"The McClean uranium deposits are located 11 km west northwest of the Rabbit Lake Mine. Their average grade is 1.8 % U3O8 , and they contain 6. 350 tonnes of uranium oxide in seven pods of variable grade and mineral assemblage. They are hosted by both basal Athabasca Group and the regolith developed on the underlying crystalline basement. The major mineral facies are: sulphide, arsenide, 'bleached', and hematite, with the important uranium minerals being coffinite, uraninite and pitchblende. Abundances of carbon and sulphur isotopes are consistent with their derivation from pyritic graphite in basement gneisses. Isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen suggest equilibration at temperatures of about 200°C. Ar39/ Ar40 age determination of illite associated with ore suggest mineralization began about 1300 m.y. ago and that significant alteration had ceased by about 1170 m.y. ago though Pb/ U data suggest the deposits continued to evolve into the Mesozoic.IntroductionThe McClean deposits lie on the eastern side of the Athabasca Basin of northern Saskatchewan where they are part of a cluster of uranium deposits lying west of Wollaston Lake (Fig. 1). The general stratigraphy is schematically portrayed in Figure 2 which emphasizes that mineralization is hosted by both the Athabasca Group and the underlying regolith and also that the deposits are preserved at depth and have not suffered from preand post-Pleistocene weathering and erosion. This circumstance, combined with their simple shape and the presence of seven separate zones of mineralization (pods) allows a description, based on over 450 fully cored drill holes, to be made of the wide variation in chemistry, grade, alteration patterns and position relative to the sub-Athabasca Group unconformity. Ar39 / Ar40 age determinations have been made of illites associated with regolith, Athabasca Group and mineralization and studies are in progress on C, S, 0 and H isotopes of mineralized material and host rocks. Only some of these data have been published; Brummer et al., (1981); Golightly et al., (1982); Bray et al., (1982); and Saracoglu et al., (1983). The only other published data on McClean geology are by Tremblay (1982, 1983)."

"On July 26, 2000, the Canada Foundation for Innovation announced an award of $1.3 M dollars for The Centre for Environmental Research in Minerals, Metals and Materials, CERM3, at The University of British Columbia. Additional funding was also provided by the British Columbia Knowledge Development Fund ($1.3 M) and the UBC Stewart Blusson Fund ($0.7 M). Annual industrial grants and contracts are providing support funding for the on-going research projects. Corporate membership in CERM3 entitles each participant to a seat on the technical advisory committee (TAC) as well as access to the five laboratory facilities currently under construction. Both the federal and provincial governments will also participate in the TAC through NRCan-CANMET and the BC Ministry of Energy and Mines, respectively. CERM3’s mission is:• to develop innovative methods to deal with environmental problems created by mining activity;• to promote sustainable development as a hallmark of management decision-making; • to produce mining and processing engineers with the required environmental skills; and• to enhance the image of mining in society as a vibrant and necessary component of a modern economy and society which disturbs the environment for the benefit of mankind.CERM3 brings together a multi-disciplinary team of researchers from over 12 departments at The University of British Columbia (UBC) to work on mining-related environmental problems. These include: chemistry; soil sciences; chemical and biological engineering; earth and ocean sciences; microbiology; civil engineering; electrical engineering; metals and materials engineering; mechanical engineering; mining and mineral processing, the Westwater Research Centre; the Institute for Resources and the Environment; and the School of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene. The centre intends to interact with scientists from industry, governments and other universities across Canada and around the world. CERM3 aims to become Canada’s leading environmental research facility for the mining industry. This paper describes the evolution of CERM3 and its coordinated multi-disciplinary approach to mining and the environment. Some of CERM3’s research projects include:• developing new protocols for environmental analyses to provide consistent and reliable assays;• isolating a natural virus for Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and other bacteria responsible for acid rock drainage (ARD);• designing bio-remediation and adsorption techniques for mine effluents;• promoting and enhancing the use of hydrometallurgy to reduce environmental pollution;• examining new approaches to comminution to decrease energy consumption;• developing a magnetically levitated hoisting system to reduce the footprint of a mine operation;• building a state-of-the-art supercomputer network laboratory for mine/mill simulations; and• designing intelligent bulkheads to seal tunnels following mine closure to survive for 1000 years.This latter project involves the establishment of a research station at the Britannia mine site, 45 km north of Vancouver, which will provide a full-scale facility to design the “Millennium Plug” and contribute directly to the solution to one of North America’s worst ARD-contaminated sites."

"The Porgera orebody is located in mountainous terrain in Enga Province, Papua New Guinea. An underground mine has been developed which produces up to 2000 t/d of ore grading over 2 ozs Au/t. Some 79% of the gold in the ore is free, with the balance in a highly refractory form as sub-microscopic gold evenly disseminated within a pyrite matrix.This paper describes the metallurgical plant that uses flotation and cyanidation circuits to effectively recover the free gold in the ore feed, allowing for wide variation in the gold head grade. The refractory gold component in the ore is stored as leached pyrite flotation concentrate and this concentrate will be later treated by autoclaving techniques to recover the contained gold.The ProiectThe property is located in the Porgera Valley 600 Km North West of Port Moresby. The remote location is 2500 m above sea level. The mine area has 3600 mm of annual rainfall and a temperate climate with temperatures ranging from 10° c to 22° c throughout the year.Alluvial gold was reported in the Porgera area in 1938 and has been an important source of revenue for the area for many years. Intermittent exploration was carried out until the 1960 1 s when Placer (PNG) Pty. Ltd. with Mt. Isa Mines commenced an extensive exploration program. The property was brought to production in 1990 by the Porgera Joint Venture group consisting of Mount Isa Mines Ltd, Rennison Goldfield Consolidated Ltd. and Placer Dome Inc, each with a 30% ownership and the Government of Papua New Guinea with a 10% share. Placer Dome Inc. is the manager of the property with construction under the direction of the Placer Dome Technical Services group."

"Generally speaking, the most intensive efforts at dust control in the mining industry have, in the past, been concerned with underground operations and where uranium ore or high silica material is processed. In the past several years, Stoop Rock has made Intensive efforts to reduce dust levels in it's Iron ore pelletizing complex. There have been no great engineering break-throughs with regard to dust control in such plants, and certainly no new engineering techniques have had to be applied at Steep Rock. This paper deals with how significant improvements in dust levels have been achieved through minor modification to dust collectors and ventilation units, improvements in operating practices, and education of supervisors and hourly personnel.PROCESS DESCRIPTIONSteep Rock Iron Mines is located 120 miles west of Thunder Bay near Atikokan. "Petro-Canada's project investigative and experimental underground work in the Galt coal seam at Kipp, Alberta included the construction of an emergency egress and ventilation raise from surface.The Galt coal seam is 206 m below the surface and covered by 8 m of shale, sandstone and clay beds of the Oldman Formation, 128 m of shale, bentonite beds and sandstone of the Bearpaw Formation, and 70 m of glacial till and basal gravel. Free water was encountered from sand lenses in the glacial till and the basal gravel.Excavation for the ventilation raise was a nominal 2 m diameter and it was lined with a welded, continuous, steel liner of 1.2 m 1.D.Excavation in the glacial till was carried out with a surface bucket drill rig combined with hand mining. Ground support in the glacial till consisted of liner plates and backfill grout. The Bearpaw and Oldman formations were excavated by employing standard raise boring techniques. The individual liner sections of the continuous steel liner were assembled on surface and the entire liner column was lowered into the raise by employing hydraulic lift climbers. The liner column was back-filled with concrete.IntroductionThe Lethbridge Coal Field comprises an area of approximately 1 165 square km in the vicinity of Lethbridge in southern Alberta. Pacific Petroleums Ltd. proposed in a Preliminary Disclosure in January 1979 ""to open an experimental mine prior to development of a producing underground mine with an initial rate of 540,000 tonnes per year"". A 2 900-hectare group of leases in the Kipp-Coalhurst area was selected as the primary target for the Kipp experimental mine. The scope of work for the experimental mine included the construction of an access shaft with production capabilities, the construction of a ventilation and emergency exit raise, drive-ages in coal to yield a bulk sample, gathering of geotechnical information and the testing of experimental mining methods."

The Islamic Republic of Iran is a very important producer of raw materials in the world. The country holds 68 types of minerals, including salt, sand and gravel, chrome, lead, zinc, copper, coal, gold, and iron-ore. With more than 37 billion tons of measured and indicated reserves and 55 billion tons of total mineral resources, Iran is ranked among the 15 major mineral-rich countries. Sangan iron-ore mines (SIOM) is one of the biggest iron ore mining complexes in Iran, located in a remote, but strategically important area near the Afghanistan border. The Iranian government has planned several mining projects in this region for a stepwise development over the next 5 years to satisfy the growing demand of the Iranian steel industry. In cooperation with private companies, these projects shall be realized as sustainable as possible. This paper introduces SIOM and describes socially responsible activities undertaken during the initial development of this mining complex. The effects of these activities will be demonstrated. Unique attributes of the Sangan area have a significant impact on the acceptance of SIOM by regional stakeholders. The government has made several social investments that benefit workers´ families and the community. They are attempts to build social capital for the mining operations and demonstrate a commitment for socially responsible mining to the communities and the local population. They aim to create a balance between the local and regional expectations and requirements and the necessity to secure the corporate profitability at a reasonable and sustainable level. Investment in socially responsible activities is not a choice but a necessity to improve the relations between mining companies and stakeholders in the communities. It is recommended that social investments should be carefully planned and implemented from the early stages of mining activities, and should proceed throughout the life cycle of the mines.

"Gold is present in different forms and associations in different ores. Flotation is used to recover gold and minerals associated with gold, but the applicability and type of flotation vary. The purpose of flotation in a gold recovery plant is largely dependent on the mineralogical association of the gold, and environmental and economic considerations. In this paper, the role of flotation in the recovery of gold is reviewed. The paper will describe examples of gold recovery by flotation including flotation of native gold, gold associated with sulphides including specifically copper sulphides, gold associated with tellurides, gold ores containing carbonaceous material and gold contained in tailings.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is widely used in the recovery of gold. However, the objectives and the mode of application are quite variable dependent on the type of ore, the gold association(s), other metal values, marketing considerations and environmental requirements. In this paper, a range of different applications of flotation incorporated in the recovery of gold are discussed. The reasons for each particular application are outlined and metallurgical results are presented.The mineralogy of the ore and the gold associations are fundamental influences on gold recovery. The use of flotation to concentrate gold is dictated by the mineralogy of the ore and gold. The fundamental factors are mineral/gold size, liberation size, association of the gold and type of gangue minerals or other valuable minerals. Gold can exhibit a range of sizes in a host from relatively large size (+50 µ) to refractory size (1 µ and sub-micron size). Similarly, the gold can occur in a number of phases in the same host. For example, the gold was present as petzite (AgAu telluride), calaverite (AuTe2) and native gold in a gold telluride ore and each of these minerals was associated with the pyrite host.Understanding the gold mineralogy and association is important in establishing the correct process route. The gold mineralogy is established by good mineralogy, use of diagnostic tools such as diagnostic leaching and assay by size fraction analyses and basic metallurgical testwork."

"Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited operates two mines; one open pit (No. 6) and one underground (No. 12), approximately 20 miles south-west of Bathurst, New Brunswick. Both are massive sulphide deposits containing copper, lead, zinc and silver. The No. 12 property began operation in 1963 and is presently being mined at a rate of 3600 tons per day underground and is in the completion stages of an expansion to achieve 11,000 tons per day underground by the end of 1930.Originally at Brunswick Mining, acid mine drainage was added to tailings and neutralized by an excess of lime in the tailings. A conventional recycle system was established with a biostabilization pond for the treatment of thiosalts, a liming station and sludge settling area for neutralization of acidic water and a final reclaim pond with a pumping station for reclaim water.We found that not more than one third of the reclaim water could be used as it upset the flotation circuit every time it was used. It was established that the mine water and surface drainage were the cause due to oils and detergents in the water. It was also found that the biostabilization pond method Cf thiosalt treatment was not efficient for year round operation in our climate.In 1974, we reviewed the problems and began a 3 phase program to control effluents from the property:"

A working group from Anglo American, BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and Xstrata reviewed supply and demand for graduates from mining education departments in countries where they normally recruit: Australia, Canada, Chile, Western Europe, South Africa and USA. Departments are typically small and increasingly unsustainable, resulting in a steady rate of closure. Supply and demand for graduates in the minerals industry is cyclical, with supply lagging behind demand and trending downwards. Currently, supply is tight and the industry is trying to expand with an ageing workforce. Greater collaboration between universities and within the industry is recommended to address these issues.

"The challenges encountered in the design and construction of mines and their process facilities today are becoming more intense and the engineering more competitive. The need to incorporate new techno1ogy to compensate for ever rising costs is always present, but its application in the harsh environment of Northern Canada increasingly requires the inclusion of new proven methods and innovative approaches to arrive at economically attractive projects.This paper deals with the development of the process design for the Cullaton Lake Gold Mine in the Northwest Territories. Particular emphasis is given to the interaction of the imposed construction and testwork schedules, and their effect on certain process decisions.The challenge that faced the project team may be defined by the following factors:1. A schedule which required that metallurgical testing, engineering, and procurement and delivery of all equipment and construction supplies should be complete within a period of ten months.2. Transportation of all personnel, equipment and supplies to the site by airlift, as no road was available or affordable.3. A six week period when transportation to the site was impossible.4. The extremes of temperature beyond the tree line in the Northwest Territories.5. A complete lack of infrastructure in the area."

The mine of the year 2020 will need to be based on a new way of mining. It will employ technology in a paradigm that assumes responsibility for sustainable development: taking account not only economic but also ecological and social issues. This will require a holistic approach to mine design and planning, considering all controlling factors and impacts (technical, economic, environmental and social). A national collaborative strategy is required to address the several options that exist for the development and application of 2020 mining technology. Key issues in implementing 2020 mining technology will also relate to human resources, in terms of employment, skills and education. A need exists to proactively prepare for 2020 through development of a comprehensive education and training strategy.

New control techniques were added in subsequent years.An on-stream X-ray analyser was installed in 1968. It provided circuit analyses for six years without the aid of a computer. In late 1974, control of the flotation circuit by computer was incorporated into the system. Gold-on-carbon catalysts resulted very active and selective in liquid phase oxidation [1, 2, 3] and during past studies we established that activity is ruled by two factors: particle dimension and gold exposure on the carbon surface [4]. These two parameters are also connected to the nature of activated carbon where the chemical nature of the surface oxygenated groups probably plays an important role [5]. Our studies, focused on the design of an active gold-on-carbon catalyst for liquid phase application, were aimed, operating a fine tuning of all the parameters involved in determining activity, to optimize gold-on-carbon preparation, keeping in mind that gold particle activity increases with decreasing particle size and increasing gold exposure. Gold sol immobilisation represents a versatile methodology in preparing gold catalysts [6]: throughout this work we used as sol stabilizing agent, the N-dodecil-N,N-dimethyl-3-amino-1-propan sulphonate (SB), that provides both sterical and electrostatic stabilisation, a condition we already demonstrated necessary to preserve particle dimension when carbon is used as the support [6]. We generated different gold sols by varying the relative amount of reagents (HAuCl4, SB, NaBH4), the type of alkali and the temperature of the gold precursor reduction. Moreover, as we had recently evidenced that there is also a carbon effect [5], we employed only one active carbon to immobilize the sols.

"Decisions regarding mining method and subsequent choice of excavator must take into account the quantitative factors of productivity, availability, and capital, operating, and maintenance costs. Dig performance was compared between a hydraulic excavator (HE) and electric rope shovel (RS) of similar size class (i.e., use the same amount of energy to excavate a unit quantity of the same material from a mining face), focusing on the quantitative factors above. Machine performance, normalized to bucket capacity, was assessed as a function of hours of service (60,000 hours per machine). Results showed higher production rates for the HE of similar capacity and age. In general, the RS exhibited lower service cost per volume capacity, though it had higher capital cost. "This paper focuses on a number of interesting results to establish the theory and principle of air-deck blasting. It also gives the mechanism of breakage that takes place in air-deck blasting under varying charge load conditions. With these aspects in mind, the mine management can implement this up-coming technology to enhance safety and higher productivity. IntroductionThe method of air-decking has become an increasingly popular technique in production and presplit blasting. In the blasthole, an explosive column is combined with an airchamber. The main aim of the technique is to control breakage through effective distribution of explosive energy and thereby enhance uniform rock fragmentation. An air column lowers the initial pressure of the explosive products and simultaneously increases the time of interaction for the detonation front with the surrounding rock, which enhances rock breakage.To study air-deck blasting, CMRI initially conducted experiments using indigenously developed, low-cost wooden spacers of different sizes and strengths. Air-deck blasting was first tried using these spacers in 1993 at Jambad OCP, ECL and Chasnalla OCP, IISCO. The experiments were extended in 1994 at Bermo Mine, DVC. The results were subsequently published by Pal Roy et al., in 1995. It is worth mentioning that the performance of air-deck blasting during this period was only compared with conventional blasting practices without going into detail of the theory behind the process."

"The initial development of the massive potash deposits of the prairie evaporite formation took place over a decade ending in 1970. The potash mining and refining facility near Rocanvi11e, Saskatchewan was the 1ast of ten mines to come into production during that era. This operation, known as Sylvite of Canada Ltd., was designed to produce 1. 2 million short tons per year of KCl product in granular, coarse, standard and special standard grades.In 1977 the parent company, Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting, sold the Sylvite property to the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan. Shortly thereafter PCS slated its new Rocanville Division for a two phase program of expansion. The first phase, completed in the spring of 1979, was relatively small, involving mill debottlenecking and additional equipment in the compaction circuit and the product and ore storage areas. The second phase was a major undertaking which included additional mining equipment and a new 300 STPH milling circuit. This work was completed during the fall of 1981 and has increased the Rocanville Division's nameplate capacity to two million STPY.Thickening equipment operating in the Saskatchewan potash industry is generally situated within the main refinery building or a separate insulated and heated structure due to the harsh winter climate and the need to closely control plant brine temperatures to ensure good flotation circuit performance. Since these thickeners process large volumes of slurries, conventional basin type designs tend to be large, ranging up to 150 feet in diameter or more. As part of the general effort to minimize capital costs, the potash industry has begun investigating the use of alternate high capacity, compact thickener designs. In this regard, PCS Rocanville undertook a program in 1978 to evaluate a Lamella™ Thickener and one other type of 'High Rate' thickener* as alternatives to a conventional design for the phase two expansion project."
