Blasting techniques, which have been used for a long time in Turkey, are powerful and economical tool in producing raw material in mining, quarrying, construction .etc. industries. The development of the society within the world has resulted in a substantial increase in the scale of such industrial projects. However, the expansion of such activity has been matched by an increased public awareness of environmental issues, particularly when it occurs in relatively close proximity to residential areas. One of the most troublesome issues facing the mining, quarrying and construction industries when carrying out their blasting activities is that of ground vibration. Because, blasting induced ground vibration can reach to very far distances from the source and has the potential for damage to concern to the inhabitants of property.

For proper blast design, one must make the assumption that all blastholes release nearly ideal energy. In many types of blasting operations, blastholes release very little useful energy. These blastholes are called malfunctioning blastholes. Recent studies indicate that as many as 30 percent of all blastholes are malfunctioning. These malfunctioning blastholes are not an unusual occurrence.

Progressive cavity type pumps are widely used by commercial explosive manufacturers for pumping water gel, emulsion and emulsion / ANFO blend explosives. Tests by explosives companies and investigations into incidents have shown that this type of pump can develop dangerously high temperatures when operated deadheaded or dry. [i.e. with no flow of product through the pump.] In some tests and incidents, explosion or detonation of the explosive (or residual explosive) in the pump has resulted.

This paper describes a method of evaluating shot performance through the use of available mine- data. The mine had already been monitoring the following parameters for other purposes: drill penetration rates, shovel loading rates, crusher throughput, crusher power and crusher hangups. By assigning pit coordinates to these factors, maps showing the location of difficult and favorable blasting are as are identified. Products and techniques are compared by the same method.

The Brisbane City Council has implemented a program of continual improvement at its Mount Coot-tha Quarry in the heart of Brisbane, Australia. The program has been underway for the past 6 years, and has resulted in very significant improvements in terms of both the cost effectiveness of its operation, and in terms of its environmental impact on nearby residents. The work has included a focus, amongst other things, on blasting efficiency, and has challenged conventional thinking in terms of the size of blasts fired, the frequency of firing, the diameter of blastholes, and the use of bulk emulsion or slurry explosives.

In 1989, Les Entreprises Kiewit Ltee signed a C$32 million contract with the Societe d'energie de la Baie James, on behalf of HydroQuebec, to excavate the intake and tailrace channels for a second powerhouse at the LO-2A James Bay hydroelectric project. The multistage contract included removing three marine rock plugs. The first plug was blasted in April 1990. It was a 43 yards wide, triangular shaped wedge that projected into 18 yards of water. Located at the mouth of the intake channel, it contained over 72,000 yd3 of rock, more than twice the 30,000 yd3 found in most rock plugs.

Sinkhole development in karst terrains is a serious problem and risk to facilities built in these areas. The potential for sinkholes are a function of many things including the chemistry of the underlying rock, the location of water conductive fractures and fissures in the rock, the natural fluctuation of the ground water table, vibrations from various sources and surface regrading activities. When sinkhole open near quarry operations the occurrence of these features is occasionally attributed to vibrations from quarry blasting. The purpose of this paper is to review the evidence regarding the development of sinkholes as a result of quarry blasting. In general, it has been found that sinkholes result from collapse or piping of overburden soils into cavities or caverns developed within underlying carbonate rocks that have been in existence for many thousands of years. The overburden soils in karst areas are typically clayey and as a result are not subject to densification or liquefaction as a result of vibrations. The primary cause of an increased rate of sinkhole development can be attributed to changes in the ground water table or local surface water drainage. These changes may be caused by seasonal fluctuations, ground water level lowering in drought periods, dewatering of excavations or quarries, or local changes in surface drainage resulting from grading activities.

In situ, most Taconite is heavily pre-fractured; because of the high cost of comminution of taconite, maximum fracture of pre-existing blocks is desirable. Sustained borehole pressure plays a significant role in fragmentation, especially by penetrating pre-existing fractures. The distribution of explosive-induced energy in the burden in three dimensions was calculated. Data on the comminution of single particles was used, with the distribution of energies and the distribution of pre-existing block sizes, to calculate fragmentation for a case study. The calculation agreed well with the measured fragmentation. Sequential comminution events are much more efficient than single ones, and enhanced fragmentation may be possible with alternative blasting practices. Some important factors in the dependence of comminution on energy input are discussed.

Previous work in which rock properties and blasting parameters (geometry, charging and timing) were reported together with truck filling times, is taken as a starting point for a thorough analysis of the influence of the former on the mucking velocity. The experimental set was composed by 11 blasts made in an open pit mine. Non-parametric, distribution-free statistics is applied. The mucking rates (in bank cubic meters per unit of bucket volume and per hour) appear to be clearly dependent on the explosive energy and powder factor, both magnitudes combined as energetic powder factor (energy per unit of rock volume). The mucking rate is a non-monotonic function of such factor in the range of the blasts analyzed. The determination of the function is optimum when the fraction of the explosive below grade is not considered and when the explosive energy is qualified as that delivered at a partial detonation regime. Different types of loaders seem appropriate for different energy levels. At low levels both front loaders and rope shovels obtain small productivities without a statistically significant difference in their performance. At high energy levels, front loaders qualify higher than rope shovels. Mucking velocities can be equally small at low energy powder factors and at high ones if rope shovels are involved.

This paper discusses recent changes to the emulsion blend blasting agent used at the Drummond Pribbenow Mine in Colombia, one of the world’s largest open pit coal mines, and the resulting improvements in rock breakage and excavator productivity. Based on field evaluations, the use of High Density Ammonium Nitrate (HDAN) can be effectively implemented in an emulsion blend blasting agent, yielding excellent results in terms of energy release, shelf life and velocity of detonation (VOD). Field evaluations showed that formulations using HDAN exceed the performance of the actual 50%/50% emulsion/ANFO blend using Porous Prill Ammonium Nitrate (PPAN). PPAN is conventionally used for emulsion blend manufacturing, with physical characteristics to facilitate sensitivity during the detonation process.

Many controversies and differences of opinion exist in blasting technology. The primer location in small diameter dynamite columns is an example of one of these controversial areas. It is generally agreed that in rotation firing of small diameter blastholes, primer placement near the bottom of the borehole is beneficial since it reduces the likelihood of cutoffs. The controversy results in the actual location of the primer in the bottom of the blasthole. Some references indicate that the primer cartridge should be the first cartridge in the bottom of the hole, with the cap pointed toward the collar of the hole. Others indicate that performance is improved with no sacrifice in safety by placing a tamped cartridge first in the hole, and the second cartridge being the primer. The following investigation provides some factual data for consideration.

Jointing of steel rods in reinforced concrete structures needs careful consideration as it renders the structure weak at the joint. The jointing is usually done at sections of structural members, where the bending moment and shear force are least. Jointing is done either by overlapping the rods or welding or by mechanical splicing. A novel method of jointing them is by inserting the two rods in a steel sleeve and cladding it on to the rods by subjecting the sleeve to explosive energy. A rod jointed in this fashion is tested for direct tension and bending when used in a reinforced concrete beam. The test results show that it is an effective method. The advantage is that a number of joints can be made in a single operation.

Abstract: Rough set theory (RS) can find useful information from a large number of data and generate decision rules without prior knowledge. Support vector machines (SVM) have good classification performances and good capabilities of fault-tolerance and generalization. To effectively control blasting vibration effect, prediction model of blasting vibration parameters based on rough sets and support vector machines are established. Particle swarm algorithm (PS) is used to dynamically discretize attributes. Then, according to the optimal particle calculated by the PS algorithm, the decision table is established. After eliminating less importance attributes and data, then SVM is trained and established for prediction. The model can deal with both quantitative and qualitative factors such as aperture and cast direction, and analyze their importance to peak vibration acceleration value. The improvement of prediction accuracy is verified by testing data.

The first seismograph was developed around 132 AD. Much has happened since then. The “modern” seismograph (> 1920) has seen a lot of changes. From falling pin seismographs to magnetic tape units to today’s Z-curve analysis models, the blasting seismograph remains a necessary and useful tool to the blasting community. But why so many changes? What forces drive the advancement of the seismograph? There are many answers and aspects to this question. Research, regulation, and technological advances are the primary forces behind innovation in our industry. But these three forces also drive each other. Research drove our industry from displacement seismographs to particle velocity seismographs. Technology took us from 80 pound seismographs to units weighing less than 5 pounds. Regulation (and litigation) - the driving forces behind the Z-curve analysis units. How have these innovations helped today’s blaster? Have there been any negatives? It is important for today’s blaster to understand how we got here and why.

The main purpose of this study was to apply the artificial neural network (ANN) models to determine optimal powder factors and predict peak particle velocities, based on a series of observations and input parameters. The used blasthole pattern was V-cut. The locations of blastholes and ignition patterns remained almost constant. The input parameters were 14 geological conditions (i.e., dip, dip direction, spacing, separation, and persistence of 2 discontinuity sets, tunnel orientation, rock strength, RQD, and RMR) and 4 blasting conditions (i.e., distance between blasting points and measuring points, charge weight per delay, drilling length, and blasting efficiency). Data for the ANN application in this study were recently collected in a highway tunnel under construction in Korea. The main rock type in the site was biotitic granite. An optimum ANN model was determined by training models with collected data. The trained model was used to evaluate the prediction capability of the optimum model. It was shown that the ANN model could predict the powder factor and the peak particle velocity depended upon the selected input parameters. Particularly, the ANN model predicted more accurate peak particle velocities than those obtained by the blasting vibration equation. Moreover, the more dominant factors among the input parameters could be determined by analysis of the relative strength effect.

The aim of this study was to understand clearly how VOD of emulsion-based gassed explosives is influenced by parameters such as nitrate salt composition in the oxidizing phase, product density, blend composition, gassing rate, type of sensitization, etc. Also some VOD testing was performed on watergel-based gassed explosives in order to compare the results with those obtained for emulsions. VOD measurements were conducted in the surface blasting facility at the Research and Development laboratory of ENAEX SA (Calama, Chile). Despite the fact that the influences of some parameters on VOD of emulsion-based gassed explosives are easily predicted, there was found to be an unexpected correlation. Although it is commonly believed that the VOD of gassed explosives depends on the density, this study found that the VOD depends on the both size and the amount of gas bubbles incorporated into the product as well as type of sensitisation, regardless of whether the explosive was straight emulsion or a blend. Density is just a consequence of the incorporation of voids into the explosive. Future work in this area may examine variation of other parameters, in order to obtain a greater knowledge of detonation properties and therefore to design more efficient explosives.

Concrete is a common construction material used throughout the world, and with increasing demand of fast-track construction, blasting and concrete casting are occurring simultaneously at many sites where rock is being excavated for concrete placement. However, there has been significant disagreement in the construction industry as to what intensity of shock vibrations green, or fresh concrete can tolerate. Peak particle velocities are often arbitrarily chosen, or are simply based on materials such as plaster and drywall that have been more thoroughly studied in relation to damage. Previous research on green concrete has used the concrete’s static strength subjected to shockwaves at different ages as the primary damage criteria. In addition, the static strength tests have been based on curing time. However, changes in temperature or humidity can dramatically alter the hydration rate, which affects strength development of different cements. To account for temperature changes and humidity the concept of concrete maturity is commonly used and allows the researcher to see where the concrete was in terms of hydration progress. In general, static testing determines the failure stress that the concrete’s macrostructure can handle, and often failure occurs in the natural materials first or along large defects in casting techniques. Dynamic testing or high strain rate testing, on the other hand, loads materials at such a high rate that larger defects do not have time to react and instead the microstructure is more highly stressed leading to higher strength and stiffness values. This is known as the material’s strain rate sensitivity. Since dynamic testing better tests the microstructural strength, it is believed that it may provide a better way to assess damage to green concrete. Testing includes both static and dynamic compression as well as static and dynamic splitting tensile strength to assess whether damaged has occurred to the concrete. No significant statistical evidence was discovered that damage to the concrete occurred at five different “green” maturities from peak resultant velocities ranging from 10.66 in/s (271mm/s) to 4.40 in/s (112 mm/s) with average intensity of 6.7 in/s (170mm/s).
