Abstract-Plants have a remarkable ability to select, use and store metals derived from the substrate. Each species is unique in its requirements for and tolerances to the full spectrum of chemical elements in the Periodic Table. Studies to define the chemical characteristics of common trees and shrubs of the temperate forest are providing insight to their use for exploration, i.e., biogeochemical exploration. Examples of surveys over gold deposits in British Columbia show the effectiveness of sampling various tissues from different species in a range of biogeoclimatic environments. At the Nickel Plate mine in the Montane-Spruce zone, outer bark of Lodgepole pine was effective in defining a large area of metal enrichment; at the Carolin mine in the zone of Coastal Mountain Hemlock, analysis of twigs of western hemlock and Pacific silver fir provided an exploration target considerably larger than that defined by lithogeochemistry; at the Mount Washington gold deposit in the Mountain Hemlock zone, twigs of mountain hemlock and rhododendron were used to outline the mineralization; and in the Interior Douglas-fir zone at the QR deposit analysis of Douglas-fir tops collected by helicopter provided a rapid and effective method of identifying a gold-rich area.

"The property of Arntfield Mining Corporation, formerly Arntfield Gold Mines, Limited, covers an area of 2,110 acres and lies in Beauchastel township, western Quebec. The Francoeur mine lies to the west, and to the east are the West Wasa and Wasa Lake properties.The property was staked in September, 1923, by the late F. S. Arntfield. The early surface work was concentrated in the west part of the property along the Francoeur-Arntfield shear zone. The zone was opened by No. 1 shaft, which was sunk for an inclined depth of 250 feet. A series of silicified lenses were discovered farther east, where No. 2 shaft was later raised to the surface. A third shaft explored a shear zone about 1,900 feet to the east, where No. 3 shaft orebodies were developed.The mill was built at No. 3 shaft and production commenced in July, 1935, at 125 tons a day. This was increased to 280 tons by 1938, and later to 350 tons. The mine continued operations on this scale until April, 1942, when the exigencies of war necessitated closing. The Company was reorganized in 1944 and underground development was resumed in June, 1945. The total value of gold and silver produced to April, 1942, was $2,011, 755 from 529,987 tons of ore.ROCK TYPESThe area is underlain by highly deformed and altered Keewatin volcanics overlain by little deformed Cobalt sediments along the south boundary. The lavas in the vicinity of the mine workings are rhyolite, trachyte, andesite, and a flow breccia of intermediate composition. The fragmentals range from fine, well-bedded tuffs to coarse agglomerate in which acidic and basic horizons can be distinguished.The intrusive rocks are diorite and quartz-feldspar porphyry in the form of stock and sills, and narrow dykes of mica lamprophyre and syenite porphyry."

The control of carbon concentration in a counter current carbon absorption circuit is critical to optimise gold recovery. MINTEK has developed a carbon movement controller to address this potentially problematic area in gold extraction. This controller reduces operator interaction by automating carbon movement. Elution schedules are entered into the control system, which then moves the carbon through the circuit into the first adsorption tank until enough carbon is available for elution. This is done while maintaining the specified carbon profile within the circuit. MINTEK has also developed an online-carbonconcentration- meter to measure carbon concentration in pulp. The meter uses an ultrasonic measurement technique. Long term testing has shown the measurement to be robust and require minimal maintenance. Results from a gold mine in South Africa’s well known Witwatersrand gold producing area has shown a decrease in soluble gold loss between 30 - 50% when the controller was used.

It is a general expectancy that in most of the construction and renovation project, the contractor is going to hand over the as-built documents to the owner or the facility management team at the completion of the project. The main challenge for the handover process is to ensure the completeness of the captured building information and the accuracy of it in terms of how well it represents the reality. Building information models (BIMs) can be used as an information repository to store and deliver as-built information. However, due to changes made in the construction and renovation phases and errors made in the design and modeling phases, discrepancies can exist between BIMs created in the design phase (asdesigned BIMs) and actual building conditions. Laser scanning technology is able to efficiently capture accurate geometric information, which provides an opportunity to identify and quantify discrepancies and update as-designed BIMs into as-built BIMs. This paper presents a case study, within which the asdesigned BIM of a newly renovated research lab was updated into an as-built BIM using laser scanned data captured in the renovation phase. This paper introduces the challenges associated with the updating process for the as-designed BIM. In order to address these challenges, this paper introduces a framework that supports the update of an as-designed BIM by incorporating point clouds captured by the progressive laser scans.

Recycling of e-scrap is often performed by utilizing a pyrometallurgical Cu smelting process. Several valuable metals, including precious metals, can be efficiently recovered through the Cu smelting process. However, recovery of Sn is quite difficult because it is distributed in slag during the smelting process. Sn is used as solder and plating in electronic devices, and its recycling will be more important in the future. In light of this background, a pretreatment process that can extract Sn directly and selectively from e-scrap was developed in this study. The proposed Sn extraction process involves alkaline leaching using iodate ions, IO 3, as an oxidizing agent. We conducted leaching experiments for Sn, Sn-Ag-Cu alloy solder, and Cu, and the effective dissolution of Sn was confirmed. In principle, the electrodeposition of Sn from the leach solution and regeneration of IO3 are possible by a subsequent electrolysis process. The results obtained in this study suggest that the proposed leaching process can be an effective and useful pretreatment for Cu-smelting-based e-scrap recycling. INTRODUCTION Electronic scrap (e-scrap), including waste printed circuit boards (PCBs), is one of the fastest growing waste treatment streams in the global urban environment. E-scrap contains numerous valuable metallic elements, including Cu, Sn, and precious metals, in rich quantity. Furthermore, some metals and other materials contained in e- scrap are hazardous to human health and the environment when they are not properly managed. The recycling of e- scrap is therefore a major concern in terms of resource supply and waste treatment, and it has been performed by many companies using a variety of methods.

"Bubble size plays a key role in flotation. In this paper, we examine the possibility of using passive acoustic sending to determine bubble size. Software was developed based on Short Time Fourier Transformation (STFT) to analyze the frequency of the acoustic signal emitted from the bubble formation event. Bubble size was determined from the Minnaert frequency. The acoustic-determined bubble size responded to reagent dosage, but was less sensitive than that given by imaging. The constraints of the current acoustic approach are discussed.INTRODUCTIONBubble size is an important factor affecting flotation performance. It determines the maximum available surface area for collecting and transporting mineral particles. Of interest for process control (Gorain, Franzidis, & Manlapig, 1995), it can be determined by several techniques, such as image analysis (Grau & Heiskanen, 2002; Hernandez-Aguilar, Gomez, & Finch, 2002); conductivity (Barigou & Greaves, 1992); drift flux analysis using gas rate and gas holdup measurements (Banisi & Finch, 1994); and optical sensors (Randall, Goodall, Fairlamb, Dold, & Connor, 1989). However, all these techniques have drawbacks.Acoustic analysis of the oscillatory behaviour of bubbles to extract bubble size is another possibility (Leighton & Walton, 1987; Pandit, Varley, Thorpe, & Davidson, 1992; Al-Masry, Ali, & Aqeel, 2005; Manasseh & Ooi, 2009; Leighton & White, 2012; Spencer et al., 2012). Microcapsules containing extractants have been applied to the extraction of metal ions, organic acid, pesticide, and herbicide. The difficulties of conventional liquid-liquid extraction in phase mixing and phase separation (e.g. high energy consumption, emulsification phenomenon, and large equipment requiring housing) could be overcome in a liquid-solid system by using microcapsules. Even some extractants with high viscosity and poison can be encapsulated conveniently into microcapsules. In the work described in this paper, polysulfone microcapsules containing 2-ethylhexylphosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester (P507) were successfully prepared. Then, the extraction rate of lanthanum, samarium, and erbium in dilute solution into the microcapsules containing P507 was studied. An extraction kinetic model is proposed based on the interfacial reaction model accompanied by intraparticle diffusion expressed by Fick’s law. The extraction efficiency was obtained by using the kinetic model with the separately determined complex formation rate constant and the intraparticle diffusion coefficient. From the results, it was confirmed that the kinetic model could predict the experiment in a microcapsule system over a wide concentration range of lanthanide solution. In the future, the model could provide good guidance for the design and application in extraction of lanthanides.

"This paper deals with the prediction of locked cycle flotation results from data developed from individual batch tests. A postulate is made that the distribution of material in a separation stage is determined by the chemical conditions and the flotation time and that this distribution can be characterized by split factors which are constants for a fixed set of conditions. With this premise, it is demonstrated that a steady state balance can be calculated for a circuit.Although the necessary equations can be solved algebraically, a computer program was written that uses an iterative tec1nique to arrive at the steady state balance. The program is written so that a variety of circuits can readily be simulated.A number of examples are examined to demonstrate the validity of this simulation procedure. The sensitivity of the material balance to changes in the split factors was examined. Shovel bucket blast fragmentation analysis is an alternate way to assess blast performance and its effects on downstream mining processes. A camera is installed on the boom of cable shovels, and the stick of hydraulic shovels. Images are captured automatically as the shovel digs, and are processed to acquire rock size information. The automatic data acquisition makes this method safe to use with minimal manual labour. It also allows for a large set of sample data to be captured from both the surface and the interior of a bench face. The system has been deployed in several mines to provide an objective assessment of blasting performance. Images are captured from their cable or hydraulic shovels. The images are grouped into sets based on the shovel location and time to match the fragmentation to specific blasts. Blast fragmentation reports are created for each blast after reviewing the results. Measuring blast fragmentation from the shovel bucket proves to be an effective alternative for blast performance assessment with unique advantages. The blast fragmentation information has been valuable to the mines, and the mines have begun adopting it into their operations.

"Rapid dampening suspension is a proposed suspension design for ultra-class haulers that is intended to avoid metal-to-metal contact inside a strut and under shock loading, thus improving ride quality and ameliorating fatigue loading issues on a hauler structure. Laboratory testing has shown the ability of the proposed design to reduce the opportunity for bottoming out, that is, metal-to-metal contact between the colliding ends of oleo-pneumatic, two-piece suspension struts during the compression cycle. This paper predicts the performance of a full-size rapid dampening suspension strut by applying scaling rules to test the proposed design based on a set of field data from a Caterpillar 797B ultra-class haul truck operating in the oil sands region of the province of Alberta, Canada. The paper depicts the current status of the EKSPERT mining machinery management system and shows the prospects for its further development. The system is the result of a rare attempt to utilize the comprehensive dataset; this refers to a precisely identified group of users and is used to develop a solution with a scope that encompasses other areas of activity within the company. The authors present the incredible flexibility and usefulness of the system used at KGHM Polska Miedz S.A. for everyday control of the mining machinery fleet. The issue of visual aspects of the reports generated by the system is handled separately and used as a tool allowing for implementation of the methodological assumptions of EKSPERT. A concept for creating a system for assisting decision making in the process of mine management with the use of IT tools and production monitoring is also discussed. The solution is based on integration of information from both the monitoring field and visualization of the technological process around the Production Reporting Center.

"In this paper, the mechanical properties of Tournemire argillite are modeled using a mathematical framework which employs the microstructure tensor approach (Pietruszczak & Mroz, 2000). The experimental data incorporates the results of a series of triaxial tests (Abdi & Evgin, 2013) conducted at different orientation of bedding planes relative to the direction of loading. First, a plasticity framework is presented which involves the specification of the conditions at failure as well as the description of the irreversible deformation process. Later, a systematic procedure is outlined for identification of material functions/parameters involved. The paper is concluded by presenting the results of numerical simulations of the triaxial tests. It is demonstrated that the model can adequately reproduce the primary effects of anisotropy in the stable deformation regime as well as the onset of fracture.INTRODUCTIONThe understanding of the mechanical behaviour of argillaceous rocks is important in many types of geotechnical projects, including petroleum extraction, carbon dioxide sequestration as well as deep geological disposal of radioactive waste. In all these cases, the primary concern is the onset and propagation of damage due to excavation, transport of pore fluids and/or elevated temperature. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), Canada’s nuclear regulator, will be responsible for the licensing of future deep geological repositories. In order to evaluate the safety of deep geological repositories, CNSC staff keep abreast of scientific developments by collaborating with national and international partners on experimental and theoretical research on the long-term performance of those engineered and natural barriers. Through that collaboration, the CNSC has access to data resulting from experiments performed at different Underground Research Laboratories (URL). Such an URL is situated in Tournemire, France, in an argillaceous rock formation, the Tournemire argillite. The Tournemire argillite is characterized by the presence of closely spaced bedding planes and exhibits a strong anisotropic behaviour, so that its strength as well as deformation properties are directionally dependent."

Flow field design is critical for PEM fuel cells. The flow field design can affect reactant distribution to the catalyst surface, water management, thermal management and current collection. Therefore, it has tremendous impacts on the fuel cell performance and durability as well as reliability and operational flexibility. In this paper, an optical method is used to study the reactant distribution in the flow field channels of two commonly used flow field designs, straight channel design and serpentine channel design. Images of the flow patterns are shown followed by discussions of the flow patterns.

"Solids concentration (% solids) profiles and the clear liquid/slurry interface level (mudline) were determined from conductivity measurements in thickeners at Falconbridge' s Strathcona mill (Ni concentrate and non-mag thickeners) and Kidd Creek Division (Cu, Zn concentrates and final tails in the concentrator and thickeners in the Zn plant).The conductivity measurement system consisted of a probe 1.5 m in length with 24 electrode cells, a 24-channel relay, a conductivity meter and a computer. A conductivity profile is collected which locates the mud-line by the sharp change in conductivity. The conductivity measurements are readily converted to solids concentration profiles without need for calibration.The results from the conductivity measurements were compared with those from pressure profiles and direct measurements on local samples obtained using a modified Noranda sampler.It is concluded that the conductivity technique is applicable to locate the mud-line and to estimate the solids concentration profiles in thickeners. This on-line information could improve the operational efficiency of industrial thickeners.INTRODUCTIONAn automated, on-line technique for detecting the clear liquid/slurry interface (or mudline) and the variation in solids concentration with depth would enhance thickener operation and control. In some processes such enhanced control offers significant benefits. For example, in hydrometallurgical operations solid/liquid separation is often the process limiting step. Water treatment plants are increasingly expected to operate remotely and reliable sensing is vital.Current attempts to detect the mud-line include reflection of some signal (e.g. sonar), floats (Dahlstrom, 1985) and measurement of pressure (Rosenblum, 1991), and in one case, natural radioactivity of the solids (Johnston and Simic, 1991). A recent commercial development uses reflection from a vertical array of optical transmitters/sensors, which also gives local solids concentration (BTG Inc., 1991)."

"The Algoma (or Blind River) uranium district is centred in an area of some 600 square miles on the north shore of Lake Huron, about half way between Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario (Figure 1). Its favourable location, adjoining the main provincial highway and Canadian Pacific Railway line which follow the lake shore, has contributed greatly to its rapid development.By Canadian standards, the district has long attracted geological attention, beginning with the discovery of the Bruce mine in 1846. It has been repeatedly prospected at intervals since then, chiefly for copper and nickel but also for lead, zinc, cobalt, silver, iron, and gold. Numerous discoveries have prompted the suggestion by Yates (13) and others that one metal-logenic province embraces the entire mineralized area from Michigan through Sudbury and Cobalt.Geological mapping was initiated by Murray in 1847, and the area attracted much interest as the type locality of the Huronian, the correlation and stratigraphic position of which are still not entirely agreed on. Subsequent contributors to the geological literature of the area have been very numerous, and the bibliography at the end of this paper includes only some of the more modern reports.The history of uranium in this part of Ontario also dates from 1847, when J. L. LeConte identified as uranium-bearing a pitchblende-like mineral which he named ""coracite"". The specimens came from Theano Point, north of Sault Ste. Marie. In 1948 a search for the source of these specimens led to the discovery of the Camray uranium field. Occurrences in this field consist of numerous small and locally rich pitchblende-bearing fractures, within or along the contacts of diabase dykes cutting Archaean granite and gneiss.None of the showings explored proved large enough to justify production, but they stimulated prospecting of adjoining areas and thus led to the Algoma discoveries.The first find of radioactive conglomerate in place was made in 1949 in Long township, and it was partially staked as the Fisher-Audette-Breton property. Rusty, overgrown rock-cuts indicated that the pyrite-bearing conglomerate had been investigated years before, probably during searches for base metals and gold. Examinations were made at this time by a number of geologists, including the senior author. In spite of high radioactivity, sampling returned only negligible uranium. The claims were allowed to lapse and the showings reverted to obscurity."

Sub-stoichiometric roasting of arsenic-bearing copper ores is a well established practice. However, ores containing calcium commonly prove challenging where very low arsenic levels are desired, but the reasons for this phenomenon have largely been speculative. In the course of treating arsenicbearing copper ores by partial roasting in fluid bed reactors, XPS encountered one of these Ca-bearing ores which proved a challenge to roast to acceptably low levels of arsenic. Mineralogical examination of the calcines using a combination of XRD (X-ray diffraction), QEMSCAN (Quantitative Evaluation of Materials by Scanning Electron Microscope) and EPMA (Electron Probe Micro-Analysis) helped to identify the arsenic bearing species and assisted in developing a workable theory on the sequence of reactions occurring during the roast. With the assistance of thermo-chemical modelling, this allowed adjustment of the roasting conditions to minimise the amount of arsenic retention in the calcine in spite of the presence of calcium in the ore and advance the roasting program to a commercially acceptable solution.

Gold has been often used as an alloying component in order to increase or modify the catalytic properties of an active metal. For example, in the hydroconversion of methylcyclopentane, Riahi et al [1] shown that the addition of gold to palladium or platinum enhances the activity which becomes greater than that of the pure metals whereas the selectivity towards products resulting from ring expansion increases. Molenbroek et al [2] presented a detailed study on Ni-Au catalysts which exhibit activity for steam reforming and have been proved to be more resistant toward carbon formation than the pure Ni catalysts. Blocking of highly reactive Ni edge and kink sites by Au atoms is assumed to be the reason for the increased robustness of the Ni-Au catalyst. Nevertheless, the own catalytic properties of pure gold have been almost ignored up to the pioneering work of Haruta et al [3] which demonstrates the high activity of gold for CO oxidation at low temperatures. Other reactions such as WGS reaction, propylene epoxidation or benzene total oxidation have then been shown to be catalyzed by gold [4]. This discovery induced the publication of papers devoted to analyze the different factors controlling the activity of gold catalysts. Among them the most relevant appears to be the gold particle size, the nature of the support [5] and the preparation methods [6]. Clearly distinguish between support and size effect is not straightforward. Indeed, the calcination step often needed to synthesize supported catalysts on different supports, leads to different particle sizes showing that particle size and support are interdependent. To circumvent this difficulty, Au-based supported catalysts have been synthesized by using laser vaporization and low energy cluster beam deposition. The as prepared catalysts have then been characterized and tested in CO oxidation reaction.

Introduction This paper outlines the causes of underground fires at Noranda Mines and the precautionary measures taken to guard against such fi res. Shafts There are six shafts (Figures and lA) on the property, of which N os. 1 and 2 are abandoned. Nos. 3, 4, and 5 are the present working openings from surface and No 6 is an internal shaft. No. 3 is used primarily as a service shaft, while Nos.?1 and 5 are the main hoisting shafts. Orebodies The orebodies are of two distinct types. There are the massive sulphide bodies, and the areas of mineralized rhyolite containing gold values and a silica content high enough for fluxing purposes. The massive sulphide bodies contain chalcopyl'ite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, and minor amounts of sphalerite and magnetite. The concentration of particular sulphides varies even within the same body. It is the areas high in pyrite, and to a lesser degree those, high in pyrrhotite, that are of particular interest.
