"This paper outlines a management philosophy aimed at promoting employee involvement, quality and process improvement at Inco 's Thompson operations. It describes the use of statistical process control techniques, lessons learned and examples of progress.IntroductionThis paper provides an overview of the Manitoba Division's performance through the promotion of greater employee involvement, quality and process improvement. Having learned from other practitioners o f quality management, the Manitoba Division believes its experiences are applicable to all mining and other businesses.The Thompson operation consists of two underground mines, an open pit, a mill, a smelter and an electrolytic refinery. The workforce consists of 2000 members. The main products are electrolytic nickel slab and proprietary nickel rounds. Production levels are currently at capacity in response to heavy market demand.Paralleling much of the mining industry the corporation was faced with six years of decreasing nickel prices (Fig. I). Inco Limited survived by focusing on productivity and cost improvement. Manitoba Division productivity improved 32070 over three years beginning in 1982-the worst financial year in the company's history (Fig. 2). A real unit cost reduction of 20%, net of inflation, was also achieved (Fig . 3)."

The Sustut Copper deposit, 230 miles northwest of Prince George, B.C., was discovered in August of 1971. Subsequent exploration has included 56,417 feet of surface diamond drilling in 139 holes. The deposit occurs in gently dipping volcanic rocks of the Upper Triassic Takla Group, which outcrops as rugged mountains. The general Mesozoic sequence comprises some 20,000 feet of green and red basaltic to andesitic rocks. The Lower Formation is characterized by subaqueous basalt, andesite and augite porphyry flows with interbedded breccias. They were rapidly deposited in tectonic depressions of limited extent and steep gradients. Fades changes are abundant. The Middle Formation consists of volcaniclastic rocks made up of fragments from the underlying formation. Two cycles are discernible, both with basal turbiditic, tuf-faceous sandstone and shale units overlain by massive, volcanic conglomerates exhibiting graded and cross bedding. A broader, shallower-water basin is indicated. The top of the uppermost unit was subaerially deposited. The Upper Formation is a variable sequence of volcanic sedimentary rocks. Detritus was supplied from a wide source area and included multiple reworked fragments of the lower formations and material from other rock groups known in the region. Zeolite fades metamorphism is recognized throughout the entire sequence. Epidote is particularly abundant in the Middle Formation, demonstrating the results of metasomatism. The mineralized zone is approximately concordant with the strata over 100-200 feet of the Middle Formation succession. It lies just below the zone of transition from subaqueous to subaerial deposition in the top unit. Hematite, chalcocite, pyrite, bornite, chalcopyrite and native copper are disseminated throughout all sizes of lithic fragments and matrix. Concentration into the specific zone is believed, to be due to upward leaching of copper during low-grade metamorphic and metasomitic reaction. Precipitation occurred in the zone of hydration characterized by prehnite-pumpellyite below the oxidized subaerial rocks.

Predictions of coal cleaning plant performance from the washability data are traditionally used at the conceptual design stage of a coal preparation plant to confirm process selection. The development of computer programs which simulate the operation of a plant facilitates the optimization of product yield and quality, and ultimately proceeds. It is shown that the optimum is sensitive to changes in mine operations and market price structure. A computerized review of operations is thus recommended as an on-going activity .

"Refractoriness in Carlin-type gold ores results mostly from fine locking of gold in pyrite, locking in various gangue phases, notably quartz, and a ""preg robbing"" condition attributed to organic carbon. All three conditions may occur in any given deposit, including Newmont &apos;s Carlin and Gold Quarry deposits in Nevada, where types of ref ractoriness occur locally in minor amounts.Measurements of specific gravity, water absorption and screen size distributions of gold in alteration rock types from Gold Quarry show transitional changes from siliceous cherts through decreasingly silicified and increasingly argillized siltstones.Low permeability of siliceous ores contributes to ""size dependent"" refractoriness in cyanidation test work. Colligative physical and chemical measurements demonstrate that silicified cherty ores are difficult to grind, poorly permeable, and less amenable to cyanidation. Refractoriness in pad or column leaching of coarsely crushed siliceous siltstones and cherts is shown to correlate with interrelated measurable mineralogic and physical parameters.IntroductionMetallurgical treatment of variably amenable and refractory types of gold ore may be guided by both analytical and mineralogic data on the interlocking of gold (microscopic an d sub- microscopic) in assorted gangue/sulphide phases. Most oxidized ores from the Carlin gold mine, north of Carlin, Nevada, are amenable to direct cyanidation. The permeability of most oxidized ores from Carlin coupled with the fine size of the gold < 1.5 um) yields rapid extractions and high recovery without fine grinding.Small portions of the Carlin ore body, and also the nearby Maggie Creek and Gold Quarry orebodies, are less amenable to cyanidation, and are classified as refractory. Refractory conditions may be attributed mostly to the association or interlocking of gold with pyrite and /or microcrystalline quartz or chert, and also by the adsorption of leached gold by deleterious forms of carbon, termed ""preg-robbing"" carbon. Each of these conditions are described and defined, with emphasis on a form of silica-locking, which has been referred to as "" size dependent"" refractoriness."

"The Snow Lake massive sulphide deposits are hosted by Aphebian volcanic rocks of the Flin Flon - Snow Lake greenstone belt, which in this area were deformed and metamorphosed to the amphibolite facies during the Hudsonian orogeny. All the known deposits occur in felsic rocks a short distance below the contact with an overlying mafic rock unit.The Stall Lake copper deposit occurs close to the top of an explosive felsic volcanic sequence. Rocks stratigraphically underlying the deposit have been hydrothermally altered by the mineralizing fluids. The sulphides were probably deposited from submarine volcanic vent(s) on the flanks of a felsic dome. The ore has been tightly folded, flattened and elongated parallel to the northerly trending lineation of the surrounding rocks during the several periods of deformation. Strike lengths of the lenses range from 60 to 300 feet and plunge-to-strike ratios are as much as 15:1.Ore lenses I to 4 typically consist of massive coarse-grained pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and pyrite. A stratigraphically higher lens differs in that it contains fine-grained pyrite and chalcopyrite, with an increase in sphalerite toward its hanging wall. The No.4 orebody has a distinct footwall alteration zone characterized by brecciation and abundant chlorite-staurolite- garnet schist, with minor kyanite, anthophyllite, cordierite and anhydrite, as well as sulphide minerals. Chemically, the alteration zone is distinguished from the unaltered felsic rocks by Na20 depletion and Mg-Fe enrichment"

The district is located near the eastern limit of the Flin Flon - Snow Lake greenstone belt, which contains Amisk metavolcanic rocks of Aphebian age."

"The Cheminis gold mineralization zone is approximately 6.5 km west of the Kerr Addison Mine along the Larder Lake Shear Zone, in the southern part of the Abitibi Greenstone Belt. The zone is very similar in appearance to the flow ore at the Kerr Addison Mine and occurs at the same stratigraphic position. Drilling has demonstrated that the gold mineralization at Cheminis persists to a depth of over 3000 ft .The mineralization is hosted by a pyritic, tuffaceous sediment which occurs within a sequence of volcanics and sediments which have been pervasively carbonatized. The gold is largely enclosed within pyrite grains and the amount of gold in the layers of pyrite increases in the layers closest to a graphitic f ault zone.It is suggested that the gold mineralization may be primarily related to the syngenetic sulphide concentrations formed during fumarolic activity on the seafloor along the Larder Lake Shear Zone. At a later stage a hydrothermal event associated with alkalic volcanism may have resulted in regional carbonatization and further concentration of the gold in the vicinity of fault zones."

NQ-diameter drill core, frequently used in mineral exploration programs does not meet that specification, it being 45 mm diameter or less.This paper reports the effect of performing the impact test on contiguous sections of HQ diameter and NQ diameter core, exploring the hypothesis that the contiguous intervals give equivalent results in spite of the core diameter difference."

Carbonate-rich rocks occur at several localities within the Flin Flon volcanic sequence of the eastern Amisk Lake area. The rocks occur in two areas: as a group of small occurrences on islands within Amisk Lake and as two much larger linear belts running parallel to the regional structure east of Amisk Lake. Mineralogically, the rocks consist of talc and Ca-poor ankerite with occasional graphite. Segregation of these minerals and colour variation impart a well-defined planar fabric to the rocks and where the units are fairly continuous (e.g. Mosher Lake), their trend and attitude suggests a concordant relationship to the volcanics. Major and trace analysis of22 samples confirms the presence of two types, with one type being represented in each of the two areas. Most of the elements studied can be used to characterize the two groups, but three elements in particular give a clear separation: Mg, AI and Ni. Recalculation of the major element analyses, on a water and carbonate-f ree basis, indicates that one group (large concordant bodies with high MgO, high Ni and low AI20.J is altered ultrabasic material of peridotitic or dunitic composition. Because no relict igneous material is observed, and the contacts are apparently very sharp, it is possible that the hydration-carbonization process occurred simultaneously with intrusion, .in a closed system. The other group (small occurrences with relatively low MgO, low Ni and high AI203J represents alteration of basaltic rocks. AIthough some analyses suggest the introduction of calcium, as carbonate, along with the volatiles, the major oxides have remained remarkably stable during the alteration process(es).

"Extensive deposits of tectonically sheared coal of the Mist Mountain Formation occur in the south eastern Canadian Cordillera. The quality of the coal varies markedly; it is commonly partially oxidized and poor washability characteristics.Oxidation of the sheared coal has been promoted by its fine grain-size and by fractures in adjacent rocks which have facilitated penetration of atmospheric oxygen and circulation of oxygenated waters. Oxidation has resulted in a loss of coking power, a decrease in vitrinite reflectance, and an Increase In oxygen and decrease in carbon content.The relatively low clean coal yields of the sheared coal are primarily the result of the greater volume of mineral matter present, which in turn reflects both the greater susceptibility to shearing of coal with abundant rock partings and the shearing and dissemination throughout the coal of formerly discrete rock partings. The high ash content of some sheared coal seams may be artificial, resulting from the difficulty in distinguishing and separating sheared roof rock and floor strata from the coal seam during mining. There is little variation between the quality of the washed sheared and unsheared coal, with the exception of the somewhat higher ash content of the clean sheared coal compared to clean unsheared coal. This poorer separation of the ash from the organic fraction of the sheared coal is considered to be a product of the large amount of fines present as well as the local formation of aggregates of organic material and ash resulting from plastic flowage of the vitrite and clarite during shearing.IntroductionIn the southeastern Canadian Cordillera, coal seams of the Lower Cretaceous Mist Mountain Formation (Gibson, 1979 were in part sheared and comminuted during Late Cretaceous and Tertiary tectonism . Extensive deposits of sheared coal exist, and even in areas of mild deformation the coal may be locally sheared (Bustin, 1979). "Whitehorse Copper is a 2600-ton-per-day underground copper mine located within the city limits of Whitehorse, Yukon . In early 1978, due to increasingly difficult ground conditions. it was decided to investigate the conversion from longhole open stoping to vertical crater retreat mining. On-site crater testing by C-I-L demonstrated the feasibility of V.C.R. mining at Whitehorse Copper.After some investigation. a down-the-hole drilling rig was chosen and drilling began in November /978. Blasting began in June /979. and to September 1980 approximately one million tons of ore had been blasted. In-field changes to both drilling and blasting techniques have been implemented. Some of these changes were dictated by problems encountered; others were made to improve efficiencies.To date. V.C.R. mining has proven successful from a drilling and blasting aspect.IntroductionWhitehorse Copper Mines Ltd ., a division of Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited , is a 2600-Lp.d. underground copper mine. The plant site is located I mile west of the Alaska Highway, and approximately 7 miles south of Whitehorse city center. Production is from the Little Chief orebody, and total output is from vertical crater retreat stopes.The Little Chief and Middle Chief orebodies at Whitehorse Copper had original reserves in excess of 6 million tons, most of which graded 2.00/0 copper or higher . The orebodies are typical skarn deposits that have developed along the contact between an intrusive diorite and a limestone-quartzite flank pendant. The limestone has been metasomatized to form a calcium-magnesium skarn which, along the limestone / quartzite contact, has locally further developed into a mineralized magnetite-serpentine skarn. The principal copper minerals are bornite and chalcopyrite, with minor chalcocite and valleriite. Skarn gangue minerals are serpentine, diopside, garnet, epidote, calcite and wollastonite. Appreciable values in gold with some silver are present and recovered as well."

"Considerable gold and silver values are lost to flotation tailing from both the South ern Tail orebody and the Main Zone orebody,The underlying mineralogical assemblage of the two ore types is quite different. This paper describes the research strategy employed to determine an economical method to scavenge gold and silver from flotation tailing.Much of the unrecovered gold in the Southern Tail ore is associated with arsenopyrite while silver losses are probably as unliberated tetrahedrite and minor silver-bearing sulphosalts. Processing alternatives tested include bulk sulphide recovery by flotation and gravity, selective pyrite-arsenopyrite separation, cyanidation, and oxidation pretreatments such as pressure leaching and bioleaching to enhance cyanidation response. Gold losses in the Main Zone ore are more closely associated with silver-bearing minerals, pyrite, and siliceous gangue and consequently respond more readily to conventional tank cyanidation. The 5 300 tid carbon-in-leach circuit to treat Main Zone flotation tailing is described in detail.IntroductionEquity Silver Mines Limited&apos;s open-pit silver mine, a 70% owned subsidiary of Placer Development Limited, is located 37 km southeast of Houston in north central British Columbia. The deposit consists of two major ore zones, Main Zone and Southern Tail (Fig. I). These zones are within a sequence of Cretaceous volcanic and sedimentary rocks striking 015 degree s and dipping 45 degrees west. Feasibility ore reserves were 28 million tonnes grading 106 g A g/t, 0.96 g Au !t and 0.38% Cu a strip ratio of 2.2 to I. A detailed mineralogical description has been presented and a comparison of the two ore zones is shown in Table I."

During the period May 15 ? 17, 2006 four fatalities occurred at #1 Waste Dump, at Teck Cominco?s Sullivan mine located at the city boundary of Kimberley, British Columbia, Canada. The fatalities occurred in the sump of a water monitoring station. The Chief Inspector of Mines and his staff immediately responded to the incident. The team worked collaboratively with the Teck Ltd. Trail Hazmat team, a consultant group from Rescan Ltd. and other Teck operation and technical staff. Sampling in and around the water monitoring station in the days following the fatalities showed that exposure to a depleted oxygen environment was the immediate cause of the fatalities. The sump located at the base of the shed was hydraulically connected to a French (coarse rock) drain, located at the toe of the covered waste dump. This presentation will briefly review the immediate cause of the accident, the investigation, a brief introduction to the work of the Sullivan Technical panel and the British Columbia government?s response to the incident and the recommendations of the Coroner?s inquest.
