"A weathering-crust niobium-rare earth-bearing deposit is formed by the weathering alterationof alkaline granite, which is refractory due to its low grade and complex properties. The mineralogicalcomposition of ore, the grain size of majorminerals as well as the occurrence of Nb and REE are studied in this paper using MLA combined with traditional methods. According to the results, a wide range of Nb-Ti-REE compound minerals including titanoniobite, uranpyrochlore, chlopinite, samarskite and ilmenorutile areformed for the extensive isomorphous substitution among the elements of Nb, Ta, REE, Fe, Ti, U and Th. The occurrence of REE is extremely complex. First, the REEexistingas rare earth minerals including monazite, xenotime, bastnaesite,etcaccount for 21%. Second, the REEexist in the lattice of Nb and Zr minerals as isomorphous additions, which account for 18%. Third, the REE exist as colloidal rare earthdeposit,which account for 35%. Last, the REEexistingas ion-adsorption-type rare earth,which are adsorbedon the kaolinite in the form of hydrated hydroxyl ions, account for 26%.Based on the results of mineralogy, the combined technology process "mineral processing- hydrometallurgical separation" is needed to deal with the ore. The mineral processing tests show that, for the feed ore containing Nb2O5 0.065%, REO 0.13%, an Nb-REE concentrate containing Nb2O5 1.38%, REO 1.98% can be gained by "high intensity magnetic separation-regrinding-gravity separation by shaking tables". The recovery of Nb2O5 and REO is 62.42% and 44.78% respectively. The Nb-REE concentrate is dealt by the metallurgy process "direct reduction- acid leaching & acidulating- neutralization & precipitation- chlorination & distillation" and the rare earth oxide of 92.34% REO as well as the Nb-Zr oxide of 24.62% Nb2O5 can be obtained with the recovery of REO and Nb2O5 being 76.83% and 59.37% respectively."

Reverse flotation is usually used for hematite/silica or bauxite/clay flotation separation in which the silica or clay is floated and rejected. Some properties of these silicate minerals such as particle size and surface characteristics have significant effect on their flotation behaviours. Firstly, the silicate mineral particles (especially clay minerals) generally have fine particle size (< 5 microns) in their natural states or due to overgrinding and they display poor flotation kinetics, consequently having low flotation recovery. Secondly, the wettability difference on different particle basal planes influences the affinity for adsorptions of different types of chemicals such as collectors or macro-molecule. Common polyacrylamide (PAM) flocculants can be used to minimize the exposure of the most hydrophilic planes of clay particles via hydrogen bonding but they can not efficiently enhance the overall particle surface floatability due to the hydrophilic properties of this type of macromolecules. A novel method to improve both flotation kinetics and surface wettability of silicate minerals has been developed and studied. That is to use a temperature-sensitive polymer, poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM), as a process aid in the flotation of silicate minerals. Unlike PAM polymers, PNIPAM can induce a hydrophilic/hydrophobic transition on the particle surface when the temperature is changed to be lower or higher than its critical solution temperature (CST). At a lower temperature, the PNIPAM adsorbs on the particle surface via hydrogen bond similar to PAM. It induces strong hydrophobic aggregation when the temperature is increased above the CST. Thus, both floc size and mineral floatability are greatly increased. The flotation results show very good flotation performance and the addition of conventional flotation collector was no more required because the increased particle surface hydrophobicity induced by PNIPAM. Contact angle measurements explained the role of PNIPAM in manipulating particle surface hydrophilic/hydrophobic transition.

The need for a sustainable development of ore deposits makes it imperative to be innovative and mindful in creating an economically and environmentally viable operation, while maintaining a good working relationship with the various stakeholders involved in developing and operating a large and complex mining project. This is becoming immensely important as gold ore deposits are becoming more mineralogically complex along with lower grades presenting both metallurgical and environmental challenges that need to be addressed in mitigating risks and improving project economics. This paper presents Barrick?s approach to development of strategic technologies for our long-term sustainable growth through conversion of valuable resources into reserves for both our green-field development projects and the expansion of our existing mining operations. Some of the key strategic solutions, including mineral processing, metallurgical and energy technologies, developed by Barrick and their impact on some of our complex gold and copper-gold ores will also be discussed in this paper. Coal is the prime source of energy in India. It now contributes to about 55% of the total power generation and will continue to have its major share in the energy mix of the country in the foreseeable future. Thermal coals of India, known for their wide variations in nature and categorized as difficult to wash due to their typical mineral matter association with the organic matrix, need suitable beneficiation technique for quality upgrade for improving the overall economics, efficiency and pollution free power generation. A non-coking high-ash coal, collected from Vasundhara open cast mine of the Ib Valley Coalfield, Orissa, has been characterized along with its different fractions obtained in the process of beneficiation for distribution of minerals using FTIR, XRD and ash analysis. The raw coal was fractionated by size as well as by density. It has been observed that ash yields and mineralogical composition (found to be mainly kaolinite and quartz) have no appreciable change in different size fractions, indicating homogeneous distribution of minerals in the coal matrix. However, for the different density fractions the mineral composition and ash yield have significant variations. The quartz content of the beneficiated coal visualized with 34% ash yield, as mandated by the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MOEF) for the use of coal in power plants is reduced to half of that of the raw coal. As quartz is the most abrasive mineral in coal, reduction of its proportion obviously signifies considerable reduction of wear of power plant machinery when beneficiated coal is fed to utility boiler for generation of power. Today, arsenic has become a much greater problem than before because of the limitations introduced by WHO and USEPA that are lowered from 0.05 ppm to 0.01 ppm. In the nature Arsenic is mostly found as inorganic compounds in the forms of arsenite (As+3) and arsenate (As+5) in aqueous solutions. Arsenic contamination in ground and surface waters has been encountered in almost every country. This element has a carcinogenic effect and can occur in natural sources and anthropogenic sources such as metal mining, groundwater usage and industrial activities. In this study adsorbing colloid flotation was applied in the presence of aluminum sulfates. In the experiments SDS and K-Oleate were used as collectors while MIBC was the frother employed. The effects of collectors and aluminum/arsenic ratios on the removal of arsenic were examined under various pH values. It was found that arsenic removal enhanced with increasing aluminum concentration. Furthermore, it was observed that pH was a very critical parameter in all experiments. The best results were obtained when initial As: SDS: Al concentrations were 10:40:40 ppm at pH 5.5. At this concentration, the efficiency of arsenic removal found to be 99.9%. Zeolite in some regions or countries of the world have been the subjects of materials for environmental remediation involving the use of removal to heavy metal ions and some organic pollutant as a sorbent because of its capacious ions exchange and huge surface area. This article addresses the equilibrium and kinetics for manganese adsorption using zeolite modified by hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (HTMAB) as a sorbent material over a range of pH between 3.4~7.2 with eight different Mn(?) solution concentrations. PHzpc (pH of zero point charge) of the sorbent was examined according to the method proposed by Tripathy and Kanungo, and a value of 6.91 was obtained. The experimental data fit langmuir?s model for the majority of pH and Mn(?) solution concentrations tested (0.92<R2<0.97). The maximal adsorption capacity, qm ascending with pH between 3.4~7.2, rise from 15.01mg?g-1 at 3.4 to 19.46 mg?g-1 at 7.2. Besides, the constant of Freundlich Kf have the same trend with qm, increases with pH ascending. And the sorption intensity, represented by parameter 1/n in Freundlich?s model, is favorable in entire range of metal ions concentration studied. Finally, kinetics data accurately fit to pseudo-second order which indicate that there must be sorption of Mn(?) behavior occurring on inner-sphere of the sorbent.

"Current empirical Semi Autogneous Grinding (SAG) mill models contain assumptions concerning the amount of energy available for particle breakage, how this energy is distributed in the mill media and the rate at which the energy is transferred. Despite these assumptions the JK SAG model is highly functional with a proven track record. DEM provides a numerical framework to greatly improve on these assumptions that were necessary due to a lack of available input data.This paper identifies key outputs of the Discrete Element Method (DEM), such as energy spectra and impact probability distribution. It describes how they can be incorporated into current mill models utilising practical rock breakage data. The rate at which energy is transferred is shown to be dependent on particle position and mill rotational speed and not once per cycle as previously assumed. Based upon this an improved energy transfer methodology is presented. The fundamental outputs of the DEM are validated against experimental three-dimensional particle tracking data, so as to establish whether the DEM produces correct energy transfer predictions on the inter-particle level, which is crucial to this work."

The downstream treatment of chloride leach solutions of WPCB for recovery of base and precious metals by a combination of adsorption and precipitation processes were carried out. A synthetic leach solution (1 M HCl, 116.5 g/L Cl-, 30 g/L Cu2+, 2.5 g/L Fe3+, 5 mg/L Au3+, 10 mg/L Ag+ and 20 mg/L Pd2+), which was prepared based on the composition of the pregnant leach solution obtained in the previous study was used in the tests. The leach solution was initially subjected to activated carbon (AC) adsorption (20 g/L AC, 80°C) in which gold was selectively recovered over silver and palladium i.e., 88% Au recovery at 0.5 h (92% at 3.5 h) compared with only 3-6% for Ag/Pd. Copper and iron were also observed to adsorb on AC as indicated by 1.4% and 17% decline, in their respective concentrations. Following the adsorption and filtration stage, metallic copper was added into the gold-barren solution to allow reduction of Cu2+ to Cu+, and to cement Pd on metallic copper. Over the mixing period (1 h), 93% of the Pd was recovered while only 1.4% of silver was cemented onto metallic copper. Subsequently, the leach solution was gradually neutralised by NaOH to pH 4, 7.5 and 9.5 for the precipitation of copper as cuprite (Cu2O). It was found that 41% and 46% of Cu and Ag, respectively, were precipitated at pH 4 at which iron was almost totally (99.8%) removed from solution. Precipitation of copper and silver was increased further at high pHs. At pH 9.5, cumulative recoveries for copper and silver were 91% and 85%, respectively. XRD analysis of the precipitates confirmed the presence of cupric copper oxides/hydroxides and revealed that copper losses occurred at pH 4 was due to the undesired presence of cupric copper in the solution.

A citric acid leaching test after heavy medium separation process was performed to remove the heavy metal contaminat such as Pb, Cu, and Zn from contaminated soil. The lead component was removed from soil by heavy medium separation whereas zinc component shows 0 % - 37.9 % removal ratio with particle size. The citric acid leaching was conducted to remove the remained zinc component. The removal ratio of Zn reached to more than 95 % under the conditions; 10 % in pulp density, 200 rpm in agitation speed, 50 °C, 2 mol/L in citric acid concentration at 2 hrs in leaching time. These results suggest that the heavy medium separation method followed by citric acid leaching is effective for treatment of soil contaminated with various chemical forms of heavy metal. The chelating reagents are used as effective collectors in wolframite flotation, and certain metal cations need to be added using chelating collectors so as to activate valuable minerals and obtain good flotation indexes. Different metal cations will result in different reactivity with collectors, in order to select the effective activator in BHA flotation of wolframite, the activation effectiveness of different metal cations on wolframite ((Fe,Mn)WO4) flotation were studied using pure minerals. The results showed that the wolframite activation by Pb2+was the best among the selected cations. The maximum flotation recovery of wolframite was found to be 95.58 % under conditions of 100mg/LBHA and 1×10-4mol/L of Pb2+at pH 9. The dosage of Pb2+needs to be controlled in an optimum range. Also, the activation mechanism of Pb2+ on BHA flotation of wolframite was investigated by measurements of contact angle, zeta potential, adsorption capacity and IR spectroscopy. It was found that Pb2+ could chemically adsorb onto the wolframite surface improving the flotability of wolframite and enhancing the adsorption of BHA on wolframite. When the dosages of BHA and Pb2+ were 100 mg/L and 1×10-4 mol/L, the adsorption quantity of BHA on wolframite sharply increased up to 0.30 mg/L at pH 9 compared with wolframite treated with only BHA.

The separation in gravity concentrators is based on the density difference between valuable and gangue minerals. In addition to density, many auxiliary parameters like particle size, shape, feed rate, pulp density etc. plays an important role in the separation. The performance efficiency of gravity units is largely based on the interference of such auxiliary parameters during separation. Many gravity concentrators are used for the beneficiation of cassiterite ores and performance of which are varying with different feed material, particle size and required enrichment from the unit. Selection of gravity units is generally based on laboratory testing and data collected from the previous experience. In the present investigation cassiterite ore collected from Uljin deposit, South Korea has been subjected to various gravity units like jig, spiral, and Knelson concentrator with the intension to pre-concentrate the ore. Second stage concentration was carried out using shaking tables. The article mainly summarizes performance evaluation methods employed for gravity concentrators. Selection of gravity circuit for the beneficiation of cassiterite was made on the basis of the recovery-grade curve, and Tromp curve methods. "Have you been on a mine site? This question was posed by Emeritus Professor Alban Lynch to Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Students from the Sustainable Minerals Institute - Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (SMI-JKMRC) in the Student Technical Presentations in 2015. From that question, five HDR students from SMI-JKMRC organised a placement on mine sites in Mexico. The SMI-JKMRC is well known for its tradition to provide their students with opportunities to enhance and test their skills in mineral processing plants. The Student Venture became a short internship for HDR students which had the objective of establishing collaboration with mining companies in Australia and overseas, and of providing a unique experience for the HDR students in regard to their training, professional development, networking and cultural interchange. In return for the companies’ support, the students conducted plant audits to evaluate the process performance thereby providing valuable data to the host company. The 2016 Student Venture was held at the Grupo Peñoles & Grupo Fresnillo in Mexico, in which three mine sites received five HDR students from JKMRC and one young researcher from Universidad de Guanajuato (UG). This paper describes the positive outcomes for the mining company and the students for this experience. The Venture was considered very successful, as it provided valuable training for the students as well as in depth information about the operation of the comminution and flotation circuits of the host sites for the Grupo Peñoles & Grupo Fresnillo. The experience also provided an opportunity for an exchange of knowledge between the HDR students and the site personnel from the host operations. The indication of the success of the experience for all involved was the support of the host company in future student internships."

Studies of the dense medium and classifying cyclone have been conducted using the Fluent computational fluid dynamics code. Experimental measurements of the segregation of medium in a DM cyclone by gamma-ray tomography and the performance of a novel classifying cyclone design have been used to test and interpret the 3D CFD predictions. The predictions of the CFD models were generally plausible, though more work is required to incorporate turbulent mixing of the slurry in the cyclone. The benefits of the novel cyclone design were explained by the model in terms of conditions favouring reduction of short-circuiting at the vortex finder, and the removal of the air core from the wall at the apex. Calcium carbonate/Titanium dioxide composite, characterized by coating TiO2 on the surface of CaCO3 particles, is an important substitute for titanium dioxide. This paper studies preparation method of CaCO3/TiO2 ,composites based on mechano-chemical effects, measures its properties as a pigment, analyzes the binding form and interface reaction mechanism between CaCO3 and TiO2. Through single finely grinding of CaCO3, co-grinding of CaCO3 together with TiO2, and mecha-no-chemical effects produced in the course of grinding, CaCO3/TiO2 composites can be prepared successfully. Results indicate that grinding fineness of CaCO3, co-grinding time of CaCO3 and TiO2, the weight ratio of grinding media to mineral feeding, and the amount of TiO2 have much influence on the properties of CaCO3/TiO2 composites. CaCO3/TiO2 composites have the properties same as titanium dioxide pigment, oil adsorption and ultraviolet adsorption same as TiO2, and 90% of hiding power as that of TiO2. Wet grinding of CaCO3 causes the production of mechano-chemical effect and hydroxyl group, through which CaCO3 and TiO2 can be bonded together. Repulsion occurs between the particles of CaCO3 and the particles of TiO2, respectively, they are both in good dispersion. But attraction occurs between CaCO3 and TiO2. TiO2 particles are distributed evenly on the surface of CaCO3. Therefore, coating of TiO2 on the surface of CaCO3 particles and chemical bond between them make CaCO3/TiO2 compo-sites have pigment properties of Titanium.

A culture-independent approach based on 16S rRNA gene clone library was used to analyze the bacterial community change both associated to the solids and in the liquid phase during pyrite bioleaching process. Phylogenetic analyses of 16S rRNA fragments revealed that the retrieved se-quences mainly related to genus Leptospirillum, genus Sulfobacillus and genus Acidithiobacillus. During the bioleaching process, genus Leptospirillum trends to grow associated to the solids while major of genus Sulfobacillus were in the liquid fase, only accounting little portion in the solids. Genus Acidithiobacillus can grow both on the solids and in the liquid phase, but accounting high portion on the solids.

"Three important components of stirred tanks involved in energy consumption, the impellers and baffles, were investigated to intensify the agitation pretreatment on the flotation of nickel ores. Flotation tests revealed that the stirred tanks with two impellers had an advantage over those with one impeller in intensifying agitation pretreatment, and the higher agitation speed led to better flotation performance of nickel ores. Installation and removal of baffles were also employed in the stirred tanks, and flotation tests demonstrated that with baffles, the flotation grade increased significantly. These agitator design improvements were used to demonstrate that the energy supplied to the system significantly influences the flotation recovery and that if the energy consumption of the agitation pretreatment is ideal, flotation efficiency can be improved. Data from full-scale operations backed up these results.INTRODUCTIONThe flotation recovery of nickel-copper sulphide ore at the Western China nickel mine has historically been difficult due to the presence of large amounts of serpentine minerals (Feng, et al., 2012). Many studies reported that serpentine minerals tend to have a positive potential at pH values up to 9.5, while sulphides (such as pentlandite and chalcopyrite) have a low isoelectric point(Feng, et al., 2012). Serpentine minerals can form surface coatings on negatively charged sulphides surface due to electrostatic attraction when they interact with each other, which may also reduce collector adsorption and increase the hydrophilicity of the sulphide particles. In order to improve the flotation of nickel sulphides, sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium silicate, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and other agents are used to disperse serpentine coating from sulphide surfaces in the flotation of the Jinchuan deposit and other nickel ores in China ( Kirjavainen and Heiskanen, 2007; Lu, et al., 2011). However, it is difficult to improve of the sulphide flotation due to the high dosage and the lack of selectivity."

The Lake Balaton is the biggest and for many reasons the most important lake in Hungary. To preserve its healthy nature it is necessary to remove the accumulated mud time to time, similarly to the many living waters, lakes and rivers everywhere. Typical existing technologies (mechanical, hydraulic) require large depositional areas, where the removed slurry and mud is dewatered through very long time. One problem is the non existence of an economical mud thickening technology. Another major problem is that current methods remove the sand fraction with the mud as well. Many times sand has to be complemented from outer sources to endanger the natural balance of the living water. By the financial support of the NKFP 3A/068/2004 Hungarian Research Project our consortium has been looking for the solution to the above mentioned problems. The original ideas of the project were: 1. Sand should be separated and returned to the water by hydrocyclon; 2. New mud thickener should be developed based on the principle that vibrating rods can force settling and packing of mud particles. The work was started by fundamental research with different samples from Lake Balaton and River Bodrog. An automated settling column (45L) has been built for the investigation of the effect of vibrating rods on the settling behavior of suspensions. An optical sensor has been developed by with the settling curve (height of settling slurry as function of time) can be automatically measured. Different vibrating methods and parameters have been tested by the application of a linear motor and mechanical eccentric drive. On the basis of the fundamental research a new thickener, called the rod ? lamella thickener has been developed and an industrial size (50m3/h) mud removing technology has been built. Main parts of the technology are the traditional dredging barge and the thickening technology. The thickening and sand separation technology is tugged by the dredging ship. Its main elements are the homogenization tank, slurry pump, hydrocyclon and the rod ? lamella thickener. In this unit lamellas carry out pre-thickening, then vibrating rods further increase the concentration. The thickened mud is transported out by a screw - of which revolution number is precisely controlled - against a spring supported valve. Paper reports about the design, building, water probe and on-site tests of this mud removing technology. Two new patents had been presented, one is about the rod ? lamella thickener and the other is about the mud removing technology with sand separation.

The kaolin losses in hydrocyclone classification are determined by the fines, which are discharged together with the water to the underflow. This paper presents an improved technique of water injection to the conical part of the cyclone applied especially for small cyclones in kaolin preparation. In small hydrocyclones water, injection is a sensitive process. Therefore, the process was stabilized by controlled water injection dependent on the measurement of the underflow shape. Three applications of this innovation are presented. In the first case, the water injection is applied for the separation stage in dilute suspension where the final product is produced in the overflow of a 50mm hydrocyclone. The underflow contains sand and residual kaolin. For a higher kaolin recovery, the underflow is usually treated downstream in washing cyclones. The wash water injection results in a 45 ? 50% - reduction of the kaolin fraction <25µm in the underflow. Thus, water injection to the classifying cyclone leads to a separation comparable with a downstream washing stage. An additional hydrocyclone stage can be deleted. The second application refers to a classification in dense suspension. Here, the underflow of the last hydrocyclone stage was directed to a washing in a 50mm hydrocyclone. The additional injection of 3L/min water in to the conical part of the cyclone reduced the kaolin losses by half.The third application was executed in the washing stage equipped with 75mm hydrocyclones where the underflow is directed to flotation. The low-grade iron ore sample contains both lumps and fines. It is mostly hematitic iron ore and considerable amount of goethitic/limonitic material is present in it. The major impurities present were quartz and clay. It is observed that the iron bearing phases are poorly liberated above 300 µm and the liberation improves below 300 µm. More than 80% liberation is achieved below 106 µm. Based on the liberation data, the feed for the different beneficiation methods was prepared by stage crushed the ROM followed by grinding passing to 106µm and the ground material (-106µm) was deslimed. The underflow was subjected to various beneficiation techniques such as tabling, enhanced gravity separator (EGS), wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS), and flotation and the results are discussed. All the methods studied could able to produce pellet grade concentrate with iron content of 64.5%, however, a marginal higher yield was observed for WHIMS (81%). An extra-refractory gold ore in China belongs to Carlin Type Gold Ore which is not only submicroscopic but also rich in arsenic and organic carbon. They have been proved that its floatability is not good enough and the gold in the ore could not be leached almost if it was not pretreated. The tests for the ore were carried out in accordance with flotation-concentrate preoxidation-cyanidation(or CIL) processes in order to exploit the mine. Two new depressants were discovered in the flotation tests and improved concentrate grades from about 20g/t to 32~50g/t. The methods of the concentrate preoxidation tests were alkaline atmospheric oxidation, acidic atmospheric oxidation, acidic pressure oxidation, roasting oxidation?biooxidation. The cyanidation tests after the concentrate preoxidation have proved the gold extraction of the pressure oxidation to be the highest(92.5%) and that of roasting secondary(89.3%). After fuller techno-economic comparison, it is suggested that the flotation-pressure oxidation or roasting-CIL process should be the most optimal for treating the ore. The gold recoveries of the ore were 83% for the pressure oxidation and 80% for the roasting respectively.
