The Mouat mine, Nye, Mont., was reopened in 1953 by the American Chrome Co. under a Defense Minerals Production Administration contract. Operations were terminated in 1961 after completion of the contract. Mining methods employed during this period are described in detail, and cost data are presented by years for 1953 through 1959. Ultramafic rocks of the Stillwater complex in Montana contain the largest domestic resource of chromite, and the Mouat mine has been the largest producer. Mine reserves were estimated in 1960 to be about 4.4 million tons containing 22.5 percent Cr203. The chromite deposits occur as a series of overlapping bands or lenses roughly paralleling the steeply dipping layers of the complex. Only two of the chromite layers have proven to be of economic importance. One layer is 2 to 1.6 feet wide; the other is 3 to 8 feet wide. Shrinkage stoping was generally used throughout the mine, but various methods of ore breaking, scope drawing, chute construction, etc., were tested to improve output and lower costs. Long-hole stoping proved to have limited use. Breasting down benches, developed outward from the center of the stope with air-leg drills, was satisfactory only in wider scopes. At the close of operations, the company had standardized the use of lightweight stopers to advance a flat back by breaking from a centrally located face. Mining costs were reduced 47 percent during 7 years of operation.

It is estimated that well over 20 million lb of chromium and 8 million lb of nickel, plus other metal values, are diverted annually to furnace dusts, mill scale, and contaminated swarfs in the domestic stainless and other specialty steelmaking industry. Little inroad has been made toward the in-plant recycling of these wastes to reclaim the metal values. The Bureau of Mines has devised a process for recovering about 90 pct of the chromium and molybdenum and well over 90 pct of the nickel and iron from stainless steelmaking furnace dusts, swarf, and mill scale. Other metals such as manganese are also recovered. Initial laboratory results were confirmed and expanded to include a wide variation of stainless steelmaking waste mixtures. Later experiments have included specialty steelmaking wastes other than from stainless steelmaking. Significantly, the ease of technology transfer has been demonstrated by a number of industrial-sized (19-ton) commercial electric furnace heats, in which the pelletized wastes represented some 10 to 20 pct of the furnace charge, replacing part of the normal scrap charge. Results of these successful large-scale trials are presented. Some information is also presented on incorporation into the pellets of chromium-bearing particulate wastes originating from other than steelmaking production. Cost evaluation indicates the process is economically attractive.

As part of its research on advanced mining technology, the U.S. Bureau of Mines emphasizes studies on in situ leach mining. This research enables the Bureau to develop technical information that can allow mining companies to adopt in situ leach mining methods. Research results should help to remove the technical and economic barriers currently hindering the development of commercial in situ leach mining operations. This report contains papers summarizing results of Bureau research on various aspects of in situ leach mining. A featured topic is the cooperative field experiment of the Bureau and Santa Cruz Joint Venture in a copper deposit near Casa Grande, AZ. Discussions in-clude an overview of the entire project, cost modeling, environmental permitting, laboratory core-leaching experiments, petrographic studies, and an evaluation of the geologic structure in the region. In addition, papers describe hydrologic modeling and geophysical studies of solution flow during leaching. Preliminary geochemical modeling studies are also summarized. A final paper describes a nonionic chemical additive with potential for significantly reducing the high costs of drilling in in situ leach mining.

MINFO has been developed to serve as a frontend for three databases created to store basic minerals information gathered during the minerals resource assessment conducted by U.S. Bureau of Mines(USBM) for the Malheur and Jordan resource areas of southeastern Oregon(MJRA). The primary database is the Minerals Location Inventory (MLI.DBF) which contains of information assembled from field work performed during this project, the USBM Minerals Availability System/Mineral Information Location System(MAS/MILS) database, the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral lndustries(DOGAMT) Mineral Information Location(MILOC) database, and the U.S. (Geological Survey(USGS) Mineral Resource Database System(MRDS), In addition, assay results are contained in the geochemical database (ELEMENTS.DBF) and modified X-ray diffraction analysis information is contained in the minerals database (MINOR.M.DBF). MINFO includes four types of program modules: ? Enter/Edit Data was developed to allow the addition of new information and to encourage correction of errors by providing a convenient means of entering and editing data and a large degree of automatic checking and filtering of entries. ? ACAD/DBF Link links each site symbol posted on the map in the drawing file to a record in the database. This provides the user with the ability to use a mouse or other pointing device to graphically select a site for viewing and editing. Edits are performed directly in the database file, ? Reports contains 7 formats of data output for creating files for printing, transfer to other database formats, and exporting to other software packages such as spreadsheets and word processing programs. ? Maps includes 5 programs for creating AutoCAD script files which can be used to create maps of selected information in conjunction with AutoCAD. Mineral location mapping files derived from MLI.DBF can be created in 2 formats. Mapping files can be generated from each of the 2 sets of geochemical analyses contained in ELEMENTS.DBF. X-ray diffraction analyses can also be translated into instructions for creating and posting piecharts at sampling sites.

This paper describes studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines to achieve its goal of developing methods for increased recovery and utilization of valuable constituents in a wide variety of domestic and industrial wastes, In this particular study, 36 units of obsolete electronic equipment from military aircraft were disassembled into their modular components by hand to determine materials distribution. Further modular disassembly into individual parts was used to identify metal composition. After identifying the metals in some of the more difficult to dismantle modules, similar modules were grouped together, shredded, mechanically separated, and using metal composition data from hand separation, classified along with the hand-separated materials. Although this equipment is normally classified as law-value iron-bearing aluminum, data were obtained that indicated the potential for moderately higher value classification. The electronic units were classified as to precious metals, copper, iron, and aluminum contents, and scrap values were estimated.

The W. E. Dunkle mine, sometimes called the Costello Creek coal mine, is 8 miles N. 20° W. of Colorado Station on the Alaska Railroad. The presence of coal in this area has been known since the district was extensively prospected for gold between 1911 and 1915. At that time, coal from this deposit was used by miners for blacksmithing. The increased demand for coal resulting from government defense projects in Alaska led to exploitation of this deposit in 1941. The inability of Alaska coal mines to supply the quantity of coal required by public and private consumers and by the armed forces in Alaska was responsible for establishment by the Army of the Coal Procurement Section of its Alaska Department. It proposed to investigate the deposits and to expedite production from the Alaskan coal fields. The Bureau of Mines closely cooperated in this program. The quality of the Dunkle coal and the favorable location of the deposit caused it to be one of the properties chosen for investigation under a joint Army-Bureau of Mines-Geological Survey program.

Direct mass spectrometric determination of alcohols in the presence of hydrocarbons has not been possible because of the similarity of hydrocarbon and alcohol mass spectra. Experiments have demonstrated that by converting the alcohols to their trimethylsilyl derivatives, characteristic mass spectra are obtained free of interference from hydrocarbon ion fragmentation. Hexa- methyldisilazane is the reagent selected for the conversion, An improved method of preparing the reagent is given, Mass spectrometric determination of alcohols as trimethylsilyl ethers now is not only possible without prior separation from other materials, but the range of the room-temperature mass spectrometer is also extended to include the C10 alcohol region. Water does not interfere because it is converted to hexamethyldisiloxane, which has its own distinctive mass spectral peak, Experience indicates that other compounds such as glycols, amines, and phenols probably could also be determined by mass spectrometry of their trimethylsilyl ethers. Studies on the similar detemination of phenols in coal oils have been started, When mass spectrometry is not available, gas-liquid chromatography of alcohols before and after their conversion to the trimethylsilyl derivatives probably could be performed. The preparation and properties of the trimethylsilyl derivatives of 23 alcohols, 2 glycols, 3 amines, and 1 mercaptan are detailed. INRODUCTION During investigations by the Bureau of Mines at the Pittsburgh Coal Research Center relative to the development of Fischer-Tropsch processes, complications were encountered in the mass spectrometric analysis of alcohols in hydrocarbon oils. There were no significant changes in the mineral industries of the smaller Caribbean Islands during 1980. Imported petroleum requirements continued to erode economic gains that may have occurred in other sectors. Some relief may be forthcoming as more qualified Caribbean countries take advantage of Trinidad and Tobago's petroleum product financing program (see Trinidad and Tobago). There were no crude oil discoveries in these areas during 1980, although some geophysical testing around the British Virgin Islands and Antigua war underway. In March 1980, the Government of Antigua sold a 75% interest in the 16,000-barrel- per-day West Indies Oil Co. refinery to the Swiss Intermaritime Bank and Intermaritime Management Services for $6 million. The new refinery company is called the National Petroleum Co. Shutdown since 1976, it was originally planned for the refinery to reopen in 1980, but refurbishing has proved to be more extensive than anticipated. The reopening is now expected in 1981.

Water availability is essential for mining and minerals processing. To provide government and industry with recent data for water use planning and management, the Bureau of Mines canvassed a number of U.S. producers of nonfuel minerals to determine their water use in 1984. Data were analyzed and compared with previously published data in order to examine historical trends in water utilization in the nonfuel minerals industry and to estimate water requirements in the year 2000. Total water use in the domestic nonfuel minerals industry during 1984 was estimated at 2,267 billion gal, of which 571 billion gal was new water and 1,696 billion gal recirculated water. The largest users of water were the phosphate rock, iron ore, copper, sand and gravel, and crushed stone industries, together accounting for almost 90% of total used. More than one-half of all water was used in Florida, Michigan, and Minnesota. In the year 2000, total water use will amount to an estimated 2,679 billion gal, of which 810 billion gal will be new water and 1,869 billion gal recirculated water. The overall purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate, in the laboratory, instrumentation and procedures which might allow for the use of physical measurements of earmuff attenuation which would yield results equivalent to those obtained from psychophysical measures of attenuation. The ultimate goal was to evaluate techniques which might subsequently prove feasible for physical measurement of earmuff attenuation in the field. Current instruments were modified to have a response similar to differrences observed in earmuff attenuation as observed in Volume 1 of the current contract. Mining noise spectra were selected and presented to a single subject seated in a diffuse noise field. The subject wore one of the muffs evaluated in the earlier study and was also fitted with two physical sound measurement systems. A linear system measured the "outside" noise level and a linear system plus "correction" filter measured the "in-side" noise level. These measurements indicated that, under the procedures presented in this report, a laboratory method for measuring earmuff attenuation is feasible and yields results comparable to an extensive psycho-physical procedure.

The Deep Creek zinc and lead mine afforded an excellent example of a relatively small underground mine operation that approached the low mining costs of large, highly mechanized mines, An open stope mining method incorporating sublevel benches and vertical long holes was used (fig. 1). Detailed descriptions are given on the exploration program, stope development, stoping procedures, and pillar removal. Pressure grouting was used to check the inflow of water and thus prolong the life of the mine. Statistics on mining costs and on electric power consumption, haulage from mine to mill, and milling costs are included.

The Bureau of Mines examined and tested the rhodonite deposits of the Silverton lead-zinc district, San Juan County, Colo., as a possible source of domestic manganese. Exploration and development work by several mining companies and preliminary reconnaissance of the area by Bureau of Mines engineers indicated the presence of extensive manganese resources in the form of rhodonite. This report summarizes the results of laboratory beneficiation tests made on samples of different type and grade material obtained from surface and underground exposures of seven veins in the district. Surface and underground examinations revealed the presence of several prominent veins that could be traced up to 2 miles for a single vein along the surface. The principal veins average about 50 feet in width and apparently carry rhodonite to considerable depth. Underground samples were taken from the Sunnyside, Silver Queen, Washington, Independence, and Scotia veins. Samples also were taken from surface exposures of the Sunnyside Extension and Hidden Treasure veins.

This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rim. Also included are tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of Volume I and in the State chapters of Volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is normally termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

The applications of optical spectrochemical methods of analysis for determining trace impurities in metals are described, and the need for developing analytical procedures capable of accurately determining fractional parts per million of impurity elements in metals is stressed. Factors which determine sensitivity of detection and means to extend sensitivity levels in spectrochemical methods are discussed. Examples from the current literature illustrate the diversity of spectrochemical techniques that have been applied to the analyses of varied sample types, Many of the methods use preconcentration procedures to increase sensitivity limits. Optical spectrochemical analysis is based upon the measurement of radiant energy emitted by atoms of the elements to be determined when a sample is subjected to a suitable source of excitation. The behavior of the valence electrons during excitation, usually by an arc, spark, or flame, produces radiant energy of specific wavelengths. This is recorded as spectral line images on a photographic film or plate by the spectrograph; for direct-reading instruments, the spectral lines are detected with photomultiplier tubes. The spectral lines result from the excitation of atoms in the sample. Each variety of atom produces its own characteristic set of lines, thus serving to identify the elements in the sample. Increased concentrations of elements in the excited sample results in increased blackening of the spectral line images.

Ten proposed processes for the recovery of manganese from domestic resources as a high-grade oxide product are described. Nine of the processes employ sulfur dioxide, sulfuric acid, or a combination of both for leaching. The tenth process utilizes sulfur dioxide to sulfatize the ore at 600° to 850°C before water leaching. In addiction to these ten complete processes, six processes from the patent literature are described. Methods for receovering MnSO4?H2O are also reviewed.

Rock property tests were performed on NX-size diamond drill core from the roof, floor, and coal from the longwall mining section of Federal No. 2 mine, West Virginia. The purpose of these tests was to determine the engineering properties of the various strata as part of a ground control study of the longwall operation. The following tests were performed: 1. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed a computer program called the Air Quantity Estimator (AQE). The purpose of the program is to provide a starting point for estimating the air quantity needed to dilute diesel particulate matter (DPM) in an underground large opening mine, albeit taking into account various input assumptions. The AQE estimates the total air quantity needed to dilute DPM emissions that enter the main airstream of the mine to current statutory levels. It helps operators pinpoint vehicles that are high DPM contributors. In addition, it allows the user to make “what if” scenarios by varying the input parameters to achieve the most efficient and practical ventilation system. The AQE is a stand-alone software program that does not require any type of spreadsheet software. Engine data must be known or estimated with some accuracy and assumptions must be made in order to limit the variability of the program output. Program calculations and two case studies, for validation purposes, are included in this report. It should be noted that the program does not ensure adequate face ventilation and personal exposure compliance.
