Exceptionally weak ground, usually associated with faulting, unanticipated groundwater pressures or flows and exceptionally high stress concentrations are some of the hazards which confront the underground excavation engineer. One or more of these hazards can seriously delay or even halt a tunnel or mining project, and methods for predicting these hazards are urgently required, particularly for projects involving high speed drill and blast or tunnelling machine excavations.This paper explores the current availability and the potential for the development of tools and techniques for the prediction of these hazards. It is concluded that systematic and automated geological data collection and interpretation represent the most promising avenue for development. It is suggested that there is room for the use of expert systems in which the computer is used to assemble and organize practical underground excavation experience into an interactive decision making system.

The face of project evaluation is changing continuously, making it ever more critical to get a clear understanding upfront of the objectives, decision-making processes and criteria of the project proponents. Requirements are usually significantly different for emerging æjuniorsÆ compared with long established major mining houses and companies in developing countries compared with western companies. Requirements are also different for different types of evaluations, such as due diligence studies compared with feasibility studies of æownedÆ projects and there are often key misunderstandings around the use of the term æbankableÆ. Further, it has become increasingly important with increasingly remote and lower quality resources to understand risk relativities such as infrastructure compared with the core processing facilities. This has also driven the need for more trade-off studies to determine the best balance between critical issues, such as optimisation of the interface between mine and processing plant, capital versus operating cost and automation versus labour. In every project evaluation, it is also critical to consider emerging trends and changing requirements and standards such as sustainability and community interface. Finally, the inescapable drive to reduce time to market has driven changes such as increased use of more standardised designs and innovative approaches to the transition from project development to execution. This paper begins with a brief review of the different objectives and risks of each project development stage to establish a framework for subsequent discussion of the different requirements of different types of companies in different locations, different types of evaluations and different types of projects and project components. This is followed by a review of changing requirements and standards and some innovative developments in sustainability and community interface are presented. Finally, the paper outlines a number of developments in the area of operational readiness planning that focus on minimising the time to achieve maximum return on investment.

The Myally Beds, Surprise Creek Beds and Mount Isa Group form the upper part of the Proterozoic Western succession of rocks in northwest Queensland. The latter two units are partly equivalent, and are important for their base metal content at Mount Isa and elsewhere. The arenaceous Myally Beds lie unconform- ably or disconformably below the Mount Isa Group and Surprise Creek Beds; they contain four mappable units which were deposited on a broad, shallow shelf washed by east-trending currents. Emergence of the Myally shelf initiated a series of parallel, possibly intra- cratonic, troughs to the east and west. In the east, the Surprise Creek Beds were deposited between the emergent shelf and base- ment rocks, and consist of a shelf and trough facies divisible into 7 and 10 units, respectively. Trough sediments are continuous north-south, and show turbidite character- istics; algal dolomite characterizes the shelf facies. To the west in the Mount Isa trough, an orthoquartzite facies, the Warrina Park Quartzite, defines the base of the Mount Isa Group. Hinge zones between the shelf and trough environments are marked by east-west facies changes, and provide a focus for later major north-south faulting. However, some penecon- temporaneous faulting near Mount Isa is best explained as complex post-depositional faulting of a disconformable sequence. Subsidence and deposition in the Mount Isa trough continued for a longer period than in the Surprise Creek trough, allowing accumulation of lead and zinc deposits in the upper half of the sequence. The Surprise Creek Beds appear equivalent to the lower half of the Mount Isa Group, and are probably not prospective for lead and zinc. Turquoise and possible other secondary copper minerals are widespread in the Warrina Park Quartzite and equivalents in the Surprise Creek Beds, and further investigation of these formations seems warranted.

Plant tests of magnetic conditioning have shown increased flotation recovery of paramagnetic sulfide minerals (chalcopyrite, sphalerite and pentlandite) in the -38 ¦m size fraction within rougher and cleaner flotation circuits. A statistical plant test was undertaken in the Mount Isa zinc flotation circuit where magnetic conditioning was tested simultaneously in both the rougher circuit and the cleaner retreat circuit (cleaner scavenger). This test resulted in a normalised increase of 1.60 per cent in the rougher circuit zinc recovery and simultaneously a normalised increase of 4.60 per cent in the cleaner retreat circuit zinc recovery - to a very high level of statistical confidence. Interestingly, in a novel approach, it was possible to verify the plant test results in two ways. Firstly, detailed MLA analysis of the tails confirmed the statistical plant test results and showed that the greatest effect of magnetic conditioning was on the sphalerite in the C3 - C6 size fraction, where there was a reduction of around 15 per cent in zinc in tails. Moreover, there was a reduction of around 15 per cent in liberated sphalerite across all -38 ¦m size fractions, but only a seven per cent reduction in non-liberated sphalerite in the tails. Secondly, plant modelling showed that increasing the rougher zinc recovery would cause an increase in zinc feed grade to the cleaner retreat circuit. The increase in the zinc feed grade to the cleaner retreat circuit with magnetic conditioning was demonstrated to a very high level of statistical confidence.CITATION:Gurnett, I, Voigt, P, Lumsden, B and Lines, P, 2012. The association of graphite with a fine grained pyrite in the Mount Isa lead-zinc ore was investigated from mineralogical and metallurgical standpoints. The pyrite has been partially or completely replaced by galena and to a less extent by sphalerite, pyrrhotiteand chalcopyrite with the retention of graphite films or inclusions. During lead flotation the graphite imparts a spontaneous flotability to all associated minerals, resulting in a low grade fraction, which we call the carbonaceous fraction, floating with and diluting the lead concentrate. In times of low metal prices this fraction seriously reduces the economic value of the lead concentrate. A flotation procedure was developed to upgrade the carbonaceous fraction separately, producing an economic concentrate and a tailing.INTRODUCTIONThe lead concentrate produced from Mount Isa ores can vary from 20 to 50 per cent lead, depending on the locality in the mine from which the ore is obtained. Variations of this order are independent of ore grade and lead recovery. The large variation is related to the presence in the ore of a variable fast floating low grade fraction known locally as the carbonaceous fraction because of its association with graphite. During conventional lead flotation with sodium ethyl xanthate the carbonaceous fraction floats rapidly and unselectively with normal Mount Isa galena.The paper discusses mainly the examination and treatment of an average carbonaceous fraction, defined here as the fast floating material in the mill feed of late 1956. The Pajingo ore bodies consist mainly of auriferous quartz veins hosted by a suite of hydrothermally altered andesitic pyroclastics, volcanics and epiclastic sediments. Scott lode, the main economic deposit in the area, lies in a zone of major structural disruption and contortion. High grade gold and silver mineralisation is selectively mined by open pit methods. Standard grade control techniques and extraction methods were adapted to minimise mining dilution and to maximise metal recovery. Basic blending of grade ranges at the crusher has produced an average 10 gram/tonne gold head grade. The estimation of ore reserves calculated by both standard polygonal and geostatistical methods proved acceptable. Mineable reserves when compared to in pit reserves defined by blast hole drilling, indicate a decrease in tonnes and an increase in the grade resulting in an acceptable comparison of the total ounces of contained gold. The ore reconciliation of mined against milled ounces indicates that both ore reserve and grade control models underestimate the metal content in the orebody. Sampling techniques are being examined in an attempt to reduce this discrepancy.

This paper outlines a range of strategies for steady state optimisation of most types of concentrators. Optimisation is considered in terms of comminution performance, energy efficiency, concentrator strategy and overall mine/concentrator operating philosophies. Application becomes more complex as the range of optimisation is expanded. However, the potential gains also increase. A step by step framework for data collection and analysis is provided. This process is facilitated by powerful simulation and mass balancing programs which are now in common use. Once a sound, steady state rationale for optimisation has been developed, it may be used to provide a fine foundation for process control system development.

A part of the results of dissection survey of Chiba No.1 blast furnace, Kawasaki Steel Corporat- ion, is presented. Distributions of coke size and of slag and metal holdup are shown in the region of the dropping zone. A similar relation to the irri- gated packed bed is obtained. The distribution of coke size, coke temperature and liquid holdup are measured in and around the raceway. The shape of raceway in the horizontal and vertical sections indicates that each raceway worked individually. Coal Mining in India had been confined in the past primarily to two or three coalfields. Unscientific mining has led to huge degradation of land including massive subsidence of strata and disturbances of water tables to a wide extent. This has caused problems not only in flooding of mines from surface water but also in further planning of the surface drainage for current mining activities. Now, therefore, surface hydrology and land-use potentialities of the area have been endangered inflicting severe damage to the overall environment and ecology of the area. The paper Discusses certain investigative aspects of the problems highlighted as above in one of the coalfields, and encompasses mainly the following areas : 1) Quantitative estimation of the damage already done to the natural surface drainage system. For this purpose damage to topography and drainage for the last fifty years have been made out through the aerial photographs and topographic map sheets 2) Analysis and comparison of different states of such photographs are carried through to indicate the extent of damage to the hydrological conditions inducing undesirable changes in its land-use pattern. Based on the analysis, concrete suggestions are made to restore the water drainage system which will be most suitable for future mining in the area containing high grade coal. The design and planning of the drainage system is based on the total system approach including the cost benefit analysis as well as hydrological considerations.

The EPA National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL) Mine Waste Technology Program (MWTP) and the EPA Region VIII Superfund office are jointly conducting a field-scale technology demonstration of a two-step in situ treatment of the acidic Anchor Hill Pit lake at the Gilt Edge Mine Superfund site near Deadwood, South Dakota, USA. The project goal is to develop cost and performance data for the in situ treatment for potential application in long-term water treatment/management activities at the Gilt Edge site, and for potential application at other similar sites. Lime neutralisation of the pit using a Neutra-Mill was accomplished in the spring of 2001, with a resultant lime utilisation efficiency of about 71 per cent, and a typical throughput of about 1 tonne per hour using coarse, pebble quicklime and 1.4 tonnes per hour using finer, ground lime. Redox-mediated biotransformation treatment of the pit has been ongoing since May 2001. As of January 2003, denitrification is complete in the near-surface waters and about 90 per cent complete in the deeper waters. Bacterial sulfate reduction is expected to begin in the near future. This paper describes project activities, results, and lessons-learned to-date as well as future monitoring plans.

An algorithm is described which leads directly to a unique set of coal washing parameters which, in two or more parallel streams, will give maximum yield of product at a given ash. This occurs when all parallel streams are washed to the same incremental ash. This strategy is shown to offer a considerable increase in yield compared to the simpler strategy of washing each stream to the same sumulative ash.

Geochemical investigations carried out in the Woodcutters area, Rum Jungle district, NT., consisted of a programme of C-horizon soil geochemical sampling followed by rotary-percussion and diamond drilling.Comparison of detailed geochemical sampling with the original broadly-spaced sampling showed that the structures along which the orebodies occur are reflected very closely by the detailed sampling.A series of vertical rotary-percussion drill holes put down adjacent to a gossan revealed a broad layered dispersion of lead and zinc in the deep lateritic weathering profile, while primary dispersion haloes are only very narrow. The layering appears to be related to the weathering profile.
