Dilution and ore loss have an important bearing on the success of open pit mining projects. Their impacts on production costs, revenues and production rate require that they are correctly modelled in the long-term mine plan. The estimation of dilution and ore loss is therefore an essential part of any Ore Reserve estimate or mine schedule. Large open pit mines are driven by the economies of scale that are achieved at the cost of less selectivity in the discrimination of ore and waste. Planning for these mines is facilitated by the use of block models for mine design, scheduling and the conversion of Mineral Resources into Ore Reserves. This paper reviews various approaches to the estimation of dilution and ore loss, as implemented in computer block models. In the case of orebodies with well-defined sharp boundaries, rather than irregular stockwork mineralisation, the geological interpretation is a critical factor. Variability in the geometry of orebodies is common within large open pits and must be taken into account when estimating dilution and ore loss. A method of regularisation, controlled by the wireframed geological model, is demonstrated, using examples from large open pit stratiform copper and magnetite deposits. This can be carried out without special computer software modules.

INTRODUCTIONDuring the past few years there has been considerable interest in developing the so-called direct reduction processes for treating iron oxides. The various methods proposed were recently reviewed by Scortecci and Palazzi (1960).In particular the application of fluidized bed techniques received considerable attention and, on first examination, this seems to be the ideal method 'of dealing with fine iron oxides. Several difficulties (e.g. product agglomeration) require the method to be investigated further before its potentialities can be fully assessed.PROPOSED FLUIDIZED BED REDUCTION PROCESSESBrassert and De Jahn (1951) were among the earliest to suggest the use of fluidized beds for the reduction of iron ore to metallic iron. Their patent was followed by many others proposing similar concepts, mainly from Lewis (1955), Ogorzaly (19.56), Shipley (1956), Agarwal (1960'), Osborn (1958), Texaco Development Corporation (1956) and Stelling (1957).The H-iron process (Squires and J ohnson, 1957; Lubker and Bruland, 1960) is the only scheme that has been an economic success. The Mount Gibson goidmine is located at the southern end of the Retaliation greenstone belt within the Murchison Province, approximately 300 km northeast of Perth, Western Australia. Economic gold mineralization occurs in the upper part of a Tertiary lateritic surface; its ultimate source presumably being Archaean greenstones. Gold is present in the laterite profile over a distance of 4 km in four separate prospects, from north to south, Mount Gibson Well, Midway, Orion and Tobias Find, the two last constituting the Mount Gibson mine. The area has'low relief. A low ridge to the west of the mineralized zone is formed mainly of rubble with minor outcrops of mafic volcanic and intrusive rocks. The terrain slopes gently to the northeast, and the maximum relief, in the vicinity of the mineralization, is about 20 m. The weathering profile comprises, from the surface: (i) soil, windblown sand or colluvium (thin), (ii) laterite; hardcap (including ferricrete and lesser silcrete and calcrete) is overlain by loose nodules and pisolites, and passes downwards into a mottled zone of variably ferruginized clay, (iii) clay; mainly pale brown, cream or yellow in colour, but in places contains relic quartz veins or dark ferruginous zones, (iv) clay with fragments of altered rock; normally grey to pale green in colour but sometimes includes an oxidized iron-rich horizon just above the weathered/fresh rock interface, (v) bedrock. The complete profile varies from 10-100 m thick, averaging 20 m. Zone (ii) is commonly 3-5 m thick. Loose pisolites of this zone fill cavities in the massive ironstone left by former tree roots, and cover irregular depressions which may represent former stream courses. Samples, representing 3 m intervals down the holes, have been collected from cuttings taken from rotary drill-holes along each of four traverses; one traverse at each-of the northern prospects and two traverses in the Orion part of the mine area. These samples have been submitted for X-ray diffraction analysis and for chemical analysis for a wide range of elements. Bedrock lithologies have been determined from microscope studies of bottom-of-hole chips.

Concepts of facies are of proven worth in sedimentology, but have hitherto received little attention from volcanologists. The time is now ripe to develop facies schemes for volcanic products. This paper discusses possible facies applicable specifically to lava flows and ignimbrites, the intention being to explore possible approaches to the problem of recogniz- ing volcanic facies rather than attempting to develop a comprehensive facies scheme

Total Development - in which he cited urban development, and intensive agriculture. 2. Partial development - in which he cited pastoral, and in this category would come National Parks. 3. The topaz resource at Torrington in northern N.S.W is currently the subject of a joint research and development programme managed by Pacific Copper Ltd, This programme has culminated in a pilot topaz calcination plant, located at Parramatta, which, through its operation, will establish the commercial viability of developing this mineral as an industrial raw material for both the refractory and fluoride chemical industries.

The author has been involved in dealings with Aboriginal groups over this period. The zinc-nickel alloy process, TECHNIGALVA, was developed for the control of the thicknesses of zinc -coatings on reactive silicon-killed steels. These are steels containing between 0.04 and 0.15 per cent silicon which have become more common in recent years as more steel is produced by continuous casting. The introduction to this paper will review the current status of this process in Europe, North America and Australasia. It is well known that the presence of silicon at certain levels in steel can cause sufficient growth of intermetallic phases during galvanising to form a grey coating of excessive thickness. This type of coating is undesirable because it is brittle and has poor adhesion to the steel base. Since the early-1980s a widely accepted practice for suppressing the reactivity of steels containing silicon during general galvanising has been the addition of approximately 0.1 mass per cent nickel to the galvanising bath ie the TECHNIGALVA process. The paper will also discuss metallurgical aspects of the use of nickel in galvanising such as the mechanisms by which nickel suppresses reactivity, the structure and composition of the ternary Zn-Fe-Ni drosses formed when using nickel and the use of nickel in the galvanising bath at a level of about 500 ppm to give thinner, smoother and brighter coatings on steel.

I propose to speak today about our mineral heritage. In common usage "heritage" refers to the past. It means the discoveries, the developments, the mines and the processing plants, the benefits, the consequences, and the human experiences flowing from these. The history of the industry, inseparable from the history of the countries in which The Institute operates, is a rich background of which we can all be proud.But there is also a much wider meaning to mineral heritage. Our past has left us with the ab\lity to create and operate world scale enterprises generating wealth for the community, the ability to offer satisfying and challenging careers in a wide range of skills to our young people, and the willingness to follow adventurous and challenging vocations in remote areas, away from the big cities, at a time when the mentality of many is to get the most for the least effort and at the least inconvenience to themselves. The industry continues to be the repository of the pioneer spirit and a vital contributor to improving the life of the people in our countries.Thus, while our mineral heritage has much to do with the past, an essential part of it is how we use this rich past to build and shape our future. It is in this broader context that I am speaking today.

Generally when equipment is chosen for solving a dewatering problem, the equipment is based on one of following physical methods: gravity (sedimentation, screens), vacuum (vacuum drum and disc filters, belt filters), pressure (filter presses, hyperbaric filters) and centrifugal forces (centrifuges). The choice of method and type of equipment depends, among other things, on the requirements on the maximum water content allowed in the filter cake and on the particle size distribution and the concentration of solids in the material to be dewatered. All the above-mentioned equipment has its benefits and drawbacks. The conventional vacuum filters of drum or disc type are of a simple construction with few parts to be replaced, but these filters produce a filter cake with a fairly high moisture content, and a dryer is required for additional drying. In most cases the use of pressure makes it possible to produce filter cakes with the desired moisture content but the equipment is of complicated construction, leading to high maintenance costs . In addition to this the consumption of compressed air is high. The capillary filtration to be described in this article is a dewatering method which combines the benefits of both the conventional vacuum disc filter and the filter press. The capillary filter produces low cake moistures with a machine of very simple construction similar to that of the vacuum disc filter.

Although the flotation cell has been under continuous development over the past 80 years, an understanding of the precise roles of a cell in produc- ing the flotation result had evolved slowly. In fact, detailed studies of cell dynamics began only in the 1940s when flotation practice had almost reached the half-century mark. The earliest generalizations related cell capacity to power intensity (hp/vol- ume) (Rose, 1946), and specific operating features such as aeration and power ' consumption to impeller submergence and operating speed (Read, 1933). In the 1950s hydrodynamic characterization of cells through power coefficients and air flow numbers began (Arbiter and Harris, 1961) and has continued to the present, with increasing industrial use of these concepts (Degner, 1982; Degner and Treweek, 1976). Liquid flow measurements in Wemco cells (Degner, 1982) made liquid flow numbers and turnover frequencies available for more complete under- standing of cell dynamics. The present overview of flotation technology is a critique of cell design. The cell process represents the interactions between cell dynam- ics, cell geometry, and ores, with the latter prepared for that interaction through size reduction and reagent treatment. While previous invest- igations of flotation cells have accepted all cell designs uncrit- ically, the present study considers the physical process components that an effective cell must provide, and then compares a limited number of

The Paper discusses the size and extent of in-pit dust suppression problems created by iron ore mining in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Dust problems associated with drilling, loading, hauling and tipping are discussed indicating the large quantities of water which can be applied for dust control and attempts that have been made to rationalise this water usage to obtain maximum benefits from the applied water. The magnitude of the problem and the quantities of water involved can be appreciated when one realises that 275 000 tonnes of rock are moved on Mt. Whaleback each day and that there are 40 km of haulroad within the open pit. Initially dust suppression was limited to the spraying of haulroads by large water tankers. Now dust suppression is practiced during drilling and after blasting, wind blown dust is reduced by application, using water cannons,of large quantities of water to floor stocks prior to loading operations as well as by the installation of 16 km of automatically controlled fixed sprinkler reticulation on the main semi-permanent haulroads. The methods used to assess the water requirements for in-pit dust suppression are discussed and the extensive development testing used to evolve the present installations are 1. The economic valuation of mineral prospects usually involves DCF analysis of expected revenues and costs. Traditional approaches deal with price uncertainty by considering different price scenarios and may even consider cases where prices drop sufficiently for production to be suspended temporarily. This paper outlines recent extensions to the methodology derived from finance theory. We present a simple analytical model that focuses on the value of operational flexibility where future prices are uncertain.

The increased activity in the Australian gold industry over the last decade has resulted in a concomitant increase in the use of sodium cyanide, with a projected consumption of 80,000 tonnes per annum by 1991. Growing environmental awareness by government, industry and the public has generated increased interest in the fate of cyanide near gold mine tailings dams and has highlighted the lack of basic knowledge in this area, particularly for Australian conditions.

It is argued that the capture of par- ticles by bubbles is primarily caused by hydrophobic ("structural") attraction forces. Neither dispersion forces nor double-layer forces can account for hydro- phobicity, though the latter are known to influence the kinetics of capture. The recent experiments of Israelachvili and Pashley (Nature, 300: 341-342, 1982) with hydrophobic mica plates provide the first measurements of the range and magni- tude of hydrophobic interaction forces.

Evaluation of tyre chains has been taking place at King Island Scheelite for several years. Results indicate that tyre life has been greatly improved in all cases. Good cost sav- ings are resulting on small loaders. The worth of chains is difficult to prove on larger loaders under the conditions at King Island Scheelite. However, the dramatic decrease in the number of punctures has convinced the Company that chains are worthwhile on some larger loaders.

Details are given of the excellent performance, outside Australia, of steel slag in road pavement surfacing. Laboratory tests and plant trials have shown Port Kembla BOF steel slag to be a material with properties suitable for producing asphaltic concrete which will maintain a high skid resistance in service under heavy traffic. The high density of steel slag is a factor which will result in a cartage cost penalty likely to restrict usage to close to its source.

What is the real value of your data?Given that the cost of collecting and analysing an individual sample is always rising, it is important to understand the true value of a sample and that you are confident that you receive good value for your exploration dollar. Unfortunately too many samples are still collected today that will end up as worthless data; a liability to those who own it and a hindrance to finding that ore body.

Digital computer based control systems are used to implement control and monitoring over most unit operations in Mount Isa Mines Limited lead-zinc concentrator and copper concentrator. Implementation has been gradually devel- oped and expanded since the first process computer installation in 1969. Operations currently using high level control logic include crushing, grinding, on-stream analysis of flotation products, flotation reagent additions, and tailings thickening. Details of gains in metallurgical efficiency for each system are considered.
