The efficiency with which it is expected that a particular coal may be burnt in a power station boiler significantly affects the value of the coal. Consequently many laboratory tests have been developed to provide data on the combustibility of coal. Computer modelling of coal combustion has also provided insight into limits on coal burn- out. Such modelling suggests that burnout of bituminous coal in a power station boiler will be strongly influenced by physical limits on the diffusion of oxygen to the individual coal particles. Coal chemical reactivity appears to be relatively less important. As a consequence of the diffusional limits, significant improvement in burnout is achieved either by producing less large p.f. particles or by providing sufficient furnace residence time to burn the large particles. Field data from a variety of power stations supports these cn.clusions. Burnout was also found to correlate well with volatile content for a number of coals from widely different sources. This is expected as the high vola- tile coals produce less residual char to be burned by the relatively slow heterogeneous Combustion.

Polyacrylamide flocculating agent has been used in the Leaching Division of the Risdon Works of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd since October, 1960. Since the introduction, the.: number of thickeners in use in the continu-ous thickening stage has been reduced from eight to three; there has been an increase of 25% in throughput and a reduc-tion of solids in.:thickener overflow from 3-4 gòpòl . solids to 0.5 g.p.l. solids. Reagent addition has been at the rate of 0.25. lb SEPARAN, NP10 per ton solids.Additionally there has been a gain of 3% in current efficiency as the direct result of the addition of SEPARAN NP10 to purified cadmium sulphate solution prior to electrolysis for cadmium metal. A smoother deposit has resulted and it has been possible to increase deposition time between strip-pings from 47 to 71 hours. However, there has been a slight increase the lead content of the cadmium-metal produced.

Plant trials are at the best of times difficult to perform; given variations in the ore, operating practice and economic constraints placed on a plant. Testing grinding media at industrial scale adds a further level of complexity that needs to be accounted for.Laboratory test programs consistently demonstrate that altering the grinding chemistry through the application of inert grinding media has the potential to provide significant metallurgical benefit. However, prog- ressing from laboratory testing to industrial trial is often an agonisingly slow process that can lead to inconclusive results which raise more questions than give answers. There are many factors that need to be considered when conducting plant trials aimed at demonstrating the impact of inert grinding media on metallurgical performance. The decisions (or lack thereof) made during the planning stage can heavily impact on whether a statistically meaningful result is achieved. Various factors such as how the trial is conducted (dumping or purging the charge); the circuit configuration; collection of the right data; and even the human factor will affect the outcome. The authors will use examples to demonstrate the importance of proper planning and controlled operation on grinding media plant trials.

A wide variety of process streams are sampled for grade control in the mining industry. However, in many instances the overall precision of the resultant analyses is inadequate for the intended purpose, ie grade control and optimisation of resource utilisation. Consequently, special attention needs to be given to the sampling, sample preparation and analysis procedures in place to ensure that meaningful grade control decisions can be made based on the analyses generated. For example, it is virtually impossible to control a process to within, say, ¦0.2 per cent if the overall precision of the analyses is no better than 0.5 per cent. Hence, precision targets appropriate for the task need to be established and the overall precision achieved in practice monitored and controlled on an ongoing basis.

Most internationally traded iron ore resources are derived from multiple mine sites, transported to a port facility where they are blended and possibly further processed prior to shipping. Provided the proportion of contributions varies over a number of shipments an estimate can be made of the bias introduced by mine site sampling, analysis and materials handling systems, using zero-intercept multiple linear regression. Further regression applied to the residuals allows the error variances for the source mines to be estimated. Various sampling strategies are used by the industry. All have shipment-loading sampling on which payment or at least provisional payment is based. In most cases sampling prestockpile is used at mine sites to verify estimated production grades. Train grades are estimated from mine stockpile grades and in some cases train grades are verified by port input sampling. The methodology used is presented in this paper. Simulated data have been used and do not reflect the actual performance of any operator. The merits of the various systems and the implementation and potential limitations of our method are discussed more fully in a companion paper (Ziegelaar and Everett, 2010).

E Deposit is located at BHP BillitonÆs Area C iron ore operations in the central region of the Hamersley Province, Western Australia. It is hosted by the Marra Mamba Iron Formation, the lowermost unit of the Archaean to Lower Proterozoic Hamersley Group. Mineralisation at E Deposit East is contained within the Mount Newman Member of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation and extends into the lower West Angela Member of the overlying Wittenoom Formation. Use of a combination of geological and geophysical techniques has enabled the geological setting of the deposit to be qualified. Interpretation of detailed mine face mapping, downhole geophysics, geochemistry, geological logging and photography has identified D2- related thrust faulting, with substantial south-over-north displacement. Similarly, in-pit mapping at the nearby C Deposit has revealed intense localised D2 deformation, including overturning and thrust faulting. The interpreted structure illustrates that iron ore deposits in the central Hamersley Province can be intensely deformed and require detailed geological investigation utilising technical data from mapping and drilling to enable the creation of robust grade-models for the mining operation.

Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd (KCGM) is a management company, formed in 1989, to manage the assets and operate the Kalgoorlie joint venture for the owner companies Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie Limited (GMK) and Homestake Gold of Australia Limited (HGAL). Mining is still in progress on the 'Golden Mile' and surrounding areas more than 100 years after Paddy Hannan's discovery adjacent to the active Mt Charlotte mine. From 1893 until 30 June 1995 the Kalgoorlie Goldfields has produced approximately 45 million ounces (-1400 tonnes) of gold from mining and treating about 179 million tonnes of ore. This production equates to about 20 per cent of the total Australian gold production and about one per cent of the world's

Acidic drainage has long been recognised as the largest environmental liability facing the mining industry, and to a lesser extent, the public, through abandoned mines. The Canadian Mine Environment Neutral Drainage (MEND) initiative was the first international multi-stakeholder program to develop scientifically based technologies to reduce the effect of acidic drainage. The original MEND Program extended over a nine-year time frame ending in 1997, with technology transfer activities continuing to the end of year 2000 under the MEND 2000 program. Both programs have contributed enormously to the understanding of acidic drainage and how to prevent it. MEND3, launched in 2001, intends to further this effort with a strong, research-driven program. The successes of the MEND initiative have come through the collaborative efforts of the partners, the sharing of experiences, the thorough evaluation of technologies and their incremental improvements. As a result, the knowledge base on acidic drainage has grown considerably. An international model of alliance between the various worldwide initiative involved in acidic drainage is being formalised at this conference. This global alliance will enhance technology transfer capabilities and will lead to improved environmental performance for the industry. It is through collaboration that we have achieved the most progress in environmental performance, and this formal relationship will further expand these benefits.

Geosynclines have been well studied for many years, but very little has been written about the concepts of sedimentary basins in spite of the vast amount of data available. They have been regarded, perhaps, as well- understood intuitively, and therefore not worthy of study. Many of the fundamental concepts of geology were developed during the 19th Century with the construction of coal mines, canals and railways. It was a happy chance that led railway engineers in the early days to think that trains could not climb any but the smallest gradient, so, in Britain at -least, numerous railway cuttings and tunnels were made. These exposed to view and study, in a better form than Nature usually provides, a great deal of interesting geology. Because of the lack of literature about the concepts of sedimentary basins, it is not possible to be sure what the early geologists thought. It seems that sedimentary basins were regarded as recording a history of subsidence during the early stages, when a transgressive sequence accumulated; and a history of uplift during the later stages, when a regressive sequence accumulated. It seemed axiomatic that the age of folding and faulting was younger than the rocks folded or Faulted.

THE past few years have seen a considerable expansion of the roasting of blende in Australia. The bulk of this blende is Zinciferous concentrate from Broken Hill and now forms a very considerable source of sulphur for the acid manufacture. It will bereadily conceded that Australian sentiment is in favour of utilising all known potential wealth, especially that won from below ground, as this once disposed of is gone forever. If Australia does not make sulphuric acid from her sulphide ores we may be sure that the purchaser of these ores will do so if in any way possible. It must not be assumed, then, that the difficulties met are mentioned with the idea of undue criticism, but rather to show that, although most of the intial troubles have been overcome, there are still a few to be encountered; and with the hope that comment brought forth will aid in the solution of the problems facing an industry at present little more than in its childhood as far as Australia is concerned.Blende roasting is done in mechanical furnaces of various makes, and mostly without the aid of other fuel than the sulphur in the ore. It will be our aim to touch on the various difficulties in the order in which they occur in the train from furnace to acid plant.

It is acknowledged that the analysis of iron ores using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) for major and minor elements is best carried out on fusion discs. This method of sample preparation eliminates mineral and particle size effects which can lead to biased results when using pressed powder pellets. However, the fusion disc method is costly as it requires a high capital investment in platinumware, requires experienced operators and uses expensive fluxes. Also, the dilution effect complicates the analysis of trace elements. For many applications, such as exploration and mining control, the method of XRF analysis of iron ores by pressed powder pellet probably provides data of adequate quality. Kumba Iron Ore, an iron ore producer in South Africa, recognises this and carries out most analyses of iron ore by pressed powder pellet and uses the automated fusion method mainly for certification of in-house calibration standards and quality control (QC) samples that are used for validation of pressed powder pellet method purposes. Automated fusion is also used for analysing the composite export shipping samples. All the other exploration, production, despatching and plant operation samples are done by the pressed powder pellet method. Automation of sample preparation procedures should improve the quality of data for pressed powder pellets. To compare the precision of the three methods of sample preparation and XRF analysis, 20 aliquots of a QC standard were prepared and analysed by each procedure/preparation method. The results and statistical data on the most important elements, Fe, K2O and P, are as shown later in Table 2.Clearly the precision is best for the auto prepared fusion discs, as expected, and worst for the manually prepared pressed powder pellets. However, the data generated from the auto prepared pressed powder pellets compare remarkably well against those from the auto prepared fusion discs.

Mine planning studies of iron ore deposits are often based on resource models generated by ordinary kriging. Ordinary kriging aims for local accuracy to minimise the variance of expected estimation error but this is at the expense of reproducing variability of the original sampling data. Hence mine planning studies using kriged models are likely to underestimate product variability, and the required blending and stockpiling capacity to reduce variability to an acceptable level. Instead, conditional simulation models of the main chemical variables in iron ore are able to reproduce likely variability to be encountered during mining and processing. This approach is demonstrated in a case study of the Weld Range bedded iron ore deposit in Western Australia, with a comparison of ordinary kriging and conditional simulation models. Conditional simulation models suggest that, compared with the single ordinary kriging estimation, there is likely to be far greater block variability for iron and impurities, a greater requirement for stockpiling and blending capacity, highest variability in initial years of mining and less variability in later years of mining for deeper ore. The conditional simulations provide a more realistic range of mining outcomes for production of high-grade ore, which may be seven per cent less than in the kriged model, as well as for lower expected project net present value (NPV). In year one, the kriged model is conservative for NPV; however, in later years two to five the kriged model has higher NPV than most conditional simulations, suggesting expected NPV based on the kriged model may not be achieved. For improved decision-making in mine planning, a complete range of possible outcomes from conditional simulations of the deposit should be considered rather than relying on a single kriging estimation that may be an end member case in the range of possible mining outcomes.

The Luzon arc extends for about 900 km from Taiwan to the island of Mindoro (central Philippines); in this area late Tertiary to Recent volcanism is considered to be the result of eastward subduction along the Manila Trench. The arc is composed of five segments, all of which have individual characteristics with respect to tectonic setting and magma chemistry (Defant et al., 1989). From the north to the south these are (Fig. 1): (1) the eastern Coast Ranges of Taiwan and the islands Lan-Hsu and Lu-Tao (Taiwan Segment), (2) the islands off the north coast of Luzon (Babuyan Segment), (3) the Northern Luzon Segment, (4) the Bataan Segment, and (5) the Mindoro Segment. Defant et al. (1988) suggest that the Bataan and Mindoro segments of the arc, both of which are characterized by different isotopic compositions and levels of large ion lithophile element (LILE) enrichment in the lavas, are separated by a 'pull-apart' zone, the Macolod Corridor.We are currently studying the mineralogy and petrochemistry of Late-Miocene to Pliocene volcanism in the Northern Luzon Segment (NLS), which comprises the geographic area of the Cordillera Central. This area has so far received limited attention, inspite of its wealth of porphyry copper, skarn and epithermal gold deposits. In this contribution we report the first results of our study of igneous rocks from the Mankayan Mineral District (MMD) which is located in the centre of the arc segment under consideration.

The media in Australia is currently rife with articles and pronouncements on global warming as the most significant crisis of our time, which may æthreaten the future of civilisation as we know itÆ. This has been recently reinforced by release of Al GoreÆs film æAn Inconvenient TruthÆ, and one would be led to believe that the science of global warming is settled. And yet there is a strong body of literature disputing this apparent consensus which suggests that care should be exercised in introducing radical policies to solve a crisis which may not be real. Such policies would have a major impact on those in professions such as engineering (project approvals and design to minimise greenhouse gas emissions), accounting (carbon tax issues) and the law (corporate disputes on greenhouse gas issues are already in train in the USA). This paper addresses the hysteria apparent in the climate change debate by presenting factual evidence relating to climate change and the current phase of mild global warming. Some of the more extreme statements on future impacts are repudiated with published data, and alternatives to the purported role of fossil fuels in temperature change are offered. The potential impact of political decisions on professional activity is discussed, as are the implications of a possible future reversal of the scientific consensus, as has occurred in the past. The paper concludes with a call for the professions to exercise their Learned Society role to ensure that a rational and public debate is held on the broad issue of climate change.

In a previous paper in these Proceedings(l) it was shown from a study of the bore'logs and analyses then available, that the brown coal seams of the Latrobe Valley areas show progressive changes in composition with increase of stratigraphic depth, equivalent to a rise in rank: These changes appear as:(i) An increase in ultimate carbon and hydrogen, calculated on a dry, ash-free basis, and(ii) An increase in calorific value, calculated on the, same basis, each of the order of 1% per 100 ft. of depth, and(iii) A decrease in moisture content of the order of 0.5% to 1.0% per 100 ft. of depth. The decrease in moisture content was found to be less regular than the other changes. In some bores the moisture content remained more or less constant throughout a single seam, or fluctuated slightly, decreasing stepwise on passage to the seam below.It was noted that individual analyses within a bore showed irregular fluctuations, tending to mask the general trend in composition change. This was particularly so for the moisture content, which had been determined for 10 ft. lengths of core, whereas the other components were determined for 50 ft. lengths of core. Averaging of the moisture contents over 50 ft. lengths reduced the masking effects of these irregularities. The suggestion was made that these irregularities arose from variations in the relative proportions of pollen, resin, wood (lignite) and woody attritus composing the core. The results presented here show quite definitely that in the system investigated the intensity of dispersion is enhanced by switching the flow entry from bottom to sides of the packed trough. Since there is no reason to suppose that this would not be true generally then it is not surprising that the blast furnace dispersion data of Standish and Polthier lie above the data for packed columns with bottom fluid entry. In fact, on the basis of the present results, blast furnace dispersion results can never equal standard packed column behaviour but must always be above these. The result that the intensity of dispersion in the trough model is higher closer to the side ports than away from them is at variance with that of Standish and Polthier blast furnace results. Aside from the obvious structural differences between these two systems, it is thought that the presence of raceways and the tortuous path of the gas flow in the furnace may provide an answer. Clearly this is an important difference in the behaviour of the two systems and further investigations designed to clarify the position would have significant practical value. This would also give an indication of how the furnace D/ud values may be decreased along the whole height - assuming of course that this result gives the best overall performance of the furnace. However, there is to date no knowledge whatsoever about this aspect of blast furnace Technology.

While the haematite concentrates produced in Eastern Canada and the magnetite concentrates that Australia will soon be producing are different feed materials, the pellets they produce have similar physical and metallurgical properties. This paper will examine the similarities and differences in the evolution of pellet microstructure for pellets produced from magnetite and haematite. The molten slag phase generated at high temperatures has a lower melting point when in contact with magnetite compared with haematite due to the higher divalent iron content. The presence of some slag is beneficial for bonding but too much can inhibit oxidation of magnetite, although slag generation at lower temperatures reduces energy usage. In pellets produced from haematite, magnetite is generated artificially from the combustion of the carbon particles added to the pellet feed as a source of energy. Maintaining the optimum production level and mineralogy of such æsecondaryÆ magnetite, allowing for its subsequent reoxidation, is important for the quality of haematite pellets. In both magnetite and haematite pellets, balancing the slag formation and oxidation (re-oxidation for haematite pellets) of the magnetite (secondary magnetite for haematite pellets) is necessary.

A description of:1. Air-lock at No. 14 Upcast shaft.2. Pit-top gates at Dudley winding shaft.3. Safety rider employed in sinking No. 18 shaft.1. AIR-LOCK AT No. 14 SHAFT.Some time ago it became desirable to raise and lower the McBride tunnel men to save them walking the inclined tunnel, about a mile in length, with a dip of nearly 600 ft., and a maximum gradient of 1 in 4. The main Upcast shaft, No. 14, was, therefore, equipped for winding the men. As this shaft was the main ventilating shaft for the McBride tunnel mine, it was necessary to take the greatest precautions against leakage of air. The writer therefore devised the concrete structure shown in Plate 1.The structure, as shown, surrounds the shaft inside the poppet legs. As the men are wound on double-decked cages (twelve men to each deck) provision is made at both top and bottom for the two decks to be loaded and emptied simultaneously. The doorsover the sky shaft, shown in the drawing, have been cut out and the sky shaft has been close-timbered with a double layer of T. and G. flooring boards, with building paper between, nearly up to the thimble frame, a small hole only being left for the winding rope topass through. The space between the ramps is glazed with plate glass to allow the winding-engine driver a good view of the pit top.The men are wound from two levels, 302 ft. and 611 ft.2. In order to realise seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) mining, the environmental baseline survey around targeted SMS mining areas and the creation of an environmental assessment technique suitable for quantifying the impacts of ocean floor mining are necessary. The targeted areas generally host large chemosynthetic communities in association with active hydrothermal venting. The ecosystem structure around the chemosynthetic communities has not been clarified yet in macro-scale or quantitatively. The systematic approach and plan for the baseline survey and the environmental assessmentÆs basic studies are introduced. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. IN carrying out experiments to determine the amount of metal taken away by fume or fine dust the apparatus used requires to be strong and compact, as it is generaIIy necessary to work on a staging fixed at considerable distance above the ground and against a smoke stack or flue. It is essential that the test be carried out at a part of the stack welI away from any bends, to prevent eddies. The method described below has been used for estimating the dust losses from Dwight & Lloyd sintering machines, antimony drossing furnaces, pot sintering trials, etc., and has been founc! satisfaetory. It is welI to bear in mind that the longer the period over which dust coIIection is extended, the more valuable the result is likely to be. The rateof aspiration of the gases through the apparatus is kept as regular as possible by changing the filter thimbles frequently, and the rate of flow should correspond closely with the rate of flow of the gases up the stack.The apparatus required for carrying out a test is as folIows :-{a) Thermometers : two are required, one for taking the temperature of the gas in the stack and one for giving the temperature of the gas in the aspirating drum. If the temperature in the stack is over 400° C., it is advisable to use a pyrometer such as the "Bristol" the couple being standardized before use at about the temperature of the stack.(b) Pilot Tube: The foIIowing sketch (Fig. 1) iIIustrates the principle of the pitot tube.
