The process of refurbishment is not a precisely defined one. It is under- stood to mean an upgrading of a plant which is normally performed only once. The application of refurbishment in the field of materials hand- ling equipment poses particular problems because complex plants con- sist of individual components having quite different remaining service lives. For this reason, a systematic, proven procedure is proposed for the refurbishment of large materials handling equipment, designed to ensure economic implementation in accordance with the company goals. Rheinbraun2 has been using materials handling equipment since 1900, the largest units today being bucket-wheel excavators with a daily capacity of 240,000 bank cubic metres of overburden and a service weight of up to 13,500 t (metric tons). Since 1975, more than 50 large-scale refurbish- ment projects have been carried out in the company. In the process, refur- bishment has turned out to be the proven alternative to replacement of large materials handling equipment. Rheinbraun Engineering,3 a Rhein- braun subsidiary, carries out planning, consulting, and supervising work in the implementation of refurbishment projects in Germany and abroad. The most recent example is the refurbishment of Dredger 11 of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria in cooperation with Krupp-Australia, Melbourne.

"In some lode-style gold deposits the geological (lithological) uncertainty may have similar economic significance as the grade uncertainty. In the absence of precise knowledge of the deposit geology, geological models of these types of deposits that are used to constrain spatially the estimated (or simulated) grade values may influence significantly the contained metal. Methods for assessing geological uncertainty quantitatively are rarely considered due to their perceived inability to consider exhaustive geological interpretations, and resulting models that often appear geologically unrealistic. Furthermore, should the lodes have been subjected to folding, or where the mineralisation continuity does not follow a planar orientation along strike or down dip, standard methods of variography and interpolation using linear vectors in space often do not provide a good representation of continuity. An alternative approach is to relate spatial samples from adjacent drill holes using an unfolding plane.The paper demonstrates conditional simulation of the geometry and gold grades of a folded lode-style deposit where:simulation of lode geometry considers explicitly the geologistÆs interpretation, andsimulation of gold grade values that consider explicitly the folded nature of the lodes.The results are contrasted to the traditional approach of linear vectors in real space for a single lode interpretation.CITATION:Richmond, A, 2012. Poor quality water resulting from interaction of surface run-off with saline mine spoil and soils can cause significant problems for water reuse on mine sites. Not only can this saline water lead to machine corrosion and increased maintenance costs, but may cause detrimental effects on the environment. Determining the geochemistry of mine spoil, and the likelihood of salt dissolution during rainfall events, may aid in more effective mine site management of water. Spoil samples were taken from three areas of the German Creek mine site, situated in the Bowen Basin coalfield, Queensland. Samples from two undisturbed areas on the lease were also collected for comparison. Analyses were performed using a variety of laboratory techniques: leaching tests, effective cation exchange capacity determination, X-ray diffraction, clay quantification, and total organic content determination. Results show that dissolution of surface (top 2 cm) salt minerals from spoil areas is an important contributor to surface run-off salinity during rainfall events. Equally, ion exchange with clay minerals appears to be a significant source of elevated ion concentrations in run-off waters. Findings from the undisturbed areas show undetectable quantities of salt mineral species, resulting in waters with low ion concentrations. More generally, monovalent cations (sodium, and to a lesser extent potassium) appear to be derived from dissolution of salt precipitated whereas divalent cations (calcium, magnesium) are more likely to be sourced from exchange reactions with clay minerals. Incorporating knowledge about the mechanism of cation mobilisation from spoil with the spatial distribution of spoil properties and understanding of the dynamics of water quality variations on the site will aid in development of integrated water quantity and quality management strategies.

They hav' been formed during the Cainozoic Era by supergene enrichment ò6f Precambbrian: manganiferoius sediments, and by deposition from -solution on, or'in caves in, the Cain- ozoic land surface. The manganese in solution was derived from the weathering of Precambrian manganifer.ous s.edimexsts, None of the deposits are of hydrothermal origin, nor are they related to igneous rocks in any war, other than as ultimate source rocks. There is ho evidence-'t.o.:sugge,st that meta- morphism has been responsible for.the emplacement of any deposit. The tenor of the ore varies'aec'ording'to the quantity of gangue in the orebody and- also to the nature of the part- icular ore minerals. The main ore.mine.rals are the oxides pyrolusite and cryptomelane and the 'o'xide-silicate braunite. The main gangue minerals are hematite, limonite and quartz. The deposits of high grade oreò(-above.45 per cent Mn) range in size from 50 tons to many thousands of tons but most of them are in the 500-5,000-tons r .nge .

Widely diverse mechanisms exist for the action of a range of selective sulphide flotation depressants. Collector desorp- tion, leaching, competitive adsorption, formation of hydrophilic reaction-product coatings, action as reducing agents, and action as lattice-oxidizing agents are discussed. Detailed attention is focused on the latter two mechanisms. Recent works on copper depressants particularly for copper-molybdenum separations, and oxidizing agents enabling arsenopyrite- pyrite separations, are presented and discussed.

Construction of twin stacked railway tunnels through mixed ground conditions in the heavily populated urban environment of Hong Kong, including tunnelling in poor ground conditions, with low cover and under or adjacent to sensitive structures with minimal impact was the challenge presented by the tunnelling section of the Kowloon Southern Link project. This paper details how twin 1.1 km tunnels of 7.0 m internal diameter were driven by Mixshield tunnel boring machine (TBM) in mixed ground through one of the exclusive shopping and hotel districts in Kowloon. The paper addresses the challenges required to be considered and managed for the success of the project, including ground conditions, TBM selection, Mixshield TBM operation, settlement monitoring and control, ground- borne noise and vibration, proximity to utilities, buildings, roads and operating railways.

In the mid 1960's Outokumpu considered building a lead Flash Smelter on the basis of Flash Smelting technology developed first in the late 1940s for smelting copper concentrates. Pilot scale tests were carried out and the process was found technically sound. The project was however not economically viable under Finnish conditions and it was cancelled. In 1981 pilot plant tests were restarted after many enquiries from the primary lead producers. All the know-how and development made in copper and nickel smelters was applied to the Lead Flash Smelting process and the tests were successful. Outokumpu has so far tested several types of lead concentrate with lead contents ranging from 28 to 75 per cent. The concentrate is oxidized and smelted to metallic lead and slag directly in the Flash Smelting Furnace using high oxygen enrichment of tonnage oxygen. Fossile fuel is used in the Flash Smelting Furnace in cases when the feed material does not contain enough latent heat to smelt the furnace products even though pure oxygen is used for oxidation. Thus the process results in a low consumption of extraneous energy. Use of oxygen results in a small gas flow but it is rich in sulphur dioxide. The gas treatment facilities and sulphur recovery plant will be small in size and low in investment cost. The process is flexible and can produce stable quality of products from different types of raw materials. Quality of lead bullion especially the sulphur content can be regulated over wide a range, from 0.1 per cent upwards according to the needs of the refinery.

Gold mineralization belt of eastern China in the adjacent part of the northwestern Pacific rim is orientated NE to NNE and as-sociated with Mesozoic faults and igneous intrusives and Mesozoic to Cenozoic volcanism and subvolcanism extending more than 3000 km in length and 300 to 800 kni in width affected by the movement from the Pacific Plate subducted against the Asian Plate.The relative movement between the Pacific and the Asian plates give rise to two types of fracture zones, the tensional ones providing the space for the formation of fissure-filling type of auriferous quartz veins and the shear zones providing the space for the formation of hydrothermal replacement type of gold de-posits in Shandong Peninsula. The fissure filling type of quartz vein, is represented by Linglong gold deposit which is hosted in Mesozoic Linglong Granite and consists of hundreds of quartz veins filling fractures trending NE to NNE and the hydrothermal replacement type is represented by Sanshandao gold deposit which is hosted in crushed and hydrothermally altered Mesozoic Linglong Granite in contact with Archaean metamorphic complex of Jiaodong Group along a Mesozoic upthust fault zone trending NE.

The Nicolsons Find gold project is located 35 km southwest of Halls Creek in the east Kimberley. It was discovered in the late 1980s by John Nicolson and Stuart Skoglund, when high grade gold mineralisation within outcropping gossanous quartz reefs was found. The area has produced a modest 28 150 ounces of gold over two brief mining periods in 1996 and 2002 - 2003. Indicated and inferred resources as of September 2011 stand at 1 384 000 t at 5.58 g/t Au for 248 500 ounces of gold.The project is situated within the Halls Creek Orogen. Principal host units are metasediments and volcaniclastic sediments of the Koongie Park Formation. Minor mafic units are also recognised. Immediately east of these units, emplacement of the loadstone granite is believed to have provided the structural setting for the later gold mineralising event.Mineralisation is hosted within a broad, brittle-ductile arcuate shear zone about the western contact of the Loadstone granite. In the Nicolsons Find area, the shear zone strikes north-northeast and within the shear zone, gold is hosted in a series of narrow, quartz rich veins up to 200 m in strike length, plunging moderately to the north-northeast. To date, mineralisation has been drilled to a depth of 360 m below the surface. The veins are stepped or en-echelon in nature with low gold values towards the quartz vein limits where compression is inferred and higher grades present in the dilational body of the quartz veins. Gold is fine grained and can be present with or without associated sulfides. Sulfides are generally minor and consist mainly of arsenopyrite with traces of chalcopyrite, pyrite and sphalerite. Where present, sulfides are generally indicative of higher gold values.CITATION:Csar, M, 2012. The presence of impurities which are electropositive to zinc in acid zinc electrolyte causes changes to deposit morphology and reduced current efficiency. Glue may be added to control some impurity effects, but assaying for animal glue concentration is difficult and seldom done. Measurement of the activation overpotential for zinc deposition by cyclic voltammetry is used in some plants to monitor electrolyte quality and control glue additions.The deposit morphology and current efficiency of zinc deposition from commercial electrolyte were investigated for various glue additions in the presence of increased levels of antimony. Cyclic voltammetry was investigated as a method of optimising glue additions in the presence of antimony.Scanning electron rnicroscopy showed deposits characteristic of the impurity element present and the glue addition rate. Cyclic voltarnmetry measurements showed some correlation between current efficiency and activation polarisation potential. The importance of using tankhouse electrolytes where results are to be related to tankhouse operation was noted.

This paper comprises a discussion of standards for comparing conditions in mines, of methods for measuring the flow of air, of a comparison of fan performances, and the application of these matters to mines in Western Australia.UNDERGROUND CONDITIONSIn approaching the question of mine ventilation one naturally searches for some standard by which to measure the conditions in a mine.There are several clauses in the Mines Regulation Act defining the conditions which are permitted. The quantity of CO2 is limited to 0·25 by volume, but the estimation of CO2 involves a chemical determination and is not suited for general use in a mine.The maximum temperature is fixed at 87 0 F. (dry bulb), and at 80° (wet bulb). The reading of temperature is easily done in the working places, and this is a very valuable and practical test of the conditions in a mine.The wet bulb temperature is probably the most important factor in determining working conditions. It is obvious that human life cannot be sustained for any appreciable period if the wet bulb temperature is above blood heat (about 97°F.). In places where the wet bulb temperature is 90°F. there is danger of heat stroke.In places where the air in a mine is still, the wet bulb temperature rises to a value close to the rock temperature.Adequate ventilation cools the workings by transference of heat from the rock to the air stream, and the temperature...

Christmas Island "C"-grade phosphate consists essentially of the minerals crandallite and millisite. Although containing over 25% P205, this material is not suitable for the manufacture of water-soluble phosphate fertilizers by conventional processes, because of its high iron and aluminium content Cover 25% total R203). In order to produce a water-soluble fertilizer from such material it is necessary to separate the iron and aluminium from the phosphate, which must report in a product acceptable as a fertilizer. Several processes were studied in detail. The first used ion exchange for dissolution and separation and yielded diammonium phosphate; processing costs were high compared with conven- tional processes based on apatite. The latter processes have basically simple flowsheets and cost of processing is low when compared with the costs of the raw materials. The need to separate iron and aluminium from the phosphate introduces additional complexity into the treatment of the C-grade material. The higher processing costs might be justified, however, if alumina could be produced as a byproduct. Two proposed processes have been developed in which: 1. hydrochloric acid is used for dissolution, and solvent extrac- tion for the separation of ferric chloride from phosphoric acid. Aluminium chloride is precipitated and hydrolysed to recover alumina and hydrochloric acid. 2. sulphuric acid is used for dissolution and aluminium is crystallized as ammonium alum. The phosphate is produced as an ammonium phosphate-sulphate fertilizer. High purity alumina can be obtained by treatment of the recrystallized alum. The technology of these processes is described, and their broad economics discussed briefly.\

With some notable exceptions, marine placers located just below, or just above, present sea level, are responsible for much of today's production of detrital ilmenite, rutile, zircon, and other minerals of value. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the paleogeographic and paleo-oceanographic factors which may have determined the location of presently submerged marine placers. These factors-include changes in sea level, burial by recent marine sediments, stream capture and other i changes in drainage patterns, and recent changes in climate. Selected geologic situations in the Yellow Sea off the coast of Korea, in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Portugal, in the Bering Sea off the coast of Alaska, and in the Arabian Sea off the coast of India, will be used to illustrate the author's point of view.

The methods used by the Anglo American Corporation for analysis of long-term metal markets and prices are described. The principal factors affecting the relationships between production costs and metal prices are analysed. These are firstly the type of market, - speculative or consumer commodity, free market or subject to price control; and secondly the rate of growth of demand for the metal. It is shown that virtually all metals will have relatively low rates of demand growth for the foreseeable future, due to market saturation, increased economisation, substitution and product obsolescence. Metal prices have a clear dependance on production costs, however forecasting future costs is by no means simple; amongst other things, account must be taken of changing exchange rates, inflation rates, and the potential for operating more efficiently. The paper concludes by giving brief assessments of the long-term future for aluminium, copper, zinc, nickel and tin.

At our Monkland Mine at Gympie, we operate a deep, narrow vein gold mine using hand held equipment, rail mounted haulage and narrow shafts. This is in many respects the old-fashioned way and is well suited most of the orebody geometry exposed to-date. We have also commenced some long hole stoping and we use alimaks for some jobs. The heart of our particular mining style is the employment and retention of experienced miners with remuneration based on productivity. We do our planning/monitoring/supervision down to the level of daily individual productivity. In focussing on cycles per se, we have chosen not to talk about drill and blast cycles or cycles for mine development, stope preparation or drawdown and haulage. Instead we have stepped right back from the operation as presently run and have adopted a very broad view of the mining cycle. We will in this presentation intertwine the ebb and flow of, exploration, project sponsorship, development, production and cash returns to owners. The time line considered spans both history and predicted future.

Over the past 20 years within Australia, there have been a number of incidents at mine sites where ammonium nitrate-based explosives have reacted with certain rock types containing sulfide minerals. These rocks have commonly been referred to as æreactive groundÆ. These reactions have frequently led to fires (particularly in ground susceptible to spontaneous combustion) or premature detonation of the ammonium nitrate-based explosives. Clearly, this introduces an element of risk when using ammonium nitrate-based explosives in these areas. Dyno Nobel has been proactive in developing ammonium nitrate-based explosive products that can be used in these types of æreactive groundÆ environments that minimise the risk of premature detonations occurring. A system for assessing æreactivityÆ of sulfide containing rocks has been developed that can be used in the field. Previous literature has been reviewed, identifying Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) as the most common method for determining the æreactivityÆ of the ground. In the present investigation, DTA has been rejected as a suitable technique for determining ground reactivity, since it measures thermal reactions at higher temperatures over short time periods, conditions that are unlike those in the field. For example, ground at ambient temperature has been found to react with ammonium nitrate-based explosives over long time periods, reactions that are unable to be evaluated using DTA. Other more suitable techniques have been developed to monitor rock conditions that can be measured in the field and give a good indication of potential ground æreactivityÆ with ammonium nitrate-based explosives. Dyno Nobel is currently investigating the reaction mechanisms of spontaneous combustion in reactive ground, the decomposition mechanisms of ammonium nitrate and the role of inhibitors in ammonium nitrate-based explosives. Once complete, this fundamental research will lead to the further development of even lower risk ammonium nitrate-based explosive products for use in æreactive groundsÆ in a variety of mine environments.

The Quesnell-Stikine arcs, in the Canadian Cordillera, are host to Triassic and Early Jurassic alkalic porphyry Cu-Au and calc-alkalic porphyry Cu-(Mo-Au) deposits formed outboard of ancestralNorth America in island-arc tectonic settings (McMillan, 1991). The majority of the alkalic porphyry Cu-Au deposits are products of a discrete magmatic event at the end of the Triassic, with a second and smaller event in the Early Jurassic (Mortensen, Ghosh and Ferri, 1995). Of the Triassic complexes, the Galore Creek alkalic intrusive suite is one of the largest and most silica-undersaturated intrusive complexes, and host to the most significant undeveloped alkalic porphyry Cu-Au resource in North America (Lang, Stanley and Thompson, 1995). Because of the common presence of feldspathoidal-bearing rocks in the complex (Enns et al, 1995), Galore Creek likely represents an end member example of the alkalic porphyry Cu-Au class. The Galore Creek alkalic Cu-Au-Ag porphyry district, located in NW British Columbia (Canada), contains 12 mineralised prospects (Enns et al, 1995; Micko et al, 2007; Schwab et al, in press) with a total measured and indicated resources of 785.7 Mt at 0.52 per cent Cu, 0.29 g/t Au and 4.87 g/t Ag (NovaGold Resources Inc, February, 2008). The Central Zone is the largest and best delineated. Other economically important mineralised centres include the South-West, Bountiful, West Fork and Junction deposits. The South-West Zone, the focus of this contribution, is a Cu-Au-Ag breccia-centred deposit with a measured and indicated resource of 69 Mt grading 0.42 per cent Cu, 0.69 g/t Au, 2.67 g/t Ag. Hosted in brecciated intrusive rocks, the South-West Zone is distinctly younger than the Central Zone and most of the other mineralised centres (Enns et al, 1995; Schwab et al, in press). The South-West Zone therefore preserves the late stages of hydrothermal evolution at Galore Creek. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. At the East Sullivan site, wood wastes covering the abandoned mine tailings impoundment prevent sulfide oxidation by creating an anoxic environment. The addition of coarse ligneous wastes and their high permeability favour infiltration, resulting in a water table rise that maintains most tailings under water saturation and thus provides an additional protection against sulfide oxidation. Moreover, high infiltration allows a more rapid flushing of acid prone groundwater generated prior to the cover placement, which could cause acid mine drainage over a long period of time. Finally, the pore-waters under the cover are characterised by a strong reducing potential, high alkalinity, and near neutral pHs. These conditions favour sulfate reduction and base metal precipitation as sulfides and as carbonates. Pore-water composition monitored from 1992 to 1998 showed a significant Fe2+ decrease, following cover placement. Thereafter, the restoration strategy capitalised on the alkaline and reductive properties of the waters underlying the wood-waste cover. An original treatment of acid effluents, based on the recirculation of water discharging around the impoundment through the organic cover, was implemented. In 2002, the recirculated water from May to October had a mean pumping rate of 240 m3/h, for a total volume of 800 000 m3. Data gathered near the dispersal zone from 2000 to 2002 show that despite the recirculation of acid water (pH ÿ3), the pH decreases by only one unit from 7 to 6, during the recirculation period, ie from May to November. However, alkalinity decreases from 800 to 100 mg/L-CaCO3. Despite this decrease, the alkalinity is back up to 800 mg/L-CaCO3 the following May, thanks to sulfate reduction. From 2000 to 2002, Fe2+ concentration in the pore waters near the dispersal zone is maintained below 2 mg/L. Evolution of surface water quality suggests that the contaminated groundwater flush is completed in the north and north-west area of the impoundment; the east sector is under recovery, while the south sector remains the most problematic. A wood-waste cover, besides limiting sulfide oxidation, can fill the role of alkaline reducing barrier for the treatment of these acidogenic waters, until a balance between acidity and alkalinity in the effluent is reached.

Current control practice is reviewed for agglomeration processes, including pelletising, sintering and induration; and for smelting processes, including blast and reverberatory furnaces, flash smelting, the intensive bath smelting processes together with converting. The importance of sensors for on-line control and the status of mathematical modelling is discussed.Future progress in automatic control will require improved component specific sensors and the use of validated mathematical models running in parallel with the process. The possibilities in both these areas are reviewed in light of the trends towards more intensive smelting processes.
