"Finance Minister Paul Martin's second budget might be good for Canada's mining industry in the long run, but the budget raises a number of concerns for the industry in the near term. The budget papers suggest that the 25% resource allowance is not working as intended, and report that the Department of Finance will be reviewing this valuable allowance. The so-called ""large corporations tax"" rate will be increased. Despite anecdotal evidence to the contrary, the mining industry is not in decline. Rather, the world?s largest mining companies are among the most consistently profitable companies in any industry. In many cases, profitable mining companies have been built around a few large scale, long life mines. These criteria for success ? size and long life ? have led to the current preference for deposits that can be exploited using open pit methods. However, developments in the science of block caving have resulted in this mining method achieving costs and productivities that are competitive with the largest open pits, while achieving widespread applicability. One implication of the low costs and widespread applicability of block caving is that some current open pits are possibly too deep.

Syncrude Canada Limited is presently studying commercial production of heavy minerals from plant tailings of the openpit A lhabasca tar sands operation. When tar sands are processed and upgraded to synthetic crude oil, heavy minerals can be removed f rom the extraction circuit and beneficiated to provide concentrates of zircon and titanium minerals. Calculated recovery rates indicate that crude oil production capabilities of 105,000 barrels per day would provide 26,000 tonnes of zircon and 114,000 tonnes of titanium minerals annually. The titanium minerals concentrate is a mixture of ilmenite, leucoxene and rutile; it could be used as recovered or upgraded to synthetic rutile. With the consrruction of further synthetic crude oil plants in Western Canada, a large reserve of heavy minerals will become available.

The CANMET Western Research Centre (CWRC) has developed a hydrocyclone model simulation of dewatering and fine particle separation circuits. The simulation is based on an existing empirical model. Utilizing a cyclone manufacturer’s published data, some modifications have been developed and integrated into the model. Feed stream characteristics, cyclone mechanical dimensions, and operating conditions are used in the CWRC modelling simulation. The computer results are presented in 3D graphs and corresponding 2D maps showing the cyclone mass recovery, percent solids by mass in underflow and overflow, and cut size as functions of the cyclone apex diameter and cyclone throughput (i.e., inlet pressure or pressure drop). Results of the computer simulation have been used in the economic feasibility and design of several dewatering circuits in oil sand plants.

"The Regal Silver mine is 5 miles north-northwest of Albert canyon; a station on the main line of the Canadian Pacific railway; 21 miles east of Revelstoke; British Columbia.Development, commenced in 1918, comprises more than 8,000 feet of workings from six adits, one of which extends into the Regal Silver property from the adjacent Snowflake ground. Production has been limited to a little tungsten concentrate recovered recently from a few r..undred tons of ore treated in a small underground mill. The property has received some attention as a possible source of tin. The deposits are large quartz veins containing irregular sulphide bodies. Ore minerals normally make up less than 1 per cent of the veins and include pyrite, galena, sphalerite, scheelite, and stannite. The veins are approximately parallel with the bedding of the enclosing graphitic, siliceous to calcareous, slates and argillites. These strata are of Precambrian age, strike about northwest, and dip northeast. No other rocks are known in the vicinity of the workings . Granitic rocks, intrusive into t'he sediments, outcrop 4 miles to the southwest and 7 miles to the northeast and may underlie the property at no great depth."

"Aqueous slurries of fine particle size calcium carbonate are used in a diverse range of end-use products. In many cases, the end-use performance is governed by the fineness of the particle size distribution. In turn, the maximum fineness of the particle size distribution is primarily determined by the efficiency of the dispersants used during the production process. Here, we report the sodium polyacrylate mediated dispersion of calcite and kaolin. Firstly, we report a colloid chemical description of the dispersant behaviour and attribute the stabilization to both steric and electrostatic mechanisms. Secondly, we describe how the understanding developed in the first part of the study can be utilized to produce more effective dispersant systems which allow the preparation of added value, higher solids and finer particle size calcium carbonate slurry products. IntroductionConcentrated aqueous dispersions of fine particulate kaolin and calcium carbonate are used extensively in the coating of paper. Currently, more than 10 Mt of such dispersions are used annually in North America and Europe alone, and worldwide consumption is growing at around 3% per year.Generally, paper is coated to enhance its visual appearance. Firstly, coatings improve the optical properties of the blank sheet, i.e., its brightness (or whiteness), opacity and gloss. Secondly, they improve the physical properties of the sheet that will influence the quality of the final printed image, such as surface smoothness, porosity, and ink absorption. In order to achieve these aims economically, paper coatings must be applied at high speeds and with minimal drying costs.Kaolin and calcium carbonate pigments are the major components of most paper coating formulations. Particle size distributions are chosen to maximize the optical benefits that they confer, and to allow the production of formulations that can be easily pumped, handled and coated. Coating pigments are generally produced and transported as slurries, and so it is important to obtain dispersions with the highest possible solids content, both to minimize drying costs and the quantity of water transported. This paper examines the dispersant technology that is currently used in the industry and the mechanisms by which it functions, and illustrates ways in which this technology has developed and could be further improved in the future."

This paper describes some of the main aspects involved in implementing the European “Equipment and Protective Systems for Use in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres” (ATEX) Directive (No.94/9/EC) in the British mining industry by the year 2003. It provides a brief background to the Directive and considers its main objective of removing all barriers to trade in Europe. It outlines the need for the European Standards making bodies to write new editions of the ’explosion protection concept standards’ and for manufacturers to adopt new quality management procedures and develop new versions of equipment in conformity with the ATEX categories of “M1” or “M2.” Finally, it assesses the possible future relationship between the European enforcing authorities, manufacturers and users of explosion protected equipment.

This paper, dealing with network planning in an industrial complex, discusses the type and size of project that can be handled on a manual basis. After a review of the fundamentals of network planning, and specifically of the Critical Path Method, the author analyses several different types of projects, each with its own characteristics. Some can be handled in conjunction with a computer, but others can be dealt with equally well without one. Among the projects discussed are a blast furnace reline, the installation of a billet mill flying shear, and routine maintenance-type operations.

During the past 10 years, research work to improve the survey of stope limits after mining supplied useful information, particularly for large open and sub-level stopes, regarding waste dilution caused by differences between final production limits and planned stope limits. However, the efficiency of this information to improve the overall efficiency of the mining process is limited, given that the impacts of inaccurate ore limits leading to dilution (sensu stricto) and ore losses haw not been considered adequately. Geological/sampling information should be optimized in terms of quantity and/or quality for the deposit characteristics and the constraints of the mining method used. As industry practice regarding the definition and recording of dilution is flexible and as ore losses frequently am poorly doc-umented, the use of these terms is reviewed. Simulations were carried out on two typical narrow gold deposits, based on an earlier study at Inco's Thompson mine regarding the impacts of wide to narrow delineation grids using recorded variations of vein geometry. Vertical to sub-vertical deposits of 3 m and 6 m widths mined by long-hole open stopes were considered. Deposits delineated by 7.5 m (25 ft) grids were taken as a base case and the impacts of less accurate limits in conjunction with long hole mining based only on a 15 m (50 ft) delin¬eation grid. The impacts of overestimation (dilution) and underestimation (metal losses) were considered separately, using the average error of +/-0.62 m recorded in the Inco study. The impact of less accurate information was much stronger on the narrower deposit: both dilution and ore losses diminished the net present value of the 3 m wide deposit by 39.27% and 45.41%, respectively, and that of the 6 m wide deposit by 12.84% and 11.55%. As the impacts of ore loss and those of dilution on the net present value am almost identical in these simulations, we could, in practice, assume a 50/50 split between dilution and ore losses in such a case. These results do no take into account the effects of local optimization measures taken at the mine production level (blasthole sampling near stope limits, etc.) The potential impacts of geological and sampling uncertainties in terms of lower NPV justify and require more systematic efforts to ensure that deposit appraisal work and feasibility studies are adequate to optimize company revenue and competitive returns to investors from mine production activities.

The topic of the relationships between energy and particle size has had two very active periods -the first in the early thirties, when the relative merits of Rittinger's and Kick's proposals were vigorously debated; the second in the early fifties, when Bond's Third Theory was published. This second stage has produced several contributions that have provided a clearer picture of energy /size correlations in comminution. Derivations of a general relationship have been made from single-fracture experiments and from the rate of comminution, and both methods arrive at an equation of the type E = AK-11? The constant A in the equation may be regarded as a grindability parameter. In some respects, an understanding of the phenomena associated with comminution is still lacking, and research in this field should therefore be expanded. FIELD PARTIES of the Geological Survey of Canada have, in recent years, mapped several areas east and northeast of Flin Flon (9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 118) (1). In all these areas the mineral deposits show a close geographical relation to faults although the immediate control of most of the known ore deposits appears to be folded structures in the rocks (8, 11, 18, 19). Air photographs and published geological maps were studied in order to ascertain whether or not the mineral deposits in the Flin Flon-Snow Lake mineral belt as a whole show any spatial relationship to faults. It was found that most of them do show a distinct geographical association with faults, or with topographic features that may be faults. It is further apparent on air photographs that a major lineament, for composite of lineaments, follows approximately the contact between gneisses and schists of the Kisseynew complex on the north, and Amisk volcanic rocks on the south. However, this Kisseynew lineament is not continuous and, especially in the eastern half of the district, it is exceedingly irregular in plan. Parts of this lineament have been mapped as faults (9, 10, 12, 14), other parts have been shown as stratigraphic contacts (1, 2, 21, 27), and still other parts have not been studied except by reconnaissance methods. It is suggested that the Kisseynew lineament may be due to a deformed fault that extends easterly from a point about 25 miles west-northwest of Flin Flon to a point at least 10 miles northeast of Wekusko lake and that the mineral deposits.

It is almost exactly two hundred years since the foundations of the mining and metallurgical industries in Canada were laid. There '."'as nothing spectacular about this early start. It had to do with the most basic phases of these industries-the mining of coal and iron ore, and the manufacture of cast and wrought iron. At several points along the coast of Cape Breton island, coal seams may be seen outcropping quite conspicuously, and it is probable that they had been observed, and possibly worked in a small way, in very early times. However that may be, these coal seams have the distinction of being the first in North America of which there is any printed record, reference to them appearing in a volume by Nicolas Denys which was published in Paris in 1672. Regular coal mining in the district did not commence until about fifty years later, however. The metallurgists started their operations along the north shore of the St. Lawrence river. Here, at many points between Montreal and Quebec, are to be found deposits of bog iron ore, and in 1 730 a furnace for smelting such ore was established on the St. Maurice river. The St. Maurice forges continued in operation until 1880, and throughout that long period they were famed for the fine quality of castings produced, and also for a-superior wrought iron.

ABSTRACT The influence of using different extraction processes (caustic versus non-caustic) on thethixotropic strength of oil sands fine tailings is examined, as is the influence of adding a coagulant tocaustic fine tailings. The thixotropic strength of fine tailings at large void ratios manifests itself as a bonding or gel strength that has been widely noted both in the laboratory and in the field. This gel strength has a significant influence on preventing the initial consolidation or settlement of fine tailings. Differences between the fine tailings’ thixotropic strength development are explained based on their physical and chemical characteristics.

More than 700,000 feet of diamond drilling was completed in the Blind River area between 1953 and 1958. Much of this drilling was at depths which are still not usual in North America. However, as the tendency is to deeper holes, factual data from the Blind River operation may well provide information of value in future programs. Rates of drilling decreased with in-creasing depth, but uncommonly good rates (an average of over 50 feet per day over more than 4,000 feet of hole) were achieved with proper engineering and care. Costs varied as contractors and geologists became familiar with the area Hole deviation in the Blind River area was locally severe and control of the hole trace became a major problem. Careful surveying was necessary and found to be highly re-liable. It was found that control of the hole trace above 1,500 feet was much more difficult than at depths below 1,500 feet. In the Yellowknife geologic province, 2,600-million-year-old granites are cut by three sets of diabase or gabbro dyke : (1) large dykes striking 70°E to E-W, (2) rare dykes striking N-S to 30°E and (3) an abundant swarm striking N 10°-300W. Preliminary potassium-argon dating has been carried out on whole-rock samples of the chilled margins and coarse centers of the dykes, and on mineral separates from the dykes and contact aureoles. Data from seventeen dated samples suggest that the dyke sets were intruded during three periods of basaltic magmatism -2,200, 1,500 and 1000 million years ago. The two earlier periods closely follow the time of emplacement of granites in the Yellowknife and Churchill geologic provinces. The latest diabase dykes occurring in the Yellowknife province are temporally related to a widespread basaltic magmatism, for which the term Keweenawan is not appropriate. Research thrives on ideas, and the theoretical considerations of today are either the discarded notions or the proven facts of tomorrow. The progress made in the past fifty years in the acquisition of knowledge of petroleum geology is no less astounding than is the tremendous increase in the production of oil on the North American continent from 61 million barrels in 1897 to 1,917 million barrels in 1947, an increase of 3,300 per cent, with production of natural gas expanding from less than 400,000 Mcf in 1897 to approximately 4,500,000,000 Mcf, or an increase of 11,000 fold in the same period. In the search for and discovery of the oil and gas fields that have yielded such prolific wealth, no idea has had a more profound effect than has the ?anticlinal? theory of oil accumulation, propounded in 1844 by Sir William Logan, the founder of the Geological Survey of Canada, after noting the position of oil seepages on the crests of anticlines in Gaspe peninsula. Sir William apparently was not much impressed with his own idea at this time, but after the Drake well discovery in 1859 and the publication by Henry D. Rogers, of Glasgow University, formerly of the Pennsylvania Geological Survey, of a paper in which he pointed out that the seepages in Pennsylvania were on anticlines, T. Sterry Hunt, an associate of Sir William Logan on the Geological Survey of Canada, published a reasonably comprehensive statement of the anticlina theory in the Montreal Gazette on March 1st, 1861. Hunt recognized the fact that the oil ?being lighter than the water which everywhere penetrates the rocks below the water level, naturally rises and accumulates along the crown of these anticlines". This was a recognition of the fact that gas, oil, and water in an anticlinal structure separate according to buoyancy or specific gravity. For some years the anticlinal theory does not seem to have attracted much attention, but when I. C. White in 1883 revived it and put it to practical use by prospecting for 'anticlinal' oil an gas structures in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky, its real value not as a theory but as a fact became widely recognized. Even today, the search for anticlines as oil and gas structures is being vigorously continued. In the past fifty years, however, it has become widely recognized that petroleum and natural gas collect in many different types of structures, and these have become known by the general name of 'traps'. About 1890, terrace structures were highly regarded because it was thought certain oil fields in Pennsylvania, New York, and Ohio were directly related to them. However, as Wilson (2, p. 437) has pointed out, it is recognized to day that ?'wherever the surface evidence is complete and dependable, other factors (than the terrace structure) are found to be in control'.

Future nuclear reactor systems such as a sodium-cooled fast reactor are being designed under severe conditions in terms of operating temperature and irradiation fluence compared to current commercial reactors. For realization of such systems, it is necessary to develop an advanced structural material having both high strength and irradiation resistance at high temperatures. Oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steel is considered as one of the most promising structural material because of its excellent creep and irradiation resistance on the basis of uniformly distributed nano-oxide particles with a high density. Up to now, ODS steels have been intensively studied and developed to apply these materials to the in-core structural component of future nuclear systems. Several advanced ODS steels were designed and fabricated by a mechanical alloying, hot isostatic pressing and hot extrusion processes. This study focuses on the effects of heat treatment parameters during the fabrication process parameters on the microstructures of ODS steels for future nuclear system applications.

"The Lonmin Base Metal Refinery treats converter matte from the Lonmin Smelter to produce nickel sulphate crystals, copper cathode as well as a concentrate containing the platinum group (PGM) metals. The original process employed a Sherritt design and utilizes atmospheric and pressure leaches for the dissolution of base metals. This paper describes the original flow sheet and the improvements made to enhance PGM recoveries, product quality and to increase capacity. Changes include the introduction of flash recycle cooling on the autoclave, batch leaches to improve the quality of the PGM concentrate and the implementation of solid-liquid separation with centrifuges. INTRODUCTIONThe Lonmin Base Metal Refinery (BMR) is about 100 km north-west of Johannesburg and treats converter matte from the Lonmin Smelter to produce nickel sulphate crystals, copper cathode and a concentrate containing the PGMs. The plant was commissioned in 1985 based on a Sherritt design to treat 12 tonnes converter matte per day. The original flow sheet consists of a milling circuit, an atmospheric leach and a pressure leach to produce a PGM concentrate which is despatched by helicopter to the Lonmin Platinum refinery in Brakpan, about 40 km east of Johannesburg. The liquor from the atmospheric leach is treated by crystallization to produce a nickel sulphate hexa-hydrate crystal. The leach liquor from the pressure leach is treated by a selenium removal step followed by electro-winning to produce copper cathode. The spent solution from the copper electro-winning is recycled to both the atmospheric and pressure leach steps to provide sulphuric acid for the leaching reactions.Modifications were made to the original circuit to increase the plant capacity, to improve the PGM recoveries and to improve the quality of the PGM concentrate. Capacity increases included all the unit operations, new mill, new first stage, additional autoclaves, additional nickel sulphate crystallizers, new copper electro-winning and new batch leach reactors for upgrading the PGM concentrate. The current circuit is described in this paper and not the detailed history of each plant change."

"The Voisey’s Bay mill processes a high-grade pentlandite and chalcopyrite ore in a largely pyrrhotite/troilite matrix. From 1994 to 1997, circuit development focused on making a 14% nickel concentrate. When flowsheet development resumed in 2001, the target grade was raised to 20% ni. initially triethylene tetramine and sulfite pyrrhotite depressants were used in a lime circuit, but by recycling process water and the contained thiosalts, the required nickel grade was made without depressants. construction of the mill was fast-tracked, with start-up in september 2005. ramp-up was faster than other recent nickel installations, with tonnage being limited by concentrate dewatering due to higher-thanexpected ore grades.RÉSUMÉ l’usine de traitement de Voisey’s Bay traite un minerai à teneur élevée en pentlandite et chalcopyrite dans une matrice formée surtout de pyrrhotite/troïlite. By the end of 1995, the ovoid had been well explored, and at that time was thought to have a reserve of at least 30 million tonnes (Mt), with an average grade of 2.83% ni and 2.0% cu (naldrett, singh, Krstic, & li, 2000). Drilling to the east of the ovoid indicated the presence of significant mineralization. in June 1995, inco limited bought a 25% share in the Voisey’s Bay nickel company (VBnc), which was a subsidiary holding company set up by Diamond Fields. inco also bought 8% of Diamond Fields and negotiated the right to sell all the nickel produced from VBnc for 20 years as part of this agreement. in april 1996, inco bought Diamond Fields and acquired the remaining 75% of VBnc shares."

In 2009 Newmont Mining Corporation?s annual global spend on grinding media reached $94M USD, having doubled in the five years since 2004. The major contributing factor to the spend escalation during this period was unit consumable price, with total media consumption also rising as a function of annual ore tonnes milled. In an effort to better understand and manage the growth of this expenditure a significant supply chain management program was implemented. This was complemented by a series of technical initiatives focussed on grinding media specifications, quality management and the prediction of grinding media wear rate as a function of physical ore characteristics. This paper discusses the methodology and outcomes of these activities.
