The past decade shows record increases in global demand for minerals and metals with an accompanying significant decline in skilled personnel. Mining companies today are examining new technologies to maximize production, reduce costs, and create safer work conditions to deal with this shortfall. Automation of an open-pit mine haulage system is receiving attention as a beneficial option since it provides more consistent and efficient operation of mining equipment, it removes workers from potential danger, it reduces fuel consumption significantly reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and it can help optimize vehicle repairs and equipment replacement because of more-predictable and better-controlled maintenance. This paper describes a simulation model under development using the EXTENDSIM software package to examine scale-up issues and constraints of autonomous vehicles in comparison to a manual system. The software can predict and manage Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), such as productivity, safety, cost, equipment failures, fuel consumption, and tire wear under different road and load conditions. By breaking-down the various systems of an autonomous haulage truck and simulating the overall haulage system using a Monte Carlo approach, the model becomes a flexible and powerful tool to use within a mining organization. Direct comparison to a manuallyrun system can be done to show the cost and operational benefits of automation. Project managers can use this tool to guide decision-making about possible application of autonomous haulage trucks at a specific mine site.

A dynamic multiscale simulation method has been developed to study the material scratching processes on nanoscale single crystals. The model simultaneously captures the atomistic mechanisms near the free surface and the long range mobility of dislocations and their interactions, without the computational cost of full atomistic simulations. The method also permits the simulation of system sizes that are approaching experimentally accessible systems, albeit in 2D. Simulations are performed on single crystal aluminum to study the atomistic details, surface evolution, and generation and propagation of dislocations for a variety of scratching depths at room temperature. Simulations demonstrate the power of the developed method in capturing both long-range dislocation plasticity and short-range atomistic phenomena during tool advance. Variations of scratching normal and tangential forces are investigated and related to plastic deformation and dislocations generation during the simulation process.

"Because of its wide areal extent, its numerous lithological facies and its high degree of metamorphism, the Quebec portion of the Grenville province has only partly been explored and prospected. Rock types that are economically among the most interesting in the Grenville are those of mafic and ultramafic compositions, because of their great potential for coppernickel and chromium-platinum. The peculiar mode of occurrence and the distribution of these igneous masses in which copper-nickel mineralization is known to occur indicate' two common geological features: (1) aerial photographs and/or topographic maps strongly' suggest close spatial (and possibly temporal and genetic) association of most of these mineralized mafic and ultramafic intrusions with circular structures; (2) when plotted on a large-scale map comprising the Quebec portion of the Grenville, these circular structures fall along two lines which could correspond to major tectonic features. Even though the genetic links among the mineralized mafic-ultramafic masses, the circular structures and the linear features are not yet fully understood, their associations are believed to be empirically valid and should therefore be used as geological tools by those interested in exploring the Grenville for copper-nickel and possibly chromium-platinum deposits. It should be noted that these mafic and ultramafic bodies do not appear to be spatially related to anorthosite complexes."

"Flotation is possible when the forces operating between a bubble and the attached particle are properly balanced. There are many forces operating in the bubble-particle aggregate. The magnitude, location and direction of the forces depend on the type of process. The simplest arrangement in flotation is when a spherical bubble is attached to a spherical particle and both are immersed in water. In such a system there are four essential forces which shape the stability of the bubble-particle aggregate. They are excess pressure and interfacial solid/liquid, solid/gas and liquid/gas forces. A proper analysis and balance of the size, location and direction of these four principal forces lead to a general equation delineating the stability of the spherical particle–attached bubble system. Specific cross sections of the system and solution of the general equation lead to different relationships including the Young formula as well as the well-known geometrical relation between contact angle, particle and bubble radiuses. The arrangement of forces in the proposed graphical representation of the Young law is different from that presently used in literature for a bubble attached to an unmovable solid particle. Many real solid/liquid/gas systems are more complex due to the presence of additional forces which change the regular curvature of the liquid/gas interface leading to advancing and receding contact angles.INTRODUCTIONThere are numerous papers (Athukorallage, Aulisa, Iyer & Zhang, 2015; Chau, Bruckard, Koh & Nguyen, 2009; Drzymala, 1994; Lubarda, 2012; Pellicer, Manzanares & Mafe, 1995; Wang, Cui, Zhou, Xu, Sun, & Zhu, 2014; Young, 1804) and books (Davies & Rideal, 1963; Defay & Prigogine, 1966; Lee, 2013; Lyklema, 2000) dealing with the solid/liquid/gas system. Many of them concern the three involved phases having the shape of a sphere or spherical cap and the formed contact angle. The contact angle is usually measured through the liquid phase and can be either smaller or greater than 90o. The essential part of these publications is a graphical representation of the system with the Young equation shown as a result of balance of only three forces that is the excess Gibbs (or Helmholz) free energy per unit area of the three involved interfaces (Davies & Rideal, 1963; Defay & Prigogine, 1966; Israelachvili, 1985) (Figs. 1a-c). The prospect of obtaining high-grade concentrates from Canadian pyrochlore ores is rather unlikely, and experimental beneficiation pro-cesses ?appear to have yielded products in the range of 3 to 20 per cent N'b205? A possible solution of the problem is to find an economical chemical method for recovering high-purity Nb2?05 from such concentrates. A technically feasible but economically unproved process is outlined in this paper, in which the concentrate is decomposed by an acid attack and the oxides of niobium and tantalum are isolated and then separated by liquid-liquid extraction. The solution of the ore is adjusted to 7 M HF-5 M HNO3 and the niobium and tantalum are extracted from this solution with methyl isobutyl ketone. The mixed oxides of niobium and tantalum are recovered from the oxdanic phase and dissolved in 0.5 M HF-1.0 M HNO3. Tantalum is extracted preferentially from this solution with methyl isobutyl ketone, leaving niobium in the aqueous phase. By the use of this process it is possible to produce niobium pentoxide and tantalum pentoxi.de in 99.5 per cent purity with a recovery of approximately 95 'per cent, under lab-oratory conditions.

Pyrrhotite-rich tailings from Sudbury, Ontario mining activities are known to contain significant amounts of EV metals, such as nickel and cobalt.  CanmetMINING has developed a novel bioleaching process for recovering the nickel and cobalt (both critical for vehicle electrification) from tailings that incorporates partial neutralization and iron removal in the bioleaching circuit; bench- and pilot-scale tests have resulted in excellent nickel and cobalt recovery over a range of temperatures.  However, this process generates a new bioleach residue, which is heavier and more voluminous than the original tailings due to pyrrhotite oxidation and jarosite formation during the bioleaching process. This residue can be problematic for long-term disposal. A possible solution being studied for this issue is using mine backfill as a disposal mechanism.  Underground backfilling allows for effective re-purposing of mine waste, however the backfill must also be able to withstand a certain load, since in most cases it is used as an underground construction material, such as in cut-and-fill mining methods.  Therefore, the composition of the mill tailings must be such that when combined with a binding agent and pumped underground, the slurry or paste is then able to withstand a certain load within a certain period of time.  Unfortunately, high-pyrrhotite content tailings, commonly found on mine sites in Ontario and Quebec, are reactive and can easily oxidize and produce acidity and/or metal-laden drainage under some disposal conditions. This means that the pyrrhotite in the tailings can lead to acid mine drainage if stored on surface, however, it can also cause strength degradation if re-purposed in too high a concentration in underground mine backfill.  The research being done at CanmetMINING related to the bioleaching process is aimed not only at recovering nickel and cobalt from mine tailings, it is also being used in an attempt to neutralize the tailings to reduce acid mine drainage and backfill strength degradation. This paper reports on research designed to evaluate different options for transforming the bioleaching process residue into iron oxide phases, for better environmental footprints if stored on surface, as well as increased disposal possible, if re-purposed as underground mine backfill material.

Material can be seen as the fuel needed to execute the project from inception to completion. Material installed provides good indicators of progress achieved onsite vis-a-vis project schedule performance. It correlates well with the role of the schedule performance index (SPI) of the earned value method (EVM). Material is recognized to have a significant impact on achieved progress for physical completion of project activities. This paper presents a study on the development of material status index (MSI) in support of the EVM. Unlike the SPI, the newly developed index account for the criticality of project activities. This is carried out considering the total float of each activity, percent float (i.e. the ratio of float to activity duration) and the total float of the path on which the activity is located. MSI, can independently and jointly with SPI provide root causes behind problems encountered during project execution. In turn MSI can reveal material related factors behind the performance detected by joint interpretation of the two indices. MSI serves to provide added value in alerting management to take corrective actions. While SPI and MSI may have different values, they can jointly augment and enrich the captured project status based on EVM. To demonstrate the capabilities of the developed MSI method, it is implemented on a case study. The case encompasses the construction schedule of a hydro power station constructed in northern Quebec. Different scenarios are adapted from the real case to demonstrate a set of practical aspects of the developed index. The results generated from the analysis of the case study illustrate the useful features of MSI beyond those of the traditional SPI on two fronts; causation and the considerations of criticalities of actives.

In recent years, the microscope has come to be recognized as a valuable aid to engineers whose business is the discovery, development, concentration or reduction of metallic ores. In many of the large treatment plants microscopical research has already an important status; and in the hands of efficient operators the microscope has indicated methods of solving ore problems resulting in the saving of thousands of dollars that otherwise might have been lost in tailings, or expended in freight rates or smelter charges. Failure to procure all the information that the microscope can supply concerning the physical and mineralogical characteristics of complex ores has in many cases led to the construction of unsuitable concentrators, just as the failure to investigate in detail the geological conditions of an ore deposit has often results in the squandering of money on shaft sinking, and mechanical installations which subsequent development of the deposit failed to justify. The great progress recently made in the selective separation of minerals by means of the various processes of flotation and leaching brings strongly to our attention, the scope of the field in which microscopical methods may be advantageously employed. The microscope enables one to observe the minute details of rock, ore, gangue, concentrate, tailing, matte, slag and metal, that are invisible to the naked eye. Furthermore, the technique of microscopal research has been so highly developed that a microscopist can not only observe, but deter-mine the compositions and measure the diameters of the mineral constituents in the ore to be treated. Magnifications of these constituents up to 3,000 diameters may be produced by the proper combination of eyepiece, objective, and projection apparatus, and the images thus viewed may be photographed through the microscope, and permanent records made of them.

"SINCE their inception, the mineral industries have, from time to time, been confronted by various and sundry problems. These have been identified, attacked and solved by means of a slow methodical process peculiar to these industries. During the past decade, these industries have experienced increasing difficulty in attracting and retaining an adequate supply of manpower. This poses a situation which seems to be unlike those that came before it in that it appears to be immune to those methods of attack which were successful in the past. Despite various attacks upon the problem, its seriousness appears to be increasing at an increasing rate. The point has now been reached where the President of AIME recently expressed the opinion that this is the most serious problem facing these industries at this time (1). Another observer has gone so far as to state, ""Given the motivation and the determination, the crisis in mineral education in Canada, can, in time be met. But it will take a generation if we Start DOW (2)"".Part of the difficulty arises out of the identification and assessment of the problem itself. For, although the manpower shortage has been developing over a fairly long period of time, there still appears to be no unanimity concerning its seriousness and the nature of the threat which it poses. Some observers continue to maintain that the current situation is not new at all, but is merely the reappearance of something old which is cyclic in nature. They observe that in the past there were numerous periods where the mineral industries encountered manpower shortages but that, in each instance, the situation eventually rectified itself. Furthermore, they draw attention to the fact that the current problem is not confined to the mineral industries but that in fact all industries are experiencing an increasing manpower shortage. They are therefore confident that if left alone the present problem will eventually disappear."

"Abstract-In recent years, several unsavory events in international mineral exploration, as well as several widely publicized project difficulties and failures have occurred. The report Setting New Standards has "raised the bar" and proclaimed a "commitment to continuous improvement... and change." We need to evolve from our "generally accepted" practices to more effective quality assurance policies, guidelines and standards. Several steps will be required to support the work of the "qualified persons" now wholly entrusted with technical and professional matters:• adopt a mineral development model and objectives appropriate to orient the selection of workmethods and verification procedures suitable to increase the profitability of these activities;• review the definitions and implications of the terms practice, guideline and standard;• review three quality assurance systems with emphasis on commitment of company management and complementary emphasis on systematic quality policies, plans and manuals (ISO 9000), continuous improvement through "profound knowledge" (Deming, 1986), and self-appraisal of continuous improvement and client satisfaction using the Qualimeter Guide (Québec Society for Quality);• determine, from the objectives of the mineral development model proposed and the problems often encountered, the requirements of resource/reserve estimation and the production feasibility study. To regain investors’ confidence and improve the returns from mineral development activities, an explicit commitment to quality by the board of directors and the management of every company is required.A number of mining companies have gained ISO 9002 certification for their operations but exploration companies should start by developing and implementing quality assurance guidelines and standards based on the ISO 9001 pattern, without achieving actual ISO certification in the short term. Both professional associations and industry organizations must be involved in the process of developing the required quality and continuous improvement guidelines and standards."

"The Company known as Rouyn Merger Mines, Limited, was formed in 1943 to take over the ownership of claims in Rouyn and Joannes townships formerly held by East Rouyn Mines, Limited, O'Neil Thompson Mines, Limited, and the Hosking-Cockeram Prospecting Syndicate. The NorandaSenneterre branch of the Canadian National railway passes in an approximately east-west direction through almost the entire length of the property. Since 1937, sixty-three diamond drill holes have been drilled from the surface to cross faults on the contact of the Timiskaming sediments with the Abitibi ( Keewatin) volcanics, along which ore has been found to occur. Late in 1945, the sinking of a 3-compartment inclined shaft in the andesite agglomerate beneath the ore zone was commenced. On January 17th, 1947, this shaft had a depth of 944 feet; cross-cuts have been driven north-northwest from the shaft at 150-foot intervals from depths of 200 to 800 feet on the shaft (Fig. 2).GEOLOGYThe western or East Rouyn part of the Rouyn Merger property in which ore is being mined adjoins the area owned by McWatters Gold Mines, Limited, on the east and is underlain by the eastern continuation of the McWatters formations. As at the McWatters, the rocks belong structurally to three areas: (1) the territory north of the Cadillac-Bouzan Lake fault, occupied almost wholly by Abitibi ( Keewatin) volcanics; (2) the area along the south boundary of the property, underlain by Timiskaming conglomerate and greywacke; and (3) the synclinal belt of McWatters volcanics and sediments between areas 1 and 2.1Bouzan fault of Hawley."

Such exploration programs must be under the supervision of the Qualified Person who will be responsible and accountable for the planning, execution and interpretation of all exploration activity as well as the implementation of quality assurance programs and reporting. These guidelines are also recommended for use in the planning and execution of exploration programs which will not be reported under NI 43-101. This set of broad guidelines or ""best practices"" has been drawn up to ensure a consistently high quality of work that will maintain public confidence and assist securities regulators. The guidelines are not intended to inhibit the original thinking or application of new approaches, that are fundamental to successful mineral exploration.Results should be summarized and reported in a Technical Report of good professional quality in accordance with the National Instrument 43-101 and Form 1 contained in that instrument. All exploration work from which public reporting will ensue must be designed and carried out under the supervision of a Qualified Person (""QP""). A QP is defined in National Instrument 43-101 as an individual who is an engineer or geoscientist with at least five (5) years' experience in mineral exploration, mine development, mine operation or project assessment, has experience relevant to the subject matter of the project or report and is a member in good standing of a recognized professional association."

OWING to the pressure of routine analyses at the laboratory during the past year, work of an investigational nature on water problems has been greatly curtailed. Favourable reports by the boiler inspectors indicate that the operators are giving satisfactory attention to feed-water treatment at the several . power plants. Some of the operators prefer lime and soda, others the phosphate and soda treatment. Springhill is still on the same commercial treatment as they were using last year, and satisfactory results are being obtained. This individual preference for a particular treatment, although it may be different for feed waters of similar nature, indicates that so long as proper conditions of alkalinity and concentration are maintained within the boiler, it is immaterial what chemicals are used in the treatment. This statement refers, of course, to the low-pressure boilers. In high-pressure boilers, a treatment such as lime and soda cannot be satisfactorily employed, on account of the precipitated calcium carbonate unduly increasing the amount of suspended matter. Only one case of impending trouble was reported during the year. That was at Seaboard, shortly after the new unit was placed in operation. Dissolved oxygen, considerably in excess of the permissible 0.030 cubic centimeters per liter, was detected at various points on the feed line. It was suspected that a de-aerating heater was being operated at too low a temperature, and chemical tests, made before and after the necessary adjustments, proved that this was the source of the trouble. While it has been impossible to give mine waters the attention they require, progress can be reported in the work carried out by the Mechanical Department. Past investigation of the action of mine water on various acid-resisting alloys is now bearing fruit, and it can safely be said that repair work on mine pumps has been reduced by nearly one-half.

There are significant global environmental and supply issues with existing energy paths today . Global emission and fuel regulations, global fuel and power structure, energy security, and cost are driving new technology and non-conventional approaches . Fuel cells will play a significant role in the strategy to effect positive global change, increase fuel efficiency and decrease dependency on traditional fossil fuels. Fuel cells do not require recharging, just refuelling and a wide range of fuels are possible with hydrogen being the most desirable. Technical progress as well as investments in fuel cells for transportation, stationary, portable, and micro fuel cell applications have been dramatic in recent years. The present view is very optimistic for fuel cell power generation and the status is presently at the field trial level, or early commercialization stage, moving into volume commercialization. A number of demonstration programs are in progress worldwide such as the California Fuel Cell Partnership which involves original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), fuel providers, transit authorities, state and government bodies. Fuel cells and a hydrogen infrastructure are key to a long-term solution to global energy issues. Fuel cells will need to be competitive on an economic basis with the established and highly developed internal combustion engine and other forms of power generation There has been significant technical progress in a number of fuel cell areas including power density, transient / dynamic response, multiple fuels, cost potential, reliability and durability. However, significant technology gaps still remain today. This presentation will focus on the status and progress of the fuel cell today, current fuel cell research and development, the challenges going forward, and the future view of the fuel cell and it's impact on global energy issues.

"The Geology of the Cochenour Willans mine, Red Lake district, was described by J. P. Nowlan in the Jubilee Volume. The complexity and intense alteration of the rocks obscured any clear relationship between ore and structure, and Nowlan recognized that future work might greatly modify the ideas then existing. This has proved to be the case. Subsequent detailed work has established the stratigraphic sequence in the Keewatin formations which are the host rocks of the orebodies, and has shown that the principal orebodies are confined to two adjoining bands of tuff.On this basis, it is now possible to map the complex structures with greatly increased accuracy. The amount of drilling and underground exploration required to find new ore has been much reduced, and indicated ore reserves are now substantially greater than at any time in the past. Daily production in 1955 averaged 187 tons per day at 0.578 ounces of gold per ton.The sequence of Precambrian events in the mine area is summarized in the following table:Intrusion of post-ore dykes.Ore formation.Intrusion of post-faulting, pre-ore dykes.Deformation: folding and shearing; alteration; faulting.Timiskaming sedimentation.Unconformity.Keewatin: volcanics and sediments, host rocks of the orebodies, described in detail in the next section.KeewatinFrom oldest to youngest, the Keewatin rocks in the mine area can be divided into six formations, which have been given local names:“Grey"" LavaA fine-grained dacitic to andesitic lava, amygdaloidal and locally containing well formed pillows. "400 cubic foot Agitair Flotation Cells are in use at Sherritt Gordon's Fox and Ruttan Mine Cu-Zn concentrators. The 4 impeller model No. 120, used at the Fox Mine Operation, appears to offer superior agitation and aeration qualities compared to the single impeller model 120A, in use at Ruttan. The advantages of the model 120 are most significant with ores of high specific gravity and coarse grind.IntroductionSherritt is using 400 cubic foot Agitair flotation machines at both the Fox and Ruttan Mine Concentrators.At the 3000 tpd, Cu-Zn Fox concentrator, 18 model 120 machines have been in operation since May, 1969.The 10000 tpd, Cu-Zn operation at Ruttan utilizes 49 model 120A machines. The plant started operation in May, 1973.The 4-impeller model 120 flotation cell has been marketed by Galigher since the early 1960's but the single impeller model 120A is relatively new.Model 120 Agitair -Cell DataThe Model 120 (Dwg. 1) has floor dimensions of 101 x 10' and a lip height of 2~ to 4 feet to provide up to 400 cubic feet of volume. This machine is shown with a froth crowder and stabilizer plates which are optional.Each motor drives two agitators. 20 HP is recommended by Galigher but 25 HP is more realistic with massive sulphides. The SG of ?ox ore is about 3. 6.The Model 120 can handle up to 600 cubic feet of air per cell at 2 psig which requires 5-6 HP at the blowers. Air volume to each impeller is controlled by a valve from a main header.During the first 3 years of operation at Fox there were few mechanical problems with the 120's."

Introduction During the economic investigation of Pacific Great Eastern Railway subsidy lands, the P.G.E. Survey of Resources made a geological and mineral survey of a large part of the valley of the Peace river as included in the Province of British Columbia. The immediate valley of the Peace river was surveyed from the mountains to the Alberta boundary; the valley of the Pine river was surveyed throughout; and the Dominion block, 70 miles square and lying astride the Peace river, westward from the Alberta boundary, was very carefully surveyed. The writer was in general charge of the field work, and spent half the field season of 1929 and the field season of 1930 in the region . J. B. Bocock, however, did the major part of the work, spending two seasons, 1929 and 1930, in the area. General Conclusions The rock formations within the area discussed are all sedimentary and range in age from pre-Cambrian to recent. As might be expected, the minerals are in the main non-metallic, coal being by far the most important. Favourable conditions exist for natural gas occurrence, and suitable structures for petroleum concentration occur, although the high carbon ratio of the coals sheds considerable doubt upon the actual occurrence of oil in the area. Materials of minor interest are ochre, calcareous tufa, marl, limonite, gravel, and building stone.
