This paper considers the standard of ore reserve assessments required by lenders when presented to support requests for project based loans. The way lenders use this information to structure a suitable financial package shows why ore reserves should be measured by industry set standards. This in turn raises questions concerning the assumptions used to derive mineable reserves from geological reserves. Consideration of the variety of related problems highlights the need for assessments to be defined according to acceptable standards. These should also address the suitability of the methodology to the assumed configuration of the orebody; the degree of variance and relaibility of estimates of grade and tonnage presented; and the estimation of probability that ore will in practice fall within the defined limits. In an increasingly international marketplace it is appropriate to compare Australian industry requirements to those of similar overseas industries, in this case the United States. Lenders would like to see that individuals responsible for the preparation of ore reserve estimates are certified on the basis of their skill and expereince by an industry body such as The AusIMM. The paper discusses how each of the parameters indicated above may impact upon a lender's assessment of the viability of a project. A number of practical examples are presented where inaccuracies or inadequacies in ore reserve information have led to reduced project performance.

Hindered settling devices (teeter bed, up-current) are widely used in the mining industry to classify mineral streams into various size fractions and to separate minerals. In the coal industry these devices are extremely successful in separating coal of low densities from shale and pyrite. In the beach sand and in the iron ore industry, this equipment is used to beneficiate minerals either as stand alone units or lately as classifiers in spiral circuits. The challenge that these applications give to metallurgists is to be able to simulate the equipment by using mathematical models with or without the aid of small bench scale tests. In any green fields and many brownfields projects, limited amounts of samples make pilot plant tests difficult. Although there are mathematical approaches available, the accuracy is of such a nature that it can not be used for design purposes. This refers to the use of StrokeÆs law, NewtonÆs and the so called intermediate law as is widely published. Research done by the author indicates that in most applications none of the above laws apply. Using the original data as published by Perry and Chilton (Chemical Engineering Handbook, pp 5-64, 1973) and re-plotting it indicates that the settling velocity of particles is a function of (particle diameter)n where n varies between 1.2 and 1.6 which is different from that predicted by the intermediate law that suggests that n = 1.18. Another way of describing the relationship between the drag force and the Reynolds number is done by iterating between settling velocity and the Reynolds number. This needs more computer time but the accuracy obtained from this does add value to simulations. A small but simple test is suggested to determine the settling velocity of particles to enable metallurgists to determine variations from the theoretical calculations to determine the influence of viscosity and particle shape.

Increasing the strength of backfill has been the subject of much research. In the former Soviet Union most methods concentrated on the fill mixture including chemical additives, binder re-grinding, water electromagnetic activation and the use of vibration and turbulent activation. For the most part, this research has been confined to the laboratory where the results were not representative of field conditions. These methods also were directed at increasing the mass strength and were not specifically aimed at strengthening the fill where it may subsequently be exposed for instance on the side or underneath as it required for underhand cut and fill methods of mining. In the Republic of Armenia, a method of fill strengthening known as electro-activation has been adopted. The deposit it an epithermal gold deposit which to-date has been mined using underhand cut and fill with timber support. The backfill comprises cement and pumice placed in 2.5 m lifts. Central to the method of electro-activation is the placement of the electrodes in the stope in which the polarity and the electrical potential are changing during filling. The process promotes the binding of the fill layers, the bond to the side walls and to the adjacent fill. There is a significant increase in the compressive and tensile strength. The process has been used with beneficial effects on reinforced concrete and could be used in any mine utilising hardening fills.

Mining is a high risk industry where miners seek to secure certainty in all of their dealings. The introduction of native title to the Australian legal system with the High CourtÆs 1992 Mabo decision and subsequent Native Title Act 1993 has added to the risks associated with implementation and the ongoing operation of exploration and mining projects. The High CourtÆs Ward case in August 2002 confirmed Crown ownership of minerals and petroleum. But the Court also found that a mining lease that allowed an exclusive possession for mining purposes did not extinguish all native title rights and interests. Although the Court was specifically considering WA mining tenements, the WA mining lease is very similar to the mining leases and licences that exist across Australia, meaning that these tenements are unlikely to fully extinguish native title. The Ward case means that native title remains squarely on the table now and into the future for those involved in developing exploration and mining projects. However, certainty and workability is capable of being secured and this paper discusses some means by which this may be achieved. The paper starts by considering two of the many 1998 amendments to the æfuture actsÆ regime under the Native Title Act, Indigenous Land Use Agreements (ILUAs) and the application of ægood faithÆ negotiation to all negotiating parties. It then looks at native title agreements, other issues affecting negotiations and tips for negotiation technique.

The conventional method of transporting mine tailings from a process plant to a tailings storage facility (TSF) is in the form of a low to medium density1 slurry, which can be pumped using centrifugal pumps. Over the past several decades, therefore, mine operators have generally adopted this default approach. There are, however, some convincing arguments why consideration should be given to thickening the tailings slurry to a higher density paste consistency. In particular, the minimisation of environmental impacts, the reduction in water consumption and the cost savings relating to TSF closure make paste an attractive option for the life of mine tailings disposal. There are several environmental impacts that are associated with a conventional slurry TSF, such as land sterilisation, aesthetics, dust, seepage and acid mine drainage. Some of these impacts, such as dusting, may be difficult to mitigate while the TSF is in operation. Others can be influenced by adjustments made to the tailings slurry density at the plant. Unplanned fluctuations in slurry density and/or viscosity can have a significant influence on TSF performance and can exacerbate the environmental impacts relating to the facility. Relatively minor changes in the solids content of the slurry can affect tailings beaching behaviour, degree of segregation, position of the phreatic surface, amount of freeboard, consolidation behaviour, placed (settled) density (and hence TSF capacity) and in situ strength of the tailings. Paste is a non segregating slurry and many of these effects can be minimised at the TSF when the tailings slurry is thickened to a paste. These improvements are manifested by reduced seepage, flexibility in selecting an appropriate final landform, ability to rehabilitate progressively and reductions in plant water usage. It is possible to minimise environmental impacts of a TSF through the use of tailings paste. Ideally the paste production plant should be part of the initial design of the process plant. However, significant benefits can be gained by adding a paste production plant at some time later in the operational life of the mine to reduce environmental impacts and facilitate an environmentally acceptable TSF closure.

"A personal account of my journey from a student from suburban Melbourne in the 1970s through 40 odd years in and around the mining industry including the important events that have moulded my thinking and, as result, have formed the guiding principles of the mining contracting business and related entities that make up the Byrnecut Group. On reflection the game of chance has played a big part in the journey, from the selection of initial study based on my parents financial capability and the one and only offer of early employment by Western Mining Corporation where the formative phase of my career took place in what was the vibrant can do environment that existed in Kambalda in the 1970s and early 1980s. Subsequently the unplanned meeting with Frank Lubbock drawing me back to Kalgoorlie from Fiji in 1987 and the resultant formation of a private mining contracting business, the excitement of the mid 1980s Kalgoorlie mining environment followed by the turmoil of the 1987 stock market crash where business survival was the game, resulting in a relationship with the German based Thyssen Group.Thereafter the development of a large privately owned international multifaceted mining services group and the principles behind that growth. These include: development of strategic personnel and retention of those personnel cashflow management and debt within a private company scenario recognising opportunity for synergetic growth but insisting on market forces driving those business elements, as opposed to internal divisions group-wide sustainable business systems, particularly in relation to leading safety and training processes innovation and renewal to provide the elusive advantage in a competitive market the role of entrepreneurial small businesses in development of technology.The above principles combine to make a margin in a cut throat contracting environment, competing on the world stage against other contractors and owner mining options.CITATION:Coughlan, S, 2014. The Archean Gossan Hill Group at Golden Grove, Western Australia, hosts two potentially economic volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits. The volcanic-sedimentary succession hosting this mineralisation is composed of a facies association which includes the products of rhyodacitic to,andesitic effusive volcanism, mass-flow sedimentation and concentrated hydrothermal fluid discharge, in a deep subaqueous setting. The Tertiary Kuroko deposits of Japan are widely compared to Archean volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits and a comparison of the facies associations hosting this style of mineralisation, in these two successions separated widely in time, allows a refinement of facies models suitable for exploration in ancient successions. The required deep subaqueous environment for the formation of volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits places constraints on the physical processes that can operate during accumulation of the host stratigraphy. Limitations on the operation of physical processes is reflected by the resultant facies association which can be used to characterize suitable volcanic-sedimentary successions in which volcanogenic massive sulphide mineralisation may be present. The facies association includes: (1) proximal effusive volcanic products - lavas and associated autoclastic breccias (2) distal volcanic products - mass-flow resedimented pyroclastic debris (3) background sedimentation - reworked volcanogenic and terrigenous mass-flow sediments and (4) chemical sediments - exhalites including cherts, sulphides and oxides, with perhaps various carbonates and sulphates. Primary pyroclastic deposits are not expected to be present, other than distal water-lain air-fall deposits, derived from shallow to emergent basin margin explosive volcanic centres, which also provide a source for the resedimented pyroclastic debris.

Over the last thirty years production of heavy minerals from Australian deposits has dominated the world market. The main incentive has been to suoply the raw material for titanium dioxide based pigments. These ~ninerals include ilmenite, rutile, leticoxene and more recently, synthetic rutile. Inevitably the viabilit/ of developing placer type deposits has seen influenced by other heavy minerals present, such as zircon and monazite, but these have been of secondary importance. For most of the sixties and seventies, Australia supplied the 'najority of free world rutile and zircon, and a large proportion of the ilmenite. With the run-down of rutile- rich reserves in eastern Australia, the emphasis has s:iifted in several countries, including Australia, to fill }the gap with i l Wen i to and its derivatives, leucoxene, synthetic rutile and titanium rich slag. over the next 15 - 20 years, as high grade beach placers in Western Australia are mined out, less traditional sources for mineral sands products will be opened up. Low grade placers (particularly those dominated by ilmenite) will be reassessed in Australia, U.S.A., Africa and Asia, and exploration will shift from beach and dune environment, to heavy mineral concentrations in alluvials, lake deposits and continental shelf deposits. At the same time, production of anatase and bastnaesite will be expanded, as required, from the huge resources contained in carbonatites in 3razil, U.S.A. and China.

This paper presents the water management plan of the Mae Moh Project in the North of Thailand, which includes a large lignite opencast mine and thermal power plants. Lignite production will increase from the present 5.5 million tons per annum to approximately 20 million tons per annum by 1995 when the pit area will be about 20 sq.km. and the depth at over 300 meters. Seven power plants are proposed of which two are under construction. The total capacity to be installed is 2,925 MW. The principles considered for water management are firstly flood protection, including drainage of the mining pit and diversion of the Mae Moh stream away from proposed future mining areas; and secondly, a plan to meet the water requirement of the thermal power plants, while maintaining downstream supplies for irrigation and other purposes. The limited annual run-off of Mae Moh and Mae Chang watershed basins are inadequate for the proposed power plants. A study has been prepared to compare two approaches, namely conveying water from remote watersheds to meet the water requirement of the power plants up to total installed capacity; or by limiting future total generation, at the existing site, to only 2025 MV.

Present value maximisation studies are a useful aid in enhancing the economic performance of open pit mining operations. Maximising present value helps to reduce the risk of financial failure. Maximisation of present value also means that the capital invested is being used most efficiently. A characteristic step in determining the present value of an open pit mining operation is to set out the sequence in which increments of material (ore of various grades and waste rock) are mined. Traditionally, present value maximisation has been performed by selecting a cut-off grade for each increment so as to maximise the present value of the total operation, by an iterative process using computers. Kenneth F Lane has developed a method and applied it to many mining operations. An alternative method for determining the maximum present value of an open pit mining operation is given. In this method the maximum present value is determined by working backwards from the end of the operation life, progressively asking the question of each increment `what cut-off grade maximises the the present value at the start of mining of that increment?' The method allows calculations to be performed by a `spreadsheet' package. Present value determinations are characteristically performed under constant conditions (eg prices, costs) throughout the operation life. Unfortunately real life circumstances are rarely constant, with the costs of mining inputs rising at variable rates. The prices received for mineral products have been shown to broadly trend downwards with time in real terms. Treatment of such changes in the determination of the maximum present value of an operation is discussed.

Timestudy analysis of mining operations at North Broken Hill Limited has been carried out by dissecting operations into small elemental components, and accurately timing these elements. Over a wide range of observations, this has enabled standard time values to be calculated for all underground work.The application of the standard values is in calculating performances as a measure of work output and Performance Controls are kept on approximately two-thirds of underground employees. Through the Controls it has been possible to stimulate supervisory action to improve low performance, and to reduce delays and lost time.The values are used to calculate contract" prices, and anomalies in previous prices have been adjusted on work values and not on arbitrary standards. In out-of-the-ordinary circumstances, the request for a timestudy investigation has been made by both operatives and foremen, and the contract set following the timestudy analysis has been to the satisfaction of both parties.The range of values enables contracts to be applied to work which was previously performed on a day basis, resulting in improved performance.A natural corollary of timestudy is the analysis of methods, and in some cases method improvements have been introduced.It is anticipated that further investigations will be made on methods.INTRODUCTIONIn 1953, a Timestudy analysis of mining operations at North Broken Hill Limited was commenced under the guidance of management consultants. Its aim was, to determine standard time values for specific operations, which would provide management with a measure of productivity beyond the existing measures of tons or feet of advance, and also to determine whether increased output was available under existing operating conditions.

At the Faculty of Mining and Petroleum Engineering, the Department of Raw Materials Technology, a mathematical model has been developed to predict the porosity distribution in an uniform jig bed. If the porosity distribution in an uniform jig bed is known, it is possible to correlate this to the settling velocity of particles with a density different from the density of the bed grains and thus model the stratification in a jig. For measuring the porosity distribution in the jig bed a method has been developed based on light absorption techniques.

With the post-war expansion of mmmg activities on its Western group of mines, the management of Lake View and Star Limited has commenced a project for the improvement of underground ventilation.The major part of this project is to provide adequate return airways for the ventilation of the deep levels. To this end, the Ivanhoe South Extended shaft is being enlarged, and ultimately an exhaust fan with a capacity of 180,000 cu. ft. of air per minute will be installed at the shaft collar.Prior to 1932, the shaft was used exclusively for baling water from the 800 and 2,000 ft. levels. These two levels are the only ones connected to workings from the Horseshoe lease. After the installation of pumping plant at the Horseshoe Main Shaft, baling was discontinued, and the water was graVitated from dams to the pumps on the 1,000 and 2,000 ft. levels.Water makes into the shaft, through a series of fault planes, between the 600 and 1,500 ft. horizons. The total flow is 16 gal. per minute, of which approximately 7 gal. per minute graVitates to the 800 ft. level. As a big proportion of the water dropped uncontrolled through the shaft, a downcast current of air approximating 20,000 c.f.m. was induced. This air ventilated a limited area of workings in the Horseshoe lease, between the 2,000 and 2,360 ft. levels.In 1938, it was decided to reverse the direction of the airflow in the shaft. The GDR has extensive lignite deposits at its disposal, which formed the basis for the development of an independent energy source after 1945 and which will retain their significance well beyond the year 2000 (see fig. 1). In 1946 lignite output was about 110 x 106 t. In 1985 312x 106 t was produced and in 1988 the planned output will be ca. 315 x 106 t. Thus, the domestic produc- tion of lignite covers ca. 75% of the GDR's primary energy requirements. More than 80% of the electrical energy is gener- ated by the use of lignite and about 12% by nuclear energy. In addition to this, about 18 x 106 t/a mineral oil and about 6 x 109, m3/a natural gas are imported, predominantly from the Soviet Union. The lignite deposits of the GDR are of Tertiary origin and are recovered exclusively by opencast mining. There are two large regions (fig. 2): - in the region east of the river Elbe (Cottbus/Senftenberg- "Niederlausitz") and - in the region west of the river Elbe (Halle/Leip- zig/Magdeburg). These deposits differ in geological age and conditions of depo- sition, consequently there are differences in their chemical and physical composition and, thus, in their uses. The younger Mio- cene coals of the main region in the East of the river Elbe belong to the epirogenetic type and have a low content of ash and sul- phur. Among other things, they are suitable for the production of brown coal high-temperature coke (Lauchhammer and Schwarze Pumpe). The older Oligocene coals of the Halle/Leip- zig region are bitumenous in certain areas. Therefore, they form the basis for production in low-temperature carbonizing and chemical plants. In the Halle-Magdeburg region, where the lig- nite is in contact with the underlying Zechstein subdivision, so- called "salt coals" are found.

Interest in mining narrow, vein-type ones has increased world-wide during the last few years despite the fact that prices of metals have not risen in proportion as production costs of mining, such as labour and energy.In many mines, where narrow ones are mined, the mining technique and equipment used have been poorly mechanized. The mining methods have been cut-and-fill or shrinkage stoping. Pneumatic jack-legs have been used for drilling and slushers have been used for loading.The methods that have been used can be called the "first-generation" methods.Work has been very hard for miners. It has been dangerous and exhausting.Production volumes of mines, and a s a result of that, also profits have been low.

Nelsen, Porter and Wilson (1996) provided some preliminary concepts for the design of the Melbourne City Link tunnels. At that time, the City Link project was in the early design phase whereas now it is nearing completion. This paper provides details of the actual design adopted for the various sections of the tunnels as well as some commentary on the design process. The tunnels form a critical element of the project and the design of both driven and cut and cover tunnel sections is a significant factor contributing to successful project execution. Geology, hydrogeology, site constraints, traffic management and program were important design inputs. Design for the cut and cover sections in particular varied significantly in response to these differing inputs.

Anyone who has driven backwards using only their rear view mirrors knows how difficult it is to avoid spinning the steering wheel the wrong way. So why run your mine that way? Traditionally Reconciliation has focused on the past performance of the mine. In this paper we make a case for Prognostication û the act of forecasting or predicting something in the future from present indications or signs. Reconciliation is a common activity carried out at most mines around the world. Countless geologists and engineers spend hours poised in front of spreadsheets diligently comparing how their resource/reserve model, grade control, and survey pick ups compare to what was actually produced. The result is usually a group of factors, which are applied to future estimates in an attempt to better predict how the operation may perform. Unfortunately, if the road ahead isnÆt the same as what you have just been down, youÆll be æoff-roadingÆ in no time! An alternative is to constantly collect and analyse key measurements that are used to calibrate critical estimates in an iterative process. When variations occur, they are analysed and corrective action is taken to ensure the estimates and measurements realign. In this way the estimates become forecasts and can then form the basis for decision making to ensure that what does happen in the future will match the plan or schedule. By automating this process, some mines have been able to be proactive on a daily basis in order to improve the overall performance of the operation. This paper outlines the key estimates and measurements used for reconciliation, details the characteristics of an automated web based information management system to facilitate the process and provides some insights about how mining operations might move beyond reconciliation.

The extraction of pillars.FACTORS IN ROOF CONTROLThe main objects of roof control are: The support of the roof in working places, the relief of roof pressure from the workings during pillar extraction, and in some instances the prevention of subsidence of the surface.The support of the roof during development operations and first working, and the subsequent maintenance of these is influenced by:-1. The depth of the seam below the surface.2. The thickness of the seam.3. The dip of the seam.4. The condition of the roof and floor.5. The method of extraction-mechanical or by hand.6. The method of. working-Iongwall or bord and pillar.7. The availability of material.As a general rule, the pressure exerted by the superincumbent strata may be taken as one pound per square inch for each foot of cover, and the crushing strength of coal as 1,500 to 2,000 lb. per square inch; this, of course, varies, but from these figures it may be assumed that seams below 2,000ft. in depth are liable to crush. If any part of the seam is removed, added weight is thrown onto the remaining coal. It is therefpre essential that for effective working this extra weight must be removed or supported as soon as possible.The outstanding principle in the support of mining excavations is to ensure that the supports are set as soon as possible after the natural support has been removed.Where a system of bord and pillar is applied, the early setting of supports reduces the extent to which the roof bends, thereby reducing the liability to ·tension fractures at the centre of the road.

Generally, the acceptable parameter for predicting the intensity of ground vibration due to a blast is the amount of explo ive u ed and the distance from the explo ion. A eries of closely controlled tests were carried out and it was observed that the degree of confinement or burden of an explosive charge play an important role in the variation of the transmitted magnitude of the shock wave through the ground.The intensity of the shock wave increases with burial depth or with greater confinement of an explosion until a critical depth is reached.Beyond this critical depth, the magnitude of ground vibration remain constant. This is an important finding, which explains the anomalies between the expected level and the monitored ground vibration in a particular situation.
