stable embankments, These models verified existing criteria of a minimum safety factor of 1 3 and the necessity of positive seepage control.

This report (rind related Appendices) provides a description of the functional design specifications and related rationale for development of a training system for dragline equipment operators. Phase I activities involved a delineation and detailed analysis of specific behavioral requirements for successful dragline operation. Following the field data collection effort, job/activity/task descriptions were formulated into training requirements which can be achieved by a trainee with training hardware having specific functional capabilities. The training system analysis integrated the training requirements and the trainer functional capabilities into recommendations which configure a total training system. The objective of the training system described in this report is to provide new operators of dragline equipment with the requisite skills and knowledge to assure cost-effective development and an adequate supply of our human resources.

The Bureau of Mines conducted batch-?scale tests on a sample of parphyry copper mill tailings as part of a study to determine the feasibility of rutile recovery from this source. The tailings that were tested contained 0.75 percent titanium dioxide (Ti02), with about two-thirds of the Ti02 values occurring as rutile. Mineralogical studies indicated that about one-half of the Ti02 content could be considered recoverable. Beneficiation studies of the tailings showed that best flotation results were obtained when sulfides and carbonates were removed by bulk flotation prior to rutile flotation. Rutile flotation was most effective when a petroleum sulfonate collector was used in an acid circuit. From this basic method of flotation, two alternative procedures were developed. The first procedure was to size and grind the tailings to minus 200 mesh; deslime the total pulp; and then float the sulfides, carbonates, and rutile. The second procedure was the same, except that it did not include sizing and grinding. Flotation of the sized and ground tailings yielded rutile concentrates containing 43.1 percent Ti02 and 75.7 percent of the recoverable Ti02. Rutile concentrates floated from the tailings that were deslimed but not ground contained only 34.7 percent Ti02 and 69.4 percent of the recoverable Ti02.

Thermodynamics data for silicates have applications in the fields of extractive metallurgy, ceramics, and geochemistry. To facilitate these applications, up-to-date tables of heats and free energies of formation are needed. It is the purpose of this report to supply such tables for anhydrous silicates. During the last 15 years the heats of formation of a substantial number of anhydrous silicates have been reliably determined at or near room temperature. This resulted from the development (first by the Bureau of Mines and later by the Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, by the Institute of Geology of the University of Helsinki, Finland, and by the Department of Geology of the University of Chicago) of accurate solution calorimeters, employing hydrofluoric acid as the reaction medium. Specific references to work of these laboratories will be made in the next section of this report. Also, entropy data at 298.150 K. and high-temperature heat-content values are available for many of these silicates, mainly owing to work of the Bureau of Mines. Most of these entropy and heat-content data have been compiled in Bureau of Mines Bulletins (13, 15).3

This report summarizes the results of the Narragansett Win Projec't's activities during the U.S. Bureau of Mines (BOM) Phase 1, which was transitional from and which followed the National Science Foundation (NSF) Phase which initiated the investigation of New England's potential roil resource. The 960 sq. mile basin is structural and topographic lowland containing 12,000 to 20,000 ft. of terrigenous clastic sediments of late Pennsylvanian age, and which rests on an upper Precambrian and Cambrian basement. The Rhode Island Formation, which is the coal-bearing unit, comprising the bulk of the Pennsylvanian rocks consists, in order of decreasing abundance, of sandstone, conglomerate, silts tone, shale, and coal. In the NSF Phase, 24 drill-holes yielded 17,900 ft, of core; in the BOM Phase I study, 4 drillholes yielded 2,100 ft. of core. Anthracite and semi-anthracite was encountered in beds Up to 30 ft. thick in widely spaced parts of the Basin. The coal, typically very low in sulfur, and a high ash anthracite, won mined in substantial volumes from 1808 to 1959 from shaft and open lit in Portsmouth and Cranston, R.I., and in lesser volumes in Mansfield, Mass. Currently coal is now being mined in Plainville, Mass. as a fuel in the manufacturing of light-weight aggregate from the same quarry that serves as the source of the rock being processed. The structurally complex Narragansett Basin is now known to have a greater extent than earlier since recent drilling by others (Chapter 2) has confirmed our interpretation that the Basin extended offshore south A Boston. The, Basin also extends into Rhode Island Sound to the south. The geological structure is more complex in the southern part of the Basin than in the northern part. Three episodes of folding have been documented on Aquidneck Island and four episodes of faulting have been demonstrated for the Basin as a whole. Relatively less well exposed rock in the northern part of the Basin, increases the difficulty of recognizing and correlating structural episodes in the northern part of the Basin. The Basin his hewn subdivided into six structural domains which appear to have distinctive structural, metamorphic, paleontological and sedimentological differences that mw assist in isolating important events in the evolution of the Basin and its component parts. The tentative structural model recently developed in POP Phase I has important implications for exploration and mining. In the first and second folding stages the coal is mobilized and thickened in the crests and troughs of folds whose axes are horizontal to subhorizontal. While conventional coal exploration and mining methods are not applicable, great thickening in the crests and troughs of large scale structures, which can he defined by geology, geophysics and drilling, may provide compensating advantages. Bedrock over most of the Basin is 0-50 ft., but thicknesses of glacial deposits up to 150 ft. are present locally. Pro-Pleistocene topographic trends are controlled by structure and rock hardness; Pleistocene deposits aligned to the S. F. are superimposed on earlier trends. The southern part of the Basin is mainly dominated by high grade Barrovian metamorphism and plutonism of Permian age, related to the Alleghanian Orogeny. About 300 sq. miles of the 960 sq. mile Basin has been affected. The remaining 660 sq. miles, in the chlorite and subchlorite zones of metamorphism are compatible with the presence of high quality anthracite and semi-anthracite. Illite crystallinity studies begun in the NSF Phase, have been carried out in the BOM Phase l with important results. About ME of the northern Basin is now known to be in the diagenetic (unmetamorphosed) or subchlorite zone and the remainder in the chlorite zone of metamorphism. Mite studies, probably best recording temperature effects, show a generally progressive increase from the NW corner of the Basin near Plainville, Mass. toward the south and southeast. Reflectivity and coal petrography studies, probably best recording pressure and effects related to shearing, indicate a generally opposite pattern. Thus these methods provide powerful tools for the ultimate solution of problems important to coal exploration for coals of higher combustible volatile content and exploitation of these. Due to the complex nature of the coal, chemical data may not he easily used to determine rank. The coals have been tectonically deformed and mineralized. This deformation plus thermal metamorphism have altered the coals, in some cases by producing natural coke. Brecciated coal is often coated with a secondary depositional carbon. The coals' hydroscopic nature and high ash contents are due to the deformed nature of the coal and the presence of this secondary carbon. The stratigraphy and sedimentology of the coal-bearing Rhode Island Formation is similar to described alluvial fan deposits. The non-geological studies al-low three conclusions to be made: 1. A substantial number of areas have been identified in the Narragansett Basin in which mining could be carried out without undue difficulty from a land use point of view. 2. Substantially more than two hundred instances of past or current- mining activities have been identified in the Basin. Many of those are in areas defined as geologically interesting, and may be advantageous From the point of view of future exploration. 3. The map synthesis technique developed for this contract is successful and may easily be adapted to future exploration in its current form and also in its expandable form dealing with unit measurements of one-tenth mile. We recommend that BOM Phase 2 exploration should accomplish the intent of the Congressional language in House Report No. 95-1251, to continue a substantial drilling and geophysics program: "The Committee expects the Bureau to continue studies involved in ascertaining the extent and quality of low sulfur coal reserves in the Narragansett Basin in New England including necessary drilling and geophysical studies. The knowledge of the extent of such deposits is of great importance to this 'energy pour' area".

The purpose of this investigation was to develop methods, on a laboratory scale, for recovering tin from Bolivian metallurgical slimes. Petrographic and chemical analyses were made of slime ore fractions from several well-known tin operations. High percentages of the total tin were volatilized as chlorides at temperatures below 600° C. Under optimum conditions reaction rates were relatively rapid, and the chloridizing reaction approached completion. Owing to the low temperatures involved and the high yields of tin, the process was considered to have possibilities for treating Bolivian slimes on a commercial basis. Southeastern reserves of titanium ores are large, widespread, and ample for anticipated demand. The leading titanium industries are mining and beneficiating sand deposits, principally in Florida, and manufacturing titanium pigments. Most of the mineral output is consumed by the producers themselves. In 1962, 20 percent of the national pigment capacity was in the Southeast.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed an alternative electrochemical process for the production of calcium metal. The current industrial practice is costly, complex, and inefficient. The Bureau method involved electrowinning of a calcium-tin alloy followed by electrorefining to produce calcium metal. In the electrowinning cell, CaCI2 was fed to a KCI2-CaCI2 electrolyte. The calcium was electrowon at 6500 C into the pure molten tin cathode until the cathode contained 7.5 wt pct Ca. Current efficiency for electrowinning averaged over 90 pct. The resulting calcium-tin alloy served as the anode for the electrorefming cell, which employed a [CaC~-CaF2] fused salt as the electrolyte. Calcium metal was electrorefmed at 8500 C with a current efficiency of 85 pct based on calcium metal recovered. The calcium metal analyzed 99.2 pct, which is purer than commercially produced calcium.

No minerals have been produced from the McGraw Creek RARE II area. During the 1982 U.S. Bureau of Mines study, there were no active mines in the area. Limestone occurrences (fig. 1, no. 2), four copper prospects (fig. 1, no. 1, 4, 5, 6), and a prospect with no significant mineral values (fig. 1, no. 3) were examined. A moderate potential for high-calcium limestone resources was estimated between ocurrences within the study area near McGraw and Spring Creeks (fig. 1, no. 2). There is low potential for copper resources at the Argenta Prospect (fig. 1., no. 1) in the study area, and the McDougall Prospect adjacent to the area.

"INTRODUCTION In a previous report3 prepared for the American Gas Association, the influence of washing coal on coke properties and on gas and by-product yields was discussed on the basis of answers to questionnaires sent to coke-oven superintendents and a review of the literature on the subject. This review indicated that the elimination of free impurities by cleaning coal improved coke quality by (a) reducing ash and sulphur, (b) decreasing clinker trouble in burning the coke, (c) diminishing cross fractures in the coke, resulting in greater resistance to breakage on handling, and less small coke and breeze, and (d) greater uniformity in chemical composition and physical properties of coke. Washing also reduced the sulphur in coke and gas and increased the yield of gas and by-products per ton of dry coal charged.This paper is supplementary to the previous report and presents some experimental data obtained with Pittsburgh bed coal from Pennsylvania and Mary Lee bed coal from Alabama.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSGrateful acknowledgment is made to F. Isometric strength is defined as the capacity to produce force or torque with a voluntary isometric (muscle[s] maintain[s] a constant length) contraction. The key thing to understand about this type of contraction and strength measurement is that no body movement occurs during the measurement period. The tested person's body angles and posture remain the same throughout the test. Isometric strength has historically been the type most studied and measured. It is probably the easiest to measure and to understand. Some strength researchers feel that isometric strength data may be difficult to apply to some "real life" situations because in most real circumstances people are moving - they are not static. Other researchers counter that it is equally difficult to determine the speed of movement of a person or group of persons doing a job (each moves in his or her unique manner and speed across the links and joints of the body). Thus, dynamic strength test data collected on persons moving at a different speed and/or in a different posture from the "real world" condition will be just as hard to apply. In truth, neither is better - they are different measurements. Both researchers and users should collect and use data that they understand and that fits their application. Workplace Assessment When a worker is called on to perform a physically demanding lifting task, the external load produces moments - tendencies to produce motion, also called torques - about various joints of the body.(1) Often these moments are augmented by the force of gravity acting on the mass of various body segments. For example, in a biceps curl exercise, the moment produced by the forearm flexors must counteract the moment of the weight held in the hands as well as the moment caused by gravity acting on the forearm's center of mass. To perform the task successfully, the muscles responsible for moving the joint must develop a greater moment than the combined moments of the external load and body segment. It should be clear that, at each joint of the body, there is a limit to the strength that the muscle can produce to move ever-increasing external loads. This concept forms the basis of isometric muscle strength prediction modeling.(1) The following procedures are generally used with this biomechanical analysis technique. First, workers are observed (and usually photographed or video-taped) as they perform physically demanding tasks. For each task the posture of the torso and the extremities are documented at the time of peak exertion. The postures are then re-created using a computerized software package, which calculates the load moments produced at various joints of the body as the task is performed. The values obtained during this analysis are then compared to population norms for isometric strength obtained from a population of industrial workers. This report presents the results of a task to complete a final design of a remote controlled hi-roof bolting machine for high roof areas in coal mines. The project was begun by visiting several coal mines to become familiar with roof fall areas. Several machine concepts were generated and presented to the design committee for criticism. A preliminary design was completed, as covered by this report. A Final Design and Final Report will be issued incorporating the committee comments at the Preliminary Design review and comments received concerning this Preliminary Design Report.

Approach Include in the wireless system a portable second-generation transceiver that is more reliable, compact, easier to deploy and operate, and ruggedized to withstand a mine environment. How It Works In an emergency, the new transceiver is snapped onto a caplamp battery for power. (Normally the 1 1/2-pound transceiver is either carried by the miner or is strategically located in the mine.) Its antenna wire, coiled inside the transceiver container, is removed and deployed in a roughly square configuration around a coal pillar or on the mine floor. This report presents preliminary results of a study undertaken to investigate quantitative characteristics of the demand for steel mill products and its major end-use components. The major end uses included in the study are the steel mill products used in construction, in automobiles, in producer durables, and in consumer durables. The main objectives of the research underlying this study are as follows: (1) To formulate and estimate the empirical demand relations for steel and the four major end uses in the United States; (2) to measure and calculate the responsiveness of the U.S. per capita steel consumption with respect to the changes of the steel and other nonferrous metals prices; (3) to determine and quantify the relative importance of the underlying demand explanatory factors in contributing to the average year-to-year increases (or decreases) of the U.S. per capita steel consumption; and (4) to adapt and use the estimated demand relations in making projections of the U.S. future demand for steel and the major end-use components. After extensive preliminary investigation, three versions of simple linear demand relations are selected and estimated by means of ordinary least squares (OLS) method. The annual data for the period 1947-65 are used in the estimation. Direct and cross price elasticities of demand are computed for each of major end uses. The relative importance of demand explanatory factors in contributing to the average year-to-year changes of U.S. per capita steel consumption are also calculated. For making projections, a simple autoregressive time trend model is used in estimating the future values of independent variables. Since the estimated demand relations are valid for projections only if the estimated parameters can be assumed to be unchanged in the future, and consequently, the projections derived in the study should be interpreted accordingly.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions 5/ issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

As part of its mission to maintain an adequate supply of minerals to meet national needs and maximize mineral production from domestic sources, the Bureau of Mines is investigating the recovery of alumina by hydrochloric acid leaching of kaolinitic clay. Most iron impurities are leached from the clay along with the alumina and must be removed before or during crystallization to aluminum chloride hexahydrate. The thermal decomposition step then provides an alumina product of acceptable iron analysis. Miniplant studies of a Bureau-developed solvent extraction technique, using a tertiary amine in kerosene diluent, have demonstrated that the iron content in aluminum chloride leach liquors can be reduced to levels of less than 0.007 wt-pct (7 ppm), expressed as Fe203. Entrained and dissolved organic matter in the purified pregnant leach liquor from the solvent extraction circuit can be reduced to less than 2 ppm by using a fabric-packed coalescer and subsequent activated carbon treatment. Investigators discovered that a steady buildup of zinc accumulated in the solvent phase within the extraction circuit, proportional to the amount of leach liquor treated. The solvent phase zinc analysis increased by 0.01 wt-pct ZnO for each 1,000 gal of pregnant leach liquor purified.
